Que Pobres Tan Ricos #113: 6/12/14: Acapulco Here We Come!

Hola Amiguis! We had a better epi this evening. So sit back, relax and while you are reading this recap, I found a perfect little earworm for this epi, cause I took one look at that microbus and couldn't help myself. Here is the earworm, Sausalito

Ana Chofi is praying to the Santa Madonna (Virgincita) and to Dios about Leo, how he is acting like a child. Ana Chofi surprises him and lets Leo know it isn't a crime to be gay, what is a crime is the guy he is interested in, that futbolista from the barrio! Leo can't understand why Ana Chofi always has to be so dramatic.

Don Chuy has revived, Carm and Tizoc are there, and he feels okay. Lupe insists he needs to go to the Doc to be checked out. Over his protestations they take him to the hospital.

Ana Chofi says she knew about Leo's orientation a long time ago. Ana Chofi tells him that a Mother knows when a child is born what they are. She isn't bothered by Leo being gay, but don't mention DA's name. Why then was Ana Chofi okay with his marrying Maca, besides the obvio reason? She also mentions some guy named Inaki that Leo could possibly hook up with, but Inaki is married to a woman, so not gay. Leo thanks Ana Chofi for understanding.

The familia waits at the hospital while Don C gets checked out.

Isela is yukking it up with Mini on the phone. Mini is distressed that MA left her high and dry. She didn't get to er, um, have his body, caress him yadda, yadda. Isela tells her to focus on this divorce from Ahole and to essentially get every thing she can from Ahole.

Don C is done being examined and is just fine. His only problem is that he is under a lot of stress, and is given a prescription for some rest. Don C just knew he was fine, he's the Hijo de Sumatra after all. Lupe says lets go on a vacay, she has some emergency money set aside.

Vilma searches an office, it might be Mini's, after hours looking for her laptop when she is caught by armed security, who scares the wits out of her. She has to leave. She shoos herself out.

The prescription for Don C is the beach at Acapulco. Lupe will organize and the whole familia will help.

Tomas and his buds are hanging out in La Nopalera when they notice the police patrols going by. Tomas knows exactly who they are looking for and is very worried.

Nepo comes by the Fonda and Don C asks him if he came by to beg their pardon after his crap from yesterday. Nepo has come to talk to Ana Chofi, but Don C will not allow that. Don C doesn't want Nepo intimidating Ana Chofi or any RP or Menchaca, no more scandal! Perla comes in amidst this little chat, she has no idea what happened between Nepo and Diego and Lupe mentions Don C's health crisis earlier. Perla lets out they are going to Acapulco and gets dirty looks from Don C and Lupe. Dona Mati and Leo hear all.

Leo thinks that Nepo is out to kill him. He practically begs Ana Chofi to help him when Frida comes in. She has no idea what happened either. Dona Mati suggests they talk to the Menchaca and see if they can't go along to Acapulco. Leo thinks it's a great idea, since Nepo is a homophobic with criminal tendencies and they'll be out of his hair. Tomas comes to the Fonda.

Tomas tells them about the cops patrolling La Nopalera on the hunt for MA, but they could also bring in the RP's for questioning. Lupe invites them to go to Acapulco.

MA is begging for change. Most people give him dirty looks and one guy even tells him to get a job. Pobrecito!

MA finally gets some change and calls Lupe. She's so happy to hear from him, and what took him so long? MA tells her he finally escaped from Mini and she is very happy to hear it. She misses him so. She also tells him about the Menchaca and RPs going to Acapulco. She asks where he is and tells her it's too complicated, but will be at the park tomorrow, she knows where.

MA is at a park and reading a paper and a dog comes by. Cute little puppy. MA pets the dog, he gets comfortable on the park bench, covers himself with the paper and goes to sleep on the bench.

Carm is all dressed in her beach gear, and is going along this time. Guendy teases Carm about going to the beach with Don C. Carm tells her to shut it. Guendy is also curious about what happened over there yesterday, but Carm won't tell, even when Guendy begs her. I think she told Guendy to keep an eye on Nepo.

MA is still asleep, when another homeless guy comes by. He's very drunk and wants a rental payment for MA using the bench all night. The guy said 30 something, I don't think it was centavos. Anyways, MA says he has no money and the guy threatens MA with a rock and MA goes.

Frida now knows what happened the day before with Leo and DA and Frida thinks Nepo is horrible and a troglodite.

Dona Mati and Ana Chofi are getting ready for this trip and Ana Chofi supposes she'll make this sacrifice for the kids. Meanwhile, Lupe and Carm are gathering food for the trip and Lupe tries to call Tomas, no answer.

DA calls Leo. They talk about Nepo and Leo states he doesn't want that homophobe to kill him. Leo tells him they are off to Acapulco. DA feels so bad that his interest in Leo got Leo into all kinds of trouble. After they hang up, DA is going to try to talk to Nepo, but he opens the door and there is an intimidating picture of Nepo and DA calls himself a coward, these problems were caused by Nepo and DA is scared.

Vilma and Ahole are in his office and he is on his Napoleonic rant again. Little by little he will get what he wants. And no, he doesn't want Vilma's advice. He calls Lupe and he wants to talk to Emi, so sorry she's busy and Emi isn't available and click. Ahole is pithed! He's pithed he wasn't able to coerce, er talk to Emi and Vilma gets him to breathe.

Lupe goes upstairs to help Emi pack and Emi wants to know if Ahole is coming with them. Nopis from Lupe and Emi doesn't look happy.

Tizoc has managed to get a microbus for the trip.

Guendy is at her salon when Nepo comes by. He'd like a word with her about something serious. It's about DA and his orientation. Guendy admits she already knew. He is very calm with Guendy.

Everyone is outside ready to get on the microbus, and Ana Chofi of course is reminiscing about the old days, when they took private planes on vacays, and now it's this microbus, and the whole familia says it with her this porca miseria! Tizoc talks about singing on the bus and I think Dona Mati mentions the great harmony. They all get on the microbus to go.

Nepo asks why Guendy didn't tell him. He won't allow this relationship with DA and this Prince of an RP. Guendy points out he was okay with Mi Mike being gay, but he isn't okay with DA being gay.

MA is hiding out in the park, right in the open behind a skinny tree, when he sees a juice stand, the ones he worked on with Nepo. The microbus toots the horn and pulls over at the park.

Vilma and Ahole are talking. He's about to pay Lupe a visit when that Agent comes to talk to Ahole. Ahole asks if he's found MA yet in La Nopalera. Nopis, not yet. Besides that Agent didn't come for that, but to give Ahole a report. He tells Ahole that they have run tests and that MA didn't kill Adolfo, cue Ahole's scared face!

Lupe goes into the park. MA is by the juice stand and talks to the lady running it, about how well the sales are and if people like the juice. She tells him it's all good, but better in some other areas, and to order something or she'll call a cop. Lupe finds MA and they have a bit of a smooch. They sit on a bench and she asks where he spent the night, and that he could use a bath. He won't tell her where, but she deduces where he spent the night. He gives her the flashdrive and tells her to give it to Tomas or Saul, she gives him a sandwich, he is really tearing into. She tells him the familias are going to Acapulco.

Meanwhile the familias wait in that hot microbus, as Tizoc whistles and Frida whistles back. A couple gets on the bus, thinking it's in service but Tizoc tells them it isn't. They insisit on being taken some where, when Leo stands up and tells them it's a private bus, while the Menchaca and RPs chant about going to Acapulco. The couple get off the microbus and Tizoc likes what Leo has done.

Nepo knocks on DA's door and wants a chat. DA is afraid to open the door, but he does. Nepo comes into the room and hugs Diego and tells him this is just a phase he is going through, and Diego is just confused! (Thanks Anon 10:15)

Lupe wants MA to come along too, but he is afraid that he'll get everyone in trouble if the cops catch him. Trofeo sees them canoodling, cause he came to check on the juice stand and sees Mi Mike with Lupe. Lupe takes MA to the microbus and Don C says this is why we stopped? Everyone can smell him, even Dona Mati wants a kiss but not too close. MA begs everyone's pardon and Lupe wants him to come along and the familas bicker.

Vilma has some questions for this Agente. So the Agente tells her the gun that was found at the murder scene was not the gun that killed Adolfo. They have done ballistics testing and the bullet (s) that killed Adolfo didn't come from that weapon. So in other words he was killed by another gun. Ahole says well it's simple, MA must have had two guns, cause he is an animal and a coward! The Agente isn't buying it. The Agente feels that there is the possiblity that someone is trying to blame as in frame, MA for this crime he didn't commit. Look on Ahole's face, priceless!

AVANCES:

Mini whines about MA

Lupe and MA enjoy the beach.
Vilma and Ahole do a night job at the Menchacas. MUST SEE TV!

Good Morning Y'all.

This recap is done from memory again. And Julie was so right about Ana Chofi accepting Leo. Who knew? If I missed anything please let me know ; )

Yeah, AS almost sounded like she'd just earned a new charm for a charm bracelet, a gay son! She just has to get him hooked up with an nice upperclass gay boy and it will be fine... I really did like Leo's expressions as the implications of what she was thinking and saying sunk in.

I loved it when the family chimed in on porca miseria!

I think the 'inaki' you say AS mentioned was Prince William himself, married to Kate... too funny how Leo argued William was not only married, but married to a WOMAN! and AS said basically that those were minor obstacles, but he had the name, the fortune and the status... too funny.

btw, thanks Mads!! for the recap and for being there always ready to step in.

Madelaine, another outstanding recap! Thank you for entertaining us this a.m.!

I loved:

AS fessin' up to Leonardo she knew he was gay since he was a little kid and as Pope Francis said "Who am I to judge them?" Leonardo then had a very bad realization: if she knew he was gay why would she let him marry Maca? She quickly changed the subject to it being a "class" thing not a sexual orientation thing and was totally enthralled in possible partners for him.

Diego wanting to fight for Leonardo but being temporarily intimidated by the poster of Nepo right outside his room.

Doña Mati telling AS her name shouldn't be Ana Sofia but "Ana Sufrida".

MA taking care of business on the run. Lupe giving him a kiss in spite of the stench.

I didn't like:

Nepo returning to continue the fight with the Ruizpalacios. Nepo telling Guendy that Leonardo perverted Diego.

Nobody telling Perla about what happened since she is so interested in Diego.

Perla telling Nepo they were off to Acapulco. Trofeo seeing MA.

I can't wait for the Acapulco antics!

Jarifa

Thank you, Mads. I can't read the recap till later, but I did look up who Iñaki is. He's a retired handball player, a duke, married to a duchess. From Majorca. (Is that in Spain?)

Dukes outrank counts, so you can see why AS would be excited about the idea. Alas, the only reason I'd get excited about a duke would be if there were a funny Muppet or cereal mascot.

Yes, Julie, Majorca (Mallorca) is a part of Spain.

Jarifa

Madelaine, thanks so much for today and yesterday. I haven't seen today's yet, but I can't wait to sit down and watch after your summary. (Favorite part of the summary: "Vilma shoos herself out." Ha!) yesterday's episode was brutal – I'm ready for the trip to Acapulco.
I wonder if the Leo\DA romance is the reason Univision put this show on so late at night? It shouldn't be!

Thanks everyone this week for the recaps. It seems that I can hardly ever comment on the show anymore, but I do make sure I can watch it as much as possible.

I can't believe they're going to Acapulco when it was just mentioned for the first time on this episode. That other trip was talked about for weeks before they finally went on it. We know from the previews that Diego goes and Alejo goes too. I wonder how that works out.

Nepo is not accepting Diego's orientation yet. He thinks Diego is confused and this is just a 'phase' but he will grow out of it!! I have a feeling he will take him a long long time to accept his son's orientation. In the meantime, Leo needs to watch out, part of the reason he went back to the Menchaca house was to confront Leo. That's when Mati and Leo overheard him and thought it would be best to go with the Menchacas to Acapulco.
From the ads before the commercial breaks we see Diego also in Acapulco, so he might get the courage at some point to confront Nepo or maybe he'll run away after Leo.
Acapulco should be fun!

Good Morning Y'all

Thank you kindly for all your kind words.

Fishknits:

Interesting thought about the charm bracelet. And she is still so class conscience isn't she?

Marta:

Thanks about the Prince William : )

Jarifa:

That Pope Francis quote was so funny really, because in real life he had actually said that. I missed the Ana Sufrida too, too funny. I too can't wait for the Acapulo antics.

Julie:

I like that idea of the Duke! It would be something Ana Chofi would say. Loved your idea about the count and the muppet, too funny.

Ann C:

It may have been why Uni is showing this one at 10pm. It's ridiculous. It would have been safe to show at 7:00pm. They cut the love scenes in all these TN's so much I think that kids see more in a PG13 movie than they would in these TNs.

Cathyx:

They did mention this trip about two weeks ago. As a matter of fact, it was Carm that suggested it, I think. They are slow during Lent week at the Fonda she said. Carm said the family could use some time away. I don't hold much with those scenes they show in between the commercials. They have fooled us with those before. I'm just happy both familias are going this time and it should be a hoot.

Anon 10:15:

Thanks so much for the clarification. I wasn't sure if Nepo accepted Diego's orientation or not. I too think it will take Nepo a long time to reconcile this. It would be fun if Diego showed up in Acapulco. They'd all have a blast away from Nepo.

Mads thanks so much for your recaps today & yesterday.

I remain concerned about Diego being around Nepo. Nepo is still angry and violent about Lupe. I don't think this is going change

regarding his (Nepo's) personality.

I wonder if the change of place will mean some good happens evidence-wise for MA

Karen:

I am with you about Nepo. What a tool that guy is. He never, ever listens. No wonder his first wife left him. I wonder if he treated his first wife like he treats Lupe. What Diego really needs right now is a Mama. I'm really hoping Diego does end up in Acapulco and Dona Mati takes him under her wing. Between her and Carm I think he'll finally get some motherly love : )

Thank you, Madelaine! Yay! We're off to Acapulco! Although I thought that bus still sat there for an awfully long time after Lupita saw Trofeo and rushed MA onto the bus and told Tizoc to get a move on. They all sat there forever chatting and arguing. Go! Move! Talk on the way!

I love Leo's rather irreverent style of praying. "Yo, bro, Jesus, what's up?" and "Thanks, God, you're back!" when something went in Leo's favor, and appealing to "Jesus Christ Superstar" and whatnot.

I wasn't sure if Diego was trying to psych himself up to go talk to his father, or to go talk to Leo and tell him he didn't want it to be over. Either way, foiled by terrifying household decor.

I like how in telenovelas you get so many little hints about people from the set dressing. Nepo's house is covered with giant pictures of Nepo himself, as well as a crazy assortment of wild cats and wacky horse imagery. Yep, that fits.

Last night I was noticing Diego's room. On one of his shelves, there is a miniature model motorcycle with a union jack motif. We've also seen the union jack on Leo's suitcase, and I think on socks Leo was wearing at one point. Other things in Diego's room included a little suitcase with lots of travel stickers (it might have been ceramic; it was just for decoration) and a map poster on the wall. Message: Diego needs to get out of there!

I find it...interesting...that Televisa's shows with gay characters have a strong message, including PSA-ish remarks by the characters, that being gay is not a sin, gay people are just naturally that way, there is nothing wrong with it, they should have all the same rights and privileges and be treated the same as anyone else...and then the show itself does not follow through on that. There is never any gay kissing, much less any more PG-13 scenes like they have no qualms about showing with hetero couples no matter how gross or inappropriate the couple in question. Often the gay couple seems more like business partners than romantic partners. It's just odd. Does Televisa think practicing what they preach would drive away their audience?

Julia:

What a keen eye you have. I never even noticed about Leo and Diego's stuff. Interesting, they have a lot in common. I have noticed Nepo's house, all manly man stuff, nothing to do with the market.

I think you are right about Uni and the PSAs and not following through. Some Europeans think we are prudes when it comes to our TV. I spoke to an Italian friend one day, and he says some of our music is suggestive, as are the music videos we show here, but our TV is like the dark ages with no skin being shown. I tried to explain the censors here, but he just didn't get it. In Europe they show full boobage, naked butts, but never any frontal below the hips nudity. Their love scenes on TV are not censored, they don't show below the waist but they do above. There really isn't any thing wrong with it, but we are who we are I guess.

Oh, one more thing. Was that Jaime Camil's Papa we saw this epi, the drunk homeless guy? I know in most of JC's TNs they have his Papa do a walk on with a couple of lines.

If that was JC's dad, I didn't recognize him at all. I think his father is better-looking than that guy, even dressed as a bum... but I didn't look very carefully.

Diego must have been really upset to be so spooked by the poster of his father with all the plantains. :) I have noticed that Nepo's decor also has a noticeable banana theme.

Ahole's fixation on Napoleon is also amusing. To follow this to its logical conclusion, perhaps Vilma should start slipping some arsenic into his meals.

I loved MA's imitation of the cartoon Coyote darting between/hiding behind skinny trees.

It was so cute when they were all standing outside the crazy bus (it looks nothing like the Partridge Family bus, but it reminds me of it anyway), in the sun, and AS was holding a very sleepy little DaVinci to her bosom, shaded by her wide-brimmed hat!

So... if my doctor gives me a prescription for "rest," will my insurance pay for a trip to Acapulco? And can I get the Menchacas to feed me? I would like that very much.

Julie, you reminded me of my other favorite part: MA talking to the trees like they were people.

Madelaine, interesting that you mentioned Jaime Camil's dad. So, I did a little research and found out that both Jaime Camil's dad and wife have a scene with AS. According to the articles, that episode supposedly aired in Mexico on April 21st which would make it episode 116 from what I could gather. They are playing tourists. I just love researching the unimportant and inconsequential. Just call me shallow!

Jarifa

BTW, this novela is being shown at 8:25 in Mexico.

Jarifa

Jarifa:

Thanks so much for that info on JC's Papa and his Wife. How cool. We will have to keep an eye out for that : ) And no it isn't shallow, it means you are dedicated to the TN amiga, which isn't a bad thing : ) About the time slot in Mexico, it's perfect! I wish they had done that here. This is the best comedy one I have seen so far : )

Madelaine, we may not have an overabundance of viewers on CarayCaray, but according to the ratings QPTR along with LQLVMR are scoring big for Univision here in its competition with the traditional broadcast networks.

Is the "time" an issue for dramas at 10:00 eastern/9:00 central for the Caray Caray viewers or is the time an issue because this is a comedy?

Jarifa

I agree that the drunk guy did not look like JC's dad at all. JC's dad showed in La few during the early episodes when 'Fernando' was competing in some equestrian show thing and they filmed that at his family ranch/property and his dad was a guest of the 'Conceptos' company, i think. So when Lety showed up, Marcia was nagging about Lety to him... and he witnessed Fernando 'defending Lety' in front of Marcia.
JC's sister, Isabella, is playing a character in Lo que la vida me robo (Amalia is her name there?)

I too loved
Diego wanting to fight for Leonardo but being temporarily intimidated by the poster of Nepo right outside his room.

and MA talking to the trees... too funny.

O too noticed the motorcycle with the union jack theme on teh shelf in Diego's room, It called my attention because it was shaped like a scooter and i thought it was cute...

So episode 116 - that's next Tuesday, right? I wonder if we'll be able to spot them

Thank you for the recap Madeline!

I thought Ana Sofía refered to Iñaki Undargarín. He is a Duke married to the Infanta Cristina and he has had gay rumours. I've felt for a while that he is a real life Alejo though. His scandals for embezzlement affected the image of the Monarchy and I feel like that had a part in the abdication of King Juan Carlos.

Julia:

I agree with you on the lack of kisses and equal treatment of same sex couples vs heterosexual couples. I feel there is a disconnect between the worries of writers/producers and those of the network executives. In other Televisa's productions for their other channels (telenovelas are shown in their main channel: channel 2) they have had no problem showing same sex couples kissing but they are worried that telenovelas are watched by the most conservative part of the population. In Los Exitosos Pérez they cut a kiss between Jaime Camil and José Ron, so the producers sometimes push but the executives are the ones with the final say.

I'm sorry I don't post more but the last few weeks have been crazy. Fortunately I got a free day today because Mexico was playing in the World Cup, lol.

Jarocha

Jarifa, the 10:00 time is an issue for me mainly because it's late, but I also find it odd that such "lite" fare is being served in the last hour of prime time.

On the major US networks, 10pm is mostly reserved for heavier stuff with more violence, sex, profanity, etc. Or documentary-type shows about gruesome crimes.

On other channels at 10pm, you will find the news, which can be pretty gruesome too. Or with cable or syndicated programming, the not-kid-friendly comedies are usually on at 10pm or later. (I have no idea whether QPTR would be considered kid-friendly, but it's more kid-friendly than LQLVMR.)

And I think this is the first time we've ever seen a comedy TN at 10pm on Univision. A few years ago, before Uni started running TNs at 10 pm, the 9pm slot was usually reserved for the most "adult" TNs.

That's why this seems like a strange break from tradition to me. So maybe Uni really is worried how people will react to the Leo/Diego romance, even as sweet and benign as it's been so far. Me, I just wish someone would wash Nepo's mouth out with soap.

Exactly. This seems like a perfect family-hour comedy. There's a little violence, but nothing really graphic or gritty. I wish it were on earlier so I could watch it and still go to bed earlier, instead of having to decide whether I want to stay up later or put off watching the episode. I like being up to speed for the discussions here, but sometimes I can't stay up that late!

Jarocha, the mainstream U.S. networks are the same way about gay relationships. They are very toned down and little shown compared to straight relationships. It's only been recently that even brief kisses are shown on the broadcast (not cable) channels in prime-time shows.

I will probably never stop thinking it's twisted that all sorts of violence can be shown, but a little affection is apparently crossing a line.
