La Fuerza del Destino #31 Fri 09/16/11 It's Countdown to Calamity for Merry Piece and Judgment Day for Ivan

There’s a dust storm kicking up in Alamos as Ivan gets angry at Gerardo for shtupping his mama, Alicia, back in the day and not having had respect enough to divorce Lurecia and marry her instead!  Why?  Cuz she was just a lowly servant to the spineless and class-conscious Gerry.   So now Van’s on the warpath uhhh-gain and he’s waiting around to accost Lucia to see if she knew her daddy and his mama had a thing for each other and that that’s how she got knocked up and ended up dying from that abortion.  As Viewerville tunes in, it seems that Lucia doesn’t respond well to being man-handled.

Gerry, meanwhile, pays an unexpected visit to El Socorro, aka, Suckers’ Ranch, to see if Lucrazia might have told somebody about Maripaz having a baby years ago.  Also Ivan’s been asking him questions, he says, like he suspects somebody of having his son.  No way, says Lucrazia.  Only the immediate family knows.  Why would anybody subject her and MariPaz to blackmail?  Gerry is WTF impactado to find out they’re being blackmailed, cuz like, now there’s another wrench in the works.  Lucrazia says she thinks it’s just a ruse by MP to swindle easy money out of them (er…since they got that check from the McGuires).  Gerry thinks back to Carolina’s mentioning Antolin saying he heard his mama, Arcelia, mentioning something about Merry Piece having a baby years ago.  Lulu tells him that yeah, Ivan knows about the blackmail and is supposedly going to take care of it.  He even accused her of giving the boy to somebody who’s now extorting them for money!  She, though, doesn’t think that since the baby was taken in Guymas that they tracked them back to Alamos and would be blackmailing them over it now.

Back in the school parking lot, Lucia admits that she knew her daddy’s secret and Ivan starts shaking her, asking her why she didn’t bother to tell him?  She tries to explain that she only found out herself the day before yesterday [anteayer] while at lunch with her dad.  Ivan calls her a liar.  Lucia spits out the facts.  Her dad wanted her opinion, but she left it up to him to decide what to do.  Ivan’s hopping mad.  She tells him she can’t help him, but he says of course she could!  She accuses him of being obsessed and he spits back that she’d be obsessed too if it were her child that was missing!  Van accuses her and her family of having known the whole time and covering for Gerry, but she denies it.

The school staff and principal witness the fracas and Lucia notices them watching the two of them fight.  Ivan says he could care about those old biddies.  Lucia says right!  He just jumps on a plan and heads back to the U.S., but she lives here!  She tells Ivan to cool his jets and to give her back the keys.  He refuses and says they haven’t finished their conversation yet, so she’s coming with him whether she wants to or not!  Lucia is fighting him off when La Directora intervenes.  Lucia says it’s only a misunderstanding.  Ivan excuses himself and hands her back the keys before slinking away.

The principal and the staff immediately start to wonder what’s really up.  The principal tells them about how he bought an apartment for Maripaz, and that MP divorced her friend, Sra. Mondragon’s, son to go off with Ivan but that he suddenly left her for her sister, Lucia.  Tsk!  Tsk!  Both of Lucrecia’s girls are so rash [alocada]!

Gerry confronts Carolina and tells her he thinks Antolin is the blackmailier.  Why else would he be asking so many questions about Alex?  He probably suspects, he says, that Alex is really Ivan’s also!  Carolina has a hard time believing Anto would be so devious.

Lucia is lost in thought and crying.  Camilo sees her and calls over to her.  She comes running and he lends his muy masculine shoulder to cry on.  They end up at Lookout Point where she explains why she and Van argued. He thought after all these years that Ivan would have let sleeping dogs lie, but no!  He’s become obsessed with it and that’s why he really returned to Mexico.  They agree that they both care about Ivan.  She feels guilty for protecting her father.  Cam says it’s only natural.  Anyway, she was only thirteen at the time and really had nothing to do with any of it.  Cam’s grateful for all that Ivan’s done for him recently, but they both have to realize that the tragedies Van’s lived through early in life have unfortunately marked him forever.  Bottom line, if Ivan continues to jerk her around there are plenty of other self-respecting men around who’d give their right arm to be with Lucia and claim her as their own. (We note that he counts himself as the first in line.)

At the hospital, Ivan gives Anthony a rundown of the morning’s nasty run-in with Lucia.  Tony tells Van he blew a decent chance at reconciling with his girlfriend.  Ivan admits losing his temper was not conducive to making up after breaking up, but the rage he felt at not being told was bigger than the both of them.  (Yep, Ivan has definite trust and anger management issues, to say the least!)  For all of Tony’s trying to reason and defend Lucia, Van still thinks all she was trying to do was to cover for Daddy.  Tony insists Carlota says different and that’s good enough for him!  If Van doesn’t want to believe it then that’s his problem.  Don’t bother asking him for advice any more cuz he doesn’t listen anyway!

Cam goes home and gripes to Celia about the brutish way Ivan treated Lucia and made her cry when he found out she knew about his mother and Alicia.  He stops to scold Carmen for putting on airs at Ivan’s casota and then starts in again about Ivan.  Celia wants to know why all of a sudden it matters to him what happens between Ivan and Lucia?  Cam gets flustered and races out of the room.  “—It doesn’t matter at all!  Not at all!”  Celia can’t believe her son’s actually crying.

That night at supper, Lucrazia tells Carlota and Lucia about Gerry’s visit and that he said Ivan’s been going around asking questions about his son.  Lucia’s worried about MP because she’s terrified of the extortion demand.  Lulu would rather hide her head in the sand and think that if she refuses to accept it as the truth it will just go away.  Carlota says as much.  “—And if what you suspect isn’t correct?”  “—Well, what?  You don’t want to pay all that money, do you?”  Carlota reminds her that if the threat isn’t just a ploy by Merry Piece then not only is MP’s reputation gone to Hell in a handbasket, but Lucia’s is also!  Does she really want that for Lucia?  Lucia tells them not to worry about her, but Carly says of course she will!  Lucia’s got her whole life ahead of her and she was Ivan’s girlfriend.  She can only imagine the kind of scandal all of this is going to blow up into! She suggests they don’t touch Tony’s cash, but sell their town house and pay the blackmail.  Lucre-cia jumps up from the table and says Hell No!  Let Maripaz figure it out on her own.  She can beg Ivan on her knees for all she cares!

Lucia’s had enough and heads off to bed.  Carly gives Tony a call.  He tells her that Ivan and Lucia had a fight earlier in the day over her knowing that Gerry was the man who Alicia was having an affair with and who got her pregnant, and then not telling him she knew.  Carly is OMG! Impactada.  She says that Lucia never mentioned seeing Van, much less told her about their fight!  He says well, don’t bother bringing it up to her then, either.

Lucia is on the treadmill when Cam calls to check on her.  He is obviously gaga over her.  She is happy just to have a friend to check on her.

The next morning Ivan and Cam are on their way to their appointment with the head accountant of the local agricultural association.  They’re discussing some plan to offer money to someone and trick him (I think it’s to the accountant himself).  At the meeting they ask him to handle the accounts for McGuire and Co. and learn that he considers himself Juan Jaime’s personal friend.

Later that afternoon, Lucia returns home and is running a high fever.  Carly rushes her into bed and says if she’s not feeling better in a few hours after some medicinal tea, then they’re going to call a doctor over to check on her.

Later in the afternoon, the doctor tells Carly and Lulu that he suspects Lucia has Dengue fever since there’s been an outbreak [brote] in the city recently and any mosquito bite could have done her in.  Lucre-zia is more worried that the treatment for it will be expensive.

Van and Cam leave the accountant’s office and decide not to make their move till they find out what Lic. Torres has decided to do about the Meandragons’ complaint.  Cam asks if Van’s spoken to Lucia since.   He says he’d rather not talk about it and takes off.

At Gerry’s place, Anto is fixing Carolina tea.  He mentions she seems distracted.  Carolina says well, if he really wants to know what’s on her mind, she thinks he’s the one blackmailing Merry Piece.  Anto  is all who, me?   Caro says yeah, well a couple of days ago he was asking all sorts of questions about MP’s baby and then suddenly she gets a blackmail call.  “--Sorry, Anto, but knowing you the way I do, I don’t doubt for a minute that you’re the one blackmailing her.”  Again Anto acts pure as the wind driven snow.  How could she think that he’d do something as wicked as to harm somebody close to her like that?  Caro says she certainly hopes that’s true, because otherwise forget their friendship.  (Big whoop.)  Oh, perish the thought!  She should know that her friendship is worth more to him than anything in this world!  She has to believe him when he says he’s got nothing to do with that!!

Anto heads straight from Carolina’s to the pool hall to confab with El Gordo.  The blackmail deal dies here tonight, says Anto.  Gordy ain’t having any of it though.  Anto explains that he just found out he’s suspect numero uno and so he’s got to back off, and if Gordy is smart (and Viewerville is safe in assuming he’s not up for any I.Q. awards) that he’ll take his advice and leave it alone too, cuz everyone knows Gordy is as close to him as fleas are on a hound dog.  He’d be suspect numero dos.  Gordy tries talking him out of throwing the towel [aventar la toalla] in so soon.  Anto warns him off.  “—It’s history and that’s an order!”

Later that afternoon, everyone welcomes Tony to his new house.  Ivan surprises him with a beautiful new Golden Lab for a house pet named Bruno.  Bruno comes complete with his own personal trainer.

JJ drops by to see the head accountant himself and learns that McGuire and Co. have asked him to handle their accounts.  Surely they don’t understand that they have their own way of doing the books at The Association, says the accountant.  Right, says JJ.  A bit strange, and he doesn’t doubt for a minute that they were hoping to see if he’d jump at the bait and agree to something he shouldn’t.  JJ warns the accountant to be on the lookout for some kind of bribery attempt [suborno].  They’re too smart by half and probably think they’ll catch ol’ JJ and get him into some sort of legal jam.  The accountant better not let them twist his arm cuz he’s up to his neck in this accounting funny business, too.   C.P.A. Guy says not to worry.  He’s his man all they way.   Neither of those pig-headed fools will get even a peep [pío] out of him!  Just then he takes a call from his sexratary who tells him Lic. Torres and he have a meeting about his complaint with the McGuires.

Carmen hands Ivan a letter addressed to him from Lic. Castaña “regarding the matter of an inheritance.”  Ivan wonders what inheritance.

The principal from the school stops by to visit—and gossip—with Esther Meandragon.  The first thing out of her mouth is that she saw Lucia and the McGuire boy fighting.  Yes he was pulling and she was yelling!  What a scandal!!  It certainly was, she asserts, over the way he had set up her sister in an apartment!!  Ester clucks and tells Judith she’s not to associate with the two Lomeli girls any longer.  They’re nothing but trash and if Jud hangs around with them everyone will think she’s cut from the same cheap cloth. Nobody will have respect for her then!

Back at Ivan’s new digs, Cam gets on Carmen’s case for being too chummy with Ivan.  He has to agree and he gives her a couple of tips on being “discrete.”  She backs down and excuses herself—politely for once.  FF>>

Back at the Meandragon’s, Esther and La Directora continue to cluck.  FF>>

Ivan tells Tony about the letter from the attorney and the supposed inheritance.  Van calls the attorney who tells him that his mother, being the daughter of Teodoro Curiel, inherited part of the rancho and that both Carlota and Lucia arranged for him to receive it.  Van says he wants nothing to do with it, but the lawyer talks him into coming anyway.  After he hangs up, Tony asks what he found out.  Ivan explains.  Tony thinks it’s a decent thing to do, but Ivan says not at this point [estas alturas] considering she died in poverty and they never raised a hand to relieve her situation while she was alive!  Tony reminds him that it’s never too late to right a wrong.  Hah!  Ivan replies cynically that they are only doing it to stay on Tony’s good side so they can continue to receive his financial support.  Tony loses his patience and tells him he shouldn’t be so distrustful (I say paranoid) all the time!  He doesn’t care and is going to continue to help them, period!  Van screams back that he can think what he wants, but he doesn’t’ want any part of them and races off in a snit.

Ivan arrives at Carly’s ready to give her grief again, but he finds out from Cleto that everyone’s gone to the hospital because Lucia’s really sick.  Gloria tells him which hospital they’ve gone to and he races off again to be at her side.  Gloria mentions how he’s run off without even saying good-bye.  Cleto replies that Ive’s worried for Lucia.  Gloria says he really loves her, doesn’t he?  Clete answers that that’s the whole problem in a nutshell: Sra. Lucrazia can’t stand him and then Maripaz is hot on his heels to have him back.  That’s what the fight the other night was all about, he adds.

At the hospital, the doctor tells Carly and Lulu that Lucia’s got Dengue, but she’s also anemic and it’s complicated things.  She’s very weak and needs to stay for observation.  Just then Ivan races in and asks about her situation and the doctor explains it all again (yes, even though he’s not part of the immediate family).  Nobody can speak with her right now.  Lucre-zia complains to Carly about the expense of having Lucia stay in a hospital. Carly hisses back that she’d strangle her if they were in public right now! Ivan offers to pay all the expenses.  Lucre-zia throws a fit and says they don’t need his charity! [limosna]  Carly thanks him for coming, anyway.

On Ive’s way out Lucre-zia has a change of heart (no doubt after remembering he’s supposed to pay off the blackmailer) and grabs him to apologize.  She blames her outburst on nerves from the blackmail situation.  “—I suppose you are going to pay it like you promised, right?”  He gives her the stink-eye and walks off without a word.  Lulu isn’t used to someone pulling rank like that and hisses under her breath once he’s gone.  “—Pelado!!” [rude, impudent, course, working class, impoverished all rolled into one]  She tells Carly what she thinks of him after that and Carly says pretty much “like you should talk!”

Across town, Merry Piece gets another blackmail call from Gordy, despite the warning from Antolin.  “—You think this is a game we’re playing?  Where’s my money??”  She tells him that McGuire’s the one suppose to pay him.  Sorry sweet-cheeks, but he’s a skin flinty SOB who only wants to know where the brat is!  We have no idea so you either pay up the $4 milliones or your secret’s going to be broadcast all over town.  You’ve got two days!”  Click!!  MP panics and tries calling Ivan.  Van refuses to pick up.  She calls home for Grams then and learns everyone’s at the hospital.

Van calls Cam and tells him what’s up.  Cam says they’ve got an appointment with Torres and JJM later that morning.  FF>>

Merry Piece races over to the hospital to beg the money from Carly.  Sure, she knows she’s been a bad girl, she begs, but she’s ready to mend her ways. Just don’t abandon her!  Carly gives in—not for her, but for Lucia, she says.  It doesn’t matter why, says MP, just that she does it!

Outside Lic. Torres’ office, Juan Jeil-me shows up.  Cam and Ive are just about to go in themselves.  “—Glad to see you here, Ivan!  No doubt my buddy, the director, has listened to me and will be looking into the matter [tomar cartas en el asunto].”  We get another stink-eyed response from Ivan.

Jardinera, thank you once again for our Saturday recap.

I could not believe that MerryPutz put the guilt trip on her grandmother. The whole town knows what she is like so this latest news probably wouldn't faze them a bit.

Carolina knows what Antolin is like and she still remains his friend -strange bedfellows!

I was surprised about the Dengue Fever so I went to Google and found that it is a serious problem in Mexico. They are especially concerned this year because of the Pan American Games in October. So I guess this is PSA for everyone to get rid of the standing water.

LuCrazy will do anything for money.

Rosemary

Thanks for your recap Jardinera. The title really hit the mark.

So Antolin calls off the blackmail attempt but not b/c he cares for Carolina. El Gordo may be another causality (just a guess). I think Carolina is letting her liking Antolin cloud her judgement about him.

While Ivan does need anger management classes (don't shake your girlfriend/future wife like a rag doll), I can't write off his desire to find his son an obsession. His obsession is his need for revenge but what parent wouldn't search heaven and earth for his/her child?

"Van’s on the warpath uhhh-gain"

Jardinera, that line just tickled me. You expressed everyone's frustration with Ivan perfectly. Homeboy needs to chill out. That fight with Lucia was ugly, caused a scene, and sent her straight into the arms of Camilo. (Did you notice all the crows around as Camilo made the moves on Lucia?)

I had to laugh every time someone said "poor Lucrezia" in reference to her TWO shameful daughters. I rolled my eyes each time.

I was actually quite impressed with how quickly Gerry figured out it had to be Antolin behind the blackmail, and then with how directly Carolina confronted him about it. And yet these two have been so cowardly about telling Ivan the truth about his mom and son!

I had Dengue fever when I was in Peace Corps in Haiti. It wasn't fun. It's called "bone break fever" for a reason. But as the doctore said, Lucia (and I) was lucky not to get the hemorrhagic type. If Ivan is going to feel so panicked each time Lucia gets sick or gets hurt, maybe he shouldn't take it upon himself to hurt her emotionally or physically whenever he's in a snit.

Wonderful recap, Jardinera! I liked the "uhhh-gain" line, too.

Am I the only one who thought it was ridiculous when Ivan asked which hospital Lucia was at? Uh...Sagrado Corazon, doofus. The only one they've shown since the beginning.

And what did the crow mean? Is Camilo doomed? It was really creepy, heavy-handed symbolism.

Good work, Jardinera.

Merry Piece is out only for Merry Piece. She doesn't care what anyone would say about Lucia.

Those metiches at Lucia's school definitely need to get a life.

El Gordo will be sleeping with the fishes before this story is over.

Great recap Jardinera!

How odd that Lucía had to stay at the hospital for a case of classic dengue. I've had it twice and the only thing you can do is try to have some paracetamol for the pain (which doesn't work at all) and then wait for it to go away. Maybe it's because she was anemic too, but it still seems too much.

Jarocha

Jarocha- I think it is the anemia that's the deciding factor in the hospitalization. I remember well how nothing really works to dull the pain of Dengue (bone break fever). Just time, rest, and fluids.

Maybe my novela-fu is weak, but how often do we get to see the male protagonist of a novela flip out and go all "The entire world's against me!" the way Ivan is doing in this show? He's starting to sound like Piedad from Alguien te mira, only with less bitchiness and more bombast. (And since Camilo is apparently starting to have feeling for Lucia, we have that "betrayal" to look forward to. Oh, boy.)

Hi all! Ivan's temper tantrums and paranoia do not sit well with me. He needs a call from Dr. Laura. On the other hand, every couple of days he receives another mind-boggling truth--like Chinese water torture: drip, drip, drip. Either way I think he's overdue for a little professional help!!

Jardinera, wonderful recap thank you as always!

Ivan needs anger management therapy STAT. At least there was a bright spot--he realized he was being a jerk all on his own.

Someone should put a boiled egg on Sra Olga's mouth; this woman is perversely nozzy.

I think the crow represents doom and betrayal in the case of Maripazz and Camilo. In the closing credits; we've seen it between a shot of Camilo and Maripaz--and Friday it was truly heavy handed on that symbolism.

I'm so not looking forward seing Camilo and Lucia making lovey dovey proclamations to each other.

Although Antolin denied being involved in the extortion scheme; it seems that he truly values how Carolina sees him and for her he might go legit one day. I'm truly intrigue by his story-he seems the anti hero type.

Ok -- it's a done deal now; I'm the first in line for my "I hate Camilo" t-shirt. I'll never understand how and why he falls for Lucia; the fact that he knows all of Ivan's woes and how much Lucia means to Ivan makes his impending betrayal more poignant for me--another theme in this telenovela--friendship/brotherhood vs the love/lust for a woman.

Per the previews; next week looks very impacting--JJ will know who Ivan is and why he hates him; how will he react?

Myo-

Maybe Cam will "suffer" in silence over his love/lust for Lucia. We need an infusion of decent women into this town! Why does every guy in this novela gotta go head over heels for Lucia? Jes sayin', that's the way it's starting to trend....

Thanks for taking a kind of annoying episode and making it into a great recap. Very useful vocab, too.

I heard on the news this morning that there have also been outbreaks of dengue in the southern U.S. lately. They were urging people to get rid of standing water.

QTH is wrong with Camilo? What a terrible friend. I know he's jealous of Ivan but moving in on his beloved is too much. Why can't he go for Judith or someone? Why does no one love Judith?

Camilo has betrayed Ivan before, and then felt so horribly guilty about it he destroyed rather than read Ivan's letters or shared them with his family (another type of betrayal). So I suppose that is his role in this novela - the betraying BFF.

Audrey

Thanks, Jardinera, and all the recappers. I am catching up on the recaps this weekend. I needed Thursday's as I didn't know LAdD was on. When did they squeeze in the show?

Gerry, man up and for once be proactive. Gordy is going solo with the blackmail and will incur Antolin's wrath and we know he is capable of stabbing someone in the back. Antolin is still a gray figure. He values Carolina but she has figured out he is the blackmailer and now knows she's been used. Where will this lead in their unusual relationship?

I hope for more scenes with the Golden Retriever...such a beautiful dog.

GinCA

Happy Sunday All! Thanks Jardinera for a lovely recap. Am I the only one who thinks Ivan's anger is justified?
This decent Curiel family has [1] rubbed his mother of her inheritance. [2] Lucrazy abused her husband so much and drove him into his mother's arms, thereby causing her death. [3] Tried to have him killed. [4] Threw his son away or didn't bother looking for him when they thought he was kidnapped. As if that wasn't enough he returns rich and they want him to pay for MP blackmail. Papa Toni may be in love with Carlotta, and blind to her faults but she started all this. Teodoro loved and care for her kid and all he asked for in return was for her to honor his wishes when he died and what does she do? Let Lucrazy call the shots.I am pretty sure he did not acknowledge his daughter out of respect for her. Don't get me started on JJ. What a creep. He knows he has a son with Alicia.Has he ever bother of find out what happened to him when his mother died? The treatment of servants and their children in TNs are awful.Kind of like slavery in the past. Are these story lines purely fictional or they reflective of Spanish culture in general. The incestuous story lines are a bit too much. They recycle themselves so much it makes one dizzy. Sorry if I sound like a bitter lemon, but I find these stories worrisome.

Lucy

Lucy:

Welcome! Jarocha can inform you better than I about the current day Mexican social structure and the way the upper classes think of and act toward the servant and/or less affluent classes. This is the standard fare though for the telenovela and we've been led to believe that this is exactly the situation there, although, telenovelas exaggerate everything because it's the nature of the genre: melodrama and morality play all rolled into one.

Lucy--You are not alone. I think Ivan's anger is justified too.

Sondie

Does JJ even know Alicia died?

JJ will probably feel a secret sense of pride underneath his hatred of Ivan that Ivan is just as strong & cunning like he is, not weak doofuses like Saul & David.

Nobody loves Judith b/c they are not trying to get tangled up with JJ (and Saul).

Anon, I disagree.

Saul and David are the result of JJ's bad parenting and he doesn't want them to be strong. They can dethrone him if they are strong men. Ivan can dethrone him easily. He can't be controlled. JJ will fight back in passive/aggressive ways but will lose in the end.

My gut also says he doesn't know that Alicia died.

Anon207/Urban A: I like both your takes on how JJM will react to the eventual knowledge that Ivan's his son--is he his oldest son? Somehow I think it will have to be a combination of the two.

Thanks again, all, for your comnents!

JJ will hate Ivan because Ivan is stronger than he is. That's why he hated Ivan from when they first met...Ivan wouldn't take no $#!t off of him and fiercely protected Alicia.

As much as JJ doesn't want Saul & David to be strong, he also hates them for being so weak.

That's why JJ might hate Ivan for being so strong, but he'll also have a sense of pride/respect for him that a) Ivans's as strong as he, Juan Jaime MondragON and b) Ivan's not weak like Saul & David.

Thank you, Jardinera. I'm late to the gate on commenting but appreciated the summary when I read it over the weekend. I especially like the "clucking" description of our town gossips.

IMHO, Ivan is justified in his anger but his aggressive stance toward Lucia bothers me. The grabbing, etc., won't win friends in viewerville or novelaville. Camilo will seem an even more attractive guy with his passivity (passive aggressiveness, perhaps).

I have read in various commentaries on novelas that the rural ones, in particular, with their recalling of traditional social structures, are attractive because they remind viewers of an older, more predictable time. I don't know Mexico but there does remain a lot of deferential behavior on the part of the poor and empleados especially toward the rich in rural areas of Central America.

There is a wonderful Argentinian movie on this theme call Cama Adentro, in which the tables turn during the financial crisis in Argentina and the mistress/servant ties shift. It's on Netflix streaming if anyone is interested.

I like the more modern novelas. I loved La Palabra de Mujer, for example, but it was broadcast at 3 p.m. here and I gather wasn't much of a hit in Mexico, despite the presence of Edith Gonzalez, Yadhira Carillo and Ludwika Paleta. A very much different view of the class structure and modern challenges to it.

I think the order is either:

Saul age?
Ivan -30 yrs old
Judith -29 yrs old
David -25 yrs old

or

Ivan 30 yrs old
Saul age?
Judith -29 yrs old
David -25 yrs old

Maripaz is 29, Judith is her school chum so probably also 29

Ivan is a year older than Maripaz (30)

Lucia is 5 yrs younger than Maripaz (24)

David was about 8 or 9 years old when he was reading the book so he's probably around the same age as Lucia (24/25)

Were Maripaz and Judith in school together? Here's how I'd see the age thing:
Antolin= early 30's and the oldest (and most cunning due to all his old age wisdom)

Maripaz-Saul-Ivan-Camillo= All about 29/30. Weren't MP and Ivan the same age when they were "dating", and Ivan and Camillo the same?

The David and Lucia around 25 or mid-20's. Carmen too.

Judith= I thought she was the youngest, early 20's. Old enough to go bar hopping with MP but still young enough not to be pawned off in marriage yet. Can't believe JJ hasn't tried to sell her to Ivan yet. It wouldn't be a terrible plan on his part.

Kelly- Yes, MP and Judith are the same age. Remember back to when teen MP and teen Judith were chatting on the lawn and little girl Lucia runs up to chat with them. MP is very rude to her and Judith is nice to her. Teen Ivan spies on them from the bushes.
