La Fuerza del Destino #15 Tue 08/23/11 Ivan Turns to the Dark Side
Our dear Gloria has had a migraine the last few days and understandably is unable to write a recap. I am putting up this discussion page with highlights from the episode. Please feel free to add details (or a mini-recap) that I would be happy to post here.
-Camilo tells Antolin that Ivan is back in town and is one of the Marvelously Rich McGuires. Antolin warns Camilo to keep his mouth shut about who actually killed the thug for hire.
- Antolin pays a happy/romantic visit to Carolina (he seems genuine with her) and tells her of his friend Ivan’s return. She looks nervous. Gerry looks just as nervous when she tells him the news later. She wonders what they should do.
-At Esther’s urging, JJ agrees to pay David a salary (sueldo).
-Camilo gives Ivan a full run down of all the ranchers and their needs. They decide to use the factory that Camilo’s dad used to oversee as their packing plant. Ivan’s still on the fence about helping the Curiels. Tony is not happy with this if it’s coming from a place of vengeance, but let’s Ivan make the final decision.
-JJ has a drink with Tony to get assurance that he won’t get locked out of the deal.
-Tony, Ivan and Camilo check out the fabulous house they’ve rented a few houses away from Casa Curiel.
-Ivan meets with Lucia. He gives her some smoldering looks. She is awkward with him and he thinks it’s because he broke her adolescent heart. She denies it and says it’s because her sister told her how he took advantage of her. She saw how much Maripaz hated the baby growing inside of her because of what Ivan did to her. After a few good shakes, Lucia admits the baby did not die but was kidnapped. They told Gerry that they put the baby in an orphanage as they had planned and they never made a report to the police. (Note that Ivan has just learned that Maripaz lied about a) her great love for him; b) loving the baby that was growing inside her; and c) the baby dying and her great grief over it. In addition to lying to everyone else that he took advantage of her.)
-Lucia is mortified that she spilled the beans and will now cause her family to lose the McGuire investment opportunity, which means losing the ranch. She runs to Gerry and Carolina for comfort, telling Gerry the truth about the baby for the first time. Gerry and Carolina once again look very nervous about Ivan.
-Tony pays a pleasant visit to Carlota. She remembers the name of his mother’s family. He insists she call him Tony. Looks like there may be a love connection in the future.
-Ivan is pissed at ALL the Curiel women. Maripaz and Lucrezia for being evil liars; Carlota for being an accomplice; and Lucia because, even at the age of 15, she knew right from wrong. He wants revenge.
-Ivan confronts Carlota and basically curses her out in her own home. She gives him the name of the real estate company in Guaymas that rented them the house and got them the housekeeper. She also tells him the first name of the housekeeper.
-Ivan meets Maripaz for a date, watches her get drunk, leads her on, and requests that she divorce David if she wants a relationship with him. She is happy to oblige if it means getting into his pants and his wallet.
-Tony is worried about Ivan’s heart being poisoned with hate and vengeance. He wants Camilo to help turn Ivan back to the light and away from dark side.
-Maripaz demands a divorce from David. After arguing a bit, and getting shoved around by Maripaz, he gives in. They announce their divorce to the Meandragon family the next morning. Maripaz also announces to the whole family that David couldn't get it up their wedding night. JJ is not pleased, to say the least.

Carlota also informed Lucrazy that it was Lucia who told Ivan the truth concerning the baby. This sends Lucrazy even more rabid as she now blames her daughter if they don't get the necessary funding for their ranch.
It's about obvious that Gerry and Carolina know that Alex is Ivan and Merry Piece's son. He doesn't have the right to withhold this knowledge from Ivan.
But i can see now where this going with Ivan bent on revenge and pitting both sisters against each other. Gerry will now feel he doesn't have to tell Ivan the truth for doing this. Even though he was irresponsible in having unprotected sex with Ivan's mother.It was him who got Ivan's mother pregnant this part will get good once Ivan learns about that.
I had to laugh about how Ivan played and toyed with Merry Piece she deserves it. But Lucia doesn't.
I don't have a problem with how he reacted to Carlotta either it was long over due because she is a accomplice to everything her crazy and nasty shrewish daughter has pulled. She needed to turn herself and her daughter in for the fraud she committed a long time ago. If she had done that they wouldn't be in the situation that they are in now.

Thanks, Vivi , for filling in. I hope that Gloria feels better soon. Thanks also to Blu for adding some details. Uh-oh, surely there will be a great big anvil waiting for selfish, spoiled, soulless , insensitive Merry Piece at the end of this novela. I, too, was surprised at how sweet Antolin acted towards Carolina. Kiki Edgar often plays a sweet girl suffering from some affliction. In Amor Real, she had tuberculosis, I think, and died young. However, recently on Mujeres Assessinos [?] someone posted that she played a very different sort of character.

Gerry can prevent about half of the potential carnage by telling Ivan that Alex is his son -- now. That certainly doesn't let Maripaz off the hook; Ivan already knows that she wanted an abortion.
We all know that Lucrazia and JJ deserve most of his wrath. The very idea of threatening Carlota psychiatric committal is the ultimate arrogance Lucrazia has displayed so far. Like Lucia couldn't find someone to refute the allegations.
JJ's statement about "there will be no divorce in this family" is a clue that Saul's birth mother is dead. I'm going to assume that he was a small child at most when that happened and that Esther came into their lives almost right away. At some point I expect JJ to say "I only married you to have a mother for Saul... and you failed even at that."

Almost every person Ivan knows and trusts has/is keeping a secret from him:

I have been curious about the Antolin/Carolina friendship since she mentioned it a few episodes ago. They seem to have a genuine connection. He's really sweet with her and they seem to be sweet on each other. She knows he makes his way in the world doing shady (chueco) business, and tries to counsel him to go legit. He's honest with her about his world view-- basically that nice guys, like his brother Camilo, finish last. It's obvious that Gerry now knows Antolin's reputation (didn't when they first met and he gave him the money for Ivan) and doesn't like the friendship between Carolina and him.
What are Antolin's intentions towards her? Marriage? He doesn't seem the marrying kind, and she doesn't seem to be expecting that. Such an odd, but sweet, relationship.

Thanks, ViviDC! Appreciated your hilights. Personally, I am glad to see Van turn deceptively vicious with Lucrazy and Co. so soon into the novela. Refreshing as all get out! He's got a right to go for the jugular as he's been keeping this hatred and need for vengeance simmering in the back of his brain for a decade. I see it as to be expected. These people deserve his wrath--all of them in some form or other and Tony, whatever he might think or say, has no idea what unrighteous hell this young man went through before he met him. It will not only be a lesson for those who deserve one, but it will be a spiritual and emotional sterilization of sorts for Van. Once the pressure cooker explodes and releases the excess steam, it will be easier to approach the pot and turn it back to a simmer and later to turn it off completely IMO.

Chuchi- Carloina is the younger sister of Gerry's dead 2nd wife Beatriz (whome we never met). His sister-in-law.
Maybe Carolina sees the good in Antolin.
Everyone else recognizes Ivan, why can't JJ? I can understand why Esther, David & Saul wouldn't recognize him; they didn't know him to begin with. But Judith knows that "Ivan McGuire" used to be "Ivan Villagomez," and it would be a wonder she hasn't told her daddy except he'd probably tell her to shut up before she could get two words out.

It seems that as Ivan became young adult Ivan, he stayed clear of JJ. The last time JJ probably saw Ivan is when he was an angry young teen. And Carlota threatened to expose JJ as being Ivan's baby-daddy if he came sniffing around Alicia anymore, so he likely kept his distance.
As for Carolina and Antolin, I can see that Carolina could see the good in anyone. And Antolin is charming. My question is why does Antolin hang around her when I'm sure he could have many lovely young things on his arm.

Why is Anto so attracted to Carolina? Perhaps, IMHO, because compared to all the other young women he comes across she is the purest, kindest and least prejudiced of all, in addition to being blind and stronger due to her handicap. She accepts his faults and doesn't harshly criticize or judge, either, apparently. JMO.
The two skankiest guys (Saul and Antolin) in this tn are attracted to the two purest women (Lucia and Carolina). While two pure of heart guys (Ivan and David) have a thing for skanky Maripaz, although Ivan seems to be losing his attraction to her.

Variopinta- It appears that only Gerry and Carolina know the secret about Alex (which we assume is that he's Ivan's child). The last thing Lucia knows about the baby is that he disappeared. When speaking to her dad and Carolina she was revealing to them for the first time that the baby disappeared. The story the Curiel women told Gerry is that they gave him to the foundling home. It was of note in that scene that Gerry was more concerned about Lucia being upset, and how Ivan took the news of the baby's disappearance, and did not seem surprised to be hearing for the "first time" that the baby had been kidnapped. Had Lucia not been so upset, she might have noticed the lack of surprise on her dad'd part.
I agree that Antolin is more of a charming bad boy, while Saul is a complete jerk. But they both seem to sleep around. Remember, it was Saul who took 14 year olds Ivan and Camilo to his prostitute friend.

Anon207: I had a hard time with that convo but it sounded like she told Ivan she didn't know about the thugs until after the fact, which is true. Ivan left without seeing anyone in their family to verify who did what or even tell about his mother so he just assumed Carlota was in on it too.
Variopinta- Yes. The earthquake was strong here in DC. It was surprising because of the location. But since I grew up in SoCal, I wasn't freaking out like my co-workers. It was quite scary for them, and opened my eyes to how people who have not grown up in earthquake country react to that kind of thing. You know the saying about the devil you know...

Variopinta- Yes, that too. I've been in DC 11 years, so I was here during 9/11. I knew immediately though that we were having an earthquake yesterday. But for those not familiar with earthquakes, thoughts of 9/11 crossed many of their minds.
I think the Antolin-Carolina relationship is interesting. That makes him a 3 dimensional character with depth of feeelings and a psychological imapct to the story.
Ivan's anger is justified, though I kind of did not want to see Carlota bear the full brunt of his pent up anger. As a man, I would definitely feel the same way if that had happened to me. I would be wondering what became of my child and where he is. It sure is a shock tha after all these years that the kid is supposedly dead and then now missing but not dead. Could anyone blame him. Tony is right to try to calm Ivan down. He kept saying that's enough and apologized to Carlota because that's what he was supposed to do. It is important to keep a level head and not go crazy. It would do no one good if both Tony and Ivan went nuts. Ivan actually had gone to through the experience of getting Maripaz pregnant, being beat up, losing his m other, forced to flee to the US so his feelings are justified.
I feel bad for Lucia but again, Ivasn just had to lash out and desperately get the needed intel.
Regarding the earthquake, I was giving someone a tour of our facility I was working in and up the stairs we heard what sounded like a freight train passing by and all the tv screens later showed the news about the earthquake. Cell phone service was interrupted because everyone was using their cell phones. I personally have experienced at least 5-6 mild earthquakes in my lifetime and I was not at all worried since the ground was not shaking and we had no damage around us. Most of the earthquakes I felt were in California when I was on vacation. Most people here never ever experienced an earthquake in theri life. The beltway traffic was worse than it normally is and took me over 3 hours to get home because the let government workers out early.

Regarding the earthquake, I was giving someone a tour of our facility I was working in and up the stairs we heard what sounded like a freight train passing by and all the tv screens later showed the news about the earthquake. Cell phone service was interrupted because everyone was using their cell phones. I personally have experienced at least 5-6 mild earthquakes in my lifetime and I was not at all worried since the ground was not shaking and we had no damage around us. Most of the earthquakes I felt were in California when I was on vacation. Most people here never ever experienced an earthquake in theri life. The beltway traffic was worse than it normally is and took me over 3 hours to get home because the let government workers out early.

Thanks for the man's point of view on Ivan's reactions. I totally understand his anger, but am glad Tony is in his life to help him keep some perspective. I also like that Antolin appears to be a 3 dimensional complex character.

RE: Why some folks don't recognize Ivan.....maybe those glasses he wore as a teen were hand-me-downs from Clark Kent?

LOL Barbara. I loved those glasses. Wish he still wore them, but I guess he could afford Lasiks after he met Tony. :)
It's really ONLY JJ that didn't recognize him, and we all know he only has eyes for himself. None of the other Mondragon's but Judith knew Ivan, and she recognized him.
