Qué Pobres, Martes 6/24/14 (#121): Fresh Starts and Rotten Bananas

Tonight, several of our characters face new beginnings: new careers, new opportunities, and even a new child.

Meanwhile, Nepo and Alejo continue to fester.

MA faces certain death at the hands of Alejo's hired thugs, but Bambi personally halts the hit and tells them that MA is under his protection. The thugs flee.

Bambi says he's doing this in gratitude for MA helping him escape from the police (even though he was caught soon afterward) and for helping out his auntie Queta. Bambi is ashamed of all the trouble he gave Queta when he was young. He gets misty thinking about it, but refuses to cry on MA's shoulder.

MA asks Bambi to testify that MA was never involved in the money-laundering. Bambi begins to sob about his aunt and tells MA he doesn't want to be a stool pigeon. MA says he has nothing to offer Bambi in return for his testimony. This cheers Bambi up, and he has a hearty laugh before ordering his thugs to escort MA safely to his cell.

Saul is alarmed to hear of MA's brush with death and wants to demand better supervision from the guards. MA says Bambi is way more powerful than any of those guys! As for Mini's desire to negotiate with MA, he'd rather take his chances with Bambi!

At the office, Ahole is angry that MA didn't get wacked and blames Vilma for not knowing that Bambi was in the same prison as MA.

At the fonda, Tomás tells Lupe she can visit MA in prison tomorrow. Chido! She goes up to the penthouse to ask if AS has a message for him. No, she sure doesn't. AS has been whining to the kids about how she envies Mati for getting to stay at the nice house. Frida is worried about going back to school tomorrow, and Leo is excited about beginning his teaching career.

Later, Bambi's in a great mood because Valeria, his treacherous girlfriend, is pregnant. Sure, she turned him in to the police and fled to Spain with all of his money, but that's because she just loves to screw him in every sense of the word. (Bambi doesn't know that she screwed him in another way by screwing around with Saul... for all Bambi knows, this baby might not even be his.)

Anyway, impending fatherhood was made Bambi a new man. He orders his flunkies to get some beer so they can have a party. He's going to turn his life around. He'll even testify for MA, gratis - but he urges MA to get his lawyers to work it out fast. (I guess Bambi is aware that he tends to be a bit moody and might change his mind again soon.)

MA's cellmates are surprised but pleased that MA is getting so much help from Bambi without giving anything in return.

Agent Pedro Chavez (not Barney Miller as I previously thought) visits Ahole's house to question Mati. The nurse says she absolutely can't let him see Mati if Ahole isn't there. She calls Ahole, who hurries home to take care of it. He tells the nurse to wake Mati gently so as not to startle her and make her sicker, hint hint.

Ahole tells Chavez his Grandma is sick with stress over MA. Chavez says she was in a nursing home before the fraud too, right? Ahole says yeah, she was real bad, totally senile, but she's doing much better here at home with a special Swiss treatment (he doesn't mention that it's "Swiss" in the sense that the nurse is poking her full of holes with her Needle of Many Naps).

The nurse comes back and says she had such a hard time getting Mati to sleep before that she can't bear to rouse her now. The agent says that's fine. He'll come back tomorrow - and bring a doctor with him.

After Chavez leaves, Ahole tells the nurse that if she lets him in again he'll fire her.

At the fonda, AS makes some more unsolicited suggestions about the food (something about seasoning the rice), which offends Carmelita but intrigues Lupe. It turns out that AS has taken some serious courses on international cuisine. Lupe asks if AS would like to help out with the food for the restaurant. It'll give her something to do.

Carmelita gets angrier and taunts AS that Sharky her "boyfriend" came to visit (Chuy sent him away). AS denies being the loan shark's girlfriend just because she took a ride with him in the Hummmmer. Lupe calms them down. AS still won't agree to *gulp* "work" yet, but Lupe says the offer will be open.

Tizoc is sent to fetch Perla from her room. She's needed in the kitchen, but now that she's a Top Model, she doesn't want to get her hands dirty. Tizoc brags that he'll be big soon too. Perla shows him a magazine photo of his ex-band, who have beaten Tizoc in his rise to success. It's all because Pelambres had a relative in the business, Tizoc grumbles. Perla reminds him that they have such a relative now, too, and she's got Ahole wrapped around her little finger! And if Tizoc will wash his stinky bod and put on some decent clothes, she'll hook him up with Ahole!

MA tells Saul about the deal with Bambi and the baby. He mentions that Bambi's girlfriend is a journalist, but neither he nor Saul realizes that she's the one Saul had a fling with... Anyway, Saul will get the ball rolling on Bambi's testimony, and he also informs MA that Lupe will be visiting him tomorrow. MA excitedly takes the plastic cap-ring from the neck of his water bottle. (MA mentioned to Saul before that even the worst fast-food Saul brings him from the "outside" - I am thinking it's probably Subway, ha-ha - is better than the best food they have in prison.)

Leo and Diego go to a cybercafe to prepare some materials for his art class. Leo is really getting into it. He also teaches Diego about Twitter (apparently, it's #followfriday). A woman has been glaring at them and finally leaves, letting her big purse smack Leo in the head on her way out. The realize that she disapproves of their relationship, even if they themselves aren't completely sure what their relationship is... but they agree that whatever it is, they like it!

Perla and Tizoc are at Ahole's office. Perla wants to meet alone with Ahole first. Aholes credit for giving her the cover and struggles not to grope her when she hugs him in thanks. She wants to be a big star like Gisele (she's popular around here because of Tom Brady, else I wouldn't know who she was!).

Perla asks Ahole to turn his back for a moment. Now that she can't see his face, she asks if she isn't to be paid for doing the cover. He hems and haws, most girls never get to do a magazine cover... she says she needs the money to help out with the family debt. He wants to hear all about this!

In the hallway, Tizoc meets Famous Singer Bobby Pulido and gets his autograph and whistles a lot.

Ahole says he'll pay Perla a modest but fair sum. She brings in Tizoc. Ahole feigns vagueness: didn't Tizoc have a band or something? Tizoc says h's solo now, and asks Ahole to be his patron. (Tizoc gives Ahole a friendly but enthusiastic slap on the arm.)

Leo plans to teach his class all about the art of the world, but his students are specifically interested in the art of Mexico, which is clearly not Leo's strong suit - he tries to wing it, but he's all confused about Frieda Kahlo and DIego Rivera, etc. He backpedals quickly, but realizes he's going to have to do more research.

Lupita has a payment for Nepo, but doesn't want to see him, so she asks Gwendy to bring him the money. Gwendy hesitates because of the fight she had with him about Diego, but Lupe tells her to fight for her love... so Gwendy, who's admitted to Lupe that she feels sorry for Nepo even though he's being a dope, takes the money to the market and ends up fighting with Nepo about Diego again.

Lupe goes to the prison for her visit. They search her for contraband and inspect the food she brought for MA. The guard warns her and MA there's no snogging allowed. MA apologizes to Lupita for having to listen to Mini's nonsense; Lupe brushes it off. (I wish every TN heroine had her attitude.)

MA tells Lupita about Bambi's help. She asks him what he intends to do once he's free. He jokes that he'l take her back to his old apartment in London, of course. No, he's kidding. He gestures for her to meet him underneath the table. (The guards won't let them hug standing up, but he'll let them hide under the table?) He gives her the plastic water-bottle ring and asks her to marry her. She accepts.

Wait till Nepo gets a look at that ring!

Next Time: Perla tells Alejo about the ring! NOW Alejo's willing to take a meeting with Nepo... to plot MA's ruin!

I can't wait to get your take on this epi. I will wait to comment til the morning. Can I just say I am really, really liking Luis Gatica in this comedy. I've only ever seen him in dramas but his character Don Bambi is a riot!

Looking forward to your recap, Julie.

I really liked Bambi coming forward to help MA. Loved the engagement ring MA made for Lupita from the plastic bottle ring.

I cannot like Mati's situation, with the forces of evil dominating her and no help to fight back.

So annoyed with Perla and her willingness to spill all the Menchaca's family bidness to Alejo. Just putting tools in his slimy hands!

Enjoyed the sparring between Carmelita and AS, tired of AS superior mindset.

Had to laugh at Leo's quick retrieval on his errors during his class on Mexican art.

Oh dear. I'm running late. I'd better type fast...

DONE!! But late to work. :(

Swiss treatment , full of holes: you have me laughing even before I have watched this episode. Thanks, Julie!

Jarifa

I agree with that line, Julie!
...a special Swiss treatment (he doesn't mention that it's "Swiss" in the sense that the nurse is poking her full of holes with her Needle of Many Naps).
as much as we feel angry for Mati's situation, you found the right line to make it all so funny.

And also, the 'seasoning' AS was suggesting for the rice was curry, I believe. She said to make it tastier... which totally ranted Carm.

So Perla is our weak link... and what in the heck is Tizoc thinking to go to Lupe's arch enemy for a 'kick up a notch'? Is he that much of a sell-out??

And you all are so right, Luis Gatica is a riot at comedy!

Luis Gatica was Hipolito in Amor Bravio right?

yes, he was also in La Mentira and Corazon Salvaje '09, that's where i saw him last.

Funny:

Isela barking at Alejo and he calling her and Minerva "zopilotas". (Vultures).

MA telling Bambi "acércate a mi calor." MA talking with his mouth stuffed to Saúl while eating his torta. MA with his goofy grin giggling he is so excited to be proposing to Lupita.

Carmelita harassing AS with tales of her dating don Salomon.

Leonardo's students knowing more about Mexican art than he does.

Tizoc seeing the girls who work at Alejo's office and reacting. "Tanta carne y yo a dieta" (So much meat and me on a diet)

Not Funny:

Agent Chavez being denied access to doña Mati. At least he seems to be on to something by insisting on coming back tomorrow.

Nepo

The whole Perla-Alejo mess and now we can add Tizoc to that misguided venture.

Good news:

Diego coming up with a job for himself: coach for a youth soccer team in La Nopalera.

Jarifa

Agent Chavez is way smarter than A-hole gives him credit for. He said I will come back tomorrow with a doctor (who will determine if the meds she is getting are correct/appropriate)... Again, showing he is building a trust relationship with MA and Lupe... if enough people are pointing him to pay attention to Mati, that is what he will do... besides, he can see that A-hole is snobbish and constantly is trying to tell him what to do or limiting his access, so I don't blame Chavez.

Too bad --Carmelita was so defensive about AS's ( I always laugh when I type that possessive. : ). ) suggestion to put a little curry powder in the rice dish. Lupita was interested and maybe AS might have other ideas that could add a little variety at the fonda. Also, it would improve the relationship between Lupita and her future mother in law.

Jarifa

Thanks Julie! I hope you weren't too late to work because you took the time to whip us up such a great recap.

Jarifa- Perfect high points and low points. I can't believe Perla and Tizoc are being such idiots. The way they gave the RPs living in their house such a hard time and treated them with suspicion for so long, you'd think they'd be more wary of the RP who broke their sister's heart and who they have been told is ruthless. They both need one of Lupe's slaps upside the head.

Lupe and MA are adorable. I really like this couple. It's such a sweet, and refreshingly PG relationship. This show really should have been in a family timeslot.

Jarifa- I will only be supportive of AS bringing her ideas to the fonda's menu IF she actually does hands-on work herself. None of this ordering Carmelita about like she's her servant/personal cook. I would bristle at that too, if I were Carm.

I was only 20 minutes late, which wasn't too bad, but I skipped brushing my teeth. Ew!

Yeah, I like how Chavez is doing this. He's doing it totally by the book and no one will be able to challenge any of his methods or conclusions. Dinorah isn't supposed to let him in ever again, so it will be interesting to see how/if Chavez gets access to Mati.

I suppose Dinorah has to go out once in a while, and as people have already mentioned, Isela is the logical person to help Mati because she knows that Ahole would do the same thing to her if it suited him.

Vivi, Lupe's suggestion was for AS to "help in the kitchen," I think, which definitely implies getting onion on her hands even if it ALSO means helping with menu/recipe ideas.

If it had just been menu/recipe ideas, I'm sure AS would have jumped right on it because then all she'd have to do is talk and criticize, and she's already doing that without being asked. :-)

I liked how Lupe said something like "it'd be something for you to do" but then cut herself off because she didn't want AS to realize that they're trying to keep her occupied and out of mischief and bottles.

Forgot to mention another most favorite moment: MA, excited to hear from Saul that Lupita will visit him. He can't get up and do his happy dance, so he does it with his fingers on the table. MA is just sweet with his feelings for Lupe.

La Paloma- Yeah. That was adorable.

I'll say, in Tizoc's defense, that it was one thing to get kicked out of his own band, but now he's actually seeing them in a magazine. That's got to hurt.

Granted, it's his own fault they kicked him out, and I suppose it will be a long while before he figures that out for himself - but right now he's really seething over it.

The question is, how much can he really do for Ahole? Perla already told him about the family's debts and I'm sure there are more secrets for her to tell; but I don't know what Tizoc can add to that, unless Ahole is going to try to get him to commit a serious crime or something, and I'd like to think Tizoc would balk at that no matter what the stakes.

Julie:

Thanks so much for this awesome recap!

So now we have a name for Top Cop, I am so glad we do! I am liking his insistence on seeing Dona Mati, and he was very suspicious by both Dinora and Ahole's "stories". I hope he comes back with a warrant to see Dona Mati.

Again Vilma looked sick when Ahole got that call from the prison and sighed with relief that MA wasn't killed. She needs a brain already, and needs to do something against Ahole.

I did love that scene with Lupe and MA and that little plastic ring, so cute these two are.

Bambi was too funny too. I'm glad he feels remorseful for what he did to Dona Queta. I wonder what she is doing now? Bambi and MA were so funny too.

Ayi Leo didn't do enough research. His lecture was funny and I liked the "students" correcting him. I hope he gets it together. He has such enthusiasm for his new job. I can't wait to see Diego doing his new job.

Thanks again Julie, for doing this awesome recap and I'm sorry you were late to work.

Mads, the money MA had given to Queta was bus fare for her to go to her home town - so I assume she's with family, and not sleeping on a park bench.

I bet she misses her chicken stand at the market, though.

Yes, I agree, the MA happy finger dance and the final scene were SOOOOOO adorable...
I also agree that it is ok for AS to suggest enhancements to the menu at the Fonda so long as she does not try to act like she knows it all and undermines them... she needs to get her hands to work too, AND she needs to treat Lupe and Carm with the respect they deserve. Be a teammate rather than impose.

Can you just see AS in the kitchen perhaps preparing something? That would be priceless!

Julie:

Thanks about Dona Queta. I too bet she misses her little chicken stand. Maybe she opened a new one where she is now, and I'm so glad she isn't sleeping on a park bench.

AS did try to cook something once before, that time when the Menchacas went to Chalma and Carmelita refused to babysit the RPs. I was surprised as anything when she grabbed a pan and thought it was just a one-time joke. I had NO idea that I was seeing the first hint of AS's (possible) future occupation.

Especially since she nearly burned the house down. So maybe we don't let her near the stove right away. :-) She can still chop and measure things and mix them, though. Or be a bartender. ;-)

I do think, though, that convincing AS to work in the kitchen will be much easier than convincing Carmelita to put up with her!

Julie:

Very true about AS cooking something once before and almost burning the Fonda down. She was ten sheets to the wind when she did that. I too think she'd be a great chef, but Carmelita as her sou chef, I can't see it either, lol. Can you see the both of them in the kitchen with chef's knives, perish the thought! I can't even think of a sou chef for AS. Oh, I know Don Sharkey, now wouldn't that be a hoot!

Ana So-fina certainly has enough ego to be a chef. As to the cooking skills, I'll believe it when I see it. As ridiculous as it is for her to envy Mati's gilded cage, she probably *would* be perfectly happy to be kept in Ahole's house and tranquilized all the time. That's basically what she aims for anyway.

Didn't see this episode last night, but I saw it when I was in Panama at the end of April and I remember thinking Leo's teaching was really funny and being appalled by the rude woman at the computer place.

I haven't completely lost hope for Vile-ma's redemption, but she is going downhill very fast. Stealing money is one thing, and bad enough, but how is she still sticking by Ahole when she sees how murderous and abusive he is?

Thanks, Julie. Great title, and I loved the joke about the Swiss treatment also.

The rude woman at the computer place made me nervous because I thought her first scowl occurred just as they were talking about Leo's exaggerated qualifications. I thought she was going to tattle on him and he'd lose his job before his very first class.

It wasn't until Diego (or Leo) said "I guess she doesn't approve of our relationship" that I realized that that was what her problem was. But I still have no idea how she knew. I didn't think Diego and Leo were indiscreet in any way.

I didn't understand how they thought she knew they were gay, either. It didn't seem obvious while they were using the computer. They could have been slightly affectionate platonic buddies, for all she knew. When I was watching it, I thought maybe she was annoyed at them for talking and making noise while she was trying to concentrate on whatever she was doing on her computer. But with their comments, I guess we were supposed to interpret it as homophobia.

Julie, thanks for the recap and also being late for the greater good (though I'm not sure the boss would see it that way!). Add me to the growing list that laughed at the clever Swiss hole treatment and Needle of Many Naps.

I thought at first the woman in the cybercafe was upset when Leo talked about being a "poser". I thought maybe she was from the cultural center and would get Leo fired before he started. When I realized it was about being gay, I wondered what Leo and Diego did to give her such good gaydar and I was also surprised that someone so young would be so homophobic.

Julie, I'm with you in thinking it's great that Lupe can just brush off Mini's crap. She just considers the source and keeps her mind on what's important....helping and supporting the people she loves.

I hope somehow Nepo does SOMETHING good enough to make me think that he can begin to deserve to be with Guendy.

Barbara

Gosh, Jiulie and Julia--just posted my comment and saw your comments! I'll take this as a case of great minds think alike!

Barbara

I really love that we have a heroine who is sensible and doesn't fall for every lie she is told! Also, she doesn't cry all the time! It's fantastic.

Thank you for the recap Julie!

I also liked the scenes with Bambi and MA and Leo trying to teach a class that knows more than him about the subject.

By the way, wasn't Leo the one who burned the Menchaca kitchen?

Jarocha

Jarocha,

From what I remember, it was Leonardo who started the fire.

Jarifa

I think you're right; I think it was Leo. Although AS was right there and did nothing to prevent it or to extinguish it, so I think she's equally not to be trusted with the stove. Was it Leo who threw alcohol on the fire to try to put it out?

Oh dear, I guess I misremembered. Well, it was AS's idea to cook something, I think.

I would guess that AS was the one to try to douse it with alcohol mainly because she always has a drink in her hand, but I think she is actually smart enough to know better. Frida and Leo, however, are not.
