PEAM, Tuesday 7/30/13 (#101): Like Sands Through the Hourglass
BONUS! See comments below from Tablet Jefa et al to fill in the missing pieces!
In Fernando's office, Xochi and Fernando console one another and bond tearfully over their bully-laden pasts.
The two annoying new secretarias, one of whom is named Lucinda and I don't know about the other one, are gossiping with Jessica. (Thanks to Madelaine for explaining that Jess is defending Xochi against them!) Ugh, do we have to get to know these couple of idiots? Remember when we thought Mari and Sue were nasty, petty Other Reindeer? They look like geniuses next to these two.
Whatever happened with the bank guy at Chatita's earlier, Avon (or Cardenas) has helped Chucho so he doesn't lose his home. Not that we had time to worry. I only caught the tail end of this but I assume he still has to pay it back to Avon and/or the bank. (Or if he already did pay up, maybe this wasn't a money issue so much as his name wasn't on the title? Whatever, it's fixed now.)
Julio is back in the office, at his desk. Cardenas presents him with his corrective action report, demerit, or whatever it is called. Let's call it the Bad Employee No Biscuit Warning. Julio signs it, grudgingly.
Jessica sees this and complains bitterly to Ricardo that Cardenas is sooo unfair. He made her sign a No Biscuit Warning too. Ric disagrees that it's unfair to expect employees to follow the rules and Cardenas is very even-handed in his enforcement.
At Pointy Trees Manor, Eli, Vero, and their lawyers "negotiate." I didn't hear what, if anything, they decided about Valentina's custody; right now they're focused on splitting the loot. Vero is her usual greedy self, thinking she should get pretty much all of everything, and Eli comments on her grasping attitude. He says he's not in love with her any more, woohoo! Cynthia (V's lawyer) and Eli's guy say they'll make a complete inventory of every item in the house, right down to the toothbrushes, and figure out how to divvy it up. ("Circular saw" is my vote.) If all goes well, it will be done in two months. And then there will be the lawyers' fees. Vero says Eli will pay for the whole thing! (Why should Eli pay Vero's lawyer??)
Back at the office, Chucho encourages Julio to get a grip on himself and pull himself up by the bootstraps and buck up and stop crying in his beer and get on with his life.
Alma is updating Rogue on all that happened during his absence from the office. He promises to read her detailed report later. (LOL, right.) Then he suddenly gets nervous and maudlin and makes weird comments about how grateful he is to her and he hope nothing happens to her. Cantú looks worried as Rogue babbles. (By the way, Pancho agreed to reinstate Rogue. No manches.) After Alma leaves, Cantú is like, what was that all about? Rogue is upset about whatever it was that they saw at Uri's suite. Cantú is also nosy about whether or not Rogue has something going on with Vero.
After all that fuss with the divorce lawyers, Eli asks Vero if she can take care of Valentina after school today because he has to do something. Vero is sarcastic but grudgingly agrees to let Minerva watch Vale for a while. (Vero must have some special bitchery planned that she can't reschedule.)
Alma and Chucho compare notes and agree that Rogue's amiability today has been very suspicious. "This is like the calm before the storm," he says. Then he says he has to meet someone (mumble mumble, no captions, thanks again, Comcast!) for lunch and Alma says haha, you don't have to ask my permission! He leaves and she stares blankly into space, er, I mean gazes thoughtfully into the hazy hopeful future.
Malvino and Calavera follow Chucho's taxi (driven by you-know-who, who is happy to get paid for a change). They aren't particularly discreet and don't even wear wigs or Groucho glasses, so Chucho spots them immediately and even points them out to the taxi driver. Chucho chases them on foot and almost catches them (by "almost catches them" I mean "almost touches their car in a disrespectful manner") while they back away and peel out of the parking lot.
Next time: Uri says, "He saw you?! This changes everything!" Today's the day and he's gonna kill Alma! (OR IS HE?)
I see a gun with a laser sight, but Google just told me that you can put laser sights on a paintball gun, so here's hoping he's only planning to ruin her dress.

And NEXT Tuesday I'm spending the day at Six Flags, so I'll probably be doing that recap in Spin-O-Vision. Wheeee!
Paty was in Alma's office trying to be humble and beg for forgiveness yet again. I still don't believe that lying scank because if she was so forthright she would share with Alma that she is trying to rope Rogelio by getting pregnant.
The lawyers for Elias and Vero were once married to each other and it seemed as if they were going to rekindle the romance in front of Vero and Elias. They also mentioned that sometimes exes get back together. It went completely over Vero's head. She was her usual cold, bitchy self.
Xochy told Jessica that her friendship to Jessica was important to her and Jessica thinks that she is getting over Fern. (I dozed off) If I missed anything, someone please fill in.
Between you and TJ you didn't miss a thing. No worries!
I wonder what it is that Yuri has and showed to Rogue and Cantu? I thought I heard Rogue say he didn't want Alma hurt? I really hope it is a paint gun and not a rifle.
Oh, there was a bit where Ferny was talking to Alejandra, the hooker with the heart of gold, about Rogue and his mis planes. She didn't look happy. I wonder if she will spill to Rogue what Ferny told her.
I liked that little talk that Ferny and Xochi had. They ARE like two lost souls that found each other, her Mama, his brother, both terrible, but they found each other Ferny and Xochi and I loved that hug they had. It was very sweet.
I too think that Jess is finally over Ferny and I liked how she defended Xochi against the two chisme sisters!
I am glad that this apt. problem has been fixed. I too thought Chucho had made payments on it a while back, but maybe just the electric and the gas? Now he will have his mortgage payment. I really liked how he worked it out with the bank guy. He was so terrified of Chatita, lol.
Can someone tell me who that picture that Chatita talks to all the time? It looks like a little boy? Was that her little boy that died? I wish they would do more of her back story.
Thanks for this great recap, despite the technical difficulties Julie : )
It was cute when Jesus was telling Chatita that their problem was that they just hadn't had any time for mother son talk lately and then she blessed him before he left.
Looks like obnoxious Yuri strikes tomorrow. On we go!
Jarifa
I liked the scene with the two lawyers getting cozy. And I really liked it when Lawyer Cynthia asked Vero "why are you being so aggressive?" Yeah, why you beeeyatch? I wish Elias would stop caving to her every demand.
Stoopid Comcast. Nevertheless Julie, you sure made the most out of the episode parts you DID get to see. So thank you! And thanks TJ for jumping in with the earlier details.
"Bad employee, no biscuit warning." Great.
"(circular saw is my vote)" also great.
"special bitchery planned that she can't reschedule." Pure genius.
Actually I'd advise taking a circular saw to Vero. For some reason, she angers me even more than Paty. Her narcissism and sense of entitlement is something we all run into in our real lives (don't we?...is it just me?) whereas crazy kooky Pati still seems like more of a comic figure. Vero, in my experience, is all too real so she really bugs me.
Well, enough personal confessions. Thanks for spinning gold out of some very scanty dross this time, Julie.
Anyway, thanks, Julie & TJ, for hammering out the recap! I think you got pretty much everything. I was confused about Alma saying she had "already considered" Xochi for Don Gil's position, and Xochi going all deelyboppers -- does "considered" mean something different in Spanish?
And thanks Madelaine for the additional details, especially that Jess was defending Xochi to the chisme twins. I didn't get that. (I was still fiddling with the recorder during that scene.) I will fix that in the recap.
The picture Chatita talks to sometimes (part of her little shrine) is St. Thomas. I'm not sure which St. Thomas.
Judy, I know what you mean about being more bothered by Vero than by Paty. In addition to the reasons you give (like Vero being more like a real person and Paty more of a caricature), there's also the fact that Vero has a child. Granted, Paty is also hoping to have a child - but maybe that will change her for the better. (Obviously it didn't do Vero any good!)
Blue, that's an interesting question about "already considered." I guess Xochi took it (and I would also take it) to mean "you're among the people who came to mind," which is very flattering. However, because it's past tense, it MIGHT imply "already considered and rejected." I don't think that's what Alma meant, but if I were Xochi I think I'd want to clarify that before going all deelyboppers.
Daniela, thanks for the tip about tv-porinternet.com.
Thanks so much about St Thomas. I have never seen a picture of him like that. It looked like a small boy. It was interesting.
I'm right there at the "Slap Vero Silly" table. She's unbearable to watch. I also hate the way Elias caves, but he loves Val so much, he's willing to do anything and Her Scuminess is taking that to the farm on him. May she rot in...well, you know. At this stage, I can see no "redemption" for her as she seems to be getting worse and worse. Val needs to be removed from her NOW!
If the lawyers ( weren't they cute) were worth their salt, they would point out to her that this is a mutual divorce. She fell in lurrvvvv with someone else before Elias fell out with her, so thinking she gets money, house, etc. from the other party seems rather ludicrous. Give her the stupid house, then tell her to get a job so she can pay for the up keep. Boy, that would be something to watch.
Since I'm a FerChi fan, i loved, loved that scene in the office as they bonded over their issues. That hug was a freeze frame moment ( and she's such a little thing). Saw pictures of the actress in an article about her wedding, and she is such a knockout.Just wish they would let the character take on more of her natural look ( the Natasha version). But I think they want us to see Ferny falling for Xochi as she is now.
You know, if the bad guys in this thing keep relying on those two bumblers to do the work for them, we can pretty well be assured nothing will ever go right. The size of that case last night and Rog's reaction--what is Yuri using, a bazooka? Need to end that plot point--getting stupid and dragging out. Move on.
Daisynjay
I was hoping Uri had a trombone in that case...
Thanks, Julie and all those who had your back. Our cable company does weird things but yours wins the prize.
I'm not so sure about St. Thomas now. I found three well-known St. Thomases (More, Aquinas, and the Apostle) but no pics of a child. Either this is a lesser-known St. Thomas, or that picture is of her son or some other boy and she refers to him as her little saint??
St. Thomas More is the patron saint of adopted children, though, which sort of fits in with Chatita's motherly habit of taking in strays.
JudyB & Daisynjay - ITA about Vero. It's painful to watch Eli cave when she is the one who initiated the divorce; she should be paying for it or at least her lawyer. I do think her semblance to reality makes her character so reprehensible.
Say... wasn't it Martha who introduced Vero to Cynthia? I wonder if that will become relevant.
And why isn't there a major manhunt out for Martha?? Did I miss something?
Interesting how a particular character can trigger all kinds of over-the-top emotional reactions. It's just a TN, it's just a TN!
If Vero and Elias were smart, which they are not, they would both get new lawyers. I don't think those exes and their rediscovered luuuuv are going to be working in the interests of their clients at all! And I'm disappointed that Eli caved on the house without demanding sole custody of Val in return. Asking to be able to see her whenever he wants? Not good enough! That still gives Vero way too much leeway.
If Elias ends up with nothing, is he going to have to move in with Chatita again, or into the apartment he bought for Panfilo and Mari?
I hope she didn't get fired! The former lawyer that is. She was the adorable Adoracion on UFCS.
I wonder if that means that Cynthia is NOT friends with Martha.
If that's Helena Guerrero, IMDB says the actress went to work on Libre Para Amarte, so she's probably doing okay.
I had the same thought about Vero recouping the lawyer fees through a higher alimony payment, but the fact is, if Eli is paying her lawyer, then the lawyer has little reason to negotiate a good deal for Vero. Which suits me fine. Just seems kind of fluffy-headed on Vero's part to suggest it.
La Tempestad! That joke flew right over my head last night! LOL!!
I had another random unrelated thought. I assume Delia knows that Yuri and Rogue both have the same lawyer. Did it ever occur to Yuri, Rogue, or Cantu for that matter that this sort of ties all their fates together?
If both R and Y are exonerated, they can claim that having the same lawyer was just a coincidence and they didn't even know one another until after they were accused; but if any evidence is found against one of them, it will be harder for the other to wiggle out of it. I think.
Julie, great recap and, ya know, I've never heard a good word said about Comcast anywhere. Nothing like a monopoly, eh? And thanks to TJ for filling in. You both did a great job of keeping it brief and straightforward.
Re Vero and Elias, I've heard from guys who've been through it that in some jurisdictions the "economically dominant" partner, in other words the one who has a job, has to pay both lawyers and almost always gets hit hard on "support" both for the ex and any kids. Vero reminds of the mother and daughter parasites on Refugio.
Emilia and I noticed that Elias's lawyer's hair seems to get more Grecian Formula'd every time he shows up.
Chatita reminds me quite a bit of the lady who managed one of my apartments in college. She'd feed me dinner from time to time and I'd take her to the grocery. She was real old back then, like 65, and I'm sure she's gone on to her reward by now.
Isn't the photo Chatita talks to her deceased son? That was the impression I had, though it's like the Santo Nino de Atocha of Juan Querendon or La Virgencita in most of the others.
Seems to me that Cardenas is the only grown up employed by Avon. I have to wonder if the real Avon reviewed any of the scripts before granting permission to use the name.
Enough drivel. Howdy to all and thanks again to Julie and TJ.
Blue, surely we will get a gun fired in the next 100+ episodes, right? We've just got to! Maybe Uri will shoot himself in the foot or something.
Blue Lass, I hear you. I say we expedite getting you that Bingo win.Think it's safe to assume Patimelt may be faking a pregnancy soon ( although it may turn into a real one which could be another Bingo square--unwanted pregnancy by girlfriend), Rog has a decent set of stairs, well actually about the only decent set, so we need Vero and Pati to get into one of their pushing matches and Vero caj take the tumble ( we almost had that once, I say stop teasing and just do it.)
As for the gun. I'm hoping that ISN'T a bazooka in that case. Maybe the kids would get water pistols...would that count?
The little boy in the picture: There is the one picture of Chatita's son that I think we saw early on, but he was older in that shot. Maybe this is a younger version of him? Have to say, she seems much better in remembering names and people than she use to be. I still lean to her memory loss being more of a reaction to something sad or frightening vs. alzheimer's or dementia. When she got lost, she really seemed to panic, and that could be a reaction to something similiar that had happened before that she blocked out. Wish we would get more history on some of these characters.
Julie, on Marta. Out of sight, out of mind. Face it, did anyone ever follow up with having Val see someone to help her thru that trauma? They are right back to bouncing her around house holds and sitters while they do their thing. These adults need a good shaking sometimes.
Daisynjay
Vero's logic about getting the house because Val "lives there" is skewed. Val much prefers to live with Papa Jesus.
Julie, loved:
Pointy Trees Manor.
“I see a gun with a laser sight, but Google just told me that you can put laser sights on a paintball gun, so here's hoping he's only planning to ruin her dress.”
“. . .doing that recap in Spin-O-Vision. Wheeee!”
From yesterday’s comments: Sylvia, I just assumed Xochi didn’t have a degree. I couldn’t see her managing the college experience with her extreme shyness. I thought she just went to secretarial school—but I could be wrong.
I notice that when Jesus needs someone to take care of Vale he never says he’ll ask Vero, it’s always Elias.
I still say that Elias isn’t necessarily the legal father because Jesus never gave up parental rights. Could be different in Mexico.
Mike: I thought that was a pic of her son, too.
I think moving Vale around was Vero’s fault. Sometimes she seems like she really loves Vale and she’ll be a good mother and then she’ll turn around and be a real selfish witch (with a capital B).
Had Time Warner cable for a long time. Worst customer service ever—well, except for Chase Bank. I switched to FiOS.
Nanette
But some consideration should be given to her time at Avon and her demonstrated skill.
Ah, just saw Vivi's comment. Secretarial school it was then. Not even close to a Master's degree.
It drove me crazy for two hot NY minutes to recall where Veronica's lawyer had been in before. She's none other than Arely, Spare Girl from CME. Who knew she could be funny, despite the wig.
But if you're asking if there was anything worth seeing, the answer is no. The scene was very brief. Either they edited it down to nothing for US broadcast or there was never much to it in the first place. (Or maybe we're to assume that Chucho and Alma are very efficient!)
Apparently it was satisfying enough for Chucho and Alma, but not for the viewers!
Julie--buen hecho, and TJ, great follow-up.
Thanks for saving me some time.
Nanette
