Refugio Para el Amor #163 Wed 11/28/12 Two Women in White—One is getting married, the other is going crazy.

Don Aquiles has to horn in on my last recap. Procopio is reading the proclamation forgiving everyone’s debts to Don A. (It seems to me that the holdouts came off better than those hardworking souls who paid him off or made regular payments. Oh, well, it’s just a tn, it’s just a tn.) Everybody in Het Het is ecstatic.
El Día antes de la Boda
Conversation between DF and HetHet - Rod is trying to put Alexia’s hair in a chignon (moño). Alexia doesn’t want one. He’s on the phone with Luci at the same time wanting to know when she is returning. She’s not sure. She’s not even out of her funereal dress blacks yet. But she assures him she’ll be back for Lor’s wedding. Rod talks about the wedding, marriage and being with the one you love forever—but it sounds like he’s talking about the two of them. Luci breaks it off by telling Rod to put the moño on himself, not on Alexia and chuckles.
Paz, Magda and Violeta are back and Luci says they have to leave right away. Paz is still puzzled at having the wedding date moved up. Luci has to explain, but that fortunately Padre Honesto is with them on this hasty church wedding. (Paz ought to be glad it’s going to be a church wedding and just keep quiet.)
Procopio and Don A’s Licenciado have arrived. They tell Magda and Vio that they need to be present for the reading of the will and Magda agrees reluctantly only because Violeta is Don Aquile’s daughter. Copio gives Violeta the letter Don A wrote. Everyone leaves Vio alone to read the letter. (Translation is on Monday’s posting. I’ll wait while you find it. Meanwhile, I’ll listen to the Het Het birds singing). Violeta is genuinely moved by his words—Erriah!
El Día de la Boda
Barrio de Aragon, where Don Chelo is “hiding out” – Don Chelo is listening to his friend talk about Mateo. Don C says he’s growing up fast and soon he’ll leave him; his friend wonders what he’s talking about, Mateo has a long way to go, he’s still a child. Don Chelo is not so sure. His friend thinks he’s acting a bit peculiar, but Don C. thinks life has its laws, whether one thinks they are just or not.
Some Expensive Watering Hole so Julie can Drink her Lunch - Carola is warning CQ not to put all her pesos in one guy’s billfold, especially one she doesn’t know well. CQ blows her off saying, true, we don’t know the financial advisor well, but Mirko does. Since Mirko is a friend of Gala’s and René has been his FA a long time, she has no doubts about him. Carola reminds her she hasn’t known Mirko for very long either. “Caras vemos, mañas (bad habits) no sabemos.” Julie giggles implying she’d like to get to know his mañas. She finally takes Carola’s words to heart and get into this investment thing slowly by keeping her NYC apartment and her US bank account out of the game. Still, she has a goodly amount to invest in a sure thing. In a year, she’ll be rich. Now we know her brain has been addled by champagne.
Brigida is Fridgiting over the Hospital ID – Oh dear, what to do, what to do with this (Roddy’s hospital ID). Things are looking pretty bad right now (las cosas se estan poniendo color de hormiga). She’s considering her options. The best thing to do is just to get rid of it, because Rodrigo may think she’s to blame for the whole disappearance thing and she has no defense. OTOH, if she keeps the bracelet as a bartering tool, there’s more money to be had as payback for the maltreatment she’s received from Gala, and that would be a lot she’s owed. They’re going to learn, “Que es amar a Dios en tierra de los Indios.” (That sounds as if those cross-carrying conquistadores weren't very welcome back then.)
TL Empresa, Max’s Office – Aldo and Max are having a confab about Max’s off-the-books empresa activities. Aldo tells Max that Ivan & Lastra’s books are a disaster (thanks to Aldo, who moved the decimal point to the left and subtracted a few zeros ). They are laundering money and snubbing you (thanks to Aldo’s sleight of hand). No one makes a fool of me, says Max (except Aldo). Aldo’s recommendation is to accuse them (as quickly as possible, the quicker he'll become the Emperador del Norte). Max thinks that is ridiculous. How could that work without divulging his hand in it. Aldo assures him he can clean up his profile electronically so his name doesn’t appear, because he’s the expert and he knows how. Max says it’s a go. Aldo is all, como tu digas, uncle (and soon to be como YO digo).
He gets up to leave, but Max calls him back. Max knows all about the antro Aldo opened. Gulp. Before Aldo can pee in his pants, Max tells him not to worry. He’s proud that Aldo succeeded in what he set out to do for himself. He hands him a big yellow envelope with at least one fat check and the deed to one of his newer antro properties to reward his loyalty.
Aldo is now in a hurry to leave and slips about something important having to do with Janah which makes Max’ eyes bug out. Max wants to know what it is. We don’t know if he divulges that information or not.
TL Mansion – Roselena’s Calvary Preparation Room – RE is ritualistically putting on a penitent’s outfit (Non-itchy, white raw silk sackcloth outer garment by Balenciaga; exclusive twisted silken rope cincture, sold separately—made from royal silkworms and imported from Thailand). She sees the stigmata reflected in the mirror. She feels sublimely blessed by invisible pain and spiritually cleansed as blood runs down the palms of her hands. I am your chosen one, your child, your most beloved, she supplicates. Viewerville sees her hands and they are not pierced or bloody. Then we see her bandaging her imaginary wounds. She is drawn deeper into delusions of beatification.
La Casota Grande de Dios – The Wedding of Janah and Lorenzo - This is the first time Viewerville has been inside the sanctuary. Most of the time we’ve been confined to Padre Honesto’s roomy office in the sacristy. This is a very modern church (sorry, but it looks like an indoor sports arena with the exposed rafters to me), open to the outside and some kind of modern cross made of large stainless steel and copper tubing hanging from the ceiling—not unlike an abstract anvil.
Padre Honesto is in his wedding finery and everyone is waiting for the bride. Here she comes on Rodrigo’s arm. Lorenzo looks smashingly handsome and Janah looks beautiful, elegant beyond words and absolutely radiant. Her strapless white gown is modest, the bodice fitted, shaped and pleated across the bust, the softly flared, floor-length skirt encircled by cascades of narrow flounces. Her hair is pulled away from her face, curled and caught by a waist-length veil that falls down her back and pinned under her hair with an open white rose. She’s wearing tastefully chosen pearl-drop earrings and no jewelry around her neck. She’s carrying a small bouquet of deep purple flowers. Attending her is Melissa, who looks gorgeous in an above-the-knee royal blue, one-shouldered sheath dress with her hair swept up and curled. Alexia is the flower girl. She looks cute. She joins Luciana at the front and then they both sit down in the pews next to Rodrigo. (Only Mateo is missing to make the family complete.)
The intimate group gathered to witness this union consists of Paz, Patricio, Fabian, Matilde, Claudio, Luciana, Rodrigo, Oscar, Conny, Aldo and Alexia. Max slips in at the last minute, probably surprising everybody, but smiles and winks at Janah, putting his finger to his lips to signal his approval of the secrecy. Padre Honesto begins the ceremony. We see the abstract anvil again, right over the Padre, Lor and Janah. Oh, no. The bride and groom smile innocently and lovingly at each other. Matilde and Melissa approach with a crystal lazo to put around them, the symbol of the love that binds them. Luci and Rodrigo bring them their rings but gaze at each other with longing as the rings are placed on others' fingers. Fabian brings the arras, a tradition reaching back to Roman times, to be blessed by the priest before Lor gives the coins to Janah, symbolizing the trust he gives his bride to share and manage the family wealth and she accepts the coins, symbolizing her promise to care for him and their home wisely. Padre blesses the union and ends with the familiar words, what God hath brought together, let no man tear asunder.
TL Mansion, Kitchen – Genaro is having a cup of tea when his patrona enters. He’s startled by RE’s appearance (both her arrival and her fashion statement) as he’s probably never seen her looking like that before. She announces that she needs to see Padre Honesto right away. He wants to know if she needs anything. The new maid is just trying hard not to be noticed. RE says she needs to talk to the Padre and show him something important.
La Casota Grande de Dios – Miraculously, the Virgencita maintained the upper hand and the couple gets through the whole ceremony without any catastrophe from the anvil, the devil or his earthly minions. As Lorenzo and Janah are sharing their first kisses as husband and wife, a terrible scream is heard at the rear of the sanctuary. It the handmaiden of a god who certainly doesn’t inhabit this consecrated space. Ave Maria gives way to a full symphony orchestra with a rising crescendo and the sound of a chorus soaring overhead, telling us this is a dramatic moment. Everyone turns toward the source of the discordant sound. It is Roselena standing in the aisle. The two Women in White are facing each other.
RE is screaming to her god, why did you do this to me, why did you abandon me. Janah, why did you fail me. Janah is heard in the background crying out, mama. Then Lorenzo’s voice is heard saying that he and Janah love each other. RE says she will never forgive them, NEVER. Her whole family has betrayed her, abandoned her. Rod is the first to step forward to reach his mother and tries to calm to her. She’s still screaming at him, everybody. She didn’t want Janah to marry this good-for-nothing. Pato approaches and tells her they knew that and also that she and Boris were planning to stop the later wedding. RE is in complete denial. She thinks she can still prevent them from being joined in holy matrimony. Max tries to explain that it’s too late, there is nothing she can do to separate them; Padre tries to tell her that God has already blessed this union. RE collapses, just when things were getting good. Janah rushes to her side, along with Rod and Max. We see Luci in the background with her hands to her face in disbelief. Paz is closest to RE, but can only stare down. Lor approaches. Everyone is gobstruck, for real. Padre can only stand stock still, staring, his hands folded together in prayer.
The camera pans the sanctuary and comes to a menacing stop at the copper cross, triumphantly still hanging in place.
TL Mansion, Max and RE’s Bedroom – RE is in bed, out cold, being ministered by Max with only Janah, Rod & Pato in attendance. Pato wants to know how she found out about the wedding. Rodrigo tells him that it was not intentional, Genaro told him about her coming into the kitchen and wanting to be taken to see Padre Honesto. They’ve never seen her in this sort of crisis before. They see her bandaged hands and the boys want Max to see what she did to herself. Janah starts to undo the bandages. They see there is nothing there. (No one called for medical assistance, an ambulance, taken her to the hospital. Instead they called Dr. Hauser. I would have preferred something not quite so cliché or bingo worthy. Well, ok, this is an important family and they can’t risk a scandal in the media, which this surely is.)
Luciana’s DF Apartment – It’s Claudio leading the way in, still musing over the recent events. Paz and Luci follow him in. Very tellingly, Claudio says the RE he knew no longer exists. Each day she is more disturbed, confused (trastornando mas). She has so much guilt and hate she can’t mask it any longer. Luci sees her more out of touch with reality every day. Each day she is worse. Paz says it doesn’t surprise her one bit. That woman lost her senses 25 years ago, when she gave Luci away to her. Only a sick woman could have done what she did. Rod calls Luci and they learn that nothing was on her hands or arms. Rod thinks it’s very strange for her to have done something like that.
Later on, Paz, Claudio and Luciana are still rehashing the happening at the wedding. Regardless of all the damage she did, Claudio can’t help having compassion for what RE’s going through. Paz is thinking of her son and the pain he must feel on starting out his married life. Luciana is sure he and Janah, being together, will be happy.
TL Mansion – Dr. Hauser made it to RE’s bedside. She’s given her a sedative to let her sleep for a good long time. This was a serious crisis and Dr. H. is not surprised. RE quit coming to sessions and stopped taking her medications. How can they help her? Dr. H says it’s up to her and so far she hasn’t admitted she’s sick. (I’d call that pretty dismissive. Dr. H knows that five years hasn’t made her any better—perhaps only kept her from getting worse, sooner.) Max shows her the bandages. When she wakes up she should give you an explanation, says the doc, but don’t upset her, keep her quiet (that’s a major bit of contradiction right there). Max is definitely perplexed.
Meanwhile, Pato and Rodrigo have joined the rest of the family, Oscar and the Padre in the sitting room. How’s RE? She’s been sedated. Oscar has to leave. What about her hands? There was nothing there. Janah notes that every day she seemed more peculiar. What’s going to happen to her?
Pato comes to see Matilde who is fretting over Roselena. He tries to comfort her. She thinks if she hadn’t opened her mouth [about Janah] her niña would be alright. Pato tries to tell her that she did the right thing—she helped assure that Janah wouldn’t be unhappy the rest of her life without Lorenzo. Mati is still trying to find a way to shoulder the blame. Pato is having nothing of it. Sooner or later she would have had a serious crisis, the wedding just accelerated it. Although he might be right, Mati thinks later would have been better.
Dr. Hauser is about ready to leave, but she is leaving her cell phone number with them, in case they need to get in touch with her. Padre is leaving, too. Dr. Hauser and Padre agree to meet sooner, rather than later. (I guess they need to compare notes.)
Conny is going to check in with Max to see if he needs anything. Aldo wonders out loud to the newlyweds (Janah is still in her wedding dress) if they are going to spend the night here with his tía o qué? Rod agrees they should leave to spend their first night as husband and wife together somewhere else. Pato seconds the motion and promises to let them know right away if anything happens. Lorenzo thinks the bros are right and suggests they go back to the little room in the barrio since their new apartment only has a bed. Janah wants to be in her own place, even if all they have there is a bed (what else would they need, just sayin'). Just pillows and blankets, of course. Aldo offers to drive them over. Janah goes off to say goodbye to her mother.
Max is holding the bandages in his hands. Janah enters. (I just noticed, she’s wearing black shoes—is this a wedding fashion trend I missed?) They have a sweet father-daughter moment as Max tells her adelante and lots of luck in your new life. She feels awful. Like Mati, she thinks she’s to blame for her mother’s current condition, but at the same time, she can’t help feeling content to be Lorenzo’s wife. Max begins, your happiness shouldn’t turn into a motive for sadness. It probably wasn’t the best timing, but you did what your heart dictated. What, in exchange for my mother’s health? No, don’t say that (both Max’s and Jana’s eyes are glistening with tears.) It’s sad that my three children feel responsible for any of the bad behavior of their parents. This misfortune started a long time ago. You shouldn’t have to pay for our errors. You are innocent and free of the responsibility. Carry that in your heart.
Mirko’s No-Tell Hotel – (Ed. Note: Why did I have to see any of this next scene. I was so into the beautiful wedding, Janah’s dress [I’d say YES to that dress], Lorenzo’s pride, RE’s nervous breakdown [great fun], the father-daughter talk [genuine and touching]…this made me want to gag…oh, it’s Gag-me with Mirko. How appropriate. Ok, here goes, even though I don’t want to.)
Thankfully, the two have finished their sex-in-a-bed business. Gala wants to know why he always brings her to a hotel and not his apartment. (I’d ask the same question.) His answer is which one would she like to see, he has so many of them (he’s more likely to count zero on the fingers of both hands). To impress her, he names places all over Europe and South America. He needs them for work. (Does anyone know what he tells his marks he does for a living?) And, he’s getting ready to buy another one in the very nice upscale neighborhood of Olivares (probably with money he’s getting from these latest suckers). She envies him his life, full of travel, best hotels, best shopping evvva. He promises her the moon, the stars and travel, best hotels, best shopping evvva (toes crossed) as his life partner. Gala, thinking she’s verrry smarrrrrt, as she says, whoa there, she doesn’t want to be married. She just got out of one relationship and the last thing she wants is to get into another.
For one hot second Mirko might be worried, but recovers his groove and his sublime slime. It’s fine with him, they don’t need a formal arrangement, they can just be free to have the life they want. The only contract she has to sign is the investment contract. So sex-business turns to money-business. Gala informs him that René hasn’t sent her any documents to sign yet. Mirko tells her René sent them to him. If he’s got them, she’s ready to sign. He plays the reluctant businessman, not wanting to convert their bedtime session into a contract signing session. Why not wait until tomorrow he asks, forcing a loving smile. She doesn’t see what the problem is, but he claims that tonight is only for you and for me (oh, I think it’s beyond gagging now, I think I’m going to hurl some slime of my own).
Lorenzo and Janah’s Penthouse – (Oh, goodie, we haven’t seen the last of that beautiful wedding dress yet.) Lorenzo and Janah have entered their own apartment and are greeted by a beautiful arrangement of pink roses just beginning to open. Janah suspects it’s from Melissa. Janah takes one of the roses out. Lor takes it from her and brings it up to her chin. Janah wants to furnish and decorate their place perfectly. Lorenzo says the apartment is already perfect when she is in it. She’s chilly, he puts his coat around her. She turns and they start to kiss, kisses that lead to the first time they will make love. Lor moves back to admire her. He is tearing up with emotion. Janah tells him not to cry, not to be sad, they are going to be together forever. He picks her up and carries her to their bedroom to consummate their love for each other. We get to see them curled up tenderly in each other’s arms, satisfied, content.
The Next Día
The Boxcar Barrio – Don C. has gotten Mateo up early again. The poor lad can’t deal with these early hours and to have to go so far, again. Don C. says it has to be done, as long as there is work for him in Aragon. Doña Chuy stops him. She’s got his number—he’s avoiding Don Rodrigo and Luciana. He knows they’ve been looking for him to talk. Don C is still claiming he has things to do, but Doña C knows they are just a pretext. He’s andando del Tingo al Tango (see vocab). She continues, his running around has to do with the adoption, which at first he was willing to talk to them about it but now he’s not. He gives in and agrees to stay put and follow through. Mateo is vociferously grateful.
TL Mansion – Patricio is calling Luciana from his room to let her know he’ll be by soon so they can go to Mateo’s place together and Patricio can meet him. She asks about RE, but she was still asleep when he stopped in to see her earlier. Just then Mati rushes in to tell him that RE is worse and is calling for him. Max is trying to restrain an hysterical RE as Patricio arrives. She wants to talk to her children. Max gets up to call Dr. Hauser. RE begs Patricio to get Luciana, she needs to talk to Luciana. She will not calm down. She feels death breathing down her neck. She needs him to bring Luciana to her. She needs to talk to her.
Rod and Alexia’s Refugio in the Sky – Rod is telling FrBrigida that they are going to go by the house later to see RE and will eat there. FrBr offers to go along to help in any way she can. He’s grateful for her offer and says she can go. He’s going to the office for awhile, then pick up Alexia and head for the Mansion. He calls Luci and offers to come by for her, but since Patricio is picking her up, they’ll just meet at the boxcar. He’s almost out the door with Alexia when he gets the call from Max telling him to get to the house asap, RE’s condition has worsened.
Luciana’s DF Apartment – Patricio arrives at Luci’s but not to take her to the Vagon where Don C. lives but to the house. RE has gotten worse and is asking to see her. Luci is puzzled.
Somewhere in DF – Gala is on the phone asking if Julie is ready to sign the contract. Yes, but she’s going to hold back the apartment in NYC and her little NYC bank account. Gala scoffs at her conservative approach to wealth beyond their wildest imagination. Now’s the time to get into the game with a sure thing; take the plunge. She should invest every penny she has, like she and Fernanda are planning to do. Julie is just being cautious, after talking to Carola. Gala scoffs again, what does Carola know about investing. She reminds Julie that he who doesn’t take risks doesn’t win (we would say she’s kissing the winning risk taker as she speaks—he played the game well). Julie finally caves and hopes René will accept the deed to her apartment as cash. Gala will make sure of that—as she and Mirko suck face. (Mirko is actually having an out of body experience dancing with dollars right about now).
TL Mansion, RE & Max’s Bedroom – Max lets Luci in. RE is sitting on a couch blubbering and talking to herself and wringing her hands. Luciana speaks to her. RE dismisses Max. She doesn’t hold back. She confesses that she stole Luci’s son. She turns to look at her, “I wrenched that baby from your arms. It was me.” She’s down on her knees in front of Luci. Luci is stunned.

Stigmata: Sorry to disappoint you, Judy, but I had excerpted pertinent passages from Wikipedia—the very link Urban A gave us. I’ll repeat this much: A high percentage (perhaps over 80%) of all stigmatics are women. Some [always a cautionary word] modern research has indicated stigmata are of hysterical origin, or linked to dissociative identity disorders, especially the link between dietary constriction by self-starvation, dissociative mental states and self-mutilation, in the context of a religious belief.
Cincture: [Again, excerpted from the wonderful, wonderful world of Wikipedia] In the Roman Catholic Church, the cincture is a long, rope-like cord with tassled or knotted ends, tied around the waist. I have been falling in love with Claudio Linares, little by little, not realizing it, just like Melissa. David Ostrosky Winograd, who plays Claudio, is 56, his father is from Saudi Arabia, mother from Poland—no wonder he seemed so un-Mexican to me….and to my amusement was in Maria Mercedes, as Dr. Muñoz, and Alborada, as Agustín de Corsa (Hipolita’s bio-dad), although I can’t for the life remember him in either of those.

Carola reminds her she hasn’t known Mirko for very long either. “Caras vemos, mañas (bad habits) no sabemos.” Julie giggles implying she’d like to get to know his mañas. She finally takes Carola’s words to heart and get into this investment thing slowly by keeping her NYC apartment and her US bank account out of the game. Still, she has a goodly amount to invest in a sure thing. In a year, she’ll be rich. Now we know her brain has been addled by champagne.
Brigida is Fridgiting over the Hospital ID – Oh dear, what to do, what to do with this (Roddy’s hospital ID). Things are looking pretty bad right now (las cosas se estan poniendo color de hormiga). She’s considering her options. The best thing to do is just to get rid of it, because Rodrigo may think she’s to blame for the whole disappearance thing and she has no defense. OTOH, if she keeps the bracelet as a bartering tool, there’s more money to be had as payback for the maltreatment she’s received from Gala, and that would be a lot she’s owed. They’re going to learn, “Que es amar a Dios en tierra de los Indios.” (That sounds as if those cross-carrying conquistadores weren't very welcome back then.)
TL Empresa, Max’s Office – Aldo and Max are having a confab about Max’s off-the-books empresa activities. Aldo tells Max that Ivan & Lastra’s books are a disaster (thanks to Aldo, who moved the decimal point to the left and subtracted a few zeros ). They are laundering money and snubbing you (thanks to Aldo’s sleight of hand). No one makes a fool of me, says Max (except Aldo). Aldo’s recommendation is to accuse them (as quickly as possible, the quicker he'll become the Emperador del Norte). Max thinks that is ridiculous. How could that work without divulging his hand in it. Aldo assures him he can clean up his profile electronically so his name doesn’t appear, because he’s the expert and he knows how. Max says it’s a go. Aldo is all, como tu digas, uncle (and soon to be como YO digo).
He gets up to leave, but Max calls him back. Max knows all about the antro Aldo opened. Gulp. Before Aldo can pee in his pants, Max tells him not to worry. He’s proud that Aldo succeeded in what he set out to do for himself. He hands him a big yellow envelope with at least one fat check and the deed to one of his newer antro properties to reward his loyalty.
Aldo is now in a hurry to leave and slips about something important having to do with Janah which makes Max’ eyes bug out. Max wants to know what it is. We don’t know if he divulges that information or not.
TL Mansion – Roselena’s Calvary Preparation Room – RE is ritualistically putting on a penitent’s outfit (Non-itchy, white raw silk sackcloth outer garment by Balenciaga; exclusive twisted silken rope cincture, sold separately—made from royal silkworms and imported from Thailand). She sees the stigmata reflected in the mirror. She feels sublimely blessed by invisible pain and spiritually cleansed as blood runs down the palms of her hands. I am your chosen one, your child, your most beloved, she supplicates. Viewerville sees her hands and they are not pierced or bloody. Then we see her bandaging her imaginary wounds. She is drawn deeper into delusions of beatification.
La Casota Grande de Dios – The Wedding of Janah and Lorenzo - This is the first time Viewerville has been inside the sanctuary. Most of the time we’ve been confined to Padre Honesto’s roomy office in the sacristy. This is a very modern church (sorry, but it looks like an indoor sports arena with the exposed rafters to me), open to the outside and some kind of modern cross made of large stainless steel and copper tubing hanging from the ceiling—not unlike an abstract anvil.
Padre Honesto is in his wedding finery and everyone is waiting for the bride. Here she comes on Rodrigo’s arm. Lorenzo looks smashingly handsome and Janah looks beautiful, elegant beyond words and absolutely radiant. Her strapless white gown is modest, the bodice fitted, shaped and pleated across the bust, the softly flared, floor-length skirt encircled by cascades of narrow flounces. Her hair is pulled away from her face, curled and caught by a waist-length veil that falls down her back and pinned under her hair with an open white rose. She’s wearing tastefully chosen pearl-drop earrings and no jewelry around her neck. She’s carrying a small bouquet of deep purple flowers. Attending her is Melissa, who looks gorgeous in an above-the-knee royal blue, one-shouldered sheath dress with her hair swept up and curled. Alexia is the flower girl. She looks cute. She joins Luciana at the front and then they both sit down in the pews next to Rodrigo. (Only Mateo is missing to make the family complete.)
The intimate group gathered to witness this union consists of Paz, Patricio, Fabian, Matilde, Claudio, Luciana, Rodrigo, Oscar, Conny, Aldo and Alexia. Max slips in at the last minute, probably surprising everybody, but smiles and winks at Janah, putting his finger to his lips to signal his approval of the secrecy. Padre Honesto begins the ceremony. We see the abstract anvil again, right over the Padre, Lor and Janah. Oh, no. The bride and groom smile innocently and lovingly at each other. Matilde and Melissa approach with a crystal lazo to put around them, the symbol of the love that binds them. Luci and Rodrigo bring them their rings but gaze at each other with longing as the rings are placed on others' fingers. Fabian brings the arras, a tradition reaching back to Roman times, to be blessed by the priest before Lor gives the coins to Janah, symbolizing the trust he gives his bride to share and manage the family wealth and she accepts the coins, symbolizing her promise to care for him and their home wisely. Padre blesses the union and ends with the familiar words, what God hath brought together, let no man tear asunder.
TL Mansion, Kitchen – Genaro is having a cup of tea when his patrona enters. He’s startled by RE’s appearance (both her arrival and her fashion statement) as he’s probably never seen her looking like that before. She announces that she needs to see Padre Honesto right away. He wants to know if she needs anything. The new maid is just trying hard not to be noticed. RE says she needs to talk to the Padre and show him something important.
La Casota Grande de Dios – Miraculously, the Virgencita maintained the upper hand and the couple gets through the whole ceremony without any catastrophe from the anvil, the devil or his earthly minions. As Lorenzo and Janah are sharing their first kisses as husband and wife, a terrible scream is heard at the rear of the sanctuary. It the handmaiden of a god who certainly doesn’t inhabit this consecrated space. Ave Maria gives way to a full symphony orchestra with a rising crescendo and the sound of a chorus soaring overhead, telling us this is a dramatic moment. Everyone turns toward the source of the discordant sound. It is Roselena standing in the aisle. The two Women in White are facing each other.
RE is screaming to her god, why did you do this to me, why did you abandon me. Janah, why did you fail me. Janah is heard in the background crying out, mama. Then Lorenzo’s voice is heard saying that he and Janah love each other. RE says she will never forgive them, NEVER. Her whole family has betrayed her, abandoned her. Rod is the first to step forward to reach his mother and tries to calm to her. She’s still screaming at him, everybody. She didn’t want Janah to marry this good-for-nothing. Pato approaches and tells her they knew that and also that she and Boris were planning to stop the later wedding. RE is in complete denial. She thinks she can still prevent them from being joined in holy matrimony. Max tries to explain that it’s too late, there is nothing she can do to separate them; Padre tries to tell her that God has already blessed this union. RE collapses, just when things were getting good. Janah rushes to her side, along with Rod and Max. We see Luci in the background with her hands to her face in disbelief. Paz is closest to RE, but can only stare down. Lor approaches. Everyone is gobstruck, for real. Padre can only stand stock still, staring, his hands folded together in prayer.
The camera pans the sanctuary and comes to a menacing stop at the copper cross, triumphantly still hanging in place.
TL Mansion, Max and RE’s Bedroom – RE is in bed, out cold, being ministered by Max with only Janah, Rod & Pato in attendance. Pato wants to know how she found out about the wedding. Rodrigo tells him that it was not intentional, Genaro told him about her coming into the kitchen and wanting to be taken to see Padre Honesto. They’ve never seen her in this sort of crisis before. They see her bandaged hands and the boys want Max to see what she did to herself. Janah starts to undo the bandages. They see there is nothing there. (No one called for medical assistance, an ambulance, taken her to the hospital. Instead they called Dr. Hauser. I would have preferred something not quite so cliché or bingo worthy. Well, ok, this is an important family and they can’t risk a scandal in the media, which this surely is.)
Luciana’s DF Apartment – It’s Claudio leading the way in, still musing over the recent events. Paz and Luci follow him in. Very tellingly, Claudio says the RE he knew no longer exists. Each day she is more disturbed, confused (trastornando mas). She has so much guilt and hate she can’t mask it any longer. Luci sees her more out of touch with reality every day. Each day she is worse. Paz says it doesn’t surprise her one bit. That woman lost her senses 25 years ago, when she gave Luci away to her. Only a sick woman could have done what she did. Rod calls Luci and they learn that nothing was on her hands or arms. Rod thinks it’s very strange for her to have done something like that.
Later on, Paz, Claudio and Luciana are still rehashing the happening at the wedding. Regardless of all the damage she did, Claudio can’t help having compassion for what RE’s going through. Paz is thinking of her son and the pain he must feel on starting out his married life. Luciana is sure he and Janah, being together, will be happy.
TL Mansion – Dr. Hauser made it to RE’s bedside. She’s given her a sedative to let her sleep for a good long time. This was a serious crisis and Dr. H. is not surprised. RE quit coming to sessions and stopped taking her medications. How can they help her? Dr. H says it’s up to her and so far she hasn’t admitted she’s sick. (I’d call that pretty dismissive. Dr. H knows that five years hasn’t made her any better—perhaps only kept her from getting worse, sooner.) Max shows her the bandages. When she wakes up she should give you an explanation, says the doc, but don’t upset her, keep her quiet (that’s a major bit of contradiction right there). Max is definitely perplexed.
Meanwhile, Pato and Rodrigo have joined the rest of the family, Oscar and the Padre in the sitting room. How’s RE? She’s been sedated. Oscar has to leave. What about her hands? There was nothing there. Janah notes that every day she seemed more peculiar. What’s going to happen to her?
Pato comes to see Matilde who is fretting over Roselena. He tries to comfort her. She thinks if she hadn’t opened her mouth [about Janah] her niña would be alright. Pato tries to tell her that she did the right thing—she helped assure that Janah wouldn’t be unhappy the rest of her life without Lorenzo. Mati is still trying to find a way to shoulder the blame. Pato is having nothing of it. Sooner or later she would have had a serious crisis, the wedding just accelerated it. Although he might be right, Mati thinks later would have been better.
Dr. Hauser is about ready to leave, but she is leaving her cell phone number with them, in case they need to get in touch with her. Padre is leaving, too. Dr. Hauser and Padre agree to meet sooner, rather than later. (I guess they need to compare notes.)
Conny is going to check in with Max to see if he needs anything. Aldo wonders out loud to the newlyweds (Janah is still in her wedding dress) if they are going to spend the night here with his tía o qué? Rod agrees they should leave to spend their first night as husband and wife together somewhere else. Pato seconds the motion and promises to let them know right away if anything happens. Lorenzo thinks the bros are right and suggests they go back to the little room in the barrio since their new apartment only has a bed. Janah wants to be in her own place, even if all they have there is a bed (what else would they need, just sayin'). Just pillows and blankets, of course. Aldo offers to drive them over. Janah goes off to say goodbye to her mother.
Max is holding the bandages in his hands. Janah enters. (I just noticed, she’s wearing black shoes—is this a wedding fashion trend I missed?) They have a sweet father-daughter moment as Max tells her adelante and lots of luck in your new life. She feels awful. Like Mati, she thinks she’s to blame for her mother’s current condition, but at the same time, she can’t help feeling content to be Lorenzo’s wife. Max begins, your happiness shouldn’t turn into a motive for sadness. It probably wasn’t the best timing, but you did what your heart dictated. What, in exchange for my mother’s health? No, don’t say that (both Max’s and Jana’s eyes are glistening with tears.) It’s sad that my three children feel responsible for any of the bad behavior of their parents. This misfortune started a long time ago. You shouldn’t have to pay for our errors. You are innocent and free of the responsibility. Carry that in your heart.
Mirko’s No-Tell Hotel – (Ed. Note: Why did I have to see any of this next scene. I was so into the beautiful wedding, Janah’s dress [I’d say YES to that dress], Lorenzo’s pride, RE’s nervous breakdown [great fun], the father-daughter talk [genuine and touching]…this made me want to gag…oh, it’s Gag-me with Mirko. How appropriate. Ok, here goes, even though I don’t want to.)
Thankfully, the two have finished their sex-in-a-bed business. Gala wants to know why he always brings her to a hotel and not his apartment. (I’d ask the same question.) His answer is which one would she like to see, he has so many of them (he’s more likely to count zero on the fingers of both hands). To impress her, he names places all over Europe and South America. He needs them for work. (Does anyone know what he tells his marks he does for a living?) And, he’s getting ready to buy another one in the very nice upscale neighborhood of Olivares (probably with money he’s getting from these latest suckers). She envies him his life, full of travel, best hotels, best shopping evvva. He promises her the moon, the stars and travel, best hotels, best shopping evvva (toes crossed) as his life partner. Gala, thinking she’s verrry smarrrrrt, as she says, whoa there, she doesn’t want to be married. She just got out of one relationship and the last thing she wants is to get into another.
For one hot second Mirko might be worried, but recovers his groove and his sublime slime. It’s fine with him, they don’t need a formal arrangement, they can just be free to have the life they want. The only contract she has to sign is the investment contract. So sex-business turns to money-business. Gala informs him that René hasn’t sent her any documents to sign yet. Mirko tells her René sent them to him. If he’s got them, she’s ready to sign. He plays the reluctant businessman, not wanting to convert their bedtime session into a contract signing session. Why not wait until tomorrow he asks, forcing a loving smile. She doesn’t see what the problem is, but he claims that tonight is only for you and for me (oh, I think it’s beyond gagging now, I think I’m going to hurl some slime of my own).
Lorenzo and Janah’s Penthouse – (Oh, goodie, we haven’t seen the last of that beautiful wedding dress yet.) Lorenzo and Janah have entered their own apartment and are greeted by a beautiful arrangement of pink roses just beginning to open. Janah suspects it’s from Melissa. Janah takes one of the roses out. Lor takes it from her and brings it up to her chin. Janah wants to furnish and decorate their place perfectly. Lorenzo says the apartment is already perfect when she is in it. She’s chilly, he puts his coat around her. She turns and they start to kiss, kisses that lead to the first time they will make love. Lor moves back to admire her. He is tearing up with emotion. Janah tells him not to cry, not to be sad, they are going to be together forever. He picks her up and carries her to their bedroom to consummate their love for each other. We get to see them curled up tenderly in each other’s arms, satisfied, content.
The Next Día
The Boxcar Barrio – Don C. has gotten Mateo up early again. The poor lad can’t deal with these early hours and to have to go so far, again. Don C. says it has to be done, as long as there is work for him in Aragon. Doña Chuy stops him. She’s got his number—he’s avoiding Don Rodrigo and Luciana. He knows they’ve been looking for him to talk. Don C is still claiming he has things to do, but Doña C knows they are just a pretext. He’s andando del Tingo al Tango (see vocab). She continues, his running around has to do with the adoption, which at first he was willing to talk to them about it but now he’s not. He gives in and agrees to stay put and follow through. Mateo is vociferously grateful.
TL Mansion – Patricio is calling Luciana from his room to let her know he’ll be by soon so they can go to Mateo’s place together and Patricio can meet him. She asks about RE, but she was still asleep when he stopped in to see her earlier. Just then Mati rushes in to tell him that RE is worse and is calling for him. Max is trying to restrain an hysterical RE as Patricio arrives. She wants to talk to her children. Max gets up to call Dr. Hauser. RE begs Patricio to get Luciana, she needs to talk to Luciana. She will not calm down. She feels death breathing down her neck. She needs him to bring Luciana to her. She needs to talk to her.
Rod and Alexia’s Refugio in the Sky – Rod is telling FrBrigida that they are going to go by the house later to see RE and will eat there. FrBr offers to go along to help in any way she can. He’s grateful for her offer and says she can go. He’s going to the office for awhile, then pick up Alexia and head for the Mansion. He calls Luci and offers to come by for her, but since Patricio is picking her up, they’ll just meet at the boxcar. He’s almost out the door with Alexia when he gets the call from Max telling him to get to the house asap, RE’s condition has worsened.
Luciana’s DF Apartment – Patricio arrives at Luci’s but not to take her to the Vagon where Don C. lives but to the house. RE has gotten worse and is asking to see her. Luci is puzzled.
Somewhere in DF – Gala is on the phone asking if Julie is ready to sign the contract. Yes, but she’s going to hold back the apartment in NYC and her little NYC bank account. Gala scoffs at her conservative approach to wealth beyond their wildest imagination. Now’s the time to get into the game with a sure thing; take the plunge. She should invest every penny she has, like she and Fernanda are planning to do. Julie is just being cautious, after talking to Carola. Gala scoffs again, what does Carola know about investing. She reminds Julie that he who doesn’t take risks doesn’t win (we would say she’s kissing the winning risk taker as she speaks—he played the game well). Julie finally caves and hopes René will accept the deed to her apartment as cash. Gala will make sure of that—as she and Mirko suck face. (Mirko is actually having an out of body experience dancing with dollars right about now).
TL Mansion, RE & Max’s Bedroom – Max lets Luci in. RE is sitting on a couch blubbering and talking to herself and wringing her hands. Luciana speaks to her. RE dismisses Max. She doesn’t hold back. She confesses that she stole Luci’s son. She turns to look at her, “I wrenched that baby from your arms. It was me.” She’s down on her knees in front of Luci. Luci is stunned.

I have been falling in love with Claudio Linares, little by little, not realizing it, just like Melissa. David Ostrosky Winograd, who plays Claudio, is 56, his father is from Saudi Arabia, mother from Poland—no wonder he seemed so un-Mexican to me….and to my amusement was in Maria Mercedes, as Dr. Muñoz, and Alborada, as Agustín de Corsa (Hipolita’s bio-dad), although I can’t for the life remember him in either of those.

Loved that wedding, so wonderful and beautiful and what a great couple they are. I loved their new place too. Even though they only have a bed they are extremely happy. Loved the bouquet of roses and his lifted Hanna up and taking her to their room, so romantic and the tears too.
La loca has finally gone over the edge. The outfit she was wearing was very apropos for her. I will state why at the end of my comment. I am glad her little plan with Bore-us was foiled once and for all. That super sized pie cart so broad sided her and she never saw it coming. Can't beleive she told Luci the truth about taking her bebe, I really never thought that she would.Amazing, the truth is starting to come out, there isn't much time left though, now if only Frigid would give up that bracelet already!
Even though the Torreslanda children don't really want to have much to do with their mother, they are still concerned about her health, that was surprising to me. Max too, he looked like he was at his wits end. I agree with what you said about Dr. Hauser, Anita. So spot on. I too liked the idea of Dr. Hauser and Padre Honesto comparing notes.

Now on to the apparel of Rosa la loca. When I lived in Sicily, I went to alot of churches and shrines while I was there. I loved the arcitecture of the buildings and even a church in Messina that had a clock works with rotating figures of Angels and Saints. Any way, there is a shrine in Tindari, very close to Teramina, in Sicily. It is a shrine to the Black Madonna and there is a pentient day. Pentients I saw that day, were wearing the very same outfit, on their knees, climbing the hill to the shrine. It is their way to be forgiven for sins, whatever they are. I recognized the outfit la loca was wearing as soon as I saw it. I am sure it is also worn for other reasons.

I laughed when Lorenzo said the new apartment only had a bed. Dude. it's your wedding night and your both virgins. Stick with the basics for now and you can inaugurate the dining room in month 2.

I don't think Dr Hauser was being dismissive; she quotes a basic truth. The problem is that she only knows what Roselena wanted her to know. She never witnessed the deeply destructive actions and we have to wonder whether Roselena ever told her about kidnapping Luci. We certainly can't imagine her admitting to kidnapping Luci's baby.

A masterpiece Anita! Thanks for all your recaps. Your retelling of the wedding was perfect and really highlighted how beautiful it was ( well except for that one interruption). And may I echo the dislike of watching Gagme and her fleecer sliming all over each other. These writers do like their contrasts--wedding versus, well whatever you want to call it.
I'll just say that if I was much younger, I would want Lorenzo or Pato wrapped in a red bow and put under my tree for Christmas. (I may have to fight you instead for CL.) I just love those two actors together, and when he teared up at the apartment...yeah, so did I. Wonderful moment.

Anita, you saved the best for last. Simply spectacular. Your work on this novela has been fantastic. Great humor and fun - your words flowed seamlessly. The vocabulary list and embedded were sensational. Your sense of style was evident in your perfect description of the wedding dresses.

Hannah looked beautiful and Lorenzo very handsome. More importantly, they looked very in love and happy. Too bad Rosa nearly ruined the moment for them.
When Lor teared up when they were in their apartment, I did too. It was such a sweet moment and showed how long he had waited/hoped for this moment.
Urban- Lorenzo came to D.F. as a teen and even though he had some flirtations with those maids and some other girls, it was pretty clear that he wasn't going any further than that with them. Hannah had his heart. So yes, I think he was a 23 year old virgin. Very sweet that it was both of their first times.

Rosa should be locked up; she is dangerous to self and society. Max has enough dinero to get her into a facility that can actually do some good... although Roselena never would accept that she was mentally ill.
Anyone remember Beatrice Arthur's Maude? She had a great line someone should be saying to Roselena: "God will get you for that."
As for whether her guilt is real, I'm more inclined to think that Roselena is now being motivated by fear. Fear of the isolation that awaits her.

Oh this was such a good episode! I just love it when important things are happening in every scence. And the recap was fabulous.
I am so disgusted by Gala--they are doing a great job making her look crass and trashy. At the beginning she really looked pretty sophisticated...like a lady which clearly she is not!

Anna, so true about Gala looking trashier and less 'classy' now than ever... good thing for her to have turned out such an 'experienced business executive' (NOT!!!!). Yikes, Emaire, I forgot about Bor-ass. Wonder if they will even bother showing his reaction to finding out Janna is already married. Frankly, give him ten seconds and send him off with what's her face--former friend of Janna's. Or if he shows his face, NOW Lorenzo can deck him good if he threatens him or his wife.(that sounds nice).
Though I'm dreading some character wrap-ups, I am looking forward to the slap fest with Luce and Gagme. daisynjay, as much as i want to see Bore-Us reaction to the wedding of Janah, i don't think he deserves even a second more of screen time, so i won't miss him. last two eps are better spent in the characters we do care about.
ANITA...back now from teaching class and had a little more time to savor your recap...particularly loved your description of Aldo pulling a fast one on tio Max...the "como YOU digo" was great. He's learned the con game all too well...and we see a shady but lucrative future for our feckless lad.

We certainly went to Crazytown last night. For a second there i though Rosa, God's Enforcer, had decided she was Jesus Christ with her penitent robe and her hair hanging down. Saw those a lot when i lived in Spain during Easter. All she needed was to be dragging a cross over her shoulder as she crashed the wedding.
I couldn't help feeling sorry for Max when we got the first shot of the wedding. He loves Jana and there he was not going to be at his only daughter's wedding. But thank God Aldo came through and blabbed and Papa got to the wedding and let her know it was still a secret. Very touching as was his later talk with her. Got me teary eyed.

OT:David Ostrosky, as Agustin de Corsa in Alborada was the dad of the sick wife of Luis... he was murdered by Gasca since he could tell about Luis' origin, he would have recognized the scar on the leg, so Dona Juana had Gasca kill him. Later on it turns out AdeC was the brother of the bishop so Gasca was executed for that murder.
ITA that Maximino's hilites in the novela are DEFINITELY his one on one conversations with his children... i remember when Rod learned about RE giving Luci to Paz, he came back and had an emotional convo with Max in the conference room in TL offices. I also recall a few convos with Pato, and of course the one last night with Janah where he said 'maybe it was not the best way to do it but what is important is to do what your heart tells you to'.
I knew Chuy would give Chelo an earful and make him see reason.
I loved Jana's wedding dress. It was so cute on her. Thank heavens their moving up the wedding worked.
I think Conny, Max & Mati have known for years that Rosa was loco. They either accepted that she was an nutcase or didn't think her condition was so bad. I think Conny, Max & Mati have known for years that Rosa was loco. They either accepted that she was an nutcase or didn't think her condition was so bad. Will be interesting to see if Rosa goes off to the funny farm...where life is beautiful all the time (sorry had to use the lyrics to that old song).

Speaking of money-hungry daughter: girl if a guy is always taking you to a hotel for your afternoon delight, if that doesn't raise a red flag regarding the guy..hello!!!! Once Mirko gets that signature, buh bye money..and NYC hotel...and NYC bank account. And that'll be the end of Gagme & Fernanda's gal pal friendship.

Emarie--About hormigas, I think the saying refers to those big black ants. Don't know why they would be singled out, since those teeny tiny ones that get into your sugar & cereal are worse. Our English version might be 'everything is looking pretty bleak' or black right now. Somehow, the Spanish saying is much more 'colorful' despite the color of the ants.
UA--I love the idea of Wedding Interrumptuses...can you add Near Misses? Does ENDA count when the bridegroom gets shot and another one takes his place?
How could we forget El Tal, when Mariana reappears at Pedro and Camila's wedding. They got through the church ceremony but not the civil one, so they were half 'n half married.
Montecristo had one, Laura and her son were kidnapped while Santiago was on the beach with the cura waiting for her.

Also, we haven't had a good non-religious villain since Fina (although Hissidora in AB is in the running). Bernarda and Roselena have both been religious fanatics acting in the name of the Deity to justify their evil deeds. Bernarda was worse because she killed people.

If they don't do something about her now all three of them should go to the looney bin with her.

Anita, remember in CME Fina shot both the groom and bride to prevent her husband from marrying Fer's mother... so that is one more 'wedding interruptus' option.
In Pasion de Gavilanes, the groom was knocked, kidnapped and then almost raped to prevent him from marrying the bride... even though we are not talking about the wedding day yet.
On another novela (won't say the name to not spoil it for some folks watching the reruns now) we had another bride kidnapping at the end.

and of course in abismo we had one wedding stopped by a shooting, and another stopped by a kidnapping at gunpoint... so it had more than its share. in the previous version of that the kidnapping scene on horseback inside or outside the church was also used.

The Jana/Lorenzo apartment scene was very touching last night, and the actors played it perfectly. Lorenzo with tears in his eyes couldn't believe that his dream had come true. I'm sure that after five years in Italy, Jana felt the same way. what a beautiful part of the novela and it wasn't over done-just perfect.

Although it seems fitting for Gala and Julie to lose all their money, it doesn't seem quite fair that Fernanda should receive the same punishment as those two. Even though she's known most of the bad they've done, they are the ones who are really evil. Hope there's more in store for them.
Also, a couple of small notes re-the vocab. A moño is a hair bow. Alexia was running around yelling only ñoños (wimps, whiners) wear moños. That's why Luci teased Rod and told him to put it on himself. LOL
And "nadie me da la cara" was actually "nadie me ve la cara" - "dar" la cara means to face someone, or stand up to someone; "ver" la cara means nobody puts one over on me/makes a fool out of me. The complete saying is usually "nadie me va a ver la cara de idiota/tonto/menso."

Anon at 6:37. I wish I had known this earlier. I didn't think Rod was going to put Alexia's hair in a chignon (my dictionary shows its age, I guess). I'll see to the changes for posterity. Thank you.
Well, in my dictionary, it says moña = ribbon, or bow. and moño = bun. So maybe the closed captions had it wrong, if it was written moño...since it's actually moña. Not the first time the captions have been a wee bit off.
