Por ella soy Eva #39 9/10/12: Turning Up the Heat!

Antonia, hanging with Juan in Acapulco, wants to give her her house keys. You know, because she trusts her so much.

Plutarco he shows up at Helena's place with his greasy hair and leather jacket to tell her about his desperate situation with his marriage to Antonia. He acts all broken-up, presumably looking to get some sympathy points with Eva. Then they go to her dad's house to get Lalito back. Pluto has worked out some weird arrangement with Helena's dad whereby Helena gets to take Lalito if the two of them will live with Pluto and Antonia. I don't really get it. They retrieve the boy and go out to eat.

Heckel and Jekyll (Santi and Fernando) are at the pool, barking at girls in bikinis. They want to have some fun w/ these bonboncitas! Eva pops in to keep them honest... Antonia is there too, and the jerks make fun of her, so Eva and Antonia  really crank the screws and turn up the pressure on them for being jerks. Eva makes a speech about the grace of the feminine form in all its shapes and sizes and throws them both in the pool.

Meanwhile, Marcela, Fernando's overworked wife, assures her daughter that her husband would never cheat, but deep-down she's not so sure.

Pathetic and gross old Adriano is getting desperate, calling his underage girlfriend (who is eating ice cream)  and begging for her attention: "Yo estoy loco por ti!" Nothing interesting happens with those two this episode.

At the pool, Eva admires Antonia's aquamarine choir-gown, they talk about true beauty being within, and then she tears off the robe and dives into the water in a swimsuit! Eva awkwardly declines to hop in with her and scuttles off to confer with Mimi by phone about possibly faking it in a swimsuit.

Rebeca, Pluto's bimbo is eating cherries and wondering why he is so late. Fortunately, the waitress serving Pluto, Helena, and Lalito is an informant for Rebeca, and lets her know that her Cachito is eating out with another lady and some squirt! Predictably, Rebe flips out again... "That vile scorpion Helena... How dare she steal "my" man?"

Jeez, EVERYONE is in Acapulco! Paty baby is here too!

OMG THE JIG IS UP! Antonia walks in on Juan in a state of disarray (as he struggles to think of a way to hide his leg hair and get in the pool) and immediately recognizes him! Poor girl, she thinks this is all some cruel trick. In all the time Juan spends saying "let me explain" he probably could have summed it up. Anyway, she lets him explain and he tells her it was all for love of Helena, but he still likes her a lot as a friend. Poor Antonia feels like she was used. Juan looks suitably remorseful and attentive to her distress. THEN he hits her with another blow: accusing her husband of the fraud and asking her to help him find proof of Pluto's villainy. She begs time to think and process.

Marcela is at home continuing a sweet conversation with her daughter about whether to choose career, family, or do both. The girl seems to have a good idea of the qualities that make her dad such a jerk (though Marcela insist her husband exhibits none), and the girl seems to be listening to her mom's advice much more closely than any real teenager would.

Pluto yells at a portrait of his wife and smashes it - He says he was only playing games before, but now he's serious about bumping her off - he wants to be the widower who conquers Helena.

Alone in her hotel room, Antonia thinks back on all the times Juan/Eva was sweet to her. Including the time that I must have missed that Antonia tried to commit suicide with Vitamins and Juan talked her down! I think this is the leadup to her realizing that Juan really has changed.

Anyway, here are the advances:
Tomorrow: Antonia will catch her husband getting nasty with Rebeca! Yay!

Thank you, thank you Ezra. What a great episode. "In all the time Juan spends saying "let me explain" he probably could have summed it up." Yep, typical telenovela gimmick. It drives me crazy.

Note to self: If I ever try to live a telenovela lie in real life, I'll write out the explanation and carry it around with me for moments like this so I don't end up stammering till the commercial break.

I'm not getting my hopes up about Antonia catching Pluto with Rebeca, though, no matter how convincing it looked in the avances. There was another time we thought she'd catch them together on his desk and it was a false alarm. :( It just seems like it would be too soon and too convenient and too awesome for her to catch him at this moment.

Ezra, thanks for the great recap. I really liked that Juan was trying to explain himself to Antonia and later she thought about all Eva had done for her. I really wonder what Antonia is going to do. I am really hoping Antonia catches Pluto and Rebeca, but I think Julie is right about that. The advances are never what they seem.

So Santi finally recognized Lucia. Lol. That was too funny. Loved Eva throwing Fernando and Santi in the pool. I like how she made Fernando apologize to Antonia. I wonder if the only reason Fernando apologized to Antonia was he was afraid she could fire him?

Hated how the Bastardo will only let Lalito leave the house if Pluto goes with them. What is wrong with the Bastardo and that smarmy smile on his face when they left. That Bastardo has got to go.

I wonder what Angelica's motive was for calling Rebeca? That was interesting. I guess she likes to cause trouble.

Fernando and Santi barking like dogs, they are a pair of dogs. They think they are just the bees knees I guess, lol.

Thanks for the rapid recap, Ezra. You are so right about that explanation that almost never was. -- Loved the idea of carrying your written explanation around instead of spending half of an episode saying -let me explain.

Strange reaction that Eduardo has to Plutarco. I won't let my daughter take Lalito to the movies -- but if you & your wife go with her I trust you completely. Of course he never asks where the wife is....

Lots of fun around the pool -- the barking buddies, the encounter between Santi & Lucia, Eva knocking the boys in the pool, Antonia throwing off her cover up & jumping in.

So -- how will Antonia react after she thinks things over? And will she really walk in on Pluto & Rebecca? Can't wait to find out tomorrow.

Will there be a show tomorrow? I see the soccer game starts at 8:30 Pacific. Anybody know?

Thank you, Ezra, for the recap.

Zap2it shows Por Ella beginning at 7:00 pm Tue. evening and running until 8:30, when soccer starts.

Ezra, thanks for the excellent recap and for posting it so quickly. I'm sure Antonia will keep Eva's secret. Our show would be almost over if she doesn't. I do hope she'll become more watchful of Pluto, even if she doesn't actually catch him with Rebecca.
Always lots of action in this show, not much useless spinning.

La Paloma

Yes Paloma, the plot just keeps hurtling along. That's one of the things I love about this show.

Call me crazy, but I really think Toni does walk in on Pluto & Rebecca. You see her in the doorway in the background and naked bodies in the foreground. Unless the maid is making out with the gardener in the master bedroom, I can't see any way around it. Where will the plot go with this twist? Who can know?

Finally, FINALLY, Helena put her foot down and told Pluto to stop visiting her without Antonia along. It's about time! I suspect that no "decent" single woman in Mexico would invite a married man into her apartment when no one else is home.

In other news... Camil tweeted today, that the Sept. 4 Mexico broadcast of Eva had a 45.7% market share. That is the third highest ever since IBOPE started keeping records, for any novela in that time slot. Not bad, huh? And I'll bet the finale gets a bigger share. #2 was Nunca Te Olvidaré in 1999 (45.8%). And I'm sure you can guess what was #1, with 48% market share.

This is an excellent series and I suspect it's going to be longer than it was planned to be originally. It looks like comedies are easier to extend than dramas.

I want Antonia to catch Plutarco in the act, but it seems too early for that.

Gracias, Ezra. I was afraid they'd leave Antonia discovering JC until the end, and I was happy to see it happen midway. I think novelas differ in this way from American soaps which almost always sacrifice pacing for the cliffhanger. Novelas seem to move faster (the joke being from people that don't watch soaps that you can tune in weeks later and the same thing is still going on).

I thought Camil did a wonderful job (still half looking like Eva) of portraying sincere in telling Antonia he is genuinely her friend. I found the scene very moving as she struggled not to feel like she'd been made a fool of, and he worried not just for himself but for her as well. They were both great.

I too suspect the avance with Toni, Pluto, and Rebeca is real. They showed Rebeca smirking in bed. This would convince Toni to continue to work with Eva, although I would rather see her come to this conclusion based on her relationship with Eva rather than from anger at the Putz.

Thank you, La Paloma, for the heads up about the time switch. I still don't get why Univision thinks this kind of thing is OK unless you have it tuned in all day long. And Paula, since I'm new to telenovelas I can't guess # 1. Is there a show that outperformed all others?

The promos last night gave previews for Wednesday - as if there is no show tonight - but the show is still listed on the Zap2it site. I'll be out this evening so I guess I'll set the VCR just in case.

Güera

On my cable system it is listed as 7:00pm to 8:30pm Eastern time tonight. Then the soccer game.

Great recap Ezra, and great episode too! Loved the scenes between JC and Toni. Great acting by both actors. Toni has a LOT to process, and it looks like next episode she'll have even more. Those previews looked like the real deal to me. Hmmm...

My cable shows Eva being on tonight for 1 1/2 hours-- the only tn on tonight. We'll have to wait and see.

Thank you Ezra. I think Toni feels also that she has lost her best friend. Juan's assurance that he is still her friend shows he does not yet see that girl to girl is not the same as man/woman friendship.

Old Ed, for whom I wish a successful death bed scene, seems uncomfortably on point. I can remember news reports of fathers and husbands that control their woman by taking away the children. Seems to be a method for keeping the woman powerless and shackled to them as master. Ed might be indicating it is okay for Pluto to USE Helena, for the job or anything else. But make her know that you are the boss and you and I are in this together.

Bonney- Great theory about Bastardo. I also wondered if maybe he's encouraging Helena to go out with Pluto so that he can use it in his custody case as proof that his daughter is whoring around with married men and exposing his grandson to these men.

I just checked Uni's site. For Pacific time, it has Eva from 9-10:30, and soccer 5:30-8. About the 90-minute show - I noticed that last night, when Toni walked in on Juan, the scene froze, like they always do at the end of a cap. So from the reveal forward, that was probably the first half of Mexico's #39. Tonight we'll see the 2nd half of #39, and all of #40.

The show wrapped up shooting in late July, and it's in its final weeks in Mexico. I believe it'll be a total of 155 caps, ending Sept 21. I'm surprised they didn't extend it, considering the ratings. I wouldn't be surprised if Camil had a no-extensions requirement in his contract, especially considering past experience. He's already shooting a new movie, which means that several months ago he knew with certainty when he'd be available.

I wouldn't put anything past Bastardo, but it's comforting to know that he can have a fatal heart attack at any moment.

On the other hand, Pluto unfortunately seems quite healthy. I find him far too cold-blooded a villain for a comedy, so I'm really hoping he gets squashed by an anvil. (Or perhaps the Monty Python Foot since this is a comedy.)

I still feel like it's too early for Antonia to catch Pluto, though you all are making a very convincing case for it. It's just, if she finds out he's a bad guy then what are we going to do for the next couple of months? Is it really going to be that difficult for her and Eva to get the rest of the goods on him? Or is he somehow going to convince her that he's an honest man??

Good info, Paula. Since I'm not a fan of extensions, I'm okay with that, even if it means we're done sooner.

I really am enjoying the show, and I'll miss it when it's done. But I afraid it's going to make me even more impatient with bad TNs.

Julie, I've got it! Rebecca has Pluto shackled to the bed - I'd have no trouble believing that of her. So Pluto convinces Toni that she drugged him and imprisoned him there! Yeah, that must be it!

I'm afraid it's going to make me even more impatient with bad TNs. Welcome to my world.

Bill said, "since I'm new to telenovelas I can't guess # 1."

That would be "La fea más bella" in 2006-07, the record holder for market share in Mexico. Like Eva, it was based on a Colombian script, "Yo soy Betty la fea," perhaps the best TN script ever written. Also like Eva, it starred Jaime Camil.

Camil has been in a total of six TN's. The first two were before he really hit his stride. Of the four since then, two hold the record for being in the top three of market share for Mexico. Not too shabby for a guy whose father has to bribe producers to hire him! (Sarcasm.)

Ezra..loved your comment that Marcela's daughter listened to her mom in a way that NO ACTUAL TEENAGER EVER WOULD. How right you are, joven, how right you are.

Great recap, great episode. Looking forward to the show tonight as well as having a night off from recapping Refugio. Hooray!

I realize we're repeating ourselves all the time about Bastardo, but I am having immense difficulty believing that any man could hate his own daughter this much. We need to hear the backstory on this.

I second the Monty Python foot!

I agree, it does seem awfully early for Antonia to catch Pluto with Rebeca, but the way things raced along in this episode suggests that this show might not follow traditional novela pacing.

Thank you Ezra for this zippy recap!

PaulaH – you are a font of information! Do you know if this show has pieces chopped out for its U.S. showing? It’s seemed to me, particularly at the beginning, that the ends of some scenes were clipped off, and that other scenes were missing. And now, the big ciffhanger with Toni discovering Eva comes in the middle of a Monday show, instead of at the end of an episode as per usual. And I also think that this kind of cliffhanger would be at the end of a Friday show.

I’m still steamed about when they starting cutting 50% of Llena de Amor, to the point you couldn’t follow the story without watching it on the web to get the full episodes.

I’m thrilled about the great ratings – I’m loving this show. I think the fellow playing Adriano is wonderful, as is the lady playing Toni. And others – what a cast!

What number episode are we on now?

Ezra - thanks.

Even though I knew from the previews that Antonia would out JC, that scene still packed quite a wallop and had me screaming "Oh no!" Kudos to both actors.

That smirk on Rebecca's face makes me think Antonia really does catch Pluto in the act. But if so, it seems like a dumb move on Rebecca's part. How will she still be able to use both Pluto and Antonia?

Love Eva trying to strategize how she could wear a swimsuit with her manliness undetected. Too funny.

Maggie, tonight's show will be #40 by US #'s. It's #39B + #40-all by Mexico's #'s.

Do you know if this show has pieces chopped out for its U.S. showing?

All I know on that is from Camil's twitter. He watched an episode while he was staying in LA a few weeks ago, and he got frustrated because only a short way into the hour, they had already cut two scenes.

Oh, and one other thing I know they cut. Last week there was a scene with Pluto and Rebecca. His head dipped toward resting on her boobs but before it reached its destination, POOF!, his head was suddenly upright again. That happened least twice - it was funny.

Maggie - as for corresponding days of the week, Friday episodes, etc., that all goes out the window with Univision. Not necessarily because of cutting (though they obviously do cut and sometimes they do a really sloppy job!). It's because of pre-emptions (for soccer games, holiday specials, etc.). A show that aired on a Friday in Mexico might not air on Friday here because Uni doesn't necessarily pre-empt the same as in Mexico.

I have no idea whether there are more pre-emptions in Mexico or here, but in my 6 years of watching TNs I've seen many a Friday-type cliffhanger in the middle of the week.

Thank you big time PaulaH! I just knew things were missing. Like the other night when the patient goodwife, whose name I can’t recall, took JC’s mom by the arm to look for him at the office. You just know, since Eva was in the building at the same time, he/she would have spotted her, probably been sad, and ducked out of sight or maybe even interacted with her. Instead …nada.

And way back in the early days of the show, when Mimi made him up to look like an old man, we didn’t any close-ups of her handiwork. He and Mimi were tiny in the back row of the church.

Etc.

Why on earth they would chop up a show that has such good ratings is a mystery. Time for a viewer revolt!

Folks, I am just about livid over the timing of tonight's episode.

I won't spoil anything, but I will say that it's not the kind of episode that any network that respects its viewers would air at a weird time. A lot of people are going to miss this and they're not going to be happy.
