La Que No Podía Amar #48 Friday 3/2/12 A Matter of Desire vs. Desirability and the Bad News Blues

Capítulo 48

Lo Del Pasado: Efrain has been sent to bring back the old rancher who bought the golden red chestnut, Rio, from Ana Paula.  At the same time, Rogelio’s sister, Cinthia, has not lost the opportunity to spite Bro-Hell by throwing AP’s fleeing from the hacienda in his face, and by telling him that in town now they call him The Abandoned One, je-je!  Bro-Hell replies with a murderous stare and a Thwap! from the side of his wheelchair that Effer manages to block.

Lo Del Nuevo:

Back at the Locatel Hotel, otherwise thought of affectionately as the Tell-All Motel, Federico promises to stand by Pau as best he can.  He’ll give her the chance to try explaining things to Gustavo and if Guscakes doesn’t come to his senses then he, Tía Rosaura and she will leave ASAP for Tuxtla where he’ll break the news to his family about her being his beloved love-child. Pau, though, would rather stay and avoid any further complications with the others. Fine, then they’ll stay also, Papi says.

At Hacienda del Fuerte, Miss Mercy Mercedes and Babycakes brother are bringing down their bags to leave.  They’re bickering over why in the world Mersnottys didn’t clarify for Ana that it was their father who died and not him!  (Puh-leese.  Couldn’t Gus figure that one on his own by now?  Maybe he just needs to hear it from the horse’s mouth.)  “--Because she wasn’t right for you! --And, if she loves you so much why isn’t she with you now?”  (Duh?  Shall we define “incognito” for Miss Mercy?)  Sinthia shows up to see her friend/s off.  (Guess the two siblings can continue sniping at each other at the hotel.  I’d be giving Big Sis the cold shoulder, myself.  Jes’ sayin’.)  Gus explains to Sin that in deference to her hurt feelings and the awkwardness of the situation, he won’t be accepting Bro-Hell’s job offer at the hacienda.  Sin lies and says it doesn’t matter to her either way.  [Me da lo mismo.] They’re both pretty decent to each other about their break up and the good-byes. Gus heads off to the car.  Mersnottys thanks Sin for continuing their friendship, and Sin begs her not to let Gus know how much she’s hurting inside.

Meanwhile, Gus is down just below the upper balcony in the outer yard adjusting a suitcase. He supposedly doesn’t hear or notice Michael and Hugo arguing up top about letting his sister go free since he’s there now (I think) in her place.  Hugo tells Mikey to get back to work.  Once they find his sister, Hugo adds, she’s being brought back there and nobody will be able to help her then—not her, not either of them!  Gus does see Hugo arguing with somebody and walks out into the front.  His back is to Mikey.  Mikey walks to the back yard to do the woodworking repairs for the hacienda and doesn’t notice Gus standing there, either.

Maripaz and her papi have stopped by at the hacienda to talk something over with Rog.  While Consuelo announces them, they have a chance to notice Mikey doing some carpentry work.  Ulises asks Mike what the beef is between him and his BIL.  Mikey says it has to do with his sister.  “—Oh?  More likely your drinking I’d think.”  No, says Mikey.  Rog doesn’t let him drink there.  Uli says good, and BTW, I don’t want you hangin’ out with my little girl again.  Mike agrees he’s not right for Maripaz and tells her this to her face.

Uli and Maripaz leave then to go in to speak with Rog.  The discussion’s about keeping Mikey away from Maripaz.  Uli says she’s at a dangerous age and he’d like to avoid her mixing with just anybody, especially with an undesirable anybody like Mikey.  Rog doesn’t have any problems with that and tells Maripaz that if that’s what her father wants, then she’ll have to comply.

Later that night, Bruno shows up with Daniela.  He pumps her for any information about Paula’s whereabouts that she might have.  Dani swears on her mother’s grave that she hasn’t a clue.  She’s happy to give him the phone numbers of people they knew at nursing school, etc., but first she’d like to know what’s going on with Michael.  Fine, says Rog.  He’s locked up here.  Dani wonders if she’s heard right.   “--Locked up?”

At Locatel Hotel, AP runs into Guscakes just as he’s coming back down to the lobby for something.  She tells him they have to talk, but he has nothing to say to her.  She won’t take no for an answer and tells him that now that she knows he’s not dating Carmen she wants another opportunity to explain things.  He’s puzzled.  (Note: he’s knitting his brows together.)  “--Carmen?”  Sure, AP thought the two of them were dating and it nearly killed her!  But, she thought she’d let them alone, if that’s what Gus wanted.  Seeing the two of them hugging each other was almost too much!  Gus gets on his high horse again.  “—What do you think I felt like imagining you in that other man’s bed every night?”  Pau insists that’s exactly what she’s been trying to tell him all this time: that her marriage is a sham and there’s nothing been going on between her husband and her--never has been and never will be--because the only man in her life is and always has been Gus!  He accuses her of lying, but she insists it was just a contract for only a year and that she is going to get a divorce ASAP.  It was a mistake and she did it because she truly thought he was dead! With this, Cupcake finally manages to crack Guscake’s candy-shell of obstinacy.  (Note: Gus moves in for The Kiss.)  AP and he close in and it’s Houston, we have mouth-meld!

Back at Hacienda del Fue’te, Dani complains that Rog has only taken Mikey out of one jail to put him into another.  No, Rog says, he’s only tried to help keep him away from drink.  How could she not have known that he drinks?  “--I tried keeping liquor away from him, but he didn’t understand because he is sick.”  Bruno inserts himself here like the trouble making busybody he truly is and insists the kid isn’t sick.  Rog turns around and yells back that he is because he’s started stealing bottles of booze from the hacienda!!  Bruno shuts his yammering pie-hole but quick (no doubt after making a quick note of that whip.)  Rog turns back to Dani and explains he’d prefer controlling him this way.  She tearfully thanks him for making the effort.  Faced with her sincerity, Oh- Oh-Jello tells her to let Maria know to show her to Michael’s room.  He then turns around to face Bruno and demands to know how he managed to let Rosaura slip through his fingers again!

In the hotel lobby, Pau swears she’ll show Gus how much she loves him.  She only married the other guy because he was going to get her brother out of jail.  “—So you and he never…er…nada??”  “--That’s right.  Nothing happened between us because he—“.  Gus stops Pau before she can explain anything further about the why-not.  He apologizes and says he has no right to pry.  (Sure you do!)  “--Forget it.  You thought I was dead and my sister never bothered to clarify that it was my dad who died and not me.  Forgive me.”  She tells him again that she’s never been able to forget him or stopped loving him.  He asks about what else is included in this contract of theirs (not that she could tell him cuz she’s never bothered to read the darned thing!)  “--What kind of guy would contract somebody to marry him?” “—A controlling man who’s used to manipulating others to get what he wants, so much so that he even ordered--.”  Pau stops in mid-sentence and Gus asks her if her husband had ever harmed her.  She says not at all; he simply married her to get back at another woman who left him a little bit before she was supposed to marry him.  “--In exchange for the marriage his attorney got my brother out of jail.”

At the same time, Mentirosie is telling her sob story to Feddy who says if he’d only known he’d have helped them out.  Not to worry now, though, cuz AP won’t ever have to worry about things again.  Since Rosie “has a bad heart” and “isn’t allowed to work” now, he’ll take care of Rosie, too.  (Ka-ching! Ka-ching! Ka-ching!  Jackpot!)  What Fed wants now is simply to see his two daughters happily married and cared for, he admits to her.  “--So, tell me if Gustavo really deserves my daughter.”  A frown appears on Rosie’s face.

Gus, meanwhile, tries getting details from Pau about her marriage:  what was he like?  Did he treat you well?  Didn’t he want to win you over emotionally?  Pau says she won’t lie, that he was very kind and did try to win her over with all sorts of romantic gestures.  “—Ah, so he does love you!”  “—Yes, but I hate him!!  He’s a hypocrite and a liar, capable of doing a lot of harm!”  She stops to look at Gus frowning back at her.  “--What’s the matter?”  Well, admits Gus, she sounds like she’s more hurt and disappointed than full of hate.  She explains then that she did think for a while that he simply had a forceful personality, but realized later that he was really an evil person and has distanced herself from him.  She’s left him for good!  He accepts that.  “--Okay, then, so what happens during this contracted year while you’re getting the divorce papers worked out?”  (That’s the $64,000 question, Guster! Viewerville’s inquiring minds all want to know the answer to that one!)  Hmm.  Darling Dimples draws a blank.

Back at the hacienda, Ro-Hell is screaming at Bruno for not bringing back Rosie.  She’s the only one capable of telling them directly where her niece is!!  If he couldn’t find her, then the least he could have done was to get hold of the rancher who bought the horse!!  Bruno’s just useless!!  Does he have to think for him, too?  Bruno (with his fingers crossed behind his back, no doubt) officiously promises to do all that is possible to bring Paula back and then leaves.  Maria comes in as Bruno exits.  She tells him to understand that Paula took a powder because she wants nothing more to do with him.  Oh-Hell insists she only left because she thinks he’s some sort of murderer; but he’s going to prove to her that he isn’t!  Then she’ll love him again.  Maria warns him against thinking like that. “—You can’t force that sort of thing.” Oh-Hel reasons aloud. “—Everything was fine, Nana, until this misunderstanding came up.  She does care!  She will love me once again the same way I love her.”  Maria just stares at him.

Ana Paula tells Gus that she’s not waiting the full year.  She isn’t going back there!  Gus tells her that it’s just all such an unbelievable a story.  But he’s got to believe her, she says--he will once he sees her divorce is final!   Now Federico walks up with Rosie.  Pau introduces Fed to him.  “—This is …er…Gustavo.”  “—So you are Ana’s former boyfriend.”  AP tells him that Fed’s her father--the man she thought was her father died, but he’s her real daddy, adds Feddy.  Well yeah, says Gus, he’s her old boyfriend, but complains that a lot of good it does him now that she’s married to somebody else.  Feddy reminds him Pau doesn’t love her husband and is ready to divorce him; so he’d better make up his mind fast if he wants to pursue this relationship or not.

Maria tells Oh-Hell that she’d actually started to think that he and Paula were happy together, and that Paula had finally come to love him.  “—Why?  Did she say something to you?”  No, says Maria, but she seemed happy and hopeful.  See, Rog insists, I matter to her.  “--I hope to show her I’m not a murderer, and to clear my name--to show her that she and everything about her matters to me.  I’ll show her that I really do love her.”  “--Yes, but you’re going about it the wrong way.”  “—What else can I do when I’m left with no other option?”   “-- You cannot force somebody to be with you-- not if you love them.”   (Umm.  I say we’re just chasing our tails here with this line of discussion.  Next topic, please.)  What exactly does Rog think she’ll feel about him once she finds out he’s got her brother locked up here, she asks.

Rog reasons that he’s only keeping Mikey there till they bring Paula back to the hacienda.  She advises him to forget Pau now the same way he forgot Vainessa.  How can he, he asks her, if Paula is the only woman who’s ever truly interested him and gotten him to feel this way about a woman?  I want to earn her love, really!  (Sorry, but IMNSHO unless you can perform your husbandly duties, dude, you ain’t goin’ nowhere with this relationship.  You were just lucky this gal was ready to cloister herself and that you presented her the perfect opportunity to stay true to her romantic ideals--without giving up the ghost of Gusmas past!)  Maria advises Rogelio then that this better not be some nutty impulsive thing like what happened with Nessa.  Rog insists he’s in love and that he’s determined to get Mikey to stop drinking.  When Paula sees he’s gotten her brother to stop drinking she’ll be eternally grateful to him.   Maria seems to be thinking the same thing Viewerville is by now:  you have got to be delusional, dude!

Before Fed and Mentirosie can leave, AP demands an apology from her aunt to Guscakes for the lies she told when Gus and she ran into each other after he returned.  Fake crocodile tears roll down Mentirosie’s cheeks as she explains it was for AP’s mental well-being.  She’d suffered so and she didn’t want Pau to relive it all over again since by the time they met in the street back then, her niece was already married.  (That’s her story and she’s stickin’ to it.  Of course, Viewerville knows that her timeline is a bit off cuz Pau was still only engaged and had a couple of days till she’d be getting married.)  Gus agrees that Pau has explained all that to him, but he feels she was wrong not to allow them to work things out between themselves.  More crocodile tears drop to the carpet.  Please believe her that she’s very sorry and whatever she didn’t was done with the best of intentions rather than out of spite or maliciously inspired.  Aw, forget it, Gus says good-naturedly.  What’s important is they’re together now.  He loves Pau more than life itself and wants her back forever and always.  (Uggh!  He’s such a Boy Scout!  Give me a jaded macho man any time!)

Dani gets after Mikey for continuing to drink and allowing himself to be locked up for it.  “—You really believe that’s why I’m locked up here? That’s not why.  It’s because my sister hasn’t returned.  Anyway, it’s better than going back to the other place and being beaten to death.”   Dani doesn’t seem to listen.  She tells him to get his head on straight, give up the booze and then do something with his life.  “—Life?  What kind of life?  I have no life!”  No. All he cares about is knowing that his sister got out all right and is now safe somewhere.  Dani remembers that’s what she’s there to tell him.  Pau called her and says that she and Margarito are fine and that Gus is alive!  Mikey gives Dani a look of you’re-kidding-right? impactado.

Back at Fermin’s place, now, Carmen admits to Fermin that she’s angry at him for telling Ana Paula where to find Gus.  He says it wasn’t going to matter.  Anyway, she didn’t really think that with the two of them staying at the same hotel they wouldn’t run into each other, did she?  Really?  Instead of being angry she should be happy that she’s finally realized that she’s able to love a man again and get on with her life.  Carmen agrees Gus was good for that at least.

Dani and Mike are both happy for Pau.   Dani says she is so relieved to know that Rog really didn’t put the hit out on Gus after all, and that he isn’t a murderous piece of human debris, either.  (OMG!  I just got a good look at the bowling shirt somebody in wardrobe put Miguel Carmona’s character in.  I need a pair of earplugs it’s barking so loud.)  Mikey tells Dani that since both his aunt and his sister are safely out of Ro-Hell’s reach, he wants her to tell them that he’s also gotten safely away.  He’ll gladly make the sacrifice, staying locked up there for the rest of his life, just as long as he knows they’re both happy and safe.

Pau and Gus, meantime are sitting on the sand by their bonfire, smooching up a storm.  She comes up for air and says she’s certain they truly love each other.  They agree to make a new start and seal it with another passionate kiss.

Back at the Hell-Fuerte, Dani refuses to lie to Pau, though Mikey begs her to and thus put some meaning to his crappy life.  He tells her again that he still wants her to find somebody else, somebody worthwhile.  She weeps.  It’s obvious that she feels miserable.  Yeah, the dopey broad still loves him.  (I’d say this group of gals needs an infusion of macho males but quick.  All these terrific women and nobody to choose from that any self-respecting yenta wouldn’t turn up her nose at!  Sheesh!)

At the coffee shop, Federico tells Rosie that as soon as he gets back to Tuxtla he’s going straight to his attorney to formally recognize AP as his daughter and to give her his last name.

Back by the bonfire, Gus says he likes Feddy and thinks he’s a decent guy.  AP is worried how his wife and daughter will take the news that she’s his love-child.  Gus admits it won’t be easy for Nessa since he was dating a friend of hers and got to know the “harsh” side of her personality.   AP wants to know why they broke off.  He realized he couldn’t forget Pau, he explains.  They kibbitz back and forth and smooch some more.

Back in her bedroom, Effer and Sinthia discuss Gus’s kicking her to the curb.  Effer says he’d be lying if he said he wasn’t happy it happened.  On the other hand, he says, they have a thing for each other.  They should start up again and this time for keeps.  She says their situation is impossible and she knows she really doesn’t love him.  He tells her that he loves her and that he wants her.  Let the two of them continue like before and he’ll make her forget the little engineer.  She shakes her head sadly at him and says no.  He declares that any man who rejects a queen like her is nothing but a fool.  She appreciates the sentiment and kisses him for it, hoping it’ll be just like old times, but it isn’t.    They both know it, too.

More smooches between Gus and Cupcake –till he stops long enough to ask her what was in that contract.  Again she tells him she barely read it.  He wasn’t around for her and it didn’t matter much.  They agree to find out what was in the contract once they get back to Tuxtla.  (Something tells me they’re in for one Ro-Hell of a shock once they do.)  They agree to forget it now, at least for tonight.  The only thing that matters to the Cupcake is that the two of them are with each other now.  More passionate smooching ensues.

Effer leaves disgusted and frustrated by his lady love.  He says she’ll want him back later on….but he doesn’t really look convinced.  Vainessa calls Sin right after. Sin starts crying on phone and tells Vanessa that El Gusto Mío gave her the grand good-bye and a thanks for the grins speech.

A bit later that evening, the Devil comes knock knock knocking on Mikey’s balcony window  by way of black-hearted Bruno.  “—it’s rough stuff being locked away like this.  So I’ve brought the entertainment.”  He pulls a bottle of whiskey out of his coat.  Michael’s tongue makes a sudden, uncontrollable, irrepressible dive through the bars and towards the bottle.

Back at the beach, Gus has created another handmade little trinket for AP, and by the light of the blazing bonfire, he tells her he’s decided that because all things are now cleared up for them that they are destined to be together.  He says he’s decided that he wants to stay with her for the rest of his life and then hands her the ring-trinket he’s fashioned out of dead reeds or some such.  “—Once you are divorced I want you to marry me.”  Pau looks surprised.  (I know it takes a bit of beanie adjustment here to believe she couldn’t see this coming a mile away.)

Bruno buddies up to a very inebriated Mikey now and reminds him that it wasn’t Rog that got him out of jail, but Bruno with his slick legal-eagle-isms.  Mikey underscores it with a toast and a trago from the handy foam party cup Bruno must have also had hidden under his coat.  “—You can’t trust him.  Me yes, but not him.” They toast to friendship.  “Bottoms up!”

Pau now accepts with a smile.  Gus goes through wedding vows for her and she tells him she’s putting her heart and her life into his safekeeping as he puts the “ring” on her finger.  They kiss again.  She cries for happiness and then warns him that the man she’s married to is extremely powerful.  Gus replies that it doesn’t matter; that he’ll fight whoever it might be to defend his love for her.  “—We’re together and together I’m sure we’ll succeed.”  They kiss again.

Back at the bungalow, Federico asks Rosaura to tell him all about Pau’s mother during the time she was growing up.  He sympathizes with the “difficult time” Mentirosa supposedly had bringing Pau and Mikey up.  He tells her how admirable a woman she was.  He says then that he doesn’t understand how she didn’t have a chance to find some man to share her life with at some time. Certainly she had many men interested in her [pretendientes].  Sure she did, she admits, but then dares to confess that there was only one man she ever cared about and that he was that man.  To say Feddy is anything but pleasantly surprised is an understatement.  In fact, Ol’ Feddy looks over at Rosie looking back so expectantly at him.  His usually cheery self deflates instantaneously and his smile does an immediate 180.  The old guy (along with parts of Viewerville) just threw up a little in the mouth, but  he manages to hide it rather well, all things considered. (Blech.)

Luckily, Viewerville is beamed back to the bonfire where talk now turns to living without luxuries and to having children, especially little mini-cupcakes to sweeten their lives up with.  The two agree that Mgrito will be theirs as well and they’ll make certain he’s given plenty of love and is well-educated.

Back at Hell-Fuerte, Maria gives rude Rog a few pointers about laughing at the loneliness of old maids like her—and possibly Sinthia!  He gets a figurative wrist slap and apologizes.  She says she enjoyed taking care of them, though, and sees raising kids as one of the most enjoyable things in life.  Too bad in his case because he knows he’ll never have his own for her to raise.  So what, she says.  He’d enjoy all his nieces and nephews if he'll just lighten up with Sinthia.  What good is all his wealth if he doesn’t allow for somebody to share it with?  He insists he’d thought to enjoy it all with Paula, growing old with her and taking care of Margarito with her as if he were his own.  (Forget Mikey.   Those puppy dog eyes and that hangdog expression of his are enough to drive even Maria to drink!  Oh well, Oh-Hell.  Maybe in the next life…..)

At the beach once more, Gus now promises to exchange that homemade ring he’s just given Pau for a real engagement ring once they are back in Tuxtla.  Suddenly Pau has a flashback to the night of the serenade and the wedding ring that Ro-Hell exchanged with the ring she was wearing as part of the contract marriage.  She remembers how he told her that he’d personally chosen it for her, and that it was given with all his heart, a heart full of love for her.  It’s obvious that the eerie parallel is jarring.

Can't wait to see what you are cobbling together, Jardinera.

Missed the Thursday episode. When did Cupcake get her necklace back from Guscake? I are confused.

Sara, I too missed Thursday and am wondering the exact same thing!

Jardinera -- your recaps are well worth the wait. Lookf forward to it.

They didn't show him giving the shell necklace back to her. But did you notice she wasn't wearing it in the scene after that?

Sinthia needs a new wardrobe followed by a nice, long trip to Europe. After so many years of cabin fever at the hacienda she could spread her wings.

MentiRosa sank lower than usual with Fed. It would be nice if he could figure her out before he leaves this mortal coil.

Nothing about the Cupcake's reunion with Gustavo will be easy as evidenced by the ring incident at the end of the episode.

Jarocha has the final word on Thursday's recap. It's all about virgins and Ana Paula. It's worth reopening the post.

She should be teaching a college-level course on Telenovelas. Call it The History and Philosophy of Spanish Telenovelas, from their Original Origins to Modern Day Refritos.

I also wondered when the Cupcake got her necklace back.....I have not missed any episodes yet I don't remember Gus Gus giving it back to her......

As to the ring he gave the Cupcake...how hideous and uncomfortable would that be to wear??? Just wondering....

I'm concerned about Fed biting the dust so soon....did he include the Cupcake in his will?

Novelera in AZ

Looking forward to the recap Jardinera. No comment on that hideous ring Gus gave the runaway wife. I'm thinking Rog should just forget about her and move on but I doubt he'll take my advice lol.

Sara and 5ft., I didn't get a chance to let you know, but thanks for the recaps of Wed. and Thurs. Funny and fun as usual.

While this is not a popular opinion on this blog or on Glue, I nevertheless risk the wrath of the Cupcake haters:
She should have sex with Gustavo before being forced back to the prison with Rohell. Let our star have some fun.

Anon at 2:32, I'll bite. In a real world, yes. But if AP is to end up with Rohell, then follow the romance novel / telenovela conventions--no.

Though Tia is an accomplice in a potential murder scheme, I will give her some credit for caring for Mikey and Cupcake on her own for several years. It seems that only recently that she has started pimping out Cupcake. And I give her credit for coming straight out about her intentions to Fed. That took some guts. However, the look of horror on Fed's face was priceless!

Loved Rohell's altruism in this show. He is helping Mikey to recover from alcoholism and he wants to force Cupcake back and lock her up so she can recover from her asesino delusions. Whatta a guy.

I look forward to catching up on the recaps but in the meantime, get our your party beanies, today 3/3 is the birthday of my hero, Fernando Colunga! woohoo!

Barbara, I have been speculating on when Tia MentiRosa started resenting Miguel and the Cupcake. In view of her rivalry with Marianna over Fed I have to believe it was virtually instantaneous.

No points for altruism for her.

U/A, I agree that Tia probably resented caring for the kids from the beginning. However, she appears to have done her duty even if grudgingly. She could have taken them to an orphanage, dumped them on the street, taken them to one of the relatives of Miguel's father or even found Fed all these years ago. ITA though that altruism would not come to mind when thinking of Rosaura.

Happy Birthday to TBLMOE.....

Jardinera, I too can't wait to see what you are cobbling together.

Since there are no TN today, I have been pondering the word "cobble" - shoes or dessert? And if shoes, what would I cobble for each of the characters. The same with the desserts, what would I cobble together for each of them. I already have a couple of things in mind. It has been a fun mind game or maybe I am going completely senile.

Rosemary

Shoes....

Rogelio: Black cowboy boots with silver toe and hell deoration

Skelator: Snakeskin boots which don't match his suits

Miguel: Elf-toed ones

Gustavo: Brown leather boots with lower heels than the other men's

Hugo: Similar, but with pointier toes because he rides

Cupcake: Wedge-heels with pink ribbon straps

Vainessa: Platform stilettos; she has a pair in every color

Sinthia: Normal riding boots for everyday; stiletto heels for evening, but they're not as up-to-date as Vainessa's

Take your time, Jardinera, and we'll be looking forward to the recap when it's fully cobbled! :D

Re: Cupcake having something with Guscake before ending up with Rohell: I'm actually not against it in principle. (Though in telenovela conventions, as well as romance novel conventions, it's going against the grain and will d-r-a-g out the show by many episodes with drama and complications.) Cupcake should know what a "normal" relationship is like, because she's not going to get that from Rohell!

On the other hand, Rohell is someone that Cupcake "connected" with immediately, and has always had a strong reaction/attraction to, and in the long run I think he has more lasting power in the relationship department. (This is of course assuming that you have an industrial strength beanie and Rohell recovers from his extreme douchebagginess and freakiness.) Gus is just too idealistic and generic--she's die of boredom with him after a while. Only one "cake" per couple, please. LOL.

But yeah, I also agree that Rog is being a freak by thinking he can "force" Cupcake back and that this is a good plan in his campaign to win her back.

But it's damned if he does, damned if he doesn't, though, and in a way it's unfair, because things were going well between them before Bruno interfered. But what he's doing is just as freaky and unfair, to both Miguel and Cupcake. He really can't win, though.

UA, very good!

I thought Rog would do well with steel toed boots because he is always kicking a$$.

I see Cupcake barefoot and pregnant after a night on the beach.

Rosemary

I would LOVE to see Vainessa in a stiletto of every color. So far she has been wearing the SAME unattractive beige pair of platform high-heels EVERYTIME we see her!

Can't you see it's been driving me crazy? We had the same problems with repetitive footwear in Teresa. Teresa wore the same odd diagonal strap black shoes for most of the last several weeks of the novela! But at least she had worn other shoes earlier. Vainessa has been stuck with the same pair of shoes since she first appeared. And they were actually the very first we saw of her too LOL!

Maybe they really are expensive Manolo Blahniks (sp?) and the wardrobe can only afford one pair LOL!

OK - shoe rant off :)

Audrey

With as enamored as Cupcake is with Guscake, losing her virginity to him will have a huge impact, destiny change, live for only one man, blah, blah, blah, on her. Miss drama queen will never be able to forget him. If the avances are true and they do the dirty, she will never truly be committed to Rog. I'm sad.

Of course they set up how many beans might Miguel spill now that Bruno got him drunk again.

Wow, Audrey, I never notice the shoes. I can barely remember the clothes she wears. I'm glad Cupcake is wearing sensible jeans now. It's hard to get around in short dresses and high heels.

And speaking of Bruno plying Miguel with alcohol, I hope someone notices that he had been drinking and try to figure out where it came from. Would Miguel fess up? They would have to be able to smell it on his breath the next day.

You are all so going to love Monday's episode.

Just a heads-up: I will be dropping the recap into the drafts folder either tonight or tomorrow morning and reformatting it. I have the feeling that the "save" feature is what dates the post so I will save after entering the Avances section at the end of the broadcast. If anyone knows whether I'm right or wrong about this please advise as I don't want anyone to miss the recap because of the dating problem.

UA-
Do you mean love as in we will be happy with what happens, or love as in we will hate what happens?

Oh, and I'm speaking as a Rogeliana.

Audrey, I am glad that I am not the only one that notices the shoes. Altair Jarabo is another one that wears the same pair of ugly shoes throughout a TN. Now Barbara Greco (Lucero) in MEPS wore wonderful shoes.

Rosemary

As a Rogeliana, cathyx, I don't think you'll be loving Mondays' episode.

I'm glad it's you taking one for the team, UA. If that episode last week had been preempted for soccer, it would have been me. Better you than me! LOL. I know you'll do a great job.

With that said, I'm a Rogeliana too, and I haven't lost all hope for our resident douchebag and our little cupcake, even after the events of Monday's episode transpire.

My feeling is, we see that Gus can "move on" pretty quickly (as he did wholeheartedly with Sinthia). Cupcake may take longer to move on, especially if Guscake is the guy to deflower her, but I think she can, especially if Gus is not forever patient, waiting waiting waiting faithfully as she sorts out things with Rohell. Cupcake is idealistic and romantic, but I do think she has her limits as well, as most girls (even idealistic ones) do. And especially if Rohell can set aside the douchebaggery for a while and grow up a little bit. (I live in hope, what can I say.)

But we'll see how it goes!

Jardinera, LOVED the recap, you covered everything well. Lots of snark! I laughed out loud with the "we're just chasing our tails" line about Maria and Rohell. YES, this is not the first time he's been delusional! Poor deluded douchebag. Well, we'll see how that pans out as well!

GAH. Monday's. I fixed that but the blogger software messed me up and it reverted back to "Mondays'." Sorry for the unintentional apostrophe abuse.

This has been a tough two weeks for us Rogelianas. Something has to give because it's starting to grate my nerves with this dragged out misunderstanding. On top of that, I can't stand Gusbobo. Ugh.

Jardinera, great recap. Loved your portrait of Fed's reaction to Tia's te amo. What in the world was Tia thinking? That his joy about AP would spill over on her? But a faceoff between Tia and La Vaca would be fun.

Fingers crossed that this TN breaks the rules. That AP would sleep with the love of her life after he came back from the "dead" is understandable. But to me her flashback of the tender moment with Rogelio means he's gotten under her skin - and that she and Rogelio will eventually wind up together.

No idea where this is going, but I'm wondering if there's going be a little cupcake in the oven.

Thanks Jardinera, a masterpiece. How you can make a silk purse out of sow's ear is beyond me, but I am grateful.

After last night, I don't even like AP. What an ingrate! How many men would take in Tia and Mig and well as Dani after she was fired. Rog has been nothing but kind and generous since the wedding. What in world does she expect from him? Maybe next week will be better.

Rosemary

Great job, Jardinera. And I'm thinking the same as Niecie.

Tia MentiRosa makes me a little sicker every episode. I hope Cupcake has the spine to disown her at the end of the series. I am also concerned that until then it will still be only Rogelio who can see through her.

I'm also hoping that our days of being amused at Lady Chatterley's slumming aren't over yet.

As for Rogelio trying to get Miguel to dry out, good luck. He should be able to see that Miguel has to want to.

@Rosemary, I feel the same way. I'm too disgusted with the runaway wife.

Jardinera, thanks for another comprehensive and funny re-do of the "Beach Party" episode. Guscake needed a guitar, but otherwise he's well on his way to wooing Cupcake to the limit.

I like the magic electroshock ring that reminds AP of Rohell's love. No telling what it will do if she and Gus merge their cakes to the point of melting off the frosting.

Praying for Fed to survive long enough to make AP his legal daughter. And maybe for a beyotch slap fest between Elsa la Vaca and Tia Mentirosa.
La Paloma

Thank you so much Jardiners for this great funny, snarky recap. Some of my favorite line:

"Bruno shuts his yammering piehole
"Ka-ching, Ka-ching, Ka-ching Jackpot!"
"Ghost of Gusmas past" Too funny.

I liked when the Tia had to apologize to the Guscake, she looked like she wanted to barf lol.
I am just worried she will rat the Cupcake out to Rohell first chance she gets. I too am hoping Fed lives long enough to get the chance to legally recognize the Cupcake.

I think the Cupcake is feeling a little guilty, especially when Guscake mentioned getting her a real ring once they get back to Tuxtula. I like the Guscake and Cupcake together, but somehow I don't think they are going to last.
Once Rohell finds her that will be it for them.

Miguel is sooo disappointing. I never though that Rohell locked him up for drinking. But of course smarmy Bruno will keep supplying him with the alcohol. Bruno truly is the Skelator of Doom.

Poor Dani never gives up. She tries and tries to reform Mickey but never gets anywhere. Maybe someday.

Jardinera, ANOTHER fantastic recap.

"The Abandoned One, je-je!" Though cruel, I thought it was kinda of funny too! Oh boy, am I bad?

" they’re in for one Ro-Hell of a shock" LOL!

"He’s puzzled. (Note: he’s knitting his brows together.)" LOL! x 2

RE: Shoes
U/A: "Miguel: Elf-toed ones" Perfect fit!
Audrey, I glad you mentioned Vainey's igual footwear. It's been bugging me too! Maybe she has really big feet and this pair is the only one wardrobe has in her size.

La Paloma, "beyotch slap fest between Elsa la Vaca and Tia Mentirosa" Oooowee! I want tickets for this slapdown!

Elsa and Rosaura in a catfight? Perfect. One of the best ones I ever saw was in the awful novela Rebeca and the participants were two 40-something women who were fighting over the mature galan. Plenty of hair-pulling and it ended in a pool.

For those of us who are rooting for Rogelio: Whom would you give Gustavo to at the end?

Thank you Jardinera for the entertaining recap, which was all the more precious beings my cable has been out all weekend. Loved your descriptions of Feds reaction to Tia's confession, double yuck.
As a Rohell fan I am disappointed, but clearly AP will likely end up marrying Gus at the end of the TN in some awkward and anticlimactic wedding, with another off key mariachi band.
I disagree with whoever said if Rohell could have sex he would have had a chance with AP. if she loved Rohell she'd never let that stop her from being with him. I think we have to face facts that the story is being written this way.

Hi y'all! UrbanA: Wow! I loved the shoe descriptions. I was LOL at Michael's elfen toed suggestion!
=============
I know the adelantes show us the inevitable -- but like with J.R. Ewing it could all be just a dream. I sort of hope so along with the rest of Team Rog. On the other hand, I think if Pau somehow ends up back at the Hell-Fuerte for whatever reasons --contract obligations or wife-nabbing-- that for sure Gus will suddenly decide to accept Rogelio's job offer. THAT will make for some must see tv also once you mix back in jealous Sin and Effer with insanely jealous Ro-Hell. Talk about your deadly cocktail....

Oh, I'd give Gus to sinthia' I liked them together, good balance of light and dark. Gus and AP are like honey mixed with sugar yuck.
UA is your cable out too?

I'm thinking this telenovela is going to need a sacrificial lamb of sorts. I don't see any of these star-crossed lovers, male or female, opting for a different one of the current options. They are all so strongly drawn to the person they love that I see it impossible to switch without some catastrophic cause. It would have to be an earth-shattering experience--JMHO.

I've only perused the comments but I wanted to throw in my two pesos on Vainys footwear: I read somewhere the wearing a neutral color will lengthen the leg visually. Is Mar really short?

The cowboy boots they put AP in are bordering on elf toed. Every time I see the I think of Cruz and Fer's wedding.

Jardinera- I haven't read the recap yet but I can tell from everyone's favorite lines it's another Jardinera gem :). Can't wait to read it.

PS can't remember who said it but perish the thought of a cupcake in the oven.... but I am very afraid. I can just see that happening. But hang on.... Were there any pregnancies in Teresa? Major characters. Not Esperanza.

No pregnancy would break the traditional rules of Televisa novelas. That's why Cupcake needs to be back in Rogelio's hacienda within the next three weeks (or ten episodes). A different conflict would also be more interesting for a change.

And a different shell necklace for the Cupcake would be a good thing:

http://i756.photobucket.com/albums/xx204/Venus193/Jewelry/IMG_0049.jpg

My cable is fine, but since I'm the Monday person I watch the episode online in advance so I can post the recap as the credits roll. It also allows me more time to perfect the literary elements.

I notice the footwear also--at least of the main characters. Clutsy, dowdy looking espadrilles for Rosie, Dani and AP generally. The other gals when they dress up are in much fancier toe-trim. Those characters should be wearing Manolo Blahniks, but truly, who could tell? Fettishists?

Cathyx: Sorry I didn't answer your question last night. It's a good episode although you might not like the plot developments.

About the shoes: I have a theory that the wardrobe department doesn't go nuts on them because too many pairs would not allow time for the actresses to break them in. Since we rarely see close-ups of feet it might be considered more important for the actress to be comfortable because when your feet hurt nothing else feels right.

And trust me, if I didn't have such bad knees I would have several pairs of platform stilettos myself!

Now on to another subject: Hats. Every etiquette rule I have ever read about them dictates that men must remove their hats indoors. Since when do western hats get a pass on this?

Jardinera, I finally got around to reading the recap and I couldn't agree more with all of your comments.

I can't believe AP is going to give Tia a pass on lying about Gus being alive. That was the reason she got into this mess in the first place.

I hope that Miguel, in his drunken stupor, tells Rog that Dani talked to AP.

Since we're only on episode 46 out of over 100? 150?, there will have to be so many more back and forths between our love triangles. Maybe Gus will fall for a new character that isn't in the show yet. Maybe Cin will. So I have to keep telling myself that this show is still practically in it's infancy, and there's still a lot of time for AP and Rog to get back together.

Isn't the final on March 18th in Mexico? So there's 170+ episodes? Someone please confirm that's why too TdA for me. I'm really nervous now.

Damn iPhone. Way too not why too

170 episodes is the current average length for Televisa drama novelas. It's less expensive to produce 4 of those than 6 series of 110 episodes each.

A lot of old rules have been broken in the last couple of years, but I dearly hope that this one ends with Rogelio on his feet and tango-ing with the Cupcake.

This comment has been removed by the author.

UA-I lived for a time in Texas and Western hats do not get a pass. Men there take their hats off in the house, in stores, etc and they take them off in the presence of women.

Maybe the hat rule is different in Mexico. I do see the peons taking their hats off, just Rog leaves his on. Perhaps rich land owners are allowed to keep them on.

Perhaps Rog keeps his on like a king wore his crown in feudal days.

So, Rogelianas have 170 episodios to see if Ernesto comes to the rescue and Gus falls out of love with AP or really does die?

Ok, so 170 episodes and we're on #48. We have a long ride ahead of us. Better find a comfortable seat and a full box of tissues because we're going to be here a while.

Madeleine, I don't know WHEN you lived in Texas, but wearing hats indoors has been common here for decades. Men routinely wear their hats while seated dining indoors in mixed comapny at restaurants. When I was a child that would have been considered VERY bad manners. I don't notice any doffing of hats for the ladies, etc. Things have changed!

I finally got around to reading the recap, Jardinera and I loved it. Fabulous details and the perfect amount of snark.

I adored "candy-shell of obsinacy." Absolutely perfect phrasing.

Like others, I found "ghost of Gusmas past" hilarious.

I wish someone would just shoot Bruno and put us all out of our misery.

I absolutely cannot wait to find out what sort of skulduggery is contained in the contract. We already know about the 10 days for each day she doesn't fulfill the contract. How many extra days is she up to? Has she even remembered that?

Thanks for another of your stellar recaps. If I single out any of your lines for comment or recognition, they are usually examples of your rapier wit. Today I'd like to point out a couple of lines that instead of being hilarious, are insightful and a little sad... and very well-written:

"She remembers how he told her that he’d personally chosen it for her, and that it was given with all his heart, a heart full of love for her.  It’s obvious that the eerie parallel is jarring."

"He declares that any man who rejects a queen like her is nothing but a fool.  She appreciates the sentiment and kisses him for it, hoping it’ll be just like old times, but it isn’t."

So now Rog is in the detox and rehab business? How noble.

Too bad the cops will be coming soon to arrest Mikey for stealing David's truck (remember?).

My thanks to Urban Anthropologist, Elvira, Sara, and Kat for the great recaps you guys presented us with this week. I enjoyed each and every one.

Carlos

As of Friday; we're in episodes 155; for the next two weeks; they'll be broadcasted 1/2 each day (5 episodes in total); on March 18th final 2 hrs special (total 162)

I finally watched the actual episode (cable is back), and it really doesn't seem like a bad thing to keep Miguel locked up. He's not unhappy, and it keeps him out of trouble, now if we could get Bruno to stop bringing him booze...
So how many actual episodes left, the math I read above doesn't make sense to me. Only 1/2 episode a day?

Audrey: Maybe I should have been more clear. My Father's side has deep Texas roots. My brothers still live there. The men in my family always take their hats off indoors, in restaurants when dining, and in the presence of women. It was my Grandmother's rule. No hats in the house or in the presence of a lady.

Very admirable, Madelaine. My hat's off to your people.

My husband watched the Friday episode with me. His take was Rohell just needs a little anger management and he'll be fine.

starting tomorrow; they'll only show 1/2 hour for the next two weeks; wich is the equivalent of 5 episodes. The show ends on March 18th with a 2 hr final (155+5+2=162 episodes total.

162 seems a little more palatable to me.

So that number pertains to episodes in Mexico? How many episodes here? We are on 48, so is that really episode 96? About 35 episodes left?
I can't imagine what it is like only seeing one half hour at a time.

Thanks to all of you for your enthusiastic approval of the long-winded slog this weekend. ? ; > )
===========
Welcome to Pam!
================
Thanks to anon today for the episodio count clarification. Yeah, 162 is about all I'd care to handle of this one myself. That's most of a pregnancy and I know I'll feel just as achy and cranky by the time this one is over--especially if Rogelio isn't up and walking around and back to his old self again!!

As for hats, I've always been taught a man removes his hat inside (barns and sheds being the exception) and whenever a lady arrives, one doffs his hat in deference to the "fairer sex"--meaning more pleasing/pleasant/nicer looking, etc. for you in the P.C. crowd.

Emarie-
I believe anonymous is saying that only the last week is it 1/2 hour shows. You know, to drag the ending out.

I should have said the last 2 weeks.

"...and back to his old self again!!"
----
Whatever *that* means LOL.

I'm not convinced he was all sweetness and light before the accident. I know we have seen how sweet he was with Vainy during their courtship 7 years earlier, but that says nothing about how he was with everyone else.

Thanks for another great recap Jardinera.

I liked hoe the writers didn't run in circles with the Federico/Ana Paula relationship and had her rejecting him for being his mother's lover or something like that.

Will the tell all motel become the give all motel on monday?

It's not so common to wear hats in either Veracruz or Mexico City. I think from what liitle I've seen of hat wearing guys in the cities, they do take their hats off inside. But my mom is from a small town in Oaxaca and men there tend to wear those cowboy style hats (although much less fancy ones than Rogelio's) and they never seem take them off at all. I really don't know much about hat etiquette so I've never considered that to be offensive or anything, many etiquette rules aren't followed there much anyway.

The show has been a 1 hour show until friday but its success has made the network decide to split the timeslot with Amor Bravío, which starts on monday.

Jarocha

Thank you, Jardinera, THANK YOU. I am new to the novellas and this site. I've only had about my 5th Spanish class which is so challenging for me. However, I have printed a copy of your recap and I am using it to go over the show which I have saved on my DVR. It's so perfect paragraph to scene that even I have a good understanding. I will treasure your recap and use it to help me to learn Spanish. Thank you again.

Hi Madeleine! My grandparents had the very same rules (they weren't in TX). No one else around here, however, seems to remember those "old-fashioned" rules. I guess modern hat wearing guys feel naked without it on. I've been all over the state, plenty of it in rural areas even and they just never take their big cowboy hats off (unless at home I suppose)!

Audrey

Welcome chrisinmiami!
I am learning Spanish, too; and one of the brilliant commenters (perhaps one of the recappers) wrote a program that pulls the spanish as well as english subtitles off. I have found this a tremendous help; I want to thank whoever does this, profusely:

http://users.frii.com/markzimm/lqnpa/latest

Chrisinmiami: Welcome! Make sure you have the CC on screen as you watch and tape. It helps you hear the cadence, the usual pronunciation of the words you're seeing and eventually, you'll find that you can understand little by little what they say without the use of the words. (That won't come until you've mastered enough vocabulary and most often used tenses.) It won't happen over night, but it does happen over a period of months. Good luck with your studies. It's definitely worth the effort.

Chrisinmiami: Bienvenidos!

Here is a program that will help you with everyday words:

http://learner.org/resources/series75.html

(How do we make these live now?)

After watching this series twice I was able to take a vacation in Spain and have a basic conversation. Disfrutala!

Just for the record, I'm thinking/praying the hook up with Gusto is a dream/fantasy as another writer suggested. We've been jerked around before when the hero or heroine seemed to sleep with someone else other than the final love interest but it was just the dream of the competing love interest. I definitely remember that happening in "Destilando Amor." If Ana really sleeps with Gusto I will seriously be heart broken. I'm almost afraid to watch.

I don't have a problem with it. I have always had issues with the idea that the heroine (unless she's specifically over 25) is supposed to be a virgin until the hero gets her.

In fact, the idea that the Cupcake could be a virgin didn't even occur to Rogelio until Maria suggested it. I don't recall them even talking about it before or after the wedding. That's a concession to the 21st century.

What I don't want is for Cupcake to get pregnant.

Remember what other rule got broken in LFdD: The heroine got pregnant by her rapist. That just about made me sick.

thanks for a great recap, jardinera.

I just wanted to add that in addition to the Cupcake's flashback to Rogelio's words when he gve her an engagement ring, Gustavo also pointed out that rather than sounding angry with her husband, she sounded disappointed and sad (I think). He seemed to be somewhat upset at what he was picking up. I think the cupcakes are going to do the deed, but down the pike I think Ana Paula is going to be conflicted, and while I don't know how, I have the feeling she and Rogelio will get back together again...at least that's what I'm hoping.

I don't see Gus and Cinthia together in th elong run, because he is too straight arrow and idealistic to love someone like her -spoiled, untruthful, manipulative, narcissistic, if not downright evil. She's not evil now, but has the potential to be, I think.

I agree, nj sue. I missed what Guscake said to Cupcake when I saw this (sans CCs) earlier. They made a *point* of having Gus notice that she was sounding more disappointed with her husband, rather than just not caring for him. I think it is very significant.

I also think that Cupcake is very conflicted with her feelings for Rohell. There's chemistry between them and has been from the start. Cupcake may not have recognized it as that, since her first encounters with Rohell were, shall we say, volatile, but even before she met Guscake, she had a "something" starting with Rohell.

Her connection with Guscake was simpler and more obvious, more "safe" and so she allowed herself to recognize it as such. But what she has/will have with Rohell has the potential to be very strong in the end. (Boy, I read too many romance novels!) But still, I think that's how it is.

Elvira, I sure hope you are right. I might have to give up TNs if Rog is left alone. He(JS) is one of my original telenovias.

Rosemary

I'm curious UA:

"I don't have a problem with it. I have always had issues with the idea that the heroine (unless she's specifically over 25) is supposed to be a virgin until the hero gets her."

You find it more palatable that the heroine is a virgin if she is over 25? Wouldn't that be less common?

Jarocha

Sort of a general observation: How different it must be for Rohell now, with the addition of Cupcake in his life. Setting aside for a moment all the telenovela horse manure, the douchebaggery, the extreme Cupcakiness -- imagine how much Rohell's life has changed recently. Before Cupcake, he was solitary, always in a bad mood, and just stuck in his own douchebaggy rut, not all that interested in anything other than making money and being a foul-tempered douchebag.

Now he has not only this lovely (but contrary) young woman in his life, but also her manipulative, old turd of an aunt, her loserific brother, and her squeaky-voiced friend. All of them staying at the Hacienda (off and on) and with their own drama and everything. He not only got a wife, but her whole entourage! LOL. And also, there are all these young people in his life now. It's not like Rohell is old, but up until now it seems like he's been interacting most with servants, business associates, and Maria. (We won't count Sinthia here.)

Rohell's life must be so different, full of stuff to worry about, but also stuff to look forward to. (Granted, he's mostly worried these days. And filled with douchey bitterness. LOL.)

Just thinking out loud, never mind me. . .

Jarocha, I wouldn't believe that a heroine over 25 would be a virgin; I find it hard to believe that anyone over 19 would be a virgin.

I don't think that Cupcake's virginity was an issue for Rogelio before... but her getting it on with Gustavo after would be another story.

Elvira,

I love your word "loserific". I wonder how much this BIL has cost Rog, all of that hand surgery could not have come cheap. I don't think I have heard a "thank you" from him yet.

Rosemary

Elvira, I love how you love Rohell.

Hola Amigos! I'm back from Egypt as of last night (and safe). I had a great time and am very sad to be going back to work tomorrow. Seems as though things have progressed as predicted in this show while I was away.

For those interested, here's a link to my Egypt photos: http://vinette.shutterfly.com/1729

I will also do a write-up of my trip that I'll send out to friends. I'll include those of you whose e-mail addresses I have, but if anyone else is interested, let me know. I'll probably send it out tomorrow night or Tues morning.

@Emarie: awesome site, thanks!

nj sue & Elvira: I agree about Gus/Sin not working out (as they are now). But, should Gus stick around through some of the AP/Rohell drama that is sure to come, maybe he will lose some of that idealistic side? Sin does seem like a good person underneath the rebellious streak she is on. Suppose we have 100+ episodes to find out.

LOL, Barbara, I do, I do love Rohell, douchebag that he is. His grumpiness amused me from the start (the violence, not so much).

I think a lot of us can identify with someone who has had such a hard time of it, a time without hope, and now he's got hope again and he doesn't want to give that up. I think that's a big reason why so many of us are rooting for Rohell. (Well, that and Jorge Salinas puppydog eyes.)

I do like Jose Ron, though. I don't dislike Gus, I just don't think he's right for Cupcake. He hasn't got the "fire" in him that Rohell does.

I also think that Gus, because of him being young and "normal" and without baggage, has more of a sense of entitlement (to Cupcake's heart) which is why it was so easy for him to be judgmental of her and reject her when she fails to live up to his idealistic standards. I compare that to Rohell's look of grateful amazement (and puppydog eyes) at any bit of affection that Cupcake directs at him and there's just no comparison! Team Rohell all the way! LOL.

But man, he is SUCH a DOUCHE sometimes! And a freak. My goodness! In real life we would just not be able to tolerate a lot of his crap. But I have a sturdy beanie and this is not real life! LOL.

Vivi, glad to see you back. I've missed your contributions. I'm glad your trip was great. I hope to have a chance to see your pictures later.

Elvira, He is "SUCH a DOUCHE" that when I fall for those looks he gives Cupcake, it makes liking him a guilty pleasure.

Welcome back Vivi. Loved seeing the pics since Egypt is somewhere I've always wanted to go. I'd heard that the pyramids were right on the edge of Cairo but it's still surprising to see how close.

Kelly

Welcome back, Vivi. I'm still looking through your photos; they're amazing.

I haven't been to Egypt yet and I hope I can manage that before I get too much older. If I ever win the lottery it will be a priority. I've seen Stonehenge in Britain and I have to believe that the pyramids are even more spectacular.

Elvira:

"Rohell's look of grateful amazement" is a terrific description!! ITA! It's easier to side with Rogelio because he is the underdog and knows it -- but so does AP and Viewerville. I just think it is going to be one RoHell of a rollercoaster ride till things are settled now. Nothing's certain. ITA that the old rules of telenovela have been thrown away, especially since "Teresa" who slept with her first boyfriend but ended up choosing door #2 and sleeping with her hubby.

ViViDC: Welcome back, amiga! What an adventure your vacation must have been! We missed you here.

Why oh why is my DVR still showing the 10EST time slot? The past few weeks have been murder. I am a little old lady who likes to go to bed early.

Does anyone know anything? I thought Univision was going to go back to the old schedule this week.

My thoughts and prayers are with the UFCS recappers?

:(

Had a houseful of company all weekend. Wonderful, but when I needed a break, I snuck away to read a few more lines of Jardinera's funny, funny recap. Thank you.

Good to have Vivi back, safe and sound and hopefully ready to comment on LQNPA.

A couple of quick observations on our collective thoughts on what will and won't happen as we count down the final 35.

I really appreciated Jarocha's comments on the virginal heroine problem and how it is changing. I would say, however, that Teresa may not be the best example. She was a schemer, a sort of antiheroine if I'm remembering my English 101 terms correctly. AP is a different matter, right out of the novela rosa textbook. For her to end up sleeping with two men -- without a death of one of them or some other catastrophe (rape of Sophia in FELS) -- would be a real breakthrough. Maybe it will happen! A new day for Televisa.

The reason that I see the "cakes" as destined to be together is that they are the same type: disingenuous, non-too-savvy, kind-hearted, young professionals, with stubborn, self-righteous streaks. For AP to fall for and end up with Rogelio means that she has to walk down a very different path, to the proverbial bad boy, who in this case is very, very bad. He'll change for the better, but so will she have to change some to fully accept him. That makes for better TV, but strikes me as a stretch.

However, anything can happen in TVland, including sudden deaths, audience surveys, new characters thrown into the mix in the last two weeks, etc. And I give it to the writers that they are keeping us guessing and talking about it.

And, since she is the girl who couldn't love, maybe she ends up with neither one as in at least one other version of the story.

I'm just very happy to have a novela running that I look forward to watching.

Thanks much Jardinera for the recap in all it's loving detail. Great read!

Welcome back Vivi! Wonderful that you had a great time. Even more wonderful that you are safely back. Sorry that you had to go back to work today. :(

Audrey

Wow, Vivi, Egypt! How fantastic that must have been. I'll look at your pictures as soon as I have a moment. I've always wanted to go there.

Most of you know that William Levy is going to be on Dancing with the Stars. Although I'm really excited to see him and watch the show, I realize that he will probably never do another TN again. Once the American audience gets a look at him, he will get snatched up big time by the entertainment industry and pay him way bigger bucks than a TN ever will.

Only too glad to share that site, but the site is the invention and property of one of the brilliant recappers!

I think even speculating about Sinthia's getting together is a moot point folks after I actually watched Friday's episode. Gus belongs to AP, I'm afraid. oh poo!

There is a deplorable lack of suitable single guys, just like real life, I guess.

I'm not commenting much more because I think you all know my position on whom Cupcake should end up with. In view of what's happened in the last couple of years in TN's anything could happen:

FELS (and PdG before it): Sophia was raped by the villain before knowing Juan.

LFdD: Lucia was impregnated by her rapist and does not yet have Ivan's baby by the end of the series.

Teresa: Got it on w/first love before choosing 2nd love (whom I still believe she'd ditch later for a richer younger guy). No pregnancy for Teresa. Aurora (she who is now Cupcake) does the same, but will stay w/Dr Mariano.

Yeah, with Aurora (a "good girl" and one of the main characters of "Teresa") sleeping with "nice guy" Martin while waiting for Doctor Hottie (aka Mariano) to come to his senses, I'd say that the telenovela law is no longer iron-clad.

I feel that the time investment we've had establishing Rohell's and Cupcake's relationship up until now means that she's destined for him. Of course, no one knows what this producer will decide in the end (if he really wants to be lame-brained, he can have Cupcake run off with Esteban or whomever—never say never!) but to me, the choice should obviously be Rohell. We have many episodes to go, plenty of time for him to clean up his act and overcome his general douchebagginess.

Vivi, it's so nice to see you back! We missed you around here! Glad that you had a good time in Egypt.

Interesting. I kept only one eye on Teresa. I didn't realize that Dr. M. was the second man in Aurora's life. So she was with someone before Mariano?

More conventional character, more conventional situation, no pregnancy, no rape. The novela world may indeed be changing.

Hey all. Thanks for the welcome back. Sounds like I came back at just the right time-- when AP may or may not get it on with Gus. Regardless of who she ends up with at the end, I hope she DOES get her first experience with Gus, who is more at the same level.

Aurora in Teresa is a good example of breaking the rule. So is Candy in Tontas, who married (and had premarital sex with), had a baby for, and divorced Galan #1 (Valentino Lanus); and had premarital sex with and then marries Galan #2 (Jaime Camil), who is also divorced with one child from his divorce and another out of wedlock child with his former girlfriend.

OK, back to slogging through the backlog of work e-mails.

Vivi! What a wonderful experience you had. Your pictures are amazing! Egipt looks incredible. I'm sorry you had to go back to work today after coming home from such a long trip yesterday but I bet it was all worth it. I'd love to hear all about it.

UA: Oh, I understood differently. I don't think it's so impossible for a woman over 25 to still be a virgin but that isn't so common now as telenovelas make it seem. I think the problem with Televisa's novelas is that most of them are remakes from decades ago when the views on sex, especially in Latin America, were so conservative and some of the new stories are even based on that old format.

Travel Lady: The reason I used Teresa too as an example was not really for the Teresa character but for the Aurora character, played by Ana Brenda. Aurora wasn't the title character but she was the resident good girl you were made to root for. The love of her life was Mariano but she slept with her first boyfriend, who was an awesome guy, and nothing bad came of it. A while later, her boyfriend realized that she didn't love him like she loved Mariano and he ended the relationship, she later ended up with the guy she loved. Taking into account that this is the same team that worked on Teresa, I don't think their ideas on love and sex part ways all that much from what that Telenovela stated with that storyline: that there was nothing wrong with what Aurora had done and that sex with Martín didn't necessarily tied her to him or made her "unworthy" of Mariano (though Mariano, sweet as he was, almost went through all the young women in that novela so such position would have been quite hipocritic).

I meant, hypocritical.

Traveling Lady, sorry, I hadn't seen the replies. Martín, Aurora's first boyfriend, was a wonderful guy. If I could choose a boyfriend from that novela, he would be it: funny, charming, smart, patient and sweet (although Arturo had that hot, hot, hot thing going for him). Too bad Aurora never could forget Dr Angsty.

Jardinera: thank you for the excellent recap. Always a delight.

"give me a jaded macho man any time" and "darling dimples" were a few of my favorites. I also wanted to "throw up in my mouth" over Rosa's admission to Fed. Ack. Blech.

Jardinera, your care and effort are always evident at every time. I so appreciate everything you do!

I can't blame Ana if she and Gus are together but agree with everyone else this is going to complicate things unbelievably if indeed she is to end up with Rogelio. I did think Ana might have had more than 1 thought about Rog but Gus has obviously pushed any feelings she might have had for Rog aside. Now I'm thinking they might not end up together after all. Hmmm.

Thanks, Jarocha and Vivi, for further information and thoughts about Aurora in Teresa.

Another random thought or two, just to keep the conversation going -- I think we all agree that changes are afoot in "the rule".

There are a few recent novelas that are expressly about changes in women's roles and/or family life, where the virgin rule has been broken and maybe to make a point. Tontas is one. Candy's advice column and women's center were all about women taking command of their lives, even if expressed in a comic way. I must have been the only viewer out there who watched and loved Palabra de Mujer, which was about modern, urban Mexican women who had multiple relationships, were single mothers, were divorced and remarried. In Alma de Hierro, Angelica Boyer's character leaves her abusive husband and takes up with a married man, whom she eventually marries (I think I remember that sequence right).

On the other hand, novelas that take place in el campo, with the naive, virginal young woman finding love with el principe azul -- the apparent plot of this novela whether she picks Gustavo or Rogelio -- are throwbacks to an earlier time and don't lend themselves as easily to modernization by virtue of the plot line itself. I would guess that why rapes are used in LFDD and FELS to complicate the plot line rather than giving the heroine some personal power.

I don't really care who AP ends up with (getting there is proving to be more interesting to me than the result), but it would be an interesting challenge to the customary plot line for her to sleep with Gustavo and marry Rogelio. Perhaps the same team that gave us Teresa (and, more important, Aurora) will again alter the tried-and-true here.

More than I meant to write. That's what I get for taking a vacation day today.

Excellent recap as usual Jardinera.

My very favorite line in this episode was when Mersnotty tells Sinthia the name of Gus Cakes' former novia, ANA. Then Sinthia says "No me importa del nombre." Right Sinthia. If only you know what you were saying!

Traveling Lady: Palabra de Mujer was also produced by José Alberto Castro, the producer of Teresa and La Que No Podía Amar.

I think novelas that take place in small towns tend to go back to those old ideas on how a woman must behave because small towns still have those stigmas and the writers can use the old familiar storylines that worked before in other novelas. Mexicans started to change their mindsets back in the 90's but the small towns, which have less access to technology and media tend to be more closed off in these issues.

Thank you again for adding to such a variety of interesting threads. One learns a lot on these blogs despite it being no more than a telenovela blog. You just can't beat it with a stick!

Vivi, the photos from your trip gave me a case of travel envy! Good to have you safely back.
