La Fuerza del Destino #10 Tue 08/16/11 The Matchmaker from Hell

Good evening fellow citizens of Viewerville! Sara here, subbing for recapper extraordinaire: Gloria. I have a more *ahem* drive-by style. All details will return tomorrow. :-)

Refrito
Wheeere's the baby?

Tonight

  • Carlota wakes the dead rest of the house with her cries. The baby has disappeared! Where oh where can he be? LuCrayCray thinks Encarnación (was that her name?) must have come back and gotten him. Carly is beside herself and wants to call the cops but MamaCrayCray says no, folks may discover the baby belonged to Maripaz. They'll just wait until the morning and see if Encanación comes back. If she doesn't come back, we'll know she took her. Maripaz finally (!) comes in and asks what's going on. Lucia says someone took the baby! Maripaz is "huh?"
  • Benito is happy for Ivan's good fortune with Old Man Tony Maguire. Ivan is not going to forget what Benito did for him. Pretty sure he said something about getting him a good job when he "makes it big."
  • The next morning in Guaymas, LuCrayCray has gotten up early to catch Encarnación. She pays her off and says her services aren't needed they are leaving. Encar wants to say goodbye to Carly but LCC shoos her off.
  • Carly can't understand why Encar would take the baby and still wants to call the police. LCC is adamant they not do that. It would really just be a waste of time. The police would find Encar, jail her, take the baby away and return it back to them and they are stuck with the baby. Maripaz agrees and thinks Carly should just let it drop. LCC lets them know that they will tell Gerry the baby got adopted and that's that. Maripaz agrees Carly says she knew LCC was hard, despotic and cruel, but had no idea she was such a monster (OK, I like Carly, but she must be blind.)  LCC says she's going to protect her family. Carly says Teo must be turning over in his grave. Maripaz totally agrees with Mama. Can you imagine if she had called the police? Everything would have come out in the open? LCC reminds them they are to tell Gerry the baby was a adopted. She swears her daughters to secrecy. Crazy Be-yotch is crazy.
  • Obviously the fam has returned to Alamos. Lucia is asking Cleto about Pipo; confirming friends have taken him. Cleto tells Lucia about the death of Ali and Ivan's escape to the "extranjero."
  • LuCrayCray is screeching to Gentle Gerry on the phone. He asks about Maripaz, the baby. She's tired of Gerry calling they are divorced. He has a right to see the girls. Lucia comes in and asks about Alicia. LuCrayCray does what she does best: yells. "Don't mention her or Ivan again!" and hands the phone over so Lucia can talk to dad. Lucia is taken aback.
  • Maripaz is in her room worrying about her weight. Lucia tells her about Ali's death and Maripaz is like "who?" (wow. cold.) Lucia has to remind her "Ivan's mom". Lucia tells Maripaz that Mom really flipped when she mentioned Ali and Ivan. Maripaz doesn't want to hear about them either.
  • Carly and Lucia are talking. Lucia is asking about Ali. Carly tells her she died of an illness. Lucia wants to know if Carly thinks Ivan will come back. Carly tells her she doesn't know. It is a sad time and they need to foget (olvidar.)
  • At the same time in LA, Ivan is hearing the same. He can't believe what Old Man McGuire is telling him. There is a quick recap of all the grievous sins committed against Ivan by the Curiel Crazies. His left was left a shambles. OMM says the same pretty much happened to him. So lucky we met each other! OMM trusts Ivan, but he's not yet secure with him. OMM asks who Ivan's dad was. Ivan asks if OMM knows something. OMM is "just curious." They seal the deal with whisky. If Old Man McGuire's son had lived he'd be Ivan's age.
Años (and new hairdos) después

  • Grown up Lucia has returned from the market. Cleto's hair is grayer and the fridge is on the fritz.
  • Carly does not like Juan Slimy, but she thinks LCC should ask him about recommending a new administrator for the ranch. Leandro is inept and she suspects he's robbing them.
  • Lucia enters and says she has good news. LuCrayCray doesn't want to hear it if it's about Gerry. Apparently he's returned to Alamos and working at his little business. Carly and LCC exchange words concerning Gerry. Gerry has to support his family. LuCrayCray criticizes Gerry's new family: a blind sister-in-law. Lucia interrupts to tell them she got a job in a private school. Carly is please. LuCrayCray not so much. Now everyone will know they are so hard up the girls have to work. I'm thinking child psychology (Lucia's degree) is a bit more respectable than say...being a prostitute. LuCrayCray would prefer that Lucia and Saul to set a wedding date (ewww, she's with him?) Lucia is a bit disgusted and leaves. Carly thinks LuLu should be trying to find a husband for Maripaz. LuLu says Maripaz has turned out to be a real headache and it's all Ivan's fault. Carly defends him. Lulu says you always defend him and Carly says no I don't always defend him, only when you talk about him.
  • Maripaz is clubbing. Saul and Antolin are buds. They compare Maripaz and Lucia. I didn't catch it all, but I'm pretty sure it's along the lines of some girls you marry, some you...well, you know.
  • Later that evening Maripaz returns home and bawls loudly enough for Lucia to hear. Lucia comes to her room and lectures about her drinking. Maripaz doesn't want to hear her sermons. Lucia wonders why she does it. Maripaz blames Ivan. Lucia tells her she needs to get over it. Maripaz says he was so handsome and no one made love like he did. (That creepy old guy knew a hit when he saw it!)
  • At McGuire Corp they are speaking English until it's just Old Man McGuire and Ivan. OMM has good news and bad news. Good news: the adoption papers have gone through-Ivan is now his adopted son (at the age of 30 mas o menos! Beanie time!) The bad news: Max has the Alonso virus cancer and he will have to be put down. (I wish they had put the other Max down.)
  • Maripaz is stomping around the plaza. Her car is kaput. Luckily a nice young man knows a bit about cars and may be able to help.
  • Old Man McGuire and Ivan miss Max. OMM wants to take a trip. Maybe the two of them could go together. Ivan says he'd love to, but right now he's got some bidnez. OMM tells him some things are more important. Doesn't Ivan think about his son? Sure he does! Is he alive, dead? Did Maripaz abort him or no? And his friends. Camilo never answered his letters. Ivan starts to talk about confronting Juan Slimy and OMM says he wasn't talking about revenge. Iván's thinking it, though. OMM wants Ivan to return to Mexico.
  • Turns out the young man that helped Maripaz was none other than David Mondragon. LuCrayCray is beside herself with joy. Carly and Lulu thank David for bringing her home and helping out with the car. They try to get him to stay and visit, but he has to go. Carly and Lulu try to talk him up but Maripaz isn't buying it. Carly thinks it would be a good time for Lulu to call about the recommendation for a new ranch administrator.
  • Ok, I need some folks to fill in the blanks. Ivan says he can't return because LuCrayCray threatened to have him arrested for killing one of her workers. I'm pretty sure that OMM tells Ivan that he checked into some things and that Ivan's name is not attached to the death of the worker so Lulu must not have sworn out a complaint? Ivan is still unsure about returning.
  • Lucia is visiting her dad, but he's not home yet. Carolina the blind sister-in-law is. Turns out the sister married to Gentle Gerry died of cancer. There's a young son, too: Alex. Gerry comes in. Hugs hugs. She can't stay for dinner. She has to go to the library. She got a job. Yay!
  • OMM works to convince Ivan to return to Mexico. So many words. He starts to leave and Ivan thanks "Tony" and later changes to "Padre." Ivan has flashbacks.
  • Gerry's deceased wife was Beatriz. Carolina has been very helpful and supportive. He and Lucia yammer a bit about Maripaz and LuCrayCray.
  • LuCrayCray and JJ talk about a new administrator. He can't recommend anyone and he bad mouths his sons a bit. He takes a little time to bust a move and Lulu rebuffs him (only barely.) The two hatch a plan to get Maripaz and David married. Something about dowry, which Maripaz doesn't have BUT it will stop the chismes about her being a *bleep* and a tramp and him being a *bleep* (whatever he said.)
  • LuCrayCray approaches Maripaz with the plan. Maripaz is not really on board and asks her mom if she knows what they say about him. LuCrayCray claims not to know, but informs MP that word on the street is that she's a tramp. MP denies it. LuCrayCray reminds her that she's almost 30 and no one's beating down the door. LuCrayCray tells her to think about it. Maripaz flashes back to that hot Ivan lovin' (I really think he missed his calling in the adult film industry.)
  • Saul and Antolin are talking and I gather that what Saul really likes about Lucia is that she is a virgin. And for Saul it's very important the HE is the first one in his wife's life (and I assume only. He probably sucks in the sack, but the poor wife will never know.) Antolin says some thing about Saul bringing a surprise to the bedroom (?) They plan on going out partying.
  • So Alex is telling Gerry all about the goal he made with his head. And later he's sent off to get ready for bed. Carolina is a little worried about the Lucia/Saul pairing. He throws money around and he likes to have "aventuras" (wink wink.) All this is according to Antolin, whom Gerry doesn't trust at all. He has faith in Lucia's good judgement.
  • Saul and Lucia enjoy a meal together. He says something about her not having to work after they marry. She says whoa nellie, it's a little early for that. We've only been dating about three months. We're still getting to know each other. A little argument since she's, you know...smart, independent... all those pesky qualities I suspect the Mondragons abhor. According to Saul the Caveman woman of their class don't work. They take care of their family.
  • Now, despite Saul neanderthal attitudes, Lucia is making out with him in front of the house. He pushes for more...they are engaged after all, she says no. She wants to enter her marriage a virgin. She leaves him cooling his heels outside the gate.
  • David has returned the now working car and he even took care of paying for it, too. Maripaz says in exchange he can have the honor of taking her out...oh and since ladies don't pay he can pick up the tab. He looks terrified. LuCrayCray is thrilled.
  • Ivan has come to call on OMM/Tony/Padre. He has decided to make the trip to Mexico. Ivan has dual citizenship now so travel won't be a big deal. OMM/Tony/Padre has some news. The Curiel Rancho is near ruin and again with all the words. I miss the details, but did I understand that JJ's ranch is suffering financially as well? Apparently he doesn't have the capital to update some of his agricultural practices? It seems JJ is walking a tighrope (la cuerda floja) as well.

Avances:

  • Ivan's headin' for Mexico
  • David is sold to the devil (That's code for the poor sap is marrying Maripaz.)

Comments:
Sara great recap and thank you.

So is the child that Gerry has Ivan's son? Yes Gerry is that dumb even more than Max Sandoval why who stays married to a crazy ball breaking shrew like that for that many years?

So now they are foisting off the selfish slut onto poor David? What a poor sacrificial lamb i suspect this is what happened to poor Gerry too.

Antolin told Saul he should make sure that Lucia is a virgin he doesn't want to be surprised on his wedding night. We can see he thinks just like his father.

Carlotta it took you this log to recommend replacing Leandro?

What a perfect time for Ivan the successful to return as both ranches are in dire need of money.

"So is the child that Gerry has Ivan's son?"

I wondered the same myself.

Sara "Just the facts, ma'am" works fine for me. I totally enjoyed your detailed recap. If Lucrazie stole the baby, then how did Gerry get him? Well, I guess that's for the plot to develop...the whole reason we watch these things.

My Spanish is really not up to following some of these conversations, but I kind of thought the Antolín (yuck) and Saúl (eew) exchange was more on the order of:

S: She's a real virgen and I want to be the first one there.
A: How do you know she's any good if she won't put out?
S: Well, I'm going to sample the goods ahead of time; so there's no surprise on the wedding night.

Saúl honey, you can't have your cake and eat it too. I don't understand this "compromiso" thing. How do people so obviously unsuited to each other become engaged? What makes him assume this girl is going to marry him? Did she actually agree to it; or is it an old-fashioned arrangement by the families?

And as for Davíd; perhaps he really is gay—hence the look of terror at being pressured into a date with Maripaz.

Ixv-I really wondered about Saul and Lucia too. It did cross my mind that their's was also an "arranged" engagement.

I apologize for all my blanks last night. It was our first day back to work yesterday and all my synapses weren't firing.

Thanks so much for filling in Sara! That was great.

Poor, poor David. He probably isn't even gay, just deeply messed up about male-female relationships due to his twisted father and wimpy mother. His brother Saul is just as messed up, only he does the opposite-- he acts macho with women and tries to get in all of their beds, like dear old dad.

I now totally think that Gerry stole the baby and is raising him as his son. The tip off for me is that Lucia never met his second wife (she mentioned this while looking at her picture and chatting with Carolina). So in order for that to have happened (Gerry married, has a child, then widowered), means that Gerry had have been out of the picture for at least a year or two. Enough time to build a good cover story. My qquestion when watching that scene was, did he really marry Carolina's or was that all a cover story? How did he meet Carolina and her sister? How did they get involved with the baby plan?

It many ways it is right that Gerry should raise his and Alicia's grandchild, after failing Alicia and their child (who would have been the same age).

Carolina said that Antolin is really good to her. What's that about?! The Antolin we know and hate? Really? Even Gerry couldn't believe that. And did he really say he trusted Lucrezia's judgement? I thought he said he trusts Lucia's judgement.

I am sure Lucia will be dumping Saul soon enough. That caveman attitude won't fly with her for long.

*did he really marry Carolina's sister...

(missed word above)

LuCrayCray could have put Ivan Jr. In the foundling home, then Gerry came along and adopted him (or got wife 2 to adopt him).

Sara Sara Sara, no apologies Please!!! Your work is so good and s-o-o-o appreciated. From where I sit, your synapses seem to be firing on all cylinders.

Now I'm totally confused. Who is Antolín, in relation to Carolina? I watch Alborada at the same time where Marcel Córdoba plays a super good guy and my brains can't adjust to this scumbag character. So maybe Carolina is a confused as I am.

Vivi, you may be right about Davíd, but I actually hope he is gay and that they take this opportunity to show some real human dimension in a sympathetic (not pathetic) gay character and not just stock clowns like Pipino Pichoni

Vivi-Oh my bob. You are right. He said "Lucia". Too many "Lu's" last night. And I did pick up Lucia wishing she had met the deceased Beatriz, but I was a little hazy on all that because I didnt' feel like I had a lot of context. I was like "huh? married? kid?"

This is what happens when you do a recap with just one viewing and taking notes at the same time. lol

I'll go back and fix the Lucia thing now.

Found this article on adult adoption in the US. Here are excerpts and a link to the whole article:

"Adult adoptions appear to be rising in America...Jillian Titus is 29, and an executive at Nintendo in Redmond, Wash. Her new parents — Sandra, 49, and Ross, 46 — also work at the video game company. The trio met at the office in 2008 and, initially, bonded over their Boston terriers. They later asked a judge to approve their homemade family for two reasons: love and money...The most common scenario he sees: former foster children — now adults — who are being adopted by their long-time foster parents. In rare cases, adoption experts say, adults who have lost or are estranged from their biological parents befriend older people who begin to feel like mothers and fathers — and they ultimately seek to legalize that emotional attachment...Most states allow adult adoptions, according to the National Council For Adoption, though several restrict the process.

Great work. I had to rewatch the episode this morning because of a phone call last night.

Alex has to be Ivan's son; compare him to young Ivan. Adorable kid.

I hate that Max is gone; what a beautiful dog (I'm a cat person but wolfy- and foxy-looking dogs are awesome).

Anyone remember Pedro Armendariz Sr? Here is how he looked in From Russia With Love:

And here is PA Jr in Undefeated:

Blu beat me to a lot of the comments.

I don't think David is gay, but lies have a way of becoming truth when they are repeated often enough. Until he knocks somebody up nobody is going to believe otherwise.

And he needs a makeover; he's a slob.

Sara, I thought I heard Lucrezia as well, and couldn't believe my ears. But I have only a stone age TV, so couldn't rewind and check. I'm sure Vivi's right though. Lucia makes sense. Lucrazie doesn't.

The passage of time has not been kind to Lucrazy's hairdo. This new plastered down super-straightened do is no improvement over the flying flip of yore.

Sara, I loved your "drive-by recap"! If I remember correctly, you are a teacher. I wish you buena suerte with the new school year (being a former teacher myself).

I was so confused with Gerry's new family. Thank you all for 'splaining!

Sara, I loved your references to our last tn disaster, TDA, especially "Alonso virus". Actually I also preferred Max (perro) to Max (galan, TDA)! He seemed to have a lot more brains and a more under-control hair-do.

Sondie

I did hear him say he trusted Lucia's judgement.

Man, it never dawned on me that the kid (Alex?) could be Ivan's. For some reason I thought him a bit too old. Didn't only 5 years pass? That kid looks about 8. I thought it was Gerry's deceased wife's son of another man. Oops. Would be cool if he's Ivan's. Then I'd say Gerry is not as dumb as he looks lol.

I like CrayCray's old hairstyle better. And her Mom's too.

Seeing the little memory of Ivan/Maripaz made me want to go back and see those episodes I missed when they were like little rabbits.

So the preview made it seem that Ivan still loved Maripaz. I was a bit taken aback by that. I was assuming that his feelings for her were gone, thus opening the way for Lucia. Hmmmm.

Hilda- More like 10 years have passed. Lucrezia scolded Maripaz about being nearly 30 with no husband. And 15 year old Lucia has turned into a 25 year old doctoral degree student.

Well apparently Maripaz can't forget her Ivan loving "anos depues" either because she said to Lucia nobody ever made love to her like Ivan.

That's probably none of the people she's slept with loved her like Ivan did.

And now nobody wants to marry her because she's the town ho, which is ironic because the whole reason for getting rid of Ivan Jr. was so Maripaz would seem respectable enough to marry, but she's STILL not respectable enough to marry.

LuCrayCray should have married her off to Ivan. Now she has to marry the Town Ho off to the Town Gay Dude.

Maybe if Maripaz had stayed in school and learned a skill, she could have gone off to Mexico and had a career and found somebody to marry (hey, Alonso from STud is free, and he looks just like Ivan!) Nobody would have known about Maripaz's baby in Mexico...she probably still has time to pull it off.

Poor little me, whine, whine Maripaz. Her life has been ruined. Mainly because no one else makes love like Ivan did! LOL! YOU kicked him out of your life, lady, 'cause he wasn't good enought to keep around.

And she insists she's not a golfa? LOL! That's a good one! Only in your own mind, girl.

Such a dumbass just like her mother, but more pathetic as she won't lift a finger for herself but expects it all to be handed to her.

Wow, Sandra looks great! (I think I caught my husband smiling. He still remembers the belly dancing.)

Audrey

I like this novela so far, good acting, plot that's not too ridiculous (yet), but the camera work is throwing me off a little. One scene, they're all in Guaymas, and then in the very next, they're back in Alamos. There's no break in between. Seems that for CME and others I've watched, they'll go to another group of characters in between so there isn't such a jump.

And I sure hope they explain why someone as ambitious as Lucia would even bother with a jerk like Saul. (Chema, you've changed!) She could do so much better.

Tks so much Sara.

I'm in my usual state of confusion.
Gerado married Beatriz after he & Lucrecia split??????
Carolina is Beatriz's sister & Antolín & Camilo's mother??????

I immediately thought the kid was Iván's, he appears the right age.
So I guess Gerado stole him. But wouldn't he let Carlota know?

Get out your GPS beanies, Iván is heading back to Mex & we know it's just a step across the border from LA.

Variopinta

Variopinta-

The audience has never met the late Beatriz. It doesn't seem that Beatriz and her sister Carolina were from Sonora. Most likely Mexico City as Lucia and Lucrezia mentioned that he had only recently returned to Sonora and started his business.

Celia, Alicia's BFF, is Antolin's mother (as well as Camilo, and the daughter whose name I can't remember right now). We don't yet know why Antolin is hanging out with Carolina. Could he actually have a heart and has a soft spot for the sweet, blind young woman? Maybe, like Lucia is for Saul, Carolina is Antolin's girl that you take home to mama, while he has all his other ladies on the side.

I'm thinking the Saul/Lucia pair-up is an arranged match by LuCrayCray and Juan Hurl-me.

It looks like my initial assumption the Gerry took the baby is panning out, looks like the young boy could be Ivan's. I can see him not saying anything to Carlota and Lucia since they are under the influence of Lucrazy.

When JJ and LCC were talking about David and Maripaz they bleeped the maricon and golfa, at least I think that was what JJ was calling his son and Maripaz. He is such a sleaze I feel like scrubbing myself with bleach when he is on scene. Yuck.

Today we will be attending a wedding, poor David.

They left golfa in. They bleeped out another word, which I assume is a stronger form of saying golfa. It could be SO may things. We once made a list of all the ways to say slut/loose woman in Spanish that we hear in tns. It was a LONG list.

I wish I had been around for that list!!

I think the daughter of Celia is Carmen?

I got the impression that Maripaz's friend Judit is David's sister/Esther and JJ's daughter.

Oh, it was quite the list Sara! Yes, Judith, Saul and David are all Ivan's siblings by JJ.

Looks like his two brothers are going to be involved with the two women in his life-- Maripaz and Lucia.

Sara: I do enjoy your rapid fire machine-gunning style! LOL. Thanks for the recap and for subbing.

One of my fav lines:
"A little argument since she's, you know...smart, independent... all those pesky qualities I suspect the Mondragons abhor."

Tks Vivi
Was it Celia that was Alicia's BFF?

Variopinta

Vivi, I missed your answer to my last question. Since I can't sign on, I can't delete
