La Que No Podía Amar #9 Thursday 1/12/12 The Woman Who Couldn't Get Away Fast Enough

So, Paula's gone, but she left a goodbye note for Rogelio. He backs away from the breakfast table for the tiny bit of privacy that affords: "Dear Numbskull, hey, I tried to talk to you, but nooo. I'm not putting this job above my dignity and you've been a total ass. I'll pay you back the money you used to pay off Bruno, starting with this month's salary, but you're not the boss of me no more! I'm too nice not to end things on a positive note, so, puppies, butterflies, go be happy. Kisses, AP." Rogelio crumples up the letter. Bruno walks in and Rogelio greets him by telling him that Ana Paula has left and he wants Bruno to get her back, ASAP!

Out in Boca del Cielo, Gustavo calls David and lets him know things are all ready, but there's a fishing village nearby. They're worried about the water from the hotel contaminating their fishing waters. He's talked to them and they are ok after hearing about the water treatment process, but one of them will be unofficially supervising the work. David doesn't really care, he just wants to get started on this multimillion-dollar project, ASAP! (No wonder he gets along with Rogelio!) Gustavo gets praised for going the extra mile to get things done, which is exactly why David sent him out there.

The bus Ana Paula was traveling on has broken down. They don't know how long it will be before another bus comes along that can pick them up. Our plucky heroine drags her pigeons and her luggage away from the bus.

Rogelio starts taking his anger out on Maria and Cinthia and says they'd better hope Ana Paula comes back, especially Cinthia since she'll be the one stuck taking care of him. He demands Cinthia take him out to the terrace and they meet Margarito on the way. Rogelio starts interrogating him, insisting he knows when Ana Paula left and where she want, but Margarito doesn't know. Efrain interrupts the torture session and says "ya estuvo, patron" (that's enough, boss). He tells Rogelio that he went to town to run an errand and he took the nurse. He's almost bragging about it and that earns him a lashing from Rogelio. Cinthia tries, ineffectively, to intervene.

Gustavo is driving down the road when he sees the broken down bus, and Ana Paula standing by the side of the road in her sweet little pink dress. Hey, AP, is that a broken down bus, or are you just happy to see me?

Cinthia is cradling Efrain in her arms and yelling at Rogelio that it's not Efrain's fault! "He should have asked my permission before taking her anywhere!" Efrain gets the hell out of there, leaving Cinthia to get manhandled by Rogelio again. He yells at her not to question his authority in front of the help or he'll conveniently forget she's his sister. Um, and that would be different how?

Gustavo and Ana Paula are just sooo happy to see each other again. Gustavo says he was going to find some pretty place to hang out and he'd like her to join him. Especially since they never did get their date.

Bruno calls Rosaura, trying to find out where Paula is. He tells Rosaura that she abandoned her post and didn't even talk to him about it. Rosaura whines about losing the money. She assumes that Ana Paula must be headed back to the house. She hesitates to agree to let Bruno know when she gets home, but eventually does and asks him to also let her know if he hears anything. As soon as she gets off the phone, she starts cursing Ana Paula for a fool. "Don't even think I'm going to work again because of you!"

Ana Paula is trying to call her loving aunt, but there's no signal. Gustavo suggests they try to call her from the next town. I roll my eyes at their small talk about the pigeons.

Margarito goes crying to Maria about his mistreatment at Rogelio's hands. He snuck in her window last night and saw her crying and telling the pigeons that if the boss smacks everyone else around, sooner or later it will be her turn, so she'd rather leave before that happens. Margarito agreed she should leave and go back to her family, who loves her.

Gustavo asks why she quit her job. She says she couldn't handle her patient and thinks it would have driven her crazy to stay. The only one she'll miss is Margarito.

Cinthia tends to Efrain's wounds. He cries that he figured the boss had fired her, just like all the others. How was he supposed to know she quit? Cinthia calls her a "maldita esquincla" (damn brat) and says she got Rogelio even more upset than usual. Efrain figures he'll take it out on them. Cinthia didn't even see him get that bad over Vanessa. She feels bad about Rogelio hitting him. "Oh? Why should you care? I'm just one more worker who smells of cow. I heard you talking." Cinthia gets a little weepy and says even if they're never going to have a serious relationship, she does care about him and it hurts her to see him like this. They cry on each other's shoulders.

Bruno lets Rogelio know that her aunt didn't even know she'd left. "What do you want her back for?" "Because no one leaves here without my say-so!" Bruno laments that he thought Paula was more professional than that, but she does have a grouchy streak. Rogelio tells him to offer her double her salary, even triple if he has to, but he wants Paula back! Bruno grins speculatively.

Gustavo took Ana Paula back to Boca del Cielo. He's covering her eyes as they walk along the sand. She can hear the ocean, which she's never seen. He uncovers her eyes and she's predictably enchanted. Well, I mean, it is the ocean. Gustavo laughs about how water has always brought them together--first the river and now the ocean.

Bruno points out to Rogelio that he's never taken such an interest in an employee before. Rogelio sticks to his story--he just wants to make sure everyone knows that he's the boss, damnit! He demands that Bruno go to Tuxtla, so as soon as she gets there, Bruno will be waiting for her.

Gustavo tells Ana Paula she can probably call home from the fishermen's co-op. As they're walking in that direction, they meet up with Fermin. He's in a hurry to get to his granddaughter, who cut her hand on a piece of glass some careless tourist left on the beach. Well, isn't it luck, then, that Ana Paula is a nurse, so she can win the crotchety old guy over (and the cute little pink dress probably won't hurt). He tells them she's bleeding a lot and they all head out to see her.

Margarito is worried about Rogelio being angry with him. She distracts him by telling him to bring her the "libro de recetas" (RECIPE book, dear captioner, not "book of receipts") and reading her one. Margarito finds a letter tucked in the book and recognizes Ana Paula's handwriting. "Maria, I can't take it anymore! I know the next time Rogelio hurts anyone, I won't be able to take it and he'll end up hitting me. I tried to talk to him, but all I got in return was rudeness. I'm going, but please don't let him stop taking his medicine. And I hope you can convince him to continue with his physiotherapy." Margarito comments that Ana Paula is a good person, and worries about the boss. "Yes. And here I was starting to think that because of her, we'd get the old Rogelio back. But it looks like that won't happen."

Ana Paula treats little Melina's cut. She thinks a bandage will be sufficient and she won't need stitches. Fermin tells them that ever since his son died, he and his daughter-in-law have been raising Melina. Ana Paula finishes bandaging her hand and praises her for being brave. Fermin is searching his pockets with something to pay Ana Paula with. Ana Paula insists it was her pleasure, but being a wise man Fermin says "I'm glad it was your pleasure, but work is work and it must be paid for." Ana Paula and Gustavo both continue in their refusal to accept his money and Gustavo says he has another idea about how Fermin might pay.

Fermin takes Gustavo and Ana Paula out to fish. They horse around a bit too much in the boat for my taste before getting to the fishing. Fermin doesn't seem to mind. They appear to be using shrimp as bait. Gustavo says live bait is the only way to go. He gets behind Paula with his arms around her to show her how to do the thing with the fishing pole…yeah, obviously I don't fish. Casting? Is that what it's called? Anyway, as she's, uh, handling his rod, I begin to wonder if there's any sport that doesn't present a viable backside-to-crotch teaching opportunity? Pobre de Fermin for having to watch this up close! "Are you sure you know how to fish?" There's lots of giggling and rocking the boat, in a perfectly clean and innocent way, given Fermin's watchful eyes.

They get back to shore and Ana Paula thanks Fermin for taking them out so she can show Gustavo that women are quick learners. Fermin tells Gustavo you've gotta be nice to the ladies, but careful too, cause they're smart and one day when you least expect it…"What?"…"Eh, nothing. Just saying." He hands them their catch and Gustavo says it's time to cook them. "What? You think engineers are only good for doing calculations?" Fermin begs off and says he's got to get home. Gustavo offers him the biggest fish to take home. "I'll accept, but only if you accept some advice from me. There aren't a lot of girls like this one. If you've got her, don't let her go." Gustavo won't tell Ana Paula what he said.

Vanessa is thrilled to hear that Ana Paula left. Cinthia's glad she's gone too, but upset that Rogelio smacked Efrain around because of it. Vanessa noticed those looks the other day and teases Cinthia about her concern. She tries to cover by saying "that peon" could have turned around and taken it out on her if she didn't show some concern. Vanessa doesn't buy it.

Dany is hanging around with Miguel, but just for a bit. She hates to leave her boss alone. She feels sorry for him and says he seems like a nice guy, but it makes her think that there's really no point to having a lot of money. What's it good for? "All he does is fight with his wife, his daughter's far away…she does whatever she wants, and there he is all alone." Miguel acts a little jealous and Dany laughs at him. "Please, he could be my dad!" "But he's not! You can trust men! You told me his wife is jealous, right? There must be a reason." Dany says she thinks the wife is just a grouch. She doesn't want to talk about her boss anymore, she wants to talk about them. Miguel won't drop it, though, and says it's odd that he hired her just like that. "Are you freaking kidding me?" "Shyeah! I don't like you being near other guys!" "Don't be an insecure chump. You're my guy. Now get over here and kiss me!" And you know what? The dumbass won't do it! Seriously, Miguel…we knew you weren't the sharpest tool in the shed, but this is just ridiculous!

Rosaura complains to the jewelry lady about what a terrible girl Ana Paula is being. She regrets ever telling her sister she'd take care of her kids. "Oh, don't say that! Children are always a blessing. Who else will take care of us when we're old? Besides, she left you the money Federico left her." "It didn't last. That's why I'm so angry that she left her job, just like that. She's been too spoiled, but I'm not letting her get away with it!"

Gustavo cooks the fish on a spit over an open flame. Ana Paula waxes rhapsodic about her pigeons. They mate for life. Isn't it romantic. Gustavo's parents have been together for 32 years and they still love each other. Ana Paula says once she finds love, she's not letting it go. I'm unmoved by all their loveyness. It's just so…bland!

Rogelio stews. Vanessa comes into his office to ooze all over it. She talks smack about Ana Paula. "But don't worry…I'll take care of you." Rogelio appears to be won over by her neck massage.

Ana Paula tells Gustavo they've got to go. It's getting late and she still hasn't been able to call home yet. They talk about the pigeons some more. If you love someone, set them free, etc.

"I can take care of you better than any nurse, because I've known you for years. You'll see what a good time we have." "I need a professional nurse, and you're not one." Vanessa whines and begs, but Rogelio tells her that her little game won't get her anywhere. He won't renegotiate with her father.

Fly free, pigeons. Thanks for the memories. Ana Paula gets weepy about how she loves them and wants them to be happy. They release the pigeons, Ana Paula cries, smoochies. Meh.

Vanessa is practically crying with rage. She complains to Maria, who won't stop calling her "Mrs. Vanessa." "I called you by your first name when you were Cinthia's friend, and the boss' fiancée. But now you're a married woman and I need to keep my distance." She whines that she's getting divorced for Rogelio, but he barely acknowledges her. Maria reminds her that Rogelio was really hurt when she left. "Payback's a bitch." Vanessa yells at Maria, calling her nothing more than a servant and Rogelio comes in right then and tells her to shut it! "She's not a servant, she's the woman who raised me and you don't get to walk in here and insult anyone, especially not her. Now, apologize!" Heh!

Ana Paula and Gustavo stop kissing and he apologizes for doing it. You're sorry? No, I'm sorry I had to watch it! This relationship is like a can of watery tomatoes and I want some freaking salsa! Gustavo tells her she's soooo pretty. As pretty on the inside as on the outside. Ana Paula hasn't been this happy in a long time, but she thinks he's moving too fast. Gustavo doesn't think time is important, it's about feeling. "I've never felt this before!" Ana Paula still hesitates. She wants to go slow. Gustavo can live with that, as long as he gets to be close to her. They hug. YAWN!

Vanessa can't believe the way Rogelio is treating her. He still insists on an apology or she can leave the hacienda forever. Maria tries to say it's no problem, but Rogelio says she can either apologize or leave. Cinthia walks in and asks what's wrong. "Rogelio doesn't want me to take care of him," says Vanessa, and walks out, Cinthia hot on her heels. Maria is awed that Rogelio defended her. "You don't know what that means to me, son. I love you. I love you as if you were my own son. That's why it hurts to see you suffering." Rogelio has had enough and tells her she's being too sensitive and cut it out. But Maria knows Rogelio's just a big softy.

Dany is still at work when Miguel comes in. He looks like he's trying to get a look at the boss. Dany panics, saying he knows the boss' wife is very picky and he's going to get her into trouble. He shows her the rose he's holding behind his back, but she still thinks he's just there checking up on her. Federico comes out of his office to ask Dany what's going on.

Gustavo drives Ana Paula into town. He offers to buy something to eat for the trip. Ana Paula admits she's broke, but Gustavo insists on buying some mangos. Ana Paula gives in and suggests the vendor give them some napkins as well. Melina's mom comes running up saying she looked all over for them…Melina is running a fever. Ana Paula tells Gustavo to get her luggage out of the truck and they take off.

Dany tells Federico that Miguel is here to pick her up. She introduces Miguel as "Miguel" and Federico as "my boss." Miguel belligerently introduces himself as Dany's boyfriend. "I hope you don't mind my being here, or would you rather I wait downstairs?" Federico indulgently says he doesn't mind Miguel being there as long as he doesn't interfere with Dany doing her job. "I think it's nice that you came to pick her up and that you're taking care of her." He bids them both goodnight. Dany is still pissed off. "It seems like you came here just to warn my boss that I've got a boyfriend!" "Yeah, and what's wrong with him knowing that?" Dany says there's nothing wrong with it, but there is something wrong with the way he did it.

Ana Paula says Melina's fever is too high. She gives her an "antipyretic" (and yep, that is the actual term for a fever-reducer), but wants to take her to a doctor. So the plan is, Gustavo will take them in the truck and they'll pack some ice to make cold compresses with along the way. Melina whines about her head and eyes hurting. Aw, geez, don't kill the kid!

Miguel brings Dany back to his house, but she's still pissed. She says she'll just grab her keys and go. She thinks he's showing that he doesn't trust her. Rosaura comes in. She cries to them that she was out with Elena. She needed to talk to someone because she can't take the stress! Ana Paula quit her job and left the hacienda and no one knows where she is. Just like everyone else who's heard the story, Dany says there must be a good reason for her leaving, cause she's not a flake. Rosaura just complains that it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Dany suggests Rosaura calm down and find out what happened first. Miguel says the need to find out where she is and if she's safe. Rosaura keeps complaining that she was so upset she nearly fainted. And now she's going to go outside for some fresh air because she feels like she's suffocating! Miguel is now convinced he was right not to want Ana Paula to take that job! He hopes she's ok and so does Dany.

Melina's going to be fine. Gustavo says it's thanks to her, for insisting she get treatment even though she was supposed to be getting back home. Ana Paula says anyone would have done the same. She asks if he's getting a signal on his cell phone and borrows it to call home.

Dany picks up the phone and is relieved to hear from Ana Paula. Dany lets her know how angry Rosaura is. She wants to know what happened. Ana Paula says it's a borrowed cell phone, so she'll give them the details tomorrow. "Please don't say anything to my aunt. Just that I'm fine, but I'll explain the rest in person." Rosaura comes in and realizes Dany is on the phone to Ana Paula, so she rushes for the phone, but Ana Paula hung up already. She lashes out at Dany and Miguel asking where Ana Paula is and who with.

More googly eyes between Ana Paula and Gustavo.

Vanessa explains about Rogelio's demand that she apologize to Maria. Cinthia backs him on that, saying Maria was their nanny and she raised them after their mother died. Vanessa knows that, but she's angry that Maria said she's paying for what she did to Rogelio. "Doesn't anyone care about what I suffered?" Um, no. Not really. Cinthia reminds her she was going to be patient and careful. Vanessa keeps whining, saying she only offered to take care of Rogelio because that stupid nurse left. Cinthia has to break it to her that Rogelio "asked" (I would have gone with "demanded"…"insisted"…"ordered") Bruno to bring her back. Vanessa whines like an adolescent who just got grounded…"Nooooo! What for?!" Rogelio comes outside and reminds her that he told her if she didn't apologize to Maria that she needed to leave. Vanessa gets a desperate look on her face and glues her lips to his. From this angle, it doesn't really look like he's responding.

Tomorrow: Vanessa tells Rogelio she loves him; Rogelio can't stop thinking about Ana Paula; Ana Paula thinks she's in love with Gustavo; Bruno comes to drag Ana Paula back; Bruno goes back to Rogelio with Ana Paula's conditions for returning.

If I have to pick, I'm Team Rogelio. He's an abusive ass, but he's an ass with a personality. It's only week 2. Maybe there'll be a fourth contender.

Nothing much going on IRL. I've been working on cleaning up my guitar technique. I'm preparing for an open-mic type performance next weekend and then a musical theater callback.

Wow, that was fast! Thanks very much, Kat, for the speedy and delightful recap. I think I'm a little more enthusiastic about Gustavo than you are, but I loved your comment "This relationship is like a can of watery tomatoes and I want some freaking salsa!"

I don't know know whether I'd like Gustavo so much if Rogelio were less of a turd, but in spite of his good looks and occasional flickers of humanity, I'm liking him less and less as the TN progresses. And as for Bruno, it looks as if he's been typecast after Eva Luna. Certainly that's how I see him. So at the moment I'm rooting for Gustavo even though I too would usually prefer some freaking salsa!

Good luck with the upcoming performances.

Thank You for putting that up quickly Kat. I'm impressed with Cinthia. I don't like Efrain but Cinthia sure blew her cover about liking him. If you ladies were thinking that Cinthia was being obvious when Efrain wento to see Cinthia in her room with Vanessa, she was more obvious now throwing herself in front of Efrain to protect him from Rogelio's whip. Efrain still got hit a lot more and later Cinthia was tending his wounds in her room. I'm a little surprised that Rogelio did not notice. I'm sure he was just blinded with rage and too preoccupied with finding Ana Paula. Vanessa sure noticed even though she was not there and just listened to Cinthia tell her what happened.

I really hope AP does not spend too much time saving Ro-hell. If he is an over-compensating insecure controlling angry man after being disabled he probably had those seeds in him all along just waiting to sprout. So, better a short passionate affair with Ro-hell to assure him he's still a real man to a young beautiful woman, and then AP goes off to a long happy marriage with Gustavo who likes his women independent and who does not need saving himself. (I'm speaking from sad experience here!)

Kat, you had me smiling from the beginning: "He backs away from the breakfast table for the tiny bit of privacy that affords". I shook my head during that scene, the small movement did not a bit of difference make!

I love the fresh, witty comments sprinkled throughout this: "He yells at her not to question his authority in front of the help or he'll conveniently forget she's his sister. Um, and that would be different how?". Your recaps are always a treat, and this one, especially so. Also, thank you for translating the dialog, particularly Ana's letter.

Rogelio doesn't want anyone's pity, yet he doesn't seem to be working extensively on his rehab. He is bitter but unmotivated. He simply yells and threatens Cinthia that she will be his caregiver.

Ibarramedia, I really enjoyed your comments about Cin and Efrain. It was obvious she was trying to shield and protect him but of course self absorbed Rogelio is too immersed in anger and self pity to have noticed.

I'm on Team Rogelio too Kat. I like Gustavo too Juanita, but I will take the spice over the sugar in this case!

When are Ana and Gustavo going to wise up to the selfishness and evil machinations of Rosaura? Blech.

I'm going to be away and miss the next week but look forward to catching up.

Diana

Good stuff, Kat.

Rogelio fears change in the status quo. He's getting his needs met by being a tyrant and once you go down the road of not trusting anyone it's hard to turn back. He's still not ready to try.

I'm really wondering what his father was like.

Will those darling pigeons be able to survive in the area they were released? Do they even know how to find their own food? I had the same issue with the bird release in ENDA.

Rogelio wasn't responding to Vainessa's kiss. He was done with her a long time ago. Prediction: He will use her to make Ana Paula jealous.

MentiRosie has an even bigger sense of entitlement than Rogelio. It's too bad neither she nor her brother can see through her yet.

Miguel is a dimmer bulb than we all thought and it would benefit Dany to see that.

Dear Kat,

Thanks so much. This was great and funny and spot-on.

I'm hoping that this novela picks up. I feel like we've had two weeks of the admittedly wonderful JS as Rog screaming and beating, Ana Paula smiling and demanding better behavior, and a variety of sideshows that aren't as compelling as I had hoped. I do wonder whether this basic story works in 2012, but we'll see.

I'm thinking this is the set-up for a new set of twists. I hope so! The release of the doves have to mean something.

All that said, not sure where I stand on the Rog vs. Gustavo debate. I do think that there are a few standout performances that are keeping me going. Susana Gonzalez, Ana Martin, JS, and Fabian Robles are very good, IMO, as they seem always to be. Not sure how I feel yet about Ana Brenda as Ana Paula. Love the little boy who plays poor, sad and frightened Margarito.

Thank you so much 5ft for this great great recap. I loved how you lightened up this episode. I loved your line "Dear Numbskull". Perfect fit for Rohell.

Someone needs to take that whip away. Enough is Enough already! I agree with what Vivi said all along about the master/slave relationship. Just because a man works for you DOES NOT give you the right to whip him. And why Bruno and Effer just didn't get out of the way I don't know. NO ONE deserves this type of punishment, and no job is worth that.

I was surprised Sin-thia got inbetween Rohell and Effer. I thought she was going to get that whip next.

Vainessa. What could she possibly want with Rohell? It has got to be money. Nothing else makes sense. I think she will be a bitter rival to Ana Paula if Ana Paula goes back to Rohell and that hell of a job.

Gustavo and Ana Paula. They are sweet but some passion is lacking. Maybe as time goes by it will be stronger.

ITA with you UA about MentiRosa. She needs to get a life beyond her neice and nephew. What the jewlery lady said to MentiRosa about Frederico leaving Ana Paula and Miguel's mother money? Could that be Dany's boss?

I am wondering if anyone knows how I can get English Subtitles on this show. I love watching, but do not speak spanish! Such a great Novela! Thanks for your suggestions!

5ft I just love your recaps. I find myself agreeing with all your quips. Sigh. I can see where the story is going. Gustavo will probably end up with her in the end, with his countenance as pure and good as the sun, while Rohell, who is so much more interesting will just be the detour. (Always a long detour). I am only speculating here.
CC in English-you have to fiddle around with your settings; Source 1 is usually the CC for the original language and Source 2 will probably be the English. It was that way in Eva Luna. I am forcing myself to stick with the Spanish so I can learn it.

Kat, great recap and some really fine side bar remarks. Good luck with your real life.

Did we get a clue last night? Is Maria really Rogelio's bio-mom? Which is older Sin or Rogelio?

Pobre Vainess just doesn't realize that Rogelio's "Give a damn is busted".

I worried about AP and Gus handling those birds and not washing their hands.

Rosemary

Thanks for your recap Kat. Break a leg on the musical theater cb.

Though never is a long time, I don't think I can ever be on Team Rogelio. He's abusive and I know I'm supposed to hope he changes but he has made a choice to be horrible for many years now. The complete fantasy that the love of a good woman will change him is too much for my beanie to handle. People who abuse have to make a choice to do so and not blame others when they get angry.

UA - yes, Rohello didn't respond at all to Vainy's kiss (and it was kind of funny). And yes, Miguel has rocks for brains.

Madelaine - Jewelry lady's talk with MentiraRosa was an important clue that lets the audience know that Federico is AP's real dad. Vivi was the first to guess at this. And yes he is also Dany's boss. And finally ITA with you about not understanding why able bodied people allow Rohello to beat them. Job or no job no one deserves that kind of treatment.

Gracias Kat. I always love your witty & thorough recaps. My Spanish is just too slow to pick up all the details which you so easily toss into your text. I'm on team Rohe-ster just because, flawed or not, he's the protagonist and as a character, he has no equal.(IMO) I'll be interested to see the twists and turns along the way to his redemption.

Urban: I also wondered how those released birds would survive in the wild. Would their wings even be strong enough to fly after all the years in a cage? And as for Miguel's complete idiocy vis à vis that cute squeaky Dany, I would say she would be better matched with Gustavo. Bland'n'cute. NOT how I like them.

Kat- I haven't even seen last night's episode yet, but I feel like your recap is better than the real thing. It sure is funnier!

Oy, Ro-Hell has beat yet another man! He goes even further down on my list of likeable characters now. Sorry Team Ro-Hell-io, I just can't buy into the notion of an abuser being a galan. And AP is right that the people in that house are just plain CRAZY to take that kind of abuse. Just as crazy as their "master."

I can't figure out what Vainessa wants. She doesn't seem to be hurting for money. She could just as easily stay with her rich, hot money if she wanted that. Plus, I see her as a city girl and can't exactly see her wanting to live her life in an isolated hacienda. She must realize also that she's hurting her father's bid for the contract more than she's helping. So it seems that it just comes down to her vanity. She can't bear to think that Rogelio could have gotten over her, and so she wants to prove he hasn't by making him fall for her again. But I don't think she has any intention of marrying him and having a life with him after she's snared him again.

"her rich, hot husband", not hot money. Although Elsa probably only sees dollar signs when she looks at Vainessa's husband.

It's all about the ego. She can't stand the idea that any man would reject her, especially Rogelio because he's the richest man in the area.

She will fall at the end. I feel bad for her father.

Thanks, Kat, for a great recap. I love your editorializing throughout the essay but my favorite part was your take on the "I quit/Dear Juan" note that AP left for Rogelio.

Really, the whole recap sparkles.

Karen and Vivi, I 100% agree with both of you. While I appreciate the acting of JS (he really is very expressive with that rugged face of his) I cannot hang with Team Rogelio.

Right now Rogelio is an abuser of persons, not just his employees. He terrorized Margarito last night, again, which is just unforgivable. He did the wheelchair bullying thing with Vanessa, he beat E. The writers are beating US over the head with his abusive behavior and I, for one, can't overlook it. I do not like how this character is written. Ana Paula realizes she could be next based on what she wrote Maria. Right, AP, don't forget it. The redemption of Rogelio will take the complete TN ( and a MIRACLE from heaven) to accomplish. I don't like the carnage he is leaving BEFORE that happens. Perhaps he will offer a cash payout to all of the people he abused. Based on what we have seen of his assets I think he can afford even that astronomical sum.

EJ

Thank you for the recap 5t Latina! I loved your funny sarcastic sides. Gustavo does need a little flavor.

I think the problem is that Gustavo is a merge of two characteres from Te Sigo Amando: Yulissa's (Ana Paula's) first love Oscar and the main galán Luis Angel.

Oscar was played by Fabián Robles, who plays Efraín here.

When the novela starts they are already together and going back behind Yulissa's grandmother's back. The Torres-Quintero (Yulissa, her brother and grandma/not aunt) are all that's left of a rich family that lost everything and were submerged in debt but still lived with the image of their previous wealth due to grandma's obsessions with appearances.

Oscar was a sweet boy of very humble origins and Yulissa's first boyfriend (she was just finishing high school when the story started). They were al schmaltzy and adorable and smiley like normal teenagers. Grandma would dissaprove of him for being poor.

Luis Ángel was a respected doctor, from a wealthy family and of a very strong character.

Mix Oscar and Luis Ángel and you get Gustavo: A young engineer this time, from a humble (but not poor) family who is a bit young and a dreamer but also has a strong character and is respected for his work.

I think there were two main reasons for this merge:

1)Ana Paula already has 3 men vying for her attention already, add a first boyfriend and that would be too much eau de protagonista for one story.

2)This novela is longer than TSA so the chain of events that led Yulissa to meet Luis Ángel happens much later here. Gustavo would have been introduced almost half way into the novela if they had followed the previous versions.

So this part of the storyline between Ana Paula and Gustavo is the "teen love" phase as Gustavo is still mostly Oscar at this point where Ana Paula is concerned.

Thank you so much for this recap! As always, your recaps are a complete delight.

Count me in on Team Rogelio, even though I completely understand the appeal of Gustavo as a nice, balanced, healthy, cheerful young man.

As I have said previously, in order to get through this TN you have to have a short/selective memory and realize that sometimes the writers are smoking dope. I'm just saying! LOL.

One of the things I said before is that the whippings do not "fit," and I still feel that way. Now I realize that the writers put them in there for a reason and we can't possibly overlook them, but like I said, sometimes the writers are smoking dope! What else can I say.

I think we can all assume that at some point Ana Paula will be sucked back into Rogelio's orbit. A lot of us have identified Rogelio as a galán. So with all that, I put myself in AP's shoes and think, how would I feel if I found out that this galán had beaten servants/employees because of something that had to do with me? (Both Bruno and Efrain are whipped due to something with Ana Paula.) That's just too creepy. A living hell, which is how Bruno described his experience with Rogelio.

But yet, Rogelio is a galán. So my feeling is, the writers don't "get" it or something. It's hard to explain it any better than that at the moment. Perhaps they think we're supposed to view the whippings as an anomoly brought on by the paralysis—after Rogelio "decided" that he'd rather have people fear him than pity him. I'm not saying that's the actual explanation for the writers' decision, I'm sort of grasping at straws here.

In any case, I just think it doesn't "fit" at all. We all know that Rogelio is a douchebag, the whippings are just overkill. I strap on my extra strength beanie for those scenes. I understand that not everyone else will be able to.

Moving on, I was amused by the scene where Maria is so touched that Rogelio stood up for her in front of Vainessa. Rogelio can only take so much of that sentimentality. He's such a grumpy jerk! As a whole I find his character terribly amusing and I laugh a lot. Not at the parts where the writers were smoking dope, but at his general grumpy, sour, dick-headedness. Nobody does it better than Jorge Salinas!

Tks 5ft, hilarious as usual.

I'm sure Rogelio never lets that damned whip out of sight, but can't somebody sneak into his rm when he is asleep & get rid of it?

Pigeons ALWAYS survive, they'll just find a convenient car or roof to poop on or from. At least they are out of that too small cage.

Rosaura is just a freeloader with Miguel & AP as her meal ticket. She is feigning illness too, so she doesn't have to work.

They are trying to throw us off track with the Federico name. Is he AP or Daniela's padre? Maybe both.
Do we know how old AP was when her father died?

At least we'll have some action when AP returns to Del Fuerte. Gustavo is just too bland for me.

Gustavo doesn't have a lot of complexity. He is the loved child of a happy marriage; he has no dark side. That makes him less interesting to us. He sounds like what Ana Paula needs: She can trust him and he shares her values.

Rogelio is more interesting to us because he is the polar opposite. He's angry, abusive, and he has chinks in his armor. I'm wondering whether he was a very small child when his mother died and his father an autocratic overlord.

Elvira: The whippings are sort of the mark of this story. They were in the short story and in the previous versions. Maybe that's why they kept them.

I always felt the story was much more a character study of the villain than a love story between the good leads. Ignacio's intense, painful, obsessive and unrequited love for Yulissa was the driving force of the novela. I've read many comments on Tvolucion when they uploaded TSA a couple of years ago as well as on youtube of people who want Yulissa to love Ignacio back, it's crazy.

I'm wondering if the producer or writer of LQNPA heard those comments before creating this version and they questioned to themselves what kind of response would they have if they implied that Rogelio is a possible choice for Ana Paula. Lets remember that Castro is coming off Teresa where he tried his luck by seeing how people responded to a bad girl, maybe he wanted to see how much audiences were willing to forgive a man this time. Looking back at other Castro's novelas like Rubí and Pueblo Chico, Infierno Grande I wouldn't be surprised at all if that was the case.

Jarocha

Jarocha, I definitely think you're onto something there! Thanks for your insights.

Vivi- I forgot to add in my post earlier. Thank you for telling me about MEPS. I have been watching it in late night and really like it. I have never seen FC in anything before, still missing EY from DA. I loved that novella.

Loved the recap 5ft. Okay the Gus/AP pairing isn't doing it for me. The chemistry is bland. Although Rog is a pain in butt, he brings out AP's passion when she stands up to him. Speaking of which, now both Bruno and Efrain have been the recipients of Rog's whip. One day, someone is going to get that whip from him and whip him like he's whipped the help. My bet is on Efrain no spoiler, I'm just guessing.

From what Rosaura said about the money Federico left it's most likely that he is AP's father that makes her and Vainessa half-sister’s. What a whiney pest Vainessa is. She really gets on my nerves. I did LOL at the end when she plastered her pouty mouth over Rog's in that pathetic kiss and he didn't even close his eyes.

Tks 5ft, hilarious as usual.

Madelaine so glad you are enjoying MEPS. Be on the lookout for the Pear Robe for us! :)

Jarocha, I think you're on to something. I remember the response that people had about Teresa and the lively debates we had about if she could be redeemed. Maybe they are going that same route with Rog. So far, in spite of his bad behavior and temper, I'm on Team Rog too.

5ft, enjoyed the recap. On Miguel, my theory is at some level he remembers the fights his parents had about mom cheating with the boss. I'm impressed with Dany for standing up to him about his stupid jealousy.

Sorry for the double post.

Madelaine, Here is a list of Fernando Colunga must sees.

Amor Real
Alborada
Pasíon

Unfortunately the Amor Real DVD was really butchered, the other 2 aren't that bad.

Some of his earlier stuff isn't so good, mainly due to the producer, Salvador Mejia, the worst.

DA was my 1st novela also & I loved it, but then I discovered FC.

Kat, before I forget, let me wish you good luck in your current artistic endeavors. You are truly talented.

I almost fell off of my chair reading your translation of Ana Paula's letter of resignation. Hilarious.

I just finished a TN (CME) not caring much for Gus as Matias and now here he is so far as Señor Blandnbeige. Matias was moody and mopey and prone to jump to conclusions and now Gus so far seems to have a perfect disposition. I'm not sure which is worse.

In CME, Matias was very respectful of Adriana's reluctance to consummate their relationship precipitously, but somehow on a boat excursion the following day the boat conveniently developed engine trouble stranding them on a remote island and thus nature took it's course... I was suspicious about that.

Variopinta, you're right, if the birds can make their way to a city with a town square or park they'll be fine. However, I was a little surprised that they were able to fly so well after being cooped up like that for a number of years.

If I were Ana Paula, I'd never return but of course we know she will. It'll be interesting to see how she's lured back into his web.

Carlos

Madelaine, I too really enjoyed MEPS, but, to be honest, I was rather disappointed in FC in that TN. I didn't find his acting all that compelling, and his short haircut drove me nuts. After you get done with MEPS, you really much watch Alborada. There's where you'll see why so many of us are crazy about FC.

Miguel is a "box o' rocks."

I agree that "Alborada" is a Colunga must-see. It's the last novela I watched from beginning to end. I was struck by how much his acting had improved. I had seen him in "Maria la del Barrio" 10 years before and thought he was pretty bad.

I also just saw Alborada recently when it re-aired and was discussed again on CarayCaray. He is very delicious in that. But he provides plenty of fodder for fantasies in MEPS too. Oddly enough, Esmeralda was the first tn I ever saw, and I never watched another till I discovered this site 3 years ago. I don't remember him at all from that, but I did remember Lety Calderon. He was pretty forgettable in those early roles.

Ah, wise Jarocha:
Thanks as always for your clarifications and musings. Interesting about Castro's experiment with 'Teresa".

I'll try to think of this as a character study and not a romance. I think I just want AP to run for the hills away from such an unhealthy but possibly passionate choice as Rogelio.

Always a joy to hear from you.

EJ

Thanks, 5ft. I loved your "translation" of AP's letter to Ro-hell and your take on the fishing trip (which, as a strict vegetarian, I really couldn't stomach. Glad I didn't have to recap it.lol)

I am very confused by all the conjecture about Federico. When I did the personajes post I got the impression that Federico left the woman who had his child without even knowing she was pregnant (therefore unable to give/leave money for the child.) Her name is Mariana...have they named AP's mom? Also, didn't Squeaky D. say her dad abandoned her mom before she was even born?

I maybe have missed a lot, but it just seems like Federico is not APs dad.

Also great comments everyone.

Ibarramedia: ITA about Cinthia, and was so impressed with Cinthia’s concern for Efrain that I really like Efrain more. I really felt sorry for Efrain, and, well, he’s kinda cute.

Urban: Love your comments. Yeah, Rohell needs therapy, Gustavo doesn’t. Gustavo never will, and he’s just pure goodness, and his parents must have been perfect. If Rohell uses Vainessa to make AP jealous that will be another similarity to Jane Eyre. And of course, Gustavo is so much better for AP than Rohell. I just think Rohell is more interesting. And ITA; don’t care if Miguel and Dany get together. Let her find someone smarter, maybe Miguel can end up with that other chick that fell in love with him at first site, heaven knows why.

LXV; I too, worried about the birds. But I was glad we wouldn’t have to see AP squeezing them so tightly.

Elvira: ITA with the beanie and Rohell. I think the writers just weren’t smart enough to back off on the beatings. His bark should be worse than his bite, OK? Yeah, the writers must have been smoking dope.

Variopinta: Funny remark about the pigeons. True.

Sara- I haven't seen last night's episode yet, so all I have to go on for my theory about AP being Fed's daughter/Vain's sister are these things:

-Fed had an affair with his secretary.
-AP's mom was a secretary.
-AP's mom and dad fought a lot about something when AP was a baby, and then he left the family.
-Tia MentiRosa knows that AP and Miguel do not have the same father.
-Much has been made about how much AP and Vain look alike.
-In the opening credits, there is a montage of AP, Vain and Fed together.

Since I didn't see last night, I don't know what clues the writers may throwing out about Dani possibly being Fed's love child, but if that is the case, then I believe they are false clues. There's too much pointing to AP being the love child.

Thanks, Kat for another great serving of snark. Gustavo is a cutie, but I agree "This relationship is like a can of watery tomatoes and I want some freaking salsa!"

RoHell is a mess, but he has more substance than cutie-pie. I would even let AnaPaula influence him without a romance between them. They both have a degree of dogged persistence that can work on each other.

La Paloma

Emarie, yeah, totally agree about Rohell's bark being worse than his bite. I think Jarocha has hit the nail on the head—the producer is trying to see how far they can push it, just like they did with "Teresa."

I did a little research on the previous incarnation of this story (the 1996 version in particular), and I understand a lot more now about what's going on—the similarities and the differences between the two versions of this story are interesting!

I now feel more like the whippings are "shoehorned" in. Apparently, as Jarocha tells us, the whip has been an element of all versions of this story, so the writers felt like they had to keep it in this one too. Yet, because of the changes made to the Rogelio character in this new version, I feel like Rogelio's bark should be worse than his bite, and that's why the whippings don't fit very well anymore (IMO).

Kat: like fine wine, amiga! Another very enjoyable read. Watery tomatoes for sure--Gus and AP spooning is sand-man material. Who needs sleeping pills when these two are on screen together?

I know I'm chiming in late, but does anyone remember how old AP was when her mom died, how long they've been living with the auntie? Vivi can add to her list the thing about the aunt going through all the money that Federico left AP's mother.

I was just wondering because she said her mom gave her those doves, and since they live in captivity 12-15 years, they've potentially been cooped up a very long time. (I got curious and hod to look it up). Of course in the wild it's more like a 5-yr lifespan. Enjoy the few hours you have left birdies!

Kelly

It would be interesting if those birds found their way back to her in Tuxtla.

Although I still wonder about the fan-tail pigeons in ENDA. What did their new flock think of those tail feathers?
