Abismo de pasión #1 3/12/12 And the story begins... with tween love triangles, mistaken identities, witches and habaneros
At the Castanedo house bedroom, Este and Augusto are talking about what happened with Alfonsina and that Rosendo did not believe her… Augusto is distant, thoughtful… then he asks Este if she ever regretted marrying him… absolutely not… she always liked the mature men… she says she only liked him… Augusto insists wouldn’t you have liked better to marry a man like Rosendo Arango, a rich man, owner of the biggest processing plant in the region, an enviable wealth and social place… I am just a farmer… doing well but will never reach Rosendo. Este assures Augusto she married him because she loves him very much, now more than ever… She asks why all the questioning… Augusto says don’t worry.. she won’t let it go.. she knows him… he claims when he came out to the garden, he was talking with Alfonsina and… (in comes Elisa to interrupt the chat)… The couple kisses Elisa good nite… Augusto says he has to go to the study to look at some papers… (apparently he changed his mind about telling her about Alfonsina’s accusations)…
previews: Carmina continues to feed the case for Este and Rosendo lovers to Augusto... Augusto confronts Este...

Damien is a little snot like his Mama and Elise is sweet like her Mama.
Am not liking Carmina. She is going to cause alot of trouble. Poor Este looks like she is going to be blamed for something she didn't do. I like Alejandro Camacho, he was great in PVAA. He seems really good here.
Can't stand Alfosina. What a b*tch.
Her poor husband, no wonder he is getting some on the side. She should listen to her brother the Padre.
Madelaine, I'm honored you thought I might have done the recap. No way sister, it was our own Marta.
Why is Carmina so tan and her sister (and everyone else) so pale? In fact, even Carmina's hands are not nearly as tan as her face. Sorry, but that actress kind of freaks me out. She's like the female version of Roberto Palazuelos. But creepier.
Bwahahaha! Rene Casados as the padre! Um yes, cast as predicted (or requested). Too funny.
First Impression: Not so bad for a first episode. Sadly, I kind of miss what's going on over at El Talisman. I'm going to get a good night's sleep and then slide on over to the Fresno avocado orchards.
This is one of your finest recaps! Thanks for giving us such a thorogh intro to Abismo.
More in the AM.
Thanks again,
EJ
I can tell I am going to like this one. The cast is great. I've never seen Luwika in anything and I really liked her. I hate that Alfonsina is so hell-bent on destroying Estefania.
Ok, who thought of Pigorio when the box of Salsa Verde rolled off the assembly line?
Did anyone notice that the theme songs were all being played about 10 minutes in? I think after the first commercial break. What's up with that. I guess not a big thing, but I am a creature of habit and I want the theme song first, then the show.
Man, Alfosina needs a chill pill. Yikes! And Sabine, have to say, another jealous hussy role, but she does know how to pull those off ( just wish she'd put the tanner away for awhile).
If I was ten I'd be in luurrrvvv with Gael. What a doll! And that scene with him and Padre, awww my Rene, so precious.
Yeah, I'm thinking this won't be too bad even if it's at 9:00. Characters are pretty defined and I"m betting not too much in the way of unpredictable plots, but they had me at the opening ( I could stand some gratuitous shirtless scenes a few times a week...wink wink).
----
So true! She and IckyMicky look like they were separated at birth!
I've never seen Sabine in anything except EPDA...which I watched on DVD. She sure looks different.
ITA with everyone that this is a stellar cast (with more good actors yet to appear).
Ah Cesar! As charming and insidious as always. Can't wait to see what happens.
Diana
'chirriones!'... poor thing he is doing whatever he can to impress Elisa, and everything turns out upside town for him...
LOVE LOVE Cesar Evora in this character, even if i have seen him twice already doing same char, esp in Canaveral de Pasiones. such a contrast, he was so nhappy and nice interacting with Augusto and with Damian and with Este... vs with Alfonsina...
Wasn't Alejandro Camacho paired up with Blanca Guerra in Alma de Hierro? he is a really good actor.
LOVE the way the kids are acting. LOVED Damian's face of sadness when he saw his mom crying in her room after the argument she had with Rosendo... it shows that he is not happy because his parents are not happy together... compared to Elisa who can't be happier with her parents and with Gael who feels he missed out on having parents period, even though he had the best 'father' ever ...
man, Carmina is EVIL!! EVIL!!
I also enjoyed the episode itself. I liked the tension and chemistry between the adults, and I liked the kids. Little Gael is our favorite kid from La Fuerza del Destino. We've seen little Damian in a ton of tns starting back with Tontas, and little redhead Elise is currently in Telemundo's Corazon Valiente which is on at the exact same time (I recorded it last night) and is even cuter when they unleash her huge mass of curly red hair. :) She also got dressed up for a party with the adults in last night's CV episode. I'm sure her parents have mutiple tvs and recorders going in their house to capture their daughters two debut shows.
Above all, I love Rene C as a priest. Just perfect. I'm glad to see Sabine M. looking well (and her usual tan self) after her illness during Mi Pecado. I've caught glimpses of her in a daytime tn, Ni Contigo Ni Sin Ti, where she plays a respectable middle-aged business woman. But in this one, she's back to her usual slutty, envious, homewrecker role. She's good at it.
btw, since it is showing at 1/2 hr eps in mexico, they didn't bother to cut off the credits for 2nd episode.. lol i do like the intro.. even if it is full of spoilers for 1st week or so.
You would have thought Agusto would be suspicious that Carmina was the one meeting with Rosendo after catching her coming back into the house, despite their little play act that they hate each other.
Padre: you had no reason to accuse Este mercilessly... what you did was ill intentioned gossip... which can hurt others very much, especially when you know the evilthinkers in this town...
Alfo: it is this town who has to get to know this 'woman'... it is about time they get to know who she really is... time for them to stop adoring her calling her 'the pride of la Ermita'...
Carmina - LOL Capn Sylvia. I've seen her in several 'novelas and was thinking last night that she is a female version of our George Hamilton. ;o)
_Padre Tarde a/k/a Padre Tad a/k/a Padre 'lupe..... I wonder if he'll be as bad as our Paddy Taddy from FELS.
Alfonsina .... no wonder Cesar E. is looking elsewhere for comfort.
word verification---tanstr
Must have picked up on my comments about Sabine Moussier! LOL
You told the story so masterfully and filled in many details that sailed right by me. You are tops!
I always have trouble getting names and relationships straight in the first few days so I'm sure I'll be referring back to your recap to get myself grounded.
Sara, the green salsa caught my eye too -- and of course I waxed nostalgic about the Pig. Sniff.
The kids are impressive, endearing, and each with a distinct personality. Let's hope their adult selves live up to their youthful promise.
I could really see the young Paloma growing up to be Livia Brito. The others will require a greater leap of imagination, I think.
I enjoyed seeing some old friends, precious kids, and gorgeous plump habañeros. I especially like Carmina (I especially enjoyed her in La Madrastra) and Estefania (I think I first saw her in Amigas y Rivales and was bewitched).
Of course whom I'm really watching for is Altair Jarabo. I suspect there be a few episodes before she appears.
Carlos
Carmina/Sabine is one actress who can send my husband screaming from the room, and I don't think I've ever seen her looking quite so scary as here with that massive streaked gray Medusa hair framing her overcooked face. Yes! I so noticed that her hands were so much paler - huh?!?!
Have to admit Rene looks good in his priestly duds!
I'm not sure I'll follow it although I do like the acting lineup - well, except for the 3 leads!!! LOL! The kids are great, and I like most of the supporting cast.
Yeah, typical TN setup - nasty wife spews hatred all over small town, ruining several people's lives. What else is new in telenovela land?
How embarrassing for Univision that they had to banish their own prime-time production to daytime - and so quickly! I hope this teaches them to get a decent story/writing and editing crew next time. Was it Venevision who let them down? Sort of like what happened with Los Herederos del Monte which was produced for Telemundo by a South American company - a total mishmash/circo of a plot that never went anywhere (it kept reversing on itself). In both cases it looked liked the writing and editing had been hired out to someone's 9th grade drama class.

Thy names are Mark and David. ¡Qué picante!
I think I am completely on board with this one. I am forever grateful to Marta for the detailed recap of this information heavy capitulo.
Daisy - I was just asking about you yesterday and hoped that you knew about the new show. So glad to hear from you again!
I had watched 3 episodes of this show before (5, 11 and 12, I think) but decided to watch the first episode on saturday to comment on it.
I agree that little Gael is adorable and I loved his relationship with Padre Lupe. This relationship was also one of my favorite things from Cañaveral and I was glad to see it here. In fact, all the kids were treated fairly and I'm glad for that. Little Paloma was so cute too in that little glimpse we saw.
I got to meet Ludwika Paleta during a visit to the Televisa sets with some college classmates back when Duelo de Pasiones was on, she is incredibly gorgeous in person. My best friend got to meet her and her sister Dominika (Lily in MEPS and Jimena in TDA) after seeing them in The Vagina Monologues and he was utterly besotted with them. So, I can totally see her as the town's beauty.
I'm glad to see Sabine Moussier feeling better, unfortunately that means she went back to the tanning salon. I think she had better coloring in Mi Pecado even though she was very sick back then, but that was obviously because she couldn't tan during that time. Laisha Wilkins and Jessica Coch made casting for this role but I heard they were considered too young, which is funny, since they both have a wider age gap with Angelique Boyer than what Azela Robinson had with Daniela Castro back in the day. But, of course, there's was also Zepeda to consider this time. Back then Juan Soler was much younger.
I agree with always liking César Évora in the same role. I enjoy the familiarity, lol.
Jarocha
I like the adult actors so far, but am not so sure that I'll feel the same when the "kids" grow up and take center stage. Not a big fan of A. Boyer or David Zepeda.
Reading the recap, I just KNEW that Carmina was Rosendo's amante. That is perfect!!
Robey
Normally I hate it when anyone tells a woman it's her own fault her husband strays; he wouldn't if she were a better wife and gave him what he wanted at home, etc., but here I can sort of agree. I don't TOTALLY agree; it's still his fault, but Alfonsina is so goshdarn nasty who'd want to stick with her?
I love the kids. It will be a little sad when we timejump. The Gael actor was excellent as poor doomed César in Mi Pecado as well. The heartwrenching scene where he was found drowned and his father carried him back to the house is stuck in my brain. I know all he had to do in that scene was go limp and not move but he did it SO WELL. Few actors, especially kids, can look so convincingly and tragically dead.
When I saw that salsa verde coming off the line I immediately thought, "NO! I said I wanted RED salsa!" Ha.
Your enthusiasm for the story is contagious. Both your recap and comments were wonderful.
I loved the child actors. The young Elisa with the freckles on her nose is a doll but it will take a beanie to transform her into Angelique.
Carmina and Alfonsina...well this looks to be a shrew fest, alright. Jarocha, how nice that you got to meet Lukwika Paleta. She is so beautiful! Is she of Mexican and Polish heritage? Those Polish women can have the most gorgeous bone structure—I remember the model Paulina from 20 years ago.
Like you, Cap'n, I heard a lot of mush-mouth pronunciation last night and my Spanish captions weren't good at all. Looks like I'll be hitting rewind and the dictionary a lot to recap.
Sara, I saw the salsa verde coming off the line and my mind went immediately to avocados. Avocado on corn tortillas, salt, a little habanero sauce, ah...life is good.
Vivi, I love Rene C as the good father 'Lupe. Was it just my imagination or was he wearing less guyliner than usual last night? We are going to need his character to keep his nasty sister Alfonsina in line.
EJ
Did want to ask, if anyone knows, and I'm a bit lazy to look this up right now, but does anyone know if the creative team on this TN is the same as Mi Pecado? I'm seeing a lot of similarities already with cast/characters, plot and location.
Here's an adorable scene
of her in the also very popular El Abuelo y Yo, with the now film actor Gael García Bernal. She was such a pretty kid too. It was the first kiss ever for them both, captured forever in video. The things an actor ends up sharing with the world!
Daisinjay: The original story of Abismo, Cañaveral de Pasiones, was written by the same team that wrote Mi Pecado. The begining of Mi Pecado and some scenes were an homage to Cañaveral, that's why you find them so simmilar.

The opening credits being late is something I can't explain unless Univision traditionally does this for all programs on the night of a premiere. I never bothered to notice before. Telemundo is notorious for putting the credits much later, but I don't see that there is any reason for it.
Little Paloma does look a lot like Livia Brito; that's a great casting job.
There is a third rich family in Mi Pecado and Lucrecia ends up married to the kid from that story, who is the bad guy when he grows up and kills his father who we thought was going to be the big bad until then. Also, Lucrecia's mother treats her very poorly she is the result of incest as her father abused her when she was younger. That was all very intense.

"The credits for UFCS were shown about 15 or 20 minutes in last night, as well. Is this the new thing they're doing? I noticed when I watched TV in Mexico that the credits would usually run in the middle of the show. I don't like it. I want to hear the credits as my cue that the show is starting!"
TvAzteca shows their novelas at the half hour mark: 7:30, 8:30, 9:30. To attract people to watch their shows instead, Televisa decided to put their credits at the same time as those novelas start.

I've been watching this online and am liking it so far. So I'm glad to 'start over' with Univision too. I just love the girl who plays young Elisa in that role - she is adorable :)
I can see lil Paloma growing up to be Livia Brito.
I can see lil fair Gael growing up to be Mark Tacher.
I can see dark, pale lil Damian growing up to be David Zepeda.
They're gonna have to do some 'splaining with lil' Elisa, though. Baby Elisa has very dark eyes, while Angelique Boyer has blue eyes. Maybe she gets blue Fresh Looks contacts when she grows up. I guess the pulled back hair = Angelique Boyer with pulled back hair.
I was kind of falling asleep during part of the show...was the woman in the office Carmina, or was it another woman, or do we not know? They seemed to be trying to imply/mislead it was Estefania but is that definitely/probably not the case? She does seem very sweet and devoted to her family.
I'm hoping little Elisa here will carry those scenes as they are meant to and steals our hearts too.
Jarocha
how long ahead is mexico transmissions from ours? will they run into trouble if they extend it in mex?
Thank you, thank you, thank you. I truly appreciate your tech savvy and generosity—they are a boon to all recappers.
I do hope you come by a lend a comment once in a while, just so we can continue to praise your genius.
Thanks, again, for doing this.

"in mex it is showing in 1/2 hr eps.."
In México they are showing 1 hour eps. I just checked and today they will show episode 37.

Julia- They never showed the face of the woman in the office. It was just to throw us off, because obviously Estefania is loyal to her husband and her sister is the one boinking Rosendo. It also seems like Carmina likes her sister's clothes, so it wouldn't be a surprise if she "borrowed" something to wear.
I've been watching the replay of MEPS at midnight so I agree with above posters about her resembling Roberto Palazuelos. Something about tanning darker than your lips freaks me out. Also interesting watching the Paleta sisters. Thanks for the info!
I did a marathon of Corazon Salvaje on DVD to finish up over the weekend so I wouldn't have Angelique or Rene interference. They spoke beautifully in that TN, so if they are failing to articulate in this one, it's definitely the direction.
Just wanted to say again, THANK YOU to Marta for starting us off. Lord have mercy I would have been lost without her recap.
I love that this episode featured habaneros and that people were actually talking about their product and working with it, unlike some ranchos where people seem to do nothing but fight. (You avocado and raisin farmers know who I mean!) I also like the familiar faces and Rene Casados in his Padre role.
Jarocha, thanks for the insights and info about the Paleta sisters. I agree with Marta, Ludwika looks more beautiful than ever.
La Paloma
I seem to not be alone in not being a big fan of A. Boyer or D. Zepeda...I didn't watch Teresa, and was bored with her character's storyline in Corazon SalvajeI liked Zepeda's character in Soy Tu Duena but found his acting in La Fuerza del Destino to have no fuerza. Or chemistry with his co-protagonist...I forgot her name already. Maybe Zepeda's just not cut out to be "the good guy"? Maybe his chemistry will be better with Angelique.
I'm glad to see Ludwika back. She looks as good as she always has. Sabine really needs to lay off the self-tanner and hair dye. Although maybe they can cast her and Roberto Palazuelos as siblings in another telenovela...they'd have the same orange-y glo. And I've missed Cesar Evora. I didn't like his character in Llena de Amor but I'll watch just about any telenovela he's in.
Augusto the cranky and insecure and Alfonsina tiring us already only in 2nd ep for sure! talk about planting weed and dancing to the tune the villainess wants you to...
final scene was a hoot!
one more note about yesterday that they teased us with but i think will be figured out tonight:
Padre is receiving money from someone for Gael's expenses... does that mean one of Gael's parents knows about him?
drum roll... this mystery might be settled tonight.
