La Pola - August 22, 2011 - Discussion Page
Pola rallies the women to follow the soldiers and make themselves useful by providing food, mending clothing and cheering them on. Nariño tries to stop her by having the rope to a “taribo” over a river cut so that the women cannot cross. Resourcesful Pola jumps in the raging river and rigs up another taribo and the women cross into the battle zone.
Alejo makes his escape from Popayan and joins Nariño’s forces bringing with him a local leader and his small band of troops. He catches up with Pola, but she plays hard to get.
Nariño expects that they will meet Sámano’s forces just outside Popayan. The troops make ready for battle.

La Pola mon Aug 22
in SF, Camilo torres arrives from Tunja with only 150 farmer men (not trained soldiers as expected). Pola watches from a balcony and comments that the men would only be useful as pool plugs (tapon de alberca). CT tells Narino that is the only men he was able to gather to come help the troops, without weapons or other resources. Claims he sent most of his resources to help Simon Bolivar and his troops. CT says he brought 5 officers, including Rodriguez. Narino asks about Baraya, he stayed in the Tunja guard… Narino guesses right that CT demoted Baraya’s role, and says Baraya is a great military officer, made a mistake of over confidence, but he is a good officer.
At the Valencia’s, the soldier tries to get Samano’s attention.. probably that he has found something since there is blood on his bayonette blade. But Samano gets very angry that the soldier keeps interrupting him so won’t let him speak… Samano is more interested in finding the ‘traitors’ who live in that house. He has heard that the people in that house are traitors. By then Leandro has made it back to the house. Samano is about to question Francisco about whether he supports ‘the rebels’, Leandro tells Samano they are his parents. Samano is confused saying he heard that the owners of the house supported the rebels cause. Francisco bails himself out by telling Samano that the owners of the house are the Valencias. When Samano turns his attention to Don Gaspar, Gaspar says the council of Popayan is willing to recognize the authority of the king. Samano is not happy with that. So Leandro speaks well for the Valencias, saying they are loyal to the king. Samano spits on Gaspar’s face, yelling that it is better to die for spain than support the enemy. Will have to pay for it with his life. Francisco then says maybe instead Gaspar can donate a considerable amount to the cause of Samano’s troops. Samano says he will only spare the life of Gaspar if the amount he is willing to donate is ‘fabulous’. Francisco assures they are able to. Francisco brags some more but Samano reminds him that just like he is the father of one of his trusted men, he also has another son who is a traitor he can’t wait to execute himself. Francisco says he would be in his right. MI is ashamed so Francisco whispers to her to shut up. Leandro then sees his mother very anxious, he whispers asking about Alejo, she signals that he is upstairs. When the soldier finally gets some attention from Samano and Samano himself notices the blood on the bayonette blade and asks the soldier about it, Leandro jumps in and says the soldier hurt another soldier by accident on their way into town… (good thinking on your toes, Leandro).
Gaspar tells Eusebia he wants Francisco out of the house, never trusted him. She says he is trustworthy, he is european!… Gaspar says ‘look at everything that has happened to us, just because you believe everything is better if it comes from there, you are willing to pay any price for having our daughter marry a ‘european’. She appologizes saying he was right all along, and asks what will they do now, he says all they can do is pray that Narino destroys Samano.
Back in SF, Ines reminds Narino that he has daughters behind, not to leave them orphan. He says the troops need him… Ines questions if he wants to die like Magdalena did, letting yourself die to stop the pain. Narino says the ones to blame for destroying our lives are THEY (the spanish). Isabel gives her dad her doll for good luck. He swears he will bring her back. Ines promises to care for the girls. (Commercial breaks announce these are the ‘final episodes’)
On her own initiative, Pola has got the women of SF grouped up and convinced that they can go with the men, and although they cannot fight with them, they can cook for them, fix their clothes, and care for the wounded.
A while later Francisco, Leandro, Alejo and Maria Teresa are talking and the brothers are trying to convince each other to jump lines… Alejo says can’t do it, I am with the good guys searching for their liberty, argues with Leandro that he should be on the side of America, which should be free if it wants to as a people. Leandro argues that america belongs to spain. Alejo asks why. Francisco jumps in and says ‘for the right obtained by the nobility of our blood’ (would somebody please please cut this man’s tongue out!!) Alejo reminds Leandro that he is america, and asks if he has not realized what kind of person Samano is. But Leandro won’t give in. Francisco blames Pola for Alejo’s stand. Since there is no concensus, Alejo says God forbid we find facing each other in battle. Leandro says God forbid. Francisco immediately says that the one that will die if they do end up facing each other is Alejo… Alejo and Leandro share teary-eye glares… Alejo leaves…
Narino and all the troops finally leave Santa Fe. Pola and the women try to go too but Narino won’t allow them. They tell Pola they tried. Pola won’t give up so easily, encourages them to follow the men.
Leandro tells Maria Teresa he thinks Alejo was able to leave safely, says he is leaving too, MT pulls him aside and asks Leandro to think about crossing lines and joining Alejo. He says can’t do that. Francisco again offends MT ordering her not to tell Leandro any more silly things. MT begs Leandro to convince Francisco to leave the Valencia house, she can’t stand any more shame. She cries on Leandro’s shoulder. Francisco tells MT to leave him alone with Leandro. She blesses Leandro and leaves. Francisco asks Leandro why he never wrote to him, was he that mad at him for the last talk they had? Leandro says not mad, dissappointed (decepcionado)… And he lets Francisco know that it is about the way Francisco despises the ‘bad race’ of Alejo (wishing his death) and MT(undermining her opinions, as usual), who happen to be his brother and mother. Francisco does not want Leandro to abandon him, but Leandro says he is free to live his own life and that is thanks to Alejo, not him. And to stay that way, he has to stay far from him.
In Popayan, Samano has Francisco read a ‘bando’ which says that Samano came to ‘rescue’ the town of Popayan from the Napoleon traitors forces, that the king is about to return to his throne, and that the Quito governor has named Samano, their liberator, governor of Popayan.
Pola manages to cross the river with difficulty with a rope around her waist to redo the ‘tarabita’.
On the streets of Popayan, Leandro tells Samano he was not able to convince Alejo to join them. He finds out from Samano that his aim is to go back to Santa Fe, Leandro asks ‘to be governor of Cundinamarca?’, Samano says aiming for a ‘higher role’… Leandro says Narino is on his way here… Samano says Narino is one of the trophys he wants. We will see what Narino’s pen is able to do against my sword.
Narino is talking to Leyva, notices the food is nasty.. Leyva says they miss the women… Leyva talks about Samano saying he is a good officer, but that Samano thinks he is better than he really is. Narino says that could be his weakness… At that moment, the women catch up with the men. The troops are happy, esp Vivianito and Pedrito. Even Don Antonio was missing their food and care. She says it took them a while to remake the ‘tarabita’… Narino says can’t say no to you. She says you can, but who knows if I will listen. If we try to follow you, will you try to prevent it again? Will you shoot us? He says no, won’t oppose anymore, you are welcome to join us.
Catalina dreams that Ciro kills Joaquin in a ‘abraham sacrifice’ fashion… Bernarda and Gertrudis care for her. Gertrudis fears how Cata’s reaction will be if she gets told Juliano died in the battle.
Alejo comes back to the Valencia house to say goodbye to his mother, (specifically says not his dad). He tells her he has not heard from Pola, wrote to her but no answer (MT gives him some encouragement). Maria Teresa not to be so harsh with his dad, gets upset on his shoulder. He says she is worrying him, and holds her gently. She can’t stand more humilliation, they are not welcome there, but Fran won’t leave. Alejo recommends that she leave Francisco and the miserable life she leads at his side, but she repeats that he is the man God chose for her, and her place is with Francisco. He appologizes for mentioning it again (she had asked him not to). He asks for her blessing, gives her a hug/kiss and leaves.
Alejo eventually rejoins Narino and the troops and brings them the report of the enemy troop locations and strength, also brings in the ‘governor’ of Popayan, Jose Maria Cabal(?), who is humbly willing to join Narino’s troops as a common soldier, but Narino is very respectful and names him captain. Have to say they are very respectful and admiring of each other.
After the meeting with Cabal, Alejo returns to ask Narino if Pola sent him any note with him. Narino says nope, but I think I know why… Alejo gets confuses so Narino adds that Pola and a good group of the SF women have joined their troops. Alejo smiles and leaves…
Arcos is talking to Maria Ignacia’s cousin, Jose Ilario Lopez, who asks him about Narino… Arcos tells him Narino is a great leader that you would be honored to die for. (apparently Arcos and Jose Ilario are assigned to guard Narino, they follow him around and guard the tent he is in).
Pola and Petra are fixing shirts for the men… Alejo comes by. Pola does not look up and she confuses him with a common soldier, until he clears his throat and she looks up.
A: For god’s sake what are you doing here, Pola?
P: Don’t you see? I am fixing the shirts! (LOL!!)
She walks away (AGAIN!!, for God’s sake, woman! Pay attention to your guy!!) and he has to follow her… she keeps avoiding him, she keeps on thinking he is dissapointed in her, and the same theme comes up again… his argument: we are catholic and need God’s blessing, its God’s rules and we can’t break them… her argument: But it was GOD who gave us our feelings for each other… this unbearable wanting being together… how can it be God who prevents it?
I have a bad feeling about Leandro... hopefully he will not go for nothing or for saving Samano...
also, poor Alejo... having to deal with all the stress of the war and also with two high-maintenance women... volatile Pola and martyr Maria Teresa. and also with a nasty father who will probably get both him and his brother killed for his obsession with the 'european pure spanish blood'. The idiot thinks he is siding with the winners... too bad he has no idea what is ahead
and a couple of places i initial MI should be MT, maria teresa.
mai tai, some very funny observations early this morning. Thanks for the smiles.
I was glad to see that Francisco hasn't changed a bit. Finally Eusebia sees him for what he is.
I don't think that Sámano believed for a minute that that blood was from an accidental nick of one of his soldiers. He as much as admitted that when he asked Leandro if he'd been able to contact his brother.
I loved Leyva's evaluation of Sámano as a smart soldier but not as smart as he thinks he is.
Poor Ciro did not look happy as a soldier. Domingo looked rather dashing in his uniform astride a horse... not so much, drunkenly lurching about.
I hope that Petra gets those earrings.
Carlos
Carlos: Francisco does not fail to disappoint.
This story is getting awfully biblical lately with Nariño seeming more prophetic than presidential. Consider the parable of Don Jorge Tadeo. Or Petra. Lots of reaping what you sow.
Thank you Pasofina and Marta. Wonderful job, both of you.
Narino seems more prophetic than presidential, while Francisco seems more 'scheemer' than a father, and Samano... well, can't come up with anything but more evil than Satan
But I loved how Domingo kept doubting that Pola was so close adn trusted by Narino and he watches them interact and has a stupefied face.
I will certainly cry and cry when this novela is over. Why are all the lousy novelas so long? Waaaaaahhhhh!!!!
Martaivet, great summary! and good eye on the Lopez soldier! i was curious if he’s earmarked to marry Maria Ignominius. nice to see he shook out on the Narino side of things.
why do the political parts have to be so boring? or am I missing something? CT has the option to be just as villainous (acting-wise) as francisco and samano. he needs a mustache to twirl or something. a monicle instead of his john lennon glasses. he’s never let narino do anything without complications, and yet all his lines are just even toned. is he some sacred character to colombia? is he going to come around in the end?
and why wouldn’t narino encourage camp followers? That’s a part of most wars, AFAIK. I guess it’s because Pola hasn’t punched, bit, or shot anyone lately, so the writers put her on a zipline. that must be on the editing room floor. (and petra shouting "belay on!"

ROFLOL!!! totally agree on the Lennon resemblance...
and i too noticed his mono-tone voice...
he looks so different from his character in Costena y Cachaco
Alejo/Pola encounter…
his argument: we are catholic and need God’s blessing, its God’s rules and we can’t break them… her argument: But it was GOD who gave us our feelings for each other… this unbearable wanting being together… how can it be God who prevents it?
Alejo tells Pola she’s got a point… but God’s laws are not to interpret, are to follow. She agrees that we have to follow God’s commandments. He repeats that he just doesn’t want to take her ‘virtue’ without God’s blessing. He says she keeps thinking it’s the last time they meet, but here they are again. He brings up the fact that she would not take ‘no’ from Narino as far as following the troop. She asks if he will yell at her. He would not mind except he does not feel good with her surrounded by so many men… she claims she can defend herself, )., he says it’s the men I don’t trust. Even Arcos has the hots for her.. and she is an engaged woman. (she can’t help but smile at thisPola eventually says right now there are other things we need to be thinking about… he says just don’t give them motive to think badly of you. She says she made that mistake already, and he knows how bad it went for her. (now he smiles) (so they put the wedding/intimacy plans on hold again, but this time they don’t part in bad terms)
Domingo is drunk again… Juliano tries to care, but Domingo is nasty to him too. They both took what the other loved most. Domingo asks Juliano if he believes the blacks will stop being beasts and turn into human beings… Domingo is resentful of all he did to get Cata, but Juliano got her.
A fight ensues between Arellano and Iglesias with the whole troop cheering… Col Rodriguez seems to enjoy it and does nothing to stop it (he wants to reduce the union and camaraderie among Narino’s troops, obviously he is for Camilo Torres plans). Narino has to come out with Leyva to stop the brawl. He is mad and says they HAVE to be united in order to win this war. Brothers need to look after each other and trust each other, but he won’t punish them, makes them shake hands instead. Narino tells Rodriguez he is dissappointed, fighting is not entertaining, it creates hatred between the men in the troops…
Samano receives Col Asilum (?LOL).. this guy is used to be in the battlefield with his men.. Samano says that is ‘inspiring’ but we will see he is not willing to do the same.
Narino tries to exchange letters with Samano but Samano will only ‘talk’ if Narino is willing to do it under Spanish rule, Narino consults with his officers and they all agree that there is no ‘spanish rule’ anymore… so Samano has no right to submit them to the laws of a king that they themselves turned their backs on. The only way Narino will not go to war is if they all unite as one and prepare to face Spain…
Cata is getting better. They tell her she has been ill for a couple weeks. No news of Juliano. Or Domingo.
Alejo talks it over with Pola. She asks him if they can win the war. He says this army is too divided among themselves, the only way they could win is if they all fought together as one warrior. She says only Narino has a chance to make that happen. She is talking as if she was going to fight with them, he forbids her from fighting.
Leyva is rehearsing with the troop new signal plays for the different orders (these are the french call versions so the enemy will be confused)
Narino says Alejo’s report says Samano’s troops are bigger and stronger. Leyva suggests they make Samano split his troops… by sending some troops one way… that way they will weaken Popayan’s defenses.. Rodriguez volunteers to lead the task. They mention the new Col that just joined Samano’s group.
Col Hasin gets sent by Samano to take troops one way. Hasin warns it is risky… Samano ends up yelling at him that he is in command and he should not have to repeat all his orders twice…
Leandro’s troop and MI’s cousin and Pedro and Viviano’s group both notice each other at same time.
Both report to the superiors that the enemy is close. When Leandro tells Samano he gets very nervous since he sent most of his troops with the Col Hasin.. he sends a group to get Col Hasin to come back asap. Samano is reluctant to confront Narino, but Leandro reminds him they can’t let the rebels take Popayan.
Cata and Bernarda hope that Juliano won’t let Domingo get him killed, Cata says Juliano has a reason to live… Cata.
The moment of the confrontation is here…
Narino sees the enemy troops and immediately thinks something’s wrong… it turns out it is a trap, Samano, Leandro and most of their troops are hidden behind trees on the other side of the bridge, showing only about 200 men guarding the bridge… sends Caval to charge the group by the bridge. Leandro and Samano are hoping Narino’s troops will fall in the trap. The fighting ensues, men start falling on both sides. The ones most exposed are the 200 troops of Samano’s on the bridge. The slaves and farmers are fighting very inspired… the women hear all the shooting and Pola heads over to the battlezone, tries to get other women to go with her, but she is the only one that gets over. Narino’s men begin to open their way throught the bridge.
Pola prays that Alejo and Vivianito don’t get killed.
Samano’s troops get on retreat. They abandon the bridge. Ciro gets really scared. Tells Domingo don’t want to die. Juliano says noone wants to, esp when we are talking about a child’s life. Narino figures it out what Samano is planning, and immediately tells Leyva to order retreat, has to repeat it because Leyva is confused. The troops hear the trumpet call and they interpret it right. Samano is totally flustered that they are retreating, and he can’t figure out the signal.
Narino tells Alejo to shoot the cannons toward the trees by the side of the bridge… Alejo is also confused so Narino has to repeat that order too… but Alejo quickly follows through. Arcos is also clueless, but follows the order. Alejo hopes that Leandro is not there… (but he is there of course)
Leyva asks Narino what was that about. Narino says ‘listen’… the cannons blow some gunpowder and force Samano’s men to come out of hiding.
Samano orders his men to blow the bridge. But MI’s cousin tells his men not to allow it. Quickly Samano sees that they are losing the bridge position and that they are under cannon fire, so he orders retreat and is the first to jump on a horse and take off… Leandro also gets to escape…
Pola makes it to where Leyva is, he tells her to go back but she is worried about Alejo. Leyva tells her the fight is almost over and Alejo is fine, points to him for her.
Tonito and Cap Cabal follow Samano … the trooops celebrate the won battle… they watch as Tonito and Cap Cabal follow Samano on horseback… Narino is ready to celebrate. Leyva wants to give him the credit but Narino says the victory is OURS. Viva la Patria!! (all celebrate the cheer), Pola and Alejo smile happily… Pola reaches Alejo… he is alright. But he is worried about Leandro and he does not know if he is alive. And he recalls the man that died in front of the cannon.
A: What are you doing here?
P: When we heard the bullets we came to help…
A: Help with what?
P: Whateve we could do. Are you going to reprimend us?
A: No but I am afraid for your life.
P: As I am afraid for yours. What should we do so you all don’t consider us weak and useless and let us help out?
A: Alright, its not time for argument. As you said, the victory is ours.
P: And seems like you can take some of the credit for that. (he smiles) Did you win the war?
A: Not yet. Surely Samano will be better prepared at the next battle. But as you said, we are winning so far. (she kisses him) what was that’s for?
P: Your prize for the victory…
(he embraces her tightly)
Narino wants to set up camp for the night so they can eat before they go into Popayan. What about Samano? Narino does not expect him to put resistance, but they will go prepared anyway.
Ciro gets to say goodbye to Domingo before dying, and also tells him he has not been as loyal a slave as Domingo thinks, but does not get to tell him why.
Narino asks the priest Fernandez to say a mass for the fallen. Father asks if he lost a close one. Narino says all his soldiers are close to him. Alejo and Arcos do a scan of their own, but looking for Leandro.
Tonito and Cap Caval follow Samano and the troops toward Popayan but don’t get to catch up with them. Narino congratulates them for their valour, something Samano lacks.
In Popayan Francisco is bragging around town that Samano must have won a landslide… Samano rides by him, Francisco then stops Leandro, who tells him they lost. Leandro yells for everyone to get inside their homes… Francisco gets to the Valencia’s, and tells Gaspar the news. Gaspar says their wives are at the plaza. Francisco says this city is calm, surely nothing will happen. (at that moment a big thunder/explosion is heard)
As Narino and the ‘rebels’ return to their camp and celebrate the battle victory (including Pola and Alejo embracing) they all hear the big explosion. Narino immediately knows it was not just a barrel of gunpowder, it was too loud and strong for that. Alejo and Arcos worry that the sound came from Popayan and head over there to investigate. Gaspar also goes out to investigate, but Francisco stays saying it is safer.
At camp, Pola asks their doctor to help a enemy wounded soldier… She encourages him. Viviano and Pedro come and seem to celebrate their hits. Pola says it is always bad for men to kill each other, but it is not your fault. Thank God you are alright.
Gaspar returns to the house with the wives. Francisco wants to know what happened but pays no attention to MT who comes by Leandro’s arm. Francisco guesses Narino is attacking. Leandro says it was not Narino but Gen Samano, he had the station (cuartel) by the plaza blown up to get rid of the arms and gunpowder they had so Narino won’t take them. Gaspar tells Francisco that along with destroying the cuartel, Samano also basically destroyed the town plaza and killed about 20 people… Francisco asks Leandro if Samano will hand over the city to the enemy. Leandro says at this time they are in no shape to defend the city. Fran is afraid Narino will take over the city. Gaspar asks what worries him since he always gets on the side of the winners. Gaspar and Eusebia remember MI, so Gaspar will send someone to the convent to ensure she is ok. MT asks Gaspar to get her a doctor to look at her face. Gaspar says sure. Up to now, Francisco is not even concerned about his wife, so when he finally notices she is hurt on the face, Leandro says ‘I was wondering if you were never going to ask her’.Eusebia will fix her up.
At Narino camp, Iglesias and Arellano notice the food is scarce. Narino asks Pola if they are out of food, he is worried about the women eating, but Pola says don’t worry about us, we will make do. Narino tells Pola he needs her to obey his next instruction. He does not want women in the battlefield. Is that clear? Pola says of course.
