Por ella soy Eva #58 10/5/12: It's Déjà Vu All Over Again

It's double-shot night in Viewerville! Tonight we get two episodes and two unwanted declarations of love; a second mother is given a cell phone; and a second reluctant woman is taken on a dubious yacht ride in Acapulco.

Part 1: Iron My Shirts, Bastardo

Soooo... after ten minutes of rerun from yesterday, we resume our story. Adriano has just told Eva that he's hot for her. Eva chugs a couple of potent potables and staggers out of there in shock.

Mimi is singing karaoke at the bar. Adriano shows up. She tries to flirt with him, and he is so gracious with her that at first it looks as though he's planning to two-time his reluctantly beloved Eva. But no; he tells Mimi he wants to Talk. About Eva. Sure she's lanky and hairy and shaped like a potbelly stove, he says, but he loves her.

Angelica is scolded by her boss. Santi arrives and tells her that Paty dumped him. She wants to comfort him. They proceed to make out in the middle of the restaurant. He suggests that she go to Vegas with him, if it's okay with her boss. Angelica scoffs. She don't need no stinkin' permission!

JC and Mimi compare notes at home. They are both stunned and dismayed over the evening's developments. JC is really weirded out that Adriano, who is like his second father, has a thing for Eva. JC swears that Eva never did anything to encourage this, but Mimi is angry and disappointed.

Helena is up late, still wound up after the crazy day with the wedding. She wants to get a bigger apartment so Silvia can have her own room. Silvia wants to find a job. Helena surprises her with a cell phone for her very own.

Next day: Mimi's in a better mood. She knows it's not his fault Adriano prefers Eva. But JC is running out of enthusiasm for being Eva and is getting discouraged in his search for proof. Mimi encourages him to keep at it. He can't do anything as JC, a dead man; but as Eva he can do a lot.

After Helena puts Lalito on the bus to school, Pluto surprises her by showing up to drive her to work. Her place is on his way to the office anyway, and he wants her opinion on some furniture for the house. She tells him she's thinking of moving because Silvia's living there now. No, there's no chance Silvia will go back to Mad Dad, because things are very bad at home.

At home, Fernando is all bummed out over poor Santi's wedding. Marcela agrees that it's not exactly fair, but Santi kinda had it coming.

Eva arrives at GI to find a big floral arrangement from Adriano. She whines. Mimi asks how many women JC harassed. Ha! Adriano comes in full of compliments. Mimi tries to soak up some of the sweet talk, but he asks for a moment alone with Eva. "I dreamed about you last night," he tells Eva; and he's just getting warmed up. He's bummed that she left in such a hurry last night when he wanted to talk. She says she needs space; she's a respectable woman; Belisario was the love of her life and she's still mourning him. But Adriano is on fire for her. They're both alone, so why don't we try? He thinks maybe Antonia made Eva a partner so he could see that she's right for him. Eva says Toni wouldn't have done that to her! Adriano says she's driving him crazy with her perfectly-lined, meaty lips.

Next, Eva finds Pluto in the hallway with Helena, making lunch plans. She whines to Helena that she has time to eat with Pluti but never with her. Helena insists he's just a friend.

Renato is preparing the boardroom for a meeting when Pluto and Adriano come in. He is pleasant to them and hurries out right away. Pluti complains to Adriano that Renato's such a suckup. Adriano doesn't think so. Pluto wants to discuss - what else - the shares. "Again?" Adriano asks. Pluti says Adriano should retire, and they'll take care of the company. Adriano watches Eva come in with Helena and says no; something else is keeping him here. In fact, he suggests, perhaps Pluto should take a nice long vacation. Nope, Pluto replies; staring at Helena, he says that something is keeping him at GI too.

Silvia's job-hunting efforts aren't going well. The first guy she approaches for a sales position practically chases her away. Next, a store manager says that the owners don't want someone her age.

Silvia is despondent. Luckily, she has that cool new phone to cheer her up. So she calls Mad Dad. (How sad would you have to be if hearing his voice would actually improve your mood?)

He answers, but Silvia doesn't say anything. He suspects that it's her, but doesn't understand why she didn't say anything. (I can't tell if he's disappointed, or merely perplexed.)

At the meeting, Adriano and Pluto are both distracted. Helena wants developers to submit their proposals and bids for the Play Majagua project. She asks Rebeca to publish the requirements on their website and at the tourism commission. Rebeca makes catty remarks about how it's not really her job to do that, but okay, no problem. Helena meows back at her, hopefully this won't be like last time when you neglected to send the invitations for that event. Eva gently scolds the inattentive men as she hands out some reading material.

Later, Helena is talking about how they will make everything legal with Playa Majagua after they choose the winning developer and how fortunate it is that they have such a good relationship with the Playa people when suddenly the phone rings. It's the regidor from Playa Majagua and he's mad as anything because a bunch of developers are already there. He never agreed to this! Confused, Helena says she didn't arrange this. The regidor says he's going to stop negotiations. Oh noes! She insists this must be a misunderstanding. The regidor says there have been too many of those - like how they weren't invited to that company event. Helena promises to call off the construction companies and fix everything.

Rebeca gloats and conjectures that they may have to pay out millions to smooth things over. Pluto is more supportive. Adriano tells her to fix it.

Silvia is looking at flowers at a nursery or some kind of garden. She tells the friendly manager that her husband won't let her have a garden. She knows lots about plants, though, so hey, any chance she could have a job? The manager, whose name is Magdalena Hilt, says as a matter of fact yes, but she can't offer much in the way of a salary. That's okay with Silvia. She's willing to do anything, she'll work hard and she appreciates her trust.

Mad Dad's lawyer is visiting. Mad Dad complains that he hasn't heard from Silvia since she left. He could be dead for all she knows. The lawyer says that if it were him, he would have called her. "I wouldn't call that ingrate!" Mad Dad replies, and who needs her anyway? Lawyer says, you do need her. You can't be alone. Mad Dad admits that he needs her to wash and iron and cook and clean. Lawyer friend says you could get a maid to do that, but you need company! Call her and apologize. Mad Dad says he'd just as soon cut off his hand. I think that's a fine idea.

Meanwhile, in Las Vegas, Santi and Angelica are wicked drunk. I don't see how anything could possibly go wrong with that.

Part 2: Operation Honeymoon II - The Sequel

Helena has finished calling off all the developers, but is worried the damage has already been done - because they all said that the orders came from her to go there in the first place. Eva smacks Renato and tries to blame his unruly hair for the screwup. She sends him to get some coffees.

Adriano complains to Pluto (and Fernando, who squeezes uninvited into Adriano's office despite Pluto almost slamming the door on his body) about Helena screwing things up. Adri says she's competent enough, but she lacks the "masculine vigor" to manage the project. (Ugh, Adriano. You can iron my shirts too.) Pluto says that her assistant, being a man, will make up the difference. (Pluto and Renato, you're in luck because I just happen to have a second iron and board upstairs.)

Fern says he knew this would happen because women always crash and burn eventually. (I like extra starch, Ferni!) Pluto and Adri stare at him like the third wheel that he is until he finally excuses himself.

Rebeca gloats at a photo of herself (or maybe it's a mirror) about what a genius she is. Vero brings her some coffee, and Rebeca kicks her out. Then Onesimo shows up and she tries to get him to tell her what Pluto is up to. Onesimo plays dumb. She doesn't believe him, but sends him to do all of her personal errands.

Helena and Eva are still wondering who called the developers on Helena's behalf when Pluto shows up and tells Eva to scram.

Meanwhile, Onesimo has to sneak through the reception area to avoid being seen by Mimi. (There are more and more people he's going to have to avoid around the office!)

Pluto promises to help Helena however she needs. She says he has it under control and knows how to handle these things. He says maybe he delegated too much to her and it's too much. She is offended. He apologizes and tells her to take a few days off.

Mimi hustles Eva away from the door where she's been listening. Cindy comes along with a gift of truffles for Eva, from Adriano. (Eva wants to throw them in the trash, but Mimi reminds her that people are starving in Africa.) Mimi tells Eva she's going to have to learn how to get rid of men. Eva says the worse a man treats a woman, the more she likes him. Mimi suggests that Eva try to get really pushy with him, then, and maybe he'll lose interest. But Eva doesn't relish the prospect of that, either.

Adriano tries to pump Cindy for info about Eva. She doesn't have a lot of good information, but she remembers that a while back Eva was looking for a certain man (Max Montes, but I don't think she says his name) but it didn't work out because of the big age difference. Adriano tells Cindy that's all. She lingers, asking if he's sure he doesn't need anything else. Nope! She seems disappointed.

Adri goes back to Eva. He says this time it's about work. There's a convention in Acapulco, and it's very exclusive and important and this would be a good time to introduce her as a partner in the company. Eva wants to invite Mimi to come along too. Adri nixes this idea, but promises that he'll respect that fact that Eva doesn't a romance with him. They'll just stick with work.

Eva visits at Helena's. She's not at all happy to hear from Lalito about all the time Pluto's been hanging out there, he's like the mist. Silvia whisks Lalito off to bed, and Eva complains some more about Pluto. Helena asks Eva why she dislikes Pluto so much. "If I didn't know better, I'd think you were jealous!" Eva stammers, wellllll, I'm sorry for the way I react, but you'll understand when your time comes in a few years. Mumble mumble. You see, Eva explains, it's menopause. Hot flashes. It's like having an oven in there, like Lucifer is living there. Her hormones are like a roller coaster. (I don't know if Helena is supposed to be laughing, but Lucero can't help herself!)

Santi and Angelica are in bed, just waking up. He's in pain. Hung over. They've had a wild and crazy night: they got married. Santi is super-duper impactado.

Mimi tells JC to dial down the jealousy a little or he'll be caught. JC says it's not the same if Mimi's not jealous, because she knows Eva is no threat. Mimi urges him to pack up for Acapulco.

Onesimo is playing with some kind of zapping gizmo at a bar. (I don't get out much, so I don't know what that thing is.) They rehash; no new information is revealed.

Fernando is chuckling to himself at home. He's supposed to be doing the dishes, but he's in too good a mood. (Also, he's a lazy useless turd.) He's very pleased with himself: he's found a love letter among Kevin's things. Sort of. It appears to be a mishmash of poems that Kevin has cobbled together. Ferni's all happy that his boy is in love, but he hopes he isn't planning to become a poet on top of being a harpist.

In his own room, Kevin is panting over his email, telling Candy Sweet how much he loves her.

Next day! Eva is ready for her trip to Acapulco with a new dress. Adriano is dressed casually. He is checking her out in her new ankle-length, long-sleeved, buttoned-up-to-the-neck dress.

Helena is scrambling to get ready for work. Ding dong, it's Pluto with flowers. The dude is practically stalking her, but she doesn't seem to mind in the least. He insists that she at least take half a day off for rest. And by "rest" he means hanging out with him, apparently.

(Adriano and Eva are on their way to Acapulco; Pluto and Helena are loafing around town; who's minding the store?)

Santi and Angelica are back from Las Vegas. She's planning to move some of her stuff to his place. Later, at his apartment, he starts to try to tell her something about their living arrangements, but she steamrolls him so he can't get a word in. Then the bank calls: his credit cards are maxed out. Paty and the wedding have buried him in debt!

In Acapulco, Adriano plans "Operation Honeymoon" with the yacht guy. (Refresh your memory, near the end of this recap.) On the boat ride, he tries to play every card in the deck. He talks about feeling melancholy at sea; he's sad about his sister, they used to vacation at a house over there, and oh gee, it seems the engine has stopped. The captain says there's a problem with the fuel line. How original! Eva tells Adri she knows all about Operation Honeymoon; it's an old trick.

Santi asks a financial guy at GI for a loan from the company. The guy says he can do the application, but no promises - especially since Santi hasn't finished paying off the loan for the first wedding yet. But on the bright side, since Santi didn't get married, at least he won't have to pay for a divorce too.

Adri is trying to play innocent while at the same time being a total horndog. Eva says she'll fix the yacht herself. All she'll have to do is to turn the key.

At lunch, Helena tells Pluto she has a plan to fix the problem at Playa Majagua. But Pluto wants to tell her something muy importante: "I am in love with you!" His life has new meaning and he just can't help it. "Give me a chance to win you over and feel how much I love you!"

Sorry for the delay - I was not expecting a double-header and I had to take care of some other things tonight as well.

I don't think part 2 will take much longer, but didn't want to hold up part 1 any longer.

Julie- thanks for doing this two hour one. I didn't realize it was two hours either until tonight. Love your part 1, and you didn't miss a thing. Ohhh, boy, Adri has it bad for Eva. It was too funny the way Adri kept trying to hold Eva's hand and Eva slapping it off.

Hated what Rebeca has done to Helena. I hope she can fix it. I too think that Renato may be JC's unknown brother. He kept bringing him up the other day.

I'm surprised the people in the restaurant weren't telling Santi and Angelica to get a room, lol.

Bad Dad needs to stay alone. Let him suffer, the bastardo. Love how Silvia found that job at the garden place. She so loved those plants and her new boss looks like a sweet heart.

Love whenever Eva says Que Que What? lol. Looking forward to your part 2.

Silvia needs to stay away from that ill-tempered old fart and find someone better because she deserves it.

Thanks, Madelaine. Part 2 is up now. I had to pause for a snack and was tempted to just go to bed, but then I wouldn't be able finish this till Sunday. Phew!

I noticed that Kevin referred to Candy Sweet as "más hermoso" and "más bello." Wouldn't it be "hermosa" and "bella"? Even if the noun they modify isn't present, you'd figure it would be "mujer" or "persona" which would both take feminine nouns. Are we to suspect that Candy Sweet has shared a very surprising and personal secret with Kevin, or am I just overlooking some mundane grammatical rule?

Britishcomedyfan, the good news is that with Eduardo as a reference point, Silvia should have no trouble finding a better man!

Thank you for the recap, Julie. A few thoughts before I read the just-posted part 2.

If Renato is Modesto's other son, then it's in his best interest for JC to be dead. It would make Renato the only living heir. Whereas if the legitimate son is alive, the illigitimate might get nothing. So if Renato discovered that JC is alive, he'd want to keep him far away.

In the previews, JC lets Helena know he's alive. Hallelujah!!! He should have called her from a payphone ages ago. This will certainly change the landscape! Of course Helena will have to be furious at Eva for awhile, but that'll pass.

Yesterday's cap, I said that there were several significant changes. Now tonight, Pluto declares, Santiago gets married, and Monday Helena will find out Juan is still alive. Sounds to me like a new etapa. I wonder if Eva will get a new hairdo?

Oooh! Thank you, Paula. I'll revise the "next time" to say that JC lets Helena know he's alive. I didn't get a very good look at the avances.

Thanks for the double recap, Julie! My gosh, you go beyond the call of recapper duty to get that post up before dawn on Saturday. Wow.

I love how you have everyone ironing your shirts. Don't you wish!

I didn't get half of what everyone was saying (yet again) but the physical comedy was too funny. Loved Eva rolling in and out of the dingy so she wouldn't have to lift up her dress. And that dress!

With the exception of JC, the men in this TN have a very long way to go before they are redeemed. I thought Ferni was on his way, but guess not.

Mil in NC

Yes Julie, in the previews Helena is looking at a video in which Juan says, "por eso I asked Eva to look after you," or algo así.

Great work on an unexpected double-header. What craziness!

That has to be the ugliest dress I've ever seen and who wears a long dress like that on a yacht in the daytime?

Yes, Eduard; cut off your hand. That's real intelligent. You don't deserve Sylvia, Helena, or Eduardo.

Now I know where Gala learned her tricks about screwing people over. Rebeca's little tricks are going to cost the company big money and she won't be able to explain herself when she needs to.

Hah. That dress. I was looking at winter nightgowns at Kmart the other day, and Eva's Acapulco dress would have fit right in.

I think (again, no time to linger over the dialogue when it's a double-feature) that JC complained to Mimi about the time-consuming hair removal routine. Perhaps Eva decided to go shaggy for the conference.

I'm still confused about Kevin's little love affair. We never saw what happened after Candy Sweet answered the door on Tuesday night, did we? I'm just wondering, she told Fernando that she had "ethics." Does this mean she really wouldn't do anything with Kevin, or was that just what she wanted Ferni to think?

And how is Kevin funding this relationship? With his harp lesson money?

Thanks, Julie, for the excellent recap(s). Dang, I missed the second hour. Maybe I can catch a video of it.

Adriano in love with Eva's meaty, perfectly lined lips. He's one twisted guy, huh? I feel Eva/JC's frustration at being trapped.

Don't care if Eva gets a new hairdo, but I really want Helena to get hers fixed. I've seen her in much better styles.

So Pluto declared his love for Helena. Mr. Slick is ick.

La Paloma

Thank you, thank you, thank you, Julie. You took on a lot. I would love an evening of 2 hours of Eva, especially on a Friday... of course that would mean knowing about it first. I think it was you that said this type of thing shows a lack of respect for its viewers on Univision's part. It's also the kind of thing that has me loose interest in a show. Years ago CBS moved Northern Exposure around so much I lost track of the story and eventually stopped looking for it altogether. I turned on the TV at 9:50, just in time to see Eva and Adri on a boat with Eva repeatedly telling him "No me toque!" hahaha I would have liked to see Eva explaining menopause to Helena. and blaming Renato's hair for the project mishaps.

The part that struck me the most (of the first hour) was Silvia job hunting. I felt so bad for her crying on the street. I'm glad she didn't actually speak to that awful husband of hers, but I get how despondent she was that her new life was turning out not to be so easy. This show does tackle ageism as well as sexism. And I was warmed to see her find a niche in a plant nursery growing things with a really nice boss. Silvia looks pained so often; I hope she has an upcoming chapter in life where she can begin to shine.

Yes, I also wonder what they're getting at with Kevin's infatuation with a hooker. With him being only 14 it seems awfully close to taboos for television. Makes me think the whole thing is harmless, but it is getting played up.

Wow. A lot happened this week! The whole landscape has changed. What fun. I enjoy this show more all the time.

Thanks for the recap Julie. Nothing tougher than to be saddled with an unexpected double-header but you handled it like the pro you are. Always enjoy your take on things.

Delighted that long-suffering Silvia has found a job, and with a congenial boss. Figures that if she loved flowers and plants, Eduardo would put the kibosh on it. Now she can do what she loves and even get paid a little for it.

I don't know if Eduardo will miss her company but he WILL miss being able to browbeat her, control her and limit her. He must be really suffering right now!

Thanks again, Julie...above and beyond and with your usual clever wit. Gracias.

I can just imagine Ed sitting down at the dinner table and expecting food to magically appear in front of him. When it doesn't, he'll start yelling, but still the food won't appear!

Tending the plants will be very theraputic for Sylvia. They will respond to her attention, and as they grow she will grow. As they bloom, she will bloom.

Though I must say... Sylvia spends most of one day looking for work. At the end of the first day she hasn't secured a job, and she feels like her life is hopeless? If most jobseekers lost hope that quickly, our unemployment rate would be around 50%!

Yes, I'm the one who said that showing episodes at weird times (so you miss them if you tape the show because you're not home) is disrespectful to viewers. They act as though it's a nuisance to air and schedule these things at all. Last time they did it was when Antonia died. Last night's bonus hour wasn't THAT crucial, but since so much happens in every episode you hate to miss even one.

(I assume that it was two episodes spliced together and not three; does anyone know if our count is still accurate?)

I LOVE Silvia's new job. It's perfect. And I don't think she even went there looking for a job. I think she just gravitated to that place because she needed to be in a peaceful environment around living things. But sometimes that's exactly how opportunities arise.

Paula, your mental picture of Ed is hilarious. What I don't understand is why Silvia called him at all. No matter how sad she might be, he would only make her feel worse.

Good point that one day of job-hunting is a bit soon to get discouraged. My last unemployment lasted five months, and that was one of my shorter ones. But it's one thing to send out resumes and not get any replies; it's another thing when someone yells at you like you're a stray dog, or tells you to your face that you're too old. That would be rough. Way too much abuse for one day, especially for someone who is sticking her neck out for the first time.

Julie thank you so much for the part 2. Mimi is a little jealous, but JC had to remind her he's a guy, lol. Eva's dress was really ugly and I too laughed at her trying to climb in that boat. And the menapause thingy was so funny. I dont' know if it was Helena or Lucero laughing there, but it was very funny. I noticed too that when Lalito gave Eva a kiss, he said something about being scratched and Eva blamed it on her hair, lol.

I wonder how long Eva can avoid Adri. He is going to continue to pursue her. And you are right, Pluti has turned into a stalker. Helena needs to wake up and see what he is doing, although at the end of the epi's she did look a little concerned.

So Santi and Angelica are now married. I wonder how long that will last.

Oh, and Fern butting into the convo with Pluti and Adri. I guess Fern's job is to toot his own horn, lol. He doesn't do anything else.

(does anyone know if our count is still accurate?)

Yes Julie, it is. In the Mexican broadcast:
#59, Confesión Amorosa
#60, La operación luna de miel de Adriano

Someone said the Mexican finale is Sunday. That will be #166. I wonder if they're going to broadcast it right after El Clasico (the big soccer rivalry match)? That would certainly boost ratings.

Julie- Wonderful recap, despite being surprised by a second episode!

I was laughing so hard when Eva tried to get in that boat with the LONG dress (yes, to hide every bit of flesh from Adri's lustful eyes), knocking over everyone in sight.

I hope this (second!) admission of love from Pluti finally opens Helena's eyes that what Eva has been saying is true. I hope she stays strong and doesn't cave because she thinks he's a good guy, and Lalito and Silvia like him.

I was able to watch the second epi that I missed Fri. night. Wonder where Eva got that totally fugly dress? She was determined not to flash a single ounce of flesh for Adri. Too funny for her to cope with the strategy JC used to pull on the ladies.

I did get to watch the second hour on Hulu.com. It was without CC's (it's hit or miss on Hulu) but thanks to Julie's excellent recap I got the gist of it. And the physical comedy doesn't need translation. Mil and Madelaine are right- I laughed out loud at the scenes where Eva gets in the boat and when she's explaining the symptoms of menopause to Helena. And as Julie said, Kevin writes Candy is 'lo mas bello.' In his scene with Onesimo, Pluto is wearing a red string on his wrist. Is Pluto secretly studying the Kabbalah with Madonna?

Thanks for checking the episode count, Paula. During Familia, the count went screwy fairly early on (I think there was a holiday special or something that didn't get aired here) so I'm a little paranoid about that now.

Bill, I've noticed a lot of red string bracelets in telenovelas, so either Kabbalah is popular with these actors or they just all happen to like the look of red string!

I know those dinghies are fairly sturdy, but the way Eva was getting into it I felt sure she was either going to capsize it or end up in the drink. I wonder if that would put out the fire of one of her imaginary hot flashes?

Bill, I wonder of "lo más bello" is the neuter pronoun lo, referring to an abstract? I didn't go back to check the context of the line, so I don't know.
e.g. "En tiempos así, lo más peligroso es olvidarse los riesgos." (The most dangerous is to forget the risks.) In that case "lo" refers to "forgetting" which has no gender, so you use the neuter pronoun "lo."

Ithabill- Almost every other tn actor sports a red string bracelet. I am not 100% pisitive that this really is Kabalah. Could THAT many Mexican tn stars be followers of Kabalah? If so, there must be some major promotion of Kabalah in tn circles, much more so than even in Hollywood. In many cultures around the world the red string bracelet is used for protection against the evil eye and bad luck in general. Most times they are put on children though. It's still a mystery to me what the significance is for these particular folks. Is Televisa so big Kabalah pushing corporation? Is it a Mexican tradition? Maybe they hand them out in acting classes as a good luck charm?

Julie - thanks for the double-header. Loved your "ironing" commentary.

At first I thought Pluti figured Rebecca was behind Helena's Majagua problems, but I guess not.

Poor Silvia's spent every day of her adult life with Bastardo, so it's hard to cut the cord. But she'll blossom at the garden store just like the plants.

Maybe Candy Sweet is just enjoying the freshness of Kevin's schoolboy crush as opposed to the staleness of dealing with paying customers all the time. My guess is she's sticking to her ethics.

Pluti did give Rebeca a hard look after that meeting, so it's possible that he suspects. But then you would expect him to mention it to Onesimo when they met (to have Onesimo be on the lookout for more such behavior), and I don't believe he did.

I think Candy is probably sticking to her ethics too - at least in terms of keeping her pants on. But Kevin might be paying her for her time just the same. Regardless, it's definitely going to be very interesting when Ferni and Marce find out.

Thanks Julie for unexpectedly doing double duty.

I loved the ironing references. They were on point.
