Bloggers please read!!

Dear bloggers, as I have mentioned before many times, I need you to compose your posts in plain text format. Notepad, or directly into the blogger text window. Do not format.

Do not compose in WORD or any other program which adds formatting codes. Cutting and pasting from Word ends up looking like the example below. When you format in blogger, or use any program - like Word - which inserts formatting automatically - it sometimes makes the sidebar disappear in some browsers.

So Just Use Text Files. Thank you! Blog Mom

If anybody has a question leave it here and I will try to answer.

If you paste directly into the "HTML" tab rather than the "Compose" tab, you should get a clean, plain-text paste with all formatting removed.

I don't compose in Word, but I do paste into the HTML tab because... well I dunno why I started doing it originally, but now it's a habit.

After you paste into the HTML tab, you can still go to the Compose tab to see how it looks.

I believe you can copy and paste from Word and then, in the Blogger post composition screen, select all your text and click the "remove formatting" button. Does that solve the problem, for those who find it easier to write and save their work in Word?

Or what Julie said. It would be nice to be able to put in formatting without screwing things up. That seems to work.

Hah! I didn't know about the Remove Formatting button. It must be relatively new. (Like, less than six years old, LOL.)

Jane, I copied the word text into text editor and resaved it as a .txt document. I deleted the word version that was turned back into draft form on the blog listing. Now I have reposted the new version coming straight from text editor. Would you take a look at it, please and let me know if this solves the problem. In future I will compose in text editor. Thanks, I did not realize that word was not an appropriate format any longer. Much has changed in the last year.

You know... it might not be such a good idea to paste from Word to the HTML tab (as I suggested earlier) either. I forgot that Word sometimes inserts goofy characters, like the 1/2 character, nonbreaking spaces, etc. and I don't know if those play nice with Blogger.

Technology makes all our lives easier... except when it makes them more difficult.

I found that I only have this problem if I paste from Word into Blogger on Explorer, but not at all when I paste into Blogger on Firefox. Not sure why, but it works for me.

I use WordPad and have never had a problem. My recaps always look the same way I composed, copied and pasted them into Blogger. I don't think WordPad has formatting or if it does I have never used it.

Madelaine, WordPad is perfect, it is a text editor. All the suggestions above which result in a clean file in the html file are fine. And yes, "smart quotes" turn into weird characters in many browsers.

Yeah, I use Wordpad. Notepad has buggy display problems. Wordpad is so much easier to work with.

I post from Word into Blogger using Firefox, and the post itself usually looks okay to me, but the text above the jump break is gibberish in the feed. I will try "remove formatting" next time and see if it works.

I'm not sure what I did starting out after being given permission to post, BUT....I compose in Word, Copy and Paste to Blog and it comes out clean (and I use Explorer, so go figure). Tonight I will do what I've always done and use Remove Formatting button only if it turns out weird. Give me a thumbs up or thumbs down afterwards.

I posted from Word into Firefox, used the "remove formatting" button, and thought I was home-free. I could read my recap perfectly well but my friend Diana was just getting gibberish. So I re-entered the recap directly into Blogger. That did the trick.

Next time I'll compose in TextEdit, I guess.

Oh well.

Anita,
Did you run into problems posting?

Blue Lass,
I'd like to know whether your strategy works this week.

NM, I'm not up again until next week, but I'll let you know.

Update: no strategy worked! I tried removing formatting and saving in both plain text and rich text. It was interesting, but ultimately fruitless. Next time I'll just compose directly into Blogger.

Blue Lass, if you compose in (whatever) and paste into the compose window - then select that all, copy and paste it into the html window, it should have no formatting. try that.

OK! Next time!

Blue Lass:

So now we know that nothing works except listening to Jane!

Of course you CAN compose directly in Blogger but if you prefer to compose offline, you can use "TextEdit" (that's what I have on my Mac) or "WordPad" (which I guess is the equivalent on PC's). Then you can copy and paste as you have always done.

Settling for "TextEdit" after using a newer version of "Word" is a bit like trading in your new Lexus for a stripped-down Corolla ... ni modo
