Pobres Ep 5 Jan 10, 2014... Whose land is it anyway?
we see a repeat of scene where A-hole fakes some praises to MA and then we go to the Menchaca's where they are hoping the fonda business will go very well. La nina de los ojos bonitos will do very well and Diosito won't let us down. they are smiling, laughing, etc. Carmelita asks Lupita what is really going on? Lupita tells her about the school tuition issue. Carmelita suggests move him to public school but Lupita won't even consider that, even if she has to work her back out.
Back to RP, MA is starting the business meeting, but the auditors come on with the bad news about the fraud. MA accuses A-hole but he glances 'who? me??'... the auditors point the fingers to MA as the only one responsible.
Lo nuevo:
Back to Menchacas. Food is ready. Carmelita and Lupita are looking around to check if there is anything else to do before opening the doors. Carmelita cheers Lupita a bit. and gives her her blessing. Lupita thanks her, that is exactly what my mom would have done... Time to open the door!!
At meeting, Saul is vowing for MA to the auditors. He and MA will investigate and they will get back to them. MA protests, I have only been here as prez for a month, and you think I had enough time to run a fraud?? But A-hole keeps twisting the knife, you will have to face the law but also the investors, and you were claiming the authority, etc... enough for MA to grab him by his jacket lapel and accuse 'it was you who set this up, right??'
Back to Fonda... El coliseo de Roma... (the name of the fonda is 'The Rome Colisseum' even though it is typical mexican home cooking... ) some guys come by, the ladies try to turn them into the first customers but the guys were actually looking for the gym and are not interested in the restaurant.
Back to the family feud... the older members of the council question 'what would your granddad say about this??' MA says dont worry, we will figure it out. The older men warn MA that if he can't clear this up, the corporate investors will also be acting soon.
Lupita and her family are worried that the fonda is not taking off as fast as she wanted. Papa Chuy says dont worry, God will see us through. The young guy (Lupita's brother?)
Leonardo and Ana Sophy are at a gallery, she is having guilt trip about the way they are treating MA. Leonardo not so ready to make ammends with MA. AS is wasted... and mentions MA's England expansion project, pretty ambitious if you ask me.
At corporate, Saul and MA are looking at numbers, they are discussing that the investment he found for the expansion project is not documented so it is not clear for the government how he planned to fund the project. Btw, all your bank accounts are frozen. MA's accounts are frozen, and he has nothing left behind in England. Then MA remembers that all the family assetts are in his name, if his assets are taken by the government, all of them will end up on the street.
Back to the gallery... they won't allow her dog in. She tries to pull rank, she is close friends with the Director of the Cultural Agency. Leonardo says some bs about DaVinci's poop being collectors items. (LOL!) then both Leonardo and Ana Sophy caress the pup with their faces... (these two are coo-coo for sure)
Back to RP, Saul and MA continue to talk through the assets subject. MA still thinking he can solve the situation without his family's help. Saul says cannot touch any of the properties that are about to be claimed by government. MA mentions the one that is on grandma's name. Saul will investigate.
Back at Menchaca's fonda, there is a new version of the Roquettes, the entire family (armed with trays of sample food) are lined up dancing in front of the place (painted royal blue, is that a common color in Italy?) to try to attract customers. Don Chuy has a huge horn and is shouting statements about the restaurant being a famous... Nepo and a few of his buddies are more than willing to be the first customers.
Back at RP, MA is trying to talk to his mom Ana Sophy about the problem they are facing... She is wasted, mentions the England expansion project shows his intention to help the family. The family you left behind but now are trying to help out. She had bought a painting at the gallery... She is giving it to him, it is a picture of dollar bills with dice... (oops!) MA is trying to keep his composure. He tells his mom to take care of the money he just gave her (didn't she already gamble that away??). She takes her leave (or she would have spilled to him that that money is history). She leaves and Saul comes in. Saul asks how MA will fix the issue. Saul found something that might give him some cash flow but it is within the property belonging to his grandma Mati.
Just as if they could wiggle their nose and transport themselves to see grandma Mati, they are there. Saul says she just needs to sign on a document. But it might be tricky to be able to run through a real estate sale at this moment (because the assets are about to be frozen). Mati says that land meant a lot to his grandpa. What did he say?? she does remember it was a huge piece of land, enough to build a castle on. MA and Saul exchange stares and funny glances. They will have to go see this land and go from there.
At fonda, they are closing down... Carmelita comes by and Don Chuy walks around her (guess it won't be love at first sight, not even at several years co-existence in same vecindad).
Nighttime at Minerva's apt... what if AS talks to the bishop and let us marry here at cathedral? Mom doesn't doubt it. We have to buy the best of everything, after all your fiancee will pay for everything. The doorbell rings, everyone expects it is MA but it is A-hole. He came to 'do the good deed' to tell them that the RP are about to fall out of grace (money, social, etc).
Back at fonda... Don Chuy says dont worry about the school tuition, God will provide.
Back at Minerva's apt... apparently A-hole has some good reason to try to convince Minerva not to marry MA... is he still interested in her? or just to twist the knife on MA again?
MA and Saul (in the red car!, i thought he had chosen the white, but whatever)... are at Menchaca's building knocking on the door... Lupita comes out and we get a frozen glance between MA and Lupita.
MA: You?
L: Yes, and what are YOU doing here?
MA invites herself into her house to explain why they are there.
Minerva tells her mom the 'fraud' story must be a prank by A-hole. Mom is not so sure, and she wants Minerva to ensure it is a lie because she 'does not want to be poor again. seems her husband had a 'fall from grace' moment. She is adamant about the chance to go back to poor. Minerva asks her if she never loved 'mi papi'... Mom apparently did marry for 'moving up' and convenience too, after all.
In Menchaca living room, Saul has run the meeting very 'business-like'... Don Chuy wants a 'cristiano' language translation. MA puts it simply 'this land belongs to my family, so we need for you to find another place so we (our family) can take over this property. Don Chuy says 'this house is the house of the Menchaca's.' Lupita backs him up. MA gets serious and says 'if you don't prove that you are the legal owners of this land, we will have to kick you all out'.
Minerva insists to her mom that it must be a lie. Mom says gotta make sure. If they are about to be ruined, you will not marry a poor soul. Minerva claims she loves MA. Mama says we love 'billete'.
Lupita insists the land/lot belongs to my dad. Don Chuy insists this is his place (but does he look like he knows better?) Lupita repeats they (MA/Saul) have no right to claim property here. And we will show you. (Lupita's brother tries to put his two cents worth, but he ends up tattling. Lupita sends Don CHuy to go find the proof/title. Lupita keeps pointing finger at MA/Saul 'we will show you'.
Frida and her boyfriend arrive somewhere for a 'protest'? their friends arrive. some kind of demonstration in favor of factory workers, but the posters say something about cattle growers.
Don Chuy comes back downstairs empty-handed. Don Chuy claims he has no time to turn his stuff upside down, you will have to wait until I have time to look for them. Lupita wants them to leave.
MA says he has no time to wait. Lupita continues with her finger, you will not kick my folks out to bring in yours. MA asks 'you think i want this property to bring my family here? i want to sell it!'
Back to the demonstration. Frida is not happy with them all just holding posters and shouting. She wants them all (and convinces them) to go to the door and block the entrance/exit of people there.
Then they get busy destroying a car there.
Back to Menchaca. Still have the family feud repeating each side statement. MA gets a bit more negotiative... MA gives Lupita his business card to call him tomorrow to see what they all can come up with. Lupita reads his card out loud... MA R-... Pa.. lacios? Don Chuy asks MA if he has any relation to A-hole... MA says yes, he is my cousin... (wrong answer!) Instantly Chuy is no longer willing to even talk anymore. Get outahere... Lupita gets upset.
MA and Saul leave in the car (Saul is really nervous) with the male version of the Roquettes (Chuy and his son and two others) seriously staring at them from in front of the fonda building. Saul and MA got so nervous they fell into an uncovered drain hole... MA has to get out of the car to push... but the smoke chokes him... Chuy and the others take over, Chuy tells Saul to not step on the gas but to put the car in Neutro. The four of them instantly get the car out of the hole. MA gets in the car and they finally leave.
At the protest, after they have banged the heck out of the car, Frida gets on the hood and continues shouting but the leader of the demonstration tells her she is not helping them at all, they are there to negotiate, not to cause trouble. Frida's boyfriend says 'i told you that backing up that group of resentful 'n a c o s' won't get you anywhere... Frida repeats what he said as if it was her idea. Seal it with a kiss.
Back in the house, Don Chuy told the girls the story about how scared MA and Saul were. Don Chuy feels pity for them. But his children are not so quick to give the benefit of the doubt.
Debriefing at the other side apartment, MA says if you don't hold those people in their place, they will act even more outraged. Saul notes to MA that the one with the worst social prejudice is him, MA. MA says we will have to find another way to get some cash flow... we won't get that much from that property anyway. Still states he will take care of the problem on his own. What could my family do? go sell gum on the street corner?? MA's phone rings. It is Minerva, checking if he needs anything. MA just says he is with Saul solving some little issues. Thanks for your concern, you have no idea what it means to me that you are supporting me. Bye. Saul impressed how Minerva cares for him. MA says she sounds so concerned, as if she knew of the problem we are dealing with. Saul suggests it is love. And reminds MA that he could have the police looking to arrest him any moment now.
previews: pressure is on, MA still only sees the Menchaca house as the way out.
This is what I got as I watched. I will update it sometime tomorrow.

I think the name El Coliseo de Roma comes because the characters seem to live in the Roma neighbourhood in Mexico City. Also, a popular arena for lucha libre in the same borough where the Roma is situated is called Coliseo, that must be one where Don Chuy used to fight back when he was the Son of Sumatra.
I love Minerva and Isela, they are the right kind of ditzy antagonist that I enjoy in these comedies.
I think MA's predjudices showed this episode. He might be "self made" but he had the kind money needed for the studies and the means to start over legally in another country (in Europe), unlike most people here, so he has received some benefits of his priviledged background which I think is something he fails to appreciate. I think that may be part of the growth of his character once he will witness the kind of struggles that the Menchaca family get to deal with.
By the way, DaVinci is my favorite in this novela. He is adorable!

Thanks so much for this fab recap. Ay, yi, yi is MA in trouble. How much exactly is 30 million pesos? I know it isn't the same as thirty million dollars, as it was in PESE. If their accounts hadn't been frozen they could have paid it back I think. They seem to spend the money like water.
I think Ahole is trying to get in with Minvera, cause of that clause in the will, produce the heir and get the company. At least that is my impression, why else would he be going over there to see if Minerva knew of MA's fraud? Ahole did have a thingy with Minerva back in the day.
I feel bad for the Mechancas. It was kinda funny how those guys were looking for the gym and found it to be the Roman Colosseum. Yes, Marta that color blue is very popular in Italy, but I can see why they used it. The Italian flag colors are very similar to Mexico's flag colors and probably why they didn't use that instead.
I like how AS calls Leo and MA "bambinos" all the time. I like her mix of the Italian in her speech and Leo's Spanglish.
I wonder if Don Chuy even has the deed to that property. It will be interesting to see what happens with that.
Frida's plan backfired terribly. She ended up destroying her own car. Can't wait until she finds out there isn't another.
I think Saul was telling MA to flee the country, but MA didn't want to do that. It would go a long way to prove his "guilt".
Looking forward to Monday to see what happens with the deed and if MA gets arrested.
Jarocha, thanks for filling us inon the Roma neighborhood. It should fit Ana Sofia perfectly.
I also agree about MA's prejudices showing through in this episode with his wariness in the Menchaca barrio and his later talking about how to deal with "those people."
Madelaine, I was wondering myself about how much 30 million pesos were worth and according to the internet this a.m. It is a little more than 2.3 million dollars.
After MA tried to put the situation in "plain language" for the Menchaca family, don Chuy said he was talking like "un Tarzan" like a Tarzan? That was funny.
So Ana Sofia travels with a bottle and even wets the whistle of her little Da Vinci. Hmmm.
Another thing I found funny and telling was Vilma's constant grooming of Alejo. .
Finally, I never expected a mention of my beloved Teletubbies when Leonardo was critiquing the paintings.
This is moving along quite nicely.
Jarifa.
I too wondered about the red car when MA had originally picked a white one. i'm guessing brat sister took it and he either picked up a new one or the family had a few spares. In any event he won't be driiving it for long.
I very much fear that Don Chuy is never going to find those papers and his family will end up as squatters. It should be interesting to see.
I wondered which side of the fence Robert Blandon's character would be on since he seemed to be advising MA and Saul but obviously he has fallen into his usual bad guy persona and is in cahoots with Ahole.
Jarocha thanks for the info about the neighborhoods.
ITA that MA showed some of his family prejudice and bias toward the separate social classes. And I agree that he should not be so snobbish talking about having made his way 'alone'. He did go to school with the family money and enjoyed to some extent the family name status while getting up to where he was until the novela started. So he also needs to be counted among those who need a good shaking of values.
ITA that the car scene was the best moment of the night with JC and AA doing their thing with great chemistry and timing... Loved Don Chuy's faces as he and the neighboorhood guys helped lift the car off the open drain hole.
Also agree that Frida will be regretting having beat up her own car (thinking she would just get a new one). Now she will not have a car, let alone any of what she is used to.
As far as the royal blue building color, I would not mind it, just would consider it way out of place over here, but in colorful neighboorhoods in Mexico, it is right with it, and if I lived there I would love to have such a colorful place to live in. Mexico is the country I would consider living in if I was thinking of retiring overseas. Love the people, the warmth, the colors, the culture, the mariachi music, etc etc... i would feel right at home there for sure.
I kind of had made the teletubbies connection myself since my kids used to watch them all the time...
But i would not discard totally that there is some personal feeling/attraction between Ahole and Mimi. We shall see if Mimi changes her focus from MA to him once MA loses everything and Ahole still is at head of business.
So between MA and Saul, Augie Arana is the brains of the operation? THAT will take some getting used to! Estpecially when he loses his place on the teleprompter and freezes like a deer in the headlights. C'mon, you KNOW it's gotta' happen.
Jarocha, about the Roma (Gypsy) neighborhood - do you see any other items/customs that are stereotypes of the Roma in Mexican culture? Don Chuy's hair and clothing style is so out-of-the-ordinary. What's up with that?
I also like Minerva and Isela. They have great comedic timing and chemistry with each other. I became Isela's fan when she jumped up and started doing the Macarena in a past episode. (Inspired by Leo's alleged eponymous girlfriend.)
I got a little bit of a late start with this show, but I just finished watching this week's episodes and reading all of the recaps and comments. I'm really enjoying it so far!
I think Da Vinci is becoming my favorite as well. I can't wait to see what his next outfit will be.
I wonder why Minerva and her mother think it's a better idea for her to marry MA than Ahole. Ahole has money, he's president of a company, and she's actually attracted to him. Is it because he's too much of a playboy, or does (did) MA just have a lot more going for him?
Rikki
They live in the Tlahuac borough, which makes more sense. I still think the name of their restaurant references their street and the arena for the luchadores though.
Paula:
Don Chuy's clothes are not so uncommon here. He dresses as someone from a poor background in Mexico City. I've seen that hair on many over there on the borough I used to live (Tlalpan). Tlahuac is one of poorest boroughs, I've been there only once by mistake so I don't have much of a perspective on it.
Jarocha
Martz's character was realizing that she was a lesbian so she separated from her husband to decide what to do. In one scene she is watching her wedding tapes and her friend comes over and sees the screen with an hysterical Pankowsky making faces and her friend goes "that's your mother in law? definitely get a divorce".
Jarocha
MA claims he made a name for himself although we assume he had the family financial backing for his studies. THEN he went all on his own, or so he claims.
I doubt Don Chuy, even in his best days as a wrestler, had enough to send Lupita to school on his financial support. More like she TRULY made a career on her own, and when she was betrayed by Ahole she continued improving on who she was as a person, even if she did not have the means to finish a degree if she had to stay home to raise Emi. I know, there is a lot of speculation in my part there.
Abuelo: Until you do anything to EARN the money I pay you, stop making decisions around here and don't do things I don't approve.
MA: That's it! I quit! I'll make my money on my own, without any help from my name or my family's wealth.
Abuelo: In this country, the power of our family name is so strong, it will open opportunities for you. Don't pretend that any success will be independent of the advantages of our family's name.
That's why MA went to London, it seems to me. To prove that he could succeed, in a place where his family's name had no influence.
I mentioned that I love parallels in TN's. Here's a doozie for you:
Consider Jaime Camil's taint of his family name, and the accusations and murmurings he's dealt with all his life ("your daddy bought your career" or at the very least, "your daddy's named opened the doors that enabled your career").
Consider that (the evidence seems to indicate) he plans for this to be the last telenovela he ever does, before he moves his career entirely to the US (where his family name means NOTHING)...
... move to a foreign country, to prove that he can find success without his family's influence... How's that for a parallel???
Funny no one ever understands what Ana Sophy wants when she demands her elixer. I guess that's why she showed up with a flask in this epi.
ITA that MA showed his snobby side this episode. And I also think he'll soon learn from Lupita and her family what it truly means to be "self-made"-- and I bet none of them would dare say they had no help to get where they are. Everyone had help, somewhere along the way, and MA started out from the womb hundreds of paces ahead of most people in the world.
About the cars-- MA chose from a series of available company cars the other day. He can drive whichever car he wants. Of course, I'm sure they will all be confiscated soon. I had to laugh when Frida destroyed her own car, pretending it belong to the company owners she was protesting, and it completely backfired on her. The poor workers protesting think she's a troublemaking criminal; and her rich friends who came with her, think she's crazy. When she finds out there will be no replacement car, she will weep.
The other laugh out loud moment for me, was when Ana Sofia gave Da Vinci a little taste of her elixir when she was done.
Sara, I wondered at Ahole's tie as well!
Barbara
This one sounds like it would be fun to recap...I'm strongly considering it. I'll catch up first.
I hope Jaime Camil works out his issues with this tn. His name and family did open doors for him but he's an undeniable talent--maybe the best of his generation--loved him in La Fea Mas Bella and what I saw of him in Eva I loved too. He's proof that nepotism can work. I've always thought Will Smith's son Jaden can act him under a table...so there's that.
I have to laugh at the notion that MA has somehow managed to evade 30 million pesos in taxes and defraud the company of an additional 60 million pesos during the short time he's been back from Londres. (I think that's what they said in Thursday's episode, which I didn't see till yesterday afternoon.)
Also on Thursday night there was a scene where Ahole (he certainly earns his nickname) went to see Granny and said something to the nurse about paying to keep the old woman over-medicated in hopes she'll lose her mind.
Sara, I didn't notice Alejo's tie at all (I'm usually distracted when I "watch"), but if the knot was complicated, it was probably a double-Windsor.
