La Que No Podía Amar #18 Tuesday 1/24/12: You can't bullsh*t a bullsh*tter

IT'S ALL DONE NOW! Finally! (BTW, be sure to read the first hour's recap (for episode 17), written in a hysterical, witty style, by our own Sara.)

Because I'll also be doing Wednesday's recap (Cap 19), which is supposedly on an hour earlier than usual, I'm not going to do as full-detailed one on this one, but more of an overview with highlights of parts/scenes I find most interesting.

SOME OF THE MAIN HIGHLIGHTS WITH COPIOUS AMOUNTS OF SCREENSHOTS:

* Lady who has supposedly bought the house from baldy perv landlord says they must be out in 2 days. After Bruno rattles his lawyer-sabre a little bit, lady extends that to three days. Oooh, wow, that's a huge improvement.

There is a protracted scene between perv landlord guy and everyone else. Landlord guy tells Ana Paula that "all the houses" could have been hers (presumably had she "gone along" with his pervy intentions) but she angrily reminds him that he's MARRIED and maybe she'd go to his WIFE and have a chat. Later, Bruno confronts MentiRosa about how exactly did she "deal" with pervy landlord before with the late rent? Did she offer AP to him (landlord)? Bruno's getting a clue that MentiRosa is reprehensible and would have sold off AP to the landlord if she could.

Bruno starts to get a clue about how much of a MentiRosa she really is.
The 2,354th time that Tia turns on the waterworks to get Paula guilty. A suspicious Bruno looks on.
GUILT GUILT GUILT. She's a pro at dishing out the guilt!

*David hints that he and Sinthia should marry. Sinthia doesn't refuse, but thinks it's too soon, and besides, they wouldn't want to conflict with the huge boda that Rohell and Vainessa have planned. *cough cough*

David wants to move things along.
They agree to wait a little while before discussing marrying.

* Tia puts on various drama queen acts in hopes of guilting Ana Paula into marrying the Beast, errr, Rohell. So far no good.

* Bruno offers to help them with their lodging hardship (now that they have no home) but at first AP refuses, saying that she's waiting to see what's up with her boyfriend. Later, AP haltingly asks if Bruno can loan them something for a deposit on a room for Tia, but Bruno can't, citing some sort of banking problem and he can't get to any of his money at the moment. (Which seems strange. But whatever.)

*Federico has a man-to-man talk with Rohell about the pending marriage that everyone seems to think is going to happen. He understands that continuing their business arrangement is good for the business, but his overriding concern is Vainessa's happiness. He's concerned that things have not changed enough and comments that he was "convinced" that Rohell would never forgive and that Vainessa would never live with him in his "condition." Rohell laughingly says that it surprised him too. Fed concedes that Vain is somewhat impulsive and selfish. (NO, REALLY?) Rohell says "don't worry." There is some talk about grandchildren. Fed wishes that Rohell and Vain would adopt, but Rohell says that Vain is committed to not having any family. (I feel sorry for poor Fed with no grandkids to look forward to, then!)

Rohell is willing to sign a new business contract between them, but Fed is not so sure. Eventually Fed says that they could have a clause that says if anyone wants to bail on the contract prematurely, they must forfeit a fee of millions. Rohell is okay with this.

Rohell offers Federico a new contract.

Rohell is all affability when dealing with Federico.

* Fed also mentions that he wants Vainessa to have a part of his business. Rohell looks befuddled, as if he's thinking whatever, who would want a WOMAN involved in the business. Pig. Then Fed says he thinks it's time that Vain have some shares of the company. Rohell says "Por supuesto!" and toasts with Fed.

Talking business with Rohell.
They drink a toast to their business.
Does not compute: Why would Fed want to give a WOMAN a share in his business? (He is SUCH A PIG)

Rohell flashes a sneaky, sh*t-eating grin at the completion of the business meeting with Federico.

* Cupcake (Ana Paula) is able to get a job nursing and is bringing in a little money. She spends some of her earnings on Tia Mentirosa's pills (since Tia made such a stink about how POOOOOOOOR they were, and how she was so SIIIIIIICK but never mind her *cough*cough* she'll just wither away and die because they're so POOOOOOOOR). Tia is not amused and throws the meds in a box in disgust when Cupcake leaves the room. Tia also fakes passing out to squeeze more guilt out of AP.

TOTALLY faking it.
Cupcake tries to comfort a forever-hysterical Tia.

* More trauma for poor Miguel in prison. Dany tries to give him some meds/ointment for his hand but the thugs immediately take it away. Miguel again attempts to drive Dany away and break up with her, but she protests. She leaves him with the carved wooden heart that he made for her.

Dany brings some meds and other materials for the treatment of Miguel's hand.

Miguel sadly looks at the carved heart that he made for Dani and himself. Wonder how long it is before the prison thugs take that too?

* Later we hear that Miguel has been moved to the infirmary, where presumably he will be a little safer.

* Fed tries to have a friendly chat with Elsa la vaca about the business. She could have worked with him in the business all these years, she was smart enough. La Vaca says she realizes she should have now; maybe if she'd been at work he wouldn't have had the affair with the secretary.

She can't miss any opportunity to make a dig about the affair he had like 20-something years ago.

* There are some very amusing scenes between scheming Tia and scheming Rohell. "You can't sh*t an old turd" as an old friend of the family always said. Both of these characters are old turds, but Rohell's a tougher old turd and Tia is no match for him. Tia tries to squeeze more money out of Rohell, with uneven results.

* In the first scene between these two old turds, Tia expects Rohell to pay up for the pervy landlord, since he did his bit and they're now kicked out of the house. Rohell isn't going for this. "Sucks to be you" he says, in essence, to Tia. He's not paying out anything UNTIL Paula consents to marry him. She then mentions that BRUNO has offered to help. This momentarily takes the sh*t-eating grin off of Rohell's face, but he quickly recovers and says that hey, it's good that she has other options. Tia does not look amused.

He'd better get used to this: Tia hitting up Rohell for more funds.
But this old turd is no pushover.
She realizes, too late, that she miscalculated how much she could squeeze out of fellow old turd Rohellio.
The toughest old turd has the last laugh. Tia is not amused.

* Back at the pueblo where Gustavo is recovering, Ernesto tells Mercedes that Gus's liver and kidneys may have been damaged due to the dehydration and they don't know yet how bad off he is. Mercedes is understandably distraught.

Worried about her little bro.

* A conversation between Bruno and Rohell. Bruno wonders why Rohell won't do more for our Cupcake. "Sucks to be her" is what he essentially says.  He's already helped out a lot and reminds Bruno to just do what he tells him to. Bruno can't figure out Rohell's game.

"Sucks to be her" is what Rohell says about Ana Paula's woes.

* Ana Paula has a conversation about all her woes with Dany. She can't just do nothing! Whatever, more of the same. FF>>>

Our Cupcake is resolved to not just do nothing.

* In a scene between Vainessa and Rohell, Vain whines about wanting to stay in Tuxtla. Rohell says of course they'll be at the Hacienda. She says but she'll need to be in Tuxtla a lot for business, besides, she'd like for them to have a place just for the two of them; Rohell relents and says to start looking for a house, then.

She's an expert at whining.
Happy that she thinks she's getting her way.
Smiles all around.

* There are a series of scenes, which I've spared you, with more guilt-guilt-guilt being heaped on Ana Paula by Tia, what are we gonna do about Miguel, poor us, maybe you should reconsider taking up Sr. Montero's offer, blah blah blah.

* AP and Tia sell the furniture in their house. Tia looks on and cries.

Selling off the furniture. (My sister loves the pretty window in the background!)

* Another delightful scene between our two resident old turds. Tia tries to hit up Rohell for more funds because they've sold off their furniture and have nowhere to stay. "Sucks to be you" Rohell says again. Tia had promised him that she'd help persuade Paula to say yes to his proposal, but Tia obviously hasn't tried hard enough.  She starts to whine about all the problems but he doesn't want to hear it. He taunts her by saying that maybe she should go hit up BRUNO for help. Again Tia realizes she's been outmaneuvered by a tougher old turd.

The complete lack of empathy and concern for Tia's problems are etched all over his face.
Her whining and entreaties are not moving the other old turd in the room.
He taunts her and reminds her that she can always go to Bruno if she wants.

* Things are going along swimmingly between Federico and Rohell. A new contract is going to be signed. Federico is also giving Vain 30% of the shares of his company. Rohell snorts out some piggy thing about not wanting to give his opinion on women being in business. As Fed, Vainessa, Sin, Elsa la Vaca et al are all in accordance and happy about the turn of events, Rohell has this sneaky, sh*t-eating grin on his face for a split second. If we doubted before that he had nefarious plans, we have no doubt now.

Giving a congratulatory smile to Vainessa over being included in her dad's company.
Everyone's so happy. We'll see how long this lasts.
Sinthia, inspired by seeing Vainessa welcomed into the business world, comments about women in business to Rohell. (A not-subtle hint about her wanting her share of the Hacienda.) Rohell laughs and makes a comment about her learning to cook beans (?) while he makes a "stirring beans in the pot" gesture. He is telling her (in a totally douchebaggy way) that he doesn't think she's ready to do business, and Sinthia does not look amused.
Federico talks in loving terms about how he wants Rohell and Vainessa to have a happy relationship. Vain stoops down to give him a smooch, as Rohell offers us a glimpse of how he really feels about her.
Then he gives his trademark sh*t-eating grin.

* Our Cupcake has to leave to start her work with Rohell at the Hacienda shortly but wants to try one more time to get news about Gus before she has to go. She has been informed by Mercedes (via phone) that Gus is in really bad shape. She goes to the hospital where Mercedes works in hopes of encountering her there, but instead hears from a nurse that Mercedes has just had a loss in the family and the nurse gives Cupcake a newspaper with an announcement of the death of "Gustavo Duran Esquivel." Cupcake walks into traffic (literally) with the newspaper clutched in her hand. She goes to see Dani and tells her the terrible news.

"No puede ser!" (It can't be!) Ana Paula is devastated by the news of Gus's death.

She wanders out into traffic, shocked at the news, with newspaper clutched in her hand.
Crying on Dany's shoulder.

* An interesting scene between Rohellio and Vainessa. He's angry because she signed the business contract without looking at it first. She whines that she knows he wouldn't hurt her because he loves her, and besides, her father had already checked it out. Rohell warns her (with great sincerity) to never trust anyone, especially loved ones; they can betray you the most. Between Vainessa's clueless whines, he says, "Do you know how difficult it was to do business with your father all these years, after you dumped me?" She placates him by sitting on his lap, and after a moment of true sadness passes over his face, he proceeds to suck face with her passionately.

They sure do drink a lot in this TN.
"Everything has changed!" she assures him.
He shows his true feelings for a moment.
Then gets into the passionate kiss that she initiates.

* Tia is actually taking her fellow old turd's advice about approaching Bruno for help. Over lunch, she is sharing her "concern" for Ana Paula, and saying that she's wondering if that old turd Rohellio has some "hidden interest" in AP, what with him being so determined to have her work for him and all. Bruno smirks and says that he used to wonder about Rohell's feelings towards AP as well, but he now thinks he was mistaken, because Rohell just recently got engaged to his ex-novia, Vainessa. MentiRosa looks impactada at this news and blurts out "QUE?!?!"

Sneakily "implying" that maybe Rohell's interest in Ana Paula is not entirely professional.
Yeah, he used to wonder about that too, but now that Rohell's gotten engaged to Vainessa, Bruno assumes he was barking up the wrong tree.

Rohellio already engaged? QUE!?!?!? Uh oh, does that mean she's lost her current meal ticket?

* Our last scene is at the grave of Gustavo Duran Esquivel. An older woman (presumably Gus's mom) is crying as well as Mercedes, with Ernesto in the background saying that Gus would not want them to be unhappy.

No, say it ain't so! Has our beautiful eyelashed one gone on to the next life?

Avances: More douchebaggery. Miguel has it very bad in prison. AP promises to help. Prays in church. Maybe she'll have to pay the ultimate price and marry that old turd Rohell.

From the avance: Nice little split-screen shot showing how obsessed the old turd Rohellio is with Ana Paula.

Comments:
That covers a lot, Elvira, good choices of screen shots. I loved, "Totally Faking It".
I missed the first fifteen minutes because my cable called what was broadcast at 9p the state of the union addtress-and it wasn't, but I managed to manually record some of it.
This is a very elaborate sting Rohell is setting up, and Paula is the perfect woman for him to pull it off. I do wonder if he'll still be a douchebag at the end or a hero. Possibly both?

Elvira, your screenshots were excellent (especially of the calculating Rogelio, whose mask momentarily slips...)

Your intro recap was great. "Rohell snorts out some piggy thing about not wanting to give his opinion on women being in business" had me chuckling. This was wonderful - I can't wait to read the rest.

I feel so much pent up energy from Sin's character. Susanna Gonzales is doing a marvelous job. I could also envision her in Vain's role - a much more passionate personna to be sure.

Miguel's torment at the hands of the inmates is almost impossible to watch. I hope his stay there ends quickly. Blech.

Anvils lining up already - will definitely be interesting.

Diana

Great screencaps and enough words to get me started.

I actually love Jorge Salinas' closing expressions in the episode. They clearly demonstrated that Rogelio finds the prospect of a future with Vainessa distasteful. He briefly looked like he couldn't wait for this charade to be over.

Sin-thia is right to want to put on the brakes. She should suspect David of wanting her for her money.

AP should move in with Dani (where is her family?) and take on all the work she can handle. I find it appalling that nurses are so poorly paid.

Who was responsible for the newspaper article?

Thank you much! You are a gem of a recapper. I haven't watched the aexond hour yet but I'm going to keep my eyes open for the sh*t eating grin. I now mad at myself for keeping the dialogue about Gus' dad out of my recap. They kept saying it wa nothing. Damn. I fell for it and figured it was just filler conversation. I'd I get time tonight I will go back and it for future generations. Lol

Ugh. Excuse typos and weird grammar. Posting from my auto correcting phone.

Wow Elvira excellent recap, I can't sleep & am in heaven seeing your recap already up at 4am my time!
Loved the screen shot of old sneaky Rogelio , he looks like the Grinch that Stole Christmas with that smirk! Even his heart is 10 sizes too small!
I wonder what's the dilly-o with Ro-gelio??

As far as the funeral of Gus goes, must be his dad who passed. Wasn't he sick? So Gustavo must be a Gus Jr, I hope!!!! A mix up so now our dopey little cupcake will feel empty & hopeless, leave town & marry the grinch. Ugh

I must admit I miss Cynthia in her Dallas coyboy cheerleader outfits!

Thank you Elvira for this recap and screen shots. I liked your can't sh*t an old t*rd. So Rohell's revenge plot moves forward. It seems he wants to ruin Fredrico in the process. That grin is Machevaillan.

I hope Miguel gets moved or out of prison soon. Diana I agree with you those prison scenes are hard to watch.

That Tia, I can't believe she fake fainted. The Cupcake should have taken her to a doctor but of course the Tia wouldn't have gone.

I can't beleive Gus is dead either. I wonder if that is Gus' father. I remember from a previous episode that Mersnotty said her Father health was in a bad way. I wonder if the Father and Gus have the same name? Just a thought.

ITA UA about Sin and David. I think he wants some of that money too, considering he cuts corners on
his business and being crooked.

I personally can't wait until Rogelio pulls the old switcheroo at the altar. I wonder whether Vainessa will be waiting for him in one place in her fancy bridal gown while he's at the other with Ana Paula (whose dress would be more modest in price).

Thanks Elvira. Lots of good humor and of course well-selected photos.

So now that Ana Paula thinks that Gus is out of the way, is she going to go ahead and marry Rogelio?

OK. So now that the furniture is sold, where did Gus' personal effects end up?

Also, one would think that Ana Paula would notice that the phone cord was cut as they were moving out the furniture.

Carlos

Thanks for the recap Elvira. Did anyone else see a shot with the dates on the tombstone (1950 -2011)? I think we (and AP) are to think Gus is dead so then she'll actually marry Rogelio (my speculation).

Thanks, Elvira, for the heroic recap (I don't want to think about how late you had to stay up to do it) and the great pix. Like the earlier episode, this one made me tighten my already uncomfortably tight beanie. What kind of nurse is Cupcake if she can't tell that there's nothing wrong with Tia when she supposedly collapses on the floor?

I was a little surprised at my fellow viewers' comments, since I assumed from the start that the "Gustavo" who died was Mercedes' sick father, not her brother. And, of course, there was also the shot of the headstone with the 1950 date of birth. I can understand why Cupcake would assume it was her Gustavo who died, but why would viewers be confused after watching the episode?

Thanks everyone, I am later than I thought I would be in covering the rest of the episode. I will get some Pepsi to fortify me and then fill in a few blanks. And add more screenshots!

Yeah, I saw the birthdate of "Gustavo" in the avances and noticed that his birth year was 1950. So obviously not our eyelashed one. Some of the rest of you had sharp eyes and noticed that too! :D

It seemed odd that they'd set up this big mystery about Gustavo and then blow it in the avances. What's up with that?

I didn't totally inderstand what the Tia was trying to do other than play Bruno and Gustavo off each other. But I don't think she meant to lose the house and all her furniture. Well played, Rosaura! Well played.

After the things he said tonight (stupid women thinking they can do business) Rogelio is going to have to save a whole herd of puppies fom drowning or something if he wants forgiveness from me. Can we start a Save Cinthia campaign? She needs out asap.

Kelly

Thanks, Elvira, for recapping—you are a real pro. Your screen shot of Tia Mentirosaura "totally faking it" made me laugh out loud.

Carlos, so many beanie moments, so little time. Sigh. I would have to call the story so far a "Tragedy of Errors, Malice and Foolishness."

-Miguel shouldn't have been driving when he was so tired. Error! Foolishness!
-Two people are KILLED DEAD because of this. Tragedy!
-Rogelio is a violent, rage-filled man who is using all of his resources to conduct an elaborate revenge against his once-and-(perhaps not)future lover, Vanessa. Malice! Error! Foolishness!
-Ana Paula is kind, romantic and she lives in her own private Chiapas full of happiness, light and ignorance of all that is happening around her. Error! Foolishness! ANNOYING!
-Vanesa is incredibly vain, snobbish and spoiled. She too, lives in her own private Chiapas, just like Ana Paula, hmmmmm. Error! Foolishness!
-Cynthia, a.k.a. poor little rich girl, needs to get a life. Tragedy! Error!

Gus is a boring do-gooder, Mercedes is one self-righteous, controlling gal, David is on the make and is nearly as sleazy as Bruno, who sold out long ago. Efrain is grasping and duplicitous. Dani is desperate and needy.

Let's see, who do I like? So far, repeating what Kelly said yesterday, I like the horses, the hacienda, sincere and pure Consuela, Esteban Maria and little Margarito.

Just needed to let off a little steam about this TN. Hrumphhh.

EJ

Love your recap Elvira. I don't think Rohell intends to ruin Fed but if he does, he's really gonna feel bad when we all find out that Fed is el padre de Cupcake.

When Rohell softens up his look I swear I melt! I think I'm in love (again). In any case, I think he is going to turn out ok in the end.

Heads up. PBS News Hour (6 PM in most places) is doing a segment tonight, "Why watching a telenovela can be good for your health."

Thank you Elvira. A 2 hour recap is difficult and this one came on all of a sudden, it seems.

I saw the tombstone too and noticed the dates. The picture conveniently has flowers in front of the dates. Gus senior died young at 61.

All this conniving and backroom deals is making me dizzy. I doubt I could keep up in English, let alone in Spanish. Thank goodness for this sight so I can get it straiaght.

Thanks for the recap on the double episodes Elvira. I can't wait to see what Rog has in store for Vainessa. I like the sneaky gleam he gets in his eyes LOL. You gotta love Rog he's good at his game so far. I love the ambiguity of whether Rog is a hero or villian. He's so complex.

Rosaura is driving me crazy with the constant whining and wringing of hands. If I were AP, I would marry Rog just to get away from her LOL.

"When Rohell softens up his look I swear I melt! I think I'm in love (again)." Anon 2:36 isn't he handsome when he smiles and softens his face. Yummy.

Elvira, great storytelling. Thanks for the pics.

Other than gifts and a dry marriage proposal, David is not putting much into a relationship with Sinthia. He's after her $$$ of course, but I'm thinking he's got a chick on the side too.

Seems to me Ana Paula would still want to pay her respects to Gustavo's snitty sister or visit his grave, where she'd find it's Gustavo Sr. who died.

I'll third the comments about how handsome Rogelio is. I didn't think so at first because he only scowled and never smiled, but when he does smile, watch out. Is this actor Cuban? He kind of has a Desi Arnez look about him.

Pirate Babe, even if Rogelio turns out OK, I still think he's a bad guy from all that we know of him so far. I hope he turns around and feels bad for his past behaviors though.

Elvira and Sara, thanks for the excellent coverage of this intriguing episode. I'm almost on the edge of my seat, waiting for the fireworks to start, the sh*t to hit the fan, etc., etc. Isn't it nice that Rohell can create some fun for himself in the midst of his suffering?

Our little cupcake is suffering from classic TN misdirection and deception, with obvious long-term consequences. Oh, the bitter tears that will fall in the days to come!
La Paloma

Jorge Salinas is Mexican-born, but I have no idea whether his parents or ancestors are from Cuba or Spain. Or anywhere else.

I've always thought him hot. He has that strong, decisive look that is mandatory for male sex appeal. Anyone else see Mariana de la Noche?

Thanks Sara and Elvira. Great, funny work.

I'm liking this more as the conflicting and confusing motivations of Cinthia, Rogelio, Vanessa and her father play through. I agree, btw, about Susana G. I recall how tentative she was in Pasion; she has really grown as an actress.

Cupcake and her dim brother and evil aunt leave me cold. Some of it has to do with the acting, I think, with MentiRosa in particular a good actress but being directed to emote just toooo much (shades of Ana Martin in STUD). She comes on the screen and I cringe. Way too much crying, whining, and wailing generally among Cupcake (just love that!), MentiRosa, Dani, Mercedes.

Urban A, I did see Mariana DLN. In fact, I think mentioned it at the beginning of this one, with Cesar Evora as the domineering family head, a sister at his side (one day to play Gaviota), and a young engineer played by Jorge Salinas. He was great in that one.
La Paloma

Thank you for the recaps Sara and Elvira!

I don't know where Jorge's parents are from but his full name is Jorge Salinas Pérez, which is the same name as Carmen Salinas's father. But they aren't related.

I think the first time I saw him was as Ludwika Paleta's family chauffeur in El Abuelo y Yo. His role was very small, you can find some captures here:

http://foro.univision.com/t5/Jorge-Salinas/FOTOS-Capturas-JORGE-en-El-Abuelo-y-Yo/td-p/341192902

Jarocha

Oh my gosh, Jarocha, I NEVER would have guessed that was Jorge Salinas! He looks about 14 there. Thanks for the link.

It was kind of fun picking out screenshots for this episode, because there were some beautiful frames with Rogelio smiling. I agree, he's quite lovely when he smiles.

I have the DVD of Mariana de la Noche (when I found out that Cesar Evora was in it too, clearly I HAD NO CHOICE but to buy it!). Haven't seen it yet, though. I'm looking forward to seeing Jorge Salinas in another role. He's now one of my favorite telenovela stars.

The tombstone said "Gustavo Duran Esquivel" which is the name I saw on Gustavo's business card. I assumed it's the father who died which means they both had mothers whose maiden names were Esquivel. ¡Qué coincidencia!

LOL Elviara. I don't think he was 14 but Ludwika was like 10 so yeah, it was a long time ago. The little boy in the pictures is Gael García Bernal, the movie actor, Osvaldo Benavides had a small role too there as a friend of Gael's character. It makes you wonder what's gonna happen with the child actors we see in telenovelas today.

Jarocha

I was disappointed in the MDLN DVD because it omits the great love scene from the beginning of their relationship. However, somewhere it has the music for it and that particular leitmotif is so beautiful it falls somewhere between Wagner and Tchaikovsky.

Jorge Salinas is totally stealing this show, even if he is a crime boss

I agree, Jorge Salinas is awesome. He makes me laugh in almost every episode, with all his piggy, douchebaggy ways. (The whipping isn't funny; fortunately that seems to have stopped for the moment.)

I think that Jorge Salinas was about 24 in those old pictures. No puede ser! He looks so much younger.

I'm looking forward to seeing "Mariana la Noche." I did find some downloadable episodes online, but the quality was so bad, I'm not sure I could suffer through them.

BTW, Megaupload's demise has put a damper on my telenovela watching, since so many shows I'm following or trying to follow are uploaded to Megaupload. I hope someone re-uploads these old shows to another service soon! (I only have about the first 100 eps of Fuego en la Sangre downloaded, so that means I lack the other 100. Bummer!)

It's late to comment, but I had to say that I loved the shot you took and posted of Mentiarosie's feint faint. You captured the dark comedy of the scene so perfectly! Great reacap, amiga!
