La Pola - September 2, 2011 - Heads Begin to Roll, Discussion Page

Vivianito cannot watch Alejo being executed so he runs away. When he hears shots being fired, he assumes that Alejo is dead. The Mother Superior and María Ignacia have had some success with Sámano who tells them he will spare the lives of the men. But, he knows that the order has already been given, and when he hears shots, he assumes that all have been shot dead, so he orders a halt to the executions. Alejo was in the second group and had not been shot. He is returned to prison. Gaspar, Eusebia and María Ignacia meet with him, and he is eternally grateful for their help. María Ignacia promises to bring him food every day. He remains a patriot.

Pola and Vivianito meet. He tells her that Alejo has been executed. Her grief is immediate and profound. She still believes in the cause of freedom – even when she witnesses the hanging of Carbonel who is the first to fall at the hands of Gen. Morillo. Morillo will hang the traitors so that not a single Spanish bullet will be wasted on them. Torres, Jorge Tadeo, Pei and Sabio Caldas know they are next, but they still hold out hope that they will be spared and use their wives to beg for their lives. Morillo is not impressed. If anything, he is annoyed and more determined than ever to rid the country of these dissidents. Torres and Sabio Caldas are the next to be taken prisoner. Pei tries to escape from the city by hiding in a cart carrying flour. He is caught.

Arcos decides to take the offer made by Sámano to save his life by rejoining the ranks. Alejo still holds out.

Que tristeza. I really felt Pola's grief and pain. the actress seemed really made for this role.

I can't say enough how beautifully made this novela is in all aspects.

Shallowgal: de acuerdo.

Thank you, Pasofino! Beautifully done!

Carbonell's hanging was even more tragic because of his final message to the people -- Give up the cause!

On the other hand, people like Baraya and Rodriguez have finally come to understand that Antonio Nariño was telling them the truth: the American cause could only be served by a united front. Their suicidal war among brothers has left the way open to monsters like Sámano and Morillo with no feeling for the land or its people.

I have not been following this TN much (I mostly watch Teresa), but I have some photos from the La Pola set in Villa de Leyva, Colombia from a trip in April. It looked like they were filming an execution scene. If anyone would like to see them, let me know.

Aleta: I'd like to see the photos - as would others of us who have been following this series. Do you have an email - or can you post them with a comment? I'm not too technologically proficient - but, I have noticed that Carlos posts photos on the Alborada page. How about it, Carlos?

Thanks again, Pasofino. Some very sad moments Fri. night.

I was especially sad to see Carbonel hanged. Despite his seemingly cowardly lapse and desertion earlier, I think that of all the revolutionaries (with , he had the purist most unselfish motives for his participation in the revolution. I think he wanted freedom for all... period.

As for him having been a coward, I don't think it's that simple. I think more accurately he was a realist. Both before the battle and before his death he recognized the hopelessness of continuing to fight and shedding blood needlessly.

I'm not sure which is more odious, Sámano or Morillo. Perhaps I give Sámano a slight edge since he cynically pardoned the condemned after hearing the shots from the firing squad, and then, on learning that some had actually been successfully pardoned, was going to go ahead and rescind the pardon.

My heart was breaking as Viviano thought that Alejo was executed and then even more so when he informed Pola.

Aleta and Pasofino,

Aleta, if you can Email the photos to me I can open a post with your photos and would be more than happy to do so.

Carlos: Thanks in advance if you post the photos. I don't know what Colombian history tells us about Carbonel, but, he has had a very interesting end. I wonder if we'll learn more about Nariño before this ends. He seems to have disappeared.

The photos are on the way to Carlos. Hope you enjoy!

I've got Aleta's photos and will post them around noontime.

Viviano watches Alejo lined up with Lopezito and a couple others, but he leaves upset before he can see that the execution was suspended.

Lopezito does not believe that they were spared. Alejo says he would rather believe it is true.
As long as they remain alive there is hope.

Morillo tells the bishop that the arguments and disputes between the local groups made his job easier. Says Samano is taking care of the resistance in the south. Morillo receives the wives club… but tells them he can’t listen to women who housed men who shot at his troops.

Samano is mad at Herrera since he thought all the men would be killed in one execution. Herrera says they did not all fit in the firing lineup. Herrera tells Samano the city was moved with his ‘generous act of mercy’. Also he remembers MI’s words, how do you want to be remembered? As a devil or as a man of God?’

The Valencias are dining with Alejo… he realizes they are the ones that saved his life, mainly MI.
He kisses her hand… he is very moved. She almost slips that she still loves him but changes her choice of words… She tells him that she has not taken her permanent vows yet. It is not about time, it is about conviction. And she has doubts. She dreamt so long with having a family… that she has not had the strength to resign to that. She still can be a good wife, a good mother. Alejo agrees.

Pola tells the rebels that Morillo left the ‘welcoming banquet’ waiting… AA arrives.
She tells him that the new royal rep, Pablo Morillo arrived today. The forecast is pretty dark…

Jorge Tadeo is very offended by Morillo leaving them with the party served. Jose Maria (JT’s brother the marquis) says that what is important is not the letdown, but what that means. That Morillo did not come to negotiate, he came for punishment. Pedro (MM’s husband) is also telling them not to expect much mercy from Morillo, he is a militant who came from humble origins so don’t expect much mercy from him for the wealthier folks.

Morillo reviews the records/facts about the ‘caballeros’, he will trash them all, none will escape.

AA tells Pola that the patriot troops were completely beaten. If they are not caught, they are wounded or dead. He does not know about Alejo, but if he finds out he will tell her right away. Pola says she knows that Alejo and Vivianito are well.

The Valencias tell Alejo they are moving to Santa Fe. Alejo does not want them to tell anything to his mother, don’t want to worry her. MI will visit and bring him food every day. HE thanks her.

Baraya says should escape… Jorge Tadeo still believes Morillo should be a man they can negotiate with. Frutos says he will try to escape. Pedro warns him that that will only raise Morillo’s rage. Jorge Tadeo insists Morillo can be negotiated with. Meanwhile Morillo is planning to execute anyone guilty of treason. Beginning with Carbonnel, who arranged for putting the viceroys in prison… he does not even deserve a single spanish bullet, he will be hung.

Carbonnel is arrested, Pola sees him… tells Candelaria who that is… Candelaria says we should have stayed in Guaduas..

Samano goes to the prisoners and tells them that he got orders to forgive the life of those rebels who show their repentance, they will have the chance to rejoin the royal troops.

Viviano arrives at Santa Fe. He tells her Alejo got executed. She is in disbelief, but finally believes it after he tells her he’s sure. She is really upset. Hugging Vivianito she remembers moments with Alejo…

P: I did not understand anything but I liked it! Who did you say wrote those verses?
A: Lope de Vega. It is Soneto 96, every time I read it I think of you.
P: Then my whole live is a soneto 96. Because when I get up, when I sleep, when I go and when I come.. when I breathe… even when I don’t breathe I think of you. IT was worth it… so much pain.. so much loneliness… so much rage… it was worth it because we are finally together, together to the death… (kisses)
(back to the present, she is crying devastated… leans on a tree and looks at his gold medal)
(kisses)
P: What is the matter?
A: Its just that very soon we will be married in the eyes of God… we can wait a little bit more, right?
P: of course we can wait… ay, but what I was feeling was so good!
A: Me too! That’s why we have to wait… and to respect you at this moment, the moment in which the desire to fuse ourselves as one is killing us… is my way to tell you how much I love you…
P: You are beautiful/wonderful, Alejo. Ay I hope that moment will come very soon.
A: It will come sooner than you can imagine.

Pola tells Sierva to go after Josecito, not to let what happened to her happen to her. She will bring Josecito to her…
AA comes over, they tell him that Pola’s man got executed. Pola tells him about the ‘quinta’ raffle.
AA tells her to take a few days to rest, she says no way, now more than ever she wants those miserables to pay.

Arcos tells Alejo that he will take Samano’s offer. We lost. This land is spanish again. They are defeated. Their flags fell. He can live with the shame… as long as life gives him a good woman.

Pola visits Carbonnel saying she is his wife. He tells her its all lost now. Pola tells him about Alejo’s death. He says no wonder you insists in the fight… He will tell the people not to resist anymore and obey the royalists because he does not want to spill more blood… Pola tries to convince him not to tell that to the town, they will follow what he says. But he wants to save his soul by saving some lives.

Arcos and a couple others take Samano’s offer. Arcos tells Alejo there is nothing else we can do.
Samano asks Alejo if he did not ask to be freed. Alejo says he told him already, prefer to be executed. Samano repeats that he had to offer because he feels responsible for his brother’s death in some way, but if Alejo is not interested, he can’t do anything. Alejo grabs the cell bars hard and is angry/upset.

Pola tries to recruit people to form a raid in town to prevent Carbonnel’s execution. But the towns people just leave. Candelaria and the son of the guy Pola worked for tell her its not the same times. We lost… Carbonnel yells what he said he would, for the town to obey the royal authority. Then gets hung. Pola is upset, yells at them ‘murderer dogs!!’ but Juliano hawls her away before she gets arrested.
Frutos tries to escape but gets caught.
Pola is sure Carbonnel was forced to say what he did. Maybe he agreed to say it so they would let his family keep his property.. She can’t believe everyone who fought for the patria is jumping to the ‘godos’ side just like that.

Alejo talks to Lopezito and Pedrito, he is convinced the best they can do is to join the royal troops.
A: Because from there they can continue fighting for the patria… From there they can have access to all the information, to the weapons… they will be in between them like a pest.
Pedr: What is true is that we will be able to do much more from there than here locked in.
Lopez: But what can we do just us? Alone?
A: Alone? There are many more out there who want to keep on fighting. For each one killed by Samano there are 100 others fighting for the patria still.
Lopez: I think you are right. But I don’t know if I would be able to wear the chapeton uniform again.
Pedr: I would. Because even If I wear that uniform my heart will continue being a patriot.
Alejo nods in agreement.

With a pained heart, Pola continues trying to recruit royal soldiers to switch over to the patriot forces. She invites them over to Candelaria’s chicheria. She cries, tells Viviano that each time she sees an uniform she remembers Alejo. She explains to Vivianito that many of those soldiers were forced to join the royal troops but they just need to be convinced to switch sides. Viviano tells her that if she is discovered, the one that will die is her. She does not believe they are evil enough to kill a woman.

Camilo Torres and Sabio Caldas are brought to Samano. He mocks them for trying to escape by going to Popayan and even though they beg to be tried there in Popayan, Samano says ‘good try’ and tells them he got direct orders from Morillo (whines about Morillo being higher rank of course) to send them to Santa Fe to be tried there.

Baraya is tried by Morillo. Baraya finally admits that he made a huge mistake when he turned his back on and fought against Antonio Narino.

Camilo Torres does not have much luck with Don Pablo Morillo even thought he ennumerates that he was against Antonio Narino and against Jose Maria Carbonnel and always tried to make everyone else continue to recognize the authority of the King. HE will be executed. Even when his lawyer offers to Morillo his weight in gold, Morillo won’t bulge.
