Alborada, 9/9/2011. Cap. 72.

Today's episode is covered in Melinama's Recap #27, Friday segment, at this link.

On YouTube, haguilar78's clips for Cap 72 start at this link.

Thank you, Carlos, for today's picture. I suspect Carlos won't have too many more opportunities to post screenshots of Gasca.

Why is the Inquisition jail using government guards? The church was always so careful to keep itself seperate from the authority of the State (remember Becket?), so I'm thinking they wouldn't use State guards.

OTOH, the Spanish Inquisition was under the authority of the Spanish crown, NOT the auth. of the pope, in contrast to the Roman and Medieval Inquisitions. So maybe Alborada is right, and the Spanish lands DID use government guards.

Thanks Paula and Carlos for our daily dose of links and pictures. Gasca seems so grateful for the second gift from Modesta. I know his outocme is different but he sure doesn't seem to doubt the friendliness of gifts from the palacio. Kind of a mean tease at the very least.

I would be very surprised if Carla Estrada and company got any details wrong about the historical accuracy of the guards. It seems only te US was concerned with separation of church and state until Mexico gainied it's independence from Spain and France and the great Zapotec president Benito Juarez limited the church's powers in Mexican law.

Sorry for the sticky 'h' key on my laptop. Perhapps too many sticky fingers from eating cookies and fruti have adulterated my laptop. The other typos are gremlins under my keyboard...

Interesting discussion on the inquisition and separation (or not) of church and state.

As wretched as Gasca was, I did not enjoy seeing him tortured. Those were horrible scenes.

Interesting. Gasca has killed several victims, tried to kill others, and caused to be killed others (e.g. Ramón's first partner). But which one seals his doom? Victoria's husband. That's interesting on two counts.

1. I believe all his other deeds were at the request of Diego or Juana, while he killed Vicki's husband totally by his own choice. It seems just that he'd be nailed on that one.

2. The other murders would fall under the authority of the State, and as we saw, he could've weasled out of that - the govt. corruption was so great that he literally could get away with murder.

But the murder of Vicky's husband fell under the authority of the church. Diego's influence was useless - Fra Alvaro blew off the commandant's complaint, "Gasca works for the count!" The state was powerless against the church - The commandant said there was nothing he could do. And even corruption wouldn't work - Commandant said there was no way he could get Gasca out, no matter how much money Diego put into the effort.

Lesson learned: if you have enough power, you can avoid Big Brother Govt. But don't dare mess with Mother Church.

Don't forget, Victoria's husband was brother to one of higher church men , I think an inquisitor.

How about the Bud Light commercial?

Thanks, Paula and Carlos. Marcos had some interesting comversations today with Tia, then Felipe, and finally Andres. Marcos is such a goodhearted guy , and I enjoy watching his loving relationship with Felipe and Carmen . I am not able to get here as much as I would like now. In addition to teaching 3 classes on Mondays and Wednesdays, Hub and I watch our 2 granddaughters [a 4-year-old and a 1-year-old] at their house 5 days a week. We get up at 5, drive the 6 miles to their place, and leave for home about 4.30 when our daughter and son-in-law get home from work . I am exhausted. Then, our son-in-law's sister was operated on ysterday for a brain tumor , so hub and I watched the baby from 6 am to 8 pm so that they could drive to Phily to be there for her. I'm happy to get a little respite from my RL telenovela by reading your comments here and seeing Carlos's photo for the day. Thanks for the diversion. I was able to watch Friday's episode this morning. My fantasy included crawling into that big bed with the Bandaged Luis and....sleeping. Well, back to the laundry and test papers.

Susanlynn, you are leading a heroic life of teaching and caring for children and family but you need to sleep more because your fantasy life needs energy!

I also liked Marcos' very fine day. What a galan, so thoughtful and loving for a man who has little or no family. Marina should take a second opinion. And if she were to ask me, I would have to beg her to dump the timid Andres for the more enthusiastic Marcos. If Andres' melancholic nature sours, he has the makings to be Papa's boy. eeuuuww!

Carlos, you captured quite a screen shot. It speaks volumes and that is all I will say about the matter.

I just watched this episode. It contains several very interesting themes. I very much enjoyed everyone's comments about the level of power that both the church and state wield. Fascinating point about Gasca being tried for the murder that he instigated himself as opposed to those instigated by Diego and Juana. They should be worried; it is only a matter of time before he rats them out.

Sara and Victoria are shrewd judges of character. They couldn't have picked a better husband candidate for Marina than Marcos. Heck, if you can't get the one you love you might as well get the #1 catch in the city.

Judging by the previews for today I have hopes that Andres will NOT be a Papa's boy.

Susanlynn, you are superwoman! It sounds like you are starring in your own telenovela. What do we call it? La Bella Más Cansada? Treinta Horas Por Día?
