La Que No Podia Amar #6 Lunes 1/9/12 La Que No Podia Cambiar

Antes
Bruno tells Ana Paula he wants to take care of her, Maria watches Rogelio burn the photo of himself and Vainessa, Ana Paula helps Rogelio in his office. Rogelio gives permission for Ana Paula to instruct Margarito.

Nuevo
Hacienda Montero, terrace: As Margarito runs off with his book anticipating future lessons with Ana Paula, she speaks with Rogelio.
Ana Paula: Sir, thank you for giving me permission.
Rogelio: I was pondering if you thought I was going to change.
Ana Paula: And why not? Anyone can change. It is a question of whether they want to. I know you can be amiable. (At this statement his expression darkened) Well, if it suits you.
Rogelio: Well, as they say, believe in me. I intend to be a better person.
Ana Paula: In reality, this challenge [reto] isn't for me; it's for you.
Rogelio: For me.
Ana Paula: Yes. Because it is you who can change.
Rogelio (amiably): I don't believe it. We are only human.
Ana Paula: Of course. And because you must, believe that you can. And you will take this step because it is important.
Rogelio: A step like this can't be hidden. The whole world will see, is that what it wants?
Ana Paula: No, no, of course not. You should start by enjoying what you have. For example, why eat inside in a dark dining room when you have a terrace with a view like this?

Hacienda Galván, en el jardin: As though they had been eavesdropping on the conversation between Ana Paula and Rogelio, Vainessa and her father sit at the table in their garden. Vainessa speaks with her father about her feelings for Rogelio. She says she's confused about her feelings because she hasn't seen him in all this time, but can anyone be sure of that? Her papa is a wise man, reminding her that she jilted Rogelio when he became an invalid. She says he's the same as before. Her father reminds her that his condition won't change, that he [except for his fortune] cannot give her the life that women want. She knows, but her feelings haven't changed. She just contradicted herself, but her father appears not to have noticed this. He advises her to determine whether she feels love or guilt over the accident. “Don't lose what you have for something that most likely can't be.” He reminds her that Rogelio can never have children, which doesn't seem to bother her vanity for why should she wish to sacrifice her figure for a passel of brats? She promises she won't see Rogelio anymore but that she will still ask Esteban for a divorce in the morning. She is unconcerned about any risk of scandal.

Hacienda Montero, terrace: Ana Paula and Rogelio are a curious sight, she with her crutches and he with his wheelchair, as he speaks of his accident while they move along the terrace.

Rogelio: You know, when I was recovering from the fall from the horse, it was [???] He spoke in my sleep.
Ana Paula: And what did he say?
Rogelio: That I am an evil man.
Ana Paula: Excuse me, Señor Montero, but...
Rogelio: Yes, yes, I know I have a difficult manner. I have always preferred to inspire fear rather than be thought an imbecile.
Ana Paula: Nobody could think that. You've been deceiving them.
Rogelio: Many appear to be good but aren't. Because of that I trust no one.
Ana Paula: Perhaps, if you start this you may be surprised.
Rogelio: You believe so?
Ana Paula: Yes.
Rogelio: Perhaps then, the first person I will trust is you.
That inspired the hint of a smile on Ana Paula's face. It was no accident that her dress was all the colors of spring and short enough to display her legs while the master wore his perpetual black, flattering though that would normally have been.

Casa Carmona: Dany comes over to see Miguel before he leaves for work, looking happy herself because she has work to go to as well. As soon as Miguel mentions Gustavo's name, Tia MentiRosie hides the letter meant for him. He sweetly tells Dany he will miss her during his absence from their area. MentiRosie looks impatient for their departure and gives him a perfunctory blessing. She reminds him to be discreet around his boss, not speaking about his family. Of course liars and cheats will always say this to throw suspicion away from their own doors. To his credit Miguel finds this attitude curious.

Hacienda Montero, terrace:Ana Paula is still talking about how she will do her best for him when Sin-thia arrives to bitchingly joke about hiring someone to take care of the both of them. She even says something about when Ana Paula goes out riding with Bruno again and that she had better learn to care for the house. She also seemed to imply that city people have scant respect for country people. Rogelio lets Sin-thia know she is being out of line, She then suggests they go inside for breakfast. He tells her no; please tell Maria to set the table for breakfast on the terrace. When Sin-thia hears this she is at first incredulous; they had not dined on the terrace in years and she thought they never would again. Excited and pleased, she runs inside with the excitement of a young girl about to attend her first ball; however, when Maria comments on how Rogelio is changing since the arrival of the new nurse she maliciously wonders whether Ana Paula requested this change for the breakfast hour. As though this should matter because her brother is changing in a positive way. Maria's news about the burning of the photo provokes an expression of dread. She decides she suddenly had something to talk to Rogelio about just at that moment and runs back outside. As Maria asks herself just what's gotten into her we all know, dear readers, that she feels she is about to be dethroned in her own home by one she regards as a servant.

Commercial Break that leads with a promo for El Talisman.

Hacienda Montero, terrace: Consuelo lays the breakfast table; Rogelio pulls out a chair for Ana Paula and speaks with pride when talking about the ranch, which has been in his family for years. Sin-thia arrives and with a display of completely false innocence dismisses Ana Paula to speak privately with her brother. She could, of course, have waited until later when Ana Paula wouldn't have had to get up to depart on her crutches, but she is clearly demonstrating that she is the mistress of the house. This is not lost on Rogelio, who asks what it is that could not be said before the lovely nurse. Sin-thia tells him that Vainessa spoke of her impending divorce and that she thinks Vainessa is doing this for him. She is curiously happy about this.

Hacienda Galván: Federico informs Lety, his secretary, that Dany will work there with her as her assistant. After the brief misunderstanding over whether Dany is a replacement, the two young women bond over a smile and a laugh.

Hacienda Montero, terrace: Sin-thia runs on in the same false ingenuity about how Vainessa is divorcing Esteban because she still loves Rogelio. Rogelio, with all the powers of observation normal for people in his situation, sees through his scheming sister. “If she didn't love me then she doesn't now” he tells her, with the further command “Her name is never to mentioned in this house.” As Consuelo returns with bread and coffee, he then calls for Ana Paula to return to the table, but she tells him she expected to eat in the kitchen if they were going to speak alone. He insists she join him and instructs Sin-thia to help her to the table, after which he hands Sin-thia his Stetson and asks her to bring it inside. Sin-thia did need an etiquette lesson here and while Rogelio is generally ill-equipped to teach it, this time he did so eloquently. Perhaps he will finally remember also to always remove his hat in the presence of ladies.

Hacienda Galván: Dany explains to Lety about how she met Federico. At her reaction she apologises, explaining that Federico didn't want to worry his family about the hospital visit. Lety, like any good secretary, is accustomed to being discreet on her employer's behalf. She explains this to Dany with a warning to be careful around his wife, who is extremely jealous.

Hacienda Montero, recamara de Ana Paula: Margarito shows a drawing to AP and requests permission to feed the palomas. As he does so he speaks of how Ana Paula isn't like her predecessors; she has begun to effect change. She tells him that the relationship between a nurse and a patient has to work.

Hacienda Montero, cocina: Sin-thia complains to Maria that Rogelio is angry at hearing about Vainessa. Why she would want that ramera in her home is now revealed, that perhaps Rogelio would then allow her to live her own life. She complains that he wants her to learn to run the household. Maria then hands her the symbol of the chatelaine, the enormous ring of keys. Sin-thia looks at it as though it were the keys to her own prison. An enthusiastic Margarito runs in talking about a cake that was promised. As Maria suggests she learn to bake, Sin-thia flounces off to go riding. One would think that Mammy had just asked Miss Scarlett to make the beds.

Hacienda Montero, recamara de Rogelio: Rogelio looks at a document on blue paper as he and Ana Paula speak:
Rogelio: Before I engaged your services I had Bruno investigate you and present a report.
Ana Paula: Why? Did you think I would not stay?
Rogelio: Yes. Your aunt told me that in your family there are only herself, your brother, and you.
Ana Paula: Yes. My father died when I was a baby and my mother years later, of cancer.
Rogelio: It's difficult to lose one's parents so early in life.
Ana Paula: I almost don't remember my father, but my mother said that his presence could always be felt. Then when she became ill she prepared Miguel and me to accept her death. I took care of her the whole time.
Rogelio (attentive expression): That must not have been easy.
Ana Paula: Our relationship was strong. We talked about a lot of things. It wasn't easy but I'm grateful for the chance to take care of her. I decided then to become a nurse.
Rogelio's expression remained thoughtful upon this disclosure. As is usual with people of limited mobility, he is accustomed to thinking about what he hears and observes.

Jardin Galván / Bruno's office: Vainessa and Bruno discuss their plot over their cell phones. Despite his initial reluctance – or perhaps it is a psychological negotiation – he is willing to arrange a meeting between her and Sin-thia. She is willing to pay him well for services rendered, but does not state in what currency.

Hacienda Montero, cocina: As Ana Paula assists in baking the cake that will be that evening's dessert, Maria tells her about the burning of the photo. She is pleased that Rogelio is starting to put the past behind him and tells Ana Paula that she is the catalyst for this. That no other nurse had ever been able to accomplish anything positive with regard to his attitude. Margarito comes running in with eggs fresh from the chickens. He is told that this was most opportune and instructed to read the recipe aloud to them. Dear readers, we do hope he washed the eggs before bringing them inside. Rogelio enters the kitchen, interrupting this domestic moment, and Ana Paula rises from her chair. The master needs Hugo to help him up to his room, which is where we thought he still might be. Margarito runs out of the room to look for Hugo and Rogelio departs as well, but not as far as the women thought.
Ana Paula: It's so sad that the second he enters a room everyone becomes nervous and fearful.
Maria: I don't like this either, but what can we do?
Ana Paula: Maria, do you know if anyone is going into town?
Maria: No, why?
Ana Paula: I need to go shopping, just a few things. But I can do that another day.
Maria: Let me know what you need and I can arrange it.
Ana Paula: No. The truth is I like San Gabriel. I can manage a couple of bags with these crutches. [muletas]
Rogelio turned his head, the better to hear. While he has not expressed this to others, in his own guarded way he seems interested in Ana Paula in more than her professional capacity.

Commercial Break
Noche:
Hacienda Montero, recamara de Rogelio: Ana Paula enters on her crutches in her tight white uniform.
Ana Paula: Sir, may I come in?
Rogelio: Come in. Why are you wearing your uniform?
Ana Paula: To administer your therapy.
Rogelio: Pardon me, I don't know how to say this but I'd rather you not dress as a nurse. 9ominous music begins0
Ana Paula: Why?
Rogelio: Because I can't stand hospitals, doctors, nurses and their uniforms. I'd rather you dress another way, without the uniform. Are you sure you can thus give me the therapy?
Ana Paula: I hope so. At least I will try to understand because it isn't good to feel sick.

The ominous music continues as Ana Paula looks discomfited.

Hacienda Montero, cocina: Maria is baking with a little help from Margarito.
San Gabriel: Miguel and Gustavo arrive in the town square and seek out a place to stay.
Hacienda Montero, comedor: Bruno joins the family for dessert just as Maria enters to present the cake. Rogelio praises the cake specifically because he knows that Ana Paula had a hand in it.

San Gabriel: Miguel arrives and encounters Maripaz for the first time. She is quite taken with him at first sight, but who knows why such immature young men appeal to young women in her circumstances?

Hacienda Montero, comedor: Bruno is clearly uncomfortable at the table and departs immediately after dessert is cleared. Rogelio is alone with Ana Paula and invites her to accompany him to San Gabriel the next morning. He speaks of a restaurant with excellent food, which she knows is a positive sign.

Proximo dia:
San Gabriel, restaurant: Maripaz and another woman serve a hatless Rogelio and Ana Paula. Privately they comment on seeing Rogelio for the first time in ages; he never comes to town. Just as Rogelio tells Ana Paula this change is all her doing, Hugo brings his cell phone. This unwelcome interruption is Gustavo talking about the project and that they need to meet. Rogelio agrees and ends the call.

Rogelio (taking her hand in his on the table): I came in to town to talk to the engineer about work matters, but thank you for this morning. I want to tell you that I will change my ways.
Ana Paula (withdrawing her hand to play with her hair): It pleases me to hear you say that, Sir. While you are talking to him I will take advantage of the time to pick up a few necessities.
Rogelio: Good. Wait, wait. (takes out his wallet and withdraws some banknotes) I'll give you some money so you can get anything you need. (hands her the money)
Ana Paula: Thank you.

They exchange a meaningful glance, which is somewhat disquieting to Ana Paula. She may understand here that she has yielded to temptation, albeit a small one.

Hacienda Galván: Just as she has just finished telling Lety that she has a suitor who pleases her Dany encounters her boss's wife for the first time, as she enters the office unannounced. If anyone ever questioned Vainessa's vanity, a glance at her mother would have provided all the answers required. Elsa was clad in a peach-colored blouse inappropriate for the morning, as it was not only without sleeves, but left one shoulder bare. It was also unseemly for a woman of her years. As Lety made the introduction, Elsa stared at Dany's cleavage with the jealous eye of a woman past her prime looking at one entering hers. Dany, no silly young girl, quickly covered the offending sight with her steno pad and did not release her gaze.

San Gabriel, restaurant:Miguel and Gustavo part company before the latter enters the restaurant to talk business with Rogelio. How curious is it that Rogelio is now wearing his Stetson?

Hacienda Galván, oficina de Federico: Elsa la Vaca attacks Federico about Dany's hire. Her jealousy blazes brighter than the peach-colored blouse and her dyed red hair as she accuses him of lusting after Dany and Lety before her. He rolls his eyes as he sinks back into his chair. He is a long-suffering man who has heard all this too many times to give a different response.

La calle: Miguel and Maripaz encounter each other in the market and he carries her package as she directs him to a telephone where he might make a long-distance call.

La tienda de Ulises: Ana Paula is using that very telephone phone to talk to MentiRosie who tells her that Gustavo's information didn't come and she shouldn't get her hopes up. She explains to MentiRosie that her boss's attitude was about a woman who spurned him and that now he appears to be putting this behind him. MentiRosie seems pleased with this, saying that her boss has some temperament. Bruno slithers up behind her just as she hangs up. She explains that Rogelio is having a business discussion. Bruno doesn't want to intrude on that, but to accompany Ana Paula.

Hacienda Galván, oficina de Federico:Elsa la Vaca goes on and on about Mariana, a woman Federico once had an affair with. She will not let go of this past hurt despite that it was many years ago. She claims to have endured their marriage only for the sake of their daughter. She is a woman without dignity in her interaction with Federico. When he explains that Vainessa is seeking a divorce from Esteban, she can only think of the potential shame. She clearly can't see her own shameless attire or behavior as he does. He vaingloriously reminded her that she is living in the past and that Vainessa should not have to stay in an unsatisfying marriage. Unrealistically, Elsa la Vaca announces that she should have known that before she married Esteban.

San Gabriel, café: As Esteban stirs his coffee, Vainessa tells him that they need to face that their relationship is not all it could be. He looks as though he wants to talk about what they can do to improve it, but she announces that she wants a divorce. The effect is that of a force of nature and he refuses. He immediately knows that Rogelio is the reason, referring to his paralysis. Undoubtedly he is thinking, as most men would, that his own able body would serve the lady better. Indeed, the tight shirt over no undershirt displays that his assets are more than adequate; he merely needs to remove the premature grey from his hair and get a slightly new style. Nor would a new wardrobe be amiss. However, Vainessa will not listen to his entreaties and announces that their marriage is a failure. She merely informs him that her lawyer will be contacting him before she exits. Any reasonable observer would conclude that he could indeed do better in choosing a helpmate.

Commercial Break that leads with a promo for Don Francisco Presenta where Fina of CME is confronted by “Telesa”. Lo siento, but I don't think there is anything cute about this.

San Gabriel, restaurant: Macaria tries to serve something else as Gustavo displays a map and explains something that is obviously important. [As I am a woman of letters with no knowledge of engineering you will indulge me permitting someone more knowledgeable of these matters to provide the details of this conversation be s/he so inclined.]

Hacienda Montero: The cattle cross the lawn as Sin-thia (or Lady Chatterley) goes to her room and Efrain (Oliver Mellors) enters through the window.. He has apparently finished his chores and is looking for the private rewards of marriage without the public legal entanglement she will continue to deny him. She is not liking the smell of the stables and orders him to disrobe and bathe. He suggests they bathe together, but in the knowledge that Rogelio is not on the premises, he tackles her onto the bed and they enter into their dalliance.

San Gabriel: Bruno and Ana Paula talk about her mother and when he attempts to embrace her he withdraws in pain, remembering the whipping he took from Rogelio.

San Gabriel, restaurant: Macaria entertains Miguel in the kitchen as Gustavo and Rogelio continue their businesspeak over drinks. As Rogelio slips the rolled map back into its case, he speaks of changing because of a woman who has come across his path. These two gentlemen will soon need to remember that business and personal matters should never interfere with each other.
San Gabriel: Ana Paula and Bruno talk about the next time they go riding. He starts coming on to her.

Avances:

Three men clearly desire Ana Paula, Rogelio can no longer hide his attraction, and Ana Paula sees the ghost of novio past. But in the flesh.

Thank you so much UA for this wonderful detailed recap. I really like Frederico. He is a really nice man. It is too bad that Vainessa takes after her mother, it would have been nice to have some compassionate genes from her dad. His wife is a nightmare.

I feel sorry for Estaban, Vainessa's husband but he will be better off without her. I like the actor that plays Estaban. I saw him last in LVO as Carlos.

I wonder what Bruno and Vainessa are plotting? Revenge against Rohell? Are they using Sin-thia in their plot?

Rohell is starting to show his human side, quelle surpris. It is better than the whipping side of him. I am not a fan of his yet. This actor, Jorge Salinas is really good. I have never seen him in anything before. I am glad that Ana Paula is able to change him somewhat, hopefully the changes stick. And she really needs to take that whip away from him.

Urban A:

Thanks for providing such an excellent and detailed recap. I really enjoyed reading this with my morning coffee.

I am not yet connecting with this TN.It isn't the acting, which is OK, or the setting (Chiapas), which I find interesting as it is a place I have never visited. I have a problem with the story, specifically with the character of Rogelio.

It seems a cheap device to use Rogelio's status as a paraplegic to explain and/or semi-excuse his problem with rage and power. It is very sad that he has lost the use of his legs. Adjusting to that fact and the attendant frustration of limited mobility is something he will spend the rest of his life working with, I suppose. But Rogelio needs much more than the love of a good woman to change his behavior. As Ana Paula herself said, he needs to become a better person for himself.

First and foremost Rogelio would have to fundamentally recognize his rageful acting-out as wrong. Last night the character told us that he would rather be feared than thought a fool. These are a limited set of options for personal interactions—terrify others or be despised. Both perspectives are based in a basic self-doubt that has nothing to do with accident or injury and represent the character's feelings about himself and his power (potency) in the world.

Rogelio needs to learn to RELATE to his world, not just manipulate it.

Ana Paula, however sunny, spunky and hardworking cannot change Rogelio's world view. He would have to self-improve and maybe use teh idea of pleasing her as a motivation along the way.

As to his physical violence with Bruno the other day, it is totally repugnant to me. There is no excuse for this kind of power-over violent display. I shuddered when watching it.

If Rogelio's boundaries are so bad that he will beat a man one day and eat cake with him the next, something is truly off in his character—something that cannot be resolved by a new set of dimples, however charming these may be.

Thank you for an insightful and detailed recap, UrbanAnth. You do such a great job with so many dialog packed scenes.

I actually used this to relax last night right after recapping a two hour episode of Familia! Funny what can count as relaxation, I think it was just the change of theme and not needing to be typing while watching that gave me relief.

Madelaine, I am enjoying the unveiling of the inner RoHell. Salinas' face is so incredibly expressive. But I agree with you and Elna that I cannot stomach the violence scenes. I hope they don't bring more of them in the future.

Elna June, I really appreciate your thoughtful analysis of RoHell in particular but also Ana Paula who may begin to think she has more power than she actually has to effect change in a fundametally flawed man. The triple galan scenes will present interesting developments since RoHell will probably loose his composure in the face of competition. It will be intresting to see how the presence of the very self-centered Vanesa (Vain-essa is so true) but RoHell may succumb to her charms and his old feelings for her.

I enjoy Cinthia's romping in the prison antics with the stable scented foreman when she can't figure out how to escape the hacienda since she would lose everything. She really needs to find herself, she doesn't know how to do anything practical except ride, act out her class superiority, and now to confound RoHell in his quest for a relationship. She will help ruin his future, as if he needed help.

Thank you so much for this recap, Urban! Your attention to detail and insights on this episode were very helpful.

I think that we all know that it's going to take more than just one "challenge" from a pretty, spirited nurse to change Rohell's violent temper and general buttheadedness. But at least we have a start—a motivation for him to try to change his outlook. He wants to impress the spunky nurse. I think during the conversation in his office (where she was talking about caring for her ailing mother) he got more of an idea of the strength & substance behind Ana Paula—she's known suffering and grief, and she'll stick around and care for loved ones when things are down. Compare her to the vain and selfish Vainessa and we see who comes out ahead.

But I also agree that Ana Paula's sunny attitude and dimples are not going to be enough to "fix" what is wrong with Rohell. He's older and harder and has been getting his own way for a long while. He's never had to develop his impulse control when it comes to reigning in his temper, and that kind of change is not going to happen overnight! And I agree, I'm already heartily sick of that darn whip and disturbed by the whipping scenes. In a way I don't think they "fit" Rohell as he is most of the rest of the time (he's just really grouchy and says buttheaded things) but what do I know? I'm not a writer for this show. I guess they want us to see that he is very violent and nasty and as others have observed, this will make his inevitable redemption in the end all the more dramatic.

WOW, that Elsa (wife of the long-suffering Federico) is a piece of work! Her big starey poppy eyes and that really inappropriate outfit. It's not like the woman is unattractive or has a bad figure for her age, but she makes herself look so bad wearing outfits like that! And her crazy jealousy—you can tell has worn out poor Federico a long time ago.

I was amused at the scene at the terrace breakfast. Rogelio makes a production of removing his hat (which I think threw Sinthia for a loop—how can she miss the significance of this?). I also thought it was funny how Sinthia was so elated to be eating out at the terrace, but how her face fell when she discovered it was the mere servant who might have been the reason behind it. If I were Sinthia, I'd just be so grateful that my butthead of a brother was lightening up a bit, that I wouldn't care what prompted it, and in this case, there's nothing fundamentally *wrong* about a nurse helping her patient develop a healthier/better attitude. I can't feel sorry for Sinthia since she's such a terrible, classist snob.

One small addition: When Rohell gives Ana Paula money at the restaurant, he says it's so she can get more ingredients to make more of that delicious cake. I never could understand what he said when I first watched the episode (without CCs) but it makes sense now why she wouldn't hesitate to take the money.

It's a good thing Cinthia has fabulous abs, because she's lacking in the brain department. She wants out of that house so badly but can't see that Ana Paula is the way to go. Rogelio clearly still has issues with Vanessa, but with Ap he could soften and cut Cinthis some slack. Sure, she's just a servant gorl but why should Cinthia care? She can go to some city, find a husband who does not spemll like a stable, and get her own servants to abuse. And how could she let stinky Efrain roll around on her nice clean comforter? Finding some actual hay to roll in would be more appropriate.

I'm really glad to find out (thanks UA) that Rogelio told AP not to wear those nurses uniforms that she must have picked up at a sex shop. It must be hard to think about his therapy staring at her bosom.

Is Margarito yelling all the time? No wonder he bugged Rogelio. They may have told him to so he could be heard above the adults, but he doesn't seem like a timid actor so it shouldn't be a problem.

Elsa! Good god. I fully expect her music to change to the wicked witch theme. Have we found out the name yet of AP's mom to see if she's the one that Frederico had the affair with?

And finally, it seems like Rogelio does get the problems with his behavior. He knows he's a jerk and is trying to change, but I'm sure we haven't seem the last of that whip. Maybe Prozac would hlep.

Kelly

Not much time to comment. Too much work this week! But I wanted to thank you Urban for giving us one of your wonderfully detailed recaps. Gracias!

Elna June- Great analysis!

AP mentioned that her mom was a secetary, right before the scene with Vainessa's parents arguing about the secretary he had an affair with long ago. We know from Tia MentiRosa talking to herself that AP has a different father than her brother. BINGO! I think we now know why AP and Vainessa bear such a resemblance. They're sisters! Not spoiler, just speculation. But I think the writers were giving us BIG honking clues about it.

Great recap UA.

Aribeth sent me a message where she told me to tell you that she had also enjoyed your and Jardinera's recaps. She is having problems posting in the blogger but she is trying to fix them to be able to join us in the discussion.

So we are finally done (pretty quickly) with the tight nurse outfit. Just at the right time for Rogelio to appreciate pretty dimpled Ana Paula.

I agree that she alone can't make him change but I don't think his problems come solely from being in a wheelchair, it has to do with the kind of education he received growing up about what being him meant and how ending up in a wheelchair distroyed those illusions. He and Cinthia have issues when it comes to their origins and the kind of power they are supposed to have.

Esteban is a hottie and Vanesa is nuts for not realizing what she has.

Jarocha

Wow, Vivi! what a good catch on tiny details, The sisters will be instant rivals like Renata and Roberta on CME, I hope you are right, AP can gain a dad too, She is going to need one to champion her side with all the would be suitors/seducers after her,

Thanks Vivi. I need to pay more attention because I'm missing some of these details. Should be interesting when that comes out (in 100 more episodes).

Kelly

UA, thanks for the great recap and the new words for my diccionario.

Vivi, I thought the same thing about Vainess and AP being half-sisters - let the games begin.

Bruno is getting more sinister by the day. AP better run as fast as she can.

I wanted to reach into the TV the last couple of days to adjust AP's crutches. Thank goodness she has moved on to a cane, now I can stop obsessing about that little detail.

Rosemary

Definition problem: At one point, Ap says "Que pena, gracias" to Rogelio. I can't remember the context but I'm not sure how this works since I thought "que pena" was what a shame, that sucks, or something along these lines. I looked it up and I just can't find something where this makes sense. Thoughts?

Kelly

UA, thanks for the recap. Lots of fun lines. This was my favorite: "Dear readers, we do hope he washed the eggs before bringing them inside."

Hmmm, my guess is Bruno knows Vainessa and Ana Paula are half-sisters and is using this as part of his plot against Rogelio. But wouldn't Tia Rose know the identity of Ana Paula's father since she thought-bubbled that Miguel and Ana Paula don't have the same father? How could Tia Rose miss an opportunity to make $$$ with this?

Esteban with his premature gray and bedroom eyes is so fine. He seems like a nice guy, who should do himself a favor and let Vainessa dump him.

Since Vainessa and her dad didn't stick around a second after Rogelio's accident, how would they know whether or not he can have kids? It's not like they talked to his doctors.

Awesome recap UA. You have a great writing style and I love the asides. I think Rog is definitely becoming interested in AP and he cares what she thinks about him. He still has a long way to go in changing his chauvinistic way of thinking however.

So Vainessa (I love that) wants to divorce Estaban because she still loves Rog. Does she really love him though or is it guilt for dumping him when he became paralyzed.

I too wonder what Bruna and Cinthia are up to in regards to their schemes for Rog.

Thanks UA, very well done.

The only character so far that I've emotionally committed to so far is Cinthia. She makes no secret of what she is and what she wants. I also like the brother sister relationship between her and Rogelio.

So far, Rogelio really annoys me. He seems to realize what a cruel, graceless jerk he is and yet persists in treating those around him miserably. I hope before this is all over someone makes him eat that quirt.

Margarito proudly announced that he washed the eggs... I thought that you're not supposed to wash eggs.

It's really starting to bug me seeing those poor doves cooped up in that little cage. Ana Paula should get a dog instead.

Thank you for the recap, UA. I thought the discussion about falling off the horse and talking outloud while sleeping was about AP falling off her horse and when Rogelio was at her bedside, he heard her talk in her sleep about Rogelio being a mean and difficult boss.

I assume that Bruno would like to see Vanessa back together again with Rogelio to free up AP for himself, and to distract Rogelio.

Elsa, Federico's wife is scary looking. She has a certain bug-eyed crazy look about her. She will be trouble, I guarantee it.

I also predict that when the time Gustavo and AP see each other, it will be in front of Rogelio, and Rogelio will become very difficult again when he sees the sparks fly. Yes, AP now has three men in love with her. I'm not sure I would want to be in her shoes.

Gracias UA Great recap

When wild eyed Elsa came on the scene, I thought, what manicomio did she just escape from?

Rogelio, I'm sure was a nice guy before his accident, so he can get back to his prior self with the help of Ana Paula.

There is sth more to the Margarito story I think. Will his parents or at least mother be among our present characters, I'm thinking Cintia.

so far, so good on this TN

Great recap UA!! You really bring out the operatic aspects of this saga with your writing style. And, as most opera plots require serious beanie-tightening, it seems completely appropriate the the telenovela genre.

"Maria then hands her the symbol of the chateleine, the enormous ring of keys. Sin-thia looks at it as though it were the keys to her own prison." Nice observation.

"Dany, no silly young girl, quickly covered the offending sight with her steno pad" Well at least she was aware that the sight might possibly offend. The way most TN ladies prance around flaunting their assets unnerves me.

Thanks, LXV. I was trying for a duMaurier/Bronte voice but I'm not certain it's sustainable in 3rd person.

It's necessary to wash eggs because of where they come from. Birds' eggs are delivered through the same route as their guano.

Bruno is most likely plotting revenge for the loss of his father's lands (which I am guessing were forfeited for debt) and Vainessa is looking to grab Rogelio's fortune -- as he is the richest man in the area -- because he is not renewing the contract with her father.

I think the speculation that Vainessa and Ana Paula are half sisters is on the money; there has to be a reason they resemble each other beyond the fact that this resemblance gets to Rogelio. I'm still wondering if they're related off camera.

Rogelio's anger management problems are definitely about the accident and the disability. If there is an insecurity issue that relates back to his parents we still haven't been told. It would be interesting to know what his parents were like and whether that makes any difference.

I would like to add at this point that the fact that he has feeling in his legs not only means that he will get out of that wheelchair it means that he is in it in order to push Vainessa out of his life. He may have known on some subconscious level that she is bad news and the paralysis is more psychological than physical.

Thanks, Urban, for that excellent and detailed recap. Carlos~~Unlike you, I still haven't emotionally committed to any of these people. I do get a kick out of checking out Sin-thia's outfits and watching Sin and her boytoy manhandling each other. What a pair... Roughie and Toughie. Maybe Sin should put in a supply of Irish Spring because after working in the fields, farmboys are a little gamy. One of my classmates used to come to school right after he milked the cows. Everyone tried to avoid sitting next to him in class.

Thank you UA! I got a laugh out of the Gone With the Wind reference.

Vivi-I *finally* got around to re-watching the scene in which Tia mentiRosa mentions the paternity of the two. I went back and fixed it in my recap for future readers: "no doubt they resemble their respective fathers." Boy the CCs messed that one up! lol

I definitely agree with the supply of Irish Spring, but I also think that on some level Sin-thia enjoys slumming. It will be very amusing when anyone else in that household finds out.

There are several potential catfights in the making; gentlemen are well advised to tune in.

Esteban will be well rid of Vainessa, who is likely to become a copy of her mother in another 30 years.

Ahh, UA, good thought. Federico fooled around, could it be that he is AP's pop?

UA thanks for this recap. I enjoyed your asides and learned more about eggs than I had known previously.

EJ - great analysis of crazy Rohell and ITA with you.

Vivi - so glad you are on our team with guesses about future plot lines. The writers have given us clues and your speculation seems spot on.

Urban, thanks for your detailed recap! No, Vanesa and Ana Paula are not related in real life, despite having the same apellido and similar looks hehe.

Now back to the episode, the hints that Vanesa and Ana Paula might be in fact sisters were not precisely subtle, so I'm guessing it's not a coincidence that they have similar looks. We'll see how could Ana Paula benefit from this, apart from having a father for the first time in her life. He should give her valuable advice, if they'll ever find out about each other.

I don't like it at all how they treat Rogelio's paralysis. I hope the writer doesn't think that all the incapacitated are impotent and sterile, because that would be just wrong. It smells like sloppy, uninformed writing. Not being able to move your legs doesn't automatically mean that you can't use your pride and joy - in most cases, that nerve is not affected and you'll be as good as before. Especially since he says that he has feeling in his legs, but he just can't move them, I would assume that Rogelio Jr. is working just fine. And how would they know if he is both impotent and sterile? I mean, I doubt they ever spoke to a doctor about his condition; they just *assumed he can't. And since Rogelio was a young man when he suffered the accident and still unmarried, I suppose he didn't think of having children, so he never found out whether or not he's sterile too. So how does everybody know? Paraplegic, impotent AND sterile? That's a bit too extreme.

About the rest, I still can't.get.over Dany's squeaky voice and I feel that the actress playing Elsa is terribly overacting. Esteban is cute, poor guy, he didn't manage to gain her love after all. Whoa, Vanesa was so lucky, two hot hunks were after her and she didn't hold to any of them.

Margarito annoys the hell out of me, but oh well, I usually can't stand telenovela kids on sugar rush, so it's no wonder.

I wouldn't blame Rogelio too much for what's happening to Cinthia. Since everybody says that he wasn't like this 7 years ago before the accident, I suppose that if Cinthia would have had any intention of doing something with her life, she would have started doing it by then. I mean, they don't want us to believe that SHE'S NOT in her 30s, right? But she's the bitchy whiny type who just likes to point fingers and not see her own mistakes. I think Rogelio would mellow down if he would see her determined, but I think she just fakes this ambition of hers - she doesn't have any intention to do something important with her life, but only to get away from her brother. She's lazy and we've seen in the episodes before that Rogelio tried many times to convince her to work, but she always comes up with excuses. If she would get her part of the hacienda, she would probably sell it and buy drinks for everyone in the clubs. After all, Rogelio worked hard all these years to make the hacienda work and yet Cinthia takes for granted her part of the heritage, without thinking that she should get some sweat on her abs too. She just wants to take the money and run and probably that's why Rogelio doesn't want to let her go, because he knows that she would waste her life and her money.

Back to Rogelio, he was a softy in this episode, even taking Ana Paula's hand. She senses that some hormones of his went crazy for her and she seems unnerved. I think that more than being paraplegic, what made him be so grumpy and violent was the fact that he stopped being accepted for what he was. Vanesa didn't think twice to dump him and I believe this made him realize that he'll never have a family of his own because of the wheelchair and that the fear of living with someone of his condition is bigger than the love you feel for him. Probably if she would have stayed with him, motivating Rogelio in the way Ana Paula does, his bad mood wouldn't have reached these heights.

I understand his fear of being pitied or mocked by people. You feel when someone feels pity for you, because those people look at you in a certain way and those "Aww poor guy" looks would probably bother anyone in his condition. Yet he could have chosen just to be a dignified man, without changing who he was before. We see that it's not so hard for him to start changing positively, he quickly embraced the idea of being a better man; probably all he need was a trigger and Ana Paula was that trigger.

Did anyone here see the HBO series Oz? One of the regular characters was in a wheelchair and his male equipment worked. There was an episode where he explained this to another prisoner when they were applying for the privilege of conjugal visits. His equipment worked but he didn't feel it work. His wife would have to get on top and later tell him if he actually completed the act.

There are other possibilities I will not describe. However, most people believe that a male paraplegic will be impotent and right now only Rogelio himself knows whether he is or not. And I'm guessing he's not.

Alexandra wrote: "We see that it's not so hard for him to start changing positively, he quickly embraced the idea of being a better man; probably all he need was a trigger and Ana Paula was that trigger."

Yes, this.

I think what Rogelio needed was hope. I think he's almost immediately attracted to Ana Paula because she talks back to him and has spunk, but I think the thing that turns the tide and makes him actively want to "change" (rather than what he was saying before, about wanting to "tame" her) was hearing her talk about caring for her ill mother, and basically seeing how she has substance and is about being useful and having a purpose in life.

I think he knows that this nurse, who is educated and trained about his condition, will see him as a real man and not just a "cripple." He has hope because he can see a real future with her (whether he has actually admitted this to himself or not).

But the problem with Rogelio is that he still hasn't been truly tested, and his arrogant, "I am the master here!" jerkheaded habits are going to take longer to break. As well as the whole anger management thing. But now at least he has a motivation to change, because there is hope now, where he never allowed himself to hope before.

I don't think he's an evil man, sort of selfish and oblivious to how his angry words hurt people (like little Margarito). The whipping, however, is harder to reconcile. That's partly why (as I said before) I feel it doesn't "fit" him. It's just so nasty and violent, and most of the rest of the time he just seems like a petulant, grumpy jerkwad, but not violent to that severe degree. It's only with these occasional outbursts with the whip, which always have occured, so far, on able-bodied men who could evade him if they chose. So I kind of have to wear my heavy-duty beanie to understand the whipping scenes in connection with everything else.

As for him being impotent or sterile, I'm a little confused about what that means. I always knew that paralyzed men weren't necessarily impotent, and I doubted that any telenovela would make a galán (and Rogelio, jerkwad that he is, is a galán) impotent anyway. Is there some other medical reason why he can't father children?

I doubt it, Elvira.

I do recall a past novela with a sterile galan: Alondra. Carlos (Ernesto LaGuardia) is told in an early scene that he is sterile* and because he has two siblings with a major genetic issue he's relieved.

*Although I can't figure out how this would have been determined in 1900, when the story takes place.

Impotence is always temporary in TNs unless we're talking about a villain.

Our galan in CME was just the opposite of impotent. Five natural children by two women by the end of the tn! LOL!

I also think that Vainessa and her family (and likely everyone else) just made an assumption about Rogelio's ability to father children.

I am not so shocked by Rogelio's ability to be both loving and kind, and his cruel streak and ability to beat people bloody. Afterall, historically many slave masters were like this. Kind with family and even favored slaves, like house slaves. But easily able to whip a person/slave to death if they felt it warranted it. Rogelio thunks he owns these people and his sister. Pure and simple. I'm disturbed by it, but not surprised by it.

Urban A: Efrain enters through the window.. He has apparently finished his chores and is looking for the private rewards of marriage without the public legal entanglement --Love those euphemistic phrases....classyyyy!!!

Ernesto Laguardia is temporarily impotent in Alborada also haha. The thing is that I have the feeling that they are suggesting that the impotency -> sterility are strictly related to the fact that he's paralyzed. It's as if they didn't do any research on the subject and they assume that all the paralyzed men are unable to make a woman feel happy. It's not like all of a sudden, the organ shuts down, especially since Rogelio's paralysis allows him to feel, so it's not as severe as other types of paralysis. I believe this aspect of the story is treated too superficially (And NO, I AM NOT obsessed with seeing him get in bed with someone). There's not enough evidence to support the characters' claims that he can't have sex/children.

UA: I had forgotten Carlos was sterile in Alondra. Nice tidbits that are good to remember.

I don't know if the producers are claiming Rogelio can't have children or if the characteres are simply ignorant about it and think what they believe based on their own conjectures. There is alot of ignorance about this on a national level here, and I'd imagine it would be moreso in Chiapas. I wonder if Rogelio simply made suppositions without ever questioning his doctor about it.

Vivi:

Good call on the entitlement thing with Rogelio's character. Comparing Rogelio to a "sometimes nice" slave owner with certain 'favorites' is really powerful and very disturbing indeed.

Shout out to Vivi and Cheryl—thinking out loud—if the fundamental conflict in the story is Rogelio's power-over/object relations issues then this is even more complicated by a very segmented society as they have in Chiapas—thanks Jarocha for that great info yesterday! Hmmm, that means the best redemption we can have for Rogelio the abuser is that he become a benevolent dictator. That still leaves the disempowered folks around him without equity or the chance for same. Maybe Rogelio will do some wealth redistribution? Send everyone on the estate and in the village to University?

I know, I know, I am stuck on how this thing will wrap up and we still have 100 episode to go.

EJ

Thanks for an excellent recap, UA. Lots of insightful comments, as well. It won't be a quick or easy road to the new and improved RoHell, but I hope it's an interesting one.
La Paloma

Alexandra:

Nice thoughts on Regelio's ability to procreate.

Karen: Thanks amiga, nice to see you over here.

Vivi: as usual you miss NOTHING! How interesting if AP and Vainessa are sisters.

UA: Nice work on the Bronte voice for this recap.

EJ

If Chiapas is as backward as has been suggested, it's not a leap of faith to think that everyone around him believes that Rogelio is impotent/sterile.

Of course we all know -- as experienced viewers -- that he can't be either. For the time being, though, Lady Chatterley is getting enough action for the both of them. This will have lots of amusement value for a while.

Thanks, Elna June. I'm working on it. Just received a copy of Jamaica Inn and two other Du Maurier titles, and I have Jane Eyre in another tab on my browser.

Muchas gracias, UA, for an excellent recap. I'm coming a bit late to the party, having found out about this TN only a day or so ago. I've been reading the previous recaps, trying to catch up. The episode you recapped was the first one I was able to see.

I stopped watching TNs after La Reina del Sur, in part because I didn't want to come in in the middle of one. I kept checking back from time to time to see whether there was mention of any new ones, but I guess I missed the announcement of this one. I wish there were a specific place on CarayCaray where this sort of information (new TNs and when they're about to start) could be found.

Vivi, thanks so much for your great observation about the possibility that Ana P and Vanessa are half-sisters. Though of course I noticed how much they resembled each other physically, I never thought further than that. Now that I've read your comment, I'm convinced you're right.

Cathyx, I too thought that Rogelio was telling Ana P that he heard her talking in her sleep, and that she said he was a bad man.

Variopinta, I agree completely that Elsa was/is over the top--even for a telenovela!

Anyway, hi to everyone. It feels good to be back.

Thank You posting this UA. Good work. Ej, Cheryl and Vivi, very good discussions. I'm a little late for this as I would have added more. I have to add my 2 cents before I leave in the morning for the next episode. I type this now as tonight's show is playing.

The thought that Vanessa and Ana Paula are sisters is intriguing but I will be the lone dissenter until further evidence proves it to be true. I will chalk it up to coincidence. Many other unrelated people have similarities and resemblances.

I find Elsa's bug eyes to be really creepy to me. she is bad new indeed. I laughed out loud at her jealous death stare at Dany's cleavage, though I enjoyed seeing them too. ;)

When Ana Paula was in town with Rogelio, I found it very interesting that she did not run into the Engineer and her brother. Nor did she hear the conversation in the table from the other room. This is a funny case of hitting and missing each other.

Cinthia is my favorite character and woman here. She intrigues me to no end. I really like Ana Paula too. I think most of us would know by now that most affluent scions of rich families act the way Cinthia does. They mostly have that feeling of entitlement and class snobbism evident in mexican and hispanic culture.

Funny as I was typing this, I saw Vanessa and Ana Paula encounter each other for the first time in tonights episode.

Ibarramedia

Yes, Mar-gritando was shouting again... as horrible as I feel for saying this, and as cute as they can be, I have found every telenovela kid (except for maybe Lichita from LFdD) to be annoying as... well, you know.

I'm a little confused at the animal attraction that Maripaz seems to have for Miguel... it must be some kind of strange unibrow magic.

If Vanessa and Bruno got together, what kind of a smirk would their offspring be born with? Or would the smirk genes just cancel each other out?

Somebody, please FEED CINTHIA! I know everyone loves her abs, but don't you have to have something besides BONES to have abs??? I saw her in one of the clips from 10 years ago that someone posted recently and she actually looked human with just a few extra pounds.

Sorry this turned out to be such a whine-fest (just call me Vanessa)... there's not really a character I love yet, but I'm sticking with it for now. Got my Gancho dvds in the mail today :) (although I think they might've taken a few liberties with the editing, as it is only about 20 episodes long...)

Thanks for the recaps, UA!

AnotherAmy

AnotherAmy: Gancho is aroun 220 episodes long. I'm afraid you might encounter a great amount of editing. Lets hope they left the best moments in there.

Jarocha

Wow. So I just took a look at the tns avaiable for sale on Amazon, and it looks like all of them have been cut down to about 20 episodes. How is that possible?!

AnotherAmy- I'm afraid that if Gancho has been cut from 220 to 20 episodes, all that will leave you with is the main couple and they were the dull part of a fun show. Que pena amiga.

I don't bother buying those cut-down DVDs. They are way too short and don't have a lot of the good stuff.

Regarding full episodes of shows, I highly suggest investing in a external hard drive then dtasrt downloading the shows of your choice from the various sources of TN shows. I've discovered quite a few out there.

I would love for Cinthia to look much more athletic than she is right now. Workingout intensely and having 6 meals a day of hight protein food like Tuna can help her physique, though she looks aceptable to me as she is. But I really do like athletic women.

Ibarramedia

Ibarramedia,

I may be foolish posting here at such a late hour, but I was struck by your recommendation to download TNs. I used to be able to do that--I think I used the mistelenovelas site. But I stopped for a while, and when I went back, I couldn't find the list of TNs to download. I'd LOVE to have suggestions of where one can download them. Also, if you have any recommendations for downloaders to use that don't create problems, I'd welcome that info, too.

Muchas gracias por adelantado.

You can download several telenovelas from
Novelas y Doramas - Click me , for example. What I like is that you don't need any special permissions to download - you just register and you'll see the links. There are some which require that, but not too many. One telenovela that YOU HAVE TO see is definitely Corazon Salvaje from 1993. Having only 80 episodes, you'll finish watching it in no time.

It's right here:

Corazon Salvaje - Click me
(If you log in, you'll see the links after refreshing the page).

Also, there is a blog with various telenovelas, uploaded through mega.
Click me

Thanks VERY much, Alexandra, for letting me know about Novelas y Doramas. I'll definitely look into it and the other links you've provided. I might mention that I saw and enjoyed the abridged version of Corazon Salvaje (the version you mention) some time ago. Perhaps now I'm ready for the full version.

I'd also welcome any other suggestions for places where I can download TNs.

Again, MANY MANY THANKS!

Vivi, I wondered about that too when I saw how they cut down the dvd versions! I'm curious to see what it's like; I have a feeling I'll be checking it out online after all :)
