Abismo de pasión #87 7/12/12: I desire you, but you’re my brother. Even if you’re not, you’re marrying another. Your brother loves me, but you don’t know he’s your brother.
Last night we left Ramona on the verge of telling Augusto The Truth, Augusto not wanting to hear The Truth, and Marta feverishly swinging her skillet in his direction. I quote: “You won’t go anywhere until I tell you everything I know about that night, and then you make your own conclusions about who was supposed to be in the car with Rosie, if Stefie, or her sister.. Carmina.( THERE!! FINALLY!!! Now lets see if he can handle the TRUTH!! Good, cause I am tired already of swinging that skillet at his head by now!)”
Tonight the question lingers...was it Estefania or Carmina who was boinking Rosendo? Ramona says she has reason to believe Carmina is behind all the the trouble concerning Stef lo these many years. Remember Carmina was about to leave on the exact day that Stef and Ros had their accident. Didn’t Stef lock Carmina in her room that day? Elisa was little but she remembers it well. Maybe Stef was trying to prevent Carmina from running off with Rosendo. Also, Stef told Ramona something just before she died. Ramona didn’t understand it at the time but Stef said, “I had to stop them.” “Detenerlos.” Poor, dense Augusto tries hard to sort through this new information.
Cynderella, are you watching? Your boyfriend looks über hot and threatening right now, all sweaty and panting and in charge. His big belt buckle is gleaming in the sunlight like a turgid pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. He’s pointing the gun at Carmina. She can’t believe the wretched Ingrid, who was supposed to be gone, put him up to this. Tough, he says, ING might be a wretch but she’s his wretch and she wants the creamsicle squashed. Lots of insults and pushing around and “no me provoques”, “beg for your life”, “you won’t shoot you coward”, but Carmina manages to come out of it intact. Darn.
Double darn. Flor and Dam Stupid are lolling in bed nekkid. She’s happy and clingwrappy, he’s so bored he wants to visit her dad in jail. Whoa, WTF?..here comes the black widow scuttling through the door. Too bad she didn’t catch them en flagrante which was, I am certain, her desire. “Sheesh mom, you haven’t heard of knocking?” (Uh, you haven’t heard of locking the door?) Fina feigns disapproval. Flor feigns embarrassment but she can’t hide her smirk when Dam announces they are planning to see Padre about their marriage. Fina ruins Flor’s moment when she gushes about holding her nieto in her arms very soon.
Speaking of the alleged grandchild, let’s visit Sabrina. She holds her belly and recalls the slimeball Paolo promising she can count on him. She feebly smiles, having convinced
herself she is in good hands. Eeks.
Downstairs, Enrique warns BegoneYa against Paolo. She reminds him Sabrina is his sis, not his daughter, so stop playing the role of daddy. (Tomar papeles = play the role of? Does anybody know if that's what this means?) Paolo might not be prince charming but according to Carmina he’s not that bad. Enrique advises mom to stop letting someone like Carmina influence her decisions. She should see a psychologist because of her low self esteem. She needs to get a life.
Ramona has managed to get Augusto inside her hut so she can tell him more. She doesn’t think it’s right that Stef and Elisa have had to bear the brunt of someone else’s perfidy all these years. Augusto agrees that Ramona makes sense, but her opinion still doesn’t prove anything. But wait, there’s more. Ramona asks did he ever boink Carmina before Stef died? “Por supuesto que no! I loved Stef!” Ramona says she knows Carmina was pregnant before she married Augusto, and if she wasn’t doing it with Augusto then it must have been another man, and Ramona bets it was Rosendo.
Here is where Augusto reacts true to form. He thinks it’s all lies and demands proof. Ramona suggests he ask Doc Tovar because he was attending Carmina at the time. (Hey, that’s not fair. Doc shouldn’t be divulging info about patients.) Augusto stomps out, threatening she’ll pay if she’s wrong, but the seed of doubt has been planted.
Gab’s arm must be getting tired, he’s still aiming that gun at the TangelHo’s head. He says he knows she had something to do with Kenia’s death because Kenia found the tickets and was probably threatening to tell Augusto. Carmina pants that a note was found, Kenia was desperate and killed herself. Gab calls bull***t on her, says she is capable of anything. Carmina changes tacks, says Augusto found out she faked the DNA results, kicked her out, and she wants to die anyway. “Go ahead and kill me!” she commands, “Shoot me now!”
Triple darn. It worked. Gabino decides to slime her instead of shooting her. He says if she’s been dumped then why doesn’t she hang with him? (Blech, really?) Screw his lover. (!?!) He sadistically smooches her and says he’s got tons of dough. He’s going to buy Cielo Abierto and have a much bigger penis, errrr, ranch than Rosendo Arango. Who cares what he says next because he decides to do a 360 and show off his bodacious bod. Where was I? Too bad, that stupid bandana hand was a buzz kill. No wait, there’s that belt buckle and I can’t take my eyes off The Zone. Where was I again? It’s hard to concentrate. Carmina calls him a coward and stalks off, leaving Gabino slumping at the edge of the grave. Dude, you disappointed me. What are you going to with that hole? Plant carrots? You missed your chance to plant the big one.
Over in the Harangue-O kitchen Useless Vicente (with a scab on his lip from the Braulio backhand) needles Antonia about his true parentage. He heard she and Gabino talking about it. She swears on all that is sacred that Braulio is his papa. Nice going mom, you just made sure that some dire physical ailment or accident will befall your son, not that I care personally.
Gael and Ingrid are in the cantina. She is certain Kenia didn’t kill herself like Gael thinks. He says he thinks nada, he just saw the letter that Kenia wrote. Ingrid wants to read the letter and Gael says he’ll check with Elisa. He gives her an envelope with some money in it, a loan so she can dump Gabino. He says count on him if she needs help, especially to get away from Gabino. After he leaves she dries her crocodile tears, hungrily opens the envelope, and bitterly complains because the money is not enough for anything. Gawd she’s a whiner.
Gabino rides into town and sees Vicente holding up the lamppost. He wants to show Chente something. He drags him off to someplace called Hacienda Los Beltrán, says he’s going to buy it and it will be bigger and better than Harangue-O. He already owns Cielo Abierto and he’ll be the boss of everything and the woman he’s wanted all his life will fall at his feet. (Does he mean Carmina? Gross.) Chente gets a funny look on his face and admits he heard Gab talking with mom that Gabino is his father. Chente thinks the possibility is totally cool, but Gabino’s not on board. He calls Chente a blockhead (tarugo) and leaves him.
Elisa and Paloma talk about Kenia. There was something a little off with her, but she seemed nice enough except for that bit about stalking Elisa’s dad. Paloma admits she’s not talking to Gael about it because they broke up. She knows Gael only hooked up with her because he couldn’t get Elisa, and now that she and Dam are siblings... Elisa rolls her eyes, “we’re not hermanos and I’m sure Padre Lupe told Gael that.” She explains Carmina has been lying to dad all these years and dad kicked the Cheatin’ Ho out onto the street.
Somehow Elisa feels calmer because she and dad have reconnected. However she has lost Dam forever because he is back together with Florencia and that’s all she’s going to say on the subject. (She’s such a liar; she’s going to be whining about this for weeks.)
Tonia’s having a bad day in the kitchen. Now Braulio is there giving her a hard time about what Vicente said about Gab being his dad. (I don’t remember that.) She goes on the offensive, how can he even accuse her when Brau himself married her while still in love with another woman? He swears since they married and immediately formed a family he has never betrayed her. She bares all her teeth and basically says neither has she. In fact she has to beg him for just a kiss so he should admit he hasn’t been the best husband. Tick tock, tick tock.
Gabino gets home to the little blue house and IrritatING is all over him. “Did you kill her? Huh? Did you? Did you?” Gab says no because Kenia killed herself. IrritatING goes into irritating overdrive. She knows Kenia did NOT kill herself. Gab says if anyone is responsible it is Augusto. IrritatING vows she won’t leave until Carmina and Augusto both pay for her daughter’s death. (Two dirty birds with one stone, works for me.) It seems to me that Gabino is growing weary of IrritatING’s shrieks and hollers.
Dam and Clingwrap visit Padre L, they want to get married ASAP. They want him to perform the ceremony. It’s all arranged. Flor is ecSTATIC (sorry I couldn’t resist), but Dam is meh as usual.
"Hey! Boobies!" (Thank you Sara.) Oh lookee, here comes a pair of ripe melons with Elisa attached. Flor gleefully shares their happy news, “Damian y yo nos vamos a casar.” Flor clings. Elisa stares. Dam stares back. Elisa stares back back. Enough already.
Augusto crashes into the clinic and busts into Doc Tovar’s office. “We need to talk!” Doc, who is with a patient, says he is busy and it will have to wait. Now I see where Elisa gets her Me First syndrome, because Augusto demands to talk to doc NOW. Thankfully he waits for the patient to leave before demanding to know if Carmina was pregnant before he married her. Urp, doc looks like he ate something rotten and admits yes, Carmina was pregnant.
Why didn’t doc tell him? Doc says he assumed Augusto knew, why else would he have married Carmina so quickly? Gusto doesn’t buy it and Doc admits Carmina begged him to keep his mouth shut and that was his mistake. Gusto starts whining about Doc being his best friend and how long had he been in collusion with Carmina? Doc tells him Carmina deceived him too; she’s always lied to them. Not good enough for Gusto, he howls some more and stomps out the door. I was amused by his “best friend” rants, what he knows about friendship could fit on the head of a pin.
Back at the chapel of cheerlessness Flor is twisting the knife. Isn’t Elisa thrilled at their happy news? “Of course,” mutters Elisa, “felicidades.” Dam Stricken can’t get out of there fast enough. Padre tells Elisa he gets the feeling Dam doesn’t know they are not hermanos. (Why should Elisa answer when she can cry instead?)
But wait, she speaks. She explains that when she went to tell him she found Dam Randy and Flor sleeping together. It’s better that he doesn’t know they aren’t hermanos. “That’s absurd,” says Padre. (So true Elisa, just listen to yourself.) Here come the waterworks. Boo hoo she’ll never be happy. She’s burning with jealousy. Too many things have happened between them for them to ever be happy. Padre doesn’t think Dam Wrong will ever be happy with that girl, he obviously doesn’t love her. Elisa reminds him Dam was planning to marry Flor before Elisa came onto the scene. She tries to get Padre to promise not to tell Dam they aren’t related but Padre refuses, thank goodness.
Carmina goes to Elisa’s room and starts rifling the drawers looking for The Letter.
The full moon rises in La Ermita as Horacio closes up shop. Braulio intercepts him to ask about repayment on his loan. Horacio explains his little business deal didn’t turn out as planned but he’ll get Brau’s cash to him soon. Lolita wanders up and asks what money are they discussing? Horacio admits that Braulio floated him a loan when Alfonsina fired him. Lolita thanks Brau and says they will repay every cent because neither she nor her husband want to owe him anything. Brau sheepishly departs so he doesn’t have to hear Horacio get scolded for lying about where he got the money.
Dam Trapped and Flor arrive at Harangue-O and tell a thrilled Alfonsina they are getting married right away. Fina can’t wait to get the master bedroom ready for them! (There she goes again, creeping us out.) Dam tells her not to bother, right after the wedding they are heading back to Mexico City. Fina’s not happy. The hacienda is plenty big and it is his inheritance. He has responsibilities to the Procesadora. How can he leave right now while it is in crisis? Dam says he doesn’t want to live in La Ermita or the hacienda. Nor does he intend to live with his mother and wife under the same roof. Dam Straight tells them they both understand his situation perfectly and if they expect the marriage to work he has to be far from La Ermita and Elisa. End of discussion.Flor doesn’t even try to hide her smirk. Any bets on how long it will take Fina to wipe it off her face?
Elisa gets home and hears the cacophony upstairs. She finds Carmina trashing her room. “Don’t touch my things! You’re loca!” Elisa pushes Carmina and the OrangeHo goes into a rabid frenzy, accusing Elisa and her damn mother of causing all the unhappiness and shame she has ever known. “You’re loca!” shrieks Elisa, over and over. Carmina keeps searching, throwing and blaming. She finds The Amulet and pulls it apart. She finds the picture of Stef and Blanca and starts to crumple it. Elisa manages to pull it away just as Lolita the Lioness shows up. Whew!
Lolita chases Carmina out of the room. Elisa cries that Carmina is truly crazy. “God help me,” wails Elisa, “but I hate her with all my heart. I hate her I hate her!” That’s OK honey, we do too.
The Flaming Hot Cheet-Ho literally throws her clothes and Stef’s jewelry into a suitcase while the crazy violin music plays.
Furious Fina finds Flor fawning over her reflection. She instructs Flor to convince Dam Independent to give up his absurd idea of moving to the DF. Flor shrugs, Fina should know she can’t do anything once Dam makes up his mind. Fina says Flor is going to do what she says and pronto. She wants her grandbabies around her, get it? Flor says Fina can’t have it both ways; if she wants to marriage to proceed then they have to move to Mexico City and have their own place. A decision which Flor agrees with by the way. Fina concedes somewhat; she says she’ll buy them their own grand hacienda. Speaking of money, Flor asks what about the money she needs to pay the legal fees for daddy? Fina says they have to wait for the Proce to be profitable again. Flor doesn’t understand how Fina can offer to buy a grand hacienda but not have enough money for legal fees. Fine, says Fina, she’ll get the money to Flor. But, (again with the belly flick) Flor had better start showing soon.
Carmina zips up her suitcase and hears a noise outside her door. “Elisa? What do you want? Go away and let me pack in peace!” It’s creepy DonA standing outside the door, but when she opens it he’s gone. She finishes packing as Augusto stumbles into his office. He recalls a conversation he had long ago at “his” child’s grave site. Gabino, astride his tall horse, informs grieving Augusto with uncracked glasses that maybe he wouldn’t be so sad if he knew the child wasn’t his. Augusto’s little cogs and sprockets are spinning now.
Avances: Ingrid tells Augusto that Carmina and Rosendo were lovers. Remember when the camera lingered on Augusto’s rifle? Crazy eyes gets a hold of it and aims it wildly at Elisa and Augusto.
Labels: abismo
Why must Flor and Dam get married right away?
Who is the love of Gab's life?
Once again, just who will sleep the big sleep in that hole in front of the Blue House of Shame?
Thanks, amiga, for a great recap. Wonderful work, and so quick too.
EJ
If Gabino really wants to dump Ingrid for Carmina then Ingrid is in danger. Also, with Carmina waving that rifle at Elisa and Augusto...well I don't want to conjecture, but I think we can guess how that scenario will play out.
I want to thank all of the recappers for their detailed, well written, and oh so wtty recaps. I do not know what I would have done without all of you.
Thank you, thank you, thank you.
"Back at the chapel of cheerlessness"
"Hey! Boobies!" (Also thanks Sara)
"I can’t take my eyes off The Zone" -- I am profoundly grateful for this section of your recap because I was spellbound with just where that belt-buckle was sitting. I've not liked a lot of the costuming in this TN, but that outfit, or lack thereof, was just fine. ( Has anyone revived Cynderella yet?) I too think, lord help him, Carmina is his main crush. Blech.
And for the first time in many an episode, I was actually cheering Dam on as he lowered on Mama that he ain't staying in her stinking hacienda or town after hitching with the 3 inch Wedgie Queen. The look on her face, everything below the forehead, was priceless!!! Want any bets that she buys the very property that Gab has his sites set on for D/F??
Tonia- shut up. Vicente-go away. Take your mother with you.
II hasn't changed. I'm sorry but she may be going thru her major guilt-trip over Kenia, but her reaction to the money Gael gave her was well, irritating. I agree that I think Gab may be tiring of the shrew. And so am I.
So I'm thinking Padre tells Dam, he goes running to Elisa all "I lurrvvv you", but just then Flo will lower the boom about the oncoming fake baby. I watch too many of these TN's.And then we get waterworks from both Stoopid and Weepsa #1. Hope there's a ballgame that night to check in on.
The way Asshat acted last night, his usual self with how he treated the Doc made me want to pull the trigger of that rifle myself-- he also looked weirdly ashen/woodeny last night in close-ups. Hmmmm...the look of a soon to be dead man? I can't see Guppy offing Asshat with Elisa standing there. But who knows...
great recap, again...
loved the description of Carmina and Gabino's scene... yes i was able to see he was looking indeed very hot, pangs down as far as Mark T had them at the People picture...
and now i definitely know Gabino has the hots for Carmina and has had her targetted for a long time, probably since before Rosie died.
remember he was sliming all over Carmina... he has promised her several times someday he will have more than Rosie ever had...
and now he tells Chente that he is buying the hacienda bigger and nicer than Alfonsina's so he can have the woman he has desired all his life (I am sure it is Carmina).
btw, yes 'tomar el papel de' is to take the role of.. good guess.
LOVE Quique lately...
poor Inmundo, he needs to get a security guy there, besides Paloma. she can't stop anyone from stomping in his office... maybe he needs to hire a Horacio. maybe Horacio will make more money there as security than at the butcher shop.
shucks, i forgot the chee-tos and carrots in the list of things in Carmina's suitcase...
and yes, i am taking a rest from swinging the skillet at AssGusto, but not sure what he intended to do by hiding when Carmina heard noise out the door...
GOOD THING Padre Loopy is not willing to go with Elisa's plan to keep the truth away from Dam (btw, LOVED the Dam Trapped nickname), even though he still might.
my fav, besides the title, is still your depiction of the gravehole scene with Gab and Carm:
...
Triple darn. It worked. Gabino decides to slime her instead of shooting her. He says if she’s been dumped then why doesn’t she hang with him? (Blech, really?) Screw his lover. (!?!) He sadistically smooches her and says he’s got tons of dough. He’s going to buy Cielo Abierto and have a much bigger penis, errrr, ranch than Rosendo Arango.... Dude, you disappointed me. What are you going to with that hole? Plant carrots? You missed your chance to plant the big one.
"She’s such a liar; she’s going to be whining about this for weeks." is my favorite line because it is sooo true. The good news about all the crying scenes is that I FFWD--> thru them and get done watchng that much faster.
Personally, I think Estef should have let Ros and Carmina run off together. They deserved each other.
"I can’t take my eyes off The Zone" Gabino's belt buckle was particularly distracting in the grave pit scene with Carmina. Gun? What gun? I kept wondering if he had a Brazilian wax job done for that scene. (ouch) Only one thing was holding up those pants, it was not the belt or the buckle (well, maybe the buckle) and he didn't lack much in exposing IT. Seriously.
I was sitting at the "How is our Cynderella holding up during this scene?" table.
I wondered if that gun was loaded. The night before, Gab pulled the trigger when he held it to Carmina's head, and it was empty. (or did I dream that?)
I. cannot. stand. Ingrid's. hairstyle. And I despise her for the reaction over the money Gael gave her. Off with her curls!
Daisynjay,
ITA on your reaction to II's reaction to the money Gael gave her. that seals her fate in my book. poor Gael.. no family to two relatives to no family again... sigh.
also agree on your take of what will happen with Dam/Elisa/Flo (3 inch wedgie? LOL!!) and the fake baby... i too have seen too many novelas to not see that comin'.
yes, sylvia et al... 'the zone' in the grave hole scene was indeed distracting... i hope Cynderella survives the night and recovers ...
and yes, loved Dam standing off his mother on the 'i gotta put distance between myself, la Ermita and Elisa'... but like you, i doubt it will stand long.. Flo still has not really learned the power of her future mom in law yet... she keeps hoping against hope that Dam can stand up to her and stick to his guns... but Dam Stoopid is not there yet.
I wondered if that gun was loaded. The night before, Gab pulled the trigger when he held it to Carmina's head, and it was empty. (or did I dream that?)
i could swear i heard that too at the end of wed nights ep so maybe i was the one that confused you by writing about it. maybe i 'dreamed' it happened.. lol
good one about 'what is holding the pants up if not the buckle'.
so we all are on same page about guessing who won't make it very far now...
my guesses are... in order of shortest time left in the novela..
1. AssGusto
2. II
3. Tonia
4. Chente ... (ok we can wish he will just dissappear)
We have pretty much forgot about Guido... so who will help him get out of the dog house?... Maru is convinced he is behind the desfalco, so not her... Lucio? probably not... Quique?... maybe... II? would she if she found herself betrayed by Gabino?
Good work on this one, Sylvia.
I agree that Alfonsina is getting creepier all the time. She has no boundaries. If somebody doesn't do her in before this is over Damian will be needing Viagra long before he's 40 let alone 50.
Elisa needs to make a decision. Get over Damian or tell him the truth. Or maybe she's just tired of having to fight Ms Clingwrap. Ay, Dios mio, Elisa! Sell your lands, pack up your boobs, and head for D.F. to find a guy whose package deal doesn't include a creepy mother.
Gabino was breathtaking last night. And like everybody else I was wondering how Cynderella was handling the camera time on the Treasure Trail.
Marta quoted my other favorite line:
"What were you going to do with that hole? Plant carrots? You missed your chance to plant the big one.
However, once I got my mind off Gabino's fine assets, I was gobsmacked last night by the realization that this story is not about romance at all.
It's about the tragic longing..yearning...of these children abandoned by their parents.
Think about it. Elisa is willing to renounce marriage in the hopes of reconciling with her father. And her longing for her mother Estefania is palpable in every scene also.
Paloma dreams of having her "real father" return to town one day and sweep her up in his arms, cradle and spoil her as his princess.
Gael grieves for the family he never had. His unknown father, the death of his sister..... and gives what little money he has to his despicable grifter-mother, simply because she asked for it.
Vicente follows around Gabino like a lost whipped puppy, begging for him to reassure him that he is indeed his real father and will share his life with him.
I know that some therapists believe we marry people who either seem like the ideal parent we had, or the ideal parent we wish we had...and of course one is always disappointed!
But it's so clear, in this story at least, that the real crux of the longing and yearning, is for an actual parent. The main characters and some of the minor ones, are all orphans or emotional orphans, longing for that primordial parental connection. And not finding it.
Sylvia..as usual your writing sparkled with wit and sly sexy humor. Much fun to relive last night with your romp of a recap.
It's about the tragic longing..yearning...of these children abandoned by their parents."
JudyB - Bingo! You hit the nail on the head. Spot on. Go to the head of the class and collect $200 when you pass GO.
Tomar papeles usually means to take a position about something, or get involved in it. Begoña's criticizing Quique is silly. But, then, she is a silly character. He hit the nail on the head when he told her she needed professional help to boost her self-esteem and to stop the gossip. He is my favorite character.
Damian is so lame. I don't know how he is going to extract himself from this one. But, he might be the one who figures out how the money was embezzled from the procesadora.
Gabino seems to be going over the edge. He declared himself to Carmina (and wants to try her out), and he showed Chente the widow's hacienda that he wants to buy. He's also bragging that he has more money than anyone thinks. Also, Ingrid is a big threat and a dangerous woman - more so now than before.
"He’s going to buy Cielo Abierto and have a much bigger penis, errrr, ranch than Rosendo Arango. Who cares what he says next because he decides to do a 360 and show off his bodacious bod. Where was I? Too bad, that stupid bandana hand was a buzz kill" were but a few of my favorite lines.
Augusto has had a lot of shocking information to assimilate. Despite many unattractive qualities, I don't believe stupidity is one of them. The truth is out there - now go find and accept it.
I feel I am alone in feeling Gabino has absolutely no charm, allure or carisma. When he physically attacks/molests anyone (Ingrid, Carmina), those small, nibbling kisses turn my stomach.
Sylvia, while you make an excellent case for Carmina being the object of Gabino's desires, I have always thought it may be Fina. Icy and unattainable. Having Fina, money and power would give him everything Rosendo has. Isn't that what he has wanted all along?
The Tonia/Braulio/Vincente situation is so sad. I keep wondering what will become of them. Such deceit, turmoil, distrust and anger.
Judy, I loved your insight on the heart of this novela: "the real crux of the longing and yearning, is for an actual parent. The main characters and some of the minor ones, are all orphans or emotional orphans, longing for that primordial parental connection. And not finding it." Beautifully stated.
Doris: "She could not recognize a normal guy - or relationship - if she ran smack into it. She doesn't even know how to dress properly" had me laughing out loud.
Wonderful comments all.
Happy Friday.
Diana
If Gabino and Carmina were to marry and have a child, it would be the biggest green eyed monster in the world. Both have built their entire lives on envy, Gabino of Rosendo and Carmina of Estefania. In a way you have to respect their honesty, they don't bother to hide anything, in one way or the other, they communicate, " I want what Rosendo/Stefe had!" every day of the week.
Like Sylvia says, "Hey, that’s not fair. Doc shouldn’t be divulging info about patients." Dr. Tovar is so funny, Augusto asks him if his wife was already pregnant when they married and he answers, Yes! And I am requested not to use my phone in the hospital waiting room because of "Hippa Rules!"
Are we seeing plugs in Gabino's hair? I may not get an answer here, I'm probably the only one looking at his scalp during his scenes.
Carlos, hope you and Linda are high and dry, Houston's floods made the news last night!
As to the longing for a proper parent, the unfortunate truth is that when you get to this age it becomes necessary to reparent yourself to normal. It's not easy, but it is possible.
In agreement with Doris, Diana and UA on Gabino, but I enjoy the energy that others bring to the discussion!!!!
Judy, beautiful comments on our novela....loved every word!
I would say we'd let you collect Gabino instead, but I think Cynderella may be standing there like that little jailer guy on the game board who holds the club. Be careful.
Doris - what's really holding up that belt buckle!! Oh, lord. There was that moment when he spread out his arms and his stomach sucked in slightly and I thought, "Oh Heavens, that belt better hold". I would say or not, but if it hadn't, stupid Univision censors might have deleted out the entire scene and we would have been sorely deprived of "the Night of the Zone" (another brilliant notation Judy. You're on fire today!)
The more I think about these telenovelas (I know, get a life!) the more I think that they are just extended PSA's for better parenting.
Think about the target audience. Surely it is people of parental age. These are not kiddie shows.
And the message is always the tragedy of abandonment, emotional or physical, and the suffering that it brings.
In short, these are sexy exhortations to really love and understand these children that we bring into the world, however carelessly.
Whether the abuse is subtle (disinterest, sarcasm, dismissal) or savage (just read the metro section of your daily newspaper), we are reminded that one of the worst sins we can commit is to abandon our children, or manipulate them for our own selfish needs and wants.
A heavy duty message, but salted with bodacious women and gorgeous men so we'll go on watching, and hopefully go on listening....and learning.
The abuse and neglect is these stories is dramatic, but I still think it's a good reminder that we ourselves can fall short in subtler ways in our parenting.
Lord knows, I think being a good mom or grandmom is a lot harder than being a good French prof, good reporter or good fitness instructor.
Diana- I also thought that Alfie is the likely candidate for the woman Gab has always wanted at his feet. I think he lusts after everything Rosendo had, including his women. But there are levels for the women. Ing is at the bottom of the scale. Rosendo boinked her and impreganted her, but it's obvious she was never important to him. I think Gab is starting to tire of her. Carmina, the sex pot that had Rosendo wrapped around her orange finger is higher up on the scale, and he would happily dump Ing to have her. But Alfie, Rosendo's senora, is the holy grail. The top of the scale. The impossible dream. Once he becomes the rich Don that he fancies himself, he will be at the level of Alfi. Carmina is blue house level. Alfi is palacial hacienda level.
I could just picture you on the Patio, singing your title, country style – with maybe a little bluegrassy twang:
♪♪Ah de-siiiiire you but yer mah broooo-ther♪♪
♪♪Even if yer not, yer marryin’ a-nooooo-ther♪♪
Dam. Double dam. Triple dam. “Dude, you disappointed me. What are you going to with that hole? Plant carrots? You missed your chance to plant the big one”... “It’s all arranged. Flor is ecSTATIC.” ... “Flor clings. Elisa stares. Dam stares back. Elisa stares back back. Enough already.”
Haw. No disappointment from you, dude.
And you nailed the Ingrid-Gael scene. She lost all her moral capital right then and there when she treated Gael’s offering with scorn. What a mother ...
Thank you, thank you, thank you. You are a champ!
Here’s why I think Ingrid, rather than Augusto, may be the next one to go:
a. The only money Gabino can put his paws on right now is Ingrid’s. The only way he can spend it on a hacienda for him and Orangina is over Ingrid’s dead body.
b. If the Orange Slush shoots Augusto, won’t she be locked up? But if Gab offs Ingrid who will even notice?
Other stuff:
Alfie thinks Gabino is buying Cielo Abierto as her agent and has no intention of letting him actually keep the land. He thinks otherwise. How will they work out this little misunderstanding? Well, I’m sure they’ll be civil about it. Not.
What a nasty piece of work that Elisa is. If she doesn’t tell Dam they aren’t brother and sister, he can’t make an informed choice – which might well be to go ahead and marry Florencia anyway. So she sets him up to learn the truth after he is Landucci-locked and she gets to play the poor little victim.
Gabino and Carmina have been dressing alike for several weeks. I’m waiting for her pony-tail – or for him to let his hair down.
JudyB – what an astute analysis of all these bereft, overgrown children longing for their lost parents. Perfect! “Lord knows, I think being a good mom or grandmom is a lot harder than being a good French prof, good reporter or good fitness instructor”.
Amen to that.
Carmina doesn't see Gabino, or any of her other men, as an ATM.
I have a mental image of multiple faintings on the patio and poor Carlos running around with smelling salts. Oh my I am looking forward to The Zone. I got hot and bothered just reading the recap and the comments.
I think Gab's holy grail of women is Fina.
NovelaMaven- excellent point about Elisa. Dam needs to know all the facts. She is a victim of her own stupidity and she needs to stop whining. It's her fault and no one else's.
Such great comments all around today!
And yes, add Kenia to the group of sad and abused orphans in this story.
In spite of the off-putting and annoying Main Couples, this telenovela is certainly giving us all a lot to talk about!
[Wah ... I miss you already and you ain't even done gone.]
I think the woman Gab always wanted is Alfonsina.
Sylvia I'll miss you while you're taking a break. Thanks for another stellar recap. Hope you'll still b e around for commenting. (And NM, I'm looking forward to more from you!)
So much funny stuff has already been mentioned. My favorite line:
"...I hate her I hate her!” That’s OK honey, we do too.
As for Gabino's dream woman, I tend to agree with Diana that it is Alfonsina. He is utterly obsessed with her.
Sandy and Doris, I don't think that Gabino actually pulled the trigger. I think instead what you heard was him cocking the pistol.
Will someone please tell Damián that Elisa is not his sister?
Sandy, we were flooded in yesterday but we didn't flood. Our community got more than 10 inches of rain yesterday morning.
Carlos
Alfie definitely is The Coveted Prize for Gabino. She has money and the power it brings with it. She would be quite the coup and he would feel like king of the mountain, or at least Alpha dog.
totally agree on your astute analysis of all these bereft, overgrown children longing for their lost parents and also agree on adding Kenya to the list.
and while we are at it, we need to make another list for the parents struggling to figure out the 'how to' parenting.
take a look at II, non-deserving of even calling herself MOTHER.
then Alfie shipping her son away across the world only to keep him away from the girl he likes/loves.
then Tonia, even schemming and lying to get a 'father' to her son knowing the real father was not the model image of a parent at all. but while at it she destroyed four lives (herself, her son's, Lolita and Brau).
AssGusto, well lets not get started there...
i believe the only 'parent' figure we can admire here is either a grandparent or was never a parent at all (Ramona and Lucio) with some honor mentioning of Inmundo, even with the 'affair' stain in his resume, as a parent he is good enough.
the other parents that would take medals died together many years ago (Rosie and Stefie).
Carmina as a mother? YIKES! good thing that baby did not survive looking at it from that angle.
He was an AFFECTIONATE father. But he failed to protect his child...first of all by spawning other children (Gael and who knows who else?) and by running off with his mistress.
Estefania was trying to protect Damian; but not Rosendo. And she paid the ultimate price.
Hmmm, have we covered the possibility that he fathered Paloma? I know I am sure Gab is her bio dad, but is there a chance that it could be Rosie? Maybe I just be crazy...but that could be why Ramona (I always think Puddleglum from that old BBC production of Narnia when I see her in that hat! Lol! You may have to google it if you all haven't seen it!) insists that her and Gael will never be a pair. Oh wait, she doesn't know Gael is Rosendo's son, does she? So scratch that idea, I guess...
doris, "off with her curls", brilliant. Thank you.
marta, I agree with Pasofino that Dam might be the one who eventually helps Guido. He has never believed Guido stole the money.
JudyB, I think you are right about the overriding theme of this story. You state it beautifully. Of all the young people in this novela, only the Tovar kids have their original parents (as far as we know).
Pasofino, thank you for clarifying tomar papeles.
Diana, Sara and Vivi, thank you for suggesting that Fina might be Gabino's object of desire. She was my second choice. Who knows with him? He is wickedly dangerous as many of you so astutely observe.
Sandy, yes I think Gabino might have plugs. When his hair is wet or slicked back it looks like it.
I have to say that the comments today are amazing and thoughtful.
Novela Maven, I've got my ukulele and a cold cerveza and I'm definitely singing the song. You know me too well. After reading your next victim analysis I don't expect to see Ingrid or her curls much longer. Works for me.
I see we can add Kathleen and Carlos to the table who think Fina is Gabino's ultimate goal.
By the way Carlos, I'm glad to hear your feet are still dry. Barely.
Marta, can we add Padre Lupe to the list of good non-parents?
Kathleen, like you, I stopped watching Maid but might drop by for the finale.
So the Tovars, flawed but basically well-meaning, Padre Lupe and our sainted Estefania.
Ramona, we can assume, was a pretty good parent also, but unable to save her daughter from the lure of bad boy Gabino, nor the consequences of that ill-fated choice.(By the way, who was Ramona's mate?) Redeeming herself by doing a pretty good job of raising granddaughter Paloma.
And "pretty good" is not a put-down. Most of us, well, me at least, would be quite happy if our children considered us pretty good parents.
Wow that opens up so many possibilities hadn't thought about before. So maybe we should prepare the patio for a wake for our man of the broken lens.
I’ve always loved Eric del Castillo. Dõn Lucio is such a great role for him, and while he’s most likely happy to have it, he is playing the guy at the town “safe” house. If the beautiful young girls are at Lucio’s, they are fine, parents need not worry, spend the night there, fine! I think you have to be a certain age to command the “safe” look. Gael can’t possibly do the “safe” role! Eric must want to look at the camera, a la Woody Allen and say......”Folks, I’m playing this safe old geezer, but really, I’m not dead yet.”
Plus just finished reading an article in Newsweek about the dangers of internet and iPhone addiction (and they don't even know about telenovela addiction!) so this is absolutely the last time I'm checking in on the blog line. For today anyway.
Absolutely! Really. I mean it. Not kidding. By golly this is the last time. Today anyway. Now off to the nursing home.
In the future, I will squint my eyes or peek between my fingers when either Gabino or Dam Fine come on. I'd appreciate it if you all would do the same.
And as for Judy B, UA and other visually impaired people. If you don't have anything nice to say about poor misunderstood Gabby, please don't say anything at all. It hurts my feelings. And further more, good for you for noticing his personality! That's all I ask. Judge Gabby on the content of his character and not what he looks like or the size of his belt buckle.
Gabino is cray cray for Carmina.
Toña is desperate to hide Chente's paternity.
Lolita learned Braulio gave Horacio the money to open up the butcher shop.
Flor learned she better start showing soon.
Augusto learned Carmina was knocked up before he married her and Steffy was trying to stop her and Rosendo.
I learned Enrique is the smartest person on the show besides Lucio.
Gab scenes last night.
UA, do you know which site is infected?
Did one of you guys write this? I can tell by the nicknames and writing style that someone over here wrote this. I found this on another site. What I'm saying is that I think someone is posting are very important observations somewhere else.
Hopefully I will have plenty of opportunities to be able to work on this endeavor :) It may take imbibing in numerous daiquiris or glasses of wine to dull the senses slightly, but, dang, I'm willing to give it a try.
Cyderella - ROFLOL!!! We did not mean to offend your senses in our rapturous comments about your favorite character.
BTW, Cyn, I did a McAfee "secure search" on that telenovelasonline link and got a warning from McAfee. I'm not sure I even want to visit it and see what someone has most likely copied & pasted from CarayCaray.
Love you guys, have a great weekend and I'll check in later.
Plagiarism may be the sincerest form of flattery, but it annoys me just the same.
I recognize the Alf makes me ralph from a recapper from CME using it back then because I thought it was funny and told Audrey she should use a phrase like that on the LQNPA recap when Sin repeatedly pleads with Gus. So whoever is recapping there is definitely reading here first.
