La Fuerza del Destino #68-69 Wed 11/09/11 La Fuerza de Resignation Has Many Faces

Recap by Urban Anthropologist

Dios mio, my first double header, so there will not be as much conversation detail. Please provide any missing details. Gracias.

Antes

Maripaz tries, Ivan's not having any. Camilo and Lucia marry while Ivan pines. Lucia's daughter is born.

Nuevo

Hacienda Socorro: Lucrazia carries on about what people are saying that the baby was born only 7 months after the wedding and won't have to spend extra time in the hospital for being premature. Carlota doesn't care; she happily announces to the servants that the baby is healthy and beautiful.

Hospital: Camilo calls Antolin to tell him the happy news; Antolin is at the Lomieli house. Antolin congratulates him. When Gerry mentions the baby's size and weight, Antolin comments on her being early. He asks whom she looks like and Carolina says that babies don't look like anyone yet. Gerry just says the baby is pretty.

Casa Galvan: Little Lichita asks about her new cousin as Carmen tries on earrings and Arcelia helps with Lichita's drawing. Someone's priorities need adjustment.

Lucia's Hospital Room: Lucia thanks Camilo and starts to say that the baby is Ivan's, but Camilo stops her. “This subject is not to be mentioned again. This little girl is my daughter and you are my wife. My woman.” He declares his love for her and they decide to name the baby Perla because she is a jewel fallen into their lives. Camilo states she has made him very happy, but Lucia is about to cry as she kisses the baby.

Casa Mondragon: The family talk about Lucia, with Esther commenting on her morals. JJ stops that one by commenting that the child's paternity is of no importance. David mentions that Saul is getting out of the hospital shortly and needs a place to stay. David can't accommodate his needs and leads the charge to get Saul back into the family home. He lets JJ know that people will think very badly of him if he doesn't allow it. Saul still needs three operations and again they will have to browbeat JJ into paying the bill. David will be head of this family at the end.

Commercial Break leading with promo for the Latin Grammys and an announcement that the sponsor is Popeye's Chicken and an ad for their crawfish combo. Wish I had some right now.

Rancho Socorro, just outside the hacienda: Ezekiel runs inside to announce that Lucia and the baby are home. Lucrazia and Carlota come out to make a fuss over the baby. As they go into Lucia's bedroom Carlota shows off the cradle and other stuff Camilo bought. Lucrazia starts talking about the baptism, but Lucia just wants to rest. Wise girl.

McGuire Mansion: At Ivan's suggestion, Alex calls Gerry to invite him and Carolina on a vacation with them. Gerry has a lot of work, so he doesn't think he can go. Both he and Carolina are still keeping mum about Lucia and Alex ends the conversation in tears. Tony theorizes that Lucia doesn't want anything to do with them anymore because of her pain and that they must respect that.

LA Restaurant: Merry Piece has been gambling, but Julie comments on why she doesn't bring her husband. Merry Piece says he's always working and he's a bore. Julie considers it strange that they haven't met him and why won't MP bring him to dine with them. Merry Piece continues to refuse. Tacky bitch. But Julie is looking suspish. And Bob thinks this is so rich.

Hacienda Socorro, night:L Perla wakes up crying to be fed, interrupting Camilo's attempt at getting amorous. Camilo gets up to rock the baby. Husbands like this don't grow on trees, Lucia.

Hacienda Socorro, morning on the porch: Lucia's friend comes over with gifts. She asks her why David married Merry Piece. Lucia isn't sure other than MP wanted to marry money because David was always so shy with girls. When that didn't work MP later went after Ivan again. Her friend says that things get better all the time with David. Lucia is happy for that. She finally explains that Camilo is a good man and she is content.

But we know that won't last. What will not only last but escalate is our collective hatred of Merry Piece. You have been warned about the next scene.

McGuire Mansion, various rooms: Merry Piece is clearly making a date with Bob on her cell phone as she comes down the stairs. As she hangs up she sees Alex. .

MP (yelling): What are you doing? Listening?
Alex: No. Grandpa went to a business lunch and I was playing.
MP: Did you hear anything I was saying on the cell phone?
Alex: Yes. You are meeting someone at 5 and said “kiss.”
MP (grabbing him by the right arm and left ear): If you open your mouth about this I will leave you [rest is unintelligible but probably horrible].

Bruno comes running in and barks, scaring the crap out of the bitch. Benito is right behind him.

Benito: Bruno, calm down! (grabs the leash)
MP (looking perfectly demonic): This dog is a dangerous animal. Kill him now!
Benito: Nothing happened, Señora. [something blipped out]
MP: In every way this dog is a menace. I'm going to report this to the authorities so they will kill it. They'll take it away.
Alex: No! No! (Maria enters)
Maria: What happened?
Benito: Nothing, Maria. Bruno barked at the señora.
MP: He frightened me. He frightens me. I will see to it that this beast is removed from this house. (exits back toward staircase)
Alex: No, Benito! No! Bruno only wanted to defend me.
Benito: From what?
Alex: My mother grabbed me by the ear.

Ivan and Tony enter. Alex runs to Ivan.

Alex: Papa! Mother wants to get rid of Bruno.
Ivan: Why?
Tony: What happened?
Benito: Nothing. Only that it looked like la señora was hurting Alex.
Alex: She grabbed me by the ear.

As Tony hugs the child Ivan heads to Merry Piece's room of exile, where she has picked up the phone.

MP: This minute I will call the dogcatcher to get rid of that accursed animal!
Maria: But if he's done nothing –
MP (phone to ear while pointing to the door): Get out of here! (Maria exits as Ivan enters)
Ivan: Who are you calling?
MP: Anyone who can protect me from that damned animal!
Ivan: You aren't going to talk to anybody! (takes the phone away and ends the connexion) You hit my son and it's normal for Bruno to protect him.
MP: I wasn't hitting him, just reproaching him. And I have the right because I'm his mother.
Ivan: And why were you reproaching him?
MP: Because he disobeyed me.
Ivan (grabbing her by the elbow): Come with me.
MP: Leave me alone!
Ivan: You're coming with me! (leads her out of the room)

Tony (to Alex, who is sitting on his lap): Don't worry. Nothing is going to happen to Bruno.

We viewers are certainly hoping he's right.

MP: He's going to be sorry because he left his clothes all over the floor.
Alex: That's not true.
Tony: Therefore, what happened?
Alex: Nothing. Nothing happened. (exits)
Ivan (to MP): As I've said before, you raise a hand to my son I will divorce you immediately.
MP: But I have the right to scold him. [regañar]
Ivan: You have no rights over him because this puts an end to it.
MP: But I don't want that dog to go all over the house –
Tony: If Bruno becomes aggressive it's because he's been provoked. Besides, this is my house and my dog. Punto. (Benito is watching this carefully while petting Bruno)
MP: And then I'll go, but I'm taking my son. (exits. Ivan looks concerned)
Tony: Don't worry. [need help with this one]

Alex's Room: Alex skypes Lucia to tell her about what just happened. Ivan gets into camera view and Lucia asks whether something is wrong. Ivan tells her it's about her sister, as usual. Lucia tells him he will resolve it and cuts off the call. Ivan encourages Alex to tell him the details of what just happened with Maripaz.

Commercial Break We need room to breathe after this. Too bad it's not enough time for a shower.

McGuire Mansion, Tony's office: Ivan tells Tony that Alex overheard Maripaz making a date with someone over the phone. Tony asks whether he suspects that she has a lover because if they can prove that he can divorce her and get full custody of Alex. Ivan tells Tony about how cold Lucia was on the skype. When he leaves Tony's office, Tony calls his secretary to request that she find a private investigator.

Hotel Room: Merry Piece isn't so merry during a lovemaking session that looks like it belongs in a film noir rape scene. Only she is the perp as she is on top and grabby.

Merry Piece: You don't know how much I want to send them all to hell. (forcibly kissing him)
Bob: Why don't you get a divorce?
Merry Piece (grabbing his hair): Get a divorce? And end up with no money? I'm not crazy!
Bob: Whoa, whoa! Why not be prepared? He could be hiring a private investigator to find things out and divorce you, and take away your child. It's better, menos mas.
Merry Piece (grabbing him): No. It's the only thing I have in this damn place.
Bob: Listen to me, listen. I have nothing to lose, but you –
Merry Piece (looking loca): What are you saying? That you don't love me?
Bob: I love [quiero] you. Of course I love you! But...

McGuire Mansion, night: Ivan recalls his relationship with Lucia. Flashbacks to earlier stuff. Zzzzz.

McGuire Mansion. morning: The private eye has an unpleasant encounter with Bruno as he talks to Tony about following Maripaz to get something on her. He gives him a photo and explains he wants information as soon as possible. After he has Benito show him out he talks to Bruno, asking him what it was about this guy he didn't like. He hopes for fast results, but he's interested in finding out anything that will enable Ivan to file for divorce.

Hacienda Socorro, Lucia's bedroom: Camilo brings Lucia breakfast in bed. He tells her he is no longer comfortable working for the McGuire company and wants to resign.
.
LA Restaurant: Que casualidad. Mike Hammer is a buddy of Bob's and he is looking to bleed Tony for much dinero. Bob says MP is good in bed, but he isn't interested in risk. They seem to agree.

Hacienda Socorro, Lucia's bedroom: Lucia is OK with Camilo resigning from McGuire and Son but doesn't want him to return the land.

Casa Mondragon: Saul comes over on crutches with burn scars all over his neck (and presumably his chest). El Gordo had brought him over. At least his clothes are clean. He kisses up to Esther, but Judith rolls her eyes. She is many times smarter than her mother.

Commercial Break which includes various program promos.

McGuire Mansion: Alex and Ivan talk about el Mar de Cortes. Ivan assures Alex that Merry Piece will not do anything to Bruno [We're getting more worried by the minute]. Alex calls Lucia on Skype. It interrupts her thesis typing and she hangs up, but with a slightly guilty look on her face.

Rancho Socorro: Lucia and Carlota talk about this. Lucia is sure that Ivan logged in to Alex's account to try to talk to her. Carlota tells her it's time he knew that she is married to Camilo. She then tells her that Ivan and Maripaz have a marital relationship in the hope that this kills her feelings for him. Learn to love Camilo because he deserves it.

“God, why did you allow this?” she asks the empty room.
Porque el corazón no se manda, Abuela. Lo sabes muy bien.

McGuire Mansion: At the pool table, Tony talks on the phone to Hercule Poirot. Who tells him there is nothing to report of the nature he's looking for. He's standing in Bob's office. After he hangs up Bob indicates he's tired of Maripaz's drama and suggests that Sam Spade find her another lover. He expresses doubt that he could.

Rancho Socorro: Lucia wants the baby's baptism limited to the family. Lucrazia gives her the same grief as usual:

Lucrazia: I say we should have a reception.
Lucia: No, mother. I want the church ceremony and a family meal, and that's it. Nobody extra.
Carlota: I agree.
Lucrazia: But, this is an important event. If we don't invite anyone they'll all think we are bankrupt. Because ultimately all our stuff will be known by the masses.
Carlota: What do you expect to gain? After all, our condition isn't what it was.
Lucrazia: But neither are we out in the street. Give me one good reason why we shouldn't celebrate as God orders?
Lucia: Because I would prefer a more discreet event. Besides, I don't want people talking about my personal life and my daughter.
Lucrazia: Ah, I know. Your big fear is that Ivan will find something out.
Carlota: It will be a family party. Punto.
Lucrazia: Very well. Who will be the godparents?
Lucia: You, Grandma, Papa, and Señora Arcelia.
Carlota: That ordinary woman? [corriente]
Lucia: Mama, she is my husband's mother, my mother in law, and my daughter's grandmother. She may be humble but she isn't ordinary

The maid comes out to inform Lucia that the baby is awake. Lucia thanks her and exits with her.

Carlota (concerned expression): Now what's up?
Lucrazia (crying): None of my friends can come. They will all despise me because they'll think we've fallen into disgrace. In other days [this wasn't completely clear]. I'm sure everyone will think that Lucia was pregnant on her wedding day.
Carlota: This isn't important to me.
Lucrazia: But it is.
Carlota: Your father Teodoro and I tried to teach you other values but you always stuck with prejudice and gossip. The presumption of class accomplishes nothing. Look at Ivan and Camilo. They came from the lowest classes and now they are successful, respected, admired. How about Juan Jaime Mondragon? Daughter, you need to look this in the eye. Class is in the spirit, not in names or bank accounts.

Carlota, we love you.

Commercial Break starting with the Latin Grammy promo (again)

Iglesia: The baptism takes place. Little Perla is asleep through the whole thing. Camilo is the proud papa. The Lomielis are present, also David with Lucia's friend.

Casa Mondragon: Esther again goes to bat for Saul getting the surgeries that JJ refuses to pay for. She's only the stepmother but she's more of a parent to Saul than JJ ever was. She finally gets the nerve to tell JJ she is going to divorce him. As usual, he thinks she's crazy, saying her head is empty [hueca]; the new explanation is menopause or Alzheimer's. He's some piece of work.

McGuire offices: Camilo tells David he is going to resign. He's sure that Ivan would fire him otherwise once he knows that Camilo is now married to Lucia and he'd rather avoid the confrontation. David doesn't think Ivan would freak because he couldn't expect Lucia to put herself in mothballs, but Camilo is determined.

Scene ends with Camilo calling Tony to deliver his resignation and to recommend that David be appointed to replace him.

Vocabulary
corriente ordinary, run-of-the-mill
hueca hollow, empty
regañar to scold

Capitulo 69: As the Stomach Turns

My DVR cut out on the second hour and I couldn't get the first four scenes online. Please provide any missing details, if you can stand it. Gracias.

Nuevo

Casa McGuire Billiard Room: Alex runs in to tell Tony some good news about school.

Camilo's Office: Ivan calls to find out about why Camilo is resigning. At his insistence that office work isn't for him and that he is a country boy, Ivan doesn't go for it at first.

Lucia's Bedroom: She's working at her computer and is a bit annoyed when Camilo comes in to kiss her. We find out that they don't have much of a sex life and nothing has happened since Perla was born.

McGuire Mansion: Tony and Ivan talk about the trip to Alamos. Ivan doesn't want MP to go because she would only bring pain to Lucia.

Maripaz' Bedroom: She leaves an endless message for Bob about visiting her family and missing him. Get out of denial, Merry Piece; he's just not that into you. She calls Julie saying she wants investment advice from Bob, but Juliet's not believing this.

Casa Galvan: Camilo talks to his mother about his resignation and Ivan's impending arrival. He confides his fear that Lucia's feelings for Ivan will come rushing back when he gets there because Lucia isn't the sort of woman who easily forgets her feelings. She tries to be reassuring and instill some confidence in him. But her expression at the end of the scene tells us she's apprehensive.

Casa Lomieli: Antolin talks about work and earning enough money to buy a apartment or a house. Carolina doesn't trust JJ and doesn't like that Antolin works for him. Dirty money isn't a good thing. She's more right than she knows.

Juliet's Apartment: Bob comes home saying he had an important case. She tells him that Maripaz called to ask about investments [inversiónes] but she knows better. He has apparently cheated on her before and she threatens him with telling her father if he does it again. It looks like he works for her dad and his future could be hostage to his good behavior. Couldn't happen to a nicer guy.

Lucia's Bedroom: Camilo tells Lucia he's sorry and promises not to be jealous anymore. She tells him she loves him (querer) but she knows as well as we do that she doesn't love him as she loved Ivan. She talks about how a real father is the one who cares for a child and her feelings for him are more mature than what she felt for Ivan. He doesn't believe this any more than we do. We also see that Lucia is mostly lying still and thinking of Mexico (or Ivan) during sex. She has a faraway and guilty look afterward.

Rancho Socorro, in the field; morning: Lucrazia complains to a shirtless Camilo about not having her appropriate responsibilities for the crops. He tells her she can take care of the experimental plants if she consults him on insecticides and listens to what he tells her. She tells him OK, but the plants are delicate and it won't be her fault if anything goes wrong. Abdicating responsibilities as usual.

Park: Carolina sits on a bench when a black-clad JJ approaches. You have been warned.

JJ: Que tal, Señorita Carolina.
Carolina: Who is this?
JJ: Juan Jaime Mondragon. We met at Lucia and Camilos wedding. You don't remember?
Carolina: Well, there were so many people.
JJ (checking out her backside): May I sit here? (sits down)
Carolina: If you wish.

As JJ sits down we notice that Carolina pulls her legs further back in discomfort despite the face that he sits a few inches away from her. He stares into the general direction of her lady parts.

JJ : How is Gerardo?
Carolina: Well.
JJ: You have few words.
Carolina (laughing uncomfortably): Well, when I don't know someone I don't know how to talk to them.
JJ (checking her out again and making a gesture of cupping her face without actually touching it, then checking out her back or backside): What are you doing alone in this area away from home?
Carolina: Well, I didn't come here alone. [something about coming there once a week to meet a friend] I used to come here with Alex, Ivan's son.
JJ: Alex, and how is the boy?
Carolina: Well. I miss him very much.
JJ: I understand he was like a son to you and Gerardo, verdad? And we will miss children.
Carolina: Yes.
JJ: I have three children
Carolina: Yes, I know.
JJ: But they are a disaster. Of the three there isn't one [we assume he is referring to their worth]. I had bad luck with them. Despite attention and affection...
Carolina: How sorry that is... (the bastard is still checking out her arse)

Over on Wall Street the stock price of the Acme Barf Bag Company just skyrocketed.

Hacienda Socorro: Lucrazia – while nervously arranging knickknacks and photos – tries to explain the experimental plants to Carlota, complaining that Camilo is trying to prove she is incompetent. When Carlota tries to explain that Camilo is an expert and things are going well with him in charge, Lucrazia leaves the room. Lucia suggests that perhaps she and Camilo should move out because of the conflicts. Carlota doesn't want that; she wants to be near her great-granddaughter. By the gods, her necklace is a cheap version of what she gave to Lucia on her wedding day.

Commercial Break leading with promos for Familia and MQB.

Casa Lomieli: Rosa is apprehensive about Carolina's encounter with JJ and warns her that he is an evil man. Carolina thinks he is sad and lonely but Rosa is too smart to buy that. She also tells Carolina not to mention this encounter to Antolin because Antolin will do something about it she won't like. He has a bad rep because of what happens to people who get into his way. Carolina certainly is ignoring her earlier instincts about JJ.

McGuire Mansion, various rooms: Maripaz chews Bob out on the phone for his distance, finally begging him to be with her. He warns her that they need to be more discreet because her husband could suspect something. Little does she know that Benito overheard part of this and eavesdropped on the rest. He then tells Maria he heard Merry Piece call another man “mi amor” and that MP is cheating on Ivan. They try to decide how to proceed with this information.

Alex has won a math prize, but Tony reminds him that he didn't do so well in English. Alex gets affectionate with Bruno. When Ivan sends the boy up to wash his hands and pack his suitcase, he and Tony discuss the trip. Tony tells Ivan he needs to confiscate MP's passport. He is swapping his ticket for a flight in a couple of days. We hope he plans to take Bruno with him. When Ivan points out that Tony is going to Alamos to see Carlota, Tony tells him that their last conversation was less than amiable because Carlota was angry about what all this did to Lucia. Ivan points out that he is also suffering, that not a day or night goes by that he doesn't think of Lucia.

Ivan goes upstairs and finds that MP's room is a mess, but perseveres and finds the passport in the nightstand... next to a batch of casino chips, which he brings down to Tony. Tony explains that Philip Marlowe hasn't brought back any reports of lovers or clandestine casinos, but they both speculate on whether the gumshoe is hiding something. Tony points out that when they get back from Mexico they will be all over this.

Commercial Break Now you will need a new barf bag.

Hotel: Merry Piece goes up to her trysting place and Bob tells her about Sam Spade's activity... and Juliet's threat.

MP: Why did you want to meet me here again?
Bob: I have a friend who is a private investigator. He just confirmed my suspicions because your husband's father hired him to follow you.
MP (sitting on the bed and taking off her shades): What?
Bob: Don't worry. What luck that it's a friend of mine who informed me of this great little piece of gossip.
MP (starts to undress him): Then we don't have anything to worry about.
Bob (trying to fight back): Not now, but he can't feed McGuire false information forever. We can't go on much longer because my wife is starting to suspect. (puts his jacket back on) For all we know she could easily hire another detective.
MP (pulling his jacket down again): Juliet? I don't believe it because she's [something that probably means stupid or pathetic]
Bob: Maripaz, I'm sorry, but we have to cut this off.
MP: Are you serious? After everything we meant to each other?
Bob: I have a career, Maripaz, and hopes. I don't want for any reason – (she kisses him forcefully and he pulls away)
MP: I'm not giving you up. You please me. (turns him around and forces him back onto the bed. He relieves himself of the jacket and she straddles him) You are the only good thing that's happened to me in this damned city. Let's forget about these problems and enjoy ourselves.

He fights back to sit up and she slaps his face lightly with both hands as she tackles him.

Hacienda Socorro: Lucia and Carlota talk in the Portrait Room. Carlota tells Lucia that Ivan will arrive in a day or so. Lucia doesn't want to see him; she admits she still loves Ivan as she did before. Carlota reminds her that Ivan has a marital relationship with Merry Piece and that Lucia is married to Camilo, who loves her. Maripaz married Ivan for money and Lucia married Camilo out of affection. That is the difference between them. Maripaz is evil and it is a weak man who has sexual relations with a woman that perverse.

Commercial Break

Lucia's Bedroom, night: Camilo confides in her about the fight that forced Ivan to leave Mexico. He and Antolin just happened to get there. We get a flashback of the scene and Antolin opening his switchblade knife and stabbing the guy in the back Camilo punched another one out.. Neither Ivan nor he killed the guy and Lucia correctly concludes that it was Antolin who did it but wouldn't admit to it. Camilo took the heat, saying he killed this guy defending Ivan. He encouraged Ivan to get out of Mexico and Camilo kept quiet to protect Antolin. There was no investigation. He has never felt right about any of this. Lucia looks worried.

McGuire Mansion: Ivan packs for the trip and locks up MP's passport. He stops in her room to tell her they're leaving and doesn't she want to say goodbye to her son? She says “To hell with them and that dog, too.” We notice that there is a liquor bottle and a glass on the nightstand.

The Wicked Witch of the West has spoken as she turns away and goes back to sleep. Torches and pitchforks, anyone?

Rancho Socorro: Lucia and the baby visit Camilo in the field. They sit down to lunch after looking at the perfect field of whatever crop. They're under an overhead vine rack Camilo built for shade so Lucia and the baby can visit him at work.

Commercial Break

Rancho Socorro: Lucia explains that her thesis is going well. All is well until she tells Camilo that Ivan will be arriving soon. She asks him not to bring Ivan to the ranch. He realizes she still loves him.

Ag Ass Office, outside: Lucrazia bumps into Antolin. It almost looks like she is about to flirt with him, but she wants to make sure that JJ doesn't find out about his role in the delivery of the blackmail money. He assures her that she doesn't need to worry because they're family since Camilo is married to Lucia. Family is sacred to him. She still looks apprehensive as he departs.

McGuire Mansion: Tony bids hasta la vista to Ivan and Alex. He has Bruno by his side. Alex tells Bruno to stay away from Maripaz.

That's three comments about Bruno's safety. I don't like this.

Bar: Camilo and Antolin talk about Ivan's impending arrival and Camilo's worry. He almost tells Antolin that he married her knowing that she was pregnant by another man, but instead says he knew she loved someone else. He asks Antolin to find out what he can about Ivan's intentions. Antolin tries to get him not to worry. Ivan married Maripaz for Alex and he's not likely to try to take Perla away from Lucia.

Avances:
Secretos y mentiras as Tony meets baby Perla and finds out that Lucia and Camilo are married. Bruno is not in that scene.

And we have to wait until Monday to find out. Rats.

Comments:
Sorry I couldn't post this earlier for you Urban. Luckily, I think we have the whole rest of the week and weekend to read and comment on your double header since tonight is the Grammys and tomorrow is futbol.

Your first half is wonderful and very detailed for having done two of them! Thanks so much amiga.

What a drag Lucia is! That's all I could think last night. She couldn't even muster up much joy for her beautiful baby, much less the hunk in her bed.

I think the baby was born after 6 months of marriage (really an 8 month baby), which made it even MORE suspicious to everyone that a 6 month premie was SO big and needed NO extra medical care. No one is being fooled. They might as well just admit to everyone that it's Ivan's but they don't want him to know, just like they don't want him to know about the marriage. Even Camilo was amazed that no one had spilled those beans yet.

I felt the worse for Alex. These adults are doing him such a diservice. I understand Lucia not wanting to see/speak to Ivan, but I think it's cruel of her to limit her time speaking to Alex because of that. One of the promises she made to convince him to go to the States was that she would be on Skype with him whenever he needed. Lie! Anto and Gerry promised they would visit him with Caro. Lie! And now they're not even taking him back to Alamos for summer vacation. This just sucks on all levels for the poor kid.

More later once you have more up.

Vivi, did you not get the second part? I sent it at 10:45 this morning.

My DVR screwed up and I had to find the second half online. I almost wish I could watch the whole series online because my TV picture is so dark I don't see the grey in Carlota's hair.

You're right; nobody is fooled. Everyone realizes that Perla is Ivan's daughter. Something needs to happen in the next six months of the characters' lives or Camilo will attempt to make Lucia pregnant. Which would not be to her liking because of her career if for no other reason.

As to the broken promises to Alex, I think all these people are afraid of telling him that Lucia is married.

Just went back to look. I've got it! Will post now. Thanks Urban!

Thank you!

UA, thank you for your detail recap; I fell asleep and didn’t wake up until mid-way through the first part.

Ivan had no right to say or do anything about Lucia getting married; he could have cried and skulked all he wants and lamented OH ME! OH ME! He still couldn’t have the right to reproach her of anything. However, by everyone lying and omitting on telling him; make the guilt on them not him; and he now earned the right to reproach them for keeping mum. Why keep quiet if you’re not doing anything wrong? And I’m not at all swayed by Lucia’s and Camilo’s explanation for not telling.

Vivi in DC, I completely agree with you on how all the adults back in Alamos tried to keep their distance from Alex. The poor kid kept his promise; he reached out to them every chance he got, but they can’t do the same; they lied to him and kept him at arms’ length.

Also, don’t get me started on Lucia. I’ve never felt her emanating any warmth and passion towards Ivan. I’ve always felt that he was the one in love and not her. Now, she’s doing the same to Camilo – granted, I don’t like Camilo on the ground that he was never a good friend to Ivan—he’s pouring his heart into the relationship; but I’ve got nothing from Lucia; even her pining for Ivan leaves me cold.

Myo-

Excellent recap, UA. I'm amazed that you got so much detail and humor into a double-header. Great title, too. I'm a little upset I didn't invest heavily in Acme Barf Bags last week.

Lucia was being a drip, but I can see why she isn't more enthusiastic about Camilo. He's protective and attentive, but in my opinion he's also leaning strongly toward possessive and smothering. The way he says MY wife, MY daughter, sleeps wrapped around Lucia like a straitjacket, and has jealous fits when Ivan is mentioned don't bode well. Plus, when she was intensely focused on her thesis and said "wait a minute" and he just started talking anyway...that bugs me.

I got a kick out of Carlota asking God why he allowed this. The way I remember it, Carlota, YOU allowed it. Maripaz would be in jail and everyone else living happily ever after if Carlota had just done the right thing at the critical time.

I love Bob. He's awful, but Augustin Arana is so funny, especially with his random lines in English.

Clearly Tony doesn't watch enough detective shows. He should know to always hire two detectives who don't like each other to do the same investigation.

I hope Lucia is writing her Child Psychology thesis on how thoroughly they've all screwed over Alex. Poor kid.

I agree that she doesn't seem to have much passion for anyone or anything. She just goes along with whatever is presented to her. I think breaking up with Saul is the only thing she's taken the initiative to do on her own, but why was she even engaged to him in the first place? Because he was there and asked/demanded it, I guess.

Well done, UA! Double headers are doozies and you handled this marvelously! Perfect amount of detail with a delicious dash of snark!

I was almost on team Camilo last night. He is clearly in love with the child, tender with Lucia and attentive. Then he started getting jealous and being possessive. He knew what he was getting into when he married her.

He is better looking than Ivan in my opinion.

Now when is Antolin going to go shirtless????

Lucia was engaged to Saul by parental decree. He said a long time ago that she was the only "decent" girl of his class and this must have had some vicariousness in it for Lucrazia and Juan Jeil-Me. She would have been more miserable married to him with JJ for a suegro.

Lucia is a one-man woman but didn't truly realize it until marrying Camilo. This is only going to get seriously ugly when they encounter Ivan, which is inevitable.

Carlota sees Lucia as a younger version of herself. She had the good fortune to fall in love with the man she married. However, the one who made her pregnant was no Ivan.

I don't think much of Lucía's character, I guess I'll blame it on the director, but she is so wooden, no spark at all. I do think she is very pretty, not with the perfect looks like Angelica Boyer, which I do not like.

In this TN she is married to a very caring good man that loves her hija, accept it woman, he ain't bad.
I think in the real world you would accept the life you made for yourself.

Variopinta

What got me the most about this episode was JJ's predatory pursuit of Carolina. I seriously wanted to take a shower right after that scene ended. This is making me wonder if Antolin will kill JJ before this is over.

I agree, UA. I was also seriously skeeved after that scene. *shudder* Very gross.

ITA Urban and Sara. We've already had one rape in this tn. We sure as heck better not have another. But if JJ dares touch Caro, he WILL be a dead man. Anto will kill him in the most painful way possible. I'm hoping it stops with just the leering and with a good beatdown or takedown (Anto has plenty of dirt on him) by Anto.

As for Camilo and Lucia, I really liked much of what they showed of Camilo during these episodes-- except the crazy jealousy. Like you guys said, he knew what he was getting into when he married Lucia. He knew she was in love with someone else (the guy she has loved since she was a little girl). He can't get all crazy jealous and possesive now. This will be his downfall.

But Lucia also annoyed me. If you're going to decide to marry a man, then put your all into it. How awful for Camilo to have to beg his wife to make love to him, and then have her practically lie still the entire time.

The two of them are so alike, and I think we have spoken about this before. They are both loyal to family, to the point where they will cover up the crimes their family members have committed, and sacrifice Ivan in the process. They are both really smart and capable in their professional fields. They are both also cowards, who prefer to hide the truth rather than confront it head on.

I can see why they were drawn to each other. Unfortunately for Camilo, Lucia met Ivan first. Otherwise, I think they would have had a normal, happy relationship.

Vivi, I think that's possible. If Ivan hadn't been in the picture or if he had married Merry Piece when she became pregnant Lucia could have been happy with Camilo.

Who entered a bad marriage sometime shortly after that.

Of course Merry Piece would have made Ivan miserable then, too. She is so non-maternal and would have neglected Alex but might not have been cruel to him.

El Gordo was looking at Judith kind of funny too. I hope he doesn't get any ideas to take Judith.

By the gods, I forgot a line I wanted to add to the scene where Bruno defended Alex. Does anyone remember the scene in Elmer Gantry when Lulu talks about her father? I wonder if our Merry Piece ever saw it.

"Got a note from him last Christmas. It said 'Daughter, read 1Kings 21:23.' I looked it up. It said "And the dogs in the street shall eat Jezebel.'"

UA, thanks for the great double.

And again thanks to Vivi, our official "post" master.

I would think that Alex is old enough to decide where he wants to live if asked by a US judge. Just leave MP out of the loop. MP is missing what could be the joy of her life - what a putz.

Camilo is about to go to the dark side. He should have thought about the consequences before.

JJ is vile. I hope Caro never goes out alone again - another putz.

I loved the bibical reference!

Rosemary

Variopinta, I totally agree with you about Sandra Echeverria. She is beautiful but I don't think much of her acting abilities. I saw her in El Clon and she was just as boring and lifeless. She was also supposed to be madly in love but lacked real emotion. Funny in that TN her husband was also much hotter than the one she longed for.
If I was Lucia I would not have married Camilo, at least not so quickly. I may haves dated him to see how things developed, but if I did marry him I would try to make things work. He is trying very hard and I think she gave up already.

Great job, Urban! Thank you! Plenty of humor to keep this looooong double episode moving along. I especially liked all the old-style PI names for the crooked Sam Spade (who doesn't realize that Tony is on to him.)

I'm worried about Bruno too.

Things I liked in this episode:

The delicious irony of bad boy Antolín's moral repugnance at Juan Jaime's scams. He has a kind of Robin Hood mentality: It's ok to rob from the rich (like the Curiel women) but not from the hard-working guys in the gremio.

Uber-snob Esther's exaggerated politeness to "señor Gordo" as Judith stands by silently and rolls her eyes.

Camilo's having enough trust in Lucía to confide his torment to her -- his guilt over protecting Antolín at Iván's expense years ago. (And I liked that Lucía listened. She didn't judge; she didn't rush in with false reassurances; she just listened -- I guess she learned SOMETHING in shrink school.)

By the way, Agustín Arana may be the king of sleaze but I loved him as a good guy in "Piel de Otoño".

Chuchi, I agree with you about SE (Lucia's) acting ability. I too saw her in El Clon and was not impressed.

Rosemary

I was amused that El Gordo cleaned up to meet Esther and Judith. In all his previous appearances I was tempted to pull out a scented handkerchief.

Too bad there wasn't a witness to JJ's disgusting behavior in the park who would tell Esther. But then she might not believe it.

Camilo was holding that secret inside too long.

Ivan needs a new PI. I would recommend he hire a female one.

Thanks, UA for the excellent recap. I watched bits of it, but I had to stop when JJ started sleazing all over Caro. Juan Ferrar is just too good at playing the sleaze. I have been very impressed with Juan Ferrar's portrayal of the amoral, corrupt but complex Jorge Mancera In Pasión.

So Lucia is not really into her baby either? Usually TN mothers are totally devoted to their babies and are very happy with them, even if they were the victim of rape or sexual harassment.

Audrey

Audrey- It's not exactly that she's not into the baby. But instead of just being lost in that happy moment after the birth, like Camilo was, she was obviously thinking about Ivan and getting all sad and weepy about it. I have no doubt she loves Perla, but Perla seems to also be a sad memory of Ivan for Lucia. Usually in tns, no matter how badly things ended with the galan, the heroine is head over heels gaga about the baby and nothing else matters. This may actually be more realistic (what do I know; I've never had a baby), but it is unusual for a tn.

Sandra is beautiful to look at. I didn't watch El Clon, but I did often read the recaps and looked at the pictures the recappers posted. I didn't realize that folks thought she was a rather emotionless/flat actress there too. Perhaps she has not yet chosen the right role. Lucia is written as a rather weak person, but I do think it could be acted with a bit more passion.

I don't think Fuerza is on tonight, it looks like fútbol, but better ck, you can never trust the TV listings. Looks like Familía is a go though.

I'm tired of grumpy Lucía. Iván, get a nice LA girl, she would probably be fun.

Variopinta

Sandra Echevarria is certainly easy on the eyes, but at least here she's far and away the least...lively?...of the main cast. Almost the flip side of Laisha Wilkins, who is all but inhaling the scenery (in a good if love-to-hate way) as Maripaz. At least right now Lucia has an excuse to be distant and a little chilly, but still...

As an aside: why the heck didn't we get to see David and Lucia's friend, Berenice, getting together? After all the early focus on him? Did I miss the wrong episode?

As for J3 and Carolina...I'm glad I missed him actually sleazing up on her, because ew. I suppose Antolin can wash and wax his car before hitting him with it...

I only saw the second half of El Clon, but I enjoyed Sandra's performance and I remember a very feisty young woman standing up to the controlling behavior of her husband Saíd and going behind his back with numerous gutsy machinations of her own. She was immature, even ambivalent/self-contradictory at times, but never passive!

My husband appreciated her belly dancing and was particularly impressed with her large snake handling while dancing!

Yeah - Vivi - that's what is noteworthy to me is that by TN convention Lucía should be gaga over her daughter, at least as some sort of consolation prize.

Audrey

Urban, sorry to post so late, I have been insanely busy lately and can't post everyday, thanks to all the recappers; and commenters have been great, too.
I love your recaps Urban, you always include vocabulary that helps a lot.
ITA Vivi, Lucia has been kind of a drag, not happy with Camilo who loves her and her baby unconditionally, probably much as Teodoro loved Carlota, right? Perhaps Sandra the actress is a good girl who just can't make love with a stranger on camera. I have always wondered how actors do it anyway.
Renata770-I keep falling asleep during the show, too.
Julia-I think Bob is funny, too. Did anyone see how MP literally threw Bob accross the room to the bed? I couldn't believe it.

I am going to guess that by end of next week we're going to start hearing "Ultimas Semanas" on this story. Here is an appropriate place to begin speculating on our villains' fates.

Include with your comments.

I'd like to see Merry Piece in prison for the hit-and-run after Juliet throws acid in her face for her tryst with Bob. However, I suspect she will kidnap Alex, have a stand-off with the police, and end up dead.

JJ needs to end up locked up in an asylum for dementia, as he is so fond of accusing others of madness.

El Gordo will die; Antolin will kill him because he knows too much.

Word verification: misonsin, a corruption of the French "mis en scène" to denote a story designed on the sins of the characters.

What about Saul's fate Urban? Although he's already started to pay.

I just posted this on the CME line:

Folks have been asking what will replace CME and Fuerza when they wrap up the end of next month. I found this about Uni's plans: "Aun no se definen los horarios en las cuales estas dos telenovelas entraran al aire, pero se puede deducir que despues de Cuando Me Enamoro entraria La Que No Podia Amar y despues de La Fuerza del Destino entraria El Talisman."

I am wondering whether Antolin will kill Saul. He's already tried once. I would prefer to see him straighten up and fly right. This is conditional on him not being Lucia's rapist.

If he is, send him to the slammer, where he would get slammed.

Urban, great recap!

I think I watched these episodes. I have to say, out of Zepeda or Soto I prefer Zepeda but his character isn't at all atractive now. Soto is too metrosexual for me, although Camilo isn't but Camilo has the issue of being too possesive and weak.

By the way Urban, I think you should pitch your Dark Shadows idea to Televisa. This week TV Azteca started airing a novela based on Grey's Anatomy. It's working really well so far, and I really like the Mexican Meredith. It's interesting because it seems now that some hollywood stars are also trying to make shows from Latin American telenovelas.

Is that the Columbian novela A Corazon Abierto starring the super galán Rafael Novoa? If so, that novela is awesome. It was my first novela, and I don't know how I got through it with the Columbian accents. Spanish captions were indispensable. I actually realized it was a remake of Grey's Anatomy right away, because too many of the opening scenes were identical. I had been a pretty faithful watcher of the original, and I ended up thinking that the Columbian version was even better, including the actors.

Another interesting factoid is that the same creator/producer was the original creator of the Betty La Fea novela which was remade a huge number of times all over the world (12, 20?) including Ugly Betty. So now he tries out adapting US series to novelas. Desperate Housewives remake didn't work out so well for various reasons, but the Grey's Anatomy remake was a huge hit. They even did a sequel (the first only used the first few seasons of the original).

Anyway, if anyone hasn't seen A Corazon Abierto, it's awesome, and Rafael Novoa is right up there with your favorite Mexican TN galáns. In fact, isn't he listed for one of the upcoming Univisión TNs?

Audrey

FYI, A Corazón Abierto was shown on Telemundo starting May 2010. Looks like it was also shown on TV Azteca starting July 2010.

There might be a problem with La Que No Podia Amar, since Jorge Salinas has been so ill, unless they get a replacement.

Variopinta

I see now that Rafael will star in Talisman opposite Blanca Soto. Aaron Diaz is playing one of the villains. He already has kind of a demonic look LOL!

This is a collaboration between Univisión and Venevision, so I guess the US will have one of the first showings.

Audrey

Audrey: Actually, this is a Mexican version. Disney is producing both though, the Colombian one with Novoa (he is so HOT!) with RCN and the Mexican one with TvAzteca.

I've seen bits and pieces of the two, I think Novoa is my favorite McDreamy, the Mexican Meredith though is my favorite but Sandra Oh is the best Cristina and nobody comes close to her. haha.

Variopinta: Jorge Salinas is still in La Que No Podía Amar, they shot some scenes with him at the hospital he was staying in the meantime and he is out now and ready to work again.

Jarocha

I heard a rumor that Jorge Salinas is going over to the dark side, which I would have very mixed feelings about.

At any rate, I hope Familia gets moved to 7PM when the two new ones come in so that I can blog one of them. Hopefully I will have a paycheck job before January so 7PM would be too early for me.

OK, Jarocha, I watched the trailer link you posted, and see that it is a Mexican version of A Corazón Abierto. It fooled me at first because they kept the name the same.

I agree that the young woman playing Meredith/Maria Alejandra was awesome. My husband loved her and even ended up downloading some of her songs. The supporting cast was amazing as well. I really enjoyed the Columbian Cristina, but she talked so fast and used so much slang she was the toughest to understand by far. I remember thinking at the time "how can anybody talk that fast?"

They made several changes in the adaptation, but they really worked. It was hilarious and wonderfully dramatic at the same time.

It'll be fascinating to see how Novoa does in Talisman. I loved him in A Corazón Abierto, but I loved him even more in Pura Sangre, which was later remade into the Mexican version Mañana Es Para Siempre.

Audrey

Oh, I see you were talking about the Mexican Meredith. Got confused there..... LOL!

Fates:

Ivan: realizes Lucia isn't worth the pain, stays in L.A. with Alex & Tony, shares custody of Perla with Lucia. Moves Gerardo to the U.S. & gives him a job.

Lucia/Camilo: stay toghether with Perla.

JJ: dies in diabetic coma

Saul, Gordo: die

Maripaz: dies needing liver transplant b/c of cirrosis of the liver. Eyes donated to Carolina.

Ester: broke & alone b/c JJ's money was willed to his grandchildren {Alex, Lichita, Perla}

Judith: moves to Mexico, becomes interior designer

David: new head of Mondragon Empire

Lucrazia: gets it on w/ranch worker, is busted by the town getting it on with ranch worker, decides she doesn't care, she's getting her cougar on

Anon207, I love your list, especially Lucrazy's fate.

Rosemary

"I heard a rumor that Jorge Salinas is going over to the dark side, which I would have very mixed feelings about."

What do you mea UA?

Audrey: I'm wondering too about Talisman, I heard Karyme Lozano is doing a come back in it.

Jarocha

That he will be the villain instead of the hero.

Thanks so much for your recap UA.

ITA that poor Alex is truly getting the short end of the stick. I know the adults in this TN have been bad but watching him suffer is sad.

And though Bob is a sleazy, I do love Augustin Arana!

I hope Ivan and Tony know that Alex could testify in the US custody hearing. That sweet kid deserves better.

And if Tony left Bruno home on his trip to Alamos I hope Benito is there to protect him.

UA: I don't think he is either. His character has very negative traits and then we discover he also has positive ones too. But I think that (besides some supporting characteres) its hard to put the characteres in that story in a box as totally good or totally bad, the story doesn't really protray them that way, even our heroine.

I guess you can say they mostly behave in the right way or they mostly behave in the wrong way and then you decide for yourself wether they are good or bad due to what you perceive onscreen, but it is very subjective and not everybody might agree with you.

Jarocha

To sum it up: Most characteres in La Que No Podía Amar are morally ambiguous.

They actually start like cartoon characteres (with the overacting and all, since the director is Salvador Garcini from Triunfo del Amor) and then after a while they became tridimentional. I don't know if that was planned as a way to introduce the story and then go in depht into it or if they modified the style because they didn't like the begining (I didn't) but I think it worked. LQNPA is now doing really well over here.

Jarocha

I found this on Jorge Salinas

http://www.oem.com.mx/elsoldemexico/notas/n2305539.htm

He had a pulmonary embolism & apparently left the hospital yesterday.

Variopinta

Gracias. I know we're not supposed to gossip here but I hope this drives him to give up smoking.

I adore him and will likely volunteer for his novela.
