La Fuerza del Destino #4 Fri 08/05/11 Esplendor in the Grass--At Least Till The Train Whistle Blasts

Capítulo 4

[My dvr cut off the last few minutes also, so I’m not quite sure where they ended things last night.--ed.]

Alicia has ironed Ivan’s clothes and brought them to him. She’s up for a chat and asks how the driving lessons went. More specifically, she wants to know if Maripaz has been rude to him. When Ivan says no, Ali says she mentions it because Maripaz has been pretty much a pain in the patoot with everyone else in the house.

Mari tells Judith she’s making progress with hunkalicious Ivan. She knows he’s attracted to her. Judi seems a bit scandalized and wonders if he’s dared to make advances. (At least that’s the drift I’m getting, not being up on the Valley Girl vernacular equivalent in Spanish). Naw, but she’s impatient [me canso] and she’s the one throwing herself at/ being daring with [aventarse] him. She likes him and thinks he’s fun, even if he is the servant’s son.

Lucia, meanwhile, whines to Mari because she can’t join her and Van the Man during those driving lessons. Lucia knows when to fold ‘em and leaves.

Later that day Van and Mari “take a break” during the lesson. The two walk and talk together. She tells him school and studying aren’t her thing. He says going on to college would make her more worldly and prepare her for a career if she wanted one. Mari snickers. Is he crazy? No way! She plans to marry somebody wealthy enough to maintain her in the style to which she’s become accustomed. She gets bored with the conversation and tells him to kiss her. He doesn’t think it’s a good idea. She gives him a peck on the lips. He figures she’s serious enough and decides to go with the flow. They kiss and kiss again. He starts to kiss her one more time but Mari ducks and heads back. He smiles. (Yep, ‘least he’s made it to first base.) He saunters back in his high tops and hoodie (no doubt hopeful of scoring a home run sooner than later).

At Casa de los Curiel, Celia stops by the kitchen for a private chat with Alicia.

Outside, Mari and Van pull up in the Jeep. She wants to make out in the front seat. He’s afraid somebody will see them. “—It wouldn’t be polite to refuse me and I love kissing you!” Smooch. “Love it!” Smooch. “--Love it!” No way the kid can resist.

Celia’s there to gripe at Alicia for getting involved with a married man…again. Alicia can’t help it and says she is in love with Don Gerardo. She believes he feels the same towards her, tho’ no, she doesn’t expect him to leave his wife for a maid. Well, Celia warns her against getting pregnant like the last time. Alicia is certain that Gerry is being very careful. (Oh sure! Anybody want to take that bet?)

Maripaz gets back to her room and calls Judi for a favorcito. She needs her to loan her her car for a day and then disappear for a while. Mari plans to tell her parents that she’s going with her and her other friends for a picnic in the countryside, but really she’ll be out with the Vanster. Judi’s game as long as Mari gives her all the juicy details afterwards.

Outside, Van and Gerry discuss engineering. Gerry was a civil engineer. He’d like to get back into it eventually, he says. Leandro arrives for an unexpected business meeting with Shrew-crecia (that’s a keeper, Sara!). Gerry and Leandro head inside to sit down with her. She sneerfully dismisses hubby Gerry with an imperial demand. (I grimace just looking at the hag. This broad definitely got hit with the wrong end of an ugly-fruit stick. Anybody else notice how her lips are frozen in a permanently sneery snarl every time she speaks? I can only imagine what it took for old Ger to get it up the two times he was at bat.) Gerry, not one to make a scene, heels immediately if not sooner. He waits outside in the driveway, tail between his legs and his head between his forepaws.

Lucrecia wants Leandro to take charge of administering the ranch. And hubby? She sniffs. Leandro’s got a better feel for things on the ranch. Leandro walks back out and says so long to Gerry.

Gerry now heads back inside to confront his wife about treating him like dirt in front of the hired help. She tells him Leandro’s now in charge of the ranch. “—But he can barely even write!” “—Well, you have no vision in running the ranch, despite all your learning.” “—You mean you’re firing me?” “—Let’s just say that now you’re free to spend your time doing whatever you like.” He complains to her about this being a major insult. She snarls back that hers and her daughters’ inheritance are at stake. “—So, I’m just a useless good-for-nothing. We should just get divorced-–and right away!” No chance, says Lu-Screechia because he wouldn’t want to expose the family to the kind of scandal that would cause. “--Leave the ranch, keep up appearances, but that’s all.  Divorce is not possible.”

Carlota wonders if her daughter’s lost her mind [perder el juicio] when she hears what her daughter pulled, insulting hubby Gerry that way! (Sort of makes you wonder what kind of man engendered the shrew-creature long ago. Perhaps Carlota was raped and had no choice but to keep the kid that came after.) Snarling Daughter whines that the ranch is not doing well financially. Heck, they can’t even afford to buy Maripaz a car, let alone send her back to private school in The States! Carlota loses it and let’s her Shrew-Baby have a piece of her mind. A car? Frivolous! As for school, Maripaz can go here! And, how can she be so sure that Leandro won’t steal from her??? Either way, says Shrew-crecia, they’ll earn more than with Gerry running things.

Mama doesn’t agree and says she’s the one who has the final say [usufructuaria/usufructuary=the one with the legal right to enjoy use or profits of something] til the day she kicks off. Snarl-Baby talks Mama C into going along with it by saying if it doesn’t work out she’ll ask Gerry to take the rancho over again. Carlota says only as long as she keeps a close eye on Leandro.

At the same time, Ivan’s playing with Pipo, his Doberman, when Mari comes out into the yard. She tells him the dog frightens her. Off goes doggy, who, supposedly wouldn’t hurt a fly. Mari flirts while he cautiously looks over her shoulder to make sure nobody sees the two of them together. She sweet-talks Van into meeting her in town where she’ll pick him up the next day for a drive and a picnic in the country.

The following day, Maripaz and Ivan meet up. They set up their picnic in a romantic and very secluded area by some lake. Mari pours a toast for themselves and her return home. They stare into each other’s eyes. He tells her how he missed her and how much he loves being with her. They toast. Salud! She tells him how especially romantic he sounds. It seems he cares for her. He says, well, actually, he does. “Same here. I like you a lot! You don’t know how much.” “—Likewise.” He lets himself get carried away while she kisses him all over and starts to undress him. He hesitates and then says he’s not got anything for protection [no soy preparado]. She tells him not to worry. The school in The States gave all their students contraceptives just in case [por si las moscas]. He still doesn’t know if they should go all the way. She asks if he wants to. Well sure! Well, she does too. Amid much panting and depantsing, young love and an abundance of hormones there is muchisimo esplendor in the grass.

A while later, as they’re walking back to the car, the two discuss what a great time they’ve had that afternoon together. (Uh, yeah!) Van, quite the gentleman, admits he’s feeling uncomfortable. (Perhaps the correct word here is guilty?) He doesn’t know how he’ll face her father the next time he sees him. Mari says, well hey, they’re young and have a right to do it. (Viewerville stops to wonder if that sentiment was part of the American private school’s sociology curriculum, or the writers’ take on American Education’s dedication to student self-actualization and/or cultivation of self-esteem in their young charges.) “--Besides, we love each other!” “—Really? You love me?” “—Yep! Lots!” She starts smooching on him, literally hopping up and on for another ride. Van may be still a bit too tame, but he’s definitely game. The camera fades away as the two have another round of red robin a-bob-bob-bobbin’ in the park.

That night at dinner, Lucrecia announces to dreamy-eyed Maripaz that regretfully, she won’t be able to continue studying outside the country. She, though, will be able to transfer to a university there to continue her studies. Mari says not a problem for her. She’d just as soon nix the college, anyway. She doesn’t enjoy school and sees no reason to go on since all she’ll be doing is getting married and having kids. Gerry and the others can’t understand the lackadaisical attitude. Carly insists it will help pass the time between now and when she finds a good husband and is finally ready to marry. “--But Grams, it’s just not my thing.” “--Oh? So you’re just going to laze around?” [andar de vaga] No, says Mari. She was thinking of learning tennis, decorating, whatever. Gerry insists she’s going to college but she gets her back up and says no! “—What? Are you going to chain me up and take me there? Send me and I promise I’ll flunk [trono] cuz I'll never even crack open a book!” (Well, that apple didn’t fall far from the tree, did it?)

After dinner, Gerry has a discussion with Shrew-crecia. With the ranch in financial straits, Maripaz is best off getting a degree in something useful, he says. Sorry, says Lucrecia. “--She’s always been obstinate [testaruda]. What do you expect me to do?” Well, say Gerry, convince her somehow. “--Well, if it’s so important, why don’t you try? Be useful!” He sniffs like tell me what you really think of me and says BTW, he’s not sleeping with her anymore. He’ll move into the spare room. [de tiliche] (Two decades to finally put his foot down to Screech-Creature here and all he can manage is to tell her he’ll move into the spare room?) “--And cause a scandal with the help? No way!” “--What does it matter? I am a useless nobody as far as you’re concerned.” [ser un cero a la izquierda= less than nothing, literally, left of the decimal point] They grouse over it a bit till she finally flounces out and says take their room! She’ll sleep with Mom! He gives her backside a well-deserved eye roll.

Carlota asks what’s up as Lu-screechia storms into her mama’s room. Lu-screechia says no way she’s going to allow the servants to find out Gerry and she aren’t sharing a bed any more. So she’s staying there a few nights till things blow over. Carly doesn’t want her there. “--My room is for me alone! And besides, I snore! [roncar]” No problem, says Screech as she steam-rolls over Mama. She’ll stick cotton in her ears. He’ll be over it in a while. The two agree that the only servant who’d know the change in sleeping arrangements will be Alicia since she takes care of the bedrooms. Lu-Screechia orders Mama tomorrow to tell Alicia to keep her trap shut! Carly warns that maybe the servants won’t catch on, but the kids surely will. “--Tell them it’s just Mom and Dad being angry again.” Carly sighs.

Carly warns her daughter that things are not fixed so easily. Why doesn’t she just face facts and get a divorce. “--Society doesn’t frown on it the way they did in my day. Heck, after a bit they forget about you.” “--NO!” And that’s the end of that!

Carly mentions in a fit of pique that she’s pissed that Mari refuses to go on to college and that to top it off Lu-Screechia has allowed it. “--This family’s become a disaster!” “—Like I can do anything about it! You tell me what to say to her! Tell me!” Point taken. Carly goes back to reading her novel. (Damn! It’s déjà vu all over again! Viewerville begins to question whether it’s watching a telenovela or reality T.V.)

Late in the evening after everyone’s gone to bed, Mari sneaks through the garden and over into Van’s room. He’s half undressed and finishing some homework. “—Oh, so this is your room.” “—Yeah, it’s adequate for the son of a servant.” She closes in, oozing of sensuality. She places sweet kisses on his face as she speaks to him. “—Yes, but it’s tidy and clean and that’s what counts.” Mari tells him about her decision not to go to college. He thinks that’s a bad idea. She is all over him. “--Well, that’s how it is. [ni modo]” He’s fighting the urge to screw her brains out. “—We can’t do this.” “--Well then, kiss me good-night!” He warns her this is crazy cuz somebody might see them. She taunts and teases. She throws him back onto his bed. “--Yeah, I’m crazy, but for you!” She coaxes and cajoles. He’s willing and the spirit is weaker with every passing second. She pouts up at him. “--You’re going to make me think you don’t love me now.” “—How can you think I don’t love you when you’ve been an obsession my whole life long?” “—Then show me!” He stops fighting. He begins to kiss back and they go at it like a couple of minks.

The next morning Leandro shows up at Juan Jaime’s hacienda to introduce himself and suggest they do a little bit of back-room bidnez. It would seem that Leandro is crooked as a dog’s hind leg and he’s got a proposition for Juan Jeil-me! (Achtung!) Everbody’s got problems with the drought. It’s made the possibility of a decent harvest pretty poor. Juan Jeil-me (Achtung!) agrees that he doesn’t have much access to water and that a well went dry to make things even worse. Leandro’s now administrator of the Curiel rancho which has an abundance of water; and Leandro’s always short of cash. For the appropriate amount of greased palm Juan Jeil-me (Achtung!) could have all the water he could use. Is he interested? JJM asks if the other rancho will be affected at all. Leandro assures him it won’t. The one thing it’s got more than enough of [salta y sobra] is water. Ok. JJM is in. “—How much do you want for this little favor?”

In town, Ivan and BFF Camilo are unloading produce. Cam wants to know if he and the rich babe have gotten it on [conchabar= to mixed it up] yet. No, there’s no romance and no, they aren’t doin’ the deed, he answers. (A gentleman never tells, remember?)

Back at the rancho, Gerry tries talking sense to Mari about having wasted her schooling in the U.S. since it’s been all for naught without her continuing on to college. She only knows half of what she should. Mari insists she knows enough. Besides, she feels superior to the rest of the kids in her crowd and that is what counts. With what she knows she’s bound to get a decent husband. Gerry gives up and changes the subject. “—How are the driving lessons?” Mari says great, but they’re not needed now. She’s doing fine.

In another part of the house, Carly finds Ali making beds. She explains the new family estrangement arrangement and asks for her complete discretion. Alicia can be trusted.

At the club (?) Mari lets Judith in on all the juicy details with Ivan, The Hunk with Muy Prime Junk. She brags that she’s got him eating out of her hand. They met up, they had wine in a secluded part of the park, they kissed and then….they made love! “--He’s passionate, hot to trot, [fogoso=ardent, burning with desire] and with a body that drives me crazy! [volverse loco]” Jud asks how long she plans to go out with him. Mari says till she gets tired of him, but really, she thinks she feels something for him. Jud is scandalized impactada. “--But he’s a servant’s son!” “--Yeah, but when you come down to it, he’s a man—a man who’s worth the trouble!!” [vale la pena]

Back at Casa Carlota, Gerry finds Ali in the kitchen and tells her he’s stopped sleeping with his wife. He is ready to get a divorce. Van walks in on them. Gerry quickly changes the subject to looking for him and needing to tell him Mari no longer thinks she needs driving lessons. Van agrees. Gerry says fine, then he’s relieved of duty.  Gerry exits stage right.   Once he's gone, Ali tells Van she’s glad to hear it because she’s always worried Maripaz will get upset with him about something and then Sra. Lu-Screechia will get on their case about it. Van says no problems so far….

On his way back to his room, Mari grabs Ivan and pulls him behind the bushes. No more driving lessons since she can come and see him in his room. He’ll miss their chats. They’ll talk in his room. But he wants to be with her every day. She’s not going anywhere. He tells her he’s in love with her. They start another hot and steamy smooch fest as Lucia is crossing through the back yard and spots them. Ivan realizes she’s seen them and races after her. Mari’s afraid Lucia will spill the beans to Mama.

Ivan catches up to Lucia. He’s sorry she had to see them. He explains he’s always had a thing for her big sis. Now they’re going steady. He loves Maripaz. She doesn’t understand how he could love Mairpaz after the way Mari’s always treated him. (How to explain to a 13 year old that a guy at that age is a glutton for punishment when good sex with a hot chick who wants it all the time is involved? Heck! Maripaz is a college guy's wet dream come true!) Lucia woefully tells the Vanster that she wishes he were in love with her instead of her sister and then races away. He stops to file that fact away for later consideration cuz Mari walks up to him to ask if she’s planning to tell Mama. He hopes not, but doesn’t know for sure. Mari races off after her kid sis to do some major damage control.

Mari finds Lucia crying in the bedroom and convinces her that if she tells their mom then Ivan will be the one to get hurt. He and his mother will be kicked out and run off. Alicia will lose her job and Ivan won’t be able to finish college. Lucia will end up ruining his life. Lucia asks why her sister had to fall for [fijarse] him of all people! Cuz Lucia is in love with him! Mari says she understands, but Lucia’s still very young. She and he are older and at the age where you go steady. They just sort of happened to click and that’s the way it is. She has to promise not to tell Mama or their abuela–-not anybody--about the two of them. Lucia agrees but she’s done with Ivan for good!

Mari rolls her eyes and races back to Ivan’s room. “--I got her convinced to stay quiet.” Ivan says he’s been thinking and he wants to tell her dad about them. She tells him he’s crazy and reminds him it’s Mama who wears the pants in their family. Van is excited though and continues. He doesn’t understand why it would be a problem since he’s got good marks [promedio] and a scholarship [beca]. He is sure he’ll be able to be a good provider. Mari says, even so, that’s a way’s off and for now they’d do better just to keep things on the down-low like they are. Later on, if that comes to pass, they’ll discuss it again. The Vanster says he doesn’t feel comfortable sneaking around like this, tho’. They can't do it this way forever.  “--Ok. Fine. We’ll call it quits.” Mari walks to the door and starts to leave. Ivan shuts it before she can walk through it. “—I can’t live without you!” They kiss again and the passion runneth over: they do it in the park; they do it on his bedroom floor; they do it here and they do it there; they do it everywhere. Finally they get wise and do it in his bed, too.

One morning Carly tells Gerry and Lu-Screechia that they’ve been invited to a friend’s anniversary party. Screech is all for that, why the best families in the region will be invited. Gerry refuses to go. He’s not about to lend himself to the ruse that they’ve got a happy marriage, he says, and storms out of the room. “—What’s the matter with him? Always has to make my life difficult!” Carly snickers. “--That’s the pot calling the kettle black!” [‘The burro talking about ears’/ El burro hablando de orejas] Lu-Screechia tries talking Mama into going with her instead. Carly doesn’t care to sit for hours and listen to gossip, but since she agrees it’s been a dog’s age since they’ve been invited to a social event, she says fine.

Meanwhile, Alicia and Gerry have lunch together in the spare room over the garage. He tells her he’s planning to move back to the city and work again as an engineer in some construction company with his friends. He asks Ali to go with him. Her first thought is for her son, but Gerry reminds her that Ivan’s fully grown now and can get on by himself. Besides, she’s not the only one who would have to leave loved ones behind. There’s the matter of his two daughters. But then, there’s a construction company in town (Alamos?) where he could probably find work, also. Ali seems to think it’s a marvelous idea, either way. She gets up from the table and suddenly feels sick. She blames it on something she ate. He can’t stand the thought of her being sick, he says, and then professes his great love for her once more.

A bit later while clearing away Carly’s dishes, Ali asks for a few days vacation. She’s never had any time off and explains that she promised to attend some holiday affair with her co-madre, Celia, and she’ll be away three or four days. Carly says it’s a good idea to take some time for herself. Ali says thanks and she’ll leave first thing in the morning. Not to worry. Carly will inform her daughter about it. Ali looks unsteady on her feet.

After lunch Carly and Lucia have a nifty little chat about love and marriage. “--Mom and Dad are still fighting?” Yep, says Carly. Lucia tells her that she always thought that when people were in love and got married that love would last a lifetime. Carly opines that sometimes it does, but most times it does not. Well, in true novella heroin form, she says she will only marry for love and will love her man her whole life long.

Across the way, Ali and Gerry get together again so she can tell him she’s taking a few days off and will be away with Celia. He says it sounds great. She asks if he’s gotten that job yet. No, the man hasn’t made up his mind. Gerry’s thinking of starting his own business in the meantime, contracting for repair work in town, tho’ he knows his wife will scream to high heaven when she and her friends find out. Ali says so what? He has a right to do what makes him happy. He agrees.

Outside in back again, Mari is frantically looking for Ivan. She finds him studying there for a test. She’s practically in tears and says she needs his help, that perhaps his mother knows somebody. “--Somebody for what?”  "--I'm pregnant!" Ruh-roh! (Those must have been sugar-pills that American school nurse gave her. Or, maybe she decided to tune out when they were explaining how to use them.)  Van is “Come-again?” impactado. As the screen fades to dark, he appears to be imagining himself stuck at the crossing on the railroad tracks of life, having just heard the freight train’s whistle blow.

Thanks, Jardinera, for your excellent, as always, recap. Wow! This novela is moving along quickly. I can buy Laisha W. as a spoiled , horny older teen, but I just can't see DZ as a young, innocent, horny adolescent. Maybe if he had longer hair or something. He just looks too mature.Even the darkrimmed Clark Kent glasses can't hide his maturity for me. Well, now we know why DZ has those chapped lips....longterm kissing. Laisha is really going fir it. I hope Carlos is watching. About those birth control pills that the American school supposedly handed out like bags of chips, I think Mari was lying and stupid enough to think she just wouldn't get pregnant. As for Juan Slimy, we knew that we hadn't seen the last of him. What bout Alicia feeling dizzy, is she sick and dying or preggers ? Can't wait to see what happens next, plus I am impatiently waiting for Marcelo to show up.

Great recap Jardinera!! I'm glad you like "Shrew-crecia". She really is just dreadful. I just loved when you said you grimace just looking at the hag. She does have a permanent snarl.

"Panting and depantsing"- funny!

I completely missed the details of Leandro and Juan-Slimy's (excellent!) back-room bidnez. I knew it had to do with water (hmmm, a la STuD?) but that's about it. Thank heaven for your re-cap! So Shrew-crecia is not only an emasculating hag, she puts her faith in the wrong people.

Maripaz just makes me sick. SICK! I have no problem buying DZ as young and naive (I think I still have the younger actor in mind.) Maripaz is just playing him. Unfortunately, I'm afraid it will take a while for him to figure it out and he is going to end up quite hurt. Ugh! I just felt so bad for him every time he professed his love or devotion. I can't wait until he opens his eyes.

Ok. When Ali got dizzy and almost passed out I laughed out loud because the first thing that popped into my head was "she's got the Alonso virus!!"

P.S. LOVE the title, Jardinera !

Funny susanlynn, I was thinking the opposite. Even though we know DZ is I think around 36, he fits the joven pretty good, maybe it's the glasses.

Guess what is going to happen if you congress & congress & congress etc. w/o protection, embarazada, who knew?

Thank you Jardinera. I loved your title and everything that followed!

After viewing all the kissing in this episode, I almost felt like my lips were chapped at the end!

David Z is believable to me playing a, what, 19 year old? The glasses help, plus the clothes they have him wearing, plus the physical awkwardness he sometimes displays. Works for me.

I can't believe it. So far I can find nothing to criticize in this tn. Such a pleasant change from TDA.

Thank you Jardinera for putting oxygen into this recap for us! I am still trying to understand the relationships in this story. Love your comment on the writer's take on American education.
What is comadre exactly? Google translate says it is either "midwife" or "gossip".

Great recap Jardinera! Lol at Maripaz being every college guy's wet dream, too true. Poor Iván had no chance, especially since he has liked her for years.

I also like Zepeda as a young college guy. I think he has this sweet air to him that fits the character. He is a good mama's boy but going crazy over the girl of his dreams. If Maripaz were actually a good girl they'd remind me of that Brooke Shields movie, Endless Love. Poor guy.

Emarie: Comadre (co-mother, compadre (co-father) and compadres (co-parents) are the names called between the parents and godparents of a child after the respective Catholic ceremonies are celebrated(baptize, communion, confirmation), it is to establish the new relationship between them.

In México, the words comadre and compadre are also used as slang for "best friend" (like how bff is used in the US).

Jarocha

Great recap Jardinera. The first week of a new TN is always so fast paced with the introduction of all the major characters and plot lines. I am loving all the intrigue so far.

I am having a hard time buying Carlotta as Lucrecia's mother. The daughter looks older than the mom, but then it could be her sour disposition and permanent scowl. In this instance a shot or two or ten of Botox may help soften her looks.

DZ as a young innocent is a stretch, but I'll go with it. I just remember him as the evil douche in Sortilegio.

With LfdD I am now up to 3 telenovelas, thank god for DVR. LOL

@ Emarie a comadre or compadre are the godparents when a child is baptized. Also the sponsors for a wedding or quinceñera are typically referred to as compadres.

Rubycantu, I'm having the same problem. I can't find a date of birth online for Rosa Maria Bianchi, but she has to be older than Delia Casanova.

She would need more than Botox by now. I don't look remotely as old as she does and I can tell you from personal experience that wrinkles that deep need more than Botox. That is why so many 20-somethings who can afford it are now getting Botox as prevention.

AS I am half German I am ashamed of myself for not first thinking of "Juan Jeil-Me". That was brilliant.

I must be a pretty gullible sap. I buy almost anything they give me in a TN. (We'll leave TdA out of this on lol.)

I hadn't even thought of Shrew-crecia looking older than Carly. I just accepted that relation.

I went back last night and re-watched the Leandro/Juan Slimy water bidnez scene. What's the name of the Curiel rancho?

Mornin' all. Thanks for the encouraging comments. I also like the majority of characters so far. Jarocha was right that the beginning captures your interest and keeps it. I hope any weaknesses after are very short-lived.
======
Susanlynn: I thought I'd have a hard time with DZ as a teen but his mannerisms, along with the youthful dress, help throw a blurring gauze of youthfulness that is believable for all practical purposes to me. LW has lost so much weight that she looks like a walking stick in high-heels and bike shorts while going up that cliffside street the other night. Without her makeup she also looks believably younger to me. Again, her mannerisms are not overdone (like many of the other directors demand) and so, to this point, the beanie's been laying on the couch.
==========
Sara: I admit to having to rewind the backroom deal discussion numerous times to make sure! If I didn't catch all I hope Jarocha will clarify! LOL!
===========
Sondie/Susanlynn: "After viewing all the kissing in this episode, I almost felt like my lips were chapped at the end!" "Well, now we know why DZ has those chapped lips." I am certain there was a run on Chapstick during rehearsals! ;>)

Urban: Plastic surgery of some sort?
I've never understood how women get such deep wrinkling unless they're always in the sun tanning.

Thanks so much Jardinera. Great title and fantastic recap. Wow, Ivan and Maripaz (a way too innocent name for her) were going at it like bunnies in heat. No college age guy could resist the girl of his dreams laying herself out on a silver platter like that. I think that Alicia is also preggers and headed out of town for an abortion. Things are about to explode.

I am totally buying DZ as a horny young man. Soon enough we'll have the jump forward in time and he'll be acting closer to his real age. But I don't mind this time in between to establish the the attraction between him and Maripaz/Laisha.

Poor Luci. She is always going to be "too young." Well, at least until the time jump forward. The intros make it look like there are quite a few competitors for her heart once she turns into Sandra E.

Jardinera~~Maybe the wrinkles are from a combination of Sun worship and smoking. I am thinking of my cousin Kathy who smoked and tanned, and even though she is only 2 years older than I am, she looks much older. Maybe Lucrezia was sitting out in the sun smoking in her youth. I'm watching the actress in Alborada [which was made 6 years ago], and she looks better...not a beauty...but not as wrinkled.

Thank you Jardinera. Okay call me naive, but I kind of thought that Maripaz was all talk about the men she had been to bed with and that Ivan would be her first. Well looks like I was wrong. Ivan just didn't stand a chance with Maripaz the Octopus all over him. What about the black crow on the car roof when they were smooching. Bad omen.

If Alicia said to Celia that Gerardo was taking care of 'protection', doesn't she know?? Well, she had a dizzy spell, sure sign of pregnancy in these novelas, and she did ask for a few days off. Not looking good.

I must say I think DZ is doing a real good job in this role. He is very believable as a teenage Ivan in my opinion. I am impressed. I loved his villian portrayal in Sortilegio as well.

As to Maripaz, what is up with the hiking in shorts, a tank, and HEELS. My feet hurt just watching that scene. It reminded me of watching a lady try to walk the very steep steets of Quebec in heels last summer. QTH ? ~~~Susanlynn, typing in flipflops

Susalynn: It seems everybody wants to walk in heels all day nowadays. When I was in DC this summer most of my classmates had on those huge heels during the whole day and the campus had lots of little hills and stairs, not to mention that they would go out with them too. I tried going out in heels one afternoon (not as high though, only 3 inches) and I had to buy a pair of sandals at the mall because my feet were hurting so bad after a few hours of walking.

Just for interests sake, what decade is this supposed to be. I have noticed that there are no cell phones. The clothes they are wearing are not indicating anything to me.

Margaret

I have to laugh at Shrew-crezia (luv that name) thinking she is so smart in business, and her husband so incompotent, yet her ranch manager is doing side deals with Juan Jeil-Me (good one Jardinera)on the side without her knowing.

Margaret

I think we are supposed to be 10-11 years in the past. No cell phones make sense for a small town in Mexico. Maybe a rich family would have one but the Lomelí's are struggling economically and back then a cellphone was more of a luxury given that very few people had them as they were expensive and many didn't like them anyway. It's weird, I think I was 13 when my dad bought our first cell phone(a used one from Mexico City) and just a couple of his friends had one but by the time I was 17 (and had inherited my dad's second cellphone) several kids in my school had their own. The use of that kind of technology exploded very quickly this past decade.

Jarocha

Hmm. Interesting, Margaret. I hadn't even thought of time-setting.

Wasn't there a lack of cell phones in STuD? Could it be a matter of "we're out in the country on a rancho?

Jardinera-I had the same thought about LW during the heels and shorts scence. She has some very skinny legs.

Vivi- I was wondering if Ali was sneaking off for an abortion, too. She seemed a little sketchy when asking for time off. I get the impression from the opening credits that Ali eventually passes away. Could this be pretty soon?

I'm also beginning to question my initial thoughts about Maripaz. Is she manipulative, on a power trip and evil to the core (my first reaction) or just a capricious young girl playing games and driven by hormones?

She seemed to find the idea of being married to Ivan ridiculous. In the flash forward in the first episode, she said she didn't even want to have the baby. So obviously her motives aren't to try and somehow "trap" Ivan (as is usually the case in a TN.)

UA, I would love to hear your thoughts on Maripaz's motives.

I'm still trying to figure out how she's on the pill and pregnant. Granted they are not 100% effective, but still.

We must have been commenting at the same time Jarocha. Thanks for the cell-phone clarification.

I kind of forget that we are still in the "flashback/background story" portion of the TN. I guess Ivan still needs to go to the US, finish his studies and come back to Sonora before we are back to "now" lol.

Could anyone clarify if El Socorro is the name of the Curiel rancho or of the Mondragon rancho? Thanks.

Thanks for the welcome, I've been lurking for a while now.

@ Urban Anthr. I also couldn't find Bianchi's DOB but she has a son born in 83, I would put her in her 50's. Delia Casanova who plays her mom is 62 and looks good for her age. I was a long time viewer of The Young and the Restless and got used to the SORAS (Soap Opera Rapid Age Syndrome).

I was looking for info and found this Mitofsky poll from 2004:

http://www.estadistica.mat.uson.mx/Actdesc/estaddeinf.pdf

According to it, back then 43% of men and 29% of women used a cellphone in Mexico already, 42.6% of high school graduates had a cell phone and 71.4% of College graduates owned one too. Of people living in urban areas 41.3% of them had cell phones and for rural areas only 18.6% of them did. Interesting.

Sara~~~I think it's a combination. Maripaz seems to be manipulative, evil to the core, AND driven by hormones. That's a bad combination. I wonder what is going to happen to the baby. Will she have a miscarriage, an abortion , or a birth of the unwanted baby ? Jarocha~~~You were probably wise to take off those heels. The woman I worked with used to wear high heels every day to work , and she ended up having to have surgery on both feet. With a size 5 fiit, I have a very small base in a heel, so I don't wear them often....mostly when I'll be sitting down most of the time. I've seen women take some nasty falls wearing those really high heels. Yikes.

Jardinera, thanks for the weekend recap.

I am not sure about this TN, there sure are a lot of good, bad and very, very ugly people involved. After Burnie in TdA, I am not sure if I can take much more evil this summer.

FYI: Shrew-crecia is Dr. Sofia Capellan in Mujeres Asesinas.

The conversation about Botox and wrinkles is LOL. Everyone knows that skinny women get more wrinkles as they age and the Traditionally Built Woman (over weight)has plenty of fat cells (natural Botox) to keep the wrinkles away - they always have beautiful smooth skin as they age. This is just my opinion and of course my friends. It always justifies dessert.

Rosemary

Susanlynn--ITA that heels should only be worn if one plans on doing a lot of sitting. I am on my feet all day and I don't see how my colleagues wear heels all day while teaching.

As for Maripaz, I also wonder if she is doing it just to stick it to little Lucia. Sibling rivalry and all. I guess I'm swinging back to the idea that she is just evil and mean....like her mamma. How did Shrew-crecia end up like she did. Was Carly a shrew in her younger days?

Jarocha- Very interesting stats. If I weren't the laziest person on earth right now I might look up equivalent stats for the US (Actually, I didn't try to find something, but my research skills are lacking.)

Jardinera-you have confirmed what I thought I heard: El Socorro. But I'm not sure either if that was the Curiel or Mondragon homestead name.

Sara: I think Maripaz is simply a horny spoiled brat at this point. She seemed into Iván when she first saw him, before she knew about his deep friendship with Lucía and she became more interested when she found out he posed a challenge to the girls that were interested in him. She admited to Judith that she liked him more than she thought she would. This pregnancy might change many things though. I tend to think that, had she not gotten pregnant, they probably would have continued their relationship until Iván's eyes would open to Maripaz's superfluous personality.

Jarocha

Thanks Jardinera for the websites, muy bien!

I thought I recognized one of the servants, Gloria (Maria Prado), Aurora's evil caretaker,
(Dominga) in MEPS.

Thank you, Jardinera, for the terrific recap.

I'm not quite sure about this one yet. Like susanlynn, I am having a hard time seeing DZ playing someone half his age. I thought Mauricio Ochmann pulled this off much better in El Clon, for example.

As for the dynamics between Maripaz and Iván, it seems like a simple sex role reversal. She's doing what we've seen the spoiled rich boy do a million times before -- seducing the naive but toothsome child of the servant, just for fun. I suppose she'll define her character by what she does about the pregnancy.

Vivi, I also think Alicia is pregnant and it looks like she's planning an abortion.

About Maripaz's pregnancy: It's actually not rare for a young woman to become pregnant while taking birth control pills. When taken perfectly, they are 99+% effective. But under typical conditions (occasional missed pill etc), the pregnancy rate is between 5 and 9 percent.

You are right Jarocha about cell phone usage and the time period. I also remember during the mid to late 90's very few people owned one. It was definately thought of as a luxury.

I also think that Maripaz at this time is just a spoiled selfish brat, even maybe a bit insecure in her need to have the one up on her friends and peers. I kind of feel sorry for her, because her smarty pants attitude has got her into trouble.

Margaret

Variopinta~~~Yes, the housekeeper was Aurora's caretaker/keeper? in MEPS. She's been in a lot of tns as either a servant, an inmate, or a poor friend. I've seen her play goodies and baddies. In Destilando Amor, she was Gaviltaaaaa's mother's pal in the hood. In Heridas de Amor, she played the goodhearted servant who fell down a fight of stairs to her death when terrorized by Evil Bertha's rottweiler. I think I once saw hwe as a scary prison inmate.

Thank you Jarocha and NovelaMaven. Very good assessments of Maripaz. "Horny, spoiled brat" was especially funny.

I'm pretty sure we can assume that Maripaz is NOT taking her pills as she should be and hence fell into the 5 to 9 percent.

Her "I don't need college. I am superior to my friends" attitude just says it all to me. She is just a little Shrew-crecia in training...except obviously less frigid.

Maripaz gave her pack of pills to Judith, remember? She told Judith not to tell anyone she got them from her.
So I'm thinking those were her last pack, since she got them in the States at school. She seems the type to not go through the effort to get more back home. Considering she can't drive, doesn't have a car, and lives out at a ranch

She was also in Studs as Griselda, in 4 episodes. I don't remember that character.

If she had just held those pills between her knees she wouldn't be in this predicament.

I remember Mari showing the pills to Judith but I guess I don't remember her handing them off for keeps. It wouldn't do her friend any good unless taken on a continual basis. Judith said she wouldn't think of going to bed with a guy. It's a different mentality than Mari's and always has been. She and Mari both would have to manage a way to get to a doctor who would be liberal enough to prescribe them, and then to get to a drug store that would sell them without word getting back to their parents. Sounds like that would be impossible in a small Mexican town--or at least, in that one.

Margaret:

I can see how we might think Mari is insecure and acting out to overcompensate--with disastrous consequences for all involved. I can also envision her being overconfident and selfish, again with disastrous results for those she becomes closely involved with. I tend toward option number two, especially if she really didn't want the baby she's engendered. IMO I doubt she'll care what happens to Ivan and his mother for long, let alone the ripple effect with the family and those who work for the family in that small town since it seems employees' reputations quickly become intertwined with the employer's family in these tn's.

Do you even need a prescription for the "pill" in Mexico? You can purchase all sorts of RX over the counter at any little tienda in Mexico. After all, she had a sample so would know what to buy.

Rosemary

Rosemary: I believe you are right! I totally forgot that drugs are generally over the counter there! ; > ) Thanks for reminding me. That would be even more reason in a small town there for gossip about a girl I'd think. My only question then is why more/all of the youngsters aren't all taking the pill down there then? Maybe Jarocha can shed some light. Cultural mindset I suppose. Dunno.

Didn't someone mention in one of the TdA comment threads that Mexico had a pretty high birth rate among young people? Or am I crazy?

For clarification: out of wedlock birth rates.

Rosa María Bianchi (Lucrecia) is the esposa del Regidor in Alborada.

Found this about abortions and birth control in Mex:
Abortion is legal in Mexico only when the woman's life is in danger or in cases of rape or incest. States are allowed to regulate their abortion laws and some will allow an abortion when there are severe congenital defects. The state of Yucatan allows abortion for those women who are of poor economic status who already have 3 children. However there are no legal abortion practitioners in the state. Contraception is not a large problem in Mexico, birth control pills are available over the counter. Education is lacking, however, and this poses a problem in that people do not know how to use contraceptives properly, leading to unplanned pregnancies and abortions. Women who have and practitioners who perform illegal abortions are subject to between 6 months and 5 years in jail.Despite the restrictive laws in Mexico abortion is widely practiced. Each year 500,000 to 1,500,000 illegal abortions are induced. 150,000 of those women are then treated at local hospitals for complications resulting from back alley abortions. Illegal abortions are the 4rd highest cause of maternal mortality in Mexico.

Thanks Vivi!

What could this mean for Ali?

But abortion "on demand" in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy IS legal in Mexico City.

Maybe Alicia is headed towards México City!

Or is she going to be a "backalley" casualty?

I'm the one who mentioned the high out-of-wedlock birth rate. Adal Ramones talked about it at the top of episode 2 of Los Reyes de la Pista. No exact number was quoted but that Mexico was the leader.

If Maripaz is actually pregnant and not faking it, I'd say she's doing this to avoid going back to school.

Dear Jardinera,

Great recap. You've captured the telenovela-style-silliness of some of the episode without deflating our high hopes for a quality novela. I watched the four first episodes today and looked forward to each on. I hope that the relatively good times continue.

Age-appropriate looks aside, I find myself rooting both for Ivan and Lucia, always a promising way for me to start.

Maripaz is shallowness itself, her mother's daughter. Still, I was surprised that she was as attracted to Ivan as she has been. If figured that she would get bored with the game sooner.

That cute little puppy grew up to be a big Doberman? Why do I think there's some foreshadowing or at least a metaphor going here?

Great to see so many familiar faces back after TdA. I was away last week and tried to watch FdD on line, but Univision has claimed copyright infringement on YouTube sites that are showing it!s First time I've encountered that.

Thank you UA! If Maripaz is wanting to get out of going to school by getting pregnant, why would she ask Ivan if his mom "maybe knew someone?" Sounds like she's thinking abortion.

TravelingLady-I'm really rooting for Ivan and Luci, too. I never really felt that way about Max and Maria. It was more a feeling of wanting it OVER. lol.

Hey all my Caray buddies! looks like I'll have time to be with you on this one. I'm getting a late start and have to catch up but it looks like there are lots of hunky men so I hope that means lots of naked swimming! 8(:-P

Connie !!!! ~~~I've been wondering where you were ! Several times I've thought about asking if anyone has ''seen'' you. So glad you're back because I've missed your comments.

Dear J.

Thanks for tip for internet access. I can definitely use it.
