La Pola - September 9, 2011 - Discussion Page

The patriots find themselves at a standstill. Gen. Santander won’t come to Santa Fé to help liberate the Almeida brothers without arms, ammunition and information. Arcos is now Sámano’s escribano and is completely shocked when he hears Sámano say that the Almeida brothers will be shot within a week after a military court-martial. Pola had tried to recruit Arcos, but he was still angry at her for rebuffing and insulting him. With a little friendly persuasion, he decides to meet with her.

Eusebia and Gaspar find out that Pola is the Policarpa of patriot fame. She admits to them that she was the woman to whom Alejo Sabaraín was engaged. They want no part of her. They demand that their donation be returned to them. They will remain sympathetic to the patriot cause, but they blame Pola for all the misery brought upon María Ignacia and their family because of her relationship with Alejo.

Speaking of whom, he admits to María Ignacia that his emotions are in conflict. She doubts everything he says and even follows him to the chicharía where she sees him talking to Pola. She becomes furious and verbally attacks him. This is just déjà vu – use your imagination and memory. The wedding is on, the wedding is off. How will anybody ever marry me after this?

Pola and Juliano meet Arcos and Lopezito in the woods. They were followed and discovered. Arcos tells Pola that the Almeida brothers are to be tried within the week. He also agrees to provide her with any information she wants. Then, the troops who followed them open fire. Juliano is shot. Pola orders Arcos and Lopezito to go since she is more likely to be able to find a hiding place, and, she wants to help Juliano. Pola believes in the standard operating procedure of that day – that women are not executed

Members of the royal judiciary asked Sámano about a trial date for the Almeida brothers. He tells them that they will have a military court martial. They tell Sámano that this would not be what the new viceroy would do. Sámano doesn't care. Apparently the new viceroy can't get to Santa Fé because Sámano won't provide him with a military escort to insure his safety.

Hola Pasofino. havent seen this yet, and can hardly wait. in san diego for the weekend to celebrate Grito de independencia with Luis Miguel concert. wont probably get to it til monday night or tues.

Shallowgal: Good to hear from you. Sounds like fund.

I have to add here also that Cata and Bernarda found Joaquín. Another piece of the puzzle is commplete.

Highlight: Jorge Tadeo taking it as a man, for once. Refusing the blindfold and his reaction to seeing the daughters was moving.

Low point: Alejo, man, how stupid can you be? Giving Maria Ignacia Policarpa's name--and not just once--why not just give her up to the authorities yourself!?!

Ambrosio hears from a guard that they will not do royal council to try them, they will be tried via military law (in other words, Samano already condemned them)

Alejo brings Pola to where Arellano was, Arellano excuses himself.
Alejo asks Pola why she is so mad at him. He has only tried to help out, but she is mad at him and has done nothing but brag about the Almeida brothers virtues and he wants to know why. She says you can do with your life whatever you want, and that the situation is not encouraging to be planning weddings. HE says ah! That’s it! He had not told her because he thought she did not care about him anymore. But seeing her jealousy, he realizes she does.
P: You are a bit cruel, no? (he is taken aback by that response) how do you want me not to feel jealous? You think I am wooden? What do you think I felt when I saw you together?
A: Where did you see us together?
P: On the street! Or are you hiding away? I knew it was her because she was with Acacia. Congratulations. Very pretty. Very ellegant. Much better than I. (he looks down quietly) But I can’t believe you switched her for me so quickly.
A: Just like you did to me Pola.
P: What? You are going to marry the Tarambana to get back at me?
A: How can you think that? Of course not…
P: You used to say you could not stand her.
A: MI now is a woman much more… more woman!
P: Ah! Now you feel bad for her!...
A; you know something? Its no longer your problem. Or am I asking you what you feel for don Ambrosio Almeida? (she looks away flustered) It is not necessary for you to answer, If you kissed him there is no need.
P: I repeat to you that I thought you were dead.
A: Does that mean you don’t feel anything for him? (she again sighs and turns around) Your silence speaks volumes. You do feel for him. That is why you will do whatever it takes to get him out of jail.
P: Wait one moment. Let it be clear that what I am doing for the Almeidas has nothing to do with my feelings, Alejo. If we need them outside, because otherwise it will be impossible to confront the godos.
A: I know they are imprescindible! And that I am an idiot!! Not good enough to even buy some guns! (she sighs again) You should listen to them and get me out (of the group), Pola.
P: NO, don’t say that Alejo, I need you beside me!
A: What do you need me for? What do you need me for? (he is about to walk away in a huff)
P: You remember why I started with this fight? Do you remember? So one could marry whoever you wanted without regard to the color of their skin or the surnames! And you remind me that I want to do that!.. even if it won’t be with you! (she walks away upset)

Gaspar and Don Pedro talk about how the Almeida’s will be judged. They expect that the royal audience will do it. But Pedro says Samano has not told them anything yet.
MM thanks them for their contribution to the patriot cause. Policarpa will get it to the rebels. Pedro assures them every cent will be invested in the patriot cause.
Pola arrives. They don’t recognize her, but she is not willing to receive the money without letting them know who she is so she tells them she is the woman Alejo was engaged to until recently. Gaspar and Eusebia change their mind and ask for the money back. MM and Pedro both assure them of Pola’s decency and mission and say the patriots need the money, but the Valencias will not bulge. Once they leave Pola tells MM and Pedro don’t worry. But thank you for the effort.

Lopezito comes to see Arcos, brings greetings from his old friends Alejo, Arellano, Pola… and tries to convince him to get the information Pola and the patriots need. Arcos is very reluctant since he does not want to put his family in danger.

At the Valencias Gaspar is having second thoughts about not having helped Pola. MI comes in and Eusebia says they need to tell her about their meeting with Pola. Gaspar was reluctant to tell MI. MI is curious to get details… Eusebia tells MI that Pola is working with the rebel cause. They lie to her and say their running into Pola was pure coincidence. MI wants to report Pola to the authorities, but Gaspar stops her. They are not cooperating with the rebels but they are not against them either. MI is for the king… Eusebia says we will not risk our lives but we can’t deny that Samano stole everything from us. Gaspar says we plan to return to Popayan now that Samano is here. MI says you will go after I get married to Alejo. Eusebia asks MI if Alejo knows Pola is here, MI says of course not, otherwise he would have told me.

Pedrito sees the Almeida brothers again and tells them that Pola met with Santander. They will be able to rescue them soon. Ambrosio tells Pedrito to tell Pola to worry more about the relationship with the people of the plains. Pedrito tells them that Samano will judge them via war council, not royal council.

MI and Alejo are walking around the city again, MI asks Alejo where he was. He lies and skips telling her anything about the rebel work. MI suggests he talk to her dad to get him a job via his contacts. Alejo says he wants to show he can make it without don Gaspar’s help. MI asks Alejo if he has been intimate with any woman. HE says no. She is glad they will go through their first experience together. He excuses himself but she asks if he will see la Pola. He is surprised she asks that. She says her parents saw her. He insists he has not seen her and that between him and Pola there is nothing anymore.

Catarina and Bernarda keep on looking for Joaquin. They are almost done with the mines and no luck yet. They are about to turn around, but a thunder calls Catarina’s attention to a certain area.

Alejo goes toward the chicheria… MI and Acacia are following far behind… Alejo meets with Arcos… Arcos thinks the meeting is with Lopez but Alejo signals for Pola to come out. When he realizes the deception, Arcos wants to walk out, but Alejo pulls him back saying to just listen to Pola, Arcos claims Pola deceived him, but Alejo says she is here to ask for his help and if anyone needs to appologize is Arcos to him for having failed him as a friend… but asks Arcos to not think it is Pola, but someone fighting for the same thing they risked their lives so many times for. Arcos asks if he reconciled with Pola. But Alejo says Pola now is with AA and he will marry MIV soon.
Arcos says he has not forgotten, but their cause is lost and he is now a royal soldier. Alejo raises his tone and says ‘do you think I would have arranged a meeting between you two if I did not think it is THAT important?’

MI and Acacia walk into the chicheria too… stay away watching… Acacia insists that Pola was very good to her and she does not want to harm her.

Pola asks Arcos to see if he can get info about the royal troops, soldier counts, locations, weapons, plans. She tells him about Santander willing to help take over SF again, but for getting his help they need the information from him. If they don’t get the info soon, it will be too late for the Almeidas. Pola begs Arcos but he says no…

Alejo finds out from the other soldier that was with Arcos that the Almeidas are being detained at the Rosario station. The guy says he knows because the A brothers and Pola asked him to join the patriots but he was afraid… joining them is practically a suicide.

Alejo rejoins Pola and she says they will have to get the information elsewhere.
Acacia points to Pola to MI. yes that is her.

Catarina run into a slave owner and some kids… they ask him if he would let them look… Catarina says this one has a smeared mark in his back. If they find him they will pay him for the kid…

Pedro is seeing Samano. Samano lets him know that the Almeida will be judged by military council. Samano asks Toirra for supporting his decision. Pedro warns that he will complain to the viceroy. The Viceroy Montalbo. Samano says that guy is in Santa Marta taking in some sun. Pedro states that he is not here because he has not received the security suppport to make his way to SF. Samano says whatever! He is not here and I am in command here for now. When Pedro leaves, Samano hurries Toirra (2nd in command) to get those men tried and executed asap.

Arcos has been listening to this and is frozen. Samano walks over to him and asks if he wrote down all that. Arcos says I did… no there is no problem, but when Samano walks away Arcos looks white of fear…

MI follows Alejo when he comes out of the chicheria… She yells at him not to lie to her again. She knows he has been seeing Pola, just saw them at the chicheria. So he can stay with Pola and forget about her. She walks away but since he stays there standing quiet, she comes back and asks him if he has something to say. He says he is seeing Pola but only about working together. He is honest with her and says he is fighting for the patriot cause. He says he did not want to involve her in it. She confronts him saying she will be his wife. HE asks How can she stand by watching so much horror around her? He says it is better to die with honor than to live serving people with no pity for anyone. MI asks what does Pola have to do with it. Did he let Pola come back to him? He says it was the opposite, he asked Pola to let him join them. He tells her Policarpa is one of the rebel leaders. MI questions the new name Policarpa. MI asks if he is still in love with Pola. Alejo won’t answer, just looks away, so she repeats the question. Alejo says Pola is now in a relationship with another man.
MI: Was it for that that you asked me to marry you? Because you were mad that she was with another man?
A: Listen to me. My feelings are jumbled right now. I was glad to find you again. To see that you have changed, that you are now a woman that any man would be glad to form a family with! But it is true, I decided to marry you once I realized Pola had turned to another man.
MI: And you tell me just like that?
A: MI, I don’t want to lie to you anymore, you are the only one I have always counted on.
MI: What does that mean? Are you breaking up with me?
A: I don’t understand that you still want to marry me after the confession I just made to you!
MI: Alejo, for God’s sake! I am not dumb! I knew you could not forget her just like that. But you asked me to marry you for something, no? Or are you going to pursue her again?
A: I told you that her love is not mine anymore.
MI: Did you join their cause to be near her?
A: NO, if I am with them is because I want to fight for that cause.
MI: You have every right to fight with who you want. As your wife, it is my duty to respect and support you. Who knows, maybe tomorrow you will rationalize it and will be again a royal follower.
A: MI, that will not happen. I would give my life for this cause.
MI: Lets not talk about that now, ok? We have all our lives to talk about it.
A: Listen to me. I think it is best that you and I..
MI: Alejo! I don’t care if you are still in love with her! I can make you happy. I can get her out of your heart.
A: MI, you are the most generous person I have ever known. But I don’t see myself…
MI: Alejo! Are you backing up on me again?? Alejo, I did not go after you! I was in peace, you came after me!! You made me… (he lifts his hand) You stained my honor! You think there will be anyone willing to marry me like this? Are you going back on your word??
A: No, of course not. (with a facial expression of getting sick at saying it)

At Andreas, Pola is meeting with Juliano, Lopezito, Vivianito… Pola asks Lopezito if there is anyone else that can give them the information. Lopezito says it is hard to feel safe anymore, after the Almeida brothers were caught, anyone can betray me…
Rodriguez comes in… Pola is glad to see him. He found out about the Almeidas. Pola tells him about her meeting with Santander and his requirements in order to help them get the Almeidas out.

Catarina and Bernarda finally find Joaquin, confirms it by seeing the mark on his back. Slowly Catarina and Bernarda tell him they are his mom and grandma… he remembers some scenes of when he got ‘marked’. She shows him her burn marks on her hand from the day he was marked. He finally gives in and hugs her… she thanks God for letting her find him.

Rodriguez says the current plan to rescue the Almeidas will take too long, they have to try something on their own. He is surprised to learn that Sabarain has joined them and that he will marry someone else.

MI is back at her house, crying. Says Alejo has not forgotten Pola. He is marrying her only for vengeance. But she loves him, she is sure when they marry they will be very happy. Acacia sees that very difficult. MI says she has to find a way to get Pola out of their way so she won’t spoil their marriage. Acacia insists MI does not know Pola, she is not a bad woman. MI yells at her not to say anything else. Eusebia comes and reprimends MI for yelling at Acacia, reminds her Acacia could be a free woman if she wanted to. MI has been crying very hard. But lies to her mother about what she is crying for. For happiness… She was about to lose Alejo but now they will marry.

Perez Delgado brings some info papers to Arcos to send to Morillo. Arcos asks him if he had a chance to help the patriots, would he? PD says no. careful how you speak to me. Arcos says they plan to execute the Almeidas… perhaps he can prevent it. PD recommends to him not to make a mistake that will cost him his life. Arcos calls Lopezito… after thinking it twice again, he asks Lopezito to arrange another meeting with Pola.
Pola and Juliano are riding together, she asks him to go back to Guaduas to find about Catarina’s trip. They meet with Lopezito and Arcos… Arcos tells Pola that they don’t have much time, the Almeidas will be tried by military council.

But PD has betrayed Arcos. He is coming over with Iglesias and a whole bunch of soldiers on foot. They go after Arcos and the others. Arcos reminds Pola that they can skip the royal council, it is Samano. Arcos tells Pola he is also willing to give her the documents / info she asked for. Lopezito is telling Juliano that even if their cause is a lost one due to their disadvantages, but Pola’s enthusiasm makes you incapable of leaving her alone. Pola asks Arcos to take the info himself to the plains… Arcos is afraid for her family. Pola also has siblings. The Almeidas have a mother and 4 sisters. Someone has to fight those murderers.
The troops are getting close to them. Juliano hears them first. PD yells to open fire. Lopez yells that the soldiers followed them. They start running. PD follows and hits Juliano with a gun shot. Pola realizes they left Juliano behind, sends Arcos and Lopez ahead to the royal road… she turns around to get Juliano.

Previews:
Rodriguez is assigning a mission to Pola, tells Sabarain to go with her but Alejo says he has something to do, he is getting married Saturday.

Martaivett: Muy bien. Your recap is a great introduction for tonight's episode.

I found Friday's chapter to be very disturbing. It seems that the only break Pola has had in her life came from María Matea. Her idyll with Alejo, to me, was limited to the day they spent in the field when he recited poetry to her. The rest of it has been heartwrenching. I hope this part is fiction.

Thank you, Pasofino and Marta. What a terrific job you both did setting out the (mostly) disturbing events of last Friday's show.

I would guess that the details of the romance between Alejo and La Pola are fictional. (Some historical sources doubt that the romance even existed.) I suppose though that there is a larger historical truth -- the constant conflict between personal and political allegiances and the constant shifting of allegiances.

--Just because a soldier wears a red coat, we can't assume he is loyal to the Royalists.

--A person may sympathize with the Royalists (or the Patriots) but switch sides temporarily because of the local leader.

In this environment of fluid loyalties and secret alliances, it requires a great leap of faith to trust anyone. Pola, like her mentor Nariño, KNOWINGLY takes that leap of faith. And like Nariño, she suffers the consequences.

I expect nothing of María Ignacia. But I am so disappointed in Gaspar. And as for Alejo, I can hardly stand to watch him right now.

Do you think Juliano will survive his wound and make it back to Guaduas to see little Joaquín?

NovelaMaven: Thanks for your comments. I certainly hope Juliano survives to see his son.

very true, NM... and that is where I still set Alejo and his father apart. Alejo did change royalties a few times, but he always did because at the time that is what he believed was 'right'...
his father, otoh, did it strictly based on convenience and being on the 'winners side' and the 'side that is most convenient to me' even if that meant putting his two sons on opposite ends of a war.
