PEAM, Tuesday 10/1/13 (#146): The Honey-nooners

Where were we? Oh right, Mad Marta, cleverly disguised in a forehead-braid to pass as her impetuous sister, visits Chucho at Avon. He is momentarily startled, but then accepts her as Marcia. (Someone with a more suspicious nature might question whether the real Marcia would wear her forehead-braid so crooked, but Chucho is a trusting soul.) She tells him Marta's doing better lately, but she still feels terribly guilty about what happened. Chucho says tell her to forget about it, because luckily nothing bad happened. But that's not enough! Fake-Marcia says that Marta needs his forgiveness. Chucho says, in that case, tell her I forgive her.

Fake-Marcia then presses her luck, saying she'd like to see Valentina again. Chucho says, "I told you I'd let you know." Well, she also wanted to meet Alma. He says she's pregnant at home. Fake-Marcia gets a weird gleam in her eye. Why doesn't he give her their address, and she'll visit them at home? Then she realizes she's overdoing it, backpedals, and gives Chucho her phone number so he can call her instead.

The real Marcia, cleverly disguised in a hospital gown to pass as her crazy sister, accidentally calls the doctor "Doctor" instead of his first name. After their session, which we don't get to see, she asks herself why it didn't occur to her before that Marta could go bananas without her medication.

As Fake-Marcia leaves the office, we hear her telling Chucho that she'd love to have dinner with him and Alma. (It's not clear if he invited her in between scenes, or if she's just hoping.) She introduces herself to Susana, Jessica, Marisela, and Ricardo, who don't seem to think she's any saner than her sister.

Paty is still amazed that Rogue said he loves her. (Sebastian scoffs.) Alma reminds Paty that Rogue is a professional liar, and not to make any hasty decisions.

Ricardo wants to talk to Marisela privately and it's almost time for lunch, but before they can leave, Susana tells Marisela that Chatita took Pánfilo to have his eyes examined. (If Chatita forgets the way to the doctor's office, they'll both be in big trouble!)

Fernando is preparing a surprise for Xochi - so what else is new. Chucho thanks Fernando for donating blood to save his life. "I owe you one," Chucho says, and Fernando reminds him of the time Chucho kept him from jumping off the roof. But Chucho needs an additional favor: help Chucho deal with Rogelio.

Paty is wondering if she really heard Rogue say he loves her. Maybe it was a dream or hallucination. Rogelio records a frenzied declaration of love on his phone and sends it to her. She, Remegio, and the other guard go ga-ga over it.

The doctor says Pánfilo will lose his right eye if they don't do something right away. (Mari and Ric arrive.) He will need costly surgery. Mari says Alma will surely lend them the money. Pánfilo whines: he doesn't want to miss work. Too bad - he's to report to the surgeon at 7 in the morning.

Fernando goes to talk to Rogelio about Chucho, but Rogue wants to talk about Vero's baby. The timing couldn't be worse: he's trying to prove to Paty that he's changed. And he's too angry to talk about Chucho.

Cínthia asks Vero if she didn't get knocked up on purpose. Vero insists that it was an accident, but Cínthia says the person she needs to convince is not her, but Rogelio. Vero realizes that this baby could keep her in kinky overpriced designer shoes for many, many years.

It's time for lunch. Ric suggests tacos, but Mari makes a face and they end up at the Pollo Loco (as she tells Jess later). What did he want to tell her privately? He totally, totally forgives her. They kiss over a tasty-looking chicken drumstick.

Aida prepares to eat lunch with Chucho in his office. Chucho says, what, you thought one of these salads was for you? Nope, they're both for me. Go eat lunch with Julio - that's an order. He takes both salads home to have lunch with Alma, who was just about to read a book to her belly ("I'll read loudly so you can hear me.") She's glad to see Chucho, but she's also weepy and she misses work.

Julio and Aida are dining outdoors. They have frozen slushy fruity drinks - my favorite. Aida asks if he's still hurting over Xochi. Julio says no - he's over her. He's met someone else. He's been getting to know this new woman and he really likes her. Who is she, Aida asks. "It's you," Julio replies nervously. They sip their drinks self-consciously. He runs out of slush and the straw makes a slurping noise. Life's too short to be afraid, so they kiss. Woooo! She says she hasn't kissed a man since high school - I guess that's when she was married. And he never kissed Xochi like that. But why are they talking about the people in their past? Aida says, "We can be together here and now."

In the same spirit, Rogelio rushes into the lobby and plants a big kiss on Paty. She really seems to be getting into it, but then she shoves him away and slugs him. He laughs: he knows she liked the kiss, and that deep down she still loves him. He tells their audience - Fernando and the two security guys - that it didn't hurt at all and anyway, he's a masochist.

Alma is not used to lazing about. She's worrying about Avon and the employees and all the things she can't take care of while she's stuck in bed. She feels like she's being treated like a child. But she's also afraid of losing the baby. Chucho says she'll have to trust him to take care of things around the office.

Chucho tells Alma about the visit from "Marcia." Alma thinks she sounds okay and says to invite her for dinner even though Alma won't be able to join them at the table. Chucho is about to question this when the doorbell rings and we go to the front door with Minerva, so we don't hear the rest of the conversation.

At the door, it's Chatita with Pánfilo. Chatita tells Minerva that she and Pánfilo are "friends with possibilities." Hmm.

Back at Avon, Paty is very distracted. Jessica gives her a colorful card that plays music. It's an invitation to her Celia Cruz-themed wedding. (Does she really describes Cardenas as her little deodorant roll-on ball? That's... original.)

Fernando tells Rogelio he'll forgive him for framing Discua, but on just one condition: he has to give up the illegal business. He can live on just his very generous Avon salary. It will prove to Paty that he's worthy of her love, too. Rogue protests; Paty doesn't even have to know about the money laundering. Fernando says "I guess your change isn't for real, then. I don't forgive you!" Rogue relents. He'll give up his life of crime! Fernando forgives him.

Alma says of course Pánfilo can have the money for laser surgery to save his eye.

After lunch...

Someone is waiting for Ricardo when he comes back from lunch. This man wants Ric to sign a receipt for a package of Important Papers. Is it a notice of intent to seize all of his belongings? A subpoena? The paper-serving guy doesn't know.

Cantú doesn't know why Rogue wants to meet with Nick Donovan tonight, but he sets an appointment for 9 pm. Chucho gets tired of waiting for Rogue to agree to see him, and bursts into Rogue's office. "You're acting like a spoiled brat and we have work to do," Chucho announces. They argue loudly, and people outside can hear them. Rogue keeps calling Chucho "secretario." Chucho reminds him that the PRESIDENT of Avon made him SUBDIRECTOR. Rogue gets angry. "If you don't like it, why don't you quit?" Chucho asks.

There's a call from Mr. Wilson, the über-president of Avon International in NY. He's sending Tracey Rodriguez to Monterrey tomorrow to supervise them! Rogue is flustered. Chucho wants to help. Rogue says he'll handle everything.

Evening...

Alma tells Chucho that Tracey is very strict. Surely Rogue will screw everything up because he doesn't know a thing about the business. Paty shows up and tells them about Rogelio's kiss. And the doorbell rings again... heeeeere's Fake Marcia!

Rogue and Cantú go to Nick Donovan's place, which is filled with smoke as usual. (Rogue quips that it's like a quinceañera in there. Lotta smokers at those sweet-15 parties?) Rogue declines Nick's offer a drink and blurts: "I'm getting out of the business." Nick's face is as unreadable as a comic-book character's, but Cantú sits down heavily in shock.

Next time:
Mad Martha is on the loose, and Valentina cries. Are these two things related, or is it an editing trick?

Thanks for the early posting, Julie.I certainly look forward to you recap. You got lots of lovely kisses from minor romances but Veronica and the Marta/ Marcia threads threaten dark days ahead. All looks demonic for our little heroine, Valentina. OMG, lets pray for phone calls or Skype parenting frim Elias.

Julie:

I too will wait for your always most excellent recap! Lots of love to counterbalance the ugh here tonight. I too hope we get to see Elias Skyping with little Val or a phone call, I do miss him!

Sorry for the wait. I'm finishing it up now.

Done. Thanks for your patience.

Julie:

Wonderful! So snarky and funny. I loved all the kisses this epi. They were very sweet. Except for Rouge. He is really trying even willing to give up his illegal bidness, but he still needs to atone for all that, change his attitude towards Chucho and grow up already!, before Pato should accept him.

Marta is really pushing it. I think the gleam in her eye was when she heard Alma is preggers. In her BSC brain she's probably thinking they are having a new bebe, they won't possibly have time for Val. Just a guess. I feel sorry for Marcia who is taking those meds she really shouldn't take. I wonder when the Doc in the manicomo will notice she isn't Marta. I just hope that preview isn't Marta showing up at Val's.

Looks like Alma's hormones are kicking in. Her's aren't quite so bad as Rebe's in UFCS, remember those?

I wonder what those papers were that Rico Suave got. I can't wait to find out.

It doesn't look like Nick Donovan is too pleased about Rogue wanting to leave the bidness. And Moronica now wants to relieve Rogue of huge amounts of money. Hmmmmm points to ponder.

Oh, about Cardy and Jessie. I think she thinks of him as her bald little guy. It is too cute.

Julie, it was a fantastic recap as usual! Thanks!

I loved the ides of Jessica's Celia Cruz themed wedding.

I also loved Marisela and Ricardo talking over the chicken drumstick. Marisela later says they went to El Pollo Loco. I was jealous: they closed down my Pollo Loco. :(

Anyway, on we move to more non-comedic events in this comedy! another hospital event with Panfilo.
Yuck!

Jarifa

Only caught the last five minutes including previews.

WILL YOU PLEASE STOP TRAUMATIZING THAT LITTLE GIRL!!!!!

When she gets older, she's going to realize that everything bad started happening when Jesus entered her life.

Nanette

Great recap Julie. Didn't watch most of this last night because of a late work call. I caught the very end and Marta showing up. Argh!! Really??

I'm with Nanette - enough with the plots that make poor Val go off the deep end. I want to meet the sadistic writers who keep thinking this is in anyway funny or interesting.

So, I guess Avon doesn't have health benefits for their employees? But I guess it helps having a generous, rich boss--don't think that would fly with my boss to pick up my personal expenses. Just sayin'.

Speaking of bosses--how much do Rog and Alma pull down as salaries? She's living in a penthouse and Fern says Rog could live well enough on his 'generous" salary. Thought they were only regional heads. I want their job!

And please, dear heavens, don't make this Tracey fall for Chucho.

Maybe Ric's papers have something to do with Discua's church. She put him in charge - you'd think there would be some paperwork involved. Not sure why that would be a plot point, though.

Quitting the business is going to make Rogue's life much more complicated. Vero will be annoyed by the reduced income - she might even have to start wearing normal footwear. And Nick will want assurances that Rogue won't throw him under the bus.

Ooh! Maybe Vero will try to team up with Nick.

Rogue would actually be better off in the long run if he turned himself in and cooperated with the police. Fernando and Paty would be impressed, Vero wouldn't be able to blackmail him with that any more, and he'd probably get a fairly light sentence in exchange for his cooperation.

On the other hand, he'd have to name names - and that could get him murdered. Which is a pretty powerful disincentive. He'll also be stuck with Vero in his life no matter what he does, thanks to the baby.

I'm hoping against hope that Tracey will be a nice, sane, reasonable woman who, if she falls in love with anyone, will fall in love with someone who's actually available and interested! It would be a refreshing change!

Julie: thanks for the great recap.

Thought something had happened to Alma and/or the baby after seeing the night before’s previews of Alma crying. Glad to see it was only pregnancy hormones.

Daisy: Please don't jinx it. ANOTHER woman falling for Jesus. I get it. He's handsome, charming, but, please no more!!!!!

I didn't assume that Tracey is a woman. Did Alma indicate that Tracey is a she?

My favorite moments? The adorable kisses, of course. And then Rogelio leaping into Fernando's arms in happiness. He is so good at physical comedy.

I also noted the gleam in Marta's eye at the mention of Alma's being preggers. I feared that it was dangerous for Alma, not just for Val. This whole baby thing is what throws her over the edge. Could she have designs on the baby?

No more sequestrations, please. Not Val & not Alma.

Güerra

Thanks, Julie! I love your title.

I liked the scene of Julio and Aida timidly flirting over their drinks like nervous teens in the soda shoppe in some old-fashioned poodle skirt scenario. They are too cute.

Ridiculous that Panfilo would need to ask for the money for his healthcare. Since he's employed full-time, shouldn't he have the social security medical insurance? Especially with his health issues!

I really enjoy both Rogue's and Cantu's physical comedy. I also thought the way Cantu and Chucho played off each other in Rogue's office was very funny, especially the way Cantu skittered away after that Look from Chucho.

It looked like Chucho found it a little odd that "Marcia", who theoretically knows none of these people, is so determined to be friendly with them. Unfortunately, he doesn't have a great track record in following these niggling suspicions to their logical conclusions.

Hi Julie...too cranky to watch this one at the moment but I always enjoy your recaps. Don't like where this is going at the moment. Please, no more babies and little people in danger! Too much like the real world.

Guerra: I was worried too that Marta might want Alma's baby. Also, re: Tracey--she didn't say s/he was a woman, but the name is more common for a woman, at least in the US. But, maybe that will be a "joke" on the viewers--we're expecting a woman and Tracey turns out to be a man. So, unless he's gay, no crush on Jesus. That will be a relief.

Alma said that Tracey is "estricta," which implies that Tracey is female and that Alma knows her at least by reputation.

Guera, I thought the gleam in Marcia's eye was about the baby too. Maybe she would like to start from scratch with a new kid. However, she did specifically say she wanted to see Alma, even before Chucho mentioned the pregnancy. (I think she said she came to the office to ask Alma for Chucho's phone number, or something like that - not knowing that he was working at Avon again.)

Chucho really didn't seem keen on giving "Marcia" a lot of detailed information, and he didn't do anything to imply or encourage any intention of an ongoing friendship. (That's quite a change for him.) I also thought he did his best to get her out of his office as soon as he could.

I don't know if he was suspicious as such, but he didn't enjoy having her there. He seemed surprised when Alma said she could come over for dinner.

Clarification: "estricta" as opposed to "estricto," which would refer to a man.

"Vero realizes that this baby could keep her in kinky overpriced designer shoes for many, many years." TOOOOO FUNNY...!

It would be pretty funny if Rogue really turned honest and ended up either in jail with no income, or working the sort of job he is actually qualified for with a low income, and the best child support he could offer Vero was the rental of Chucho's old apartment and enough for the very basics of food etc. and clothes from the flea market. What do you think? Vero in Crocs and mom jeans?

Sadly, the financial/blackmail angle is the most "positive" thing Vero has said about her pregnancy so far.

Rogelio has made it clear that the baby is in inconvenience, but he also told Fernando, "of course I care about the baby." That's more warmth than Vero has shown towards it yet.

Julia - I was just now thinking that it would be better if Vero died of childbirth complications. That way her baby can fantasize about a wonderful Mommy instead of having to grow up with a woman whose parenting skills are deteriorating fast.

Vero in Crocs and mom jeans is funny, but I think her child would be better off with bandicoots.

Rogue would actually make a much better parent than Vero. He may not be the most attentive, but he would probably hire a competent nanny, and at the very least I don't think he would use his own child as a weapon. He seems pretty appalled that Vero does that to Val, and he can't stand Val! I think he might even develop a great deal of affection for his child; it's Vero he doesn't like. Does she have green eyes?

OT: Does anyone watch the novelas on Azteca?

Thanks so much Julie!
