Qué Pobres, Weds 3/26/14 (#57): In Which Alejo Is Taunted with Bland Soup

New stuff in RED:

Even though the family jewels were saved, Ahole will never have children. Unfortunately, however, he'll still recover to the point where he'll be able to have a full sex life. (Really? Because it was pathetic before.) The doctor says he'll have to stay in the hospital for two weeks.

When the doctor mistakes Vilma for Ahole's wife, Ahole protests: "As if I would have such bad taste!"

Mini and Isela ask Vilma who shot Ahole. Vilma stammers, says it was an accident, Ahole got mad and needed to defend his honor, and... she is interrupted by a call from Bambi. If we heard/saw any of this call, I must have missed it. Maybe she rejected it.

Ahole tells Mini that he needs to talk to her. However, they are constantly interrupted by Isela and Vilma and Ahole never gets to drop the verbal hammer on Mini.

Mini doesn't want to stay overnight at the hospital with Ahole, but Vilma eagerly volunteers. Ahole insults her and she begins to leave, but then he begs her not to leave him all alone. The next morning, arising from the floor where she slept by his bed, she announces triumphantly, "We slept together!"

MA tells Frida that their mother stole the 300,000 pesos the Menchacas were going to use to finish paying off the house. Frida is impactada. She also says something about the chicken that she had tried to rescue from the Menchacas and which pooped on AS's head, but I didn't catch all of it.

Next day, the police have to investigate the gunshot report. Ahole says he was shot by some guys passing in a car. He's sure the attack was masterminded by MA, and Adolfo was probably an accomplice. Vilma further embellishes the story. It is nothing like what she told Mini and Isela yesterday, and Mini objects vehemently. She tells the detectives that Ahole is heavily sedated because he got shot in the, you know. She even flirts with one of the detectives.

At the market, Nepo asks MA if he has any news about Lupita. MA reiterates that he's not going to spy on her.

Chuy struggles to conceal his jealousy when Carmela reports that last night's date with CK went really well.

At lunch, Saul says most of the stuff on the flash drive was garbage, but there was one interesting file that showed a lot of bank transfers to Adolfo around the time of the "fraud." It's not enough evidence to prove anything, but it's a good first step.

Minerva refers to Vilma as Irma, Dilma, Marina, and Mirna. Even though Ahole is usually rude and dismissive to Vilma, at one point he is sufficiently annoyed by Mini that he makes a point of identifying Vilma by her full name.

Nepo spent a lot of money on a big order of fruit that is overripe and quickly going to ruin. "Like your relationship with Lupita," Trofeo quips. MA suggests using the fruit for aguas frescas and juice. Trofeo mocks him, but Nepo looks like he's considering it.

Nepo offers Diego some money to take a class to prepare for the college entrance exam. "Save your pennies to go out on dates with chicks." "Yeah, um, chicks," Diego replies self-consciously and grabs all of the bills. "Okay, but not that many," Nepo says, taking some of the money back. He needs it to buy more rotten bananas!

The nurse brings Ahole a bland meal, as ordered by his doctor. Mini doesn't want to feed him, but Vilma does. That is, she says she does. But the airplane never quite makes it into the hangar, much to Ahole's dismay. Maybe now he knows how Vilma feels.

Vilma asks Ahole why he doesn't divorce Mini. As his lawyer, she can protect all of his money. But he says he needs Mini till the baby is born. Vilma asks, ever so delicately, if he's considered whether the baby might not be his.

Lupe is excited to have pulled together enough money for a payment towards the family's debt to Nepo. MA starts to say, "I'd like to--" but hesitates for a long time, stalls, and finally says "I'd like to pay you for some of the food we've been eating, yeah, that's what I was going to say!"

Mini calls to try to arrange another meeting with MA. She also warns him that Ajole got shot yesterday and is blaming MA for arranging it.

(Didn't he claim to already be in his car when the shooting occurred? If he was sitting in a car and the shooters were in the other car, how'd they get him in the pants?)

Next time: MA is in even greater demand than ever before. But won't he or Mini ever connect the dots between the gunfire they heard at the love shack, and the bullet hole in Alejo's... pants?

Thanks so much for this fantastic recap.

I too laughed at Vilma trying to feed Ahole that soup. It never made it to his mouth, too funny. Oh, and Vilma brought up that could that bebe maybe not be his? I bet Mini and Isela never planned that out ahead of time. But then again Ahole is that desperate to have an heir and to be President of El Editorial so he may just let that pass. I too wonder how he thinks he can say that MA engineered this. Mini was so funny trying to convince the cops this was an "accident" too funny.

I love Lupe and MA together. They are so cute, and the que's and nadia's too funny. I like the stolen kisses the best.

I liked MA's idea of using that fruit for juices and stuff and glad that Nepo is thinking about that. It would save him having to throw it all out in the trash.

Ruh, Roh, we have the constant rant from Mini now about MA es Mio!!!!! I also liked when she called herself a goddess, Islea brought her down to earth.

I was hoping there would be more movement on the fraud front. I guess it will be awhile before we get that.

I really thought MA was going to confess about who stole the Menchaca lana, but he chickened out in the end. I'm glad he is paying Lupe for the meals they eat.

Poor Diego, we just know where all that lana is going to end up, in Leo's hot hands.

I think Ahole should be more worried that the baby won't be a boy. (Of course, if the "pregnancy" goes far enough, surely Mini will present him with a boy, but Ahole doesn't know that.)

The Abuelo Clause said the baby has to be a varon. Unless there's a special law in Mexico that says "varon" in a will can no longer apply exclusively to boys, there's a 51% chance that this baby will not fill the bill.

I added more to the recap. Still didn't capture all the funny little things, like the detective reaching for his groin in sympathy, but all the important stuff is there now.

Julie, thanks for the wonderful recap. I don't think anyone could include all of the funny stuff from last night unless they were going to write the script verbatim. It just was too much and all of it was good.

For me Minerva, Isela and Vilma stole the show. It was non-stop comedy.

My favorite Isela, Vilma and Minerva moments were:

Isela: greeting Alejo in rhyme with:

"Yerno querido, yerno adorado;no sabes cómo me parte el alma verte postrado" (beloved son-in-law, adored son-in-law, you don't know how I suffer seeing you weakened lying there) Spanish does say it so much better, no? Isela is a walking greeting card!

Vilma: telling Alejo for the umpteenth time that he can count on her and then starting to recite the wedding vows with the wedding music. They so deserve each other.

Minerva: lamenting the fact that she isn't a widow because she is enjoying sleeping alone in the bed so much.

Minerva and Isela: snickering when the doctor is talking about the delicate and sensitive nature of Alejo's injury.

I like how Frida put it all together when MA told her about AS taking the money and the Menchaca's debt being effectively paid. Frida said something like they would ring their necks like the poor chicken and then said that the Menchacas could run them out of there. After that they had the funny bit about blaming your mother, no, your mother, no, your mother.

Poor Diego! Poor MA now being accused of shooting Alejo!

Julie, you asked the perfect question about the shooting.

THANK YOU Jarifa for explaining what Frida said about the chicken.

Isela, Vilma, and Mini could have their own show. They should do a telenovela together. As the stars, I mean.

I was thinking the other night, but forgot to mention, that Ingrid Martz is one of the very few people I've seen actually upstage Jaime Camil.

Julie, ITA agree. Ingrid Martz did such a good job as the obnoxious Doris in CI but I think her real gift is being shown here in a comedy.

Jarifa

Thanks for another nifty recap, Julie. So entertaining and what a great opening:

"...however, he'll still recover to the point where he'll be able to have a full sex life. (Really? Because it was pathetic before.)"

What a funny enjoyable episode.

"Isela, Vilma, and Mini could have their own show."

and:

"Ingrid Martz is one of the very few people I've seen actually upstage Jaime Camil."

I agree.

I thought that MA's suggestion for the use of the aging fruit was a very good one.

Carlos

emeraldrose,

I saw that you made a late comment last night. I'm so glad that you are enjoying this with us.

Carlos

Julie, I really enjoyed this recap.
I agree that Vilma, Isela, and Minerva could have their own show. I was a little put off by Isela in the beginning, but now she's one of my favorites.
Agree that Ingrid M. did indeed upstage Jaimie.
Again, the entire cast is well balanced and each one holds their own.
Great pre-bedtime laugh therapy!

Thanks, Julie! Haven't seen it, but after reading the recap I'm looking forward to it. What fun.

The doctor's comment about Ahole's ability to perform sounds like the old joke where the patient asks the doctor if he'll be able to play piano when he recovers, and the doctor says yes, and he's like, "Awesome! I never could play before!"

I understand why MA is reluctant to tell Lupita about the stolen money, but he really needs to do it. Waiting is only going to make things worse. Which of course is DRAMA, so he can't tell her too soon.

If there are actually detectives on this case, I hope they figure out from the wound that there's no way the shot was fired from a distance by someone in a car. Then I hope they check Ahole for gunpowder residue. Or maybe hapless Beto will tell them what really happened.

Mini and Isela could also tell the detectives about the story that Vilma half-told them before Bambi called. It doesn't overlap in any way with Ahole's version.

In the scene with the detectives, Vilma kept trying to speak for Ahole, but he wouldn't let her. You know, his LAWYER. His smarter half. Talking about an alleged crime. But noooOOOooo, Ahole had to do it his way, ignoring Vilma's advice, and again he's going to be sorry.

There are plenty of things you can do with "mature" fruit just before it spoils, and they're all yummy. It's just that Nepo probably doesn't think of fruit that way. For him, it's a product, not an ingredient. But whatever he ends up doing, he'll have to find a way to do it in bulk, and fast!

Yes, there's tons you can do with fruit like that, but you need to do it fast and have access to a facility to process it. Dry it or puree it and then dry it into fruit leather, for example. Or make it into gelato and freeze. But then you need a freezer to store it. Juicing is probably the easiest, but if you can't sell it all right away, you need to be able to bottle it so that it is preserved.

Or he could try to discount it to sell fast for people to do those things with it at home.

Hey, Lupita has a kitchen. Maybe she and Carmelita would be willing to do some fruit processing for a fee. MA could help.

Julie thanks so much for your recap. Vilma, Alejo and that soup were funny.

Yes the ladies, Mini, Isela, and Vilma, should have their own show. They are hilarious. Unfortunately I was not able to appreciate Ingrid's comedic turn in CI but she's such a revelation here. Has she done a comedy tn before?

How about banana bread, banana pudding (a personal favorite), fritters, muffins, ciders, empanadas, salsas, preserves, jams, jellies... I'm making myself hungry here...

Carlos

Thanks for the recap!
this truly was a very funny episode.
My favorites parts were Isela reciting the poem for Alejo.

Vilma (NOT) feeding Alejo his soup.

Alejo's face when Isela asked the doctor if he will be able to 'function'like before.

I was thinking Nepo could make a deal with someone else at the market - maybe someone who makes smoothies or baked items.

Bambi's aunt likes to keep a pitcher of tepache around, and she might also be interested in other types of fruit that ars ready to start fermenting...

Oh, speaking of Bambi's aunt and the tepache...I was so completely horrified when she set the pitcher down right on the counter where she was working with the raw chicken...and then picked up a glass with her chicken hands and poured some and gave it to MA...raw chicken! Right there! Germs germs germs! Uck.

MA seemed to think the tepache was very strong. Perhaps it kills germs!

One would hope...or maybe that's how he got that "flu".
