Que Pobres Tan Ricos #19-1/30/14 : AS Has a Very Bad Hair Day and Other Follies

Hola Amiguis! This capitulo was a tough one with all the slang and speed. This recap will not be in order and please let me know what I got wrong. I am still learning Y'all as you are : )

JT and Frida are still having their little chat. He even invites her to come hear his band sometime, but I don't think she wants to venture into the neighborhood. He imitates her "fresa speak".

AS is wearing that lovely, er, hideous scarf and Granny Mati hands her a mirror so she can see how loverly she looks, Not! AS is just abhorred! Leo remarks she needs a hat (in English) then says in Spanish it is a sombrero. Lupe serves Granny Mati some chicken soup, ya know they just gently killed that chicken. MA is going to show off his waiter talents he learned in Londres. He is going to serve his family. Lupe tells AS all about the neighborhood hairdresser, ya know, Guendy, but AS doesn't trust anyone from the 'hood to be touching her curly locks.

MA serves his family, that would be AS and Leo, Frida is still off talking to JT. MA serves and says basically here ya go MiLady and MiLord, things he learned in Londres, with a towel over his arm and the tray over the same arm, think Moseley in Downton Abby. Don Chuy thinks that's a hoot. MA even says he will serve Don Chuy and it will be an honor.

The meal is now over and MA is helping Lupe with the dishes, somewhat. MA says he likes to show the excellence in the job he does. He says something about a Fat Duck, in Ingles, you know, you don't know. Lupe ends up hitting him with her towel.

Oh, noes it is our honeymooners in bed, well Mini is and Ahole is going out. Seems Ahole can't get enough of Mini. They do the growly thingy again. Off he goes and she calls her Mama again. She tells Isela having sex with Ahole is a fiasco! Isela is bragging how she is having a great time relieving all the stress she had with the wedding and what not. She's got a green, dare I say, avocado mask on her face. Isela tells Mini to just think of all the bennies she will be getting from Ahole, remember that and things will be good and to suck it up. Mini cries.

Perla and JT have closeted themselves for a bit of a chat. They want to rat out MA. Lupe overhears and tells them to stop, enough already. JT wants MA to sign those deeds and get out already, or he will turn him into the cops. Lupe tells him no way buddy. Don Chuy would have a cow and JT and Perla want to know why all of a sudden Lupe is on MA's side. Lupe uses the Don Chuy can't know and she wants them to promise they won't tell. She doesn't trust them, so she has them show their hands so there is no crossing of fingers, but hey, if you are double jointed you can cross your toes. Just a thought.

MA talks to Frida and tells her that chicken incident was very bad, but they are having a hard time keeping a straight face. He loves Frida and says he is working on getting stuff back the way it was before. He misses his life in Londres, but he misses his bed a whole lot more and many other things. Frida says she loves him too and big hug.

In a restaurant in the middle of a market place in Baja California, Ahole is meeting Adolfo and worrying about that moola. Adolfo tells him they need to find a way to divert it, I think, like maybe the Caymans and then Mini comes to join Ahole. She is introduced to Adolfo and he remarks she is even prettier then her picture, the charmer. Ahole says Adolfo is a friend of the family. He leaves and Ahole is back to "wanting" Mini again, and aphrodisiac is mentioned.

Granny Mati and AS are in their room, the former room of Don Chuy, and the scarf is taken off. Talk about "bed head" it's beyond that. AS is worried she will have to spend the rest of her life in this room. Pobrecita! Not!

AS has finally broken down and has gone to visit Guendy at her salon. Perla is there and whispers something in Guendy's ear. AS says she wants her hair fixed cause her own Mama wouldn't recognize her. Since AS has no lana, Guendy will take payment in sunglasses that AS has. AS protests that she bought these in Barcelona and they cost some pretty heavy Euros. Now it's down to bidness and Guendy asks her what type of service for her hair she wants, like maybe extentions, an afro, tinting or how about the Guendy Special. AS complains she is used to her French hairdresser. The scarf is removed and Guendy and Perla are horrified by what they see.

Diego is up late, listening to his music, when Nepo his Papa comes in. Nepo doesn't want him staying up late, he needs his rest to make it on that Primier Soccer League. He wants the best for his son Diego. Nepo thinks he will excell at soccer. Deigo says he needs a day of rest his muscles are aching. Diego it seems doesn't think soccer is the only thing in life. There are other things Diego would like to do. Keep that thought.

Back at the salon AS is wanting Columbian coffee with some cognac. AS' hair is in rollers. AS tells Guendy she only uses products from the U.S., France and Italia. Guendy says the products from the U.S. she uses in her salon, are just as effective as the ones AS uses. Now it's time to go under the dryer. AS is afraid of it, Perla is left in charge, and no AS doesn't want a magazine.

Saul and MA are in that same Chinese restaurant talking about what MA managed to get out of El Editorial and it doesn't look like anything, except MA notices the numbers in red. MA is sure that Ahole cooked this up and he hopes that Mini enjoying her honeymoon with Ahole and of course he isn't thinking of her at all but the evidence he intends to get.

Back to the salon and now there is smoke coming from under that hair dryer. Guendy and Perla notice and AS is taken out from under there and her hair is completely fried. It's just a hot mess and her hair is coming off her head in clumps. Guendy promises she'll fix her hair, and as AS cries, Guendy tells her there is no hair she can't fix. AS is looking askance at her. Later, we see exactly what Guendy has done. All fixed and I really like AS' new "luke". It's very sleek, natural and down, no more updo. AS is quite pleased and I think Guendy told her it was on the house. I think AS also wants some of that product that Guendy uses at the salon.

AS goes back to the Menchacas and Don Chuy is rhapodizing about her new "luke" and really likes it. Carmelita not so much. Sharky has come by and kisses AS' hand and introduces himself. She doesn't like him at all. She basically ignores him and Sharky hands Leo his card. He sells gold and is a pawnbroker, besides a money lender, I think. Leo thinks that maybe he can sell some of the RP's stuff for them, but AS nixes that and says that their stuff is worth millions de Euros and not chump change which she thinks Sharky would sell the stuff for. After AS and Leo go, Sharky reminds Don Chuy either about the debt or a payment is due.

Back at the restaurant MA is telling the Chinese guy this wasn't what he ordered, I think MA ordered something that wasn't chicken, but he got chicken. They are still discussing getting proof that MA had no part in this fraud. The check comes and there is a mention of 15% which must be the tip? I know in Europe they add 15% to your check and there is no tip required. Maybe that is it. MA wants to get back to his life in Londres and he is sure that if they find Adolfo, its sort of like following the lana, find one find the other. MA round about asks Saul for a loan of I think 200.00 pesos after much hemming and hawing which Saul gives to him. MA thanks him and I think says he will pay him back.

In the VIP shed, as Leo calls it, he is bugging AS about selling some of their stuff for money, as he says this in Ingles. She is not agreeing and look, she's got some hooch that she uses to promptly fill her flask and takes a big swig. While she's doing that Leo jacks a very pretty huge vase and goes.

Leo is now walking in the hood with this huge vase under his arm and talking to Macarena on the phone. He tells her that once he moves some money around or something he'd like to come visit her in her castle in Madrid. That would be fine with her. He hangs up and is promptly mugged by some guy on the street that wants Leo to give up all he has. The guy has a knife to Leo's throat and he's shaking in his dress shoes. He tells the guy he only has the cell phone, nothing else and oooooopppppssssy daisy that very expensive vase drops and shatters. It was worth 10 mil. Here comes Diego out of nowhere and rescues Leo. He chases the thief off. Leo is very grateful introduces himself as an artiste and music entrepeneur I think. Leo thought he was dead. Diego also introduces himself as a soccer player. Leo says he can't reward Diego for saving his life and Diego says he doesn't want payment it was the right thing to do. He suggests that Leo take up some type of defensive class, like say boxing, but it's Leo's hands you see, those delicate hands. Leo is trying to piece that huge vase back together, but it's hopeless. It's in too many pieces, people are stepping on it so it's history and Leo leaves it where it is and Diego just shakes his head.

Blech, another round of Ahole and Mini in la camera doing the bebe making thingy. Mini wants to know why they are doing it so much and Ahole tells her he wants her to have a bebe. Mini doesn't want to, not this soon. She'd like to go to Cabo San Lucas. Ahole in his best threatening manner tells her he wants a bebe y punto! She will provide. End of Capitulo!

Avances:
Don Chuy finds out why MA is really at the Menchacas or does he? Tune in Este Viernes for Marta's very splendid recap. MUST SEE TV!

Comments:
Good Morning Y'all the recap is up. I had so much trouble with the Frida/JT convo. If Y'all know what was said, please comment. Best part of this capitulo was AS' hair disaster. Too funny. Please enjoy the recap ; )

Thank you! Having this info will help when I watch it tonight!

Can't wait to see my girl Guendy with AS!

wonderful recap, Mads!! I was sort of distracted during the episode so I got a few details I missed from your recap.
I loved that Saul offered more money to MA, but the idiot said he only needed 200 pesos. I wonder if that is an exact amount for something, maybe buying Perla a new hairbrush?

My favorite line of your recap was...
...he's shaking in his dress shoes.
my favorite parts of the episode were Diego saving Leo and Leo's attitude of gratefulness (unheard of coming from Leo) and AS's hair disaster at Guendy's place and the nothing-short-of-a-miracle result afterwards.

I liked the fact that Diego told Leo stte of 'here in this neighboorhood we look after each other (each other's wellbeing). we are not like that (that guy)'. That says a lot for Diego and, by association/parenthood, for Nepo.

Madelaine, thanks for the very fine recap! There was so much action going on.

I liked:

The continued flirting between Frida and Jose Tizoc.

MA doing his whole. British table service waiter thing " with excellence" for his family and don Chuy.

Lupe accusing MA of trying to butter up her dad but reminding him once he finds out MA is a fugitive he is gone.

Lupe getting her siblings to swear "with their hands up" that they won't tell that MA is a fugitive.

Minerva talking to her mom on the phone anytime she has a break from Alejo.

Her mom's pragmatic view of sex and all of the wonderful materialistic wonders that will come from her marriage.

Isela's best line was that mattresses were only good for keeping your money in.

Minerva finally not being able to fake it anymore because she was worn out and telling Alejo she wasn't getting pregnant. Alejo having a different opinion.

The whole beauty shop adventure of AS from Guendy's pirated designer sunglasses that were just like AS's to the wonderful smoking hair.

Another Chinese restaurant meeting with MA and Saul and MA's inability to feel indebted to Saul for any amount of money.

AS trying to fill her flask out in the shed.

Leonardo's adventure with the vase and Diego Armando saving him.

Lots of fun.

Jarifa

Jarifa, yes,
...Guendy's pirated designer sunglasses that were just like AS's ... (and AS's face of disbelief)
that was a great moment.

Re: MA and Saul: I probably should have said MA not wanting to feel indebted to Saul for any reason.

Jarifa

Thank you for the recap, Mads.

More evidence that AS is starting to change: she has a new hairdo! A TN character with a new hairdo MUST change her attitude - it's da' rules! And then, as proof, she was genuinely grateful to Guendy after she saw the results. No snark at all.

In contrast, Leo was grateful to Diego at first, but by the end of the conversation he reverted to his class-obsessed grossero self.

Good Morning Y'all and thanks so much for your kind words.

Sara:

This one was such a hoot, especially AS' hair catastrophe it was pure comedy gold.

Marta:

Thanks so much for the missing pieces. I am really liking Diego. I think he ought to be a cop. That saving of Leo's life was so noble and the boy has some avocadoes to chase away someone with a knife.

Jarifa:

Thanks to you for more missing pieces. MA's take as a waiter was really funny and he so reminded me of Mr. Moseley on Downton Abbey the way he held the tray and his stance. Too funny. And the MiLord and Milady.

Marta:

I did hear Guendy say something to AS with the sunglasses. I think she said something like could AS' sunglasses be real, but then I saw what you wrote and I guess Guendy is the one with the knock off sunglasses. That scene was so cute.

Paula:

So true about TN characters. Whenever they get a new "luke" they do change. I will be interested to see what AS does now and how she acts. She is still a bit snobby at this point.

OK... another night, another missed episode. Thanks, Madelaine. I'll catch up this weekend, but at least I won't be confused when I watch tonight!

But I can't wait to see this one. AS pleased with Wendy's hairdressing efforts? (Or with anything??) This, I've got to see.

Poor Carmelita. It must have driven her crazy to see Chuy react to AS's new do when he paid no attention to hers.

And poor Mini. There is no aphrodisiac in the world that will make her feel better about her wifely duty.

Finally, an RP helps out around the house - and with the dishes! (I hate doing dishes.)

I'm also relieved about that phone call to Macarena. I'd hate for such a promising storyline to go cold on us!

So now it sounds as though both Leo and AS have turned a corner, or at least started to. (MA too, after accepting that minuscule loan from Saul.) I'm not expecting a gigantic breakthrough anytime soon, but it's nice to see them floating down a little bit closer to the planet's surface.

Mads, I'm guessing (without the benefit of actually seeing this yet) that AS's change in attitude will mostly be about seeing the Menchacas and their friends as real, decent human beings, rather than annoyances/obstacles/enemies.

I think that's a shocking enough change for her as it is. As to how this actually manifests itself, I can't even guess, but I'm glad that we always have something to look forward to night after night with this TN.

Absolutely hilarious episode. The hair thing was priceless along with the knock off glasses bought in the Metro as opposed to swanky Barcelona. Yep Carmalita definetty didn't like Chuy fawning over La Dama AS. There is a faint glimmer of a turnaround there but it wouldn't be realistic if it happened over night. The same thing hold true for Leo. It's going to be baby steps all the way.

Looks to me like Diego may not be that all thrilled about going to the Premier League and becoming another Chicharito. Looks like Napo for all his parenting skills and kindness is trying to fulfill his own dream via Diego.

So Isela is still acting the pimpess with Min. Gives you some idea of her own marriage. As for Min and Ahole the only good thing about it for Min is that it is over quickly. LOL Didn't Ahole also say something about her being cold? I'm thinking that meeting with Adolfo that she saw will come into play later on.

I'm sort of surprised that MA told Saul about Emiliano being Ahole's son. When Saul mentioned it he had to warn him to say nothing to anybody. I really think that was a serious breech of trust for him to have done so.

Julie:

I so agree with both your comments. I too think it will take AS some time to come to grips with no longer having any type of money and finally finding out the Menchacas are not the bad people she thinks they are. I think you were the one that mentioned this before, but AS would be a huge help in this party planning side line. That would benefit both families. They could work together and maybe split the proceeds.

Deice:

Thanks for the info about MA telling Saul all about Emiliano. I hope Saul keeps it to himself, he has done a lot for MA so far. I am sure though, this will come up in the future.

Thank you, Mads! I agree, the talking was fast and furious and slangy. I usually don't need captions anymore, but I had to turn them back on for this show. Although the captioner doesn't seem to pick up any of the stuff they say in English, and sometimes that's as hard to catch as the Spanish!

It was a very funny episode, though. The hair bit was great. I liked that in the end AS had a sleek new hairdo (and a slight attitude change to go with it). I was afraid they might go the "low-budget hairdresser only knows how to do tacky" but was glad that Guendy really did have the (not entirely believable) skills to give her customer what she wanted, just like the fancy place can do.

It was also funny when AS was going on about how she only uses products from Europe, or maybe los Estado Unidos, and Guendy said she also uses products from los Estados Unidos...de México (which is, of course, the official name of the country of Mexico. It is The United States as much as The United States of America is).

I hope Perla took her brush to the salon and put it in the brush and comb sterilizer to get AS's cooties out of it. MA doesn't really need to buy her a new one.

MA as a waiter was very funny. I loved the paper napkin draped over his arm and the way he over-enunciated "You know? No, you don't know."

Frida and Tizok are cute. It was nice how understanding he was about the chicken thing and how he caught her when she started to faint in the previous episode.

Yeah, I was thinking AS could help with the event planning. She's demanding, rude, and imperious, but she does know how to throw a swell bash together. (On a budget, though? That remains to be seen.)

I also thought MA could be a good restaurant manager.

What about the other two? So far, we've seen that Frida has good language skills and good people skills. Assuming there isn't a huge demand for people who can destroy cars with a tire iron, I would imagine she'd be most helpful tutoring students. I don't remember if JT and/or Perla are still in school, but Emiliano still is, and I bet she could help him.

Leo: It still looks like he should help JT with the band, but it's not clear what skills has. Maybe, instead, he and Diego can help one another find their way. Leo has never really tried to do anything before, so perhaps his true calling will end up being a big surprise to everyone. (Maybe he will join the priesthood. Ha!)

Julia:

Thanks about the product at Wendy's salon. Now I am laughing again. There are good products in all countries. You just need to find it.

Julie:

I like your suggestions of what the RP's should be doing. I laughed the hardest at Leo's future profession. I have to learn not to drink anything when I read your comments : ) Supposedly Leo has some experience DJing I think. I too think he could help out JT's band if he can ever get over his naco phobia ; )

Leo introduced himself to Diego as an artist, musician, and inventor. Inventor? Why hasn't he invented himself a better bed yet? I'd like to see him invent something.

Excellent recap, Mads.

I had a good laugh over AS's hair adventure, as well as her shock that Wendy's knock-off sunglasses were indentical to her own. I'm not even sure if she walked out of there with her original pair, and not Wendy's. Wendy did do a great job on her new "luke", but I felt sad for Carmelita when Chuy fawned over AS, but never even noticed when she got a new "luke" the other day.

I was also shocked that MA so easily spilled the beans about Emiliano's daddy to Saul, while Lupe was threatening her siblings with bodily harm to keep MA's secret.

Could "inventor" be translated as maybe "designer" or "composer"? Either of those would be more plausible for Leo!

(At least in his imagination, I mean.)

Mads thank so much for this recap.

I also enjoyed AS hair ordeal ending w/the new look though I do feel for Carmelita.

I wonder what would prompt MA to tell Saul about Emil unless he was trying to find out something about the clause/?

I feel bad for Carmelita, but I think she needs to accept that Chuy is just not that into her and look elsewhere. Is she related to Nepo, or is he an option? I haven't gotten all these people straightened out yet.

Now that MA has told Saul about Emi being A-hole's son, I wonder if Saul will check the will again and come to a determination on whether A-hole can claim the 'Grandpa clause' fulfilled through Emi being his son if he ends up marrying Guadalupe somehow.

I can't figure out Nepo and Carmelita either - or Wendy. I thought at least one of the women was related to Nepo, but I no longer remember which one or why. Maybe all three of them are related?

Thanks for the nifty recap, Madelaine, well done.

My favorite scene was the beauty shop scene. Very funny and with a very sweet and satisfying ending.

"...she's got some hooch that she uses to promptly fill her flask and takes a big swig."

That scene struck me as so funny. AS had a pint bottle of gin which she carefully poured into her trusty flask and then promptly turned up the flask to take that swig. I guess the polite and sophisticated thing was to take gulps from the flask rather than skipping the step of transferring the booze from the bottle to the flask and just turning up the bottle.

I thought I detected a little chemistry between Diego and Leo. I certainly don't think that Diego is as dedicated to his soccer as his daddy might wish.

I'm getting such a kick out this show.

Carlos

Karen:

I agree with you about MA telling Saul about Emiliano. I think he is going to have Saul check that clause.

Carlos:

I am so glad you are joining us amigo! This show is such a hoot. That hooch scene was also funny and I too think there is some chemistry with Diego and Leo. I'm hoping they become fast friends.

Vivi:

Yes that was interesting wasn't it. About MA telling Saul but Lupe threatening JT and Perla. She still doesnt' know about the Grandfather clause. I wonder what she'd do if she found out about it?

Julie:

It could be translated that way and it makes more sense.

Julia:

Carmelita and Guendy are related. They are Mother and daughter.

I'm watching the episode right now and I love that Silvia Pasquel is so willing to have all this stuff done to her for the sake of comedy.

Madelaine, can you imagine if Lupe finds out about the clause AFTER getting together with MA? She'll assume that he was hiding this from her and seducing her just to be spiteful to Ahole. Ugh. One of my least favorite classic TN misunderstandings!

Carlos - that chemistry you detected between Leo and Diego. Was it just friendly chemistry, or was it something more... you know... extra-special?

It would be such a typical telenovela trope for Lupe and MA to get together and be happy, and then she finds out about the clause and doesn't trust MA, so then they are split up for another 30 or 40 episodes, that it seems very likely. I, for one, would be very happy if the writers decided to zag rather than giving us the expected zig.
