Porque el Amor Manda #114: Are You Lonesome Tonight?

Veronica does not succeed in smothering Rogue, more's the pity. She promises to pick Vale up at school. (Will she be able to find it?) Rogue points out that she keeps talking about how much she loves her daughter, yet she still uses her as a tool. He may not have human children, but he has Sanson, and -- Vero interrupts that he's going to come home one day and find that dog in the oven. What a fun couple.

As if Rogue giving advice on family life isn't bizarre enough, Paty's back at Alma's, giving her a lecture on romance. Men! First they're all blue-princey, and then before you know it they're too busy to see you. And caray, the perils of the long-distance relationship! (All the way across Monterrey, she means.) Love is like a plant! It must be carefully tended! Alma tells her not to be such a Debbie Downer...but she does look worried.

Cantu shows up uninvited at Rogue's (does Cantu show up any other way?) with a flower for Domitila and some news for the plague twins: he's the new owner of Chatita's apartment. So now he's an absentee landlord AND he chews with his mouth open. Vero remarks grudgingly that he's not as dumb as he looks. (He IS as disgusting as he looks, though. Can't Domi do any better than that?)

Jess flaunts her ring while Cardenas does the happy dance in Alma's office. Fer sincerely congratulates Jessica: that Cardenas, he's won the love lottery! No, says Jess; I'M the one who won the lottery. Que cute!

Meanwhile, Maricela is having a terrible, horrible, no-good very bad day: now that she's admitted she likes ranchera music and greasy tacos, nobody will eat OR dance with her. Ricardo tears up her picture. Alma calls her on the carpet for screwing up a memo and she burst into noisy tears.

Don Augusto tells Jesus that his project has to be ready in ONE week, not two, and to use Useless Elvis to speed up the project -- although if he's as much of a zero as Augie says, it's not clear how that could possibly help. Elvis continues to act like the world's biggest tick. He mocks Don Augie behind his back, hits on all the women, and shows way too much cleavage in the office. He tells Chucho that no expenditures are approved without his signature, so good luck asking for that loan to help out his little old ladyfriend. Later we hear Augusto on the phone telling someone named Otilia that yes, he knows his duty, but the kid is a TOTAL IDIOT. I think we can see where this is going.

Alma drags Rogue in to see a presentation by Fernando and Xochi about the paperless office. Yeah, juarever, this is boring; who cares about trees? I do, says Alma. They bicker in front of the projector screen and Rogue reminds Alma that he can have her fired. She tells him he'll have to explain that to Pancho, Pancho Lopez and hands him the phone. Ja ja. Back to our previously scheduled PowerPoint. Zzzzz....

Later on Fer has a crisis of conscience and goes to see Jesus, confessing that Rogue has been plotting to separate him and Alma, and that it may have something to do with Uri. He can't say anything else because he doesn't want his brother to go to jail. Jesus gives him expression #3 and a stern lecture about how if anything happens to anyone he loves because Fernando withheld information, he will be complicit. Fer goes off to "think" about it.

In other news:

- Jesus has tummy trouble because he never has time to eat because all the females in the world are either depending on him or trying to get him arrested. In addition to the gurgling tummy, he now has bad knees from all the running around and has to use crutches. QTH?

- Panfilo shows up at Chatita's and she pretends not to know who he is. What are you selling? I'm not selling anything! Yes, you are: you're selling lies and betrayal, and I don't want any! SLAM!

- Astudillo reassures Jesus that Vero probably won't be able to prove her charge of assault, but he may want to think twice about the oral judgment. Who knows what that crazy minx will say to a judge? Now, about my fees...

- Jess and Susana go down to the cafeteria for lunch, and there's a new chef...Don Gil!

Blue Lass, thanks for the recap and your very funny commentary.

For me the best parts were:

Chatita letting Panfilo have it.

The snarl on Jesus's lips when he found out Melquiades has to sign his loan.

Veronica identifying Rogelio as "the bad man" when introduced to him.

I didn't like Jesus with his "gastritis" and the crutches. I hope we don't end up at the hospital again.

Anyway, onward to a week of new episodes!

Jarifa

Gracias, Blue Lass! I love the terrible, horrible, no-good very bad day reference.

I was so confused about the crutches. Did FC really injure himself so they had to throw in a quick explanation, or is this actually part of the story? He couldn't grab a sandwich while picking up the crutches?

I did enjoy the scene where Moronica was smothering Rogue. Too bad she didn't have more success.

In the meeting when Elvis's phone rang, Augusto called him "mi politica ". Does that indicate that they are in-laws? I'm watching last week's epis.

I like Alma so much better now that she is standing up to Rogue!

Great recap, Blue Lass. I was completely confused by the crutches, too. I really loved Chatita letting Panfilo have it. She should have hit him with the chamber pot. Loved your comment about "expression #3". Just great! Sami

Julia, I think that means "my policy" with regards to cel phones, but I didn't watch the scene again so I could be wrong.

Elvis's cleavage, LOL

Didn't someone here mention that Fernando Colunga really hurt his knee on set at some point? It must have been very sudden because the writing seemed so haphazard, with Jesús just rapidly repeating that it was due to all the back and forth running around, as if the writers were not available and FC had to think of something to say on the spot!

Blue Lass- You somehow made a not so fun episode amusing.

Things are not going well for Chucho right now. Poor guy. Alma needs to stop worrying about him not spending enough time with her, and start working on helping him out of some of these jams he's in.

Maybe she could take over the Chatita (and Rai) apartment problem for Jesus. That would leave him to deal with his work issues, and the Moronica issue.

The crutches issue came out of left field, so I am going to assume FC hurt himself for real and they had to write it in. It does fit in with the storyline of everything going wrong for him right now.

Thank you, Blue Lass for making a filler funny.
I love the reference to Elvis as the world's biggest tick.
I'm glad that I'm not the only one who was confused with the crutches. I'm thinking that Colunga hurt himself and for some reason it couldn't have been slipped into the storyline.
I was mouthing- "the bad man" when Val was introduced to Rogue. I had to laugh out loud. Your recap was better than watching the actual episode.

Blue,

Thanks so much for this most amusing recap, loved the Elvis title and what you said about Elvis in the storyline, about the exposed chest, lol.

I'm with Vivi, I think Alma needs to help Chucho with some of his problems.

I do like Alma standing up to Rogue and telling him to call Pancho Lopez, lol. See how quick he backed off? He so doesn't want to go there.

I can't stand the fact that Cantu now owns Chatita's apartment. We just know he is going to try to evict her on Rogue's advice as revenge. Boo Hiss. I hope Chucho finds some way to stop it with Alma's help.

Poor Mari, I feel so bad for her but it's time for her to tell everyone else and get it over with. Ricardo can't be mad at her forever.

About FC and his injury. He did in fact get injured on the set and had to have surgery on his knee. That's why he's on crutches, but he says it is healing nicely.

Blue this was such a clear recap, my favorite line is you noting what a fun couple Rog and Vero are after you describe all the obnoxious things they do and say. I did rather think that Rog's parenting skills with Sanson are superior to Vero's with Valentina. Even he realizes that.

I wondered if Colunga was hurt in the wrestling scene with Yuri since they both did their own stunts. I feel bad about the acid stomach part though. Maybe he is allergic to Augie and especially Melquiades.

Blue Lass thanks for the recap. And thanks everyone for clearly up why FC was on crutches.

You know Virus is bad when Roger is pointing out how she is using her daughter.

Vivi - Alma should help Chucho but that would require communication and TNs love messing with that.

I like how the writers keep toying with us, making us think Xochi is going to have some big makeover, but really, she just stays the same. When Fern broke her glasses, we all thought this would either mean contact lenses for her, or at the least some small cute glasses. Plus, she got the new job, meaning no uniform, and the assumption was that she’d start dressing fashionably. But, NOPE! Her non-uniform clothes are just as dull and non-form-fitting as her uniform was. And the new glasses Fern got her are just as big, and even more bold, than her last pair (although the new pair are really "in" with kids right now). LOL! Nicely done writers. Xochi’s transformation will be internal, not external.

Also I forgot to thank TJ and Pablo for this recap. TJ I loved your new moniker for Virus, Moronica!

Yes Vivi I do like that Xochi's transformation is more internal than external.

Thanks Karen, but I can't take credit for Moronica. :-) I "borrowed" it from someone else.

I noticed, too, that Xochi's new glasses match her old uniform. You'd think by now she'd be tired of hot pink!

Where are my manners? Thank you, Blue Lass.

Watching Rogue trying to interfere with Vero when she was on the phone with Valentina reminded me of the early episodes, when Paty would do the same to Rogue. Is Rogue now in the same position Paty was in - subconsciously hoping to get caught?

Slightly off-topic but perhaps of interest --

Here is an article on telenovelas that some of you might enjoy:

http://chronicle.com/article/Teaching-Telenovelas/140017/

It appeared last month in The Chronicle of Higher Education and was written by scholar of Latino Culture, Ilan Stavans. Prof. Stavans happens to be the son of 50-year veteran novela actor, Abraham Stavans, so he knows a thing or two about the soft white underbelly of the genre.

I was intrigued to see the same Ilan Stavans quoted in a piece in the New York Times a few days ago in a discussion of law, religious freedom, personal names and culture.

http://tinyurl.com/lpfzzgn

[You may, perhaps, have been following the saga of the Tennessee judge who changed a baby's name from "Messiah" to "Martin" and is now being challenged by the ACLU. It turns out, by the way, that there were 762 babies named "Messiah" in this country last year, putting it between "Scott" and "Jay" in popularity.

Anyway, Prof. Stavans weighs in on all the boys named "Jesús," for example, in the Latino world.

And in the same article, I learned that in the Anglo world, it was considered sacrilegious to name your baby girl "Mary" up until the 12th century.]

OK, Let's put on the Elvis voice & sing it in his honor:

"Are you lonesome tonight?
Did you have a big fight?
Tell me dear are you lonely tonight?"

Re: the previews. I didn’t think Vero could sink any lower!!!! There’s no way a court would allow her to take her child out of her home to live in her extra-marital lover’s home!!!! I’m so disgusted by her.

I can’t believe Cantu owns Chatita’s apartment.

So glad Chatita shut the door in Panfilo’s face.

I was the one who mentioned FC’s injury originally. He was injured during the fight scene with Ury with one of the body slams. Madelaine thanks for the update.

I think Fern didn’t realize Xochi would not be wearing a uniform anymore and bought her new glasses with that color scheme in mind.

Nanette

Wow, thanks for the connection, Novela Maven, to Ilan Stavans. He is a fascinating person to know about.

The Tennessee judge sounds awful. I personally hope the ACLU takes him/her on to strike down such prejudiced decisions that only belong to the family naming a baby. I read years ago about a German court striking down a naming of a baby named Che using the reasoning that it was just like hey you in Spanish and refusing to allow its use on a birth certificate.

Blue Lass, I'm late to the party but just wanted to say thank you for the fun and enjoyable recap. Way to highlight the good bits and sweep away the dross. You are so good at that.

Rogue giving Vero parenting advice? How amusing that even he thinks she's a rotten mom. As you say, what a fun couple.

Jess and Cardenas...I must thank the writers for throwing this unlikely pair together.
