NovelaMaven: Thank you for starting my day with a smile, I so enjoyed every word of this delightful recap.

Part sweet: "It means you are in love with José Ángel"; part scary: "Bea strides along the street oblivious to the beast tracking her"; part sour: "Cris has been nursing her fury". All blended together to make a savory, satisfying concoction.

Perhaps Nikki is unkind and thoughtless because she has no real friends. They are all vain, vapid and shallow.

Even though Guillo was rather "a brat", it's obvious Salsero is trying to do everything in proper fashion to woo Bea. I half expected him to get up and start dancing at the restaurant. He and Jean Marie getting their groove on in the kitchen was adorable. I do not think Frankie is going to take kindly to DWS's friendship with Bea, especially when the truth comes out about the kidnapping (which seems bound to happen at some point).

I can't blame the priest for telling JA to leave his job. It's obvious he is bewitched and bewildered. It really is sound advice - JA would never forgive himself if things went too far with Vicky. However, things seem to be spiraling out of control for poor Cris so she may be the one doing the leaving.

I was on the edge of my seat, waiting to see if JA and Vicky would kiss on the couch but was surprised (and relieved) when they did not return to that scene.

Let's bring someone in for Polita. Someone who will love her and appreciate her. It will have to be someone fantastic to be able to take her mind off Frankie though...

Vicky and JA now are acknowledging their feelings at long last. The question is: what (if anything) are they going to do about it?

The main problem with Nikki and her ilk … er … friends is they all have way too much spare money and time on their hands.
Dear Vikki, WHY isn't your little skinny anti-albóndiga made to work or do something constructive with her spare time? Okay? Captas? ;-)

I really thought JA and Vikki were going to kiss. eek. After that long, damp crying scene of JA's and the priest, he is right back to the temptation. MAJOR eye-roll.

And, really, that final scene with the acronymic poem . . . GAH! Another major eye-roll moment. Are the writers jumping the shark???

 

NovelaMaven~~~~ Thanks so much for this gem of a recap. Wonderful start to finish. Uh oh, Leo now knows where Betty works. I don't like that, but with Dances hanging out at the front desk, Dances will make short work of Leo, but then again, Dances will probably need help. Look at the times before that Dances didn't do well : )

Ah, Ms Vikki and Angel. I too thought that they would kiss, they were so close on that sofa. And now Angel heard the poem and what Tomi said. Uh, oh, the poor man is SO confounded. But he was listening at doors, ya know, like they usually do when they aren't supposed to. Now what will he do.

Loved the takedown of the Fornicator (great name Novela Maven) Loved the headlock that the Angel put him in, lol. Fornicator will sure make lots of trouble for Ms Vikki and use Nikki to get his way, oh and the shares too.

I hated that Polita heard what Nikki said and Polita sobbing her poor little heart out. Words are so cruel. I am glad that Guzmi was there for her. I too hope Polita becomes a star with her singing and finds someone of her own. Laughed at what you said at the end, about Guzmi filing a sexual harrassement suit against Polita.

Ms Vikki needs to look around her again, and especially about Nikki. She is so caught up in her own problems she is forgetting Nikki again. Nikki has fallen back into her game playing and now Polita is the target. I wonder what in the world she is going to do to Polita now?

I know that I'll get flack for this but Cris is DEAD TO ME. Really, Lili is of age and can choose to do what she wants. I hate the way Cris is pushing her around. Lili has already told Cris how she feels and what she beleives, if Cris wants to go visit Candelaria, then let her go. Don't force your daughter to choose sides, jus' sayin'.

Kendho sure has Fornincator in her clutches. Can't wait to see how that turns out.

And finally Betty and Salsero, how cute are they? I too am afraid of what will happen when Guzmi finds out about the nefarious plots of Kendho's that Salsero participated in. I hope somehow Salsero is redeemed.
 

NovelaMaven- I started giggling just reading the title. And really, who knew that in addition to their original reference to the male anatomy, avocadoes can also make men act like the male anatomy too...

I hate that Anibal is putting business ahead of his daughter's dignity and happiness. I'm not surprised, but it's maddening. I'm so glad Vicky is sticking to her guns, but Odette would be a real threat to have as a 20% owner of the company.

I would like to contrast how Vicky is trying to leave Nicki out of the mess between her and Nelson (I don't think she's neglecting Nicki), and how Cris is trying to make Lili pick sides. Just tacky.

Doris- You think this tn may only just now be jumping the shark? Have you seen this tn from the beginning? It jumped the shark long ago. That's why it's so entertaining!

I don't think Vikki is precisely ignoring Nikki, but she hasn't told Nikki about the seperation from the Furminator Fornicator and I hope she does soon, before he does.

So many of the characters are choosing to do the wrong things that pointing them out almost seems...well..pointless...

However, I seem to derive a bit of perverse pleasure in pointing out the flaws I observe in Saint Vikki, sooo:

I think we all agree that the gold cross was a bad idea, but her instructing JA to keep Nelson out of her room was one of her worst.
Then when the predictable struggle took place between her two men, she regally emerges and shouts ENOUGH! Please lady.

I think that Polita is much more hurt by the fact that Guzman has made it clear that they are just friends than by any of Nikki's insults.

Sorry, but I think the meal with Salsero was a huge mistake. I like Betty and him as a couple but not until Leo is banished to the Land of Gone.

I'm dreading Nikki's plans for Polita...it may be time to bring out the bags.

Absolutely love the Spanish notations and your writing style. Today I am going to start a notebook and write them all down.

Yesterday there was a discussion about LLena de Amor, brought up by, I think Julia, but one of the most significant aspects of the plot was that the handsome hunk loved the gal even though she was fat. She disappeared for several years and came back thin; he didn't recognize her, but there was something about her that really attracted him (I know, BIG BEANIE here) and they eventually married. But he had loved her way before she became thin. His friends used to make fun of him for loving a fat girl.

Here comes the Flack.
I still LOVE Chris. I recognize that she has behaved badly, and putting her child in the middle of all this is not good (Nihil-sone tried something similar with Tomasina), and by her actions she is alienating
her man that she loves so much.
However, she is a very emotional, unsophisticated woman. She comes right out with her feelings - speaks her mind to all she meets. She has lived a simple life and has not needed to play games. I worked for 36 years in the education field, and every single day, I came across all sorts of weirdos - from students, to parents, to administrators, etc., and I learned to show up each day with a poker face. Most of us do this. I would have been fired right off the bat if I had said what I was thinking. I rarely let my true emotions show at work and many times in family situations as well, because you can get in trouble anywhere if you are not very diplomatic.

Chris has not learned the art of diplomacy. She shoots from the hip, and this is all she knows.
She has become a victim of her own insecurity. She is consumed by jealousy - practically paralyzed by it. MY HEART ACHES FOR HER. Still, all in all, she's had the vibes from Day #1,
and she is right - no matter how she got to that conclusion.

As long as the church has been brought into this, I learned as a child - "to avoid the near occasions of sin." This was hammered home frequently.

I know we have a TN, so anything we say really has no point or there would be no romance. Right from the beginning Vicky has been too familiar with JA; last night having him sit so close to her on the couch after what all they had just been through was again crossing the borders of professionalism and courting temptation. There is such a thing as keeping ones distance or not invading people's SPACE. So, Vicky has been encouraging this familiarity whether conscious or unconscious all along.

Chris is VERY MUCH ALIVE to me. My heart goes out to her. I feel her anguish.

We can all say that so many characters are making wrong choices, but who knows? It's called life. Don't we all have tons of choices in our lives that we regret?

Frankly, I think Cris has gone around the bend, and the relationship with JA is over, finished, done, ended, terminada. Now Lili will have to make an unfair choice, but she's a strong and wise girl, and she will do what she needs to do. Personally, I want to see JA & Vicki get on with their relationship which is a wonderful combination of very deep friendship and physical attraction. Bravo. More power to them. It will take JA more time than Vicki to realize that his marriage is over, but sooner or later, that will happen. Meanwhile, let's get the Furry Fornicator into the guest room, out of the house, and take Any Balls with him. The sexism of that one is over the top.
 

Thank you, Novela Maven! I love your section headings; they really capture the essense in a hilarious way.

My favorite bit of the episode was when Nikki called Frankie "gusanito" (little worm) instead of Guzmancito. She's a brat, but she's funny. She does need a job and some friends who also have jobs or something to do besides hang around causing trouble.

Vicky must have a great deal of self control to keep from smacking her father.
 

Floridia~~~~ Amiga, I will agree to disagree with you. I understand how you feel about Cris and you are right, she is very unsophiticated. I just hate how she jumps to conclusions and won't listen. That is my problem with her. I liked the Padre here though. It is not the Padre's place to tell the Angel what to do. The Angel must make that decision on his own, and the Padre was right about not being tempted, but I know alot of you are mad cause the Padre didn't tell the Angel to quit his job and move on. That is what the Angel's free will is for. He must decide on his own. The Padre isn't his nanny. Floridia, despite my disagreeing with you about Cris, I do love your point of view.


 

Oh, there was one other thing I wanted to mention about Angel and Cris I thought about, yeah, too much time on my hands. The Angel and Cris have only dated each other. There has never been any mention of Angel having had any other woman but Cris and the same for Cris. There has never been anyone else. With Ms Vikki she had a prior boyfriend before she married the Furry Fornicator. So maybe this is why the Angel is so confounded and confused about having feelings for another woman, no prior experience and the same for Cris too. Now Ms Vikki is more sophisticated and so I think she knows more in this area. Both Angel and Cris are not very sophisticated. Does that make sense? Just a thought.
 

It seems to me that the 20% shares thing is Anibal's problem to fix, and not Vicky's. Anibal was idiot enough to hand over all those shares to Nelson, simply because he was the "right kind" of son-in-law. A man who can be bought by his father-in-law, is simply a man who can be bought-- a man of weak character. Someone who would sell the family's company shares to the highest bidder or to the enemy. And it's not like Vicky hasn't always made it clear that she wouldn't put up with infidelity, like her mom did. Both Nelson and Anibal knew that's where she drew a very clear line.
 

My favorite line was also, "literary equivalent of The Painting." What a marvelous summing up! And thank you so much for sparing us the actual poem. I doubt if it would gain anything in translation.

Carlos, what are the bags for? Are they suitcases for leaving, or airsick bags, or something else?

Madelaine: Excellent, insightful point about JA and Cris' lack of prior, meaningful relationships. I think you hit the nail on the head amiga. They are not very worldly in terms of navigating the rocky roads of romance so makes perfect sense.

And Dona Gringuita, whatever we feel about Cris and her being with or without the angel, ITA "the relationship with JA is over, finished, done, ended, terminada".

And Vivi, yes, Nelson can be bought (great point). And he is so NOT worth it.

About Cris -- others have pointed out that our reactions to the characters are a bit like Rorschach tests (you know, the ink blots that supposedly reveal something about you according to how you interpret them.) Me, I find Cris meddlesome and ill-tempered and in real life I would cross the street to avoid bumping into her. But that may say more about me than about the cartoonish figure in the novela.

I do wonder though -- what if Cristina isn't an innocent victim in the baby switcheroo? (Or is that impossible because of some plot detail I missed early on?)

 

Floridia---Correcto, Correcto, Muy Correcto. My heart bleeds for Christiana also. No she is not highly educated she tells it like it is--shoots from the hip because she knows no other way, but Christiana has lost the most and will loose the most before it's all over. Although she is not highly educated and is a little rough along the edges, she is no dummy. She knows what is going on with her Big Angel and the Senora. She just doesn't know how to fight on a higher more sophisticated level. Anger is the only way she knows how to express the hurt that she has inside her.
Think about it---Victoria is going to loose the Furminator but she is going to gain the Angel and she will still have all her wealth.---Polita with some effert can overcome her weight problem and live happily ever after.---Nikki with a little help/effort can learn to be a nicer, kinder person and will win her Guzmancito.
Who did I miss, well you get the picture. Christina has already lost her Little House on the Prairie with all of her keepsakes, pictures and memories of a lifetime and now she is about
to loose her Angel of twenty years. Yes,I am in the Christana camp and like you, my heart bleeds for her.

Yes, that's our Chris. She's impulsive, she's mad and blind with jealousy and pain, but she's a good woman. She just needs to cool down and rethink the situation.

I never really liked the "I am who I am, I always say what I think, and I don't care about how it affects other people" attitude because I think it's more about immaturity, insensitivity or the lack of proper education (and there are people who simply lack the diplomacy gene, they call it hypocrisy). But it'd be hard to deny that these people are very brave, and their attitude can be really refreshing in certain situations. For example, I love how Chris treats Aníbal and Paula.

And now please let my inner Arriaga/Victoria come out again: I LUUUV the last scene - in spite of The Poem, because that was cringeworthy, I agree on that.

However, that longing but extremely sad expression on Angel's face was interesting and touching. He's attracted to Victoria but the mere thought that she might feel the same way about him makes him depressed. Because he knows this isn't right and he doesn't want anyone to get hurt.

About Llena de amor -- There was a Venezuelan version of this story called Mi Gorda Bella. In the end, the Gorda Bella of the title marries the galán, gains weight with her pregnancy and is once again significantly overweight. But she has learned to carry herself like the beautiful woman she is, she dresses well, and she is fit and well-nourished. And her husband remains madly in love with her. She devotes her life to a foundation that looks after needy children. She becomes quite famous and everyone refers to her -- quite affectionately -- as la gorda bella.

I absolutely adored this ending and I was disappointed that Llena de amor chose the skinny forever route.

LOL, that often happens to me. When one invests so much emotion into certain characters, and sees the good side of them, it's very hard to give up on them. :) Especially when it comes to telenovela characters who are supposed to be either good or bad (with a few exceptions like Salsa Dude), but sometimes they act like huge jerks because that creates drama and drama creates ratings.

I have a simple, paper-bag-worthy policy for these situations: blame everything on the writers. :P

I for one admire Jarocha's (our beloved Mexicana's) command of English. I'm still struggling with the English grammar and vocabulary... but I'll love them forever. :)
 

Hungarian? Wow, Aribeth, that is surprising -- and very impressive. So English (and Spanish) are completely unrelated to your mother tongue.

(I was guessing you were going to say German since I have known several native speakers of that language whose English puts many of us Anglos to shame.)

I agree completely about Jarocha's command of English -- it is remarkable.

And as for your continued struggle with English grammar and vocabulary: I am completely convinced that second (and third and fourth) language acquisition is a life-long process. When you stop learning, you start forgetting and losing ground.

I've been analyzing Nikki for a while and I've realized that she is being a victim of the writing here.

She was the most popular character in the Azteca version, her and her Guzmán. People LOVED that character so much that they quoted her on everyday conversations and her haircut became a trend.

I've seen many blame Eiza here but I think the problem is that they did so many significant changes to Guzmán, Polita and Liliana so she comes off like a big bully most of the time.

In the other version Guzmán was younger (the actor was about a decade younger than Rulli) and less mature. He was a bit of a player and did sleep with Polita and had an ongoing sexual relationship with another character. Polita was not overweight and while she was funny and a good person, she wasn't this innocent dreamer that our Polita represents. Finally, Liliana was nice and all but she had a bite on her when it came to Nikki, it always gave the impression that they were on equal ground even if they weren't.

That Nikki shouldn't have made comments on Guzmán's sex life either but it was at least understandable that she would feel hurt to see him with other women. Over here, everything is on her mind so she looks paranoid because Guzmán behaves like a monk and does nothing but sigh for her at the appropiate times.

I love Rulli's Guzmán but his character really changed their dynamic and put all the mistakes in the development of their relationship on Nikki's shoulders.

My name is Victoria, and I came across this site by accident, thank you so much for coming up with this. I know a lot of Spanish but don't speak it fluently and I watch the show faithfully. This site helps a lot for me to understand parts of the show that I was confused on. Thank you again and keep up the amazing writing.
 

Aribeth: thank you! I do have to say that I think your English is better than mine and I admire your courage in writing recaps in English that not only are good but also hilarious. If that isn't a great command on a language then I don't know what it is.

It always takes me too much time to post and I always cringe when I find mistakes in my paragraphs. The idea of writing a full recap is scary.

Florida - Great analysis on Cris.

Angel and Vickie are in love and the ship has sailed on his marriage to Cris. But I'm a sucker for characters who make me laugh and are unpretentious. That's Cris. She's a wounded woman right now running on angry fumes and not being fair with Lili, but she's not evil. She's said earlier, without resentment, that Lili is her father's daughter. So she's foolish to make Lili choose cause everyone knows what her answer will be. Cris needs to go to her mom's tiny town to lick her wounds and heal, not to get Angel back. Hope Angel doesn't try to talk Cris into staying. He should thank his lucky stars she's not an evil witch claiming to be pregnant, threatening to commit suicide, reminding of his vows and promises, etc. She just wants out of there.

Carlos - You nailed what irks me about Vickie - "instructing JA to keep Nelson out of her room ....then she regally emerges and shouts ENOUGH!" And Angel told her beforehand it was a stupid idea. If/when Angel and Vickie are finally outed as a couple, I wonder if Vickie will regally claim it all started after Cris left him.

So Nikki’s been eating, there are no toilet scenes, and she’s jealous of pleasingly plump Polita. Could Nikki be over bulimia?

I confess that I am charmed by Eiza's acting. She makes the character likeable in spite of all her adolescent pettiness and snobbery. That's not an easy thing to pull off.

Thank you for saying that it takes you some time to compose your posts in English. You are still amazing but you allow me to feel a little better about my pathetic Spanish. I hate making mistakes too -- in any language. (Of course that is a terrible attitude. We need to make mistakes in order to keep learning, right?)

It sure would be nice to think that Nikki is getting over her eating disorder. But somehow I doubt it will be that easy -- not for her and not for us (because frankly, the wretching scenes are just ... well ... wretched.)
 

Really enjoyed the recap.

Guillo was a brat at dinner, but it is totally what a kid that age would do. He wants his Daddy and no matter how much Bea explains that they won't live together any more, he is too young to understand why, especially with that rat feeding him all the nonsense against his mother. It is very scary that Leo knows where Bea works.

So that was it for Nikki's "punishment" for lying about the pregnancy? "I will cut you off, now go to the Hacienda and think about what you did" "Okay, I thought about it" "And?" "I'm going to Europe" "No, please don't" "Okay" - y punto! It reminds me of some mothers who "dare" their child to continue misbehaving. "By the time I count to 3 you'd better ... 1, 2, 2-1/4, 2-1/2, 2-3/4 ..." Nikki was right when she said to Tomasina "sha la la, sha la la, y neta."

Carlos:
Agree that it seemed kind of pointless for Vicki to tell JA not to let Nelson in and then immediately go let him in. Why?
Also agree that Bea's dinner with Salsero was a mistake. When little Guillo lets the cat out of the bag to Leo, he's not going to think about the fact that Felipe and Guillo were there. He'll focus on Bea being out with another man!

Madeline:
Agree that Vicki is more sophisticated than Cris and able to filter her words and actions, but that is precisely why she should be able to set (and keep) certain boundaries when it comes to dealing with JA.

That, plus the references to LldAhas made me wistful for Fedra, though I don't think that I was ever tempted to refer to her as St. Fedra but, as you recall, like St. Vikki, she also had a thing for other women's husbands.

Glad that you've joined in on the discussion here, Jarocha. Nikki is my favorite character. She exudes a selfish innocence. She reminds me a bit of Kristal(LldA), but with a little more depth.

Thanks, NovelaMaven , for the clever recap. I had to turn the set off when I saw Leonardo the Louse skulking behind Bea. Bleeccch. Aribeth and Jarocha ~~~I teach English as a Second Language [writing, reading, speaking, listening] , and I can assure you that you both have quite an amazing command of the language. I admire people who can speak more than one language. The other day, I was in the elevator at the college where I teach , and two young girls were having a very animated conversation that easily flowed back and forth between Arabic to English concerning their parents push to have them marry someone from their own culture. I studied Latin and Fench, but I've forgotten most of what I learned except for a bit of vocabulary. I know quite a few words in Arabic because I've taught many students from the Middle East [Syria, Morocco , Kuwait], but I don't know any grammar and cannot write or read Arabic. My limited Spanish comes from the telenovelas . I've built up some vocabulary, but I can't usually understand what is being said. Hats off to all of you who have mastered a second language. According to research, your brains are benefiting from your acquired skill.

Ah, Carlos. I've missed your sly sense of humor. Okay ???? After teaching many Nikkis at an affluent , suburban high school , I am not a fan of the spoiled and impolite....The Young and the Worthless. [One asked her friend in a stage whisper that our Nikki would have admired, ''Is it proper to wear white in winter?'' as I stood a foot or two away decked all in winter white . Okay ???? Nikki makes my teeth hurt. When my own two daughters got a bit snarly, I always asked them, ''Are you paying the mortgage on this house?...no...Well, then, maybe you should watch your tone of voice and attitude. '' I also had to sometimes remind them..''You're part of this family, but you're not part of this marriage.'' Maybe Miss Vikki should try those lines on Naughty Nikki.

Hola chica! So the deal with The Painting is that Miss Vicki has a portrait of Arriaga on the easel in her studio. It is a nude head and torso and the subject is readily recognizable. She is painting from memory -- he has never posed for her -- and when she isn't working on it, she keeps it covered with a drape cloth.

Predictably, it stirs up trouble when Cris and Nelson see it. But the joke is that it is a HORRIBLE painting. Similarly, The Poem is a HORRIBLE poem. If we want to think of Miss Vicky as an artist, it would be best to see her work in our mind's eye and not look too closely at the image on the flatscreen.

I guess someday I'll remember fastidiar means ruin in Spanish since it has little similarity to the English word. First thought embarazada meant embarrassed but learned that word quickly with all the pregnancies, wanted and unwanted, in these novelas. Thanks for the Spanish translations.

I find it hard to believe Angel would openly cheat on Chrissie though he seems to be sooo tempted to do so. Will Chrissie have to be gotten out of the way somehow (death or institutionalized) for our hero to be with his soulmate? She has to find out Anibal is her father and Vicki her sib. Well, anyway, what a mess.

I'm glad you liked the vocab stuff. But ojo (watch out!) with fastidiar. Its usual or more literal translation is "to annoy"; but in the context of the sentence, it made more sense to translate it as "ruin".

A synonym of fastidiar is molestar, another "false friend."

Coming back to comment after reading the comments.

First off, hola chica to my amiga Sara! I have missed you! And I recall a few days that you thought Big Ed was hotter than Mr. Puppydog Eyes Jorge Salinas?!? (See, I haven't forgotten.) I'd say that they are apples and oranges. Given a choice, I'd take Big Angel as a galán, since he is adorable. Rogelio from LQNPA is too much of a nightmare (even though we all love his puppy dog eyes). As for the actors, they're just too different in type. I refuse to choose! LOL.

Now getting back to this episode and particularly, to Chris. I like Chris. I wasn't sure what to think of her at first, but now I like her, even though I think she's off the rails. I hope that she and Big Angel can pick up the pieces, but I fear it'll never be the same again. Even if Big Angel were to move out to the country with Chris and never see Vicki again, it'll still never be the same. But I want to see them try.
 

Elvira- tho I am enjoying Big Ed's charms I haven't forgotten that Jorge can tickle my toes, too. I for one anxiously await the estreno of Qué Bonito Amor.

Now about Cris. I perceive an anvil. IF José Angel and Sra Victoria are meant to be (assuming the writers aren't yanking our chains) and he has been married in the Church.... Well you know what that means :(

OH what the heck I'll go on record and say I hope she gets an anvil, too. But I'm pretty sure it's because I am just the kind of simpleton the writers want me to be. (Again assuming the writers aren't messing with us on the Vicky/JA front.)

1. Vicky and JA are one of the main couples: They, along with Frankie and Nikki, are featured in the opening credits.

2. OOOPS, they are both married...presumably in the Church. How do we resolve this?

2a. Whew, Nelson is a womanizer. That one is covered. Viewerville will not question Vicky's desire to get a divorce.

2b. Uh Oh, Cris and JA have a nice little stable home. Let's make Cris a raving lunatic of jealousy. Maybe no one will notice that she has every right to be jealous and they won't mourn when we kill her off.

Why do I buy it? See point #1. I gobble up all the drivel the writers will feed me. BTW, Blogger, that doesn't mean I'm a robot.
 

Telenovela rules have it that
our telenovela galán can never be the cause of someone dying.

If Cristina is killed off, surely it won't happen while he and JA are on the outs, e.g., they have a fight and she runs out of house into traffic and is hit by a bus.
Otherwise, it would look like he caused it, whether inadvertently or advertently .

She would have to die some other way, like a disease, or hit by a bus when they're in a lovey-dovey stage.

 

Funny you should say that, Doris. During the post "crazy in Vicki's office" scene, when JA and Cris were fighting outside Meta Imagen, I had a real fear that would not happen.
