La Tempestad – 10/31/13 On Halloween, A Tale of Curses Fallen
Labels: tempestad
I got a little carried away and inspired by Ben Jonson, a true genius, so I decided to try a recap in (sloppy) iambic pentameter.
Cheers,
EJ
Will be taking the recap to work with me to savor.
Laughed in great appreciation at "We sure hope that they won’t need a Copter For Mercedes is still talking to Dam". Very clever.
"hoping the best As mother to daughter lays her heart bare" was great but my hands down favorite was "Now lightning fast Moves the rabid slavering wolf—the kook—
Threatens the bed-bound Bea. She is aghast!"
My favorite scene was Fully delightedly eyeing the cribs for his already beloved nieto. Larger than life, dominating and stealing every scene he is in, Cesar Evora at his loveable best.
In terms of the story...Did I miss that Mercedes had confided in Becky she was Marina's mother? To be honest, I can't blame Marina for taking the news badly. Mercedes should have started with the backstory before breaking the news rather than just blurting it out. Marina feels betrayed and rightfully so. And of course, Bea is her REAL mother so I can't fault her for saying it. My heart went out to Mercedes but again, the approach was ill conceived and while Marina was cold, she will calm down so hopefully a better conversation will ensue.
Very worried for Zully. She should take her pictures and leave now. After seeing Hernan manhandle Ester, she should know full well what he is capable of doing if he finds out what she has done.
And Marina telling Hernan that Bea is recovering? No surprise - we knew she would. Still, that didn't stop me from cringing as she was spilling the secret.
Hernan is sadistic and sick. I am very afraid for Bea if she does not recover her ability to speak and quickly.
Where is Jose??
William Levy is wonderful in the scenes with his "son". That is an absolutely beautiful baby and has been good as gold in all of his scenes.
Nereo spiffed up in a suit made me ill. You can put lipstick on a pig but well, it's still a pig.
Ernesto is still causing havoc with his phone calls. Gotta give him credit for keeping the heat on many, many miles away.
EJ, thank you again!
Happy Friday all.
Diana
Wonderful recap! Wonderous, marvelous, superb! So inspired!
I too wish Mercy had started with her back story before just blurting out she is Marina's Mama. Marina's reaction was much like Mags', the anger, the hurt. I think once Marina calms down and really thinks about it, she'll come around.
It will be interesting tonight when Mags comes to RLayDee. Won't Marina be more shocked then! She doesn't even know she has a twin sister, but Mags does. Hmmm.....
I too fear for Zully. She wasn't very careful. I hope she has enough to get out of there.
I was yelling SHUTUPMARINA when she spilled the beans to Herny that Bea could move her lips. Then poor Bea had to endure that horrid knitting needle. I was really hoping that Marina would walk right in. He is in need of every anvil there is.
DamFinePapa is so very good with bebe Michel. Agree with you Diana, about how good that little bebe is with WL. He is great with kids.
Can't wait for tonight to see Mags meet DamFine!
Thanks again Ms Elna June for this truly inspired recap!
Mercedes is terrible at telling this secret. You would think that she's now done it enough times to perfect it, but nope. She gets worse each time. She left out the vital fact that Marina has a twin sister to both Dam and Marina.
This is what she should have said: Marina, when I was young I was duped, imprisoned, and abused by a bad man-- Ernesto Contreras, the man you confronted as a rapist in your hotel. He was a dangerous mob boss, and when I escaped him, he vowed revenge. He got that revenge when he stole one of my TWIN daughters from my arms and sold her. I was so scared and so desperate about the safety of my other daughter that I gave her to her father and his wife so that they could raise her safely away from Ernesto. That baby was you.
Vivi...You will never be in a telenovela because you are too intelligent and logical. remember...there is a reason we need beanies. These characters are never strong in the common sense department.
I have a hard time watching Herny around BeaStill. He's horrible and abusive to Pester and Ursullied, but at least they can run away from him. Bea is trapped and helpless. I cannot stand abusive guys who terrorize women. Find someone your own size, Asshat, like DamBigandStrong who couldl clean your clock. Whoops, I forgot! you are only brave when it comes to scaring and pushing women around.
Vivi - ITA with your scenario regarding Mercedes's reveal to Marina. It would have given Marina the opportunity to hear the story behind the act.
I really can't stand watching Hernan taunt Bea. He needs to go, but I have a feeling he will be one of the last men standing.
I was delighted that you started off with the Third Charm, such a spooky, eerie poem was perfect for our All Hallows Eve. But then to read on and discover you had written your own masterpiece, for us, in iambic pentameter...well I am in heaven. Really.
Now I must admit I haven't actually seen this episode. Yet. But I do feel I have seen it all in my mind's eye because your descriptions are amazingly vivid.
Isn't it interesting how the crazy plots of this telenovela lend themselves to such a Jacobean mood? It's amazing really.
I nearly fell off my chair laughing at:
She braves the danger, “What of it? “says she,
But how to get the thing under my suit?
There are so many more lines I could, and should, quote, but they are too many.
I am in awe, not only were you inspired, but you pulled it off! A recap in iambic pentameter! Is this a Caray Caray first? Well done!!
It is one thing to conceive of a clever idea at 10pm in the evening. It is quite another thing (and that is wherein lies the genius that is and is of Elna June) to bring it to fruition, to s u s t a i n it and deliver it in la madrugada.
I join Diana, Vivi and Sylvia in their awe of what you have given us on All Souls Day.
El Capitan looked surprised and did start,
At the name of Ernesto Contreras.
“That’s a man said to be deep in black arts,
Ester may not be his best purchase”.
“Him she married, her memory was lost
He may have got the worse of the bargain”.
Continuing her tale Mercedes glossed
Over this. But her face it did harden”.
“Thank God that man is now rotting in hell!”
But, cut! The shot now shows Him in a room.
Alive, changed, blacked hair and brows he dwells
In a right nice apartment, not a tomb.
“Call me Frank!” he reminds shaved Nareo.
So sharp and funny and delightful to the ear yet amazingly faithful to the story. WOW.
Oh and you comment from a few days back regarding the number of TN episodes. Most of the best I've seen have been short and extending often destroys TNs that could have been good or great (though LFMB was a good TN the extension made me not that fond of it). I would have to get real data but I think many viewers lose interest (lower ratings) as well.
Diana - I don't think Mercy told Becky; Bea did.
The tormenting of Bea must stop and I'm so sad most of the patio was right and Marina told him. While Marina has not been the brightest, it makes you think the writers don't have a good grasp on sexual harassment. Most women who have dealt with the likes of Herny would not maintain any type of close relationship with someone who has no boundaries. I'm so with Susuanlynn on this and wanting this to end. Basta.
Vivi - loved your logical reveal and laughed at your spot on observation that Mercedes is actually getting worse at this.
I once knew a poet named McAmiter,
with a d**k of enormous diameter.
But it wasn't his size that gave me a surprise,
'twas his rhythm, Iambic Pentameter.
Thank you Karen. I got confused (ha, a daily occurrence) and wrongly inferred from Becky consoling and encouraging Mercedes that Mercedes herself had told Becky.
Diana
And yes, I agree that Mercy's approach was not strategic, but perhaps it was more realistic this way. Anyone as overwhelmed with remorse and guilt would likely do something just as stupid. She believed she deserved rejection, expected it and set herself up. Let's hope Dam & Becky can prevail and that Bea starts talking soon.
Thank you all for your kind words. Sometimes it is fun to try a semi-disciplined style of writing. Lord knows I am not You know how it is, the worse the show gets the more the recappers get annoyed, oops, creative.
In our case the story is just fine, within TN limits, but the chopping has offended many of us.
I didn't have to join you all yesterday for the comments and delightful haiku you created, but you inspired me and put me in a poetic frame of mind when I sat down to write the recap.
Emarie: Wasn't it funny that they gave Mercedes' tale telling so much time? Daniela Romo and Levy are friends in real life and their chemistry is right there in their scenes together.
Hi, Diana: So glad you enjoyed the recap. I couldn't get all the missing epis online, but in one that I saw there was a darling scene of Jose confronting Oso about his interest in Becky. Oso says they are friends, great friends, but that is all. Jose is so relieved that the two of them then hatch up a scheme to play a trick on Rebecca. Jose will dump her while Oso fake-courts her. It was mean but very funny. I so miss the Jose/Becky story.
EJ
I am so glad you enjoyed the recap. I love to make other recappers smile. ITA with you and Vivi; Mercy makes her case very poorly. the way Romo plays it, as awkward, ashamed and heartbroken is pretty moving.I know Mercedes/Romo can go OTT with mother-histrionics but last night I really felt for her.
Vivi: From now on, I want YOU to tell Mercedes' story! It really is sad and compelling and filled with mistakes—just like all of our stories. Whenever Mercedes is about to TRY to spill her guts, I want to hear an audio, "What Vivi said!"
Susanlynn: Thank you so much for your praise. You are such a generous soul. Blush. I have been writing poetry for many years but I almost never use the traditional disciplined forms. Just plum lazy, I guess. I would be honored to be thought of as a poet, at all, in any forum that will take me. Big smile and hugs to you on El Dia de los Muertos.
Hi, Marta in New York: So nice to see you. So glad you were entertained by my Hallowe'en recap offering. I could not agree more. Hernan and his cement water feature may be the only things standing in the ultimos capitulos. We know he will go, but not 'till the end.
EJ
I bow to your greatness.
I want to be you when I grow up.
Thank you!!!
As always my mentor is generous with her praise. Thank you, dear friend. You have inspired so many of us to be recappers and to enjoy the fun of both blogging and providing a modest service.
Hee, hee. The pentameter was sort of iambic—you know what I mean. I could not get a good meter going in this short of a time.
Isn't that section of witches curses from Masque for Queens just wonderful? Jonson was a genius. I would have liked to see a masque, in their real heyday. I think to my eyes it would have seemed an odd combo of music, dance, allegory and parable. Plus of course all of the inside-court-jokes that the original audience understood but we will never decipher.
Novela Maven: Praise from the brilliant is nectar and sweet balm to my ego. Thank you, Thank you.
My friend, you know the only reason I try these recapping experiments is because I have a serious case of ADD. When I bore myself with what I am writing on the page I am forced to take drastic measures.Hee hee hee. Sending chortles and hugs and warm thoughts your way.
JudyB: Dear one. I blush at the thought of real genius, but I aspire to amuse and entertain. From you—a very fine writer yourself—I greatly appreciate these comments. Sending fond love to Ohio.Isn't basketball season starting soon?
Karen: I was predicting that you might prefer shorter novelas! I really hate extensions as they are almost always filled with, uh, filler. Thanks so much for your generous praise. I hope is very well with you.
Sylvia: Your limerick has me howling. Mr. McAmiter's services must be in great demand.
Thanks LXV, for your kind words. It is good to know that in the interest of form I did not lose the story. Love your great read on Mercedes' awkwardness:
"Anyone as overwhelmed with remorse and guilt would likely do something just as stupid. She believed she deserved rejection, expected it and set herself up." Wow. ITA.
EJ
Your haiku helped inspire me! I am so glad you are joining us here on Caray Caray. Thank you for your kind words and contributions to our lovely community— they are much appreciated.
You just made me smile. I have great interest in certain disciplines and studies. Last week I told a woman, a real expert in her field—no dabbler she—that I wanted to be her when I grew up. Thanks for the grin, and your company.
EJ
This recap is even more daring than that dress Zully was wearing.
Carlos
I'm not a fan of poetry but you have changed my mind.
Thank you!
BTW- Vivi- you are so right. Your version made sense.
I was floored. That was a masterpiece of a recap. I did not think it could be done. What a great recap to put you in the Halloween and Fall spirit.
I agree with all that commented about Mercy's way of confessing the truth to Marina. I couldn't believe how quickly she said it. I guess it goes with the flow of the UniScissors. Chop, chop, and to the point! On the other hand, had Mercy told Marina the WHOLE story, she might have been more understanding with Mercy. But that goes against TN rules. We have to remember that we need drama and confusion for these TN's to work.
I too yelled at the screen, ShutUpMarina, when she told Herny that Bea moved her lips. Noooooo!!! I cringed when he had that needle and was taunting Bea. Now, my fear is that Bea might die before she can warn Marina about dirty Herny and his bag of tricks.
I really hope Zully finds something to incriminate Herny, without getting hurt herself. I think I hate Herny as much as I hated Bruno (David Zepeda) on Sortilegio. Speaking of David Zepeda, I find it difficult to watch him as the protagonist, because he plays such a good villain.
Anyhoo, I can't get enough of DamHotDaddy. He is so adorable with that bebe. I can only imagine how he is with his real children. I also think that makes him DamSexy!!
Hasta Luego Amigos y Gracias Elna June!
Great stuff. And it made for a great recap.
Vivi--I'm in total agreement. Mercy is a smart enough woman to have approached her story for Marina differently and made it more palatable for a very vulnerable Marina. Especially after the negative comments Marina had made about not wanting to know anything about her biological mother who abandoned her.
I also agree with Susanlynn and Diana that you'd never get hired by a production that is into 130 episode telenovelas. Much stupidity and illogic are mandatory to stretch good stories out that far.
You are such a great recapper and kind friend. I was feeling audacious last night, it is true. Sometimes you've just got to put it all out there.
I am glad you enjoyed the recap offering.
If Zully doesn't get better at her job, she may be buried in that lovely daring dress. What a beautiful woman! What a bad spy!
Tablet jefa:
Thank you so much. There is a whole Damworld of poetry out there and some of the best (IMHO) is in Spanish. My most favorite of all is Fererico Garcia Lorca, but you must read his work aloud to truly appreciate it. Also, Pablo Neruda was not a nice man but he was a poetic genius.
vita:
I bow to your haiku and it's sentiments.
EJ
I am LOL. The last time I tried an AB rhyme in iambic pentameter was probably just exactly the 11th grade!
When I use the meter as I write today, it is almost always in blank verse. Assonance an consonance are much more important in that form and it is perfect for the lazy poet.
Thanks for your comment!
EJ
Zully's ark is redundant as we had the same ark with JazLu when she was trying to free her sister. She too worked for Robles and tried to get evidence from Nereo.
William Levy… le sigh… glorious perfection. Every time he is on screen I die from happy and resurrect myself enough to talk about his fantastic charisma embodied in the demigod body. Judge me if you must.
I will admit to entertaining the thought once or twice or more of doing a recap in poetic verse. But by God I never had the guts or wherewithal to actually DO it! Or even try it. I am still amazed after joyfully re-reading this recap. What fun.
You are too kind! I truly appreciate the compliment. I just saw the Great Performances version of HenryIV Part 1. I was once again awed by Shakespeare's mastery of language and how much meaning can be conveyed by fine words in the mouths of gifted actors.
If you haven't seen the "Hollow Crown" series, I highly recommend it. Henry4 part 1 has the best performance of Falstaff I have ever seen. Punto.
EJ
I agree with you about reading Fererico Garcia Lorca poetry aloud to truly appreciate it. Do you recommend any others?
Wow. Just wow. The intro segment from Ben Johnson really set the stage for your masterpiece. Loved your clever rhymes and your ability to maintain your narrative within the confines of the poetic meter. Shakespeare would be proud! I was both impressed and grateful for such an imaginative recap.
And OMG that baby looked like he absolutely adores Marina.
