Por ella soy Eva #114 12/28/12: Day of the Innocents

Or: Day of the Lippy, Cheating Children

Mexico, Spain, and many other countries commemorate a very grisly event on December 28. The Day of the Innocents, as it is known, is a day of pranks and practical jokes, not unlike April Fools' Day.

This episode could not have aired on a more appropriate day.

Rewind: Helena, who has just admitted to still having feelings for Juan, gives Eva another speech about all the deceitful things Juan did. She's worried he'll trick her again. Eva defends him, saying he suffered for her love. "What if he's making a big sacrifice for you? What if he's doing something that could be misinterpreted, just to be near you?"

Helena is confused. But just as Eva is about to clarify what she means, she is interrupted by a ringing cell phone. (I keep telling telenovela characters that they don't have to answer their phone every time it rings, but they never listen. Too bad I don't have their cell phone numbers!) Helena has to leave. She thanks Eva for being such a good listener and asks her to keep this all to herself.

Later, Juan tells Mimi he was about to tell Helena everything. Again, Mimi tries to talk him out of it. Mimi thinks it would be a big mistake for Juan to reveal that he's Eva (or vice versa) as long as Helena's still angry with him. But he wants to win her back first. Then he'll tell her that he's been at her side all along, looking out for her, as Eva. (Really? He sees no flaw in this plan?)

Silvia meets with a lawyer to initiate divorce proceedings. She has two options: She can do an "express divorce" which would take a few months to sort out, but it'll happen even if Bastardo doesn't cooperate at all. Or she and Bastardo can file for divorce together, uncontested. Then they'd have to attend three hearings, after which it would be all done; but Bastardo would have to go along with that. Silvia doesn't think he will.

And then, as a separate matter, there is the question of how to split the loot. Silvia says the only common property they share is the house. It's in her name, but she wants him to have it. He can keep everything. She just wants to start from scratch. (Helena spaces out, fidgets, and frowns at her engagement ring.)

Pluto reminds Renato (who's wearing a pink scarf today) that he, Pluto, is the one who recommended him for the position as Adriano's assistant and asks if Renato has any useful intel. Renato tells him about the new benefit programs Eva has established to help single mothers and older employees. Enraged, Pluto makes a beeline for Adriano's house to complain. What else might she be doing behind their backs? It's going to cut into their profits. Adriano does not share Pluto's concern. It's Eva's right as a partner in the company, and he feels only admiration for her. Pluto grinds his teeth.

Carmen senses that the end is near and summons Eugenia to her bedside. (Carmen doesn't want to see Modesto just yet.) She apologizes for messing up Eugenia's marriage. She begs Eugenia to find her son, Luis. She and Modesto had a big falling-out with him a while back, and that's PART of the reason they haven't heard from him and he won't take their calls. The other part of the reason is that they turned their backs on him when he needed them. But the good news is, she has Luis's phone number, so he won't be hard to find. The bad news is that she suddenly has some kind of painful flare-up and isn't able to give Eugenia Luis's phone number.

Meanwhile, Modesto gets home and grills the poor maid as to Eugenia's whereabouts. She's not supposed to tell, but eventually he gets it out of her that Eugenia went to Puebla. Claudia overhears and assumes she only went there to give Carmen some grief. Modesto tells the brat not to talk that way about his wife. She replies, "Your REAL wife is my mother! Not that... señora!" He tells her to go to her room. She tries to call her mother at home, but there's no answer.

Eva goes to the hospital in Puebla. Eugenia asks her to find Modesto and Luis. Then Modesto shows up and greets them with the warm affection one would expect from... oops, no, he just grumbles "what are you two doing here?" He's annoyed when Eugenia asks about Luis. Eva chews Modesto out for alienating his son. (Ha!) Modesto says he'll take care of finding Luis and tells them to go home.

Helena struggles to explain her parents' divorce to Lalito, but says they were surely in love when they got married. Lalito asks Helena if she loves Plutarco. "Pluto is a good man," she replies evasively. She chuckles nervously and tries to distract him by making faces. Lalito plays along, but doesn't seem completely reassured by her answer.

Kevin and Jennifer give their parents the cold shoulder at the dinner table. Marcela tries to break the ice by asking them about school. Kevin reveals that some of his classmates are paying him to do all the work on their group assignments. Marcela scolds him for cheating. "Didn't we teach you to earn things with hard work?" (Heeey, doesn't math count as hard work?) Then Fernando opens his big dumb mouth and says "when I was your age I used to bag groceries at the market." (Did he really? Or did he just watch his girlfriend do it while he made paper airplanes?) Kevin and Jennifer retort, "We know you're lying - what you did at work was worse. We know Dad was fired for stealing!" For his own part, Fernando can only say that Rebeca set him up and he was a fool. "Nobody is perfect," Marcela tells them. She does the rest of the talking, trying to convince the kids to respect their father. Jennifer asks her mother how can she defend Fernando after getting upset over Kevin's homework scam and punishing Jennifer for every little thing. Then Fernando tells them to respect their mother. The kids leave the room. Marcela and Fernando continue to argue: Fernando neglected to tell the kids that he had done something wrong.

Distraught, Jennifer places a vulnerable phone call to her slimy boyfriend. He swears that he totally loves her, and promises to prove it soon. Meanwhile, Fernando and Marcela are both frustrated that the kids don't respect him. He thinks they should respect him because he's their father, but Marcela knows it's because he is unable to earn their respect. And if he doesn't find a job or otherwise find a way to be the head of the family in two weeks, "lots of things are going to change in this house." She will always put her children before him.

Rebeca comes home to find Onesimo soaking in her precious hot tub. There are candles, flowers, and refreshments, and he's holding a photo of her, which she immediately confiscates. She has a grossed-out hissy fit. He coolly says he's not so happy with her lately, either. She's been a bad girl! "Get out of my tub right now!" Rebeca screeches. He begins to emerge from the soapsuds. "No no no no no!" She tosses him a tiny washcloth to cover up his sad little bits and pieces (menudencias). Instead, he invites her into the tub for a beer and a chat. It seems they have some things to discuss: for example, he knows she and Pluto have been at it again. So far, he stops short of blackmailing her; but when she threatens to call the police on him, he reminds her that he knows some things about her that might interest them. Then she accuses him of blackmailing her and threatens to tell Pluto. He reminds her that he has proof that she tried to poison Pluto.

Finally Onesimo agrees to leave, but mentions in passing that he knows where Pluto stashed the millions he stole. NOW he has Rebeca's attention!

Santi comes home to a cold, dark apartment: no electricity! He goes to a bar and tries to pick up a woman. At first it looks as though he's going to get lucky, but when his credit card is refused, the woman loses interest. Offended, Santi rants about how women care about nothing but expensive things. The bouncer throws him out.

Eugenia and Eva return to Eugenia's house. Eugenia thinks she can get Luis's number from Claudia, but isn't sure how to ask without making Claudia suspicious. Eva urges her to let Modesto take care of finding Luis; it's his duty. But Eugenia feels it's her duty because Carmen asked her. Eugenia doubts that Modesto will find Luis or tell Claudia what's happening.

Next day, Claudia overhears Eugenia telling Juan on the phone that Modesto hasn't been able to find Luis "and I don't think he cares much." Claudia is actually silent for a beat, but then she recovers and demands to know what is going on. "Moments like these require calm," Eugenia replies, which only upsets Claudia more. She thinks maybe they all had a big fight because Modesto is finally leaving Eugenia to live with Carmen. HA! Genie says she just can't tell her yet, but she needs to find Luis. Claudia won't give him up until she knows what's happening, and Eugenia thinks she should hear it from Modesto, so...

Good morning! Silvia lets her hair down. We know from experience that a new hairstyle in a TN is proof of a permanent attitude change, so unless Eduardo grows himself a ponytail I think it's really the end of that relationship.

Helena notices that Lalito never unpacked the medal he won at the science fair. He says it's because he didn't win it the same way he won the others. "It's about Plutarco," he finally admits. He won the science fair by cheating.

Eugenia desperately tries to get her husband to tell his own daughter what's going on, but he is his usual useless douchebaggy self, and Claudia the eavesdropper overhears Genie say that Claudia has the right to know. Now Claudia knows something's really wrong. But she still refuses to give up Luis's phone number. She doesn't trust Eugenia because "you're sick in the head." So, Eugenia ends up having to tell her about Carmen. But she also manages to get Luis's cell phone number.

At GI, Renato tells Eva that Adriano has put him at her disposal to help with the benefit programs for the female employees. Then he wanders out on her while she's in mid-sentence. Distracted, Eva leaves her handbag on his desk.

Eugenia calls Juan to give him Luis's phone number. She wants to tell Modesto that she and Claudia are on their way to Puebla; while she's taking care of that, she wants Eva to call Luis. Eva is already dialing when Renato comes in with Eva's misplaced handbag. Renato's cell phone rings. He looks at the caller ID with surprise. "Miss Eva, are you calling me?" Eva asks him, "Are you Luis?" "Luis Renato, but only my family calls me Luis. Is something wrong?"

Best wishes for a healthy and happy 2013!!

Will Eva out herself to Luis? Find out Tuesday!

1. No episode Monday night.

2. The sentence Eva started last night ("Helena, I-") is never finished, thanks to a ringing cell phone. I keep telling telenovela characters that they don't have to answer their phone every time it rings, but they never listen. (If only I had their cell phone numbers!)

Julie thanks so much, can't wait to read the rest of what you will put up, but I have to say, Yay, I just knew it was Renato. He kept asking questions about JC from the first day he worked at G.I. and wouldn't let go. Eva was so speechless, I thought she would revert to JC for just a second. I hate how they left us hanging till TUESDAY of all things.

I look forward to your more detailed recap, Julie. There are always things I miss and you recappers help so much! Muchas Gracias!

I think you mentioned it being the day of the Holy Innocents. We observed this day back in my Catholic school days . (Or as we said back in Philly, 'Caflic' school).

Apparently, this is seen as a sort of Spanish April Fools Day because when they were filming the early episodes of PESE, Lucero played a practical joke on Jaime Camil and got him good. It was 12/28/2011 when she did this and at the end of the joke she screamed 'feliz day of the innocents' ...sorry about my spanglish....Someone posted it on YouTube and it got over 250k hits...but then got taken down and reposted again and again.

http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=FhtJDqbGJFg

Back to tonight's episode. It was great to hear the Mexican chipmunk laugh again when Helena was teasing her son. But at the school bus stop, I'm pretty sure he told his mom that it was PLuty who told him to cheat at the science fair and she wasn't laughing when she heard that!! Gracia Dio!! It is about to hit the fan sooner than I thought it would! YAy! Feliz dia de los innocents!!

Madelaine - YEAH!! I really thought Renato (or should I say LUIS) was going to hear JC's voice for the very first time.

I wonder if JC will take Renato into his confidence. (Under the circumstances, it seems appropriate... but then, shouldn't Helena be the next person he tells?)

I'm going to be on pins and needles until 20 hours past New Year's.

Sorry...forgot to put my handle on my post at 12:24 am ....and it's still 12/28 back here in LA.... Gertie

Thanks, Gertie. I went to a Catholic school also, but the nuns were all French (or French-Canadian) and I guess the French don't do the pranking. I do remember them telling us about the massacre, but not the jokes!

Well Julie, you get to recap a heckuva show tonight. I look forward to your rendition.

Hey Gertie! Like you I grew up in SE PA (50 mi fm Philly), and like you I settled in CA (northern), and like you (I gather) I'm a gringa who watches TNs. In fact I learned Spanish via TNs. I wonder what else we have in common. An intense appreciation for really good socks? A strong aversion to rain in your face? Hair that has retained its natural color after half a century?

Hi Paula H., my PA sister, we have all those things in common! But I am relatively new to the telenovela scene. I decided about a year ago that this would be a great way to learn Spanish but I use Rosetta Stone too.. I didn't expect to become so addicted to the novellas...but I did!!. I made a pact with two of my bilingual, Spanish -speaking GF's at work that I would attempt to verbally recap one capitulo per day ...2 sentences per day en espanol and present to them each day. They have thoroughly enjoyed it ....sometimes at my expense. But it's all good for a laugh and learning. They claim not to watch the novellas ("my mom and grand mom watch those, but I don't" ) so they say...but they know way too much about the background of each actor...so I think they are picking up an awful lot from "mom and abuela." Every once in a while we sit down and watch one together and they shush me when I interrupt to ask what's going on...it's hilarious! Gertie

Yay! and Yay! Luis Renato is outed -- and so is Pluti.

What a lot of action in one episode. I'm glad we know for sure that Renato is Luis. There is a lot of trouble ahead I think between him & JC -- but he & Eva may actually manage an accord between him & his parents.

I was so glad that Lalito came out with the story about the "trampa" at the science fair. Little by little Pluti shining armor is being tarnished. Can the" manches" on his shiny suits be far behind?

We saw for real the source of Claudia's nastiness when she told Modesto that Carmen is his real wife not "esa mujer." She thinks that they'd all be a happy family if only Eugenia were out of the way. How is she going to react to her mother's crisis?

And Onesimo in the jacuzzi! Too funny! All his threats about "cositas" he knew about Rebecca got him nowhere --- but he sure got her attention when he told her that he knows where to find the millions that Pluti stole.

And Jennifer! Oh no! Don't believe that sleaze.....

Ah, yes, the closet TN watchers. In Mexican culture, which is hyper-sensitive about social class, the perception is that only the lower classes watch TNs. To admit that you watch indicates that you are low class, so they all deny watching except children and field workers. So they all say, "I never watch," then they comment on specific details of the show. I think that's why Camil often inserts the joke in his roles; his character says, "I never watch TN's." He's said it not only in Eva, but also in Fea and Tontas.

Have you explored dichos in your language study? Consider memorizing a few useful ones, then throw them into conversation with your bilingual coworkers. Dichos are so practical, I'm sure you'll find appropriate opportunities to use them. Your friends will get a good laugh, and it will earn you points with them - "she's one of us."

What a restless episode! I loved: Adri telling Plutarco Eva could do whatever she wanted and watching Plutaraco seeing the money flying away; Oneisimo with the bottles of beer on the rocks in the ice bucket and saying "we nacos also have feelings."; Eva/JC finding out the identity of his half brother; the kids confronting Fernando with the truth and Marcela telling him the kids will always come first before him; Lalo telling him mom about what Plutarco put him up to. I didn't love: Santi so pathetic at the bar; Sllvia willing to give the Bastardo everything in the divorce settlement just so she doesn't have to deal with him; Eugenia being caught in the middle between the Bad Seed, Carmen and Modesto; Jennifer finding solace with that snake in the grass Daniel. Instead of praying, maybe Rebecca should just get her locks changed.

Julie, thank you so much for this recap.

So glad Renato is confirmed to be the half-brother we've been waiting for.

I'm starting to wonder about how and even IF Eva's true identity can ever be revealed to one and all in this storyline. There are so many people who might find her Eva- facade unforgiveable, and I'm not sure I can bear to see her beau hurt so badly. Maybe Eva could just "vanish"..... in some nice way. This leads me to the "convent" option I've sought in past difficulties in other TN's. At any rate, Helena seems to be building quite the case against Juan Carlos for his past charades so it's going to take some big change of heart to get past that. Maybe Plutie's evil ways will help along those lines. This continues to be one my all-time favorites and I am so grateful for the wonderful recappers who do such a marvelous job of capturing and conveying the delights of of Soy Eva.

Happy New Year one and all!

I also want to thank Julie for her recap and explaining about the Day of the Innocents. Gertie, I found the Lucero prank from last year on You Tube and it was a hoot. Thanks!

Jarifa

Again: Sorry for the delay. The full version is up now. I am still amazed by all the stuff that was in that episode!

It seems that Helena still doesn't really have the whole story about Pluto and the science fair. Lalito said he cheated and said it had something to do with Pluto but that's all he's said so far. Odds are that he'll either refuse to tell her any more, or he'll try to tell her but her #$@& phone will start ringing. Either way, she'll be left to connect the dots on her own, and she'll connect them wrong. She'll assume that Pluto knew about the cheating and disapproved, but agreed to keep Lalito's secret from Helena, or something goofy like that.

Oh so happy that Renato is Luis and not Daniel. I was getting worried these last few episodes. Maybe now that JC knows Renato is his brother, he can down to why the boy needs to wear a scarf all the time while the women are fine in sleeveless dresses. He needs to get to a doctor.

Now how do we get rid of Daniel?

Kelly

I think parents of teenage girls all over the planet would pay good money to find out how to get rid of the Daniel types!

Julie, thanks for this splendid recap. Well, isn't Modesto just a hum dinger?? Hate the way he treats Eugenia, but glad he stuck up for her, for once to Claudia. Glad Claudia, for once, did the right thing and gave Eugenia that phone number. Modesto is an idiot and glad Eugenia told Claudia finally. I wish Modesto's face would just freeze in that ugly grimace.

Glad Lalito told Helena about the cheating at the Science Fair and who told him it was ok to cheat. Pluti!!! Maybe now she will open her eyes.

Loved Adri's attitude toward Pluti about those women that Eva rehired. Good fro Adri. Sucks to be Pluti, lol.

Glad Silvia is moving ahead with the divorce and also how she is lookin' really good. I really hope she does the Express Divorce.

That hot tub scene with Onesimo was sooo funny, and with Rebe praying to the Virgincita right in front of Onesimo, too funny. I wonder what she is gonna do about Onesimo.

Poor Santi, he doesn't have a thing now, and I wonder when he won't have his apartment either.

Fern won't own up to anything unless he is forced too, like he did with the kids, and I loved the image you wrote about Julie, about Fern's girlfriend bagging groceries while he made paper airplanes, lol. I like the stand Marcela is taking too. Good for her.

Can't stand Daniel, Jennifer's boyfriend, he is so slimy, I so don't want her to get hurt by this slimy guy.

Julie- I loved the full recap. I had a good chuckle about Fern's girlfriend bagging groceries and Bastardo growing a ponytail. LOL!

I'm glad my theory has come to fruition and Renato is indeed JC's brother. Tough times ahead for Renato as he deals with his family issues, his mother's illness, his family's acceptance, and coming out of the closet.

I am so tired of Modesto and Fernando and their inactivity. What will it take for these two to get their crap together?!

This is my first tn so I have a question, do they always end well? No matter what, can we look forward to JC and Helena together?

Just before this capitulo aired I was wondering if the science fair story was just filler. I was so happy to see it come around again. The glare created by a Pluti-suit can only hide the truth for so long.

Finally, I have been wondering the same way as Dona Felipa; the only good end for Eva may be her death! How could Ari ever recover being been in love with JC/Eva? He would be so humiliated. How could Helena ever trust him? JC as Eva would be hated, but in death Eva would be loved forever, even by JC if she brings Helena back to him...just thinking.

Sue in Florida

Welcome Sue...they pretty much always have happy endings for the protagonists. I agree with those who say that Although it would be hard on Adri, it would be best if Eva just disappeared once and for all. It would other wise be both heart breaking and humiliating for Adri if he found out that Eva was really Juan Carlos. JC was like a son to him. Gertie

My condolences, Sue.
The first croissant I ever tasted was in Paris. I thought they were all that good. Every one I've eaten since then has been a disappointment.

The first telenovela I ever watched was "La fea más bella." I thought they were all that good. Every one I've seen since then has been a disappointment.

The first telenovela you ever watched is Eva. I regret to inform you that you can expect a lifetime of disappointment.

Just kidding. Sorta'.

Doña F & Sue, you make a good point. TN's love mirror plots. Eva was born out of Juan's death. Maybe Juan will be reborn out of Eva's death. Which makes me wonder: will it be 9 months from Juan's car crash to his reappearance? And his transformation during all this stage is his gestational stage? Yeah, I'm overthinking this, huh?

Paula H., I agree with you about LFMB. There was something really special about that telenovela. I can say it was the first telenovela I finished. I started watching it shortly after starting to watch Eva and literally devoured all 300 episodes. Besides a very satisfying plot, slapstick humor at its best, and sympathetic characters, I loved how they incorporated other famous figures from current Mexican culture and music. For me Angelica Vale will always be Lety and Jaime Camil, in spite of his spectacular portrayal in Eva, will ALWAYS be don Fernando. Thank goodness for streaming video from Univision and You Tube.

Jarifa

Sue, I'm on the fence as to whether Adri should find out that Eva is Juan. However, if Helena doesn't find out, that will be a first for a telenovela as far as I know.

The heroine has to find out EVERYTHING. Then she gets angry and gives up on him "forever." (And sometimes almost marries another guy.) But then she changes her mind. Always. I can't think of any exceptions.

However, I do hope we get at least one incident where Juan and Eva both have very important appointments at the same time that they can't reschedule or cancel, with lots of hurried costume changes to keep both appointments. I know it's a cliche, but I don't care. It's one of my very favorite comedy shticks and I loved it when Angelica Vale did it in LFMB. I bet Camil's been wanting to do it too.

Julie- Eva and JC almost had the same appointment a couple epi's ago, where Helena was taking JC to "meet" Eva, but Adri was in the lobby and JC ended up hiding behind the car outside and he suddenly disappeared. It was sooo funny. I too would like to see JC and Eva having an appointment at the same time.

I am liking Adri so much now, I hope he never finds out that JC is Eva, I really think that would be the end of him, but Adri needs to grow still and his attitude still needs to change in some things. Eva has already been able to hire those fired women back, despite Adri and Pluti's attitude, so maybe Eva can change Adri's mind about being a homophobe. Not only is JC as Eva changing his own attitude about things he is changing the men around him too.

You know... at least Adriano IS growing. After watching Fernando and Bastardo all these months, it's nice to know that some guys don't literally have to live as women in order to understand them as human beings!

Excellent recap, Julie. Lots of key events going on in this episode. I was satisfied to see Renato revealed as Luis. Liked your characterization of Modesto as "his usual useless douchebaggy self."

I'm beginning to wonder if Eva can ever reveal her true identity and still maintain her relationships with people. I tend to agree with those who think she needs to disappear or die.

I really enjoy this TN, both characters and plot.
