Qué Bonito Amor #35 (Mex 52-53.1) Friday 5/31/13 Fatherhood: The Good, The Bad and The Fugally Ugly or There Are Fathers and Then There Are Fathers

Cap 51 partial -52 -53 partial

While Irasema and Susanito are enjoying a passionate lip-lock at the end of the song (a difficult tempo and melody which Sr. Biaggio has nailed superlatively well) Fernando de los mil amores is hiding inside Roxana’s bedroom closet desperately trying to control his sphincter.  Regino and his two gorillas race in, look out the window, and decide nothing more to do and--we assume--they leave the way they came.  This apparently has given Fer a pass to jump out the window himself cuz we see him a couple minutes later walking merrily down the street and taking a cell call from another of his lovers.

Meanwhile, Lt. Curtis and BFF Gala are still spying on Com. Derecho and his dinner companion whom she still assumes to be his latest snatch from across the room.  Well, we all know how “assume” breaks down:  it makes an ass of u and an ass of Lt. Curtis, who races over to the comandante’s table and before he can introduce his daughter to her, starts hassling him over him being there with his lover.  Date Carolina gets all smoochie-face and cuddly with him and smiles mischievously over at Curtis.  “—Who wouldn’t want to be this attractive man’s lover?”  Wink, smile.  Derecho looks at Curtis.  “—Hello,  darling little one.”  Curtis fights back her tears.  (Huh?  Is this poor direction or was something lost in translation?  Who’d he call Darling?  Curtis or Caroline?  Truly I do not want to review this FF worthy relationship/conversation again.)

At JNTR Bar, sly bastardo de Rubin eavesdrops on Rigoberto and JAntos discuss how he’s grown as a human being, jumping from trucker, to mechanic, to one fine mariachi singer, and then to someone who has learned to love.  JAntos allows it’s all due to his guardian angel, Maria.  All the more reason to fess up to her, advises Rigoberto.  He’d like to tell her the whole truth, but he’s afraid of losing her.  That’s Ruben’s cue to jump in and admit he’s got his nose out of joint sticking it where it doesn’t belong.  “—Ahah! I knew you were hiding something and can’t be trusted!  What is it you’re hiding?!?!?”   JAntos suffers a nano-moment of indecision before going into defensive attack mode.

Curtis loses it and starts attacking Carolina.  “—Don’t you provoke me, little girl!”  Com. Derecho tries to explain but can’t get a word in edgewise.  “You’re a common slut and this man deserves the best of the best!”  He tells Curtis to behave but Caro says let her continue.  Lt. Curtis is confounded.  “--Say what?”  “--He’s  my papi perfecto!”  Curtis looks for the nearest crack in the floor to curl up into.

Back at the JNTR, we enjoy a Mutt’nJeff moment as Rigoberto gets up to face off with Ruben over sticking his out-of-joint nose into places it has not been invited.

[much more to come]
"--This man is an old friend who knows all about my past and it would seem that you and your wife are exactly alike: always enjoying tearing down the reputation [rebajar=dissing, demeaning] of this bar." Ruben is unfazed.   He has always suspected this fine-talking scoundrel is a phony, sayz he, and he’s going to do whatever it takes to discover the truth about JAntos and make sure Maria hears about it!

Meanwhile, La Vampira de Elvira barges into Maria’s dressing room and the bitch-witch starts bullying her about getting her fired.  “—You damned ignorant ghetto-snipe!  If you think things are going to stay the same around here you’re very mistaken, because absolutely nobody puts their hands on me!”  Maria jumps up and finally snaps.  Maria says she’s had enough of the big boobed brat’s adolescent mischief and her endless vitriolic stream of verbal slanders.  “—Look you.  I have had enough of your threats.  Ok?  You know?  Not only are you a slut, but you were brought up without manner #1.   Didn’t anyone ever tell you to knock first?  This is a private dressing room!”  “Hah!  I own this place!  And, I’m going to have you thrown out on the street so you can crawl back to the ghetto where you belong!”  Maria says forget it, girlfriend!  Tell it to the hand! Do whatever you care to. You don’t scare me a bit.  It’s not my fault you feel you have to throw yourself at a man who doesn’t have the slightest interest in you!  Do it.  Go tell Daddy. In fact, no!  I’ll go do it myself!”

Out front at the table with JAntos and Ruben the big boy trash talk continues.  JAntos says he’s no liar and life’s fortunes have a way of always turning around.  Ruben gets into JA's face. "--I love Maria and want to protect her from you and the pain when she learns the truth about you!  I love her and I will fight for her!"  (More like he hopes she's filled with pain so he can win and get himself a trophy wife.)

Maria rushes out to find Concho then tells him thanks for the memories, but she’s had it with the insults and the abuses she’s had to put up with around there recently.  He’s caught flat footed and asks what she’s talking about.  Maria doesn’t come up for air. “I have my self-respect, my dignity!  No sir!  That comes first and I am tired of the threats, the insults and the humiliation!  Pardon me, but I am quitting!  I will no longer work at this bar!”  Concho begs her to tell him what in the hell she’s talking about!  “—What happened?”  “--Better ask your daughter, Elvira, about that.  I’m sorry to have to be the one to point out the obvious but ever since Jorge Alfredo’s arrival here, she’s done all she could to make my life unbearable!  Sorry, but everything has its limit and I’ve reached mine!”

Maria turns on her heel and storms back to the dressing room to change while Concho begs her not to do it.  “—Maria!! Please don’t do this to me!”  Viral Vi whines to papi that Maria’s a big liar “wAAAAAh!  It’s all her fault!  But Concho’s so angry he’s ready to spank her badd-ass bratty bottom black and blue. (Viewerville yells at the screen it’s “Too little and wayyy too late!”)  “—Get into my office!  NOW!”

Back at the restaurant Curtis knows she’s stuck not one, but both feet in her big maw down past her tonsuls and dutifully returns to her table when Derecho finally pulls rank and orders her to.  They’ll discuss it in the morning.  “—Yes sir.”  Once Curtis retreats to drown herself in her sorrows, Caro tells her papi that this is the right woman for him after all these years without Mama around.  “--It’s obvious that she’s crazy in love with you!”  “--Yes, she’s also a raving lunatic [loca de atar] and a crazy broad is not what I had in mind.”  He looks over at Curtis with a worried frown.

The waitresses at the bar race into the dressing room to see what’s gotten into Maria.  She cannot afford to quit cuz everyone knows her family depends on her.  Yeah, she knows, but she’s had it absolutely up to here with Elvira!

Out front again, JAntos demands to know how Ruben dares to tell him to his face that he’s in love with his girlfriend!  Ruben says he’s got dibs since he knew her long before JAntos arrived on the scene. He can give Maria a life of luxury she never even knew existed. “--Yeah?  Well, I say that you’re just upset that a mechanic could steal a modest, unassuming girl away from you, a guy who thought he could win her over with your kind of purchasing power!”  “—You’re no mechanic, Vargas!  You speak too well.”  “--BTW Jocko, you’re a married man and what’s that say about you?”

Oh, says Ruben, I’ve been honest about that with Maria.  I am getting a divorce and she knows that also.  Precisely because I am married there are certain limits. And I haven’t exceeded those limits.  “—Well you’ve exceeded mine!”  “--But I’ve never lied and hidden my past.  Can you say the same?  I know Maria better than you do.  She will leave you flat when she finds out you’ve lied to her!  Love is being sincere and I’ve been honest with her.”   “--Yeah, well, love also takes two people and you can’t seem to understand that she isn’t the least bit interested in you.”

It just breaks down into playground sass with JA and Rube screaming “You’re a liar!  No I’m not!” til Maria shows up and scolds Ruben for causing problems for her again.   She screams at him for trying to take away what little bit of pleasure in life she can still claim.  She doesn’t care if Jorge Alfredo has lied or not.  She is sick and tired of people trying to separate the two of them and she refuses to let anyone get between them ever!  She trusts him and will defend him whatever it takes!  The other three leave Ruben sputtering and stunned, with his male…er…ego dangling in the aftermath.
~~End parte 1~~

====================
P. 2

Rodrigo has found his way to the JNTRBar and is standing outside like he’s waiting for someone.  Little bar dude is outside getting a breath of fresh air and tells him to scoot cuz he’s under age and they don’t want to have to pay a fine because of some kid being where he’s not allowed.  Out walks El Coloso and Rodri confronts him.  El Col smarts off at him about being there without his daddy’s permission.  Naw, he’s a kid who was raised without his daddy.  Yeah?  Yeah, but now he came there to find him and he has.  Oh yeah?  “--Yeah.  It’s you, dude!  Now, what do you say about that, papi?”  No reason to invent things, little man.  “—My mom doesn’t lie!  She’s a good woman.  I am Gloria Reyes’s son!”  Col tells Little Bar Dude to scramola and make himself scarce.  Then he tells Rod rather rudely to go take a hike [vete a ver si ya puso la marrana].  “—Go take a flying leap at the moon.  I don’t have kids and I’m not your dad.”  “--You are! My mom has no reason to lie.  You’re my dad and you have to accept me.”  Coloso rolls his eyes.

In another part of the city, Ana and Roxana wait for Fernando to catch up with them.  They’re worried that he didn’t make it out.  But a minute later he comes prancing down the street and greets them.  He asks Ana if she’d keep Roxy with her since it seems the safest thing to do.  She says of course and adds no woman deserves what happened to Roxy.  She asks him how he made it out in one piece.  He quips that they call him mil escapes cuz he’s a whiz at escaping from cuckolds [cornudos]. He snickers and Ana slaps him upside the head.  “—You shameless jerk!”

Maria and JAntos are walking out to the sidewalk and overhear El Col refusing to allow even the minutest possibility that he could have a kid.  “—Go tell Gloria to stop filling your head with lies.  I don’t have any children!”  Rodri gets pissed and races angrily down the street.  JA walks over to him and punches El Col in the chest before racing down the street after Rodrigo.  Maria walks up to Coloso and tells him how disappointed she is at his denial of his son.  “—I thought that despite your impulsive behavior you were one of the good guys, so how could you talk to your son that way? You are going to regret this big time! Gloria has no reason to lie to you!  He is your son!”  She leaves him sputtering on and walks down the street to catch up to the others.

Back inside in Concho’s office, Vi lies about Maria jumping on her case for no good reason just because she told her she’s the owner’s daughter.  Daddy doesn’t buy it for a minute and tries to make ditzy daughter understand that Maria’s the star female performer at his bar.  He’s been very lenient with her and given her everything (translation: spoiled her rotten). “—But to continue that I have to fill up this bar and to fill up this bar I need Maria!”  “—Oh, Daddy there are lots of singers!” (Translation: Singers like Maria are a dime a dozen)  “—But none like Maria!  Look, I have a tour contracted and if I don’t fulfill the agreement I get sued!  If Maria doesn’t come back then you’ll suffer the consequences.  We all will, goddammit!"

Rodri races into the street blindly and nearly gets hit by a cupcake on rollerskates—er something that passes for a car south of the border and in Europe.  JAntos pulls him back as the driver curses him out and drives off.  “—What in the world’s gotten into you?”  Rodrigo cries and tells him that his mother is dying and his father doesn’t want him.  JAntos hugs him and tells him to cry as much as he needs to cuz there’s no shame in it; he hasn’t the words to comfort him, so just let it all out.  Maria looks on sympathetically.

Back in the bar, Sue and Ira sit together in a little alcove off to the side and hold hands while she sniffles.   He asks why she didn’t tell him the truth from the beginning.  Ira says because JAntos asked her as a favor.   But his innocence was contagious and things changed; she gave herself to him as a woman not as a paid companion.   He admits he fell in love with her the first time she crossed his path.  He gave himself to her out of love.  She says she felt that love and allowed herself to feel it for the first time herself.  It was something that was always prohibited for a woman in her line of work.    He kisses her and she…looks confused.

Down the street, Rodri asks JA why this has to happen to him and his mother.  He thought she’d always be there.  Well, all we can do is enjoy the moments left to us in things like this, advises JAntos.  Maria looks on approvingly with Rigo.  She asks if Gloria knows he’s left the house this time of night.  Nope.  Well Rigo has a cell phone he’ll let him use, but first he wants to treat them all to a meal.  He’s starving.  They get ready to head to the nearest restaurant, but before they can leave, they’re accosted by a gang of gun-toting small time thieves.  They want money or they’re taking them hostage.  Maria jumps in front of JA and says no way, buster.  JAntos gets pissed and throws her behind him.  Rigo saves the day by giving them his cell phone and wallet.  The thieves leave and he shows Maria and the others the wad of cash he had stashed under his cap.  They shake it off and look for a restaurant happy as clams.

At the bar in the guys’ dressing room the guys are marveling at Sue’s conquest.  Pichi?  and Little Bar Dude—Lalo-- walk in with the 411 on El Coloso having a son.  Ask him yourself.  El Col walks in and they give him a hard time when he tries to deny it.  Fernando is not happy about it, either.  He and El Col tell each other “—You’re the one to talk!”

In her apartment finally, Ana advises Roxy to find somebody better than Fernando The Playboy to get involved with.  They agree to forget the dude exists and look for greener pastures.

The mariachis pound the nearby pavement for serenade work and find a guy who got the boot from his novia.  Off they go and we get some more great tunes.

Meanwhile, Ira tells her life story to Sue and how she ended up as a hooker.  He understands her predicament since she was totally unskilled and had to feed her two little brothers.  Seeing them full and healthy gave her the strength to get through the night…..  He tells her he respects her and loves her; that he has no intention of ever leaving her.  They’ll make it through together from here on out…..They kiss on it.

While at the restaurant JAntos gives Maria grief for getting in front of that gun and making him look like a sissy.  Tuff tootsynails, sayz she, no way she’s going to let anything happen to the man she loves!  She’d rather die first than to live without him!  Like it or lump it!  He likes it (and Viewerville get JS’s trademark sparkling puppydog baby browns and dimples lighting up our screens.  Has the dude finally put on a few pounds to put a bit of healthy plump back into that smile of his?)

Since they no longer have a phone to call Gloria, Maria and JA decide that Rodri will spend the night with JA.  She tucks him into bed and JA discovers she’s lost a couple of buttons on her sweater.  He gives her one of his shirts to put on.  He catches her with her bared shoulders and can’t pull himself away.  (The guy is really trying to fight the itch and be a good boy.  Gotta give ol’ Santos his due.)  He dreams up a number of things to give himself a reason to chat while she modestly waits for him to give her a bit of privacy.  The important thing is that the way she defended him so many times during the evening really impressed him and he loves her even more for it.  He too would rather die than live without her.  Life would have no meaning for him if that ever happened.  They kiss again.

Once back home, Lewdes is ready to kick Maria to the curb, cuz if Elvira says she done her little girl wrong, well then she did!  Concho tells Lewdes and Lil’ Trampira that Maria is the soul of the bar and if she leaves it goes belly up. They lose everything and are off to the poor house.  (Wow a new concept for those two feline fatales!)  And, if she leaves, he’ll make his Lil’ Trampira beg forgiveness on her knees to get her back.  He’s had enough of both of them and leaves for parts unknown.

Maria, now back at home, finds Paloma up making candy to sell.  Maria says no way.  Her only job is to make good grades and get into college.  Besides, the candies’ she’s started might do better with Rodrigo.  Paloma is like forget that, dude!  He’s a jerk.  The dirtwad refused to be my chambelán and if I never saw him again it would be too soon.  Maria tells her the pain he’s been going through lately and Pal has a change of heart.  They finish the candy and put it into a colorful basket for the next morning.

JA, meanwhile, finds Rodri still up and gives him a little bit of friendly advice.  He isn’t a father himself yet, and truth be told, tho’ he hopes to be one day, the idea sort of scares him.  "--El Coloso is down deep—wayyyyyyyyy down deep—a good guy.  He’ll come ‘round eventually. You just need to give the guy a chance to get used to the idea.  He still doesn’t know about your mother's condition."

At the same time Fer and Oscar are having a heart to heart about Rodrigo.  He’s determined not to be trapped like so many other men by some woman lying about them having a son.  A kid is not something you raffle off.  (Or did I confuse that somehow?)

Susanito takes Ira back to her apartment and promises her that from this day forward things will be different for her.  She is certain that she will not be able to escape the life.  (Pimp alert!!  Now could Ruben gets his big bucks in part from pimping out prostitutes like Irasema in this barrio?)  They’ll make it through together from here on out, he promises her.

Maria puts Pal to bed and gives Mama her injection.  There are daughters and then there is… Elvira.

There are fathers and then there is …El Coloso.  El Col is in between tragos as he sits at his kitchen table and remembers his nasty chat with Rodri from earlier.   El Sr. Rooster who usually sits at the table and listens to all of Oscar’s poppycock is all ears again tonight.  Col has a pained expression on his face and throws his glass to the floor.  “--Gloria has no reason to lie to me.”  Cockadoodle do your duty, jerkwad.

Ok, boys 'n girls! The old homestead and my daughter's house were in the two St. Louis suburban tornados' pathway this time. Dunno about my old place but the hija's shook and wobbled while she and the hubby and resident feline all huddled in the downstairs bathroom, luckily protected on two sides by a dug in basement wall. Their north side is open and a walk out style. Which is fine since those things there come up a SW-NE direction. They miraculously had nothing but superficial damag, but all their neighbors have their roofs blown off and their garages blown in and the cars crunched by the garage doors, and some garages were even completely sucked away to who knows where; trees are all flattened and so are all the picket fences. The neighboring subdivision has whole houses gone. So, I am shaking off the shock and, having gotten my fill of old home news and weather accounts, I am dutifully returning to my recapping duties.

Scary stuff, Jardinera! Happy for your hija's relatively light damage and safe survival. Sad for all the neighborhood now dealing with this trauma.

Appreciate your recapping work and look forward to the part yet to come.

OMG I watched the Tornado in real time on Fox news the storm chasers had a camera and showed the whole thing. Thank God your daughter and her family are okay. I'm praying for all the others in Oklahoma and St. Louis so sad........
Just wanted to say thank you for translating everything on Caray,Caray. I dont speak Spanish but love the novellas and if it wasn't for you nice people on this blog I would'nt understand what was going on.....I'm learning a little Spanish while watching and understand some Italian so maybe some day I will know enough to blog and help somebody too lol

Jardinera- I am so glad to hear your daughter and her family are safe. What an ordeal for them and their neighbors. And thank you for taking the time to still recap, despite being all shook up with worry.

Terrifing thing to watch. Can't imagine being in it. I was glued to Fox and CNN and that horrible green sky. I grew up in earthquake country and we never knew when one was coming. Must be awful to know and not be able to do anything about it but hunker down and wait it out. Paryers to everyone involved.

Yikes, scary stuff! Glad that your loved ones are safe. I went through something like that as a kid and will never forget it. I heard the tornado pass overhead. The green sky is awful, but the sick tension in the air that goes with it is the worst.

Thanks so much for recapping with all this going on. I thought it was an interesting, action packed episode. The pace has finally picked up in the last week.

Thanks, guys. I just put up part one. This is a long one full of convo. Will try to break it down to bite sized bits, tho' that's hard for big mouth me! LOL!
==============
Welcome Anna Kelterborn! Glad to learn you're lurking out there! You make it worth the effort for us recapping.
=/: ? ))

OMG, Jardinera, that has to be one of the scariest tornadoes ever in this country. Glad to hear that your daughter and hers are alright. I'll comment later on the episode.

Okiedok. Done!

OkieDok, Jar. Terrific part 1 and (after sitting on the patio feeding blue jays and squirrels and watching the cat birds and grackles splashing in the bird bath) part 2.

I was clueless as to what was happening out in our mid-west, while I enjoyed the greenery, calmness and sunshine in the mid-Atlantic--even though it was hot. And for someone we know (once removed) to be in the middle of it....I'm relieved they came through with minimal damage. It's terrible for those who have suffered losses.

Yes, the chatted a lot on QBA last night, but we've heard the same long passages in other telenovelas, in other situations.

I thought I heard one of the guys (JA or Fer) tell Coloso to get an ADN test and he refuses. 'Cmon, big fella, it doesn't hurt and if it's not true (haha) you can wave that piece of paper around under everybody's nose. We know he has at least half a heart of gold, so in the end he will take care of Roddy.

I think JA *does* know Gloria is dying. Roddy tells him that right after the near crash with the foreign bug on wheels.

You could have left out the Derecho-daughter-slut routine and nobody would have missed it. It's *such* a cliche. And we certainly didn't need daughter telling papi that the Lt. was perfect for him. She doesn't *know* how loca she is.

I loved:
...JAntos suffers a nano-moment of indecision before going into defensive attack mode
...big boobed brat’s adolescent mischief and her endless vitriolic stream of verbal slanders
...Ruben says he’s got dibs [on Maria] since he knew her long before JAntos arrived on the scene
...The other three leave Ruben sputtering and stunned, with his male…er…ego dangling in the aftermath

I was gobbsmacked when after being held up by three thugs and one brandishing a gun they could happily go off and have dinner on hidden money. What? No police, no report? Just eat and everything will be fine.

OK, Beanie time. If they were so concerned about Gloria being called to let her know where Roddy was and the cell phone was given up, why didn't they stop off at Maria's first and call from there...oh, then we wouldn't have had the lost buttons scene. OK, I need a double-lined beanie. JA is bigger around in the chest than Maria. She could have just put his shirt on over her blouse and buttoned it up...oh, then we wouldn't have had JA fighting his itch.

Anita:
Guess I was too mentally fried to need the beanie this time. I only thought about the phone for a second and it slipped through the cracks-- I figured subconsciously it was too late to call the gal...at least I hoped so!

It has gotten interesting with the possibility of Santos returning to El Lay with Berto, and it should since we're about halfway through the 125 total and still traveling through 1.5 epis/night. I'm going to miss the music in this one, and frankly, Pablo shines with his character's shenanigans in this one. His timing is great and he's cleaned up his act--or have they used technology to do that?

Jardinera- Superb recap! I really enjoyed reading that Maria and Jantos are now a solid team: "She is sick and tired of people trying to separate the two of them and she refuses to let anyone get between them ever! She trusts him and will defend him whatever it takes!" Yay!

And it seems by the end Coloso was accepting that Rodi is his kid. Fatherhood will be good for him and will make him a better person, I think.

So, does Su think that Ira can quit, just like that? How is she supposed to pay her rent? Maybe she can get a waitress job at the bar?

Thank you for the recap Jar! Glad your loved ones are safe.

I made the mistake of changing the channel during the robbery scene and Maria being all brave. But it looks like it wasn't THAT exciting.

Was it just me or did Don Concho say "God d**n it" during his argument with Elvira? I am always fascinated to hear English being spoken in these TNs. I find it quite humorous.

Hopefully someone can knock some sense into Coloso to embrace fatherhood.
--TF

Hi TF! Yep, you did hear that said and I thought I'd put it in. Maybe it got lost in the virtual ethernet.

Vivi: Good question and I've wondered why we haven't seen Ira's pimp yet. I do believe he'd like to stay the night, but will he be brave enough to face off with Mama afterwards?
======
Sorry that the read was rough and confused in places. I've gone back and put in quotation marks and such to help things out.
======
The avance shows either JA telling Coloso he's a coward I think and Fer tells him to get a DNA test; he told him before few epis ago I think also.

Wouldn't it be interesting, since Maria is out of a job, for her to come to El Lay with Jorge Alfredo. It'll nevva happen, but it's interesting to speculate. Her semester probably isn't done yet.

Jar, you got the phone thing right. It was the folks in the novela that weren't thinking straight. Roddy can't live too far away from Maria's that they couldn't have just taken him home. A phone call and a knock on the door--same thing. It wakes you up. I guess Mejia just wanted that convo between just JA and Roddy about getting married and having hijos.

Would it be too much to ask novela writers to have at least one heroine really let the Ruben del Olmos have it with "I am a woman and not a piece of property you have any rights over! Now stop stalking me!"

Maria has to stop being so polite for a change and really give it to him with both barrels.

Thank you, Jardinera! Love your recaps and so glad to get some details that I totally missed.

I just hope that if, who am I kidding, WHEN Maria goes back to work at the bar she has the sense to demand twice her previous pay. (Well, I can hope, can’t I?) If La Trampira were to actually ask Maria for forgiveness on her knees, her whole existence in this TN might be worthwhile. And what’s this about being under contract for a tour? Do any of the performers know about this? Wouldn’t asking all the performers if they are available to tour be kinda sorta important to be sure of before signing a contract to tour?

Why oh why doesn’t Concho simply ban his slutty daughter from the bar? He knows she does nothing but make trouble. It’s his bar. All he has to do is tell the staff to escort her out whenever she shows up. Of course, then we wouldn’t have much of a telenovela to watch, but still.

Yeah, Maria could have gone further with making her point to Ruben, but give her credit for what she did, which is a heckava lot more than what she’s done up until now. What with the bitch slapping she gave Elvira earlier and now telling off Ruben, I say you go, girl. I think Santos could go a bit further, too, in pointing out to both his rivals that Maria has made her choice clear and lo siento, it wasn’t you, but he came close to saying that to Ruben tonight. Thank you, Vivi, for pointing out how much more solid JAntos and Maria have become. Of course when he drops that other shoe, we can pretty much guess that things won’t be so rosy …

Re. Susanito and Irasema: love, confusion, what’s the diff?

Hey, they’re a tough bunch in the DF. Getting mugged is just part of an evening out on the town, doncha know? You can’t let it spoil your fun. At least Rigo had the sense to be prepared for it, unlike JAntos, who apparently has never read a the ‘Dangers and Annoyances’ section of a Lonely Planet guidebook. As to why they couldn’t find another phone in a city of 9 million or any way to let Gloria know where her son was, well, it’s beanie time! The mom will worry so we’ll call her, no, we got mugged, so let’s just keep her son away all night, so she’ll worry even more. TN logic at it’s finest. I can’t wait for her to be freaking out in the morning when she realizes he’s not there.

I do think that El Coloso is edging toward accepting Rodri as his son, but since we have a lot of episodes to go, it’ll be a while before he actually does so. (BTW, there were about 160 total episodes aired in Mexico (just wrapped up this weekend), so if we’re at episode 53, we’re approaching 1/3 through it. Currently they are showing episodes that are about 25% longer per night. It’s anyone’s guess how much longer the mega episodes will continue or when this will finish up.)

Another BTW, maybe I misunderstood, but I thought that Ana told Roxana that Milamores was no good, but Roxana said she still wanted to be with him and Ana looked pained because she still wants to be with him. Interesting solution to park Roxana with Ana. I guess it never occurred to him that they might compare notes.

The attempted robbery scene was ridiculous. It would have made more sense if that were part of a scheme by either Ruben or Elvira, both of whom I think we will be stuck with until the end.

Had that become a kidnapping it would have been a way to unmask Santos, but then the ransom demand would have been outrageous.

Fernando needs to grow up just as much as Oscar does. He needs to realize that's it's not all about his need to rescue and probably that not all women can be rescued.

It's time Oscar took responsibility in his life. I love that he threw Vampira's skanky ass out of his place, so this is a beginning. Once he has to accept responsibility for Rodrigo he might realize that it's a losing battle to continue to pursue Maria.

As for Derecho having a daughter... OK. That isn't going to stop Curtis from pursuing him since she is so delusional it's pathetic.

Carolina:
I wondered if it was still being written and produced in Mexico. So it's 160? I could only find reference to the first 125. OMG. Must have been pretty popular south of the border. Dunno why Mejia gets no respect up here for this one. Well, at least we can expect one heck of a lot more fabulous singing from Dana and Pablo but how much more intrigue can we deal with? We realy need to start a new stage in this one. Hope the writers have something unexpected planned. And yeah, Roxy did say she thought he was sweet and sincere, and we know Ana wanted him for herself, but I figured that was the gist of the conversation and was running out of steam with this oversized no. of scene changes in the episodio.

Anita:

I also thought the idea of Santos taking Maria to EL Lay now that she's quit would be terrific!

UA:
I've tried to figure this out --when healthy ego and love interest turns into legitimate harassment or event stalking. I'm not legalistic nor a radical feminist who has stolen IMHO the legalistic words for themselves and stretched definition beyond natural bounds. I appreciate and love the romantic pursuit. It's necessary and flattering is nice.

Elvira is a stalker of sorts--not what we'd typically consider since she's just a female with financial advantages and a big ego to match as a rich, spoiled daddy's girl. Mischievous and bold, but not totally criminal. Santos has a macho's ego of his own that would prevent him from hitting the roof truly with Trampira--in addition to wanting to avoid problems with the police or losing his needed job and sense of newfound security.

Ruben is a type of pest that scares me--not the looney kind, the rich egotistical man who uses his money to buy what he wants and doesn't have the decency to back off and look to greener pastures when his presence is neither required or desired. He's past the bounds of the simple would be suitor who tries to get noticed so much he's always under foot and a major nuisance, past the bounds of socially acceptable interest and pursuit cuz he refuses to recognize or accept that he's been soundly and politely, told to not to bother any of them. He's a fifth wheel and won't let go--like a dog with a bone--that's when it's become harassment.

Ditto to the above advice to Concho to ban Elvira and Lourdes from the bar. Because Maria's resignation will only leave what she sees as a clear field.

Glad your family is OK.

I just ran across this wind map of the tornadoes from last night:

http://io9.com/a-humbling-map-of-real-time-wind-patterns-in-tornado-al-509037773

How scary!

Just wanted to say thanks to all of the recappers. DirectTV wigged out on Thursday night, but you kept me up to date.

Reuben would be horrified to find himself considered a pest. It beats me why he can't take no or get lost but keeps coming back for more. And since when did the guy who saw the girl first have rights to her. If that was true Reuben is still a loser since Oscar holds that distinction,

I could help but think how many inept thieves there are in the DF. This crew got as few bucks and cell phone after holding guns on a group of people. They also got tongue lashed by Maria and popped a few by JAntos. The last hold up guy found himself on the short end of a few well placed kicks and hits with a make up case netting him nothing for his trouble. The only thief who made out was the original one who got all of JAntos' money.

I also found it hilarious that after the encounter everyone went off for a post crime snack. Realistically I don't think too many people in Mexico these days even bother to report crimes.

We've never seen any evidence of pimps but Irasema saying she was afraid she could get out makes me think there must be someone running those girls. Maybe a female which would be the other woman who will try to come between our addled lovers.

I find it interesting that every time Oscar is having one of his musings about Rod and Gloria he always has that medal in his hand. It obviously means something to him or he would have tossed it like he did the glass.

A DNA test will end Oscar's doubts but he now going to have s tougher road to hoe since he rejected the boy so cruelly. JAntos' standing up for the boy and we can add counseling upset teens to his resume, will once again put him at odds with Oscar.

Loved how Concho ripped into the two sharks he lives with. He clearly told them to back off or else their cushy lives will be over.

Good for Concho there, but I doubt that will make much difference.

Great point about Oscar theoretically having the property rights, but since Maria is a human being capable of thinking and making decisions neither he nor Ruben have any rights to her.

Thanks Jardinera for a great recap under stressful circumstances. My esposo was watching the tornadoes on the web and reported to me that they looked horrifically bad. Is that redundant? Anyway, I'm happy for you that your daughter and family are ok. I'll take earthquakes over tornadoes any day.

My little cable box went on vacation on Wednesday so I completely missed all of Univision's TNs for two whole days. Thanks to all for keeping me up to date.

Oh how I wish I would have seen Maria giving it to Ruben. He gives me the willies!

Thanks to all of you for your well wishes--the hija's finally got power back tonight. Thanks also for lending yourselves to our conversations here. Glad to see proof of the lurkers really lurking, too and then getting bold enough to join in our fun with us.

Jardinera:

Thanks so much for this fab recap and I join everyone here in being glad to know that your daughter and family are ok after that horrific weather! You are a trooper to recap during all that stress.

I think Rueben might want Maria cause she is unattainable and I think he knows it. Yes, he stalks her every chance he gets and he fancies that once she sees what he can buy for her, he'll have her hook, line and sinker. He is so blind he doesn't see she will never be into him. If he ever succeeded in getting rid of JAntos he would see he would be dead to her, not that he isn't now, mind you. He is just an idiot.

The necklace that Oscar keeps holding is one he gave Gloria when they were going out when they were young. The last time they talked she took off that necklace and gave it back to him. I think he really still have feelings for her and I am wondering if her Papa ran him off back in the day. Did he have money or something and how is she maintaining her place to live and supporting Rodrigo? Have we seen her work or has it been mentioned what she did for work before her cancer diagnosis? She isn't getting anything from Oscar. I think Oscar will eventually accept the fact that Rodrigo is his son. He just has to process this information, and I think he knows deep down that Gloria wouldn't lie about that.

Even though Fernando is a scallywag I still like him. He does a lot for abused women. I wish they would show the back story about that.

I really hope Irasema and Susanito find happiness together. They so deserve it and I am really rooting for them.

I won't even comment on Trampira, cause everything I wanted to say has been said : )

Gloria's father definitely separated them by sending her away and telling Oscar she was no longer interested in him.

Her parents had money.

As for Fernando I think there had to have been domestic violence in his family.

Gloria did come from money and she still seems to be comfortable. She must live in the same area as the mariachi's because Rod goes to the same school as Paloma but her digs are much more upscale. Oscar who worries about women having a kid to trap a man and get money did say he doesn't know what Gloria wants because she didn't ask him for money. You'd think he would remember that she had been better off than him when they were young. Like someone said I too think he has some feelings for her. He may have buried them for years but they're still there.

I too think Fernando has been exposed to domestic violence. I don't think it was his father because he didn't seem bitter about the man beating on women but he was angry that he died chasing the american dream on the way to El Norte.

If we are only a third of the way through we should get some of the back stories that are interesting us before we get the HEA.

Jardinera - Thanks. Glad to hear your family in St. Louis is doing okay after the hurricanes. Enjoyed all of the recap, but when I came to "Pimp alert!!" I laughed way too loud for the office.

My favorite scene was Concho sticking up for Maria and putting Elvira in her place.

Maybe if Irasema takes off the wig and makeup, her pimp won't recognize her?

Gracias, Jarinera. I'm nearly a week behind on episodes and recaps, but getting caught up just in time for tonight. Your alliterations always crack me up! I also loved the "cupcake on rollerskates." I know some people love 'em, but I'd rather have a little more metal between me and the other drivers!
