Qué Pobres, Lunes 3/3/14 (#40): I'll Take "Things That Are Lost" for 300,000 Pesos, Alex
What is "the wind in Ahole's sails"?
What is "Perla's fee for Granny-sitting"?
And the Daily Double... What is "Nepo's will to live"?
Ahole and Vilma find Mini and Isela at the Three Seasons hotel. (Only three seasons? Yeah, I can think of a season I could do without!) Ahole demands to know what his wife and his suegra are doing there; Mini easily convinces him that they heard through friends that AS was back in town, and they wanted to find out if MA was going to beat them at fulfilling Grandfather's clause. Isela even manages to shame Ahole for upsetting his very loyal, honest, truthful, loving, pregnant wife.
But the hotel receptionist informs them that the RPs have already checked out. Frida wasn't with them. AS checked in first, then was joined by Leo, and finally by the Countess Macarena, but they're all gone now.
Later, at home, Ahole apologizes to Mini and Isela for distrusting them, but forbids them to ever go near the RPs again. After he leaves the room, Isela scolds Mini so loudly (in that incredibly echoey big room) that it's a wonder the whole neighborhood can't hear her. Mini pays no attention. She knows now that MA is with Frida, and they're not in the same place as AS and Leo.
Nepo wants to make a big request to Lupita tonight: he thinks it's time they became more intimate. ("More" intimate? If hitting counts, she's more intimate with MA than she is with Nepo!) Guendy offers to let him practice his speech on her. It's another fruit-and-vegetable-themed thing, but he is so intense and sincere that Guendy almost forgets herself. And Nepo almost forgets himself! But they both snap out of it - Nepo more so than Guendy - and get back on task. She tells him he has to be not too intense, but not too distant either... he looks lost.
Frida is at school; MA is on a break at work. She can't remember giving out her phone number or even calling anyone - except when she rented the sound equipment from those guys.
Frida runs into her fellow anarchist/marxist/activist/poseur friends, who are going out for a drink or a movie. She haughtily questions their commitment to their "cause." Ha! They still don't know that she's really on campus to see about getting a scholarship. She tells the advisor yes, her family is very wealthy, but she's trying to stand on her own two feet. The advisor says she's a good candidate for a scholarship except for one thing: her behavior. Some of her teachers have commented on her lack of discipline. In any case, she'll need to bring an adult family member to the campus to vouch for her or something.
So Frida calls MA to tell him about this, but he has other news: Granny is missing. He thinks she may have tried to go back to her and Grandpa's old house, which Ahole sold a while back when he had Mati committed.
Oh, yeah, Granny's missing. Didn't I mention that? Let's back up a bit.
Memories and Forgettories
AS and Leo look at engagement rings for Macarena. (Where is the Countess, anyway? Do you suppose she's finally exchanging her Euros for pesos? Hahahaha...) Leo is getting worried about all the expenses piling up. AS says, "leave that to me." She's already gotten them a table at an exclusive restaurant so that he can close the deal with Mac tonight and then they can be back on Easy Street again.
Perla, the selfless girl who keeps Granny company for the low-low price of 100 pesos per hour, asks Mati about the olden days, the fancy times of black-and-white films and big parties and long dresses and princes and movie stars. Mati remembers how her husband wanted to build a big castle, and he was so generous, he told her... ohhhh... Mati can't remember what he told her. It's right on the tip of her tongue!
Perla helpfully runs off to find some old movie memorabilia to jog Mati's memory. While she's gone, Mati remembers (but does not tell us) and wanders away. She takes a taxi to the old house...
Nepo lets Guendy give him a pedicure. He's totally embarrassed and self-conscious; what if the guys from the neighborhood see him like this? But I guess it would be even worse if Lupita saw his cuticles out of place.
Trofeo treats MA to lunch, or maybe it's a snack, of tlacoyos. MA likes them a lot. (No more yearning for shrimp cocktail.) The woman at the lunch counter is very chatty and very loud. She's always talking about her rotten nephew who never visits. She seems to resent him, but she keeps his photo around and never stops yapping about him. MA sees the photo and thinks he recognizes the face, but can't remember where he's seen him before. "Oh, do you know Don Bambi?" Trofeo asks innocently.
Perla returns to Mati's room with a stack of Pedro Infante stuff, but Mati is gone. Perla panics.
Vilma lets her hair down and shakes it out at Ahole, who never looks at her. She knows AS has no liquid assets and she must be desperate. Ahole muses that MA must be up to something. Vilma leans in to make her move just as Ahole stands up, obliviously, and Vilma flops right over, empty-handed. (Their usual drill.)
Mini is on a mission. I think I hear a seam burst as Isela strains to block her exit. She begs Mini to drop this, but Mini goes to the prepa to find Tato.
Tato offers to play Ashton Kutcher to her Demi Moore. "I don't like to change diapers," she replies. He seems confused by the answer, but to be fair, I think all the blood has drained away from his brain anyhow. She lets Tato know she'll be very, very grateful if can find out where Frida is staying. He's mildly curious as to why she wants to know, but not curious enough to risk offending her.
Guendy wishes Nepo luck as they enter the Coliseum. He nervously pulls Lupita aside to ask his question. He squirms uncomfortably; she asks if he needs to use the bathroom. Before Nepo can get to the point, JT interrupts to ask Nepo to consider a business proposal. Nepo gets him to put it off until tomorrow. He tries again to ask his question, but then Perla interrupts to say that Mati is missing.
MA meets Chuy outside; MA's back hurts. Chuy says, "This kind of work isn't for everyone." MA thinks he can quickly make enough money to put an extra room up on the roof. He thinks it can all be done in a week or so. (Did I get this right? Why does he suddenly want the extra room when he didn't a week ago?)
Carmela, Lupita, Guendy, and even Emiliano are all giving Perla the stink-eye when MA and Chuy come home. Perla is flustered and has a hard time remembering all that happened, but she runs through the conversation and remembers the part about the castle and Mati's husband hoping for... something.
Nepo and Chuy ask around the neighborhood and find out that a woman matching Mati's description was seen in a taxi.
Okay, now MA and Frida have their conversation about Mati being missing and maybe having gone back to the old house, so MA takes a taxi to Grandma's old house... Meanwhile, Tato runs into Frida and wants to take her home!
Guendy confides to Carmela that Nepo is trying to ask Lupita for some you-know-what. Carmela isn't supposed to tell anyone. Don't even waste your time clocking this one.
Emiliano worries about Mati. Feeling left out, Nepo asks whose grandmother she is. JT says she's from Mike's side of the family, but she's sort of like their g'ma too.
Nepo tries again to ask Lupita his big question, but Carmelita interrupts to take Lupita aside. She tells Lupita the big secret that Lupita was about to find out from Nepo anyway. Lupita says she's surprised, but otherwise she hardly reacts at all. Carmelita finds it odd that Lupita isn't showing a little more excitement. "I don't like to meddle," Carmela says, "but if you don't really want him, you should cut him loose now so he doesn't get hurt."
It's getting dark. Lupita and Nepo are alone in the truck, where they can't be interrupted anymore. He finally gets his question out. "We're responsible adults, yadda yadda yadda, what do you say?"
And Lupita says, "No. I'm sorry. The time just isn't right for me."
The Plantain King is plum disappointed; he doesn't like them apples and is berry upset. This isn't peachy at all!
Next time: Ahole proposes to his Auntie Ana; MA "runs into" Mini.

I missed some of this, but did see that scene with Nepo "practicing" with Guendy! They sure do have some smokin' chemistry! I hope they end up together.
I can't wait for your take on this capitulo.
Thanks for the laughs.
I am sure happy that Carmelita gave Lupita a heads up about Nepo. It would be so much better if Lupita told him now she wasn't that interested in him but that wouldn't feed the plot as well since we know MA will be the rival.
Poor Perla as toda la familia was staring at her and shaking their heads. Guess she didn't know how delicate doña Mati's "condition" was.
Sure hope MA finds doña Mati asap. I would hate to see her upset when she cannot find the past at her old home.
Poor Vilma getting all snaky again and striking out again with Alejo.
Minerva and Isela were at their best again.
Jarifa
I was glad Carmelita told Lupita what Nepo was about to propose. I really wish Lupita would have taken the opportunity to cut Nepo loose, instead of keeping him dangling. Carm made a good point. If Nepo doesn't rock her world and make her knees go weak now, he never will. Lupita is never going to want to kiss him passionately, much less do the horizontal mambo with him! So why keep up with the farce?
Loved the developments between Nepo and Gwendy. That spark took them both by surprise.
Mini is getting oh so close to finding MA and his hideout. I appreciate that she wants to actually clear his name, but I think she'd more likely lead Alejo to MA, before she finds any proof that can help MA.
Anyone else watch El Gordo y La Flaca last night? I did not know till I watched the show that Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o was born in Mexico, and that’s why she’s named Lupita after the Virgin of Guadalupe. Her dad was working in Mexico at the time and the family was living there-- she has dual Mexican and Kenyan citizenship, and her parents sent her back to study in Mexico when she was 16 to learn Spanish. It was cool hearing her speak Spanish during her interview. Mexico is claiming her, along with the guys behind Gravity, as THEIR Oscar winners.
Fabulous recap! I too loved that pun filled line at the end ; )
Oh, I hope they find poor Granny. I don't want her to end up at the mercy of Ahole again.
Mini is pretty smart, even though she acts like she's dumb. I can just see her cozying up to Tato. She sure is quick on her feet to give Ahole that explanation. She needs to watch her arguing with Isela so Ahole doesn't overhear. Isela is pretty quick on her feet too, isn't she?
I agree it was good for Carmelita to give Lupe the heads-up on what was coming, but it really should have occurred to Lupita that this subject was going to come up sooner or later. And I'm not sure that Lupita's answer would have been any different.
In fact, if his question had taken her by surprise, it's possible that she'd even have given a more honest reaction, like "What?? EW!" and we'd be all done by now.
So when she finds out that Mini is trying to wiggle her way back into MA's life, will that make her MORE receptive to Nepo? Or will it force her to confront her attraction to MA?
Nepo should have been grateful for all the interruptions of his painfully awkward attempt at...seduction? What was that? I was so cringing. Lupita can barely bring herself to give him a peck on the cheek and he thinks it's time for a homerun?
It was kind of mean of her to play dumb and make him say it when she knew what was coming, though. She should have stepped in before that and said that the noviazgo was a bad idea and she just isn't feeling it.
Nepo was so easy and natural and smokin' hot with Guendy, though! Definitely threw her for a loop.
Not enough Leo in this epi to suit me, and no Mac, but what we did get of him was funny. He does seem to have more sense and conscience than his mother, but she's doing a pretty good job of stifling that part of him.
Frida goes to a heck of a fancy prepa if it has a whole office just for scholarships. I wonder if she'll succeed in getting one without telling the administrator that she really is in financial need.
MA seems to think he'll earn enough money for the VIP shack renovation in a week. Don Chuy seems to think he's in for a shock when he finds out how little unskilled labor earns him. Maybe he can at least buy a couple blankets?
Assuming he's not too sore and stiff to get out of bed (floor) in the morning, do we think he'll wear a necktie to work the next day?
Was anyone else impressed by the way Isela and Mini got Alejo to not only back off, but actually apologize??
And how close did Mati get to actually revealing the million-dollar secret to Perla??
I got confused during the scene with Mati in the taxi. Did she get out of the taxi at the old house? Or did she stay in the cab and tell the driver to take her somewhere else? Or was that not the house at all? Sorry... I was distracted...
Lupe accepted being Nepo's novia after she got ticked off at MA for something. It was stupid then and is has been cruel of her to keep it up. I also thought she was cruel in letting him go through that painful little speech before giving the curt no. However I still like her tons more than I do MA.
The Nepo Guendy scene was hot and it certainly took her by surprise. She was fanning herself like crazy and she actually looked a little jealous when he blundered on. He seems so awkward with these scenes you wonder how he ever got married and had Diego in the first place. I do wish she would lose that grotesque pink eye shadow.
So let me see a little old lady wearing PJ's and slippers, hops in a cab and rides all over the city. If I remember correctly she didn't even bring her ever present purse with her.I too wonder where she thinks she was going and hope the cabbie brings her home soon before Perla takes another load of lecturing and finger pointing.
Hahaha!! Good one!
I hope MA and Frida find Mati quickly. And if she didn't go where they think she went, I hope the cabbie realizes she not only has no money but is also confused, and takes her back to where he found her and tries to find someone who knows where she belongs. The pjs should have been a big clue that something was not right. I mean, I know Candy in Tontas managed to take a taxi with no money and wearing only her skivvies, but I don't think Abuela is providing quite the same show for the driver.
I had noticed in an episode last week that there was a market stall with a sign that said "Pollero El Bambi" and thought that was funny, and now it turns out it IS connected to the Bambi we know and...look at. Did his mother die in a forest fire? Is that why shrill auntie raised him?
I thought Mati did grab her purse before she left her room, but I don't know if she has any money.
Decie - that's what I mean. I get why she accepted Nepo in a moment of weakness; that's easy to understand.
But she could have called it off the next day. It would have been awkward, but simple. It's not as though she's warmed up to the idea of being with him. She's not even trying.
(Oh wait. Maybe she DID hope to break up with him the next day, while it was still a relative secret, but then Guendy ruined it by broadcasting the good news all over the countryside.)
Still, having been forewarned of what he was about to tell her, it would have been the perfect opportunity to break up with him before he opened his mouth. So, for me, this continued "noviazgo" is a mystery because it's no fun for her, is hurting Nepo, is prompting endless comments from Carmelita, and generally not solving anybody's problems. Why is she sticking with it? What is she getting out of this?
I think Bambi's mom was shot by hunters, though. This Bambi likes to play with guns in his house. Maybe it's his way of desensitizing himself to that terrible childhood trauma.
Mati did take her purse though as Julia said I hope the cabbie realizes she can't pay him and takes her back to Lupe's.
Aside from being a plot devise, Lupe and Nepo being together provides him with reason to turn in MA when he realizes she loves Mike.
Ok, who thinks AS will sell MA to Ajelo for more $?
I feel bad for Perla, Doña Mati obviously needs someone with her at all times but I feel that the time frame in between Perla went for her magazines and came back wasn't long at all and Doña Mati has spend that long alone in previous episodes. I can see how she might have thought nothing would happen in those minutes.
I agree that Lupita should just end things with Nepo. I don't think she'll ever feel anything for him more than friendship.
Vivi: I don't get El Gordo y La Flaca but I saw an interview with Lupita Nyong'O in Spanish about a month ago. She said that her father was a teacher at Colmex which is one of the most exclusive universities here, it's only dedicated to Social and Political Sciences. No wonder she's so well spoken and smart.
The president gave a congratulations to the Oscar winners during a speach on Monday and he included Lupita. The news media here also included her in their congratulations yesterday.
Jarocha
I too wonder if AS will sell MA down the river for money. In the previews she had that money hungry glint in her eyes.
Julie:
I think the only reason Lupe is staying with Nepo is because of that loan. I think, she thinks, she owes him that at least, but she'll only go so far I think. Maybe she is having second thoughts about all this now and will find some way of telling Nepo that the "going steady" is over. One can hope ; )
I don't think it's Perla's fault Mati is missing, either. No one realized she needed that level of supervision. The family has left her alone longer than the minute Perla was gone before, many times. Not to mention that no one is watching her all night. She could have wandered away at any time. Absolutely no way should Perla expect any kind of payment, though.
I'm so confused by the layout of the Menchaca home and fonda. I thought the living room was upstairs from the dining room, near that corridor with the windows that overlook the fonda, but then someone got into the sala through the curtain at the back of the kitchen one time. Are there two salas? One downstairs, plus the one upstairs that the bedrooms and bathroom are off of?
As for money/life of ease, doesn't she think she'll be getting that from Macarena? So maybe she'll turn Ahole down for now and then when the Countess turns out to be a no-account who won't whisk her safely away to Spain, she'll change her mind about Ahole's offer, maybe even at a discount.
Jarocha - I agree, it's not as though Perla let a baby play alone with a box of thumbtacks in a deep bathtub full of water. However, her task was pretty simple, AND she expected to get paid for it. But she's giving herself so much grief over it that it does seem like overkill for everyone else to torment her too.
Mads - I hope you're wrong about the money being Lupita's reason for sticking with Nepo. She's not even the person who agreed to the loan! Chuy would feel like a pimp if he thought she felt obligated to Nepo because of the money.
Yes, Julie "Bambi" is not appropriate for children.
My sister and I saw it (in a movie theater) when we were young and when his mother died my sister burst into tears. I was afraid I would be in trouble for making her cry when it was that bad movie that made me upset too :(
There could be two sets of stairs leading up there - one in the dining room, and one off the kitchen. There's also the fact that characters sometimes seem to teleport from one location to another without any indication that time has passed.
Yes, Bambi's mom was shot by hunters AND there was a big fire (probably also set by the hunters, I don't remember). I know kids' entertainment used to be a lot harsher in general than it is now, but even by 1942 standards Bambi would have been in a class by itself.
I didn't see it when I was a kid because my mother was horrified by it as a tot and didn't want to see it again. By the time I was old enough to go to the movies alone, I wasn't interested. As an adult, I finally watched it out of morbid curiosity. It is a brilliant film, but I can see why it scares the hell out of kids.
And it does sort of make you wonder about our gangster's own childhood.
I also really enjoyed watching Nepo and Guendy as she helped him rehearse his proposal to Lupita. That managed to be both awkward and steamy and the actual proposal was awkward and embarrassing.
Watching Vilma's sad but amusing attempt with Alejo was also similar... funny but almost painful to watch.
I think my favorite scene was watching Minnie manipulate Tato:
"He seems confused by the answer, but to be fair, I think all the blood has drained away from his brain anyhow."
Heh heh.
I was also missing Maca last night. Where did they stash her? I hope she sticks around for awhile.
Carlos
I saw Bambi as a kid but I was probably too young because all I remember is that scene where her mother dies. I guess that part did leave an impression on me back then. But then, Disney loved to make me cry, The Fox and the Hound and Dumbo were my favorite films as a little kid and those still make me weepy when I rewatch.
Jarocha
I love Guendy, her sense of style and her white wrist watch. I have one very like it as well. And she also has a princess telephone. I collect them and am always excited to see one.
Thank you Vivi in DC for the El Gordo y La Flaca update about Lupita. Missed it yesterday, but l certainly appreciate the information.
I have to share a funny thing that happened in Spanish class today. The teacher handed out a full page of text in English, we were to read it back to the class in Spanish. One of the women in class looked stunned and said "But this is in English. The teacher replied ", that is exactly the point"
I am getting confused at how they are trying to portray A=hole here. At times he seems to be trying to show off his 'smarts'. And then he seems to have a weak spot for Mini. He will buy anything she sells, even if it makes no sense at all. Not sure I like Mark T playing such a wishy-washy lame villain. But will keep on watching to see if it gets better.
Perla, i agree that she was and wasn't responsible for Mati leaving. But she did brag that she needed to get a salary for watching her, and with that salary comes responsibility.
About Bambi the movie... well, I remember watching scenes from it, but the scenes that I remember the most is Thumper, one of my favorite disney characters ever! (the little blue-gray rabbit).
I would agree that the initial scenes of Bambi's mother getting killed by hunters and the big fire would make that movie not appropriate for very small kids.
Julia, great joke on the Bambi past question! good one!
