Abismo de pasión #1 3/12/12 And the story begins... with tween love triangles, mistaken identities, witches and habaneros

Recap by Marta Ivett - Let's plunge right in!!

Here we go…
La Ermita, Yucatan… some kind of cultural celebration taking place at the center gazebo with music… very colorful typical outfits for the area… everyone happy…
Artisan stands, food, etc

Then we see fields of habanero chiles… two boys and a girl, about 10 y.o. running through the fields while the adults pick the chiles…

They run and run right down a dirt road where they meet another girl, the boys run right by her, but Elisa (the young girl) stops for a minute before continuing… The other girl, Paloma, comes to where they are taking their clothes off (no, don’t think perverted things) to jump into a pond/quarry… the boys throw stones/sticks at Paloma so she runs away scared, Elisa is mad at the boys… the ‘guero’ of the boys tells her they did it because she is the granddaughter of the town’s witch… Elisa says maybe now she will tell her grandma and she will turn them (the boys) into toads!! LOL!
The boys get scared and jump in the water… Elisa laughs it off…

At the Arango hacienda house a woman is trying on dresses in front of a mirror, asking the maid (Antonia) if her son is around… The woman (Alfonsina) is talking ill of the other boy, Gael, does not understand why her son has become friends with Gael and why her own brother has taken Gael, who is an ordinary orphan, in. (Padre Lupe)… the maid justifies Padre Lupe, but the woman, bitter, says Padre should not. She is angry that her husband agreed to have them go to another family’s dinner party… Maid asks her if she does not want to go. Alfonsina says if I don’t go my husband will love going alone, and that is not something she will allow.

At the chile processing plant… the foreman (Gabino) is ordering/shouting around downtalking the workers… he goes in the office, finds his boss Rosendo, the plant owner, doing hanky panky with a woman in a white dress, he interrupts of course…  Gabino seems miffed about it but stays quiet… he tells Rosendo that his wife (Alfonsina) was looking for him. No, she was not here but she asked for you. Rosendo sends message to her that when he is done (working) he will go…

Back at the house, Antonia comments that Dona Estefania is pretty, Alfonsina downplays it that that is what everyone says but… ..

Said pretty (and happy) woman Estefania (Ludwika Paleta, looking prettier than ever) is walking around town (apparently with the same white dress of the woman that was just at Rosendo’s office at the plant)… meets with her maid Lolita [Dolores] (Eugenia Cauduro)… Estefania came to the plant to personally pick the chiles for a sauce she will make tonight for the dinner party.  Gabino comes to meet them and is talking rude to Estefania, saying he is surprised she came by the plant… knowing her husband himself is the one that farms them in the area. Apparently this is not the first time Lolita has or witnesses a confrontation with Gabino since she uses a rough/sharp tone to tell him that Dona Estefania wanted the habaneros for making a special sauce for tonight’s dinner precisely for Dona Alfonsina. Gabino claims if they had requested it, he would have sent them with a worker. Estefania insists she wanted to pick them personally.

Gabino apparently has the hots for Estefania from the way he looks at her as she leaves.

At the farm, Rosendo Arango (the owner of the processing plant) and Augusto Castanedo (Estefania’s husband, the owner of the farm), apparently these two have been friends for many years… Augusto reminds Rosendo about the dinner party tonight… Rosendo wants to talk about something personal.. they have always been honest with each other… apparently Alfonsina has always had issue with Estefania, so Rosendo asks Augusto if the dinner party will serve to cool things out between the women. Augusto says Estefania has always been in the best disposition to conciliate… Rosendo says yes, your wife is, but mine… anyway… we will be there.

At the Castanedo house, the dinner prep is going in the kitchen. Estefania and Lolita are working when little Elisa walks in… Elisa asks her mother if she can invite Damian (Rosendo’s son) and Gael (the orphan who lives with Padre Lupe). Estefania sends Elisa with Lolita to get her bath… Elisa wants her mom to also be very pretty tonight.

Estefania goes in her room and pulls out a very pretty dress from her closet… (apparently she is wearing the white dress of the woman that was with Rosendo)… In walks her sister Carmina, who apparently envies what Estefania has as far as money and attention from her husband… then Carmina brings up the subject of the guests for tonight, Rosendo and his wife Alfonsina, who seems to be the royalty in town, or at least they behave like it, especially Alfonsina. Estefania says Alfonsina is the wife of my husband’s best friend so that is enough reason to be cordial with them.  They then talk about the men in town going after Carmina… Carmina says the ‘good catches’ are taken already… Estefania gives Carmina a dress for the evening party she bought for her. Carmina hugs her but when we see Carmina’s face she looks like she really hates the dress and/or looks constipated…

At the church, Padre Lupe does not want to give Gael permission to go to the dinner, even if Elisa has invited him. It is an adult gathering, not for kids, according to P Lupe. Gael pulls the ‘but Damian got permission from his parents, it is unfair that I don’t get it’ card.. Padre knows that Gael is crazy about Elisa and does not think Gael is old enough to be that nutso for a girl… Padre knows both Damian and Gaellike her. So no cigar…
(Apparently Rene C had a minor accident while closing the armoire in there,… Gael asks if he hurt himself, Padre Lupe says it did not hurt, he is atomic), Padre says he doubts his sister Alfonsina will give Damian permission to go to the party either.

At hacienda Arango… Alfonsina does not want Damian to come along… even if all the kids of the Ermita were going, you are not! … here comes Rosendo to the rescue… he lets Damian go to the party…  Damian walks away and Alfonsina is ready for battle… she is offended that Rosendo contradicted her, but even more so because he will take Damian precisely to that house (Rosendo immediately guesses where this argument is going) Rosendo does not want to argue… he will go shower, Alfonsina says its too late for that… he came home from the processing plant so late… she questions what he was doing there… Rosendo says same as I always do… work. Alfonsina is not done provoking an argument. She says she heard Estefania went to the plant today… did you see her? Nope. Haven’t seen her all day. Excuse me, will go get ready before it gets even later.

At Castanedo house, Augusto is calling for Estefania but Carmina comes and tells him Este is busy and she helps him with tying his tie… Augusto thanks her for staying for the dinner, Carmina says she would do anything for him, dear bro in law. Augusto compliments on her looks. Carmina  does not waste a chance to keep feeding the fire with the idea that there is something between Estefania and Rosendo, saying Estefania took time to make herself prettier than ever for his best friend, and of course for his wife.

Augusto goes to find Estefania… Este and Elisa are setting up the table… Augusto thinks both the daughter and the wife are looking beautiful… he tells Este her sister was right, she looks even prettier than ever… she also made her special habanero sauce… she tells him she went to Rosendo’s plant to pick them herself, since he told her that at Cielo Abierto (I guess that is a store place in the farm or the name of the farm) the trucks had already left… Augusto is surprised/confused, does not remember telling her that. She brushes it off saying surely she heard it from one of the farm workers.

The Arango’s arrive… the four of them stare at each other, Estefania and Rosendo are smiling happy, Alfonsina looks like she is constipated, Augusto looks contempt. The children (Damian and Elisa) greet each other’s families… we see the usual forced (Alfonsina) and unforced greetings. Carmina comes out… Estefania sends the kids out to play. The adults walk ahead to in the house, Carmina looks a bit annoyed…

At church, Padre Lupe realizes Gael is gone, and guesses where he went to.. he is not happy ‘canijo’(naughty) boy, you will see later… as if you could do what you want…

Estefania stands to serve wine, Rosendo offers to help her… Carmina teases Alfonsina saying her husband is so detail-oriented… Alfonsina gets up with excuse to tell Damian to wash his hands before donner… Augusto has come out to get the kids… The boys have climbed a tree to find a nest that Elisa spotted earlier… (Gael arrived running and when he heard Elisa wanted a nest that was on the tree, he offered to bring it down for her, definitely these two boys have already entered a competition for Elisa’s attention)
Alfonsina comes out after Augusto and begins nagging at Damian to come down from the tree. Augusto summons the kids (including Gael, whom he does NOT undermine) to go inside to eat dinner… Alfonsina claims it must have been Gael’s idea for the boys to climb the tree, Augusto is surprised at her accussing attitude… Alfonsina continues argues questioning Augusto why he gives Gael the same treatment as Damian… Augusto says because he is also my daughter’s friend…Alfonsina claims Gael does not deserve the same treatment as her son (Damian). Augusto gets a bit miffed at her and questions since when is she so against that boy Gael… since tonight, right? Tonight when you were FORCED to come to my house for dinner? He knows she did not want to come and he knows it is because Alfonsina can’t stand his wife Este… what is it you have against my wife?... Since her denying it won’t get her anywhere, she says alright, will tell you why… because she is betraying you with none other than my own husband! Rosendo and her are lovers!...  Augusto’s eyes tear up almost instantly, he is in shock… Alfonsina won’t let him recover… she says from his reaction she can tell he knew it or at least knew something was not quite right… he is hurting really bad and denies it as absurd, silly… Alfonsina has no doubts that Rosendo is betraying her precisely with Este. Augusto demands proof.. .she has none… Don’t you see how Rosendo treats Este? Augusto claims Este loves him. Alfonsina says she won’t lose Rosendo, will keep him with her at whatever cost. Augusto seems confused but finds strength to say that he does not need to ‘retain’ his wife because he is sure of her love and because I love her! (Augusto returns inside the house while Alfonsina rolls her eyes and stays there)..

Inside, Este and Rosendo talk very cordially about the business in front of a very annoyed Carmina… Rosendo says Augusto has the town’s prettiest women in his house.  Este notices Carmina’s attitude and tells her Rosendo just complimented the two of them… Carmina says she does not have to fake flattery at the compliments of a person she can’t stand… She takes her exit…
Este tries to appologize for Carmina.. she is glad he is there… Rosendo is kissing her hand just as Augusto and Alfonsina come back in the living room… Augusto stops in his tracks while Alfonsina looks at him with a ‘see?? I told you so!’ facial smirk…

Padre Lupe arrives at the house looking for Gael. Carmina meets him at the door walks him in, right where the other 4 are sitting… Augusto invites Padre Lupe to stay for dinner, but he came just to get Gael… As Este takes Padre Lupe to kitchen,  Alfonsina again nags… this time about Padre Lupe not greeting her personally. Rosendo snags at her that Padre said ‘Good evening everyone’. But obviously that was not enough for her.

In kitchen, Lolita is serving the kids desert… but Padre comes in and takes Gael immediately with him, appologizing for the ‘trouble’… Elisa asks Padre Lupe not to punish Gael… she invited him… Padre claims he did not give Gael permission and he knew it.Gael looks so sad…

Este asks Lolita to warm up dinner for the adults… Elisa comments to Damian wondering if Padre Lupe will punish Gael.. Damian is a bit rough saying if he does, then Gael asked for it, why did he come (without permission)?

When Este returns to living room, turns out Alfonsina has put a script of ‘not feeling well’ so she immediately summons Rosendo and Damian for going home immediately. Rosendo appologizes to Este for leaving like this with the dinner served…
When the Arangos leave, Carmina makes a cold comment about the attempt to conciliate the families with this evening was in vain.

At church, Padre is mad at Gael… Gael says you should punish yourself too, because you lied to me too, you said Damian would not get permission to go, but he was there.
Padre says perhaps his parents did not have anyone to leave him with. Gael then gets sad reminding Padre he has no parents… Padre gets mushy as a marshmallow. Gael is resentful that everyone has family around except for him, even Padre has his sister and even the town witch has her granddaughter, but I don’t have anyone..Padre reminds him he has Padre, God and the Virgin Mary. Don’t cry anyore! You either!... I am not! (SWEET SCENE!) For this time I will forget what happened and there will be no punishment. Gael is about to go to sleep but turns back around and appologizes to the Padre and hugs him. Padre gives him the blessing…

At Castanedo house Elisa is in bed with her mom.. Elisa mentions to her what the boys did to Paloma, and asks about the ‘witch of the town’. Este explains that Ramona (the witch) is a ‘curandera’ (herb healer). Elisa says then if that woman helps cure people, then she is not bad. Este confirms that Ramona and her granddaughter are not bad.. Elisa says the towns people talk bad about them. Este says people make up things about other people… These two are so happy together…

At Arango hacienda, Rosendo is irate at Alfonsina… he is sure she used her ‘blood pressure’ as excuse to pull off that prank… Alfonsina keeps shouting that Estefania is driving him crazy and he feels nothing for Alfonsina anymore.. Rosendo is feeling pity that Alfonsina thinks so little of herself… HE is so fed up with her that he grabs his PJs and goes to sleep at the guest room.. out in hallway he runs into Damian who got concerned with all the ruckus… Rosendo says she is fine, she does not feel well today, that’s all… tomorrow we will go riding together ok?

Damian comes by the door of his parents and sees her mother cry, but does not go in …

At the Castanedo house bedroom, Este and Augusto are talking about what happened with Alfonsina and that Rosendo did not believe her… Augusto is distant, thoughtful… then he asks Este if she ever regretted marrying him… absolutely not… she always liked the mature men… she says she only liked him… Augusto insists wouldn’t you have liked better to marry a man like Rosendo Arango, a rich man, owner of the biggest processing plant in the region, an enviable wealth and social place… I am just a farmer… doing well but will never reach Rosendo.  Este assures Augusto she married him because she loves him very much, now more than ever… She asks why all the questioning… Augusto says don’t worry.. she won’t let it go.. she knows him… he claims when he came out to the garden, he was talking with Alfonsina and… (in comes Elisa to interrupt the chat)… The couple kisses Elisa good nite…  Augusto says he has to go to the study to look at some papers… (apparently he changed his mind about telling her about Alfonsina’s accusations)…

Augusto sits at his desk … is very impacted by the events of the evening… then hears noises.. he comes out and sees a man ride away on a horse, recognizes Rosendo.. Then he runs into Carmina coming in… he confronts her… Carmina says she heard noises and came out to investigate… she realizes Augusto is worried about something… he has been acting strange since the guests left… she wants him to confide in her… HE tells her Alfonsina told him Rosendo and Este were lovers… Carmina puts shocked face… she asks him not to mention anything to her sister, it is too silly, says Alfo is a sick woman… can’t believe her… did you believe her? … no, but the comment bothered me very much…  I have no reason to doubt your sister… no of course not, but I do know you are a very jealous man, and if the idea did cross your mind that she was betraying you you would go insane. What would you do? … I would kill her, her and the man who she was unfaithful to me with…

At town next day, Damian and Elisa are playing, Gael comes by with the nest and the birds in a box… he climbed the tree and got it for her… she just wanted to see them for a little while… what are we going to do now? … the mother won’t find them.. Damian blames Gael that the birds will die now… Elisa suggests going to Dona Ramona so she will care for them… ‘the witch?? ‘…

At church, Alfonsina and Padre Lupe are talking about her accusations to Este…  Padre asks her why is she thinking that.. Alfo says we women know when our husbands are unfaithful… Padre tells her it is a good part your own fault… I think all this is just a story you made up to justify your own faults…  Alfonsina claims she has just tried to be a good wife… Padre says a good wife does not accuse, harrass and monitor her husband constantly… Alfo claims her own brother should be on her side… Padre says his role is not being on any side, precisely because I am your brother I will tell you… Rosendo is no saint, but if he is looking elsewhere, it is looking for something he does not  find in his own house.

Rosendo arrives somewhere…  apparently some house… . a woman is waiting for him.. it is Carmina! … apparently he has this place for his periodic meetings with her…
They get into hanky panky… end of ep…

previews: Carmina continues to feed the case for Este and Rosendo lovers to Augusto... Augusto confronts Este...

Thank you Cap'n Sylvia for this great detailed recap. I like this TN so far. There is great chemistry here. I like Gael (he was in LFDD) and the Padre.
Damien is a little snot like his Mama and Elise is sweet like her Mama.

Am not liking Carmina. She is going to cause alot of trouble. Poor Este looks like she is going to be blamed for something she didn't do. I like Alejandro Camacho, he was great in PVAA. He seems really good here.

Can't stand Alfosina. What a b*tch.
Her poor husband, no wonder he is getting some on the side. She should listen to her brother the Padre.

I'm so sorry I meant Marta Ivett thank you for the great recap.

Marta, thank goodness you did the premiere because I could hardly understand any of the dialogue! I hope the characters start enunciating otherwise I will be lost.

Madelaine, I'm honored you thought I might have done the recap. No way sister, it was our own Marta.

Why is Carmina so tan and her sister (and everyone else) so pale? In fact, even Carmina's hands are not nearly as tan as her face. Sorry, but that actress kind of freaks me out. She's like the female version of Roberto Palazuelos. But creepier.

Bwahahaha! Rene Casados as the padre! Um yes, cast as predicted (or requested). Too funny.

First Impression: Not so bad for a first episode. Sadly, I kind of miss what's going on over at El Talisman. I'm going to get a good night's sleep and then slide on over to the Fresno avocado orchards.

Marta:

This is one of your finest recaps! Thanks for giving us such a thorogh intro to Abismo.

More in the AM.

Thanks again,
EJ

Marta! Thank you so much. My comprehension last night was in and out so I really appreciated your details. These early episodes are so important! I like how you pointed out that Esteffie was wearing the same dress. I guess they were trying to make us suspicious, too.

I can tell I am going to like this one. The cast is great. I've never seen Luwika in anything and I really liked her. I hate that Alfonsina is so hell-bent on destroying Estefania.

Ok, who thought of Pigorio when the box of Salsa Verde rolled off the assembly line?

Did anyone notice that the theme songs were all being played about 10 minutes in? I think after the first commercial break. What's up with that. I guess not a big thing, but I am a creature of habit and I want the theme song first, then the show.

Such great detail Marta!! Thanks. I'm with Sara, so important to get all the details at the beginning and I was not grabbing everything last night (this is a fast-talking town).
Man, Alfosina needs a chill pill. Yikes! And Sabine, have to say, another jealous hussy role, but she does know how to pull those off ( just wish she'd put the tanner away for awhile).

If I was ten I'd be in luurrrvvv with Gael. What a doll! And that scene with him and Padre, awww my Rene, so precious.

Yeah, I'm thinking this won't be too bad even if it's at 9:00. Characters are pretty defined and I"m betting not too much in the way of unpredictable plots, but they had me at the opening ( I could stand some gratuitous shirtless scenes a few times a week...wink wink).

"...just wish she'd put the tanner away for awhile"
----
So true! She and IckyMicky look like they were separated at birth!

I've never seen Sabine in anything except EPDA...which I watched on DVD. She sure looks different.

Marta, thank you - this was amazing. I am usually totally lost when a new story begins but after reading your thorough, well written recap, I feel I might be able to keep up!

ITA with everyone that this is a stellar cast (with more good actors yet to appear).

Ah Cesar! As charming and insidious as always. Can't wait to see what happens.

LOVE LOVE Gael...
'chirriones!'... poor thing he is doing whatever he can to impress Elisa, and everything turns out upside town for him...

LOVE LOVE Cesar Evora in this character, even if i have seen him twice already doing same char, esp in Canaveral de Pasiones. such a contrast, he was so nhappy and nice interacting with Augusto and with Damian and with Este... vs with Alfonsina...
Wasn't Alejandro Camacho paired up with Blanca Guerra in Alma de Hierro? he is a really good actor.

who needs a wife like Alfonsina?... but i have to admit Blanca Guerra is doing her best to make the character believable..

LOVE the way the kids are acting. LOVED Damian's face of sadness when he saw his mom crying in her room after the argument she had with Rosendo... it shows that he is not happy because his parents are not happy together... compared to Elisa who can't be happier with her parents and with Gael who feels he missed out on having parents period, even though he had the best 'father' ever ...

it was a weird moment when Augusto fiund Carmina coming in the house... when he told her what Alfonsina said about Rosendo and Este, seems Carmina was holding back laughter while Augusto was holding back tears... great acting from AC...

So the Rosendo and Carmina animosity was staged, definitely to send everyone's suspicions away... not sure Rosendo is happy that the suspicions are falling on Estefania like a bad hail storm though.
man, Carmina is EVIL!! EVIL!!

Marta Ivett- Wonderful first episode recap! Lots of great detail and background info. Thank you amiga.

I also enjoyed the episode itself. I liked the tension and chemistry between the adults, and I liked the kids. Little Gael is our favorite kid from La Fuerza del Destino. We've seen little Damian in a ton of tns starting back with Tontas, and little redhead Elise is currently in Telemundo's Corazon Valiente which is on at the exact same time (I recorded it last night) and is even cuter when they unleash her huge mass of curly red hair. :) She also got dressed up for a party with the adults in last night's CV episode. I'm sure her parents have mutiple tvs and recorders going in their house to capture their daughters two debut shows.

Above all, I love Rene C as a priest. Just perfect. I'm glad to see Sabine M. looking well (and her usual tan self) after her illness during Mi Pecado. I've caught glimpses of her in a daytime tn, Ni Contigo Ni Sin Ti, where she plays a respectable middle-aged business woman. But in this one, she's back to her usual slutty, envious, homewrecker role. She's good at it.

I too have an issue with Sabine's 'tan'... she does remind me of the one we used to call the 'orange man', Roberto Palezuelos.

btw, since it is showing at 1/2 hr eps in mexico, they didn't bother to cut off the credits for 2nd episode.. lol i do like the intro.. even if it is full of spoilers for 1st week or so.

Marta- I don't know if you saw PVAA, but Alejandro Camacho (Agusto) was phenomenal. Boy, was he hateful. But he can really show vulnerability too. When those tears sprang to his eyes, I really felt for him. But it's turning into a sick jealousy, and I see things getting really ugly for Estefania.

You would have thought Agusto would be suspicious that Carmina was the one meeting with Rosendo after catching her coming back into the house, despite their little play act that they hate each other.

sorry missed the beg of padre/alfo discussion at the end of the ep...
Padre: you had no reason to accuse Este mercilessly... what you did was ill intentioned gossip... which can hurt others very much, especially when you know the evilthinkers in this town...
Alfo: it is this town who has to get to know this 'woman'... it is about time they get to know who she really is... time for them to stop adoring her calling her 'the pride of la Ermita'...

marta i - Thanks for the recap. I gave this one a try because of the time slot (8p.m.CDT), in spite of the fact that I detest David Cepeda. I liked it enough that I will watch again tonight.

Carmina - LOL Capn Sylvia. I've seen her in several 'novelas and was thinking last night that she is a female version of our George Hamilton. ;o)

_Padre Tarde a/k/a Padre Tad a/k/a Padre 'lupe..... I wonder if he'll be as bad as our Paddy Taddy from FELS.

Alfonsina .... no wonder Cesar E. is looking elsewhere for comfort.

word verification---tanstr
Must have picked up on my comments about Sabine Moussier! LOL

Great recap thank you. My friend who lives in Houston,Tx was watching it and she texted me that they had english sub titles during the show, just wondered if anyone else had this?

My English subtitles were MIA most of the evening. My Spanish subtitles have always been complete illegible garbage.

What a fabulous job, Marta! Thank you for getting us off to such a great start.

You told the story so masterfully and filled in many details that sailed right by me. You are tops!

I always have trouble getting names and relationships straight in the first few days so I'm sure I'll be referring back to your recap to get myself grounded.

Sara, the green salsa caught my eye too -- and of course I waxed nostalgic about the Pig. Sniff.

The kids are impressive, endearing, and each with a distinct personality. Let's hope their adult selves live up to their youthful promise.

I could really see the young Paloma growing up to be Livia Brito. The others will require a greater leap of imagination, I think.

Thanks Marta, this is spectacular. What a fantastic way to kick this off.

I enjoyed seeing some old friends, precious kids, and gorgeous plump habañeros. I especially like Carmina (I especially enjoyed her in La Madrastra) and Estefania (I think I first saw her in Amigas y Rivales and was bewitched).

Of course whom I'm really watching for is Altair Jarabo. I suspect there be a few episodes before she appears.

Carlos

Marta, you were the perfect one to recap the first episode. Details are needed, because all the information and relationships are new to us. I didn't see this, but felt like I had from your careful recounting.. Sorry to see that happy marriages are going to be destroyed by ugly, inaccurate rumors...but...this is a telenovela, so misery and misunderstanding are de rigeur I guess.

I'm not going to be able to find the time to follow this one (except for the occasional Altair excerpt) but I have started doing caption data dumps similar to those I have done on on LQNPA. Some people find them useful, so this link should always take you to the latest one.

Thanks Marta for a lovely kickoff.

Carmina/Sabine is one actress who can send my husband screaming from the room, and I don't think I've ever seen her looking quite so scary as here with that massive streaked gray Medusa hair framing her overcooked face. Yes! I so noticed that her hands were so much paler - huh?!?!

Have to admit Rene looks good in his priestly duds!

I'm not sure I'll follow it although I do like the acting lineup - well, except for the 3 leads!!! LOL! The kids are great, and I like most of the supporting cast.

Yeah, typical TN setup - nasty wife spews hatred all over small town, ruining several people's lives. What else is new in telenovela land?

How embarrassing for Univision that they had to banish their own prime-time production to daytime - and so quickly! I hope this teaches them to get a decent story/writing and editing crew next time. Was it Venevision who let them down? Sort of like what happened with Los Herederos del Monte which was produced for Telemundo by a South American company - a total mishmash/circo of a plot that never went anywhere (it kept reversing on itself). In both cases it looked liked the writing and editing had been hired out to someone's 9th grade drama class.

Audrey

"plump habeñeros"
----
Thy names are Mark and David. ¡Qué picante!

I think I am completely on board with this one. I am forever grateful to Marta for the detailed recap of this information heavy capitulo.

Marta - Thank you so much for the detailed recap. I started watching last night but was lost. It's hard to read cc's and watch so I couldn't tell one lady from the other with the exception of Ms. Fake Bake. With your recap I can hit it again and know who's who. Thank you.

Daisy - I was just asking about you yesterday and hoped that you knew about the new show. So glad to hear from you again!

Ms. Fake Bake. LOL!! Love it!

Martaivette: Thank you for your recap. It was great and you captured the lighter feeling of this episode very well.

I had watched 3 episodes of this show before (5, 11 and 12, I think) but decided to watch the first episode on saturday to comment on it.

I agree that little Gael is adorable and I loved his relationship with Padre Lupe. This relationship was also one of my favorite things from Cañaveral and I was glad to see it here. In fact, all the kids were treated fairly and I'm glad for that. Little Paloma was so cute too in that little glimpse we saw.

I got to meet Ludwika Paleta during a visit to the Televisa sets with some college classmates back when Duelo de Pasiones was on, she is incredibly gorgeous in person. My best friend got to meet her and her sister Dominika (Lily in MEPS and Jimena in TDA) after seeing them in The Vagina Monologues and he was utterly besotted with them. So, I can totally see her as the town's beauty.

I'm glad to see Sabine Moussier feeling better, unfortunately that means she went back to the tanning salon. I think she had better coloring in Mi Pecado even though she was very sick back then, but that was obviously because she couldn't tan during that time. Laisha Wilkins and Jessica Coch made casting for this role but I heard they were considered too young, which is funny, since they both have a wider age gap with Angelique Boyer than what Azela Robinson had with Daniela Castro back in the day. But, of course, there's was also Zepeda to consider this time. Back then Juan Soler was much younger.

I agree with always liking César Évora in the same role. I enjoy the familiarity, lol.

Jarocha

I forgot this started last night, so thank you, Marta, for this great recap.
I like the adult actors so far, but am not so sure that I'll feel the same when the "kids" grow up and take center stage. Not a big fan of A. Boyer or David Zepeda.
Reading the recap, I just KNEW that Carmina was Rosendo's amante. That is perfect!!

Took a long birthday weekend and just got back to work. My friend just told me about this new TN. Haven't read the recap or comments yet. Think I'm going to give it a go. Only missed one ep!

Robey

Marta, thanks so much for doing a thoroughly detailed recap (and adding a bit of commentary). It's so helpful. I always have trouble figuring everyone out at the beginning.

Normally I hate it when anyone tells a woman it's her own fault her husband strays; he wouldn't if she were a better wife and gave him what he wanted at home, etc., but here I can sort of agree. I don't TOTALLY agree; it's still his fault, but Alfonsina is so goshdarn nasty who'd want to stick with her?

I love the kids. It will be a little sad when we timejump. The Gael actor was excellent as poor doomed César in Mi Pecado as well. The heartwrenching scene where he was found drowned and his father carried him back to the house is stuck in my brain. I know all he had to do in that scene was go limp and not move but he did it SO WELL. Few actors, especially kids, can look so convincingly and tragically dead.

When I saw that salsa verde coming off the line I immediately thought, "NO! I said I wanted RED salsa!" Ha.

Marta:

Your enthusiasm for the story is contagious. Both your recap and comments were wonderful.

I loved the child actors. The young Elisa with the freckles on her nose is a doll but it will take a beanie to transform her into Angelique.

Carmina and Alfonsina...well this looks to be a shrew fest, alright. Jarocha, how nice that you got to meet Lukwika Paleta. She is so beautiful! Is she of Mexican and Polish heritage? Those Polish women can have the most gorgeous bone structure—I remember the model Paulina from 20 years ago.

Like you, Cap'n, I heard a lot of mush-mouth pronunciation last night and my Spanish captions weren't good at all. Looks like I'll be hitting rewind and the dictionary a lot to recap.

Sara, I saw the salsa verde coming off the line and my mind went immediately to avocados. Avocado on corn tortillas, salt, a little habanero sauce, ah...life is good.

Vivi, I love Rene C as the good father 'Lupe. Was it just my imagination or was he wearing less guyliner than usual last night? We are going to need his character to keep his nasty sister Alfonsina in line.

Gees, ate my comment. Just wanted to say, yep, Rosemary I am alive (somewhat) and kicking ( when my back lets me) and working like crazy. Have missed my daily sanity check-in with everyone! So happy to have so many familiar, and welcome, faces in this one. Sad some actors don't stick around long, but I guess there are some more good ones coming around the corner too.

Did want to ask, if anyone knows, and I'm a bit lazy to look this up right now, but does anyone know if the creative team on this TN is the same as Mi Pecado? I'm seeing a lot of similarities already with cast/characters, plot and location.

Daisynjay- When Mi Pecado was aired, Jarocha pointed out the similarities bewteen it and Canaveral de Pasiones (the original version of Abismo). The same writers who wrote Canaveral wrote Mi Pecado. It's not the same story, but has some of the same elements.

Elna June: Ludwika is Polish but she moved to Mexico when she was 2 years old and at age 8 she became a child star here in the telenovela "Carrusel", which is actually the most popular kids novela of all time.

Here's an adorable scene
of her in the also very popular El Abuelo y Yo, with the now film actor Gael García Bernal. She was such a pretty kid too. It was the first kiss ever for them both, captured forever in video. The things an actor ends up sharing with the world!

Daisinjay: The original story of Abismo, Cañaveral de Pasiones, was written by the same team that wrote Mi Pecado. The begining of Mi Pecado and some scenes were an homage to Cañaveral, that's why you find them so simmilar.

Jarocha

Vivi: You beat me to answer :).

Great recap, Marta. I have nothing new to add to the comments at the moment except that this looks like it will be excellent.

The opening credits being late is something I can't explain unless Univision traditionally does this for all programs on the night of a premiere. I never bothered to notice before. Telemundo is notorious for putting the credits much later, but I don't see that there is any reason for it.

Little Paloma does look a lot like Livia Brito; that's a great casting job.

hmm did the credits in Mi pecado also say the original story was by Caridad Bravo Adams? this one is, as did Canaveral... most stories that are her original have a GREAT basis plotline and plenty of interesting branches off it...

The credits for UFCS were shown about 15 or 20 minutes in last night, as well. Is this the new thing they're doing? I noticed when I watched TV in Mexico that the credits would usually run in the middle of the show. I don't like it. I want to hear the credits as my cue that the show is starting!

Thank Jarocha and Vivi!! I never saw the original of this current version, so I appreciate the insight.I enjoyed MP, and as long as the costumers here don't have Boyer wearing any blasted corsets to drive me bananas, I'll be good.

Jarocha- I file away everything you share with us in my brain. You're our Mexican Telenovela Ambassador! Glad I remembered it correctly. :)

Martaivette the story of Cañaveral was based on two Caridad Bravo Adams' short stories: Una Sombra Entre los Dos and Al Pié del Altar. The story of Mi Pecado was different, what happens to Elisa is not the same as what happened to Lucrecia and after the kids grow up the simmilarities end and the stories go to very different directions, except for one scene in the first episodes.

There is a third rich family in Mi Pecado and Lucrecia ends up married to the kid from that story, who is the bad guy when he grows up and kills his father who we thought was going to be the big bad until then. Also, Lucrecia's mother treats her very poorly she is the result of incest as her father abused her when she was younger. That was all very intense.

Jarocha

Vivi: You did! But you always remember everything so well, I always marvel at the power of your memory.

Jarocha

GatoViejo- I just noticed your comment and I am thrilled you are doing this for Abismo as well!!!

Julia:

TvAzteca shows their novelas at the half hour mark: 7:30, 8:30, 9:30. To attract people to watch their shows instead, Televisa decided to put their credits at the same time as those novelas start.

Jarocha

At the half hour? That's never worked in the US on any network.

GatoViejo, that's an amazing caption-grabber! How do you do that?

Cap'n Sylvia: Thanks for the recap - great details. I'm in on this one.

Has anyone ever seen a Catholic priest wearing a rosary around his neck like a necklace as Padre Lupe did last night? This does not seem right.

I thought it was interesting, and a bit creepy, that Estefania and Agusto spoke about how she was a minor (de minor edad) when they met and began their romance. But, she seemed to know what/who she wanted, so I guess it worked out. Alejandro C.'s wife in PVAA (another doll-like blonde) was also a minor when he married her, and he used that to control her. Estefania seems to be very sure of herself and her marriage, despite having married so young to an older man. Too bad he isn't so sure of himself and his marriage.

Thanks for the recap, Cap'n Sylvia!
I've been watching this online and am liking it so far. So I'm glad to 'start over' with Univision too. I just love the girl who plays young Elisa in that role - she is adorable :)

Actually I think it's good child casting with lil Damian, lil Gael and lil Paloma.

I can see lil Paloma growing up to be Livia Brito.

I can see lil fair Gael growing up to be Mark Tacher.

I can see dark, pale lil Damian growing up to be David Zepeda.

They're gonna have to do some 'splaining with lil' Elisa, though. Baby Elisa has very dark eyes, while Angelique Boyer has blue eyes. Maybe she gets blue Fresh Looks contacts when she grows up. I guess the pulled back hair = Angelique Boyer with pulled back hair.

Hair and eye color can change as you grow up. Many people's hair gets darker. My eyes were very dark brown when I was a kid, and they are now lighter brown with a lot of green. My brother's and sister's eyes are the same. Another sister has always had green eyes, but now they are turning more blue.

I was kind of falling asleep during part of the show...was the woman in the office Carmina, or was it another woman, or do we not know? They seemed to be trying to imply/mislead it was Estefania but is that definitely/probably not the case? She does seem very sweet and devoted to her family.

Little Julia in Cañaveral also looked nothing like Daniela Castro but she was casted for her chops. The kid has to play very intense emotions and that girl pulled them off. She is still an actress now, Zoraida Gómez, and was on ENDA, CME and LLena (as the younger version of Azela Robinson! ).

I'm hoping little Elisa here will carry those scenes as they are meant to and steals our hearts too.

Jarocha

i think they did the credits at the very beginning and also at 1/2 into the show last night... they just did not cut off the init credits for the 2nd 1/2 hr show they showed last ngiht, in mex it is showing in 1/2 hr eps..
how long ahead is mexico transmissions from ours? will they run into trouble if they extend it in mex?

Gato Viejo:

Thank you, thank you, thank you. I truly appreciate your tech savvy and generosity—they are a boon to all recappers.

I do hope you come by a lend a comment once in a while, just so we can continue to praise your genius.

Thanks, again, for doing this.

Elna June

Martaivette:
"in mex it is showing in 1/2 hr eps.."

In México they are showing 1 hour eps. I just checked and today they will show episode 37.

"was the woman in the office Carmina, or was it another woman, or do we not know?"

Julia- They never showed the face of the woman in the office. It was just to throw us off, because obviously Estefania is loyal to her husband and her sister is the one boinking Rosendo. It also seems like Carmina likes her sister's clothes, so it wouldn't be a surprise if she "borrowed" something to wear.

Martai: Thanks for doing the premiere for us. The attention to detail is one thing I love about your recapping for us! Like some of the others mentioned, the speech was really fast and slurred and difficult to follow. You helped me tremendously!

Thanks, Marta! A great recap to get things started. I missed so many details watching the episode, now it makes more sense.

I've been watching the replay of MEPS at midnight so I agree with above posters about her resembling Roberto Palazuelos. Something about tanning darker than your lips freaks me out. Also interesting watching the Paleta sisters. Thanks for the info!

Ai ai ai. I haven't watched yet -- I'm still trying to detox from El Tal -- but I'm disappointed to hear we have another bunch of mushmouths.

I did a marathon of Corazon Salvaje on DVD to finish up over the weekend so I wouldn't have Angelique or Rene interference. They spoke beautifully in that TN, so if they are failing to articulate in this one, it's definitely the direction.

Oh for pete's sake, I totally forgot that stupid blogger doesn't do email notifications any more so I haven't been checking for updated comments, DOH!!!

Just wanted to say again, THANK YOU to Marta for starting us off. Lord have mercy I would have been lost without her recap.

I love that this episode featured habaneros and that people were actually talking about their product and working with it, unlike some ranchos where people seem to do nothing but fight. (You avocado and raisin farmers know who I mean!) I also like the familiar faces and Rene Casados in his Padre role.

Jarocha, thanks for the insights and info about the Paleta sisters. I agree with Marta, Ludwika looks more beautiful than ever.

Thanks for the very helpful recap, Marta Ivett. Este going to all the trouble to make her special habanera sauce for Alfonsina's benefit? Maybe just to show what a fabulous hostess she is, but somehow, Alfonsina doesn't seem like someone who would enjoy a habanera sauce. Or maybe like someone who doesn't enjoy anything anyone does for her.
La Paloma

La Paloma, I thought it was pretty funny that Este was planning to make her special habanero sauce for Alfonsina. I enjoyed imagining she was thinking something along the lines of "I'm going to make this sauce so friggin' hot that it's going to blow that witch's face right off of her skull."

Thank you thank you thank you for the recap. I thought it was just me when I thought I was missing some of the dialogue. You filled in the missing gaps for me. I'm really hoping I will like this telenovlea. I did not see Canaveral de Pasiones, so this is all new to me.

I seem to not be alone in not being a big fan of A. Boyer or D. Zepeda...I didn't watch Teresa, and was bored with her character's storyline in Corazon SalvajeI liked Zepeda's character in Soy Tu Duena but found his acting in La Fuerza del Destino to have no fuerza. Or chemistry with his co-protagonist...I forgot her name already. Maybe Zepeda's just not cut out to be "the good guy"? Maybe his chemistry will be better with Angelique.

I'm glad to see Ludwika back. She looks as good as she always has. Sabine really needs to lay off the self-tanner and hair dye. Although maybe they can cast her and Roberto Palazuelos as siblings in another telenovela...they'd have the same orange-y glo. And I've missed Cesar Evora. I didn't like his character in Llena de Amor but I'll watch just about any telenovela he's in.

I always find Sabine repellent and creepy; if she discontinued the use of self-tanner I don't think it would make a whit of difference. I'm totally in favor of her being cast as Carmina, though, she's a great villainess and I've always perversely enjoyed the thrills of revulsion she gives me.

for those who don't know mexico geography, the yucatan peninsula is the south east portion of Mexico, directly below the gulf of mexico, famous for its beaches (e.g. Cancun) so here they COULD say they are going to the beach and be a few hours ride to there... lol

Do you all remember Sabine's orig character as Mireya in Maria Isabel (she was there only toward the last 1/3 of the novela as the antagonist old girlfriend who jumps back in his life)? ... i have had issue with her tan since then, and that was about 14 yrs ago!!

EJ or BlueL... great 2nd ep recap. could not comment on it there, not tagged yet.
Augusto the cranky and insecure and Alfonsina tiring us already only in 2nd ep for sure! talk about planting weed and dancing to the tune the villainess wants you to...
final scene was a hoot!

one more note about yesterday that they teased us with but i think will be figured out tonight:
Padre is receiving money from someone for Gael's expenses... does that mean one of Gael's parents knows about him?
drum roll... this mystery might be settled tonight.
