Una Familia Con Suerte #9 Mon 10/17/11 Where exactly does Candela go at night? Vince vows vengeance.

It's lucky for me this show's plot is crawling along since I'm supposedly recapping three nights a week. Any volunteers?

The real reasons to watch: the people are adorable (even the villains) and the language is loads of fun.
  • We start with a brief but delicious rehash of Vince's humiliation during the soiree at which he was NOT named next president of Avon Mexico. After all his swaggering and yelling (and getting his foot peed on by Popeye, good doggie!) he is escorted out by bouncers, Enzo skulking out behind (behind a pot of flowers). He mutters about revenge.
  • Tomas discovers Monica is Enzo's daughter. Freddy finds out Monica knew from Pepe that his dad would be named president. Pancho finds out Enzo works for Fernanda and that she engineered the embargo. Vince finds out Rebeca knew everything and whines: "You were part of this circus! You did it to spite me!" He grabs her just as Pina enters.
  • Pancho tells Fer she was diabolical and conniving! Now he sees her whole plot: "I'm poor, not stupid."

She said she deceived him for his own good. "How can you assume you know what's best for us?" Then Fer not only coaxes Pancho to forgive her, she begs! "I need to leave a legacy of goodness, I want to be good to you and your family."

He says he'll forgive her and assume the presidency on one condition - that she promises to get well. He says he'll remain president only so long as she is in Germany for treatment. "I don't believe in contracts, I believe in people. Look me in the eye and promise you'll be cured." As a mom of a son who's survived cancer to this point, I am very uncomfortable with this whole idea. Illness is not under the control of patients, and to make them think so is to increase their woe when things don't go well.
  • Veence arrives in a lobby full of buxom lasses dressed as nurses, housemaids, elves, schoolgirls, etc., so it must be a whorehouse! No, turns out it's "Club el Paraiso" (Paradise Club), gentlemen's massages, no touching allowed. He tells the madame he needs someone to help him forget his humiliation. She ignores Natasha the elf and offers him - Catwoman (Catreaux)!

Well, guess what, Catreaux is Pancho's sister Candela and after she walks on Vince's back he gets up and starts chasing her around the table. She recognizes him as he's being escorted out by (more) bouncers. Natasha the elf saw all.
  • Chela feeds a lot of people over the course of the evening. Pancho says money and power won't change him - others disagree. "You'll have loads of women. You'll never know who is really your friend." Candy is quite ready to be a princess! Pancho insists on all their support - especially directing himself to the still-resentful Chela, who reluctantly agrees.
  • Rebeca asks Fer how long the 'President Pancho' charade will go on. Fer says, "until I'm cured!" "But he can't do it!" "He'll learn." Pina comes in to yell at her mother-in-law (the same stuff) and says "You've made the worst decision of your life. Making that garbage president! You'll lose everything!"
  • Pina tries to get Vince's attention and complain about the lack of sympathy shown by Fernanda, but Vince is wearing his black silken eye mask and ignores her. He dreams about the adorable kitten-lady in black leather and studs, and also about following behind Pancho carrying Pancho's flotsam while being yelled at.
  • It's Pancho's first day of school! Uh, work at Avon. He drives up and immediately yells at the parking guy; he says he can leave his delivery truck at the curb if he wants, he can even drive it into the lobby if he wants, because he's president!

He's somewhat deflated, even scared, as he enters the lobby (dressed like a vegetable vendor). Soon he revives and is ready, he tells Rebeca (who is wearing a hideous skirt), to make his first decision as president. He calls Enzo into his office ...

    ... and fires him!
Tomorrow: there is DANGER to the casa popular!

ugh! this show is awful! can't wait for tomorrow!

i didn't think i'd watch b/c i couldn't easily make out the words from the speed, sing song and slang, but i want to see pancho get a makeover. cut that hair, gerard depardeiux!

thanks for recapping!

Mai Tai, thanks for your comment! Notice how you are the only one? A simple comment really helps making the time I spent doing the recap seem worthwhile. Sometimes we pull the plug on these shows because it seems nobody's reading the posts. So, lurkers, speak up, because your comments help keep us on the air!

i truly appreciate your recapping! please keep it up. i love the show; it always produces a belly laugh or two and then again with your great witty recaps.

i think i figured out "casa Popular" (if this hasn't already been discussed. it looks like its a compound where many families live. it looks like they eat communally. during the eviction scene, there was a shot into a gated common area with homes on each side.

also, what does "onda" (either mala or bella) mean?

carolina

Thanks Melinama! I agree with you about the depiction of cancer. (I had a similar gripe with diseases in Alborada: much as I enjoy watching villains suffer, I'm not happy with the implication that diseases punish the bad guys and spare the virtuous.)

I don't know why I thought the "secret" of Fernanda scheming with Enzo to evict the family would go on and on and on... it's already been exposed. But now there are plenty more secrets... like Candela and Vince.

Mai Tai, now you've got me thinking about that makeover and wondering if Pancho cleans up nice. Something tells me he will resist a makeover for as long as possible (a la La Fea Mas Bella) because of his promise not to change, but maybe Rebeca will charm him into it sooner!

Thanks for another stellar recap! I am very glad that the vecinidad folks are clever enough to figure out these plots, like Fer's.

Why does Candela work at that place? Is it to earn extra money to help the family? Why do the women need to dress up in those costumes if the men are going to be face down only getting a basic massage?

onda = wave
mala onda = bad luck, bummer, "that sucks"

Also, saying a person is mala onda is like calling them a downer, someone who's always in a bad mood or has a bad attitude.

Vivi, I think part of the reason the women wear those costumes is to maintain their anonymity in case the guy doesn't stay face down like he's supposed to. ;-) And then he still has a way to ask for the one that he wants next time. AND if that girl isn't available, someone else can wear her costume and maybe the guy won't know the difference.

As to why Candy started working there, maybe she has no other skills and thought it would make more money than selling vegetables at the market? But she shouldn't still have to work there now... I know I'd quit a job like that right away if my family came into some big money! She must have a secret debt she doesn't want Pancho to know about. HMMM! The secrets, they are multiplying fast.

Carolina and Mai Tai...thanks for commenting. Yes, Melinama and Julie are putting in a lot of time on these recaps, so they need to know that people are not only watching, but reading...and being helped by the recaps.

I think the lust Vicente is feeling for Candela will provide us with a lot of funny moments. Nice to see Sendel playing a goofball for a change...though he's still a villanous goofball.

Melinama...fun, fast and furious...I always love your straight-to-the-point recaps. An elegant theory is one that is true with just enough information....your recaps are always "elegant".

Great recap--please don't pull the plug on this show. There are some less-than-interesting characters, but overall it's pretty amusing. As a Spanish learner, I find it much easier if the show has some comedy, instead of the usual heavy drama in a lot of shows.

What's up with the sing-songy way of talking. Noticed last night that almost everyone at Pancho's house was talking that way. Is it unique to that part of Mexico?

Chapel Hill Fiddler, enjoyed your recap. Fun and witty, plus it helped me keep up with who's who. I like the silliness of this TN and trying to decipher what Pancho is saying. I always enjoy seeing Sergio Sendel. He and his perrito have great chemistry.

Melinama, thank you for the super recap of another fun episode.

Carolina, we did discuss casa popular but I don't recall that we settled on a definitive meaning. I very much like your theory about the compound with communal area. I think you've hit the nail on the head. Thanks for that.

Gerard Depardieux...LOL!! I agree that we probably won't see a change in his looks any too soon. Part of his whole sing-songy Naco schtick is his bad hair.

Vivi, I was a bit taken aback at Candela's career choice. I assume the pay is better than being a waitress for example. Also, maybe she has a deep-seated desire to be chased around the massage table? At any rate, it seems "Catreaux", by virtue of her anonymity, is somehow a higher class of masseuse than the wicked elf who blatantly shows her face.

Julie, your theory about a secret debt...yes, that could be a reason for Candy's job. Plus, as JudyB notes, it is good fodder for more goofball hi-jinx.

Rip, that sing-songy way of talking is how these shows always portray the "nacos". They are the supposedly lower social class of people in Mexico City (aka The DF) who live in the vecindad (hood). They are usually portrayed as having better family values, morals and ethics than the higher class folks who are usually portrayed as being snobs. As Julie pointed out earlier, think along the lines of the greasers and socs (The Outsiders).

I suppose another reason Candela might take a job would be to avoid being dependent on Pancho, but she doesn't seem to have that problem. ;-)

Last night, Chela did question Candy about her whereabouts, but the conversation didn't really go anywhere. Chela said something like "you went back to that forbidden place again, didn't you?", but that was the end of the conversation as far as we saw. So now we know that Chela knows a little bit about the job, but we don't know how much she knows.

Tks so much, the show was very funny, especially Vicente. Candela probably has that job so the guys watching can have a look at her great legs.

Melinama and Julie, your efforts are greatly appreciated. I never miss the recaps.

I've noticed that sing-song thing in many novelas & I don't think it is limited to DF. It seems to be the campasinos o pobres. I imagine that really is the case in Mex, but would like Jarocha's opinion.

Love that fluff Abeja, wait until Popeye finds her, that's the love story I'm waiting for.

Pancho should clean up well. He showed up looking like a a real bumpkin.

Variopinta

Aha. I missed that comment. It sounds more like Candela has a deep need to perform. She is always shaking it at the family fiestas but perhaps she needs to go to the "forbidden place" to feel fully appreciated (not to mention the tips). Reminds me of Fedra in Llena de Amor who moonlighted as the star stripper at La Mala Noche.

Variopinta, I'm with you on the doggie romance. I wonder if the pooches will be as obsessed with social class as the humans?

If Abeja falls for Popeye, Vicente will blow a gasket since he thinks Abeja is the only "person' who has never betrayed him. That would be a huge betrayal. He might just take that diamond collar back!

Oh, I am dying for the dogs to meet.

While I can't imagine Pina allowing a dog to go into heat in her presence, I predict that Abeja will turn out to be unspayed for maximum comic effect.
