PEAM, Tuesday 9/10/13 (#131): Happy Birthday, Valentina!

Or, "Where's a Bucket When You Need One?"

They always say to accentuate the positive. If I do that with tonight's recap, it will be very, very short and Morónica will be the only character in it.

Here goes: Vero has Chucho arrested for visiting his daughter on her birthday, and then she keeps the necklace that Paty sent back to Rogelio and wears it in front of him and then makes him wear it and drives him crazy wondering how she got it.

That's it! Good night!

Okay, here's the rest:

Chucho attends Valentina's birthday party even though it violates his restraining order and gets him arrested. His innards churn painfully. Everyone cries and scolds Vero and tries to comfort Valentina. Eli takes Vale away with him (over Vero's protests, of course).

Alma angrily shoves Vero and they trade insults and then Vero calls her a cualquiera and Alma gives her a lame slap that doesn't look better even in slow-motion. Vero tries to strike back, but Alma stops her. She also warns Vero that Rogelio might be her ally for now, but he'll eventually betray her if he hasn't already. Vero vows revenge.

Fernando really wants to talk to Xochi (who stills wears Avon pink), but she refuses. She finds out that Díscua came to the office and was overheard telling Alma that Fernando must be told the truth. Angrily, she calls Alma, who is too upset about Chucho's arrest to talk about Díscua now.

Díscua takes the newspaper article to Rogelio's house and confronts him with it. He admits to planting the story, but says Díscua has to leave Fernando alone now because he's a married man and she's a brainwasher and a fanatic. She tells Rogelio that he just can't stand not being able to control Fernando himself. Rogue says no, Fernando's happy, he's with Sushi who's kinda ugly but she's smart and Fernando loves her. Díscua says she loves Fernando, and Rogue taunts that it's too late now.

At the police station, Chucho explains about the DNA test and how he couldn't let his daughter down on her birthday. They explain to him that it's against the law to violate a restraining order, so they had to arrest him. He can see his lawyer, but he still has to spend at least the next 48 hours in a cell. His innards churn painfully.

Eli takes Valentina to sleep at Chucho's house. Vero calls, and he refuses to tell her where they are and hangs up on her. Vale is probably trying to decide whether or not today's birthday party was worse than the one Mad Marta gave her.

Alma is allowed to visit Chucho, but only briefly. After the guard makes Alma leave, Chucho's innards churn painfully, again, and the accompanying cutesy sound effect is really getting on my nerves because that kind of pain is not cute at all.

Alma cries in her car because she can't help Chucho out of his trouble. Paty calls, and Alma says she's going to Chatita's to see Valentina.

Chucho's innards continue to churn painfully. He calls for help. The guard responds carelessly from a distance: you guys are always complaining and crying for your mommies.

Xochi tracks Díscua down to ask, doesn't your church teach you not to mess with married men? Díscua says that love is even more powerful than religion. She would have gone to Fernando sooner, but she didn't find out until the day of the wedding. She tried to hold herself back, but she couldn't. Xochi doesn't accept this, because she knows Díscua came to the office today looking for Fernando. "You're trying to take him away from me!" she accuses. Díscua wink-winks nervously. Xochi mentions the article about the fraud. Díscua blames that on Rogue. Xochi says Díscua's not the victim here; Xochi is. People have been mocking her for her entire life and now they're going to meet the real Xochi!

Virus and Rogue toast to Chucho's eternal suffering. Virus also proposes a toast to Alma's eternal suffering. Rogue hesitates, then shrugs and agrees. They drink to many years of bitterness and living hell for both Chucho and Alma, and to Chucho's death.

Chucho does look as though he's dying, in spite of the corny sound effect of his rumbling gut. He's writhing on the floor and sweating, his face turning a vivid color, and he's coughing up raspberry jam, oops, I mean blood.

Fernando talks things over with Alejandra and says that Díscua was his first love. Alex reminds him that he's married to Xochi and he mustn't break her heart.

Díscua tells Xochi that Fernando was her first love and they are united forever. (Thank heavens this is NOT true. Can you imagine what the world would be like if everyone ended up with their first love?) Díscua says she'll fight for Fernando. They agree to let him choose.

Chatita serves a nice-looking dish of something to Alma, who's too agitated to eat. Can I have her supper? Alma tells Chatita and Paty about Rogelio stealing Valentina's doll. Alma tries to call Chucho's lawyer, and he's not answering.

Vero wears the necklace in the bedroom. Stunned, Rogue wonders how she got it. She puts the necklace on him (just the way he put the collar on his dog) and asks, "are you ready for me? And ONLY for me?" She muffles his protests with her tongue.

Valentina is asleep. Elias sneaks over to Chatita's for a snack. Alma is worried because she can't get Delia on the phone and she knows Chucho's having stomach aches, too. Paty and Chatita and the chamberpot go to Chucho's to watch over the sleeping birthday girl while Alma sits with Eli and tells him how good he is for Paty.

Xochi continues to give Fernando the cold shoulder at home. She climbs into bed and tells him to "turn out la luz." I don't think he gets the joke.

Paty shares with Chatita her unhappy memories of her own parents' divorce. Chatita thinks Paty is just the person to talk to Valentina.

Early morning: Chucho is still on the floor, moaning and barely conscious, with blood dribbling from his mouth. The guard is just about to look into his cell when he is called away.

Panic washes over Chatita and Alma. They wake Eli to tell him they're going to the police station to check on Chucho. (Are all the phones broken? Never mind.)

Susana arrives at work very early, because she wasn't able to sleep. She and Pánfilo flirt.

Jess tells Cardenas it's time they picked a new wedding date. I guess her mother's doing better. Cardenas says he's taking the delay as a sign that they should wait and get to know one another better before getting married. What a concept! Jess frets.

Still at home, Rogue calls Susana and asks where she sent the necklace. Sue says she sent it to Paty, just as Rogue asked. Eavesdropping Vero gloats.

Xochi continues to rebuff Fernando until her patience wears thin. At last she blurts, "Díscua assured me she's not a swindler, and she's going to fight for your love!"

Paty talks to Valentina about her parents' divorce. She says the fighting got to be so bad that she begged her father to leave her mother, just to put an end to the fighting. Valentina says her parents broke up, but they still fight anyway, plus now she can't see Daddy Jesus either. Paty tries to cheer her up with some perfume. She has to go to work today - and she doesn't even know what today's job will be.

Chucho is unconscious. There's a little puddle of blood near his mouth. Alma and Chatita are hysterical with fear. He doesn't stir, despite their screams which would wake the dead.

Next time:
Chucho has an operation. WILL HE KICK THE BUCKET?

Hey, did Moronica read our comments about what she should do with the necklace? I haven't gotten too far into this episode yet, but I did just see the cachetada. Go Alma!!

Sylvia, not only did she read our comments - she even went a step beyond.

I don't like what she's doing to her exes and her kid, but I love what she's doing to Rogue.

Oh goodie! (About the Rogue part.) Still not there yet...

Recap is done now. I don't think tomorrow is going to be any better for Valentina...

Julie:

Thanks so very much for this great, fab recap. I always so enjoy them.

Yay, Alma for putting the smackdown on Moronica. It's about time someone did. I just wish she had socked her again! Alma threw a little anvil at Moronica too about Royer betraying people. Just as he did Alma and Pato and I'm sure it's lying in wait for Moronica, I can't wait!

Poor Chucho. This is bad with his stomach, but I look at it this way, at least now he can't put off going to the doc anymore. Now he has no choice. I bet it's a bleeding ulcer. Nothing to mess with.

I was really surprised by Pato tonight. I loved the way she talked to Val. Pato has come a ways but still needs help in finding and keeping a job and the klepto problem. I like the time she spends with Chatita.

I can't stand Moronica, but I too like what she is doing to Royer. He is all kinds of dumb I have to say. He should have just asked Domi if a package had come back. I like how Moronica put the necklace on him, too funny.

I don't like Discua being back. I want Xochi and Ferny to stay together, but I wish that Xochi wouldn't gaff off Ferny as she is doing. I want her to fight for her man!

Julie, thanks for the wonderful recap. You had some classic lines, no doubt about it. I scared Mr. Sharkbait when I guffawed at your crack about Vale's party being worse than the one Mad Marta threw for her. And raspberry jam, lol!

I sure liked our two marshmallows, Alma and Xochi, getting spines and sticking up for themselves. Alma just needs a little more practice slapping Moronica.

Mads, ITA about the cute Paty/Vale scene. The adult actress is good with kids, or maybe it's just that the child actress is so amazing. Juarever, I still liked it.

Rogue deserves Moronica. Now I would like to see Moronica get what she deserves!

Nice Recap Julie.
I think Royer is in over his head. Alma took care of herself with Moronica very handily. But Moronica has got the villain role locked up!

Madelaine, "gaff off" is a new term to me. But it seems that Xochi is doing the opposite of fighting for her love. Xochi and Discua will be a welcome relief to Chucho's agony.

Thank you, Julie for a job well done, both the abridged and longer versions.
Xochy needs to grow up. She is the one who wanted to rush the wedding when there was a chance that Discua may reappear, so,now she should deal with it like a woman. The silent treatment with Ferny was stupid. Now more than ever their lines of communication need to be wide open.
I enjoyed the slap that Alma gave Virus. She should have added a left and right hook too.
Poor Chucho, I am sure that his tocayo will come to his aid.
Panfilo confuses me, he compliments Susana but gets jealous over Chatita and Saturnino, what gives?

Julie, thanks for the wonderful recap. My favorite comment was the "coughing up raspberry jam". Sure looked that way. They must have used the seedless. LoL Chatita's cooking sure looked better than mine last night.

"Vale is probably trying to decide whether or not today's birthday party was worse than the one Mad Marta gave her."

Amen to that Julie. And I loved your short paragraph about the positive that happened last night. Yessss! You could have ended the recap right there.

I HATED LAST NIGHT'S EPISODE.

The endless (not funny! not funny!) gurgling sounds of Chucho's stomach, the endless scenes of him writhing, at the birthday party, in the car, at the booking desk, in the cell, more in the cell, more in the cell with blood on his hand and mouth, more, more more blood and stupid gurgling sounds. We've complained about "filler" before but this was absolutely the worst "filler" ever. EVER!

But you did a great job on the recap. Yep, Alma's slap was pretty lame. She did a better job on Pato some time past.

Pato and Valentina primping scenes were cute though. And Elias is seeming more and more attractive. And Chucho less so with his endless self-sacrifice which is beginning to seem stupid rather than enthralling and ennobling.

Yikes, I'm in a foul mood this morning. Well, I blame last night's episode. All I ask for tonight is that Chucho NOT be in a coma. Hmmm...or maybe he should be. At least NO MORE GURGLING STOMACH, PLEASE!

Been binge watching Dark Shadows and they do the same thing: insert characters that just make one spitting mad.

Great recap but this stuff isn't funny anymore. Not worried about Moronica because there is a picture of her in Rog's house with a lot of money.

Valentina is a really good actress.

Julie you did wonders with this frustrating episode last night. It had it's moments, like about 2 minutes worth, that were not making me want to throttle the characters or the writers.

Not sure where the comedy in this TN went, unless in their benign stupidity the writers think those stupid stomach noises were supposed to be funny ( right on Judy!!). And I sort of got it when we kept getting the close up of the hand, then the writhing body, then the hand, and repeat. All nicely topped off with dealing with Alma's mind-numbing screaming/crying/juarever it is she does. Cats left the room...

The whole Discua wanting Ferny back and Xochi acting like a two year old with him...PLEASE! Enough!

Now for my enjoyable two-three minutes...that moment with Paticakes and Val. So sweet and doing the curly pig tails for Val who likes the new 'Do. Great chemistry between the two actors and it was a nice moment for that poor little one.

Yippee...we get surgery moments tonight. Wonder what inane sounds they will throw into the scenes. Just no more Alma crying....please.

Fishknits:

Gaff off is to ignore or blow someone off. It's an old Navy term. She is fighting for her man, but I wish she wouldn't give Ferny the silent treatment. They do need to talk about Discua. I am glad that Xochi went directly to Discua and talked to her.

I can't stand Xochi. She's a 12 year old, well maybe not even. What man would want to be with her, let alone two. Colunga needs to go back to those period tn's where he doesn't have to say much, has sword fights, and just looks very sexy with his long locks, facial hair and tight black costumes. His acting in this, especially last night's sick (and I mean sick) scene was really bad. Val and Rogue .. the best actors, for sure, in this "comedy."

Lorena

Dang noisy episode last night. I hope someone gave little Valentina extra ice cream as all that loud fussin' must have left her throat raw. Jesus' stomach? Sounds like that moment when Drano burns through a nasty clog. Alma screaming? Hey, we're talking an actress with a pretty limited range, right?

I'm not convinced - yet - that Veronica, while no prize on any account, is a worse mother than Jessica Coch's Gala in Refugio. Recall she wouldn't let her daughter touch her and that godawful business with trying to force the kid to eat cold, leftover liver.

Xochitl is turning into a dolor in the culo. That nag night before last about squeezing toothpaste from the bottom of the tube and wearing weird buttoned up jammies to bed is not where a young bride ought to be.

Great recap Julie!

Ditto! ITA! Everything you guys have said so far about this episode I thought last night while watching it. WAY too much Jesus writhing in pain and coughing up blood/jam. Is it bad that I wasn't sympathetic? All I kept thinking was, this is what you get for going so long without going to see a doctor for your chronic pain. He even passed up the opportunity for the company doctor to come examine him in his office. It doesn't get much easier than that!

And I wanted to hit Xochi. I thought I must have surely missed some scene where Fern did something to tick her off, because why else would he be giving him the cold shoulder and being an a** to him? But, nope. Apparently, this is how Xochi thinks you convince a man that he chose the right woman. Huh?

Best scenes were Pati with Vale, and seeing Pati, Vale, and Elias all curled up in bed together.

Judy, yeah, I wasn't feeling a lot of love for most of these people last night. You know things have gone wrong when your favorite scene is of three people sleeping.

Daisy, I really liked Valentina's banana-curls! And with the surgery, I can just imagine hearing a boioioioioiong sound. Hahahaha, not. Cartoon sound effects and medical crises do not mix.

Vivi, I'll ditto everything YOU said. I mean, if your stomach feels lousy and you KNOW someone poisoned you at least once, wouldn't you at least want someone to check your bloodwork?? And yeah, Xochi's chosen a very odd way to compete with Discua.

I added a bucket-related alternate subtitle, and a bad bucket pun to the "next time." I meant to do that last night, but forgot.

I'm only mentioning it in case you already read the recap and then see the bucket stuff and wonder if you're having memory problems. ;-)

Julie: Great recap. Thanks.

Kudo’s to Elias for taking Vale and reminding Vero that she is her father. Also, for hanging up on Vero.

I think that a lot of the action and expressions would look better if they weren’t slo-moed.

I think that Alma overreacted about Jesus’ arrest. It’s not as if he was going to spend any great amount of time there. It’s bad, yes; be upset, yes. Be almost hysterical, no. By-the-way, best looking TN jail I’ve ever seen.

I don’t think Rogue is really on board with the down with Alma thing.

Loved the scene with Pato and Vale, the scene was adorable, as was Vale pushing her daddy out of the way so she could look at her self in the mirror, but I was a little concerned about the surface beauty influence Pato might have on Vale. (Did Pato spray hair spray on her?)

Xochi is going to lose Fern acting the way she is. However, I totally understand why she’s doing it. Her newly found self-confidence is very fragile.

The situation with Jesus’ health has become serious, so it’s almost as if they add the stomach noises to remind us this is a comedy. It’s not as if, from what I can tell, anyone is actually responding to his stomach noises. His clutching his stomach constantly is enough of a clue that something is wrong.

Alma screaming? I don’t know. I think I’d be a little more than upset if I found the love of my life unconscious, possibly dead with blood coming out of his mouth.

Speaking of the blood, wouldn’t he have choked on it, lying the way he was?

Mike: “That nag night before last about squeezing toothpaste from the bottom of the tube and wearing weird buttoned up jammies to bed is not where a young bride ought to be.”—so true.

Vivi: loved the trio curled up in bed, too. I think Pato is going to end up a part of that family.

I don't think Rogue really wants revenge on Alma, either. And yes, what an immaculate jail cell. If you have to be unconscious on the floor of a cell, that's the place to do it.

Chucho was lying on his side, so between that and the coughing/spitting up it makes sense to me that it would run out of his mouth. If he'd been on his back, though, I'm sure he would have choked because there would have been nowhere for that stuff to go.

Maybe the writers will actually let Chucho die, as a PSA for the dangers of ignoring serious medical problems. Then his long-lost twin, an easygoing old-fashioned sailor/fencing master, could show up.

Thanks, Julie. I enjoyed your recap so much more than the episode. The fun to tiresome ratio of the show itself was too low last night.

I thought Alma was over the top, too. Unless she thinks that because Chucho was already on probation, he'll get into bigger trouble.

Is it too much to hope that maybe Vero will realize she enjoys a child-free carefree life in which she can slut around and sleep late with abandon, and she won't make Val go back to Rogue's?

Julia, I like your plan for Chucho, but I'm not getting my hopes up. :-(

Julia: I like your idea about Vero. I do think that she'll give up/lose custody of Vale in the end. I'm still thinking she'll get inolved with Nick Donovan.

There were some angles where it looked like Jesus was lying a little more on his back than his side, and the way the blood ran off his face onto the floor in one of the shots gave me the impression he was lying in a dangerous position.

I think he hacked up the cherry syrup while he was still kind of trying to sit up/turned to the side, and then rolled onto his back as he passed out.

Are the hideous gurgles even realistic? Would that be a symptom of a serious problem like a bleeding ulcer, and not just of hunger or gas bubbles?

I didn't think the gurgles were realistic at all. I thought they were very cartoony. My guts have made all kinds of crazy noises, but not like that.

This whole thing has gotten rather grotesque as of late so I just keep reminding myself it is a "comedy" and will be skipping all hospital scenes. Looks like I won't be watching much for the next couple episodes. I better record so I can fast forward! :)

Jarifa

Blanca Soto and her square-mouth, all-teeth-baring screams .... pshhh! And that feeble slap to Veronica's face ... ugh! Once again, her lack of acting skills shines through.

Mike, cold leftover liver? Ick. That really is heinous.

Xochi was a bit annoying but I cut her some slack because she has come into this with near-zero people skills. Maybe even negative zero considering her mom. However I'm sure I'll be ready to strangle her within a day or so.

I FF through all that stomach crap. Also through Chucho and Alma's love scenes. Also through the screaming. Gee, no wonder the hour flew by.
