Lo Que La Vida Me Robó Lunes 12/16/13 Capitulo 19

Chapter 19: The Pursuit of Love and Fortune

In Review

Corporal Alvarez found the calling card of the deceased steward and decided to impersonate him upon arrival at Almonte Manor. Refugio told his friend he was mad: The dead man was described as a widower with no children so surely he would not be able to manage this. Corporal Alvarez told him the deception is meant to be only long enough to enable him to liberate Lady Monserrat. They proceeded to bury the unfortunate Mr Olivares, as the smoke from a makeshift cremation would attract unwanted attention.

Current Happenings:

Lady Monserrat's Chamber: Rosario brought her breakfast and enquired why she was not outdoors enjoying the beautiful sunshine. Her Ladyship thanked her, but said she preferred to stay indoors. Rosario departed silently, but with an expression of much concern. She encountered Lord Alejandro without, who enquired of his wife. She told him that she appears pale, and as though she had not slept all the night before. He thanked her and noticed that she stared searchingly at him. She caught herself, then retired to the kitchen, leaving him with a pensive expression.

The Road: The murderers reported to their master that their task was done; he allowed them to go their way.

Valverde Manor: Lady Josefina descended the stairs to greet Master Dimwit, who professed much impatience at the end of their encounter. He clutched her face in what the unfortunate young woman must have mistaken for a caress. She made a most forward comment regarding the pleasure of the taste of his lips, provoking a more chaste kiss than she realized in her inexperience. It was most pitiable that she told him that she avoided brushing her teeth to not lose the taste of his lips from the day before. Perhaps she requires spectacles because she did not notice his most unenthusiastic expression. She wanted so much to cry out that they are betrothed; he cautioned her of common gossip and spoke of his parents' sense of propriety. She wished to assure herself of his love and he proposed in the correct words but with the wrong intention. She accepted with more enthusiasm than any lady of her condition should show, then closed her eyes and prepared for a kiss which – as we must note – was even less enthusiastic than the earlier ones.

Almonte Manor, Dining Room: Maid Maria was most overjoyed at breakfasting in the hall. Rosario watched her with much suspicion as she waxed in a what she regarded as appropriate expression of her glee at living with Lord Alejandro. However, His Lordship carefully stated that she lives not with him but in his home. Rosario continued to serve and observe until Maid Maria presumed to dismiss her in a most shrewish manner. Rosario exited and His Lordship sternly told Maid Maria not to treat his staff in this manner. He reminded her that they are the same people as those whom he employs, then rose from the table and exited the dining room. She followed him out to the parlor, where Father Anselmo awaited. His Lordship offered him coffee, which Maid Maria repaired to the kitchen to fetch. The two gentlemen then sat. Father Anselmo did not hesitate to note the impropriety of Maid Maria sitting at breakfast with His Lordship in the place that rightfully belonged to Lady Monserrat. His Lordship then explained to the good priest that on the evening past he prevented Her Ladyship from fleeing in the night and she did not wish to eat with him. He did not refrain from telling him the content of their argument. Father Anselmo declared that they are both stubborn. As they are married, they are to find agreement on how they will live with each other. Lord Alejandro explained that his lady wife wished not to share anything with him. The good priest reminded him that his vows before God were to love, honor, and care for her. She was suffering now, but Lord Alejandro intoned that irrespective of this he would not permit her to leave his side. Not until death do they part.

Before the Church in Agua Azul: Lady Josefina met with Countess Graceless and Lady Carlota as they approached. Countess Gracess requested that her sister-in-law meet them inside as she had a private word for Lady Josefina. After Lady Carlota complied, Lady Josefina gushingly informed the Countess that she was so impatient to speak of her love for Master Dimwit. Countess Graceless listened behind a most patronizing smile. When Lady Josefina paused to take a breath, the Countess asked whether she had mirrors in her residence. Despite her various social deficiencies, Lady Josefina understood well her meaning. The Countess made her opinion clear that Lady Josefina lacked the necessary qualification to be worthy of her son. Her Ladyship's disappointment was apparent.

Almonte Manor, Parlour: Maid Maria returned to inform His Lordship that a man awaited without who identified himself as the new steward. He inquired about Juventino and Maria reminded him that he was not on the estate at the moment. He asked that the new steward be admitted. Father Anselmo rose and took his leave, telling His Lordship he would be going to the kitchen to see Rosario.

Maria admitted the errant sailors. Corporal Alvarez identified himself as Mr Olivares and shook hands with Lord Alejandro, whose expression showed a keen curiosity.

Before the Church in Agua Azul: As Lady Josefina began to weep, Countess Graceless showed herself worthy of the name by reminding her that she was of so little worth in comparison to Master Dimwit that she should seek another sort of man [Indeed, one worthy of the name]. She continued down the most improper path of reminding Lady Josefina of her age and that she should not pursue this ridiculous path and leave Master Dimwit alone. She clearly chose not to hear Lady Josefina state what she should not have had to, that she may not be beautiful but that she had much else to offer. She finished her assault by telling her to leave her son to be found by a beauty and that she should meanwhile seek out a bit of cosmetics. [My word, perhaps Lady Graceless has been reading too much Henry James. Most unfortunate.]

Almonte Manor, Parlour: Lord Alejandro asked whether Sir Victor Hernandez had sent him; Corporal Alvarez replied in the affirmative. He quickly indicated that the other man is his assistant, but not to worry of his remuneration; he would pay him. Refugio quickly introduced himself as Renato Garcia and shook His Lordship's hand. He then produced the envelope of documents containing references and letters of recommendation. His Lordship was satisfied as to their quality, assured the false Mr Olivares that the work will be easy for a man of his experience, and he could enquire anything of Maria (whose late father previously held the position) or of Juventino, her uncle. For the moment Maid Maria was to show him to the steward's cottage, which would be cleaned for him. He may take his meals there or in the manor house's kitchen, as he preferred. He enquired of their luggage and the false Mr Olivares explained that there was an accident shortly after they had left Agua Azul and they lost everything, arriving with only the documents and the clothes on their backs. They had walked most of the way. His Lordship insisted that they rest and they will speak later. Maid Maria then escorted them out.

Elsewhere: Master Dimwit and his questionable friend Master Adolfo laughed at his easy deception of Lady Josefina as to their marriage prospects and Adolfo's deceptions of his parents as regards their business prospects. Master Adolfo was most amused at the effort required on his friend's part to carry out this deception. In a most vulgar manner they imagined how Master Dimwit would have the life of a man of fortune.

Almonte Kitchen: Father Anselmo assured Rosario that Lord Alejandro does indeed love Lady Monserrat. He is certain that their conflict originated with Her Ladyship's mother, Countess Graceless. Rosario immediately then enquired about Maid Maria, plainly telling the good priest that she did not find her attitude pleasing. She considered her to be of bad character. Father Anselmo did not precisely answer this, but finally asked her why she simply did not identify herself as His Lordship's mother. She replied that she did not want to create a scandal. He did not believe this would be so, even explaining that the revelation would allow her to take her proper place in the household [That would most likely not please Maria, which would be to our liking]. However, she was not of a mind to do this yet.

Steward's House: Maid Maria showed the new arrivals inside, indicating that all the record books were organized at the desk. She commented on their experience and the false Mr Olivares told her she may know more than he does. She informed them that a servant named Rosario would be there to wait upon them, then took an apple and departed with a most inviting look. The false Mr Garcia did not fail to notice this, watching her walk away and commenting on her appearance. The two commented on her female attributes in a manner not to be heard by a lady or even to be said by a gentleman. They concealed the pistol and talked about the rooms, then how they must take care to not arouse suspicion. The only man who had met the real Mr Olivares was in Agua Azul. José Luis then said that they would not be there long; as soon as he speaks to Lady Monserrat they will leave.

Outside: The good priest and His Lordship talked of the community they are building and that it would require their attention later that day. Father Anselmo once again encouraged His Lordship to speak with Lady Monserrat, “just to humor an old man.” [We do not like what this might presage.] He agreed and went to fetch a horse so that the good priest may ride to the village. Father Anselmo congratulated himself discreetly.

Lady Monserrat's Chamber: She stared out of the window when His Lordship knocked for entry. She displayed indifference when His Lordship's entered with a request to speak with her of their difficulties. He sat opposite her and explained that he did accept responsibility for some, but not all of their troubles. They spoke of Sir Sebastian's breaking of the engagement and that nobody had actually been aware of Lady Monserrat's relation with Corporal Alvarez. Lord Alejandro then felt that his suit came perhaps too late although he knew when he first saw her that she was to be the woman of his heart.

Mendoza Manor: Countess Graceless and Lady Carlota arrived to find Master Dimwit in the parlour. Countess Graceless assured her son privately that she had put Lady Josefina in her place and he need not worry of being disturbed by her again. He embraced his mother, expressing his gratitude with an expression of some relief.

Valverde Manor: Lady Josefina wept over her encounter with Countess Graceless. She asked Master Adolfo if she was indeed as ugly as she had been told.  He responded in a pretended brotherly manner to assure her she was not, but that Master Dimwit does care for her. He finally suggested that they elope and marry in secret, which would force Countess Graceless to accept the marriage. She was surprised, but did not object to this suggestion.

Lady Monserrat's Chamber: Lord Alejandro explained his discovery of the late unlamented Bruno Gamboa's financial caddishness including the acceptance of a forged deed given him by Master Dimwit. Lady Monserrat was incredulous at the presumption displayed by her feckless brother. He continued to explain that he had been willing to resolve the Mendoza financial problems in exchange for the opportunity to address her. Her mother had given him the opportunity. She asked, however, who first thought of this. He admitted that he had made the offer. She was not pleased, continuing to accuse him of having purchased her. He told her that from the moment he saw her he knew he had to win her. At her repetition of her hatred, he asked her forgiveness once again.

Steward's Cottage: Having bathed and shaved, José Luis donned some clean clothing – and his new identity with them [The straw hat, however, does appear to be a size too small]. He told Refugio he had found the clothes in the closet, assuming they had belonged to his predecessor. Speculating on whether Maid Maria would approve, Refugio repaired to said closet to see if any would be appropriate for himself. He wondered whether there was any special relation between Maria and His Lordship, which José Luis considered a possibility. After all, one with such lands and income may buy and sell anything, including a highborn wife [or a lowborn mistress].

Lady Monserrat's Chamber: His Lordship explained that she was not to know of the arrangement because he knew she would not marry him purely for his fortune. He wanted her to love him as he loved her; that was all he sought. He would have treated the money as a loan at the last had she not wished to marry him. Furthermore, Master Dimwit knew all of this. He had told him that aside from Sir Sebastian, there had been no other men in her life. She was not pleased at hearing this. He asked why she had accepted him if she loved another. Was it that her other suitor didn't have an adequate fortune to satisfy her family? She explained that she was told various lies, then accusing him of being aware of it because she saw him with the woman who was part of that deception. She had seen him in public with Miss Esmeralda Ramos and he cannot deny it. He did not, because he was acquainted with Miss Ramos. Further, she accused him of taking part in the false witness report regarding the murder accusation that ended with Corporal Alvarez in the stockade. Also that he knew that Bruno Gamboa had cheated him and therefore killed him or ordered another to do so. All to place blame on Corporal Alvarez to get him out of his way. Since she is unaware that the reports of Corporal Alvarez' death are much mistaken, she then accused Lord Alejandro of his murder. He was incredulous at this accusation, that he would do something so low in pursuit of a woman. He would never do such a thing. However, he most importunately told her that now that they are married he would not let her go. He had never deceived her, and it was his great misfortune that he loved her as he did. He left her alone in her room to weep yet again.

Outside: The perverse Juventino chewed on a straw as Maria told him that the new steward has arrived. He did not quite believe her as could be anticipated, yet he did not betray the reason. She reminded him that His Lordship intended to hire a replacement for her father. He carefully said that he didn't expect this to happen so soon. He became more alert when she mentioned that the new steward had an assistant. As she explained the story about the accident on the highway, His Lordship came down the stairs behind her. He told Juventino he would be introducing him to the new steward. They would be introduced at dinner. Further, Juventino was to accompany him to the constabulary. He agreed and walked away. Maid Maria then flirtatiously asked His Lordship if they may go riding. At first he appeared pleased at the notion, but when she made a disparaging comment about Lady Monserrat, he hardened his resolve. He told her that Lady Monserrat is his wife and Maria would do best to remember that. She lowered her head submissively and to his misfortune he believed this display, asking her if she would still like to go riding. She agreed then seized his hand to lead him to the stables.... to the dismay of Lady Monserrat, who arrived on the balcony just in time to see this, possibly without hearing what had been said.

Steward's Cottage: José Luis and Refugio talked briefly about Lady Monserrat needing to know of his presence before seeing him when Juventino entered without knocking or other announcement. He recognized their clothing and José Luis told him it was as he was told, that all their possessions were stolen. He promised he would pay for them, but Juventino told him this was of small matter. However, what was not be of so small a matter was José Luis' demand that Juventino knock before entering from this point on. Juventino issued the challenge by placing his booted foot on the coffee table. Refugio moved closer and wordlessly indicated his distaste for this action... not to mention the odor of stale sweat. Juventino backed away toward the door, telling them that His Lordship wished them to speak over dinner that evening. He excused himself and departed. Both José Luis and Refugio knew in that moment that they were in the presence of profound malevolence.

Lady Monserrat's Chamber: Rosario entered, asking Her Ladyship why she was not out and about, as it was a beautiful day. Lady Monserrat indicated she preferred to remain in her chamber. She finally asked Rosario whether she was satisfied with her situation. She replied in the affirmative, saying that His Lordship treated her well. Lady Monserrat enquired as to his whereabouts. She was unsure. However, Lady Monserrat said she knew he was with Maria, saying that she would have been the perfect wife for him and he should have married her instead.

Posted without avances because my set died this afternoon.

I can tell you the preview.

Montse becomes jealous, she chooses to become the lady of the house, she sees Jose Luis and faints.

That will be interesting.

I will be researching a new TV set in the next couple of days and starting to prep my pad for it. Unfortunately, it will involve major furniture changes. I am not looking forward to this.

Thanks for a thorough recap despite your tv issues. It clarified some of the conversations that I'd only partially understood between the Lord and reluctant Lady of the manor.

What a beautiful recap, Urban! The fan is absolutely beautiful, too!!

You never disappoint. Thank you so much. :))

Thank you for keeping me posted, and with such style and flair, no less! I am traveling and my hotel doesn't have Looneyvision.

So our main couple actually talked about their issues and misunderstandings?! Yay! That's progress, right? Though if I were Montse, I would be wondering if his "love" for me was purely superficial, and if he would still be interested if my looks took a turn for the worse.

Urban:

Thanks so much for this fan-tastic recap, and the fan is just gorgeous. I'm sorry about your TV set and all the changes that will incur.

I'm glad that Monse and Ale cleared the air, but it needs to be cleared a bit more between them. At least now Monse knows the length and breadth that Graceless and Dimwit went to for money.

Juvie knows that JL is not the new capataz, so I wonder what he is going to do to get rid of JL and Refugio.

I am glad that Ale caught Maria in her shrewish mode. I'm glad he got all over her about the way she talked to Rosario. Good for him.

Ale knows how Maria feels about him, he ought to know not to be going off with her. She seems to think any little excursion means that he feels something for her he doesn't.

One little correction Adolfo is not Josephina's brother, but her friend. Adolfo is Nadia's brother.

I couldn't stand Graceless this evening to humiliate Josie that way. It was uncalled for. And her remark about the makeup. Too bad Josie didn't have some snark. She should have come back at Graceless about her hair and outfits.

Urban, beautiful fan and magnificent recap. Thank you for entertaining us so wonderfully in spite of your TV problems.

Ay ay ay, Ale and Monse got a teensy bit closer to an understanding but they are still far away. Sigh. As Mads says, at least Monse knows her mom and bro are not to be trusted.

Poor Fina. She is playing right into Dimwit's hands. But so is mommy dearest so that's kind of fun.

Mads, when the murdering bad guy reported back to Juvie didn't he say that he did not actually ask Antonio what his last name was? So I'm thinking there could be a wee bit of doubt in Juvie's mind that JL might actually be the new capataz. But whatever, he can't "out" JL and Refugio without indicting himself. Should be fun. I loved how JL and Refugio ganged up on Juvie.

I liked the preview where Rosario urges Monse to take act like the lady of the house and take control.

Thanks UA!

thanks, UA. I fell asleep during this episode. I have Ben running around preparing for the holidays.

In Amor Real, the housekeeper was a nasty , obsessed piece of work, just like Maria. also the same is the leading lady pining for her onetruelove.

I like the actress playing Osario and the subtle way she is developing her rôle.Moshe has Maria's number.

Sorry about your TV. We have replaced a refrigerator, mower, and storage shed in the last few months. Now, we are researching coffeemakers. We usually checkout consumer reports and Good Housekeeping. We own two Sony TVs and ave been happy with them.

Well, we were up at 4,45 to babysit, but now it is snowing and there are school delays, so.....back to bed for awhile. Yawn

Ben???? Who is Ben and why do I have him running around ? That was supposed to be "been" I must proofread. p.s. I wish that I did in fact have a Ben to run around and help me. Yawnnn

Lovely UA. Styled and splendid. "She caught herself, then retired to the kitchen, leaving him with a pensive expression", "José Luis donned some clean clothing – and his new identity with them" and "After all, one with such lands and income may buy and sell anything, including a highborn wife [or a lowborn mistress]" were but a few of my favorites among a rich, bountiful offering of savory sayings.

The deception was a clever ploy and the implications are endless. Sylvia, I was cheering that JL and Refugio put Juvie in his place so quickly! And of course the little weasal backed right down. All bluster and bluff.

Maria is so transparant, shame on Ale for not recognizing what her game plan is. At least he scolded her for the way she treated Rosario (ITA Madelaine), but he seems oblivious to who Maria really is.

I agree that Graceless was beyond cruel. How could she treat Josie that way?? Her anvil can't come soon enough for me.

Look like Monse is in high fashion gear tonight (a little payback for Ale's attention to Maria)? And a reunion she never saw coming.

Hope you sort out your TV issues UA. Best of luck and thank you for a marvelous recap.

Diana

UA, thank you for the very fine royalty themed recap and the beautiful fan. Good luck on your new tv acquisition.

Josefina and Dimitrio: another case of a supposedly "ugly" woman being used. Seems to be too common of a theme in telenovelas to be entertaining and the overt sexism is annoying. I'd love to see an "ugly" man get used, be taken advantage of as frequently. Anyway, Dimitrio should look in a mirror because he and Josefina share the same "unibrow." They'd make a perfect couple!

Ale needs to keep Maria in her place. I'd love to see him send her and Juvie packing asap. I am glad Ale told Montse all about her mother and brother's involvement in the marriage scheme. Another common character? : the spoiled lazy manipulative son. There just was one in CI and now I see one here.

All in all a satisfying episode.

Jarifa

Ooh! Love that fan, Urban. And great recap.

I was happy to see Ale take the Padre's advice and talk to Monse. They didn't clear everything up, but they managed to cover a lot of ground. I'm not happy to see that JL will show up just as Monse is making an effort to move closer to Ale, just like last time. He has terrible timing!

I really hope that Fina eventually gets to turn the tables on Dim and Graceless, and gets to laugh in their faces.

Just made that correction. When I went to bed last night I realized that something wasn't quite right about this.

It will take a while yet for the latest misunderstanding to be cleared -- particularly since Jose Luis has arrived, which we know will create more misunderstanding.

Most of my fans, BTW, come from the dollar stores. Not Deal$ or Dollar General, but from Asian family-operated ones. We have them all over my neighborhood.

I know that Josefina's parents are dead and I'm wondering whether either of them was toxic like Dr Sloper of Henry James' Washington Square, which led to the 1949 film The Heiress. She displays some of the same social awkwardness as Catherine.

Dear Urban,

Thanks for beautiful and engrossing recap! It's 12 degrees this morning in Boston where I live and I was stuck by the door of the subway/trolley (we call it the "T") for most of the way, but I had your recap to keep me warm.

I loved your description of the Dim and Josefina kiss--the detail about her not brushing the teeth was the best. I also liked your aside re Padre's encouragement to come out of her secret mother closet--[That would most likely not please Maria, which would be to our liking].

I'm glad, too, that Montse and Ale had a bit of air clearing, and that he at least told her again how much he loved her. I am enjoying this TN, but I am desperate for some more romance between these two!

The forced marriage (and the similarity of the La Que/Lo Que structure to my native English-speaking ears) always puts me in mind of La Que No Podia Amar, which is still one of my favorites. I felt the writers did a good job of always showing how the two leads were falling for each other, even as she kept claiming love for another. It was among the best handled most satisfying romances I've seen in TNS. I wish we'd get some more romance here. But we've got 180 episodes, so I'm hoping!

Thanks again for a fabulous recap!

I was also thinking that had this series been done in modern times in 2003 that Jorge Salinas would have been the perfect leading man for it. Not that I didn't love Amor Real, but Jorge has never done a novela de epoca and I have difficulty picturing him in one.

He probably could have rocked those Victorian clothes, though.

I was scratching my head over the "childhood friend" thing of Alejandro and Maria, but the two actors are only a year apart in age. SR is 13 years older than AB, though.

I'm also wondering what crisis will happen later. The two previous versions took place during periods of war and we don't have one now.

Thanks UA. Great recap!! Loved the style--so Henry James!! Sorry about your TV, but there are some great Christmas sales out there!

I am loving Rosario! That woman will be Monse champions, and Maria's worst nightmare. You go girl!!

Boy, Graceless really turned on her inner Cruela deVil last night to Josie. It will be so fun when we get the make over and Graceless has to eat her words. Maybe she should heed her own words and pay closer attention to her own reflection. Too many bad hair days and awful outfits to be pointing fingers woman!

Daisynjay

Thanks for eating my comment blogger!

Diana, great observation about Juvie: "of course the little weasal backed right down. All bluster and bluff." He truly is like the playground bully who is really a coward.

Gracie is also a bully, going for the jugular on one (Fina) who is ill-equipped to defend herself. That scene was painful.

The scenes with Dimwit and Fina should be painful, but those two have such great chemistry and play so well off each other I can't help but enjoy their scenes. So far.

Susanlynn, Ben and Moshe? What's up with your Ipad?

Urban: You write with a lot of grace and wit. I really enjoyed your recap.

So, Montsy finds out in the blink of an eye that Juan Luis is not dead and that Alejandro told her the truth and is not a liar. It was too much for her to process at once. And, the beat just keeps on coming.

Pasofino, unfortunately, Alejandro told Montse that Jose Luis is dead, so she will probably think he is a liar all over again. Unless Ale tells her that it was her own mother who gave him the news.

Sylvia: That is true, but, what I had in mind was that Alejandro told her that he had nothing to do with Juan Luis' death and that he would not stoop so low to win a woman - that is the truthful part.

He is telling the truth - because he believes that Juan Luis is dead, and, now to further complicate the situation, he does not even know what Juan Luis looks like.

What remains to be revealed is the depth of Montsy's character. That is, what is her version of the truth going to be? Of course, she has twisted everything that Alejandro has said far out of proportion to any logical reality, so, there is no telling how she will interpret the fact that Juan Luis is still alive. (I haven't seen prior versions of this novella.)

Yes, you are absolutely right about that part. As you say, hopefully she will see the positive side more than the negative side. But she does like to interpret reality to suit her negative view of Alejandro.

Well, the man did buy her, and force himself on her in bed, so...

We may see his finer qualities, but, as he has admitted himself, he has been his worst self with her.

Well yes, there is THAT bottom line a suppose, hee!

What complicates matters here is that Countess Graceless didn't even know the truth about JL's "death." Nobody who said he was dead was lying because they don't know the truth.

There should be a forensic investigation of the car crash but I wonder if there will be.

If Victor comes to the hacienda he will out JL because he is the only person who would know he isn't Olivares.

Ah UA, nobody writes a recap quite like you. Thanks for that morning treat (and a bitter cold morning it is too). I haven't seen this yet but will look forward to watching it later, now that you have whetted my appetite...and that most elegantly.

So sorry about your TV. All the home repairs we are having done have resulted in more repairs needed! Serious ones! So I hope your search for a new TV turns out better than our various home-owning adventures.

But....grateful for a warm roof over my head during these chilly days. And for your recap, amiga mia.

Nice work, Urban. This PP is so great I have to copy the whole thing:

UA wrote:

'Valverde Manor: Lady Josefina descended the stairs to greet Master Dimwit, who professed much impatience at the end of their encounter. He clutched her face in what the unfortunate young woman must have mistaken for a caress.'

EJ: OMG, I thought I would LOL at how Osvaldo is playing the Dim One. His is such an ugly character that it is easy to despise him—then the actor slips in a sly little move like that and moves us into the realm of farce.

UA wrote:

'She made a most forward comment regarding the pleasure of the taste of his lips, provoking a more chaste kiss than she realized in her inexperience. It was most pitiable that she told him that she avoided brushing her teeth to not lose the taste of his lips from the day before. Perhaps she requires spectacles because she did not notice his most unenthusiastic expression.'

EJ says:

Here it seems that Veronica Jaspeado is meeting Osvaldo straight on with the "she avoided brushing her teeth" breathless exclamation. What great fun these two are together.

I have to laugh at the idea of Josefina being 'fea'. Wasn't Veronica she once a runner-up for Miss Mexico in the 1990's? I also think that her unibrow is fake. Won't it be fun to see her transform herself? No spoiler here; you just know that this is coming.

Thanks again, Urban Anthropologist, for the recap. Good luck with the television search. I find such things very stressful.

Elna June

Julia:

I found myself very hopeful (against my better judgment) when Alejandro insisted that he and Montserrat talk. I cannot imagine how this previously well-told story can maintain dramatic tension over 180 episodes.

Oh, well, the actors are a real treat.

Safe travels.

EJ

SomJosie will get a makeover or is this just speculation? And yeah why dont they launch an investigation on JL? Even Grissom would already notice that the car was empty at the time of the explosion if compared to the Dimwit detectivos.

i cant help but laugh at Josie and Dimwit scenes ,now if Dimmy trully falls for her that would be great but i highly doubt it.

We haven't seen what the cops have been up to, so we don't know if they've already realized that the car was empty. In any case, the cops work for Pedro the Mayor, and he wants JL and Refugio to become his minions, so he wouldn't inform the navy and the world that the two are alive. In fact, it works in his favor to have everyone think they're dead. He'll probably start up a secret search for them himself.

Demitrios:

This is pure speculation on my part. I do not use 'spoilers'.

It seems logical to play out the Dimitrios/Josefina story with a turn around in power dynamics. Plus, as you say, the two actors are great together. The writers have a lot of time to fill with 180 episodes.

Also, Jardinera has just notified us of a possible schedule change for our little show. Pls see her post on the 'Mentir' line.

EJ

Urban - Lovely recap, gorgeous fan.

If Master Dimwit is such hot stuff, why aren’t the ladies beating down Gracie’s door to get to him? Esme only put up with him Dim for the money. Also, I don't see any age difference between Josefina and Dim, not that it matters.

At this point, Montse can do no wrong in my eyes. Ale is still expecting her to fall in love with him based on his words alone. Hombre, hauling an escapee over your shoulder and then saying "te amo" doesn't cut it. How about showing her you care by teaching your wife to ride a horse or taking her out or something? Thank goodness for Ale that Rosario is on his team.

Yay, JL gets a new shirt and loses the sweat-stain look! Ale and Montse so clearly have the chemistry and belong together, that I see no need to reduce the appeal of the second fiddle. I too love the way JL and Refugio have Juventino's number.

I'm thinking that Juventino believes his thug team killed the wrong man and that JL is the real capataz. His thugs had no evidence to prove they killed the right man and in Juventino's view there's no reason for someone to pretend to be capataz.

I somehow doubt that Pedro would spend the dinero needed to investigate the car crash. If anyone does that it would be the Navy.

I think there could be a drug smuggling ring in this tale's future. Pedro has some illegal source of income.

Thank you for the elegant recap, UA. I never realized you were such a fangirl.

Susanlynn, you have me waiting anxiously for the adventures of Ben, Osario and Moshe to unfold -- especially Moshe. [When he shows up, I may have to invite Rabbi Jacob back for color commentary.]

María believes that Alejandro and Montserrat have not 'consummated' the marriage ('entre ustedes no hay nada…nunca ha habido nada') so in her (deluded) mind, it should be relatively easy for him to walk away. So is that ugly, forced coupling we didn't quite see one week ago -- and that nosy María is unaware of -- going to be an important dramatic peg on which the legitimacy of the marriage rests?

Yeah Pedro has some illegal source of income,i shudder for what negocios would he need JL and Refugio if they would still be in AquaZul

Sylvia...My Ipad and I were both sleepy at 5 am this morning when I left my fractured comment.. ,
" Moshe" was meant to be "she., I believe that Ipad wants me to take the blame because I did not proofread. Anyhoo, I went back to bed and slept like a baby in my new, cozy micro fleece sheets, It is still snowing here..another snow day. I have been using the time off from babysitting to continue getting the place ready for Christmas. I cannot find Ben anywhere? I think that he is hiding from me somewhere.

I am trying to remember if the mother told Manuel that Matilde's onetruelove was dead. the timeline is a little different because Antonio , the onetruelove, did not meet his friend until he was sent away to an awful prison. The leads had time to get to know each other and forgive each other and ultimately fall in love and make crazy monkey love all over the hacienda....in the bed, outdoors on the picnic tablecloth, in the supply house, etc.(SHout out to my BFF Cynderella...prepositions....YAY.) By the time the two prison mates escaped, found the dead overseer along the road, and showed up to take his place at the hacienda, I think that the leads had already gotten together...in the Biblical sense. My memory of the timeline of events is a little hazy..unlike Vivi's amazing memory for details. I know that the housekeeper and bad hacienda worker (Juvirh in Amor real had nothing to do with her attempted escape. I think Matilde tried to escape on her own. Like Ale, Manuel discovered her missing and rounded up his men to find her. Rosario was living in the servantsm quarters and helped Matilde by telling Manuel that she had just come to visit her.

Novela Maven:

Welcome back, Rabbi Jacob! I so enjoy your viewpoint.

I am giggling already.

EJ

In AR Alfonso didn't get to the hacienda until Mathilde and Manuel had made up and things were alright between them.

Mathilde had met Rosario during her attempted escape.

Speculation, not spoiler: The wedding night will result in pregnancy.

One more thing: Alejandro and Monserrat are both blondes while Jose Luis is dark. Unless both Monserrat and her mother were bottle blondes prior to the age of 17, the baby should be blonde with blue or green eyes. Of course, a DNA test will have the last word, but Monserrat had at least two periods before the wedding to Alejandro.

Urban, I love your style.
I especially liked the part about Refugio and Jl sying things that are not for a lady's ears or for a gentlemen's mouth (or something similar); our two fugitives are no gentlemen and Maria a lady? HAHA

I think I'm supposed to be disgusted by Dim tricking Finita, but I can't help but enjoy their scenes. The bit about not brushing the teeth was perfectly done, I was laughing out loud the whole time.

I'm glad Ale finally listened to teh padre and started a talk with Montse, but she's been so hurt she really can'thelp but turn on him every chance she gets - as a result I think Ale came out of the fight worse than before, as a possible murderer in her eyes.

If you love something, you never set it free - this has to be Ale's motto.

If Montse turns out pregnant, it can only be Ale's baby, because 2 months had passed between the last time she saw JL and her wedding.

UA: thanks so much for the great recap. I’m planning on a new TV next year. I’m excited about it, maybe because I’m now watching a 20”.

I’m glad Ale put Maria in her place at the table, but Ale is totally clueless re: Maria. He thinks if he tells her he’s not interested that’s it. He’s a bit of a dim bulb himself, sometimes.

I’m expecting Alpo to do a switch on Dim and get him married to Fina for real.

Josefina will have the last laugh.

Nanette

"Alpo"... was that a Freudian slip? Because he is a dog and that is not meant in a complimentary fashion.

Alejandro needs to be more blunt with Maria, but I'm not sure that would even be effective.

Nanette, a real marriage, I like it! That would be a sweet little twist. Not so much for Fina, but I am confident there will be a "turnaround in power dynamics" as EJ predicts.

Alpo was not a slip. I first used it in one of the HPLP lists.

Urban great writing as always! I always enjoy reading your recaps...thanks!

I was surprised that Ale and Monse talked so soon...but I dont think anything really came out of that conversation. She still doesn't believe him but at least they both know the series of events that led to where they are now.

JL and Refugio make a great comedic pair. They are more interesting to watch than JL and Monse. I like how Refugio always tries to talk JL of the next stupid stunt they pull...unfortunately it never works.

If only DimDim can use his brains to actually work instead of using all his energies in pulling a scam. Nonetheless...I like DimDim and Finita.

Thanks for the great recap Urban. I love the style.

Cynderella

Just stopping by to say that this is a wonderful recap, thanks UA. Actually all the r-ecappers are so talented with very different styles. Yours too Cynderella, so irreverent. Thanks to all.

Yola

I am actually surprised that Countess Graceless isn't pushing her dimwit son onto Josefina. She's rich, virtually alone, socially awkward, and doesn't come off as having much upstairs. You'd think she'd want more dinero to get her hands on.

Urban, I truly enjoyed your elegant recap. Always enjoy moving back in time.
Sorry for your TV problems; hope you can resolve them with a minimum of anguish.

Now having seen this, did anyone else find it odd that José Luis immediately addressed Alejandro using the "tu" form? That seemed a little cheeky to me...for a new employee just arriving.

Also, I thought I heard the padre using "nadien" while remonstrating with Alejandro. There are no closed captions in Spanish on the computer version anymore, but I thought, maybe that's just the folksy way of saying "nadie" in that part of Mexico. Because surely the padre is educated, but perhaps tactfully speaking in the way of the local people.

At any rate, I wouldn't even have noticed "nadien" if NovelaMaven hadn't first pointed it out, so thanks "Teach"!

I don't think that Alejandro would make anything of that, as he's probably not yet accustomed to being Usteded.

Which Jose Luis would not do on principle.

It was freezing and snowing in NYC today, so the store visit for a new TV will wait a few days.

UA: it really doesn't make much sense that Gracie isn't pushing Dim towards Fina. Considering, the way Fina is, Gracie wouldn't have problems controlling her. I wonder if it isn't a little bit of an "incestuous" kind of thing-Gracie wants Dim to herself.

Dimitrio told Graciela that Josefina's money was actually her brother's, not hers.

Maybe he isn't so dim after all or if she knew it was hers (if it is) then she would push him into marrying her.

I also agree that she's a bit too close to him.

Anon 6:13: didn't realize that. Thanks for the info.

UA, thanks for the recap, and sorry about your TV.

I was so glad that Ale got angry with ShutUpMaria when she yelled at Rosario. I really can't stand Maria right now. I also liked that when Maria said she was so happy that he invited her to live with him, Ale clarified to Maria that she doesn't live WITH him, but lives in his house (vivir conmigo no, en mi casa).

Finally, someone (the Padre) told Ale that he was being stubborn and too proud. I think that deep down Ale knows that he is acting badly towards Montse, but he was also hurt and betrayed, so he feels like he wants to hurt back too.

Glad to see that Rosario sees right through ShutUpMaria, and let the Padre know how she feels.

Ale and Montse finally have a talk. At least we know they can have a decent conversation. At least the beginning of the conversation was calm.

ShutUpMaria needs to shut it. She has the nerve to tell Ale that he can have his marriage annulled because nothing has happened between him and Montse. That is very personal, and none of her business. She has crossed the line, and I think Ale needs to put her in her place. I can't wait for Ale to find out that his "best friend" wanted to have Montse killed.

Back to work.. .Hasta pronto!

I'm watching this as a re-run on univision and enjoying the recaps. My hearing comprehension and vocabulary are finally getting better and good enough to follow these conversations, but I have to concentrate soooo much still. THank you
