Chapter 10: Presumption and Delusion

In view of how these events are unfolding, I now speak in the voice of Edith Wharton.

In Review

We are reminded that Master Dimwit has lost a significant sum at cards and we witness his shame.  Surely the gods then compensate with another view of the initial kiss between Lady Monserrat and Lord Alejandro, which leaves Lady Monserrat wide-eyed. Unknown to them, Refugio watches from a vantage point at the other side of the garden.


Current Happenings:

Garden: Lord Alejandro* is concerned at the impact this has on her. He explains that he has been fascinated with her from the first moment he saw her near the shore on the occasion of their first encounter. He then attempts to assure her that he is unchanged despite the change in his circumstances. Before Lady Monserrat is able to explain that her feelings are not the same as his, Countess Graceless enters and interrupts by inviting His Lordship to stay for a dessert repast. He declines graciously, Lady Monserrat saying that he has important matters to settle. Countess Graceless then attempts to extract a promise to visit them on the morrow, but he wavers, then accepts, and departs. When he is beyond their hearing, Countess Graceless speaks of his attributes to her daughter. They return inside and she continues her attempt at coercing Lady Monserrat to conquer the heart [and yes, the hormones] of Lord Alejandro. Lady Monserrat, however, is not of a mind to do this. She refuses to be a sacrificial lamb to the family's financial problems. At the last she tells her mother she will do no more of what she demands, states the matter is concluded, and departs for her chamber. Countess Graceless, however, does not appear daunted by this.


Military Stockade: Corporal Alvarez broods in his cell, praying to be shortly reunited with his ladylove while Lady Monserrat wonders whom she can trust, finally deciding that there is no one.

Townhouse in Agua Azul: Lord Alejandro arrives to find Sir Victor awaiting him to discuss business matters. He enquires as to whether they are returning to the estate on the morrow only to have Lord Alejandro shake his head. Sir Victor correctly guesses that this is due to Lady Monserrat.

The Following Day

Almonte Manor: Maid Maria directs another servant as to where to place the flowers, anticipating Lord Alejandro's return.

Townhouse in Agua Azul: Lord Alejandro hands some gold to Sir Victor, asking that he purchase flowers to be sent to her ladyship. Sir Victor comments that this is evidence of his love, but advises against doing anything foolish. They have no time to continue this conversation due to the arrival of the fat man who won all of Dimwit's stake in the previous evening's game. He tells Lord Alejandro that he holds a promissory note for payment and was told to appeal to him for it. Lord Alejandro holds his temper well as he explains that Master Dimwit is not his relation and he has been told lies. “What am I to do, then?” he asks. “I know not; that is your affair,” is the reply. The man departs, saying he will seek out Dimwit's relations. With a most eloquent facial expression and not a word, His Lordship expresses his opinion of his ladylove's hapless brother. [Methinks after this he should worry about the intelligence of his future heirs.]

Military Stockade: Refugio arrives to advise Corporal Alvarez to forget about Lady Monserrat because he saw her on the previous evening with another man. Corporal Alvarez does not wish to believe this. His friend explains that he saw her kissing the other man and was not confused about what he saw.

Mendoza Manor: Clad in a short one-shouldered aquamarine gown, Lady Monserrat opens the door to the fat man, who enquires about Master Dimwit. Upon her telling him that Dimwit had left five minutes previously, the man asks to see Admiral Mendoza. She explains that he is ill and cannot receive visitors at this time. Upon realizing that Lady Monserrat is the sister of the wastrel, he informs her that her brother owes 20,000 pesos [currently about $1,515 US] from the previous evening's gaming. Further, that he was told to collect it from brother-in-law Lord Alejandro, who refused to pay. Lady Monserrat is astonished at this news.

Townhouse in Agua Azul: At that very moment, Master Dimwit has arrived at Lord Alejandro's residence to explain this matter to him. He requests that he lend him the owed money. His Lordship does not hesitate to call him out on his presumption, and his unworthy and cowardly behaviour, especially having dragged his own sister's name into it. Dimwit begins to apologise, but ends his statements with excuses. His Lordship tells him this is not to happen again and.... that he will not pay. He has agreed to help the family, but not cover for his foolishness. He is interested in Lady Monserrat for her goodness and noble nature and will not be taken advantage of. He orders him out, finally telling him that this man threatened to go to his father.


Mendoza Manor: Which is now the subject of Lady Monserrat's conversation with Countess Graceless (whose manner of dress clearly makes her worthy of that name). She does not lose her temper at the news or the reminder that this is a blot on the family escutcheon, but is clearly disturbed by it. She asked whether the Count is aware of this, but Lady Monserrat tells her he is not. However, Lady Monserrat is embarrassed at her brother's presumption. She knows this leaves her at a disadvantage, believing that this will cause His Lordship to withdraw his suit. However, Countess Graceless is not deterred. She is certain that Lord Alejandro is sufficiently fascinated with her daughter that this will be of small matter; after all he has remained in Agua Azul. She is equally presumptuous certain that el Conde will be pleased with the match because Lord Alejandro is a great catch. Lady Monserrat wants no more of this humiliation. Countess Graceless tries to hush her as though she were humoring a child who has just skinned her knees, telling her not to worry. This is, of course, because she has everything under control starting with an apology to Lord Alejandro for Dimwit's actions [good] and another attempt at persuading His Lordship to cover the debt [bad].

Military Stockade: Refugio brings food, but has to leave it because Corporal Alvarez is not hungry. He destroys his appetite further by explaining that he will be taken away from the area shortly. The corporal worries about what they will think of him. He so wants to think she is confused.

Mendoza Manor: The bouquet – a magnificent and presumably expensive array of red roses – is delivered. Lady Monserrat is certain that it was ordered before Lord Alejandro knew of Dimwit's presumption. Countess Graceless is pleased at the flowers and goes on as usual, but Lady Monserrat is apprehensive. She finally informs her mother she does not wish to marry anyone, accusing her of playing with her life. Predictably, this provokes a counter-accusation of playing with the lives of The Family, especially that of the Count. She has promised that Lady Monserrat will receive Lord Alejandro on the morrow. Lady Monserrat is annoyed at her mother's presumption. She does not want to lead the gentleman on. Dimwit then appears, telling his mother he needs to speak with her and this ends this confrontation for the moment. Lady Monserrat lets her brother know she is extremely displeased with his behavior.

Military Stockade: The lieutenant orders Refugio to prepare to move Corporal Alvarez to the facility in Mexico City. This is to be done with absolute discretion. Per orders of Captain Robledos, if there is an escape attempt, he has permission to shoot to kill. Refugio then opens the corporal's cell, cuffs him, and marches him out.

Mendoza Manor: The Count admires the flowers. Lady Monserrat asks him about their finances. He doesn't want to discuss this, telling her not to worry about it. She worries about how they could repay the loan. He is hoping for better return on their crops and that Dimwit will find work. He has been forbidden to work on business matters by his doctors, whom he things are exaggerating his situation. Countess Graceless is in charge now, which is plainly obvious.

Military Van: En route to Mexico City, Refugio drives while the lieutenant rides in the front passenger seat. Corporal Alvarez is in the rear seat alone. However, he appears to have a key to the handcuffs, and he works it carefully. Percussive music sounds through this most disagreeable scene.  The car stops and the other two get out first, letting Alvarez out. He hits the officer, taking his pistol. Corporal Alvarez aims at him, finally with Refugio aiming in the same direction, telling him to kneel. Corporal Alvarez demands the cell phone.  The lieutenant throws it to him, and ugly words are exchanged. The corporal and his friend have no desire to hurt the officer and they head for the vehicle. However, the lieutenant has a smaller pistol in an ankle holster, which he draws and fires, hitting Refugio. He keeps the pistol aimed at Alvarez, whom he orders to surrender, as he is to be turned over to the police in Mexico City. Alvarez – in the first show of courage we see from him – challenges him to shoot. He is an innocent man and will not be imprisoned for crimes he did not commit. He even moves in closer so that the pistol touches his head. The lieutenant appears somewhat confounded by this at first, finally saying that Alvarez is as worthless as his friend. Who promptly shoots him. He falls with pistol in hand and Alvarez kicks it out of his grasp. He helps Refugio to his feet and gets him inside the van. They drive off.

Police Car: Local law enforcement passes the military vehicle and then finds the lieutenant further down the road. They appear unable to do the sum of the situation.

Almonte Manor: Maid Maria waits on the steps, still with her leg in a cast and crutches at hand. Her father tries to get her to go back to work.

Mendoza Manor: Lord Alejandro awaits and Countess Graceless enters, rhapsodizing on how much Lady Monserrat appreciated the beautiful roses. She bades him sit and apologises for Dimwit's behavior, explaining also that the Count is unaware of what has happened. He becomes concerned and she tells him that the man owed the money did come to the house. Lady Monserrat was deeply shamed by this. However, she goes on about how pleased her daughter is with him. He makes certain that none of their previous conversations regarding the arrangement were known to her. She does implore him for the money to pay Dimwit's debt to spare the scandal it would cause. He reluctantly agrees, stating that he is at the edge of his patience with this. She expresses her gratitude, promises that this will not occur again, stating once too frequently that she is embarrassed and ashamed of her son, and before exiting to fetch her merchandise daughter deeply inhales the fragrance of the roses, as though they had been sent to her. He looks as though he is wondering what manner of trap he has fallen into.

Lady Monserrat's Chamber: Countess Graceless enters, telling her daughter that His Lordship will pay her brother's debts. She is to be most amiable toward him. Her Ladyship is annoyed yet again. Countess Graceless asks whether she would prefer that her father know and suffer another heart attack. Of course she would not but is not pleased by another loan.

Military Van: Alvarez stops the van and takes out the first aid kit to help Refugio. He rips open the shirt and pours a liquid over the gunshot wound, which looks like it is near the left clavicle.

Mendoza Manor: Lady Monserrat enters the drawing room to a kiss. Countess Graceless leaves her alone with His Lordship and exits. Lady Monserrat apologises for her brother, but Lord Alejandro says that she is not her brother's keeper; everyone is responsible for his own actions. This doesn't take away her chagrin on her family's behalf. However, the deceptions are the worst. They have an oblique conversation about trust between men and women and possible/hypothetical bad experiences. He finally takes her hand, telling her that he is completely sincere and would like her to be his intended. She appears to accept, but reluctantly.
Military Van: Alvarez manuevers Refugio into a sitting position, but this could be a grave error. Refugio refuses to be taken to a hospital, as they are now fugitives. They exit the car.  Refugio puts on his rosary as though it were a necklace,which surely must be an ill omen.

Mayor Medina's Study: Captain Robledo and the local police relate the finding of the lieutenant's corpse to His Honour [who has none, really] and his theory of the crime. He has an excellent grasp of the matter. After he exits, however, Medina tells his people that the two fugitives are exactly the sort of men they will need for their business matters.

Woods: The two fugitives are afoot, but Refugio is unable to move much more.

Mendoza Manor: Countess Graceless wakes her husband to tell him that Lord Alejandro is about to announce his intentions. She is too excited to notice that her necklace is askew. She directs the gentlemen to the study then requests that Lady Monserrat help her prepare dinner while the gentlemen speak formally. The Count is pleased at this except for the risk that he feels he is taking advantage of His Lordship's generosity. He is happy when assured of the contrary. Outside the building His Lordship declares to Lady Monserrat he is very much in love with her.

The Preview:

Corporal Alvarez is en route to Mendoza Manor at a most awkward moment.

*We know not whether his bastard status is an impediment to his acquisition of his father's title.


Of course, I have not failed to notice that our hero is maturing to resemble a favorite of a past generation.

I wish Ale hadn't caved and paid Dimwit's debt. I hope Ale is smart and makes Dimwit work it off somehow. He shouldn't just give him a pass.

I am so liking Ale and Monse together, they are smokin'! You can clearly see the attraction, but you can feel it too. Sigh! I really liked when Monse was in her room, after that kiss and she touched her lips. I think she is surprised, no matter how much she denies the attraction.

JL and Refugio are in sooo much trouble. I wonder if they will make a clean getaway or one of them gets caught. Seems the cops in Agua Azul are not up to snuff.

Pedro is sooo dirty. He has his fingers in many pies in Agua Azul same as Fully did in RLayDee. I could really hear what he said tonight, his lips and mouth were actually moving ; )

I like your name for Gracie, Lady Graceless, how apropos. That outfit, what was that? And that necklace, oh, don't get me started, my eyes, my eyes are burning! I am crossing my fingers that we get to see her in one tasteful outfit this TN. One can hope.

I don't think that Refugio and JL will get away. Now that there is a death connected to them their gooses are cooked.

Graceless' taste in clothes is clearly not what it should be. That red shawl she made into a skirt is really painful to look at. That "necklace" is too weird for words.

I'm also disappointed that Alejandro caved on the money. However, I would love for him to make Dimwit work it off somehow.
 

A very fine recap, UA. Clear and amusing. Dimwit is such an idiot. I, too, wish Alejandro had left him swinging in the breeze.

Our ambitious Mama is not only graceless, she is completely shameless. How tiring it must be to live like that--constantly alert to every possible advantage.

Wow! JL and Refugio really managed to dig themselves into a very deep, sh*tty hole. I'm a loyal friend, but I think I would know that I really couldn't be much help to my friend if I also became a fugitive, with yet another murder hanging over the both of us.

You know what could help? Telling Monse the truth and having her testify that she is the one who gave the money to JL-- meaning he didn't steal it from Bruno when he supposedly murdered him. That would take away the motive and weaken the case significantly. The authorities already know the gun doesn't even have JL's prints on it.

The main reason that Ale gave in on paying the damn DimDebt is because Gracie lied to him and said Monse was more hurt that Ale denied their connection when he spoke to the fat dude. He felt sort of guilty after that. Gracie plays a good game of manipulation.
 

Thanks Urban Anthropologihst, for such a thoroigh and observant recap. Reading it I felt like you were having lots of fun with the 'alternative' voice of Wharton.

Graciela's costume was really awful. I want Alejandro to send her to fashion consultant AND a good shrink. Although her outfits are definately providing comic relief in the series.

I like Daniela's interpretation of the Graciela character. I feel like she is playing the part with a twinkle in her eye--of course, she knows the basic story well! Ha ha ha. She is going to milk the Alejandro cow dry, if she can.

I wish I could bring myself to care about Jose Luis. Mostly I just find him irritating and incredibly stupid. I am already cheering for Alejandro.

I saw your late comment on my recap. Yes, indeedy that bracelet was the one Benny gave Gracie in a flashback she had of Benny putting it on her wrist and her oohhhing and ahhhhing over it. She is as guilty of offing Benny as Juvie is.
 

In the words of one of my favorite authors - spectacular UA. Edith would be proud( let's just hope this has a happier ending than the vast majority of her novels. But then, that's why I love them. )

I had to fan my TV last night. Good gracious how Lord Al and Lady Mon steam up the screen. And gees, all Ale has to do is flash one of those smiles...girl, you are toast. I also loved that subtle scene of Lady Mon touching her lips.

As for The Defiant Ones (bows to the 1958 movie), what they do now will be interesting. I can't see them sticking around anywhere nearby. And word should get to Lady Mon soon that her former sweetie is now an escaped killer ( though he didn't do the shooting, minor detail lost on the rumor mill).

How in the world do these women wear those necklaces al day long?? I get a neck ache/headache just looking at those.

The fan is comparatively new. I'm such a sucker for these that I actually bought three more yesterday that I have yet to photograph. One will go into a giveaway package I'm prepping for my perfume forum.

I actually stopped caring about Jose Luis a few episodes ago. He showed no courage in his courtship of Monserrat by declining to approach her father when there was an opportunity. The Admiral would probably have liked him and created an promotion opportunity for him (which he may have stupidly declined).

His friend showed extremely poor judgement in last night's episode and there is no fixing this now.

I'm also predicting that Monserrat will never get that money back.
 

I'm joining the chorus of praise UA, this was lovely.

It was extremely difficult to pick favorites but they include: "she continues her attempt at coercing Lady Monserrat to conquer the heart [and yes, the hormones] of Lord Alejandro", "Methinks after this he should worry about the intelligence of his future heirs}", "Percussive music sounds through this most disagreeable scene", "... before exiting to fetch her merchandise daughter" and "the local police relate the finding of the lieutenant's corpse to His Honour [who has none, really]".

Well thought out and detailed elegantly.

Refugio has gone above and unfortunately, way beyond the bounds of friendship. I agree, things have gone too far and he is lost as is JL (although technically he has done nothing wrong just guilt by association). How long can these fugitives last, injured and without funds?

Vivi, thank you for explaining why Ale agreed to pay the debt. Graciela always knows just the right needling technique to use - to inspire guilt, fear or anger. Master manipulator (yes, graceless among other things La Paloma).

I am thoroughly enjoying Angelique Boyer's performance here. She emotes well and agree Madelaine, she and Ale are smokin'...I also enjoyed her touching her lips and remembering Ale's passionate kiss. Daisy, I'm with you - get that fan going girl.

Elna June and UA, I think JL has been dealt a bad hand but agree that he has been cowardly (at worst)/ineffectual (at best) in seeking Monse's hand. Ale is the clear cut winner here.

I don't think Dimwit has learned his lesson and don't expect this to be the last time he gambles away more money he doesn't have.

Finally, fashion. So that was a shawl Gracie was sporting UA? I couldn't for the life of me figure out why the last few inches of her "skirt" were transparent. The shawl would explain it. Ack. That look. My eyes, my eyes! :)

Thanks for fantastic, inspired re-cap. I love the name Countess Graceless and your funny observations about how she took a big ol' whiff of those flowers as if they'd been sent for her.

It's funny how she thinks she needs to "help" Monse conquer Alejandro, not quite getting that the reasons Monse is loved by Alejandro have nothing to do with Gracie's machinations. I guess we're getting a glimpse of how Gracie believes she conquered Lauro and Benjamin.

Does anyone else think that Graceless is frigid? I think only a frigid woman could use the promise of sex to entrap a man because a woman who holds out for love would never turn it into a chess game like she does.
 

I don't think that Graceless is frigid. She sure looked like she was having fun with Benny in that flashback. She is also attracted to Ale. She may be frigid with Lauro though, even though she seems to care for him.

I'm also surprised that Graceless is in charge of running the hacienda. Lauro should get himself an experienced captaz and oversee him. No wonder he is broke. Graceless doesn't seem to have the slightest inkling on how to run a hacienda, just how to spend the money it generates.
 

Frigid women are good at faking it.

Whom do you think has done the most financial damage, Graceless or Dimwit?

Graceless might have a lot of dinero in jewelry, which at least doesn't depreciate in value.

I was so proud of Alejandro for immediately unmasking Dim's lie (he said the family needed the money) and then not falling for the implication that it was up to Alejo to save Lauro from the consequences of Dim's stupidity.

Of course a few scenes later, we see that Alejandro is putty in the hands of the master manipulator herself, Graciela.

So María spends her small savings on flowers for Alejandro's homecoming and he doesn't even show up. [Next time she should just TP the trees like the kids do around here -- it's cheaper and it lasts longer.]

So pathetic -- she's standing there, stork-like, balanced on her good leg in the drive of the hacienda, watching for his camioneta. And he's sending ginormous bouquets of roses to Montserrat and cleaning up Dim's messes. There's going to be payback for this...

Oh dear, I really had hopes that JL's friend would help get him out of his jam somehow. Refugio is even more lame than JL.

Once again Lady Graceless (love the name) did not disappoint. What an amazingly atrocious outfit!

Sylvia, I caught that on a profile shot. Sebastian has slightly fuller lips, but not enough to lose that decisive look so essential to alpha males.

We definitely need to keep capturing the fashion felonies for this blog. Of all the more mature actresses I think Daniela Castro has the longest rap sheet for this particular crime.
 

But Daniela Castro looked fab in UFCS. She had the best clothing on that TN as Pina. She was always chic there. These clothes for her in this TN look like castoffs from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" or something ; )

That outfit was the worst yet...but it is good comic relief, actually. I don't want to see her in tasteless clothing - it would be too out of character:-)

I too am loving the chemistry between Ale and Me, er, I mean, Monse, heehee.

However, it is so fast - that is the thing I don't like so much... I preferred the slow brewing tempo of Marina and DamFab on LaT, or...Lucero and Jaime on PESE (does anybody remember that, I loved that TV?) or Fernando and Lucero on STUD.... anyway, you get my point.... slow is good, but I'll take this.

The Refugio shooting took me by surprise and I was glad he didn't die - I love this actor. And J.L., well.... I still feel for him, but he just doesn't have the gravitas that Ale has!
 

Love the Edith Wharton style UA, and the Charlton Heston insight. Fortunately Rulli is not quite as pompous as old Charlton was.

Like you and Elna June, I'm not a fan of Juan Luis which is a relief. In Amor Real, you really hurt for Solis, even while rooting for Colunga. Here I'm feeling no push-pull whatsoever. Let's get on with the boda!

Mads, Lady G's latest get-up definitely has some nightmarish steam punk-can't-decide-if-I'm-a-virgin-or slut thing going on.
 

Daniela Castro's characters always seem to have bold and/or tasteless style. I also liked her cutting edge fashions in Familia. Her ethnic themed outfits in Mi Pecado were really interesting. It definitely makes her characters the center of attention when they are in the room, and certainly her characters like to be the center of attention. Mission accomplished. She packs a lot of punch for such a little woman.
 

Does anyone know how long this series is projected to be?
 

Thanks so much, UA. It's funny that you referred to Graciela as graceless because that is what I always call her in my thoughts. She surely has no grace. I agree that she is constantly scheming and must be exhausted from all those plans bubbling in her brain.

It appears that G. has been given a certain look..very 80s...Cindy Lauper comes to mind.

Judyb...I agree that even though I did not want Antonio to end up with Matilde in Amor Real, he was a tragic figure , and I felt sorry for him. Unlike JL, Antonio met a guy in prison who escaped with him and became his BFF.

Also, in Amor Real, Manuel paid the brother's gambling debt. Like Dim, the brother was a lazy wastrel who drank, gambled, and caroused.

Well, I still have not unpacked from our trip to Toronto, but I have managed to throw some Christmas decorations and lights around to get into the holiday spirit. I hope that everyone had a happy Thanksgiving.

Susanlynn, I can't decide. I don't think she can either. I think she's trying for all looks at once. Cindy Lauper blended with Madonna in her Desperately Seeking Susan era.

I think with last night's outfit, and I will detail here what I can remember:

Beaver dam hair;

Short tight burgandy skirt;

As UA said, fringed burgundy tablecloth tied around the waist, longer in back than front;

(UA, perhaps in honor of Wharton we should consider this a piano shawl? Just a thought...)

An ivory cross-over stiff-silk taffeta blouse, with a pleated ruffle stand-up collar and trim;

A neck ornaments made from last year's silk flower arrangement and a few unused Holiday decorations, tied askew;

A wide black leather belt tied over the blouse, skirt,

And, last but not, a pair of gladiator-type black or brown boots.

Susanlynn, I think Graciela is already channeling Lady Gaga on a down day.

Perhaps she was raised with a lot of siblings and goes by the Irish saying.."first up! best dressed." It seems that she just keeps adding layer after layer...."okay, I'll put on this scarf...and that necklace...and I need a bow in this mop....my hair needs some tousling...where's that eggbeater????" G is definitely not a "less is more" kind of gal. She's more of a Dolly Parton "more is more" type. She believes in gilding that lily.
 

In response to Urban Anthropologist's question about the length of the series: I saw on a Twitter feed that it was supposed to end at 160 but the due to the producer of the next TN's schedule, it as has been increased to 175.
 

Kristen- Oh no! If I were the producer of a tn, I would say, screw the producer who can't get their act together enough to have their tn ready to go by the time mine is done-- I'm not extending! This one just started a few weeks ago in Mexico. They already know the next one in that timeslot is going to be behind schedule?
 

Apparently, the producer Nicandro Diaz want to produce your next novel after the World Cup, Televisa was forced to stretch Lo Que because of Diaz's schedule. It was actually supposed to 150 but got stretched to 175.

Doris...re your comment on the last episode....in Amor Real, we met the galan's father on his deathbed in the first episode. He was a very old man, and the leading lady's mother never had an affair with him. I am not even sure that she had ever met him. That mother was very worried about the family losing it's wealth and social standing , and she pushed her daughter to marry the galan even after discovering that he was a bastardo. She treated her daughter badly and pampered and spoiled her n'er-do-well son. However, unlike Gracie, she was very proper and dressed modestly.

Also, the galan in Amor Real had worked for his father without knowing he was his father. His father had him beaten for trying to learn to read. The priest was like Manuel's father. He tried to protect and educate him. Manuel became a doctor with the padre's help. The padre had an important role in Amor Real, but in this version, the padre seems to have disappeared now that Alehandsome has inherited his father's estate.
 

Susanlynn- The Padre here is being played by Eric del Castillo and he's in the opening credits sequence. I'm sure he'll be playing a big role eventually. There are some other topped billed actors that we haven't seen yet, at all.

It's interesting that you feel like this version is starting off more quickly than Amor Real did, as far as developments between the leads. The only complaints I've read about this so far is people thinking it started off too slowly! They want them to get to the wedding already. Obviously folks today like these plots to move at warp speed (even if the tn is going to be long). Perhaps that is the secret of the success of a tn like Corazon Indomable-- it moves rapidly (and senselessly) from one plot point to another, with no real character development or continuity, yet people love it.
 

Vivi...I have come to think of CI as a pinball machine with Mari as the ball being flung here and there and then back again without rhyme or reason. DINGDINGDING
 

It's been a while since I saw Amor Real and I never saw Bodas de Odio, but it would be interesting to see the differences.

El Privilegio de Amar is currently on UniMas in the mornings and it is so much better than Triunfo del Amor. One of the main reasons is because the scenes are longer so the story doesn't feel rushed. I wonder whether TdA would seem better if the scenes were edited so that it wouldn't feel so choppy. I sometimes feel like I'm getting whiplash when it goes back and forth between two or three sets of characters 4 times instead of 2.

I feel very sad for José Luis and Refugio. I would think that the escape attempt and the murder pretty well seals their fate.

Graciella's outfit helps to make the case against that hi-lo look that Maricruz (CI) introduced us (well me) to. Bless her heart, I was embarrassed for her.

ITA with everyone that Ale should not have paid Dimibrow's debt, but Graceless is an excellent manipulator. I did like that fact that Ale called out Dimi when he paid him a visit. It was so awesome to watch Ale shrove Dimi around and say NO! to his face when he asked for the money. Dimibrow needs to be taught a lesson and quick.

JL and Refugio are doomed. As far as I can see. I don't get why Ref shot the guy. They were going to be in enough trouble by escaping, now they have a murder on their hands. There is no way they can escape some hard jail time. But I guess this had to happen in order to separate JL from Montse.

Graceless is such a perfect name. I think DC has hair extensions. And they are not helping. I had to turn away when she came out with that short, red, lacy wanna be skirt. OMG, stop dressing her in those short skirts! I yelled at the TV screen last night. I am not one to talk, but she does not have very feminine legs (they look like chicken legs). They need to be covered. I vote for pants!

Montse, on the other hand, can wear short dresses. Of course I don't think Ale cares what she wears! He would love her in anything. This couple really knows how to heat up the screen.
Madelaine: ITA, you can not only see their attraction, but feel it too. WOW! I also liked Montse touching her lips; she is totally attracted to Ale. I think that Montse liked the fact that Ale wanted to talk to her father about their relationship, unlike JL, who would keep making excuses. Can't wait to see what happens tonight!

I think Graceless has been trying to hang onto her youth, but her hands must be greased because it's slipping away.

JL and Refugio are doomed and this is the domino effect of Graceless' actions. Without her going to the captain JL wouldn't have been in the stockade. He might have been arrested by the civilian police but with no fingerprints on the gun he would have had an excellent chance of getting free.
 

Thanks UA for the recap. I really like the styles and themes you present. I did not know who Edith Wharton was until now.

As for the show,
Echo what everyone else said....what was Gracie wearing?? She looked so sloppy. Glad she did not pass her sense of fashion to Montse.

I don't know what Refugio made their lives more complicated by shooting that guy. Maybe he was just reacting quickly for fear of the Lt (or captain??) killing his best friend.

I saw Amor Real and comparatively I think this is moving a little slower. I do not mind since i am enjoying the way the writing and most of the characters.
 

I would think that it would have been easier to move to the wedding/marriage portion of the story more quickly in Amor Real, since being set over 100 years ago, it was a LOT easier to pressure one's daughter into an arranged marriage. Here, they have to give some more compelling reasons for 21st century Monse to eventually agree to this-- mounting and continued family pressure, sick father, bitterness/disillusionment with JL and love in general, and a growing attraction to Ale (even if she doesn't want to admit it). For all of that to happen, the writers have to dedicate a bit of time.
 

Thank you Urban. Your lofty yet totally engaging rendition of tonight's action makes me feel that watching Robo is a scholarly as well as pleasurable pursuit! Action! Passion! Intrigue! I love how Alejandro is perdidamente enamorado, head over heels in love with Montse. It will be so sweet to see her slowly fall for the dreamy-eyed Alejandro which Montse is capable of doing all by herself without that damned pimp of a "mother" pushing her at every turn. Talk about blowing a high! Thanks again, Urban, look forward to tonight's action.

UrbanA - Thank you for the recap! Edith Wharton, eh? That brought back memories of me reading Ethan Frome some 20+ years ago.... I think the main character (EF?) finally killed himself (suicide) while sledding in the snow? Depressing book and I avoid EW literature ever since.

Oh, my eyes!!! My eyes!!! Graci was wearing the original mullet skirt. I would have liked a closeup just to solve the puzzle of how that thing was designed, engineered, and sewn up.

JudyB - I completely, totally agree with you. He was such a tragic hero-of-sorts. M.Islas owned that role and he was amazing. I think of it weren't for his scandal around the time AR was broadcast, he would have won some awards.
This JL character is not very sympathetic; "no push-pull whatsoever." Toss him to the sharks and bring on the boda, por favor.
 

I am intrigued with the information about why episodes are added to these stories. I had been thinking that it was for advertising dollars--if your 'box office' was high you could raise advertising prices and sell more so you draw it out for a few weeks. The explanation that you have to fill the shoes of a poorly organized dirctor who is behind schedule is quite different, although no less plausible.
 

Urban, I'm sorry I'm late. I just wanna tell you that I think this is an awesome recap. I like the Old English style.
