La Que No Podia Amar #6 Lunes 1/9/12 La Que No Podia Cambiar
Hacienda Montero, terrace: Consuelo lays the breakfast table; Rogelio pulls out a chair for Ana Paula and speaks with pride when talking about the ranch, which has been in his family for years. Sin-thia arrives and with a display of completely false innocence dismisses Ana Paula to speak privately with her brother. She could, of course, have waited until later when Ana Paula wouldn't have had to get up to depart on her crutches, but she is clearly demonstrating that she is the mistress of the house. This is not lost on Rogelio, who asks what it is that could not be said before the lovely nurse. Sin-thia tells him that Vainessa spoke of her impending divorce and that she thinks Vainessa is doing this for him. She is curiously happy about this.
Hacienda Montero: The cattle cross the lawn as Sin-thia (or Lady Chatterley) goes to her room and Efrain (Oliver Mellors) enters through the window.. He has apparently finished his chores and is looking for the private rewards of marriage without the public legal entanglement she will continue to deny him. She is not liking the smell of the stables and orders him to disrobe and bathe. He suggests they bathe together, but in the knowledge that Rogelio is not on the premises, he tackles her onto the bed and they enter into their dalliance.

I feel sorry for Estaban, Vainessa's husband but he will be better off without her. I like the actor that plays Estaban. I saw him last in LVO as Carlos.
I wonder what Bruno and Vainessa are plotting? Revenge against Rohell? Are they using Sin-thia in their plot?
Rohell is starting to show his human side, quelle surpris. It is better than the whipping side of him. I am not a fan of his yet. This actor, Jorge Salinas is really good. I have never seen him in anything before. I am glad that Ana Paula is able to change him somewhat, hopefully the changes stick. And she really needs to take that whip away from him.
Thanks for providing such an excellent and detailed recap. I really enjoyed reading this with my morning coffee.
I am not yet connecting with this TN.It isn't the acting, which is OK, or the setting (Chiapas), which I find interesting as it is a place I have never visited. I have a problem with the story, specifically with the character of Rogelio.
It seems a cheap device to use Rogelio's status as a paraplegic to explain and/or semi-excuse his problem with rage and power. It is very sad that he has lost the use of his legs. Adjusting to that fact and the attendant frustration of limited mobility is something he will spend the rest of his life working with, I suppose. But Rogelio needs much more than the love of a good woman to change his behavior. As Ana Paula herself said, he needs to become a better person for himself.
First and foremost Rogelio would have to fundamentally recognize his rageful acting-out as wrong. Last night the character told us that he would rather be feared than thought a fool. These are a limited set of options for personal interactions—terrify others or be despised. Both perspectives are based in a basic self-doubt that has nothing to do with accident or injury and represent the character's feelings about himself and his power (potency) in the world.
Rogelio needs to learn to RELATE to his world, not just manipulate it.
Ana Paula, however sunny, spunky and hardworking cannot change Rogelio's world view. He would have to self-improve and maybe use teh idea of pleasing her as a motivation along the way.
As to his physical violence with Bruno the other day, it is totally repugnant to me. There is no excuse for this kind of power-over violent display. I shuddered when watching it.
If Rogelio's boundaries are so bad that he will beat a man one day and eat cake with him the next, something is truly off in his character—something that cannot be resolved by a new set of dimples, however charming these may be.
EJ
I actually used this to relax last night right after recapping a two hour episode of Familia! Funny what can count as relaxation, I think it was just the change of theme and not needing to be typing while watching that gave me relief.
Madelaine, I am enjoying the unveiling of the inner RoHell. Salinas' face is so incredibly expressive. But I agree with you and Elna that I cannot stomach the violence scenes. I hope they don't bring more of them in the future.
Elna June, I really appreciate your thoughtful analysis of RoHell in particular but also Ana Paula who may begin to think she has more power than she actually has to effect change in a fundametally flawed man. The triple galan scenes will present interesting developments since RoHell will probably loose his composure in the face of competition. It will be intresting to see how the presence of the very self-centered Vanesa (Vain-essa is so true) but RoHell may succumb to her charms and his old feelings for her.
I enjoy Cinthia's romping in the prison antics with the stable scented foreman when she can't figure out how to escape the hacienda since she would lose everything. She really needs to find herself, she doesn't know how to do anything practical except ride, act out her class superiority, and now to confound RoHell in his quest for a relationship. She will help ruin his future, as if he needed help.
I think that we all know that it's going to take more than just one "challenge" from a pretty, spirited nurse to change Rohell's violent temper and general buttheadedness. But at least we have a start—a motivation for him to try to change his outlook. He wants to impress the spunky nurse. I think during the conversation in his office (where she was talking about caring for her ailing mother) he got more of an idea of the strength & substance behind Ana Paula—she's known suffering and grief, and she'll stick around and care for loved ones when things are down. Compare her to the vain and selfish Vainessa and we see who comes out ahead.
But I also agree that Ana Paula's sunny attitude and dimples are not going to be enough to "fix" what is wrong with Rohell. He's older and harder and has been getting his own way for a long while. He's never had to develop his impulse control when it comes to reigning in his temper, and that kind of change is not going to happen overnight! And I agree, I'm already heartily sick of that darn whip and disturbed by the whipping scenes. In a way I don't think they "fit" Rohell as he is most of the rest of the time (he's just really grouchy and says buttheaded things) but what do I know? I'm not a writer for this show. I guess they want us to see that he is very violent and nasty and as others have observed, this will make his inevitable redemption in the end all the more dramatic.
WOW, that Elsa (wife of the long-suffering Federico) is a piece of work! Her big starey poppy eyes and that really inappropriate outfit. It's not like the woman is unattractive or has a bad figure for her age, but she makes herself look so bad wearing outfits like that! And her crazy jealousy—you can tell has worn out poor Federico a long time ago.
I was amused at the scene at the terrace breakfast. Rogelio makes a production of removing his hat (which I think threw Sinthia for a loop—how can she miss the significance of this?). I also thought it was funny how Sinthia was so elated to be eating out at the terrace, but how her face fell when she discovered it was the mere servant who might have been the reason behind it. If I were Sinthia, I'd just be so grateful that my butthead of a brother was lightening up a bit, that I wouldn't care what prompted it, and in this case, there's nothing fundamentally *wrong* about a nurse helping her patient develop a healthier/better attitude. I can't feel sorry for Sinthia since she's such a terrible, classist snob.
One small addition: When Rohell gives Ana Paula money at the restaurant, he says it's so she can get more ingredients to make more of that delicious cake. I never could understand what he said when I first watched the episode (without CCs) but it makes sense now why she wouldn't hesitate to take the money.
I'm really glad to find out (thanks UA) that Rogelio told AP not to wear those nurses uniforms that she must have picked up at a sex shop. It must be hard to think about his therapy staring at her bosom.
Is Margarito yelling all the time? No wonder he bugged Rogelio. They may have told him to so he could be heard above the adults, but he doesn't seem like a timid actor so it shouldn't be a problem.
Elsa! Good god. I fully expect her music to change to the wicked witch theme. Have we found out the name yet of AP's mom to see if she's the one that Frederico had the affair with?
And finally, it seems like Rogelio does get the problems with his behavior. He knows he's a jerk and is trying to change, but I'm sure we haven't seem the last of that whip. Maybe Prozac would hlep.
Kelly
Elna June- Great analysis!
AP mentioned that her mom was a secetary, right before the scene with Vainessa's parents arguing about the secretary he had an affair with long ago. We know from Tia MentiRosa talking to herself that AP has a different father than her brother. BINGO! I think we now know why AP and Vainessa bear such a resemblance. They're sisters! Not spoiler, just speculation. But I think the writers were giving us BIG honking clues about it.
Aribeth sent me a message where she told me to tell you that she had also enjoyed your and Jardinera's recaps. She is having problems posting in the blogger but she is trying to fix them to be able to join us in the discussion.
So we are finally done (pretty quickly) with the tight nurse outfit. Just at the right time for Rogelio to appreciate pretty dimpled Ana Paula.
I agree that she alone can't make him change but I don't think his problems come solely from being in a wheelchair, it has to do with the kind of education he received growing up about what being him meant and how ending up in a wheelchair distroyed those illusions. He and Cinthia have issues when it comes to their origins and the kind of power they are supposed to have.
Esteban is a hottie and Vanesa is nuts for not realizing what she has.
Jarocha
Kelly
Vivi, I thought the same thing about Vainess and AP being half-sisters - let the games begin.
Bruno is getting more sinister by the day. AP better run as fast as she can.
I wanted to reach into the TV the last couple of days to adjust AP's crutches. Thank goodness she has moved on to a cane, now I can stop obsessing about that little detail.
Rosemary
Kelly
Hmmm, my guess is Bruno knows Vainessa and Ana Paula are half-sisters and is using this as part of his plot against Rogelio. But wouldn't Tia Rose know the identity of Ana Paula's father since she thought-bubbled that Miguel and Ana Paula don't have the same father? How could Tia Rose miss an opportunity to make $$$ with this?
Esteban with his premature gray and bedroom eyes is so fine. He seems like a nice guy, who should do himself a favor and let Vainessa dump him.
Since Vainessa and her dad didn't stick around a second after Rogelio's accident, how would they know whether or not he can have kids? It's not like they talked to his doctors.
So Vainessa (I love that) wants to divorce Estaban because she still loves Rog. Does she really love him though or is it guilt for dumping him when he became paralyzed.
I too wonder what Bruna and Cinthia are up to in regards to their schemes for Rog.
The only character so far that I've emotionally committed to so far is Cinthia. She makes no secret of what she is and what she wants. I also like the brother sister relationship between her and Rogelio.
So far, Rogelio really annoys me. He seems to realize what a cruel, graceless jerk he is and yet persists in treating those around him miserably. I hope before this is all over someone makes him eat that quirt.
Margarito proudly announced that he washed the eggs... I thought that you're not supposed to wash eggs.
It's really starting to bug me seeing those poor doves cooped up in that little cage. Ana Paula should get a dog instead.
Carlos
I assume that Bruno would like to see Vanessa back together again with Rogelio to free up AP for himself, and to distract Rogelio.
Elsa, Federico's wife is scary looking. She has a certain bug-eyed crazy look about her. She will be trouble, I guarantee it.
I also predict that when the time Gustavo and AP see each other, it will be in front of Rogelio, and Rogelio will become very difficult again when he sees the sparks fly. Yes, AP now has three men in love with her. I'm not sure I would want to be in her shoes.
When wild eyed Elsa came on the scene, I thought, what manicomio did she just escape from?
Rogelio, I'm sure was a nice guy before his accident, so he can get back to his prior self with the help of Ana Paula.
There is sth more to the Margarito story I think. Will his parents or at least mother be among our present characters, I'm thinking Cintia.
so far, so good on this TN
"Maria then hands her the symbol of the chateleine, the enormous ring of keys. Sin-thia looks at it as though it were the keys to her own prison." Nice observation.
"Dany, no silly young girl, quickly covered the offending sight with her steno pad" Well at least she was aware that the sight might possibly offend. The way most TN ladies prance around flaunting their assets unnerves me.
It's necessary to wash eggs because of where they come from. Birds' eggs are delivered through the same route as their guano.
Bruno is most likely plotting revenge for the loss of his father's lands (which I am guessing were forfeited for debt) and Vainessa is looking to grab Rogelio's fortune -- as he is the richest man in the area -- because he is not renewing the contract with her father.
I think the speculation that Vainessa and Ana Paula are half sisters is on the money; there has to be a reason they resemble each other beyond the fact that this resemblance gets to Rogelio. I'm still wondering if they're related off camera.
Rogelio's anger management problems are definitely about the accident and the disability. If there is an insecurity issue that relates back to his parents we still haven't been told. It would be interesting to know what his parents were like and whether that makes any difference.
I would like to add at this point that the fact that he has feeling in his legs not only means that he will get out of that wheelchair it means that he is in it in order to push Vainessa out of his life. He may have known on some subconscious level that she is bad news and the paralysis is more psychological than physical.
Vivi-I *finally* got around to re-watching the scene in which Tia mentiRosa mentions the paternity of the two. I went back and fixed it in my recap for future readers: "no doubt they resemble their respective fathers." Boy the CCs messed that one up! lol
There are several potential catfights in the making; gentlemen are well advised to tune in.
Esteban will be well rid of Vainessa, who is likely to become a copy of her mother in another 30 years.
EJ - great analysis of crazy Rohell and ITA with you.
Vivi - so glad you are on our team with guesses about future plot lines. The writers have given us clues and your speculation seems spot on.
Now back to the episode, the hints that Vanesa and Ana Paula might be in fact sisters were not precisely subtle, so I'm guessing it's not a coincidence that they have similar looks. We'll see how could Ana Paula benefit from this, apart from having a father for the first time in her life. He should give her valuable advice, if they'll ever find out about each other.
I don't like it at all how they treat Rogelio's paralysis. I hope the writer doesn't think that all the incapacitated are impotent and sterile, because that would be just wrong. It smells like sloppy, uninformed writing. Not being able to move your legs doesn't automatically mean that you can't use your pride and joy - in most cases, that nerve is not affected and you'll be as good as before. Especially since he says that he has feeling in his legs, but he just can't move them, I would assume that Rogelio Jr. is working just fine. And how would they know if he is both impotent and sterile? I mean, I doubt they ever spoke to a doctor about his condition; they just *assumed he can't. And since Rogelio was a young man when he suffered the accident and still unmarried, I suppose he didn't think of having children, so he never found out whether or not he's sterile too. So how does everybody know? Paraplegic, impotent AND sterile? That's a bit too extreme.
About the rest, I still can't.get.over Dany's squeaky voice and I feel that the actress playing Elsa is terribly overacting. Esteban is cute, poor guy, he didn't manage to gain her love after all. Whoa, Vanesa was so lucky, two hot hunks were after her and she didn't hold to any of them.
Margarito annoys the hell out of me, but oh well, I usually can't stand telenovela kids on sugar rush, so it's no wonder.
Back to Rogelio, he was a softy in this episode, even taking Ana Paula's hand. She senses that some hormones of his went crazy for her and she seems unnerved. I think that more than being paraplegic, what made him be so grumpy and violent was the fact that he stopped being accepted for what he was. Vanesa didn't think twice to dump him and I believe this made him realize that he'll never have a family of his own because of the wheelchair and that the fear of living with someone of his condition is bigger than the love you feel for him. Probably if she would have stayed with him, motivating Rogelio in the way Ana Paula does, his bad mood wouldn't have reached these heights.
I understand his fear of being pitied or mocked by people. You feel when someone feels pity for you, because those people look at you in a certain way and those "Aww poor guy" looks would probably bother anyone in his condition. Yet he could have chosen just to be a dignified man, without changing who he was before. We see that it's not so hard for him to start changing positively, he quickly embraced the idea of being a better man; probably all he need was a trigger and Ana Paula was that trigger.
There are other possibilities I will not describe. However, most people believe that a male paraplegic will be impotent and right now only Rogelio himself knows whether he is or not. And I'm guessing he's not.
Yes, this.
I think what Rogelio needed was hope. I think he's almost immediately attracted to Ana Paula because she talks back to him and has spunk, but I think the thing that turns the tide and makes him actively want to "change" (rather than what he was saying before, about wanting to "tame" her) was hearing her talk about caring for her ill mother, and basically seeing how she has substance and is about being useful and having a purpose in life.
I think he knows that this nurse, who is educated and trained about his condition, will see him as a real man and not just a "cripple." He has hope because he can see a real future with her (whether he has actually admitted this to himself or not).
But the problem with Rogelio is that he still hasn't been truly tested, and his arrogant, "I am the master here!" jerkheaded habits are going to take longer to break. As well as the whole anger management thing. But now at least he has a motivation to change, because there is hope now, where he never allowed himself to hope before.
I don't think he's an evil man, sort of selfish and oblivious to how his angry words hurt people (like little Margarito). The whipping, however, is harder to reconcile. That's partly why (as I said before) I feel it doesn't "fit" him. It's just so nasty and violent, and most of the rest of the time he just seems like a petulant, grumpy jerkwad, but not violent to that severe degree. It's only with these occasional outbursts with the whip, which always have occured, so far, on able-bodied men who could evade him if they chose. So I kind of have to wear my heavy-duty beanie to understand the whipping scenes in connection with everything else.
As for him being impotent or sterile, I'm a little confused about what that means. I always knew that paralyzed men weren't necessarily impotent, and I doubted that any telenovela would make a galán (and Rogelio, jerkwad that he is, is a galán) impotent anyway. Is there some other medical reason why he can't father children?
I do recall a past novela with a sterile galan: Alondra. Carlos (Ernesto LaGuardia) is told in an early scene that he is sterile* and because he has two siblings with a major genetic issue he's relieved.
*Although I can't figure out how this would have been determined in 1900, when the story takes place.
Impotence is always temporary in TNs unless we're talking about a villain.
I also think that Vainessa and her family (and likely everyone else) just made an assumption about Rogelio's ability to father children.
I am not so shocked by Rogelio's ability to be both loving and kind, and his cruel streak and ability to beat people bloody. Afterall, historically many slave masters were like this. Kind with family and even favored slaves, like house slaves. But easily able to whip a person/slave to death if they felt it warranted it. Rogelio thunks he owns these people and his sister. Pure and simple. I'm disturbed by it, but not surprised by it.
I don't know if the producers are claiming Rogelio can't have children or if the characteres are simply ignorant about it and think what they believe based on their own conjectures. There is alot of ignorance about this on a national level here, and I'd imagine it would be moreso in Chiapas. I wonder if Rogelio simply made suppositions without ever questioning his doctor about it.
Jarocha
Good call on the entitlement thing with Rogelio's character. Comparing Rogelio to a "sometimes nice" slave owner with certain 'favorites' is really powerful and very disturbing indeed.
Shout out to Vivi and Cheryl—thinking out loud—if the fundamental conflict in the story is Rogelio's power-over/object relations issues then this is even more complicated by a very segmented society as they have in Chiapas—thanks Jarocha for that great info yesterday! Hmmm, that means the best redemption we can have for Rogelio the abuser is that he become a benevolent dictator. That still leaves the disempowered folks around him without equity or the chance for same. Maybe Rogelio will do some wealth redistribution? Send everyone on the estate and in the village to University?
I know, I know, I am stuck on how this thing will wrap up and we still have 100 episode to go.
EJ
La Paloma
Nice thoughts on Regelio's ability to procreate.
Karen: Thanks amiga, nice to see you over here.
Vivi: as usual you miss NOTHING! How interesting if AP and Vainessa are sisters.
UA: Nice work on the Bronte voice for this recap.
EJ
Of course we all know -- as experienced viewers -- that he can't be either. For the time being, though, Lady Chatterley is getting enough action for the both of them. This will have lots of amusement value for a while.
Thanks, Elna June. I'm working on it. Just received a copy of Jamaica Inn and two other Du Maurier titles, and I have Jane Eyre in another tab on my browser.
I stopped watching TNs after La Reina del Sur, in part because I didn't want to come in in the middle of one. I kept checking back from time to time to see whether there was mention of any new ones, but I guess I missed the announcement of this one. I wish there were a specific place on CarayCaray where this sort of information (new TNs and when they're about to start) could be found.
Vivi, thanks so much for your great observation about the possibility that Ana P and Vanessa are half-sisters. Though of course I noticed how much they resembled each other physically, I never thought further than that. Now that I've read your comment, I'm convinced you're right.
Cathyx, I too thought that Rogelio was telling Ana P that he heard her talking in her sleep, and that she said he was a bad man.
Variopinta, I agree completely that Elsa was/is over the top--even for a telenovela!
Anyway, hi to everyone. It feels good to be back.
The thought that Vanessa and Ana Paula are sisters is intriguing but I will be the lone dissenter until further evidence proves it to be true. I will chalk it up to coincidence. Many other unrelated people have similarities and resemblances.
I find Elsa's bug eyes to be really creepy to me. she is bad new indeed. I laughed out loud at her jealous death stare at Dany's cleavage, though I enjoyed seeing them too. ;)
When Ana Paula was in town with Rogelio, I found it very interesting that she did not run into the Engineer and her brother. Nor did she hear the conversation in the table from the other room. This is a funny case of hitting and missing each other.
Cinthia is my favorite character and woman here. She intrigues me to no end. I really like Ana Paula too. I think most of us would know by now that most affluent scions of rich families act the way Cinthia does. They mostly have that feeling of entitlement and class snobbism evident in mexican and hispanic culture.
Funny as I was typing this, I saw Vanessa and Ana Paula encounter each other for the first time in tonights episode.
Ibarramedia
I'm a little confused at the animal attraction that Maripaz seems to have for Miguel... it must be some kind of strange unibrow magic.
If Vanessa and Bruno got together, what kind of a smirk would their offspring be born with? Or would the smirk genes just cancel each other out?
Somebody, please FEED CINTHIA! I know everyone loves her abs, but don't you have to have something besides BONES to have abs??? I saw her in one of the clips from 10 years ago that someone posted recently and she actually looked human with just a few extra pounds.
Sorry this turned out to be such a whine-fest (just call me Vanessa)... there's not really a character I love yet, but I'm sticking with it for now. Got my Gancho dvds in the mail today :) (although I think they might've taken a few liberties with the editing, as it is only about 20 episodes long...)
Thanks for the recaps, UA!

Jarocha
AnotherAmy- I'm afraid that if Gancho has been cut from 220 to 20 episodes, all that will leave you with is the main couple and they were the dull part of a fun show. Que pena amiga.
I would love for Cinthia to look much more athletic than she is right now. Workingout intensely and having 6 meals a day of hight protein food like Tuna can help her physique, though she looks aceptable to me as she is. But I really do like athletic women.

I may be foolish posting here at such a late hour, but I was struck by your recommendation to download TNs. I used to be able to do that--I think I used the mistelenovelas site. But I stopped for a while, and when I went back, I couldn't find the list of TNs to download. I'd LOVE to have suggestions of where one can download them. Also, if you have any recommendations for downloaders to use that don't create problems, I'd welcome that info, too.
Muchas gracias por adelantado.
Novelas y Doramas - Click me , for example. What I like is that you don't need any special permissions to download - you just register and you'll see the links. There are some which require that, but not too many. One telenovela that YOU HAVE TO see is definitely Corazon Salvaje from 1993. Having only 80 episodes, you'll finish watching it in no time.
It's right here:
Corazon Salvaje - Click me
(If you log in, you'll see the links after refreshing the page).
Also, there is a blog with various telenovelas, uploaded through mega.
Click me
I'd also welcome any other suggestions for places where I can download TNs.
Again, MANY MANY THANKS!
