Amores Verdaderos #140 Tue 5/28/13 Good English, for a change
Lo siento, I sort of snoozed through parts of this episode. Here's a quick overview. Will flesh out bits later, but I think the action is slated to pick up in future episodes.
First off, an example of "Good English"!
Nikki speaks pretty darn good English in this scene. |
Brief overview, based on memory, not in order:
* Nikki goes to the Little Gorilla's hotel, only to find that he's already gone home. She speaks IN ENGLISH to the hotel guy. Her English is better than his (which was understandable but with a definite oddness about it). Nikki sounded almost like a native to me.
* Vicki confronts Adri about her "feelings" for Big Angel. Adri assures Vicki that it's just a friendship, nothing more. Vicki doesn't seem to quite buy it until she eavesdrops on Big Angel and Adri talking about how they are Just Friends.
* Nikki and Roy the Boy agree to separate. This is not working out, they're just like buddies now, which is okay but not a marriage. They'll deal with the family when they get home.
* The Little Ape has returned to Mexico. His first stop is the Mansion where he meets up with Lili, who plants him with a big kiss. Uh oh. They have this discussion about how maybe she can be his novia. He tries to play the "let's be friends" card. Big Angel overhears the whole novia thing and FREAKS OUT, but the whole misunderstanding is soon smoothed over, 'cuz Guzmancito is not going to date Lili.
* Cande is now in town and visits the house and talks to Anyballs. She feels guilty for not letting anyone know about The Secret. (Lili's true parentage.) Anyballs asks her to keep the secret for a while longer. Eventually he'll sort it all out and everyone will know. The Furry Fornicator arrives and is introduced to Cande. He's soooo pleased to see her (as she is the writer of The Letter). Douche.
* Big Angel asks Cande about The Letter. He suspects that it contained the identity of Christina's father.
* Childish jealousy between Victoria and Big Angel. Big Angel loves Vicki but still feels guilty. We have more eavesdropping. Ho hum. Vicki gets the idea that Big Angel is willing to let her go. He pretty much tells her that she should "go for it!" with Carlos. So she decides she will. She doesn't sound too thrilled about it.
* Carlos visits the Balvanera house as Joan, to pick up Adri to go to some event where he is speaking about film as Joan. He seems kind of taken with her (kisses her on the cheeks effusively) but am not sure if that is for effect or what. For some dumb reason he thinks that he can come to the Balvanera mansion with little risk of being discovered by Vicki. Of course he almost is detected, as Adri invited Vicki to attend the event as well. Carlos/Joan has to think fast and jettison Adri out of there before Vicki comes down the stairs. Lame.
* Carlos later arranges to be at an imported food store as Carlos the Milk Man.
* At the film event, Jocelyn "warns" Adri to not get any ideas about Joan, that he's a "free spirit." Adri looks like she's thinking about it. Not sure she ever thought of Joan that way in the first place.
* The Little Ape does not know that Guillo has been kidnapped yet. Big Angel realizes this but doesn't say anything because he promised he wouldn't.
* Leo the Low returns to Mexico City, calls Beatriz and is able to learn that Guillo isn't with her. He pretends that he'll "let" Beatriz see Guillo. She just has to promise to not tell anyone. She of course will do anything to see Guillo.
* Big Angel visits with Opalina. He says he's losing Vicki. Opalina says no way. She gives him the key to her house so he can go there whenever he needs some down time or something.
* Kendra the Ho is furious because her skanky charms have not been enough to hold the Furry Fornicator. She calls her competition, Nabila, to find out what's up. Nabila is getting a massage and doesn't give a crap about any of this. Kendra the Ho swears that she'll kill Nabila, a threat which of course no one takes seriously. Nabila hangs up on the Ho.
* There is more petty horse manure between Vicki and Big Angel. She's gonna give Carlos a go. She visits Carlos at the Imported Food Store. He's wearing his Milkman Cap. She's doing her repressed sexual tension thing with Big Angel at the door of the Imported Food Store and Carlos sees. Carlos comments that she used to look at him (Carlos) like that 25 years ago! He ain't dumb. She blows that off and says she's there to see him, yadda yadda. They blab for a while about how she's changed, no she hasn't, oh whatever. Finally Carlos says he's gonna show her the REAL him! He plants a big, dry-looking kiss on her. End of episode.
I'm sure I missed some bits. Will fill them in later.
AVANCES: More of the dry kiss. Nikki and Guzman finally reunite. At last!

Thank so much for this most marvelous recap. Had to laugh at Ms Vikki and her posturing with Carlos. She also shouldn't listen at doors, lol.
Neither should Angel for that matter I had to laugh at Angel and Guzmancito going chest to chest over Lili, too funny.
What wasn't funny was Lili planting that big ole smooch on Guzmancito. Hands off, chickie, I would have told her. That will so never go anywhere. He has told her over and over that isn't going to happen. I can't wait for Nikki to get back and put an end to that already.
I am glad Nikki and Roy are sort of like BFF's. They turned out to be better friends than husband and wife.
Ms Vikki and Carlos, not seeing it. Had to laugh at Joan/Carlos' real Spanish from Spain accent, even though that's how Lisardo probably speaks in real life. He is from Spain after all. I liked how he kissed Adri on both cheeks and said it was the custom in Spain, lol. He really grabbed her, it was too funny. She was flabbergasted.
That kiss with Carlos and Ms Vikki was just blah. No passion like there was with Ms Vikki and the Angel. Can't wait to see if she feels the love with Carlos.
The low one needs to go. I hope Guzmancito, Angel and Salsa Dude take care of that.
Nabila better watch out.
Opalina finally showed! Wonder what will happen now? Hmmmm......
That kiss!!! How awful was that? It looked as if Carlos was pressing the force of his entire jaw onto Vicki's lips! I was sort of running for Carlos and thought may be he was going to tell Vicki the truth about himself but instead he just want for that awkwardness. Smh in disappointment.
Loved Vicki's outfit in that scene though! How chic did she look with her new haircut, the sunglasses, the blouse and those pants! So modern and youthful!
I LOL'ed at Kendra acting so high school and getting hung up on! Hahahaha
Looking forward to the rest of the recap but great job do far!
Running is supposed to be rooting
Want should be went etc
I read on Wikipedia that Eiza Gonzales lived in the U.S. for a short time, a few years ago. That may have been all she needed to lose her accent. Maybe she has had native English speaking tutors, too. Whatevs,,,, I was impressed with her English, too!
The scene between JA and Guzman cracked me up. After JA finishes going ballistic on Guzman about not being novios with Lili, then he's all --- Dude, welcome home my BFF, gimme a hug. LOL
Nelson ….. barf. What a disgusting rat. I am so looking forward to his anvil/cast iron skillet/pie cart.
Opalina giving JA a key to her house cannot be a good idea. Somehow, someway, Vikki will find out and another mal entendido
JA's overprotectiveness of Lili is getting ridiculous. Poor girl would never have a boyfriend if it were up to him. It was pretty hilarious when he asked for a hug after all that.
Doris- My first thought about Opalina's place being empty and accessible to JA is that he and Vicky will finally have a place they can go to be alone without prying eyes or interruptions.
But I don't think Vikki is done having Cristina-like jealousy attacks over JA's friendship with Opalina. We've got two or three months left for this telenovela to run? Lots of time for more misunderstandings before El Gran Por Fin.
Thanks much Elvira! Nabila on the massage table dishing it right back to Kendra was quite amusing.
JA spoke a little English too. Okay, he just said "okay" but it was cute.
I like Lili, but I hope that kiss she gave Guzmancito is her last try at him. I guess she had to go for it cause Nikki's married and this is her chance, but Lili should realize now once and for all that there are no sparks from Guzmancito for her.
JA will freak out over whomever Lili hooks up with. His asking Guzmancito for a bro hug after his explosion was a hoot.
Carlos was much sexier kissing Adriana on the cheeks than he was pushing face with Miss Vickie. He better whip out Joan Constantine fast, cause Carlos is losing.
Niece,
"He better whip out Joan Constantine fast, cause Carlos is losing.
Excellent.
As for my ongoing negativity toward Joan/Carlos, today I present that kiss as Exhibit A and rest my case.
Carlos
Who says Carlos isn't a gentleman? He took off his cap before he smashed his face into Victoria's, didn't he?
Opalina, Opalina. First you tell us that nothing can change destiny -- the Angel and Vikki will be together.
And then you start talking about personal responsibility -- bury your guilt and decide to be happy with Vikki or make the decision to give her up.
This is all much too confusing. I like my videntes putting their money where their snails are.
And she's LEAVING her hermano de alma on his own now?
Maybe she wants him to finally make a decision. Sometimes I think he is using the excuse of guilt to avoid any further involvement with Ms Vikki. Both their worlds are so topsy turvy. Ms Vikki is still married and her life is a mess. Now he knows how Cris felt. He is just as jealous as she was. Ms Vikki I think she trying to talk herself into this relationship rekindling with Carlos. I think, she thinks if she talks herself into it, she'll succeed. Good luck with that.
As far as Ms Vikki and the Angel meeting at Opalina's maybe this will be a catalyst, as Doris said, no interruptions no Nellie accusations, no Carlos slobbering all over Ms Vikki. Instead of Angel and Ms Vikki listening at doors, they need to have another convo about how they feel about each other. Why are they suddenly so clueless again????
Poor Betty. I just know that low one is gonna pull something awful on her. I want that anvil for him stat!
Neice:
I too liked that whipping out of Joan Constantine, lol.
I thought that the forced over the top kiss at the end was terrible. I
wonder how Victoria will take it?
I know that there is a difference of cultures and I can accept most of the differences but every time
that I see Joan used for John I just go bananas as Joan is a girls
ladies name. Does this bother anyone else?
The big Nikki/Guzmancito reunion tonight. That should be good. Victoria in Texas will be cheering.
the gringo
I think this name Joan in Spanish is the equivalent of Johann in Germanic countries. It is almost pronounced the same way. There is a famous singer in Mexico with the first name of Joan.
Anita - Yes, that was intentional and has been ever since I got sucked into watching "Engañada" as a telenovela novice. Since then, I call every one of them the "por fin." The only exceptions (for me) were Cazando un Millionario, Amor Real, La Hija Del Mariachi and Corazon Salvaje '93.
I saw two remarkable kisses last night. That savage bruising attack Joan perpetrated on Vikki and then in PeAM Maricela laid a gentle fleeting chaste (but fraught with promise) kiss on Elias' lips that made me break out in chill bumps.
Carlos
You are so right about Opalina's place as a meeting place for Ms Vikki and the Angel away from prying eyes. Or maybe a safe haven for the Angel to go when he has had enough at the Balvanera Manse ; )
That was an amazing kiss on PEAM. They need some of these kisses her, instead of that face smooshing going on last night ; )
Yawn/Carlos just isn't doing it for me. That kiss was so unromantic - yuk! And, when Vicky finds out he's been lying to her all along, she'll be so insulted she'll kick him to the curb. And she should do the same to her dear friend Jo-Ho for aiding and abetting.
I'd say Nabila's days are numbered; it will be fun to speculate on the how, when and where of her demise.
JA really appreciated how great Vicky looked in her black and white outfit. I thought his suggestion of lunch was so cute, but she turned him down for the milk man (isn't Yawn/Carlos in Dairy?)
Leo being back in town cannot be good for anyone. Note to writers: Bea has suffered more than enough.
I too thought that JA's getting the keys to Opalina's house might mean a possible location for a tryst.
Barbara
Childish jealousy between Victoria and Big Angel. Oh so true. But I think this will keep them apart rather than bring them together, Opalina's love nest or no. BTW Opalina told Big A that she was going on some sort of trip and wanted him to have her keys to come and go. She *must* have "seen" something to do this. Doesn't she have neighbors to leave the key with to check up on her place while she's gone?
I'm going with the majority here and this will be the first place they come to "talk." Vikki didn't like it so much the first time they came there, so who knows.
Vikki was certainly not expecting that dry kiss and probably had none of the electricity that she felt while NOT kissing Arriaga during that first dance she had with him. I'm glad they are giving us clips of that scene in the credits. It is so romantically sexy.
Please, please, don't let that be another fantasy sequence where Nikki is only imagining meeting up with Guzmi. Remember, he still doesn't have a clue that Nikki and Roy have been living like brother and sister all this time. Is he just going to enfold her in his arms, no questions asked? Will she even have time to tell him that she'll so be free for him? Hmmm. We can hope.
We've reached the point of no return
That actually means We can't turn back now; we have to keep on going forward..
What he meant to say (I assume) was something like We've come to the end of the line; it's time to turn around and go back.
Maybe the writers should consult Eiza when they are looking for an English phrase to put in the mouth of one of the fresas
About "Joan"
Didn't our Mexican friend, Jarocha, make a comment very similar to the Gringo's about how much she disliked the name? Or am I not remembering that correctly?
I just wanted to comment how happy I was that we had a good natured character listening on a conversation and that resulting in something good. The listening behind the door is a populat telenovela trope where it is usually the villanous characters that listen to the conversations of good people and then use the infor to their advantage so it was nice that we got to see Victoria here listening to a conversation that instead, put away her fears of her sister hooking up with the man she loves.
I loved Vikki's outfit too. I usually hate the costuming of Nicandro Díaz's novelas but I really enjoy how elegant, youthful and lovely Victoria looks here.
Gringo: Joan is the Catalonian version of the name Juan. It's common in Spain for males and it is sometimes used to in Latin America too, but it's rare to hear it here.
Jarocha
I don't dislike Joan, I dislike Joan Constantín. It's the union of the two names that sounds awful to me. Like the classical novela names that nobody in their right mind would give their children, like Fernando José. Some names sound good together and some sound incredibly forced.
Jarocha
Jarocha
Say -- how does the name "Aníbal" sound to you? It always makes me giggle, not because of the "AnyBalls" thing but because I can't imagine calling a baby "Hannibal."
And yet I've come across several characters with this name in telenovelas.
I can't stand the name "Aníbal". I think it feels really awkward to pronounce. To me it would be less awkward if the emphasis were on the first syllable, but I still don't like it. Seems like a weird name to give a baby. Aníbal Lecter. Etc.
Some of the character I also think are trying to sound high-class to the point of ridiculousness are the ones who use too many family names in everyday usage. Like Carlota Espinoza de los Monteros, in ENDA.
I always delight in the names the writers choose for the characters and wonder how much, if any, calculation goes into their choices.
Of current telenovela names I really love Octavio, that's a name I'd consider for a son in the future. Of this novela I like Rolando and Jose Ángel. Liliana, Adriana and Victoria are nice names, if a bit too common. I'm really tired of all the Marías in novelas, I wish there could be a year without one, the same for the Guadalupes although there aren't that many as there used to be ten years ago.
Jarocha
Also, Octavio reminds me of a tragic character, Septimus Smith, in one of my favorite novels, Mrs Dalloway.
When we were choosing names for our children, we had to set aside some beautiful ones because of personal associations. It's so idiosyncratic, isn't it?
Oh and I love Monserrat. :)
Personally, I could never name a child Cynthia or Martin or Jennifer, due to personal associations, although the names themselves don't sound bad.
I am weighing in on the kiss #2.
I didn't really like it and I don't think Vikki did either.
It seemed forced and as though he was trying to prove a point, not lay a big passionate smacker on Vikki.
The one thing it may have done is to provoke JA to deal with his guilt, which he started to do when he met with Opalina.
The other thing I noticed when he was at the conference with Adriana, after he stepped off the stage he got rid of the "horrible" scarf he had on. He looks just fine without it. He has painted himself into a corner by dancing with both Balvanera sisters. He needs to come clean soon.
I think because this novela is popular, this will drag out a little longer than we all want.
I guess Nikki's realization her marriage was a mistake is supposed to signify a rise in maturity. I hope so for Guzman's sake.
I think there is more suffering before all is concluded.
I want the Low One to get erased right now.
César reminds me of an annoying classmate from middle school so that ruins the name for me.
I do like Sebastián. It sounds lovely.
For women I'd love if telenovela writers used Karyme more. I've always liked that name and all the Karymes I've met have been lovely, plus, that name sounds great with practically every last name.
Jarocha
Niecie, I'm with you regarding Liliana. To add to it, I just feel so sorry for her and she will only get hurt doing this to herself. She is almost throwing herself to Guzmancito. For a man to say that he has told her so many times there can never be anything between them, she should have gotten the message already.
On the other side of the coin, how does Carlos think about Vicki. He left her for 25 years and did not pursue her relentlessly ever since, did he expect that Vicki remained the same to him?
