Weekend Discussion: Alpha Males

Much has been said among social anthropologists about the Ideal Female Face, shown here with Jessica Alba as the example:

However, after long observation, I have determined that there is an ideal male facial type that is very prominent among the alpha male types we encounter in entertainment.  It consists of some combination of the following traits:

High forehead with prominent brow
Deep-set eyes
Thin nose (at full face)
High Cheekbones
Decisive Mouth (lips can't be too full)
Strong jawline and chin

Optional:

Square or cleft chin
Vertical dimples
Facial hair (if well-groomed and appropriate to head hair)

Hair and eye color are more subject to personal taste, but due to the scarcity of many alpha male types with red hair I'm willing to bet that most women prefer the other extremes whether blond or dark, whatever better suits the individual man.

Herewith I present a gallery of alpha male faces of gentlemen from different ethnicities.  I have also deliberately chosen a few that resemble each other.

Fabio Lanzoni
There is no mystery why Fabio Lanzoni became so famous as the archtypical hero of romance novels:   He has all those features and a lion's mane (with Leo as his rising sign, that is no coincidence).

Saul Lizaso
George Clooney

Clint Eastwood
Jorge Salinas

Charlton Heston

Sebastian Rulli

John DeSalvo (Fabio's successor)

Mario Cimarro
Having had the pleasure of meeting both Mario and John, I can tell you that they do look sufficiently alike to be brothers.  Mario was floored at this news.

Enjoy.  I won't have time to add more photos now, but there will be a later edition of this study.

WOW, I had no idea! separated at birth!

Really great idea for a weekend topic!
Basically, the male ideal, from what you are saying is Michaelangeo's David.

I think Sebastian Rulli has a better physique than David. ;)

Good candidates all. I am somewhat disappointed that you weren't able to include some African-American alpha male actors. One that comes to mind are Blair Underwood. I still swoon over him.

Curse my computer network at work that blocked almost every image!!!

Anita, you're right. I saw him on stage last year in Streetcar and he still doesn't look his age, either.

Fernando Colunga, can't improve that. It was love at first sight with my 2nd novela, Pasión. You can't leave TBLNOE out of the lineup.
Tall, dark, guapo, strong jawline, sigh. I have always preferred that type over blond, blue-eyed. I like that smouldering, sexy, Latin look.

Good thing we are all different.

Saw Denzel Washington this morning, he is so good looking, as they say "black don't crack".

Variopinta..I am with you...FC is muy guaypo. Have you seen him in Alborada and Amor Real ?

No te preocupes; there will be more galleries like this. It's not hard to identify alpha faces like these. There are also many in classic movies and... in opera, too.

Susanlynn, I think FC is probably the most historically versatile actor Televisa has. He hasn't been in a novela de epoca that didn't look right on him. I wish they'd start producing those again.

UA..What has happened to Carla Estrada ? Has she retired ? I suppose the historical novelas are very expensive to produce. Did you ever see the show they did about the making of Amor Real? it was very interesting. ...the buildings, the costumes, the dances, and all the little details were carefully researched and created. The dance sequence in the opening was beautiful

Amor Real is my favorite. I saw it on DVD which was horribly butchered, but got to see it later on daytime. Also saw Alborada, 2nd best. I think FC got tired of that type of novela, beards, hair, costumes etc.
I recall someone saying Carla Estrada had a problem with Mejia, who wouldn't know quality from his culo.

yuirke

I have no idea what my capcha is doing at the end of that!

Susanlynn--As UA has mentioned a couple of times of yore, historical novelas are expensive to produce and we've probably seen the last of them (unless they take UA's suggestion and do Dark Shadows).

Here's all I've heard second hand on Carla Estrada:

Someone on Caray said she was producing a continuing medical advice PSA of 10 or 15 min. each.

Her latest attempt was to be A la Luz del Angel (2013) Martha Higareda to star. It is based on Kathryn S. Blair's novel, A la Sombra del Ángel, focusing on Antonieta Rivas Mercado's life and the history of Victoria y Manuel. Production was postponed due to the difficulties of retelling Mercado's life with no alterations.

Urban,

Nice pics!

I know that many of you may disagree, but Colunga has never really done it for me. Don't get me wrong, he is attractive, but I don't jump at the chance to watch one of his novelas. I think the last one I saw with him was Soy Tu Duena.

The first time I saw William Levy I was hooked. There is just something about him. Even my husband said that Levy was the best looking guy he had seen, when he first saw him on TV. And when he smiles, it's enough to make you melt.

Of course I like others too. Right now I am really liking Sebastian Rulli. I first saw him on Cuando Me Enamoro, but he had a very small part. I next saw him in Amores Verdaderos and thought he was really cute. But now that I am watching Lo Que La Vida Me Robo I think his look is very sexy. I think its the hair, and the half open shirts he wears because his hair was way shorter on AV, and he wore a lot of suits. I also think his acting on Robo has been spectacular.

Some of my other favs are Cristian De La Fuente, Eduardo Yanez, Mark Thatcher, Juan Soler, and Francisco Gattorno. What I love about all of them is their smiles. They just light up a room and bring a big smile to my face as well.

SR doesn't do it for me. Or WL, either. I'm mostly into darker complexioned guys. Love FC, Jorge Salinas, Juan Solar and, of course, Alejandro Ruiz--my fav (fell in love with Jacinto in MEPS). I'm also liking the actor who plays the Russian in La Reina Del Sur and the red-haired guy who plays the cop, believe-it-or not.

Of the galans posted here, Jorge Salinas and Charlton Heston are my faves. *siiiggghhh*

Thanks for this, UA.

Loved FC's movie, Ladrón que roba a ladrón, he was guapísimo in that.

SR doesn't do it for me, Cristian de la Furente sure does though & I think Wm Levy is adorable.
Then there is Marcelo Córdaba, one must always have a backup telenovio.

Of the Televisa men Jorge Salinas is my favorite. He's so intense and his characters are always in charge and (usually) wanting to put things right.

Sebastian Rulli is also a fave of mine but I like him with serious hair, like he has now. I know he doesn't have the sun in Leo, but the hair is the mane thing.

I don't have a galan I love the most which is strange.
I kind of like everyone.Colunga,Levy,Rulli,Valencia,Camil - all have their charm.

I used to dislike Yanez so badly but then I started watching Amores Verdaderos and now im harboring a huge crush on him as well.Sigh.

I like everyone but when Cimarro stars in a novela I just gotta see it.

I started to really like Rulli he is just incredible ,his acting ,his voice and he is so smexy! By the way ,i have heard rumours are spreading that Salvador Meija will restart the Cuna De Lobos remake he intended to do in 2011 ,i hope this is not true,it is presumed that the stars are William Levy and Sebastian Rulli .Because Meija is a terrible director and is known to ruin novelas i sincerely hope the rumour is not true though i would love seeing WL and SR together if it was an another director!

William Levy does absolutely nothing for me. His lips are too full and I don't think he's a great actor.

I have seen the early episodes of the original Cuna de Lobos and have to say that if anyone tries to remake this it has to have the right cast, the right tone, and it needs to be a novela de epoca. Set it in the 50s or 60s, but not in the 2000's. There are too many plot points that wouldn't work.

Yes Urban ,Cuna De Lobos is not like any novela, the re,ale has to be executed perfectly otherwise it will flop and i can hardly see who would be the new Catalina Creel ,Leticia Calderon,Jaquiline Andere or someone else? It needs to be someone cold, cruel and LC would fit the bill. A telenovela just being based on but not a carbon copy would be fine but to completlely remake it is a tough challenge.

Let's recast that another time. We need a new version of the Remake Games.

Getting back to our topic, I have difficulty believing that Jorge Salinas was the third choice for the lead in Mariana de la Noche. Neither Eduardo Santamarina nor Eduardo Yanez could have given that character the right balance of macho and sensitivity. Nor the undertone of sophistication.

Well, we seem to have gotten off the topic of Alpha male actors into favorite male actors...not that I object, but are ALL our favorite galans ALL A-one Alpha males?

I've been watching Sergio Basanez and Silvia Navarro in Cuando Seas Mia and if you want to take a gander at a REAL Alpha Male in the Fabio Lanzoni mode, take a look--long hair, strong jawline (maybe a little short chinned, but I can overlook that when daydreaming),deep-set eyes and brooding looks--yowzaa. Oddly, his character here, Diego, is the somewhat reticent, sensitive cousin in contrast to his pushy, ambitious, dishonest, mujeriego counterpart, Fabian.

Anita what, that telenovela had 238 capitulos?? That is huge and we thought our novelas are large. How was the telenovela anyway,it must had a lot of fillers.

William Levy and Sebastian Rulli were both in Pasion.

Demetrios--They may have been counting 1/2 hour episodes. Still, 119 is a lot. So far, I haven't been tempted to FF through anything, because the story is still developing.

I could never pick just one, and I see no reason to ever do so, either. :)

When i seen that video my mind was just screaming "OMG This is so hot,its the hottest video ever!"
The fangirls must have been screaming hard, even more then for Justin Byebrair or Becca Dimblack

I've loved Jorge Salinas since I saw him for the first time when I was an eight year old girl. I even remember when he was just the cute chauffer of little Ludwika Paleta in El Abuelo y Yo.

The moment he became my favorite galán was when he starred in Tres Mujeres. I just loved him there and his chemistry with Karyme Lozano was fantastic. My obsession with him back then was really instantaneous, from their first scene together and then he proved himself as a versatile actor with his films (he was in Sexo, Pudor y Lágrimas and later Amores Perros, two of the biggest movie hits here) and he became the galán I have most respect for as an actor.

Sebastián Rulli is gorgeous but it took me a while to really like him. At first he seemed like a pretty face in the first novelas I saw him in, then in Rubí I thought he showed some skills but the character was less than honorable so he wasn't really a galán there but I thought he had gotten better as an actor and I started finding him really hot.

Years later I was absolutely charmed by Rulli in Un Gancho al Corazón. He played the straight man but he also got to do his own share of insanity and nothing is more attractive to me than a galán that can go with the crazy stunts of the comedic novelas and having fun without looking like he is desperately trying to keep his manliness intact (*cough* FC). Dressed as a giant green bug luchador costume, as a clown, as a woman, as a male stripper, imitating a whiny woman, doing exaggerated luchador moves with an obvious dummy, etc, and all through that looking like he was actually having fun was just lovely.

And then Teresa came and I was just gone. Mónica Miguel's directing is fantastic and he really shone there. Also, say whatever you want about Angelique Boyer but her chemistry with Rulli is one of the best in telenovela pairings. I do like them better in Teresa than in LQLVMR though, because I find the Teresa character more palatable than Alejandro but it's interesting to see how one of them has played a character who commits some terrible things to the other in both of their times playing a couple.

By the way, it's nice to see Mark Tacher among the galanes in the promo. Maybe he'll get a lead soon, he is definitely MUCH more deserving than José Ron.

Jarocha

Maybe I'm not "normal" because none of these men except for Cimarro has ever made me pause to watch them. The American men you've chosen are just boring IMHO. Also, there's nothing wrong with a full pair of lips. When I see men with thin lips, it looks like they're losing their and trying to hide it by sucking their lips in their mouths. It also makes me think of apes and monkeys because they have no lips. It drives me crazy. I wonder how they can talk and kiss with no lips. That's why I can't watch that TNT with the chick who played Guzman's sister in Amores. The galan is lioness and I can't look at him. Ok. I'm done with my crazed rant.

Sorry I meant to say that it looks like they are losing their teeth because their upper lip looks way too long when they thin lips.

No Estadounidense is making me swoon right now. Eduardo Yanez is my hands-down favorite, but I'm also crazy for Jorge Salinas and Carlos Ponce. The three look very different (though both Yanez and Salinas are morenos). Yanez has a great smile and a complexion to die for, Jorge can do puppydog eyes like no other and of course those dimples, and Ponce has those twinkles in his eyes. All three can look naughty and nice at the same time.

Aunty Ann, you and have the same taste. Levy has sex appeal and swagger. I also like Fuentes and Yanez. Cyn I'm with you, full succulent lips are a necessity.

Sorry, anon at 7:50 was me Yola

If you like Levy lips, ck out Christian de la Campa, he is in Santa Diabla, muy guapo.

Jarocha, if there were a time machine I'd go back to when JS was in the cast of Solo Para Mujeres. I would have loved to have been in that audience.

Thanks for this topic UA.

I'm like Carolina and feel no reason to pick one galan. I enjoy beautiful men of all types. That video Adriana shared with us was great.

Another good idea for a male stripper is when a woman is starting a new job or moving to a new area. This would be a great way to celebrate with her and have a good time. If she is moving away, it is a good way for friends to get together and have one last night of fun together. Graduating from school or a college is another good excuse to have a male stripper for a woman. male strippergram liverpool
