PEAM #11, 03/25/2013 – Do Surprise Parties Always Miss the Mark?

We rejoin the party scene at Rogue’s palatial home with Rogue snearing at the carne asada.  An inappropriate it seems guest, Fermin, reveals that he was invited by Chucho, much to Rogue’s disgusto he shows the guard his name on the list of invited guests.  But he further hovers around the roast beast, which turns out to be javelina.  The lip smacker further advises Rogue that he should have some better party food to go along with the javelina like chicharonnes and guacamole.  Another housewife in sweater type approaches Rogue who starts to ask who she, but then shrugs, don’t tell me, must be another Chucho invitee.

Chatita contends with Veronica who has to be told several times who she is, this is a good foil since Vero gives up trying to pry info out of her about who Alma the girlfriend is.
More chat with the “inappropriates” wanting table service and further confusing the party. They seem to be the only ones actually enjoying the party.

The real Alma shows up to be ushered into the party with a nervous Rogue.  What is the nature of this party, it isn’t her birthday and she has a frightful headache, she would much rather go home bed to rest.

Turns out the list of the “best friends” from Alma’s address book are her plumber, hairdresser, etc. Poor Alma only has service people and idiot boyfriends in her life.  Rogue freaks out at the sight of the Turquoise  which doesln’t look at all like the BIG DIAMOND he demanded.  He attacks Doña Susana but the noble Chucho takes complete responsibility and tries to explain the turquoise significance as the stone of those born under the sign of Aquarius.

A quick sweet moment with Elias and Valentina playing fairy princess and adoring subject when Veronica calls, he motions Valentina to silences and assures worried Vronica that Valentina is certainly asleep since it is past 8, while Veronica wants him to be stunned by what she is snooping out about Chucho and his big bra secret life…  Meanwhile I am thrilled that Elias and Valentina have a secret life of fantasy in costumes.

Pati wants to leave with unknown pains too but Alma is drawn toward Rogue’s screaming berating of Chucho.  Alma is of course totally charmed by the turq and wonders how Rogue knew.  Behind her back, Chucho sign language and gestures the appropriate meanings of Turq and how it symbolizes the honesty and beauty and loyalty of his Alma.  He sighs a relief as she hugs him for his deep thoughtfulness then turns the moment into a public announcement that it is time to deepen the association since she is his partner in everything he is proposing marriage.  The crowd drops JAW especially Paticake immediately tears up, Chucho looks like someone kicked him in the stomach and Alma herself looks like she is about to faint.  After a stunned silence the crowd sort of applauds at least the foppish Fernando does.  Pati grabs for a quick and large drink, Chucho tells himself, I don’t think Licenciada said yes, I’m sure she didn’t answer yes.

Alone at an outdoor café table, Xóchi has waited for so long for Chucho without luck,   that she at last tearfully asks to pay her bill.

Veronica shows up sniffing out salt and spice on Elias while frenziedly presents her great discovery that Chucho is apparently enamored of Alma who is actually the ancient Chatita who is old enough to be his mother, isn’t he amazed? HE assures her that he is amazed that she seems to be jealous if he didn’t know better and why is she nosing into Chucho’s private big Bra or big whatever life.

We see poor Paticake in her cups (not bra cups, sorry guys) with her real tears are ruining her mascara as she replays the infamous public proposal over and over.

Veronica plays the cups (not scotch cups, sorry) routine saying he isn’t going to believe who Chucho’s girlfriend is.  She thought with those big boobies, she must be a magazine model (what magazines does she read anyway?)  Elias gets more irritated with her snooping and gossiping, while she and Elias start to argue over a deeper problem that she is concerned with his apparent obsession with cups (yes, bra cups thank you).  She flounces out of the room asking if he isn’t ready right now to go to bed.  He demurs that he will follow her shortly.  She pretends it doesn’t matter.  With Lady Macbeth out of the room, Elias grabs his chips out of the planter and starts to munch the forbidden munchies and to think Veronica’s jealousy must be for real.

A sad Chucho is about to get into his cups (not… oh you get it) at the bar when the real Alma comes in.  They do a polite embrace which she really enjoys as he wants to compliment her about her supposedly happy moment and wonderful match.  She confesses to total shock about this development as she feels like she is in a dream and maybe it is more like a pesadilla (nightmare) although neither of them admit their deep feelings.  Chucho can’t fake being elated for her impending wedding so leaves the room for a moment asking where the bathroom is before he says more inappropriate things.  (Does anyone else notice how impersonal this lovely house is?)

He immediately runs into the bathroom where Pati is crying and swaying dangerously.  He hears her talk about feeling so alone now that her best friend Alma is on the verge of marrying Rogue and she has no one in her life.  Chucho keeps suggesting he go get Alma to come help her but she says no while she pours out her loneliness while Chucho kindly points out that she is beautiful, a good person and must have a pack of interested men dying to be around her.  Sure, she says but the man she loves doesn’t love her.  Chucho gets the bottle of tequila out of her hand, suggest she straighten up her makeup and get out gracefully.

As he is taking the tequila/scotch up the stairs he runs into Doña Susana who is swaying almost as dangerously on the stairs and they chat about what is happening. She is so amazed in her semi drunken state how well the reception of the ring went over with Alma.  She is amazed at this gentlemanly ways. Somehow that reminds Chucho of Xochi’s name just as he finally remembers that he has stood up said Xóchi.  He tries to call her but Xóchi is so mad when she sees his number on her phone that she refuses to think he is better late than never.

Chucho goes back up to the bar where Alma is still standing.  She has a fierce headache but refuses analgesic.  They decide he must remember to come back to get her furniture to take to his apartment so they agree it might as well be tomorrow oh no why not tonight since you are already here.  She goes to a key cabinet and takes out the keys to the rooms downstairs and she insists he take her SUV.  They find that reason enough to hug warmly again.

Rogue and Fernando talk about all the unknown inappropriate people at the party and now in his house.  Fern reminds him that he better guard all that money.  Rogue smartly assures him that he has it well hidden in a box inside a bureau drawer in Alma’s furniture in the cabana in the garden so there is absolutely no chance that it is in danger.  We see Fernando carrying the very bureau down the stairs then leaving with the mattress and other furniture tied to the top of Alma’s car while Doña Susana sleeps in the front seat waiting for him.  Before sleeping he sets up the new furniture then sniffs the sheets and bed he has gained from Alma as he falls into lovely dreams about Valentina.

Alma foists off Rogue’s amorous kisses insisting she still has a terrible headache and wants to go home to sleep.

Chucho and Chatita catch up over a good breakfast big enough for ten to feel overfed at Chatita’s table.  She pulls out a note with a last name which reminds her to tell him of Veronica’s visit (snoopery) from last night.  and they both laugh that Veronica now thinks that his “Alma” is Chatita.  Jesus rightly worries that Veronica is looking for any reason to deny him visitation rights to his precious Valentina so he is trying so hard to keep her off guard.  Smarter than anyone thinks, Chatita assures him she did not reveal that her apartment is not Chucho’s.

At another breakfast, Rogue from his regal patio calls a mussy-Paticake with obvious hangover.  She asks how his night was with his fiancé and he assures her that Alma did NOT spend the night.  Pati’s hope springs upward, she has enough high spirits and fantasy dreams to raise the Titanic from the depths of the Atlantic.

Chatita questions Chucho about his blue mood as he washes her breakfast dishes showing us his muscles in a well fitted t-shirt, oops , where was I?  Since there is nothing he admits to, Chatita wonders if everything went well why does he look like he is going to a funeral.  He tries to assure her that it is just and normal that his Alma is going to marry Rogue.  She has to go off She tells him to be alert to day that the illogical will be logical , the ordered will be in disorder.  I missed the connection of her saying but she is so sweet to Jesus.

Veronica finally talks a beleaguered Elias into going to Avon to try to uncover if the delinquent Jesus is indeed a financial executive at Avon like he claims.  We can light a candle to her flirting with Elias until he gives in.  Let’s hope it keeps her out of Avon for a bit.

Pati fakes phone connection problems while she snorts about her small victory.  You mean that the future Señora Rivadeneira didn’t spend the night with him as she should have.  And then why is he calling she asks with great innocence and he just wants to be sure that “lo nuestro” is the same as always.  She freaks out.  Get out imbecile she says gruffly into the phone.  Up the drive comes Chucho in Alma’s car, while over at Pati’s it is the solicitous and willing Fernando simultaneously showing up sniffing around with perhaps the expectation that he could console…. the grieving amante…. She shoves him off with appropriate disdain.

Back at Rogue’s house Chucho bounces in to pick up Alma to give her a ride.  He finds out that she did NOT spend the night there.  Rogue is not happy admitting his failure to perform you might say.  He is further not happy that Alma had Chucho take her car last night since it doesn’t make sense.  Before he can explain further, right then Alma calls to tell Chucho where she is and he leaves with a spring in his step since he clearly has no reason to be here.  Now it is Rogue who demands a coffee and looks like the big headache has passed into his brain. They arrive at her gym or afterwards when Alma gets a chance to voice her strong doubt that her perfect turquoise ring was hand chosen by Rogue since he has always had trouble remembering her birthday let alone her birthstone and what it signifies.  She wiggles her turquoised finger in his face while he continues to deny that it was his thoughtful act and not the roguish Rogelio’s

Thank you for the speedy recap, Cheryl.
Happy Passover to all who are observing.
The princess play with Elias and Valentina was adorable. He is an incredible man.
I felt bad for Xochy, inadvertently being stood up.
I love the brief exchanges between Chucho and Alma. Hmmm, I don't remember hearing her answer the Rogue.

What's Vero's problem???? She is annoying and jealous.

Something went wrong electronically when I was publishing. Maybe crossed wires with Urban. Anyway Five drafts were saved and my final edited version is not what was saved. So sorry for mistakes! I will edit and update as soon as AB is finished.

Tonight's episode was presented by the color GREEN!!

1- Is Jesús neighborhood safe for Alma's car to spend the night?
2- Now that I see Alma's about to hit the gym, I am sure she could wear Carmelita's bra! Talk about ''doble pechuga''

Vocabulary:
Guácala - Disgusting, opposite to yummy
Tepache - Fermented drink made with pineapple's skin
Fritanga - Fried junk food
Covacha - little cave, in this case, a place to store things
Maroma - Cartwheel, but in this case, catch you in the act

If you got any more, just ask! :-)

Pablo, Thank you once again for the wonderful vocabulary additions. They are greatly appreciated by all I am sure.

Cheryl:

Thanks for this very great recap.

I too think that Vero is jealous. She is just using Valentina's visitation to get info for herself. Vero cannot stand for Chucho to have a girlfriend.

I felt sorry for Patimelt this evening. Poor thing. But laughed along with her when she was calling ole Rogue, lol.

Alma loved that ring, lol. I like the dynamic with her and Chucho and I lol'd when he took that dresser. Wonder what Rogue will do when he finds it missing? lol.

I like Chatita more and more. She is so sweet, and now that Chucho has moved into the building she won't be so scattered.

Can't wait for tomorrow when Elias shows up at Avon and what Chucho will do : )

Cheryl, Sorry for your problems posting -- but your recap is terrific. Your title is so telenovel-appropriate. Surprise parties usually go wrong.

Thanks for the vocab, Pablo. Very useful.

My favorite moment was right at the beginning when they dramatically and with heavy music showed us all the shocked faces when Rogelio made his proposal -- and he, himself, blissfully and self-centeredly grins stupidly.

Vero was so funny when she thought that she had sussed out the novia-- and that it was Chatita. She was positively chortling. She is SO annoying -- but in this epi she was fun to watch:
-the sniffing out the scent of salt.
-the batting of her eyes to get Elias to go along.

It was sad to see Xochi getting stood up.

Güera

Cheryl, thanks you so much for the quick and detailed recap.

With the engagement announcement, Alma looked almost as horrified as Pati. Loved the fact that Alma spent the night at home and Rogelio had to tell Jesús as much.

It looks like Elías could be called a "stress junk food eater" living in that pressure cooker with Verónica. It seems like she never got over Jesüs some how some way or other or is just nuts. Maybe it is just a combo platter of both with her other odd attributes thrown in.

I loved Chatita writing herself a note so she could tell Jesús what happened. She and Elías seem to be his best allies.

Pablo, thank you for the vocab notes.

Jarifa

Cheryl, thanks a melón! I couldn't watch last night (TV disconnected for carpet replacement), but I felt like I was there. LOVED your cups theme -- hilarious.

thanks the excellent & hilarious recap!

Poor xochi, sad to see her crying like that. I hope chucho finds someone way to make it up to her, but also hope that she figures out soon that he only likes her as a friend or she'll have some heartbreak coming her way.

Vero is totally obsessing about her ex and if she doesn't see that then she's crazy...oops, too late...but seriously I hope she purges whatever bad feelings she might have because would like to see her as one of the good guys later on

Loved the line "they find that reason enough to hug warmly again" how many more slow-mo hugs are we gonna have??

Is this tn coming on tonight?? I thought I was seeing commercials for the mex/usa soccer game, wasn't sure if it was just where I live or something....

jlk

JLK:

PEAM will be on this evening. The promo for the soccer game you saw is on Unimas, not Univision : )

Chery! Thank you soooo much!

" he washes her breakfast dishes showing us his muscles in a well fitted t-shirt, oops , where was I?" It has taken some getting used to seeing Colunga in a comedy and as a secretariO no less but my, my, my, thank you novela gods for the muscle shot!! I am interested in what everybody else thinks of him in this role. . .I will go back and read the prior recaps. Thank you, Cheryl, and thanks in advance to all the other cappers and commenters!

Lila

Thanks Cheryl for the entertaining recap.

and yes, for those who love watching sports, the USA vs. Mexico game will be broadcast on UniMas/Telefutura tonight.

Cheryl, I have no idea what you're fussin' about, but if the internets ate your homework, well, lo siento, but it's still a fine recap.

Re Colunga in this role, from my "guy" point of view, why not? He looks like he's probably a decent sort in real life. The one that bugs me is Rogelio since he looks like a male model in a print ad for fancy Italian suits. Just sayin'. Wonder what he pays for haircuts and gel?

I have no idea where one would go in Virginia to try roasted javelina, but I'll bet it could be pulled into pretty good barbecue. With cole slaw and hot vinegar. And hush puppies. And sweet tea. Cripes, I ought not comment at lunchtime.

I do look forward to Xochitl's ugly duckling -> beautiful swan routine down the road a ways.

Veronica would benefit from eating a mess of greens. Just might clear her clogged "mind."

Yes Mike. Xochi is sure to have a transformation one of these days. I hope there is a galan worthy of her on the horizon. I've always been a fan of one of the 3 sillies. They are all due for personality transplants down the line -- and if I were Xochi, I'd be hoping for the curly haired one who was our Arnoldo on Gancho & the adorable Moncho on Amorcito Corazon.

Güera

Speaking of, anybody feels like the TN runs faster, feels a lot better and funnier when we don't see those three stooges or go to work?
I'd like to set the Avon workplace to the minimum and let the story take place in Jesús ''privadita'', Vero's, Alma's and Rogelio's mansions, the gym, anywhere! Anywhere but the office, please!!

I think the three sillies line up pretty well with the secretarial gremio -- hopefully we'll see some character development soon. :(

Pablo, I agree. I almost gagged when they were showing PowerPoint slides to the Frenchmen. Guera, I agree with you, too, about which of the Tres Tontos will end up as Xochitl's ardent swain.

Yes, because ''ahooora resulta'' that from the hundreds of photographers in Monterrey, is Elías the one who ends up going to AVON to take some pictures!! and like in every other TN, the same eight characters, thanks to some upper power, are tha same who do everything everywhere, like those hated ''cinderella'' stories where 98% of the time, the maid ends up being the illegitimate child of her boss... What are the odds!!
Please, hire five or six more people and even if they are never seen again, let them to the job!!
I hate when ALL THE CHARACTERS in a TN end up living in the same house and being ALL RELATED, LOL!!

I see signs that the office meanies like Susana are having a change of heart about Jesus. He is behaving so kindly and solving problems (except poor Xochi's fantasy romance with him). We are also seeing the Toughy masks slip on everyone but the three sillies. They ALL have problems, so Jesus' gentle patience will win the day eventually.

I think Elias will come to Avon, see Jesus effective and useful, and help him with a cover up story to assuage the neurotic fears of vapid Veronica.

And Mike, I'm going to plan a pilgrimage to Virginia so you, Emilia and I can go in search of that javelina barbecue EXACTLY as you have described it! I love spit fired meat, when I eat meat.

Stellar recap as always Cheryl! Ah, hat a tangled web some of our denizens are weaving.

If I didn't already find FC attractive, I was a puddle of mush seeing him doing dishes. I mean, really? Every woman's dream right? A hunk who does the dishes is truly a gift from the gods.

So if Alma looked like she wanted to hurl when she got the proposal, maybe, kind a, sort of, say NO, or whisper "hey can we talk about this later". Still bothers me a bit that she seems a bit to let him sort of manipulate the relationship. And hey, they spent the night alone---it wasn't Thursday. What did he expect!!

Poor Patimelts. Maybe her and Xochi should become besties and talk about the loves that don't love them back. I also can't wait to see our little meekling Xochi become a beautiful butterfly at some point.

Vero, Vero, Vero....

I agree Pablo--something rather refreshing last night not dealing with the "workplace".

Thank you, Cheryl. Haven't read this yet but I look forward to it. I didn't get a lot out of watching the episode (no big surprises) but those kinds of episodes always seem to inspire the best recaps. :)

As for the comments, I agree with Pablo et al and have from day one - the scenes at the office are the ones that drag things down. Since nobody there does any work and I have yet to feel much of an attachment to any of the "other reindeer," it's just like listening to mean kids taunting one another at recess.

Nevertheless, I'm expecting tonight's episode to be heavy on office scenes. And I'll be recapping. I don't know whether that will be a good thing or a bad thing. :)

It's always a good thing when you recap, Julie!

Tks Julie, great recap

I'll take FC any way I can get him, comedy, historical, pirate, doctor, removing snake venom, arquitecto, rock mover & especially doing dishes.

Hi Cheryl..I'm sure I got the corrected recap because it was impeccable. Loved the

"foppish Fernando"

Your riff on "cups"

And your mind wandering while describing Chucho's muscular dishwashing routine. Ah yes, a man at the sink...only thing better is a man in the shower.

Pablo...thanks for those words.."maroma" I never would have figured out. Nice to have our own in-house translator!

And yes, Alma's workout top certainly emphasized her assets...hope Veronica gets a chance to see her in just that outfit!

You're welcome. If not relevant, could be at least interesting.
We call slang ''caló, jerga o jerigonza'' and is a very rich way to speak using other than our everyday words.
Maybe in an effort to make the TN feel more authentic, real or close to the people, or maybe trying to make it feel more ''regia''.
Each one of the 32 states in México has its own slang, and call the same things with different names. Is funny but I guess is what makes our country so special, right?

Maroma, for instance, is also called ''pirueta'', ''machicuepa'' and so on and on... LOL

Had to fast forward through Xochi's crying scene-too heartbreaking. I don't like this storyline. I hope she finds out soon that Jesus just likes her as a friend.

JudyB: "And yes, Alma's workout top certainly emphasized her assets...hope Veronica gets a chance to see her in just that outfit!"--me too!!

Very entertaining writing! Thanks Cheryl!

Agree with Mike, Rogelio's manscaping bills must be off the charts.

Veronica is working on my nerves. Thank Dios her little girl has Elias.

At the novella's 'fin', when karma hits *all*, I hope Veronica gets stuck with something really yucky like head lice! Could you imagine how she'd freak?? Gertie

Gertie, You are too funny. What a perfect curse for our sour Veronica

Thanks, Cheryl, excellent recap.

I hope we don't have to wait until the very end to find out why Chucho and Verónica broke up. Judging by her behavior, he probably dumped her. Or maybe she was too impatient to see the potential and dumped HIM because he wasn't rich enough. That mansion that Elias bought for her is amazing. And the guy doesn't even work much either!

I doubt if it will happen, but I'd like to see Patimelt stick to her guns and not continue to have Rogue jumping her bones as his side dish.

Thanks for this rollicking recap, Cheryl.

Up till now I've not been much of an Elias fan but after watching him play with Valentina, I'm on board. That was precious (and in a good way).

I felt bad for Pati, but I thought she already understood her place among Rog's priorities.

Right now it's hard to determine who is most forgetful, Chucho or Chatita.

Carlos

Hey guys, who is the female singer in the opening credits? Is she part of the show or is she just the person who sings the opening credits? I'm confused. Thanks.

Thank you , Cheryl, for another wonderful recap. Jesus and Chatita are good for each other. She loves having someone to cook delicious meals for , and he is good company for her. Watching them share food together like a family is heartwarming. Even though I prefer FC as a pirate/ don/ hacienda owner. I do love seeing his sweetness shine through in this role. I've seen him on talk shows , and he seems to be sweet in reality. Women love men who are willing to wash the dishes...very sexy. Hub's job is to unload the dishwasher, but he will wash dishes if I set everything up...dishes soaking in hot water and soap bubbles.

Great recap Cheryl!

Steve- The singer is América Sierra, featuring 3ballMTY (Tribal Moterrey). They had a hot song last year called Inténtalo, that you could hear on every other commercial for dance music or mixed music cds.

I can’t believe Alta is letting herself get dragged into a proposal like this, when she was teetering on the edge of breaking things off with Rogue. At least she likes her whimsical ring. I hope she doesn’t believe Jesus when he says he didn’t pick it for Rogue.

Sorry, typo. That's Monterrey...

Loved Elias playing princess with Valentina, and Jesus washing the dishes for Chatita. I could watch those two being sweethearts, in their form-fitting, muscle-bearing shirts, all day. :)

Hmm...Viva...Alta ????...was that a Freudian slip ? AltaAlma????? I've been thinking of The Brothers ...Dumb and Dumber. The Two Stooges...Elias would, of course , be Curly, but which Stooge is Fancy Fern.. Mo or Larry ????? [Speaking of which, I went to a new local hair salon the other day. Three locals came in , and the hairdresser told me that they were all Larrys....go figure.

I could even watch them without their shirts. :-)

Susanlynn- No slip. Alta is my name for her. :)

Very accurate! And I just came up with ''Cavrónica''. Sounds bad, but fits her like a glove!
