Mentir Para Vivir #53 Fri 12/20/13 Tito’s Grand Return Comes At A High Price

[MENTIR BEGINS AT 7 PM EASTERN TONIGHT! --ED.]

capítulo 53

Lo Del Pasado:

Homero, Leo and Ricardo have just been shot at and Grandpa Spooks lets Ric know that he’s well aware of quite a bit of what’s been going on with him and the Aresti family.  It’s just a matter of fitting all the pieces correctly to put that puzzle together.  Being shot at is not something Homero would consider a normal sort of familial problem, he has insisted.  Therefore, since he knew Gabe, he’s told Ric if Ric needs his assistance he’s there to help out.  Ric isn’t sure that he can trust the man.  Viewerville isn’t either cuz El Grandpa Spooks de Homero has just put in a call to Manolo.

Lo Del Nuevo:

Manolo informs Spooks where he can find the old owners of El Descanso at the time of Gabe’s murder, namely, Lucina.

Leo tries to assure Ric on his way out of Spook Manor that his gramps is really a fair guy and that he can be counted on.  Ric still refuses to let Leo come to the beach house with Tito, preferring to keep things on the Q.T. as much as possible since others are following him and obviously mean to kill him.  Leo asks who, but Ric keeps mum and leaves.

Manolo calls his cuz to inform him that Spooks de la Garza called him for information about Gabe’s murder in San Carlos.  They discuss the fact that if Spooks keeps nosing around [hurgarse] he’s bound to find out about the connection between the defunct lowbrow de Bruno Martin and that he and Gabe were both killed by the same .44 caliber gun.  Cousin Gadget gripes that Manolo hasn’t told him all he knows and warns him not to take him by surprise [aggarar de abajo], leaving the flatfoot flat footed.

Ricardo makes a nighttime call to Oriana and tells her how much he misses her.  She tells him how badly she feels about putting out all these people because of her problems.  Yadda, yadda, yadda….. He may have an answer, though, since he met someone important, he tells her.  First he’s got to investigate things and they’ll talk when he brings El Tito the next day.

The next morning, Spooks has decided to invite himself and Leo to come along with Ric and Tito to the beach house.  Leo has to call Ric and give him the blue news.

Although Dios took an angel away when Palomita died, he replaced her with Oriana and Lina, says Paloma to 2nes.  She doesn’t care if they’re not blood relations at all.  She loves them as if they were.  Oriana apologizes for all the trouble she’s brought to her life and into her household, but Paloma assures her she also brought her a great deal of love and happiness.  (Not to mention EXCITEMENT, cuz the old gal had to be dying of boredom!)  Paloma encourages her to fight the good fight…..

Piero and Ric discuss the possibility that Spooks will end up having Oriana put in jail over the false passports business, and even if they don’t charge her for Gabe’s murder, she may end up there while the police sort out the facts [“mientras que son manzanas o peras=until they make sure].  Ric thinks they should trust Leo’s abuelo anyway.  He takes the call from Leo who tells him how Grandpa Spooks is insisting on bringing the dog himself in their bulletproof van.

Ricardo has apparently agreed to let Piero come with him.   Piero’s discovered he’s  got a crazy thing for teen-aged Fabiola (something which makes Viewerville more than a bit queasy seeing that trait in a galan’s BFF) and he plans to celebrate Fabiola’s eighteenth BDay cuz this knocks her out of jail bait territory.  Ric’s “reformed” rapist BFF has all his fingers and toes crossed that Fabi has a thing for guys twice her age also.

After Leo’s call Ric and Pierrrrrrito put their delivery van plans into motion.  The two of them will be hidden in the back of an Aresti delivery truck to Fidelia’s not so secret safe-house by the sea.

Ric tells Oriana that he’s bringing Tito, but there’s been a wrench thrown into the works: Leonardo’s crazy old connected ex-FIS, Grampa Spooks de Homero, insists on coming with his grandson in a bullet-proof van to bring El Tito to the beach house with them.   Oriana worries about Homero’s true intentions and if Leonardo’s Grandpa Spooks is really planning on arresting her (do they have citizen’s arrest in Mexico?) right then and there for falsifying her passport, even though Ric has told her to trust the old man’s offer of help.  After hanging up she makes Paloma promise that if something happens to her, she will keep Alina with her.  (Come on, Oriana!  It would be a real bummer for his grandson if he turned into a party pooper, not to mention Leo would never forgive him for screwing up his only chance for a serious relationship with Fabiola!)  Paloma agrees, natch.

Before leaving, Spooks gets on the phone with a contact of his for any information about Francisco Castro, his company and his personal background as well as one Oriana Caligaris, wanted for murder in San Carlos.

At the same time, Jose Luis, aka Francisco,  and Raquel look for cars.  He refuses to buy her a fancy car cuz it would stand out like a sore thumb and will be easier to lie that she’s buying it herself and making monthly payments [de plazos = on the installment plan].  He insists she’s not to let Lucina know about their relationship, either which really fries her frijoles!

The caravan gets rolling.  Neither Eliseo nor the PI have a clue what’s what and they let the trucks pass by without a second thought.  Eliseo passes time playing hopscotch on the sidewalk in front of the company’s home offices.

Mariano, Padre De-plaided, greets his replacement at the rectory.  The older priest and friend is certain the bishop will eventually give Mariano back his flock, but Mariano says he’s not sure he really wants it back.  The whole experience has left him bewildered [desconcertado=feeling perplexed/confused].

Over at Ft. Fakecisco, JL is on the phone with his huffing jefe, Joaquin, who refuses to let JL off the hook or out of the business.   He’s just too good at what he does…..  He’s especially upset that JL didn’t make himself president of their new company and reminds Jose Luis of the huge amounts of money he spent doing all those favors for him saving him and his wife’s skin and tells him what a coward [colon] he is.  (Ruh-roh.  There goes Joquin banging on the bongos again.)  He is not a happy camper but manages to hide it, even seeming to eventually give in “—Well, then, your earnings are going to go down.”  JL says that’s fine by him.

Grampa Spooks now tells Leo what he found out about the woman that was accused of killing his old acquaintance, Gabriel Sanchez-Bretton, Oriana Caligaris: that she was married to a man in league with gold smugglers, Jose Luis Falcon and that he supposedly died in a raid [redada] while she escaped and fled to Mexico; and how somebody unknown hired a lawyer to have a handwriting analyst check her signature on the contraband account and was exonerated of the crime; but anything else that’s come up since, he’s got to check out first before discussing it with Leo.

While Pierrrrrro is suffering from overheating and a bit of claustrophobia, he and Ric argue over Spook de la Garza’s true intentions in forcing himself on them at the beach house.  Ric says he’s going to trust the man.

In the meantime, Eliseo is still trying to find out the name of the family living behind the huge security wall that shot at him.  One of the servants comes out to walk Leo’s great dane and Eliseo walks up pretending he’s to look for a job there because somebody told him they were looking to hire.  The servant tells him not to try putting one over on him [pasar de listo] or he’ll let Nerron have him for lunch.  Eliseo backs down.  He calls JL to tell him he’s had no luck getting the name of the old man who shot at him.  JL tells him to get rid of the car he’s been driving—roll it over into some ravine [barranco=gorge/ravine] or leave it in a junkyard [deshuesadero] somewhere.

At the same time, Spooks gets on the speaker phone with Inspector Cuz and asks him to trace a car with a busted windshield and a bullet hole.  Might be in a garage somewhere getting fixed, he tells him.  The old guy managed to remember most of the license plate number also and gives it to him.  They agree to meet to discuss the murder at Lucina’s B&B when he gets back from vacation.

Antonio calls for instructions on what to say during a meeting where he’s offering Ric’s head accountant a job with Fakecisco’s new company at double the salary.    Escalona is not supposed to be told they’re laundering money with this venture, though.  JL gets Sebastian’s address from Antonio in order to drop by and offer him a different position with the new company.

A bit later Fakecisco shows up at Sebastardo’s digs and offers him the job.  Seb, still in his undies, isn’t interested til he hears the company is going to be in direct competition with Ric’s.  He says fine, he’ll accept. But, no drudge jobs, no set work schedule, and no time card crap.

Over at Benigno’s pocilga [pigsty], his ex-whore of a sleaze-squeeze starts nagging him to get over to the hospital to see Maria whether he wants anything more to do with her or not, cuz otherwise, if  Ric will surely stop paying him.  Maligno de Benigno gripes that if she dies those payments stop anyway.

Across the way at the B&B Lucina gets a call from Manolo about the former FIS asking questions about her and that he’ll be stopping by to ask her questions about the murders and possibly Oriana and Gabe’s murder, though no, he didn’t discuss “2nes” details with him.

Near the beach house Leo and Spooks are stopped by the “security guards” Ric set up.  Spooks notes the rifles are old and wouldn’t be worth a damn if they were attacked by contrabando’s and their AK-47’s.

At the same time, Lucina tries getting in touch with 2nes through Ric’s secretary.  She won’t give her that number, but has Ric link into Lucina’s call while en route.  Lu warns Ric that Mano told Spooks all about Oriana’s supposed involvement in Gabe’s murder and that Mano did not go into the True-nes and false passports part of it.

Raqi walks in on the end of the call and gripes that Lucina’s too worried about might happen to Oriana.  She could give a rat’s patoot!  Felipe accidentally hears their conversation from a distance as the two argue about who’s going to jail for falsifying passports or not.  They then argue over how sincere JL is in this so-called two-way relationship.  Lucina, who Raqi would be wize to listen to since she’s been there, done that and got the proverbial tee-shirt, warns her that when Jose Luis finishes with her he’ll throw her and the goodies he gave her out on her hind end cuz even if she’s better in bed than his wife, it’s his wife and he’s emotionally tied to her, period.  The “other woman” never has a snowballs chance in Hell against that kind of an attachment.  And, advises Lucina, Raqi better start to worry because otherwise there’s a good chance the two of them will be sharing one heck of a dirty rat-infested jail cell together!  Lu walks away indignant and Felipe comes with the drink Raqi ordered.  Raq give him hell for playing dumb when she knows he had to have heard of it and then she threatens him.   “—You had better keep your big snout shut or I will make certain my boyfriend slits your throat!”

As they draw near the beach house, Ric calls Oriana to let her know that Leo and Grandpa Snoops have invited themselves there and have Tito with him.  However, he’s learned that Snoops has no knowledge of her false identity and she’s to take advantage of [abusarse] that fact if need be.  He hangs up.

Leo and Grampa Snoops walk in to the beach house totally unexpected, but Fidelia doesn’t seem to mind.  On the other hand, Paloma immediately has her back up and begins to hiss.  “—Can’t I give you a kiss hello, Paloma?”  “—That depends on what you came here for!”  Old Snoops seems to be both suave and debonair as he brushes aside her snide remark handily.   He’s got nothing bad in mind, he tries to assure her.  She doesn’t believe him.  (Man, this old dude had a really first rate rep, didn’t he?)  2nes takes Tito out of Leo’s hands and hugs him.  Paloma introduces her to Snoops as her granddaughter.  2nes thanks Leo and he tells her to make sure she keeps him on a leash [correa] for now because he’s still not completely healed.  (Runaway dog alert!!)  Leo meets Lina and tells her the same.  Fabi arrives and Leo and she exchange happy, excited glances.

Snoops compliments Paloma on her lovely family.  “—Yeah, and I won’t let anybody ruin it, either!”  He looks wide-eyed at her and asks why she’d say that to him.  “—You know very well and I know you!”  Ric arrives just then with Pierrrrro.  While they are all around the dining room table, Snoops starts asking seemingly innocent questions, like how old Lina is. The young folks go off to their rooms and Paloma faces off with Homero.  “—You didn’t come here because of a sick dog.  You came here for a purpose.  What is it?”  He answers her question with one of his own.  “—Why didn’t you leave your husband when Palomita left home?”  “—Because of cowardice.  I was afraid of him.  But Ive changed since I found my granddaughter and great granddaughter!”  He changes the subject.  “--Might I ask why so much security around the place?”   Fidelia lies about there being so many robberies lately in the vicinity. “-- And what if commandos with huge caliber weapons should attack?

Ric asks why such an interest.  Well, says Grampa Snoops, it’s evident you’re in hiding; and I would like to know from whom—Jose Luis Falcon or Francisco Castro?  Duhn-duhn-duhnnnnnn!!!!!

Gramps is half wise owl, half pitbull who doesn't let go once he's latched on. Whether they all like it or not, he's now a member of the Scooby Doo Gang.

Seeing Tito comfortably cuddled on Leo's chest, reminds me of how sweet this actor was with the little dog named Abeja in Una Familia con Suerte. And someone here (Alejo?) mentioned here that the Doberman is his dog in real life. Obviously, he's an animal lover, and the dogs sense it.

Vivi - I agree with what you said so well about Homero. He's a nice addition to the Gang, bringing some pizzazz to the unfolding events. I want to see him and Lucina in a room together!

Tito looked so cute in the car with Leo and Homero. He was obviously at home with them and actually seemed a little happier than usual (I know I am projecting -- I'd be happier with those guys than in the Paloma mansion with Matilde looking to get rid of me!)

The actor who plays Leo was in Palabra de Mujerf some years ago, playing Juan Soler's rebellious son. He was a late teenager at that point and looked just different enough that I almost didn't recognize him. He has become such a good looking and able actor!

Did we see a teaser image of Marilu and Ricardo at the altar? Yikes -- lots of changes coming our way.

I'm going to have a marathon tonight and with the help of recappers and recordings I'm going to catch up with this. I don't care what the ratings say, it's a good show.

Has Tito wagged his tail yet?

The weekend is my time to catch up also.

I just finished watching and I must say I need some serious conversation translations. 5ft Latina was right about talk talk talk and very fast with words I don't know.

yeah, vivi, i mentioned, neron is the dog of ODL. He wrote it on his twitterprofile.
I haven't read the recap of Diva yet, but I remembered from this episode, that tito was so cute when he sat in the car, and looking forward between Homero and Leo

Later i will write a longer comment. :)

Jardinera - Great title.

Tito seems to have returned to minimalist acting. I was expecting much more emotion when he saw Alina. But maybe he was overwhelmed by so many new faces and places. Variopinta, Tito has wagged his tail at least once in the past, but that's really not his thing.

Ricky looks funny trying to deal with Homero. He understandably wants Ori to think he's got everything under control, but Homero is too much (in a good way).

Tito is an adorable dog and this isn't my favorite breed, either.

I do like that the actor playing Leo is an animal lover and dogs seem to love him. There have been other actors' dogs in novelas before and that's beautiful.

Tito needs a nice soft bed, some rawhide bones, and gourmet dog food at the beach house until the finale so he won't run afoul of JL anymore.

I want to know how big is that beach house that even Homer and Leo could stay if they wanted.

Thanks Jardinera, and a double thanks for the vocabulary lessons. You pick just the right words to translate.

I thought Piero was going to throw up on that trip in the back of the van.

I hope that Sebastian is a total screw up in his job. That would serve JL right for hiring him. I also hope that the accountant that Antonio was trying to recruit tells Ric. And lastly, I wish Ricardo would quit wearing those hideous ascots.

Thank you, Jardinera. Excellent and wonderfully snarky as always. I appreciate it especially as you must be busy with the holiday -- as are many in Viewerville.

Spook Manor - perfect. What an odd character Homero is but he is adding something to the plot evolution and to the little group of very interesting characters that includes Lucina and Manolo.

Jardinera654, you NEVER disappoint!!

I especially loved: a) Ft. Fakecisco and b) Padre de-Plaided! Where in the world you come up with some of these things, I never know, but I surely do enjoy them!!

I think once Piero gets a load of the googly eyes Fabiola will be making to Leo, that he will quickly change his mind. A Fabiola/Piero Pairing?! I seriously doubt it (no spoiler, just my own thoughts).

Urban, Tito dogs have never interested me, either, but I love this little pooch. He is Mr. Suave. All he needs is a pair of shades.

Raquel, just go away.

Fatima

I'm all caught up on this week's eps. So here are my thoughts.

Tito is a champ. He's just adorabo and I don't like dogs.

Homero and Leonardo are also adorable. I'm of two minds about Homero. I'm all 'Why you so nosy Homero?' And 'Go Homero, you make me smile!' especially when he's playing chess with Leonardo. Love Ric's face of passive aggressive horror when Homero is telling Ric how much he knows.

I actually felt sorry for Matilde after she found out Fab is pregnant. She did look like she cared about Fabiola for once and the actress who plays Mati is actually very pretty and a pretty crier. I'm sure they won't tell her where Fabi is until after the birthday party, but the actress playing Mati was good this week. I thought it was poignant when Ruben sat and held her hand and hugged her shoulder to comfort her. It's obvious Cesar and fabi get their sweet side from Ruben.

The Ric/Maria scene was also a stand-out for poignancy. The actress who plays Maria knocked it out the park as did DZand the actress did look bald to me. I also kind of felt sorry for Sebas when Ric called him and told him about Maria's tumor.

I want to know what illegal drugs the person who's dressing DZ in this are taking. I love DZ in this, but I can't with the ascots and cravats.

Basically, I think this was the best week of this tn-good, stand out acting from the cast. I do think they need to give Mayrin more to do than worry.

Excellent recap, Jardinera.

J desde NYC- Like you, I am of two minds about Grandpa Homero. He’s a great, dynamic character, and funny too. I think he will finally help the good guys get out of the neutral—they’ve been stuck for a while. But in doing that, I think he might also stir up a lot of trouble for them—especially Oriana. But maybe that just can’t be helped. His interactions with Leo are adorable and hilarious. The two actors have very good chemistry. And I love how he is with Paloma, who is at her prickly best with him right now.

I also think Pierro will realize how foolish he has been, and back away, once he sees Leo and Fabi making googly eyes at each other.

I would like Oriana to get out of weepy mode too. But I’ve heard that’s a signature of this particular writer. Perhaps with Homero on the scene stirring things up, it’ll bring Ori some new challenges and a return to the strong determined woman we have seen her be in the past.

Jardinera - Terrific recap. Love how you describe Grandpa Homero.

ITA about Ori in weepy mode. For me she has been at her best in the scenes where she's stood up to JL. But now that she's in hiding and the dark about the latest details Ricky has, there's nothing for her to do but, uh, weep. Of course, she knows JL will connect with his daughter somehow somewhere someday, so she could be preparing Alina on what to do if/when this happens.

With everyone sitting around Fidelia's huge table, I realized what MPV has lacked: good food. Like where is the food? I haven't seen any since MPV began, except for maybe some scrambled eggs at the hotel. Hope Fidelia brings great dishes for Fabiola's party.

Whew!! All caught up! Many thanks to all the recappers this week!! It's nice to be able to FF some scenes (I'm looking at you and your skeezer girlfriend Benigno) and read about the conversations in a recap.

I am loving Homero, but he is going to stir the pot.

I like that Tito became so integral to the plot.

My favorite scene: JL keeping Raquel in check. She needs a good slap.

The cuts to commercial and all their spoiler action are driving me crazy. I hope it turns out to be a case of things not being what they seem.

Vivi, LOL about Paloma being prickly around Homero. She was salty and rude! She acted as if she'd rip his eyes out if he got too nosy. Paloma knows Homero is a blodhound and she's trying to get him to back off. Not even a kiss on the cheek for Homero. They would make a great couple, though. I love Homero's catchphrase, 'I'm just curious!'

I think it's interesting Fab doesn't know Leo knows she's pregnant. How is that gonna play out?

I so dislike that neck-wear that Ric wears. To me it's a scarf, this is what an ascot looks like, to be worn with more formal dress. The TN's seem to be doing that to a lot of our galáns.

http://www.howtodothings.com/fashion-and-personal-care/a4607-how-to-wear-an-ascot.html

I was surprised at Paloma's reaction to Homero. She hasn't seen him in years and she is very abrupt with him, almost combative on their first meeting as if they are picking up where they left off years ago. That makes me think there was more to their relationship than we know right now. Maybe he jilted her before she married her husband?

cathyx, I, too, think there is a back story to the Paloma/Gramps relationship. I think that during a convo with Leo, Gramps mentioned something about having wooed Paloma or maybe he knew how Paloma's husband had treated her. Either way, Gramps had more than a passing acquaintance with Paloma.

I am looking forward to seeing this story line expand!!

Fatima

Cathy, I don't think Homero jilted her. He said to Leo that he just stepped out the way when Sr. Aresti was pursuing her more aggressively than he was and she seemed to like Sr. Aresti more than him.

Variopinta, I agree that what the ever the neckwear is they are doing with Ric is not ascots or cravats since Ric's are so sloppily done and informal. I just want Ric's gone. Keep the man in Oxford shirts and jeans, chinos, a suit, whatever they have Cesar in, because the neckwear is off putting.

How's the romance between Fabi and Leo going to go if she's preggers w Sebas' baby? I think Piero knows his thing for Fabi is crazy, but he can't help how he feels is his thinking.

Jardinera thanks so much for your recap. I'm intrigued by Gramps and can't wait to actually see him in action. As others have mentioned, he will help the good guys but he may cause some problems for Oriana.

Thanks for this great recap, Jardinera. I read this earlier today before actually watching the episode just now. Your description and narrative were perfectly on target so much so that while watching, it almost seemed like I was rewatching.

A cute thing I noticed while watching the episode was that as he was waiting outside of Secret Agent Grampa's home, Eliseo spied a hopscotch pattern sketched on the sidewalk and actually hopscotched, nimbly negotiating the pattern.

I'm so glad that little Lina and little Tito are reunited.

Carlos

Thanks, amig@s! I do realize that we're all involved with last minute holiday needs so I wanted to say a special thanks to all of you who've taken time to read and comment.

Definitely ITA that there are a few smoldering embers where Paloma and Snoops are concerned. Gramps may be elderly, but he's still "got it" for Paloma and vice versa. Altekakers in walkers.....

(Carlos: Thank you also for all the chuckles and outright guffaws during CI. ViviDC:I still have to watch the full "fin".)

ITA this show has been halfway decent and keeps me coming back for the next move the ScoobyDo's will make. I like the fact that Grampa Snoops has been added in to the mix here.

Hey, isn't Tito the same Taco Bell pooch or his succcessor?

I caught up last night.
Don't forget 7PM EST tonight.

I don't know why it bothers me that Tito doesn't wag his tail, I paid particular attention last night, not once. I have never seen a dog that doesn't wag his tail. Yo quiero Tito though, even though that is the only kind of dog that ever bit me & one that wanted to.

You want the little guy to be happy and wagging the tail is the best evidence.

I wonder if several different dogs are used for this role.

I don´t think they can find another dog that doesn´t wag his tail.

Capcha is only showing readable numbers now, imagine that.

OT: Am I the only one scratching my head over a 10PM comedy? *shrug*

I'm really looking forward see what those meddling kids do tonight!

Yeah, Tito doesn't tailwag at all. Maybe it's the breed-he looks like a purebred- or maybe how he's been trained. He's such a cool customer and too cool for school, which is why we like him so much. As Fatima said, all he needs are some shades and he'd be good to go.

Gracias, Jardinera!
