TELEMUNDO Y MÁS: THE FRONT PAGE -- El Señor de los Cielos II, En Otra Piel, et cetera, week of June 16, 2014
This will be a bit shorter than usual because I was watching my recording of the US World Cup team winning their match 2-1! Wow! They scored almost immediately, and then I was a nervous wreck for more than 80 minutes. Ghana tied it up, but John Brooks scored on a lovely corner kick from Graham Zusi. Bliss.
Ernesto, always thinking only of himself, talks Elena out of his leaving Napa just because his brother has been shot. Carlos overhears his end of the conversation and that he refers to Gerardo as his brother.
In Napa Jorge, in a very classy fashion, slaps down Ernesto when he tries to get Camila out on the town with him after their dinner.
In classic telenovela fashion, Mondriana manages to get into Gerardo’s recovery room with the whole sanitation garb on. She begs him to forgive her. Meanwhile Elena is being questioned by the cops. She tells the cop she waited 10 minutes before coming downstairs after she heard a shot [!] Uh Oh, the cop wants to do the GSR test on her hands to see if she’s fired a gun.
At the bookstore party Eileen tells Ricardo about her telenovela role that has been adapted from a movie called Sin Compasión. It’s about a young girl who goes back to the hacienda of her youth to get revenge on the owners who killed her parents. The girl falls in love with the owners’ son. Whoa! Ricardo remembers that it’s the same screenplay his father says was robbed from him. Ricardo tells Eileen that his father didn’t register the screenplay and doesn’t even have rough drafts. He says sometimes he thinks maybe his father made the whole thing up.
Mondriana tells Gerardo in the hospital room that she ought to hate him, but can’t. He recuperates from anesthesia faster than the normal human and grasps her hand. He tells her he doesn’t love Elena. He only loves Mondriana and he knows that she loves him too.
The cop tries to explain why he has to do the test to the increasingly irritable Elena. He says it’s because the victim hasn’t woken up yet to say what happened. He asks a lot of pointed questions about her relationship to Gerardo, saying it’s odd she lives in the same house as her aunt’s widower. She gets more and more shrill having to deal with the insistent cop. He says she’ll have to come to the house with him to open up.
Diego tells Rodrigo he thinks that Selma doesn’t want Mónica to return to who she really is.
Whew. No Puppy Gang showed up at the bookstore opening and Gabriel and Jennifer are in bed together at Casa Serrano. He gives her the dolphin necklace that is, of course, in a Macy’s bag when he gives it to her.
Lorena comes come and sees the blood in the foyer. She calls her sweet child who instructs her to get the gun from inside the piano and wipe it clean. [I’m surprised she didn’t ask her to grab hold of it and leave HER fingerprints on it instead!]
Rodrigo notices that Marta leaves the party in kind of a huff. He’s oblivious to her getting jealous over the time he spent with Lorena.
Carlos and Ernesto have a drink together. Carlos catches on when Ernesto asks him not to tell Camila he’s Gerardo’s brother that Ernesto is after Camila. He tells Ernie he wants to know what happened. Elena calls Ernie on his cell and nervously tells him that the cops are interviewing Gerardo.
Gerardo has told the cops he remembers exactly what happened. Elena is asked to come to his room. She enters demanding to know what it is they’re having Gerardo sign. [Could she possibly behave more guiltily?] The cop says that Gerardo told him that the gun went off when he was cleaning it. Our charming Elena then snarls at the cop that she feels like accusing them of abuse of power.
When the cops leave the room, Elena rushes to Gerardo. “Mi amor. Mentiste para salvarme. Te amo.” He snarls at her to get out of his room. He doesn’t even want to see her. He tells her he lied to the police not to save her but to save his own skin. She babbles that it was an accident, and he responds that it was an accident that would never have happened if she weren’t so paranoid. She says she knows that he loves her. He tells her not to confuse things. He told the police it was an accident because he’s quite sure she wouldn’t hold up under questioning. She’d have spilled the whole thing. He says he only lied to save himself because he knows he can’t count on her for anything.
We get another of the increasingly repetitious scenes with Selma and Mondriana in which Selma tries to talk her out of revenge and Mondriana insists she has to go ahead with it.
The women leave the bookstore, most of them, and go to the pensión to keep the party going. For some reason Susana has come as well and, of course, asks about Jennifer. Maite slips up and says that Jennifer shouldn’t even have come disguised because the gang is after her. Susana smirks. Uh oh.
Elena tells Lorena she has a recording on her computer of Mónica Serrano playing the piano. But there’s nothing there. Elena shrieks, falls to the floor, and says she’s not crazy over and over again. Lorena comforts her bad seed, tucks her in, and Elena appears for a moment to accept this. But then she jumps up and starts snarling at Lorena.
Marta has stayed over at the pensión and tells Diego they partied until 5:00 a.m. Lorena calls to get in the first crack at the big lie, telling Marta that Gerardo shot himself. When Mondriana comes into the kitchen, Lorena tells her the same whopper. Mondriana then takes a cup of tea to Elena, feigning sympathy.
Excellent recap, Novelera. The relative shortness did justice to a rather frustrating episode.
For us in the East, I got to watch US v Ghana live before EOP started. I agree. What an amazing game. It was especially fun because my nephew was at the game in Natal.
The logical mind finds a few holes in the story. Unless Elena is an idiot, her computer would have a password. How did Mondriana get access to erase her recording of her performance as Mónica Serrano? For that matter, how did she know exactly when to disappear so as not be there when Elena came downstairs?
In the real world, at least as it is portrayed on cop shows, the police would have gone immediately to the house and secured the scene. They wouldn't have just accepted Gerardo's story - the oldest one in the book - that he shot himself while cleaning his gun. People do do that but it is a common lie, at least on TV.
The police tell Gerardo that there is no gun registered to him or anyone in the house. That is a crime right there. Why aren't they issuing a citation to Gerardo for having an unregistered handgun and confiscating the gun to see if was used in other crimes?
How incredibly convenient that the straight-laced Marta allows herself and all the other servants (except the newbie, Jennifer, to spend the night away from the house.
I guess Lorena's devotion to Elena doesn't run to cleaning up pools of blood since she calls Marta to do that. In real life you have to get a special cleaning service to do that since it is a biohazard.
Muchas gracias, novelera, for another excellent recap. And thanks, too, to Jean for some illuminating comments. One thing I don't understand is what happened to the recording Elena claimed to have on her computer. I share Jean's doubts about the way the story seems to be playing out, but in addition, it looked to me as if Elena still had a shot on her computer of the piano, but it didn't include Mónica playing. What would explain this?
My guess on why there was still a shot of the piano on the computer [and I'm sure they won't bother to explain this] is that Mondriana deleted the part of the recording that showed her playing but left the rest of the recording that just showed the piano. Quite a technical achievement.
Or possibly, Elena wasn't actually recording the camera feed but took screen shots and Mondriana deleted them and substituted her own. The writers are always fast and loose with details like this.
Not a whole lot happened, but tonight may be a different story. Leonor's trial is starting, Ignacio is defending her, he tells the judge it's shameful that we're condemning this woman who infiltrated Pablo Escobar's operation, infiltrated Aurelio Casillo's operation, is a hero in her country. Elsa, who tells the President thanks, but she doesn't want to be in his cabinet, she's gonna run for governor, is trying to portray Leonor as a renegade, corrupt cop out for revenge and/or personal gain. She also tells Lucila she has beautiful hands, and suggests a massage (!)
Now it's Ponte's turn to testify. Elsa offered him a deal, 15 years if he doesn't go against Leo, freedom if he does. What will he say?
Bert says goodbye to Xime and Alba, he's not going to say goodbye to his Dad, who would oppose his leaving.
Mati is being held prisoner in Chema's house. She doesn't like it.
Monica sleeps with Cabo, then when Chema shows up, Cabo has to hide (holding a gun at the ready), while Monica covers. She continues to tell both Cabo and Chema that AC's dead.
AC had called Monica when she was in bed with Cabo, she told him she was sleeping with someone, this makes him jealous, and that apparently makes his subsequent sex with Lai BETTER. Monica is setting up some kind of meeting between AC and Cabo, but neither one knows who they're meeting with yet. Uh oh!
thanks so much novelera!
(dark detective) Carlos is pretty good at getting to the facts, (not enough money in being a good guy I guess), but I don't mind watching Ernesto squirm a little, I'm not quite sure why no one knows that he and Geraldo are brothers, are they using different last names? It didn't seem to be a hard decision for him not to go to his dying brothers side because he might blow his cover.
I was thinking Elena left her computer on to record from the camera, and forgot about it in the excitement, I was also expecting to see her shooting the gun on that, since she was by the piano.
I suppose if your lover shot you, it might change things in your relationship.
Jean, what you say makes sense (or rather, it makes telenovela sense :-) ). But though I do have a new beanie, I can't seem to tighten it enough to be content with the explanation. We've had no indication that Mondriana has the tech savvy needed for such tasks. Oh well... As you say, the writers are probably not going to give us any other explanation (since there probably isn't one).
wow, thanks Hombre,
so cool how you just weave this story together.
doesn't Monica tell Cabo, who is worried about passports and such to sneak out of the country, that she has a contact with a private jet that can just fly him there, this makes him happy until Chema shows up in her living room, and wonders if he has been betrayed.
Chema was being pretty cool about finding out if Aurelio is alive, but steps up the heat wanting to search Monica's house for Cabo, wow, Monica is such an emotional person her poker face is on the verge of cracking, but she gets by, whew!
I'm not really buying the airplane switcheroo, with his double Trino in the Miami plane, because airplanes all have their individual registration numbers on them, and I guess he is leaving Lai behind, who wonders if he will cut her out of the deal, but the sex is good.
and isn't part of the original Aurelio/Lai deal, that Cabo gets snuffed.
and Chema sends boy Andrews off to Miami to see what's up with Chacorta.
OP:I enjoy reading the recap of Otra but don't watch.
Does anyone know when this one ends? I want to see the Ultimas Capitulos when the time comes.
Nanette
I forgot to mention in my recap that Mondriana told Selma she had to press hard on her vengeance because when she was near Diego, Adriana would likely continue to try to reclaim her body. Since it's likely that Diego will soon work at Casa Serrano, I am expecting lots of scenes where Mondriana gets taken over by Adriana and then Mónica fights to regain control to save her daughters.
Nanette, I'm thinking EOP will run until August. They haven't said anything about etapa culminante, (six weeks, I think), ultimas semanas (four weeks) or capitulos finales (two weeks).
Linda K - I have removed your comment. The rules of this blog prohbit spoilers, which include the teasers for the next episode.
I believe you are new to the blog so it's not a biggie, please continue to comment just don't refer to what is in the teaser - they are frequently deceptive anyway.
Thanks very much, Hombre, for another helpful recap. And thanks, too, to deb, for additional remarks.
Thank you. I started watching this one and then had to make the tough decision to drop it for DeQ on Uni (I was already in a committed relationship with Robo--three TN's would have been impossible).

Leonor's trial ends. She's innocent of abusing her authority, acting as a rogue cop. But she's guilty of murdering the woman prisoner, and gets 15 years! Whoops! Ignacio is devastated, tells his parents he's gonna move to Mexico City to work on Leo's appeal (and be near her). He sort of tells Leo he wants to be her boyfriend, she says forget about me. Ignacio's Mom has cancer, but she's feisty, and criticizes her husband Max for not helping Ig, and for sleeping with Elsa.
Elsa also sleeps with Chema! She says it's just this once. She's running for governor, and wants his help. BTW, Max's golf buddy Pedro, a Senator, is also running for governor.
Ponte's in jail, too, having not turned on Leo. Tijeras thinks he recognizes Ponte as having worked for the Robles family. I don't know if this is true, but this could actually help Ponte.
AC's airplane thing works perfectly! Trino (his tall double) had gone to Miami, along with Chacorta. Trino took off from Miami, AC took off in an identical plane from Panama, filled with drugs (or maybe money from drugs they already sold). In mid-air, they crossed. But Trino calls the Miami airport, I've got a hydraulic problem, and they say return to the airport. He keeps going, and AC's plane goes to the airport! AC gets out of the plane, and the airport guy asks some questions (with Chacorta pointing an AK-47 at him from a hiding place). In the end, the airport guy thinks AC is Trino, let's them go. So they got the drugs through, they're rich!
But first, Monica takes Cabo to a guy who will fly him out of the country. Wrong! It's AC, with Lai in tow. AC and Monica point guns at Cabo, who's not too happy that Monica played him like this. AC gives Lai the gun, so she can kill Cabo, she punches his nose. But Cabo says a) Oscar had betrayed AC, and b) Chema is trying to take over AC's operation, and already tried to kill him once.
This last thing hits home, and AC tells everybody we can't kill Cabo yet, he has to help us bring down Chema. Lai and Chacorta are disappointed, but at least Chacorta gets to throw money into a swimming pool with babes. Lai seems to be second fiddle, as AC prefers Monica. They make bad guy love on top of money, as he wonders if she did it with Cabo, and she counters, as much as you did with Lai!
Bert is crossing the border. So far, so good!
love reading your recaps Hombre!
hmm, Leo didn't kill that girl, she just used her as a shield against that other girl that was attacking her, why wasn't that brought out, and where are the witnesses, couldn't they just do these trials by texting each other.
I was thinking Max's golf buddy is the current Govenor ?? (Jalisco- where Guadalajara is and where we learned in Camelia only Tequila can be called that if it is made here)
and Chema likes Tequila and would like to be friends with the governor.
wasn't Chacorta so hot because they kidnapped his mom (rocking his head side-to-side), and most of that beating Cabo got was because he wouldn't give up Tijeras, then he threw out Chema.
wow, Monica sleeping with Cabo, saving him from Chema, then setting him up, a gift to Aurelio (who is alive), and holding a gun to his head, while taking his, and afterwards a pile of blood sitting in a chair, Monica picks up his hat and places it on his head, "gracias Monica", he politely says.
I guess boy Andrews didn't go to Miami, but to a taco stand, where Chema declines a taste, points out that he isn't helping much help.
and Bert makes one last goodbye phone call to his dad before leaving Mexico, before throwing his phone off into the brush.
Deb you are correct, Leo did not actually kill the prisoner. The prisoner was stabbed by the other prisoner in an attempt to stab Leo. I assume the reason the other prisoners won't testify is because they are all against Leo and won't tell the truth. But maybe one of em will think other wise and tell the truth. That's the only chance Leo has to get out.
Does anyone remember why the Casillas wanted Tijeras dead in the first season? You know, when Cabo brought Tijera's cousin's dead body to AC to prove that he killed him? I know it had to do with some beef he had with Chacorta but I don't remember what was the reason.
-VRO
Thanks, Hombre. I envy your gift for succinct recaps!
I can't help rooting for Beto. He's done some terrible things, but seems to be truly repentant.
If you look in the dictionary for "wily", you'll see a picture of Cabo.
I suppose they're going to go with the usual telenovela BS of Elsa getting away with everything until the last week. I can't stand her!
Ignacio said something to his father to the effect that he couldn't believe Judge _____, whatever his name was, would lend himself to something like that. So I guess he believes the fix was in? They surely fooled me. Acquitting Leonor for operating illegally and another charge that I forget and then pinning murder on her when it so clearly was not.
So the President, who was so sharp in El Señor I, now seems like something of a hack. He's bought Elsa's act hook, line, and sinker. And I was quite disgusted that he lent himself to her ploy to distract the press from the attempt on his life by sending a bunch of troops to quell some civil disobedience by some indigenous people. This group sounded a bit like the Zapatistas that were at war with the Mexican government in Chiapas. And, when innocent people were shot down, none of the blame fell on her!
OFF TOPIC:
Viva México! The country has a new hero in Memo Ochoa who made 5 fantastic saves against Brazil. I watched the Telemundo news last night and they showed the exultant crowds in D.F. and other places. Only in the World Cup is a 0-0 tie exciting and only if it's against Brazil!
Deb, thanks for your clarifications and observations.
I think the reason why it wasn't brought out that Leo used that girl as a shield is that Leo, under her "code of honor", doesn't want to rat on anyone else, either to show she's not vengeful, or to protect her from reprisals later. So all she said was "Judge, I was defending myself, and that girl ended up dead". I agree, it's stupid. But good for our dramatic story!
From the New York Times:
Walter White, Meet Walter Blanco: It’s the Same Story, With a Different Desert
‘Metástasis,’ a Spanish-Language Version of ‘Breaking Bad,’ Debuts
JUNE 17, 2014
Critic’s Notebook
By MIKE HALE
A scrubby landscape. A pair of white pants floating through the air. A large vehicle driven by an overexcited man in a pair of tighty whities and a gas mask.
You seem to be watching the opening minutes of the first episode of “Breaking Bad,” but you notice a few differences. The vehicle full of drug-lab paraphernalia and dangerous fumes is not an RV; it’s a decrepit school bus. When the driver staggers out for a breath of fresh air, he puts his shirt on so that he can play the rest of the scene semi-modestly. And when he picks up a video camera to record what he thinks will be his last testament, he doesn’t say, “My name is Walter Hartwell White.” He says, “Mi nombre es Walter Blanco.”
What you’re actually watching is the first episode of “Metástasis,” the Spanish-language telenovela version of “Breaking Bad.” The premiere is posted online at Hulu, and seven episodes are available for Hulu Plus subscribers, at the same time that the series is having a broadcast run on UniMás. On television, where it plays every weeknight, the telenovela — which encompasses the entire story line of five seasons of “Breaking Bad” — will play out in about three months.
“Metástasis,” shot in the high desert in Colombia, is an episode-for-episode, practically shot-for-shot remake, done with considerably less time and money than were spent on the American original on AMC. (The show’s creator, Vince Gilligan, had no input in the adaptation.) A “Breaking Bad” fan will be aware that this is a lesser version, but there’s an interesting halo effect: The pull of the original is so strong, and you’re so busy making connections between the two, that the more routine (though quite competent) cinematography and staging aren’t really bothersome.
A greater impediment for many American viewers will be the lack, for now, of English subtitles, even on Hulu. It seems likely that fan-subtitled versions will appear in obscure and illegal quarters of the Internet. But if you know the original, it’s surprisingly easy to follow along. When Walter Blanco looks into the camera and tells his wife — Skyler, in the original — “Cielo, tu eres el amor de mi vida,” there’s no mistaking what he means.
Thanks very much, Hombre, for your excellent recap. I especially appreciated your explaining what was going on with the two airplanes. I was clueless.
I was stunned when Leo didn't offer a more compelling and specific defense against the murder charge. I appreciate your attempt to explain, but I'm still dumbfounded. Leo didn't murder the other woman, not even in self-defense. I don't see where there's "honor" in not ratting out the woman who did the killing, especially since she was trying to kill Leo. It's not like ratting out a friend. Then again, it's unlikely that any of the witnesses would have testified to support Leo had she told the truth about what happened, and Leo probably realizes this, so perhaps your reprisal theory is the most reasonable explanation.
Variopinta, I enjoyed your remark about Cabo's bleeding strawberry jelly. I was surprised that they didn't do a better job of making it seem more like blood.
I sure didn't understand the airplane shenanigans, tks Hombre.
All of the other prisoners were after Leo, so I am sure they would protect their buddy that actually stabbed their buddy & NOT Leo. She could say I didn't do it & what? 4,5 would say she did? Would they rat on the one that did it? Leo is tough, she can be the new carcél honcho, or is that honcha? Right now, she is on her own, no friends on the inside.
First, let’s have a momento of silence for SPOILER ALERT the Spanish national team, QEPD. Ok, done.
Ernesto sucks up to Jorge when Carlos slimes in. Jorge talks about the festival, drops a couple names, Carlos pretends to know what he’s saying while taking a big sniff of the wine he’s holding. Jorge wants to talk to Carlos, and Carlos is too happy to comply, and he gives Ernesto a knowing look.
Ger and Elena talk about the threat of Carlos, and Ger mentions that if Carlos messes this up, they won’t be able to get married. I thought he was done with her and told her so, but apparently he decided it’s easier to go along with the sociopath until things calm down.
Jorge asks Carlos about his business, complements his entrepreneurial know-how, and asks about his distributions channel, for Jorge’s own wine in Mexico. But I’m pretty sure Jorge is checking him out and doesn’t trust him. Jorge is not an idiot like Ernesto.
Eileen keeps playing with the psychic, telling her the story of her “mom” who fell in front of a train or some crazy thing. She fake cries to the heavens.
Mondriana tells Selma about Diego working at the mansion now. She feels bad about getting between him and Adriana, but she can’t go yet. Selma brings up Esteban and trying to contact him, but Mondri assures her that he’s in a peaceful place. When she leaves, Selma flashes back to what the psychic told her. Eileen, who has beamed back home, spills about knowing about the medium. She says no way is she a medium, large or extra large maybe. Good one, Eileen.
Gerardo remembers what Mondri told him in the hospital. He tries to get out of bed. He has escaped the hospital and shows up at Mondriana’s door. He asks how she knew he was in the hospital. Oooohhh, good one Ger! 10 points to you. He demands to know, since she wasn’t supposed to be home. She asks him to leave but he won’t. She tells him she was at the lake house, he wasn’t there, so she left and saw the ambulance when she got back to the mansion.
Elena has run up to Napa to talk to Carlos. She swears to him that they aren’t selling the business, and are just telling Jorge that so that he backs off a little. She needs time to deal with a land issue and will cancel the sale at the last minute. Meanwhile, Ernesto is having dinner with the girls. Emi notices that he looks sad and he says he’s worried about his position when Jorge takes over. Emi laughs at him and takes her leave to go watch a movie, or something not as boring as this dinner. I think I’d go with her. But Ernie looks all happy to be alone with Camila.
Ger is still pressuring Mondri about what she told him in the hospital, and that it sounded more profound that simple jealousy, as she claimed it was. He says he had an adventura with Elena, but it was before he met Monica. He was too weak to say anything to Monica, and besides, Elena is crazy. He was just trying to smooth things over with her when Mondri caught them in the office. He is not a villain.
Elena is still trying to convince Carlos that she’s not going to do anything behind his back. They don’t have secrets from each other, RAUL. He gives her a look when she says his name, and changes the subject to ask about the shooting. She sticks to the accident story. Then he asks why the fact that Ernie is Ger’s brother is something she wants kept hidden. She says something, but he figures it has something to do with Camila. He mentions her and her threats, but Elena tells him not to worry. Camila is nothing to bother with. So he’s done talking and slithers over next to Elena to hit on her. She looks properly disgusted.
Diego and Marta talk in the kitchen and Marta wants to know what’s up with him and Monica. Diego tells her that they have a complicated past, but he was born to take care of her. Marta is worried about Elena, but Diego promises he won’t be a problem.
Elena has walked out into the hall and runs into Jorge. She says she’s there to take care of things. Then Carlos oozes out to say hello. She and Jorge talk about business. She’d be oh so happy to see the winery pass into his hands. They make plans to talk more at breakfast. Elena looks like she’s getting ideas.
Ricardo is working late, and wants to finish a few things up before he goes. Tomas is out of there and tells him to lock up. He has Camila-memories. Pfffft.
Ernie and Camila finish dinner and he invites her to dance. She wants to beg off but he convinces her to stay, when her phone rings. It’s Ricardo. She tells him she’s in Napa and will call him when she gets back to LA. But now she’s able to tell Ernie to piss off she’s tired and she leaves him alone at the table.
Ger is still at the guest house. He says he lied to the cops about Elena to control her better, and he wants to leave with Mon where no one can bother them. She wants HIM to leave. He knows she loves him, she cries, and they kiss. He pressures her about their love and kisses her while she tells him no, which is totally not cool Gerardo. Minus 100 points. But she gives in . Meanwhile, Diego has left the kitchen and is walking by the guest house. He notices a light on and pauses there outside. He walks closer to it and steps on the inevitable stick. They hear and stop. Mon listens at the door (I didn’t catch if she saw him and can’t review since I forgot to rewind the vcr). He walks away. She looks through windows but doesn’t see anyone and wants Ger to leave before someone does see them. He FINALLY goes.
Diego breakfasts at Rodrigo’s and gives him the scoop about what’s happening at the mansion. He warns Diego about Elena. With two warnings now, he’s bound to have problems with her. Rod says he’ll look for another book for Diego to read to help Mondriana. All the well-educated and licensed shrinks in LA are worried about their livelihood.
Jenny and Gabe wake up, late! Jenny freaks out and knocks Gabe out of bed as she gets up to get ready for work. They get all cute before brushing their teeth. Blech. He leaves her room and runs into Susanna. He asks her not to say anything to his mother, and he knows she won’t because (sarcastically) she’s such an angel. Yeah, and (angrily) you’re the devil, she says.
At breakfast, Jorge asks Elena about what’s happening at the house. Elena is sure it’s one of the employees playing tricks. He wants to bu the house and put it in the name of the girls, and he thinks she should stay too. She pretends that it isn’t important and that it should go to just the girls. Then she glares at him when he’s not looking. He tells her she was like a daughter to Monica. The discussion turns to Lorena. Elena wants to ask him something: Did he know her father? Dun Dun duuuun.
Kelly
I wasn't paying that much attention but I don't think that Diego saw Mondriana and Gerardo kissing.
I have never seen a man's dress shirt like Ric was wearing at work where the collar is the same color as the tie. Bad fashion decision, Ric - lose it.
My favorite part of the episode was Eileen's performance at the psychic's place. She told Luz Marina that her mother had been killed in a parachuting accident. "Her parachute didn't open?" asks Luz. "No," replies Eileen, "it opened but she couldn't control her descent and landed right in front of speeding train." Luz Marina is not much of a psychic if she couldn't pick that up as a tall tale.
Time for another phase in our novela. Bert does successfully get to Barcelona, where he meets a cute girl who helps him settle into his student apartment. How long will you be here? she asks. Oh, as long as it takes to get a career, he responds. Bert's new fake name is Felix.
Chacorta brings prisoner Cabo home to Mom, she kicks them out, she hates that kidnapper. Then AC brings Monica, Alba kicks them out, too, she hates Monica since she wrecked Ximena's marriage.
Ximena starts work on her church project, a community center, meeting a nice new guy along the way (didn't catch his name).
Matilde gets to tell Chema about her project with Lai, the brothel in Guadalajara where rich guys will be filmed spilling secrets, and he likes the idea. He even gives her the big suitcase! Lai is still mad she didn't kill Cabo (says she froze), but the money and the new business with Mati perk her up a bit. They'll be the richest women in the country!
AC and Monica take Cabo to Colombia. They bring in Cabo's son, whom they've abducted. He's about 20 and afraid. AC acts as if he's going to kill Cabo, and tells him to say goodbye to his son first. Cabo has a pep talk with his son. AC points the gun at Cabo, and we veteran novela watchers KNOW that means he WON'T shoot him! Sure enough, he kills the son. They then let Cabo go, alone in the jungle, to stew in his regrets (but we know he'll be BACK).
We also meet two jungle military leaders, Macario, who's friendly with AC, and another guy, who's friendly with Chema.
We also meet Victoria, daughter of Pedro, who's running for governor (I think against Elsa).
And then....
Five years pass! Give me a break, how lame is that? Oh well, that's what we have. Here's what everyone's doing.
Bert is now a lawyer (college and law school in 5 years, not bad!). He gets a letter from his Dad (who didn't know where he was, as Xime also didn't know, oh well), saying AC wants Felix/Bert to be his new Turco, since Bert's now so well trained in book stuff. Bert gets teary, not gonna happen.
Leonor has been in jail for 5 years, and it's been hell. I guess Ignacio is still working on her appeal.
As far as we know, Tijeras and Ponte are also in jail, but we don't see.
Xime's community center is a success, and she's working with that new guy.
Some new children have been hired to play teenage Rutila and whoever her sister is (probably a new Victorcito, too, maybe a new Carlitos).
Monica and AC have been in the jungle all this time, they built the biggest drug lab ever, she's got cool new jungle fashions going. AC now has a full beard, and goes by the name of Franciso/Pancho.
We know nothing of Cabo.
Andrews, who works with Chema, sees the TV. Its the World Trade Center bombing, 9/11/2001, and Andrews tells Chema something like, if we're not with THOSE guys, we're not big enough.
Yes, a new phase (where all semblance of reality has been jettisoned, of course). But I'm still watching :)
I thought Ernesto knew that Carlos killed the Perv and was a sex trafficker, among other things. If so, I'm sure he's genuinely uneasy around Carlos. He's a wimp compared to Carlos.
I was thinking that Diego would get in trouble with Gerardo before Elena.
Something tells me Selma is going to make a stupid mistake with this psychic. Even after being warned.
spanish student.
thanks so much Kelly!
love your style.
hmm, I'm waiting for Geraldo to see Diego working in the garden, he's going to flip, didn't Geraldo wonder at one time if Monica was working him for the money (like he usually does with women), and now Diego, her former lover is there and they act like there is nothing going on.
thanks Jean for the parachute story, I can rarely follow what the heck Eileen is talking about.
how about Selma hinting to Monica that maybe Adriana could help her with Esteban.
so Geraldo knows that Raul is really Carlos, but did Elena/Ernesto ever tell him the rest of the story?
Tks Hombre
That was odd, 5 años despues, for a moment I thought it was the final.
Does Matilde know that AC is alive. Lai hasn't told anyone, but Matilde has the world's biggest mouth.
wow Hombre, you must have been taking notes.
I got it wrong yesterday, Max's friend (Pedro Navárez) is not the governor, but working on it, and I don't think Max will be much help as Elsa's charms (shall we politely say) has him totally hooked.
also thinking back over Leo, the stabbed girl dropped to the floor dying, and as Leo tried to help, she grabbed the knife (still in her gut) just as the guards walked in (who would be the only credible witnesses in a court of law).
wasn't Macario the guerrilla from the first season that Aurelio came to terms with after a little war.
ah but we did see Tijeras, sitting on some steps making a call to, (?? was it Macario or another jungle guy), under Bigotes watchful eye. (didn't Cabo/Tijeras originally broker an Aurelio deal with the guerrillas, as to why they got together in the first place)
Pedro's daughter Victoria Narváez is played by Marlene Favela, who I first saw as Esmeralda in Zorro.
the older Rutila is being played by Carmen Aub, the girl who was always cutting herself in "¿Dónde está Elisa?" and the annoying Neena in "Pasión Prohibida".
VRO- on Chacorta/Tijeras, weren't they in the jungle making a deal with the guerillas when Chacorta got upset and was going to back out, but Tijeras carried on, with a gun to Chacorta's head.
Variopinta- yes Matilde knows Aurelio is alive, and since Lai is sleeping with Aurelio and Matilde is sleeping with Chema they have some sort of deal between them.
(btw- I'm not rewatching these with english captions so generally what I say are just my best guesses)
Esmeralda is back! I picked that as my telenovela name after La Rosa y La Espada. I have a thing for masked men. But I hope she's not another corrupt official or drug dealer. We have enough of those.
I thought Andrews just said to Chema, I hope we're not with those guys, when they saw the WTC. And here I was, thinking he had some limit. Should've known better.
Poor Beto. He thinks he's out, but now he has his dad writing to him and trying to suck him back into that life. I felt like he was crying because of what his dad told him he had done, and he still has conflict between wanting nothing to do with that life and loving his father. Stupid Aurelio, bragging about everything. And now, given what Aurelio did to Cabo's son, I don't hold out much hope for Beto being alive at the end. Pretty sure Cabo could put his revenge on a slow burn. I like the Heriberto character and hoped for his reformation, but getting killed wouldn't be a totally undeserved end.
Kelly
Hombre, just a clarification on what Andrews told Chema when they were looking at the WTC tragedy on TV, Andrews said "Chema, if you had something to do with this, I won't be able to bail you out this time. This is huge!" Chema just looks astounded. Wonder how they will tie that 9/11 incident to this series?
Also, rewind to just moments before when Andrews is trying to get Chema's attention while he is kissing on that girl, Chema asks her if she really is 18. Keep that scene in mind, as I think that, along with other scenes I have pointed out, will lead into something.
-VRO
Variopinta, yes Matilde knows that AC is alive but she is keeping it to herself because she is not a rat and the Casillas have done so much for her.
Plus, the plan is that if she continues to use Chema and Lai continues to use AC, two of the biggest Narcos, they will eventually be the two richest women in the world.
Also, kinda weird that Andrews came back with the DNA results stating that AC is dead.
Deb, you are correct. Macario is the same guy that AC eventually dealt with in the first season.
Tijeras called another jungle guy, I'm assuming Macario's rival. This will be good.
Thanks for refreshing my memory on the Chacorta anc Tijeras beef.
Wonder where Tijeras will end up now and whether Cabo will try to rescue him.
PS
Elsa's rude demeanor and cocky attitude kinda turns me on.
-VRO
"La Impostora", this novela is so wrong on so many levels, except one, they keep dishing it out, and with going into the final 10 shows, things are getting intense, this has moved into 'must see' tv for me. (and I don't think it would matter if you don't have a clue what's going on, just grab a cast list)
"La Prepago" , the morning novela has disappeared, to be replaced by action movies, the ones where everyone dies, this morning was about Vampires, who is Telemundo's morning audience?
" El Señor de los Cielos" has jumped ahead 5 years, don't miss a chance to see Rafael Amaya (Aurelio) in the jungle with glued on hair and beard.
"Avenida Brasil", I watched a travel show by 'Michael Palin' last weekend on Brazil, he was flying around with the garbage king, (traffic is bad so the rich guys use helicopters), talking about recycling, then the show moved on to the dump of "Avenida Brasil", with later behind the scenes while it was actually being filmed, guided by one of the actresses. So Brazil will also host the Olympics in 2016?
Thanks, Kelly! As Jean said, you did a lot with not too much.
One thing I'd add was Carlos, having Elena on the defensive about the Larrea Wineries sale to Jorge, told her to have a talk with "Camilita" about not being so haughty with him. Ugh. The uses of the diminutive are fascinating in Spanish. It's huge in Mexico. And the person hearing the usage can definitely tell what is meant by context and facial expression. Camilita from Carlos represents not very well repressed anger at her rejection of his overtures. He definitely lusts for her, and knows full well how out of her class he is. Ernesto uses "Elenita" all the time to Gerardo, but don't think he dares to do it to her face. He's really afraid of her and uses the diminutive to verbally take her down a peg or two.
And of course there's the common affectionate diminutive used by parents toward children, siblings, etc.
I gotta say the actor playing Carlos was definitely paying attention in drama school when they worked on "the smirk".
I can't tell if the writers are trying to tell us that Luz Marina is a fraud, as Eileen thinks. Or, since we're already in paranormal territory, whether we're to believe she actually did get a "vibe" about violent death from Esteban.
Yes, Andrews definitely told Chema that if he was mixed up with dealing arms to Al Qaeda (not mentioned by name - just "those guys" seeing the towers collapse) he could not do a thing to help him. Chema looked worried.
I was OK with the five year jump. But, sheesh, Amaya is sporting the worst fake beard since Pablo Escobar. And I find it hard to believe he and Mónica look like a happy, outdoorsy couple. Surely by now Aurelio would have hooked up with a tasty revolutionary babe, and Mónica would have gone after him with a machete.
Beto, Beto. I hope your tears only mean you miss your father and not that you have any intention of taking Turco's place. Please!
Of course the perfect ending for Aurelio would be murdered for revenge by Cabo. But it won't happen since I think Amaya is already under contract for a third season. I think this will not be a good idea. I think they'll wear out the concept.
Anybody else find it weird how AC reiterated to Ximena how they weren't together anymore? As if he was dumping her. Dude, she broke up with you!!
Byway, does that mean they will be getting a divorce?
-VRO
Thanks, Kelly for your recap! (And also to Jean for the correction). I think I scrolled down too far.
Also, thanks Novelera for the discussion of diminuitives. I haven't studied them yet so I was only vaguely aware of their use (i.e. to show endearment or affection), not as an insult. Funny because I think the actor who plays Carlos is very effective as "creepy and annoying". Being total opposites, I can see how she'd want to put an end to his offensiveness. Unfortunately for her he has a history of not taking no for an answer (i.e. her mom/Mondriana). And to think "Monica" senses danger to her daughters yet doesn't realize the real threat is from the same creep who assaulted her.
I've only seen about 5 novelas but I've noticed that the protagonists are always served time despite their innocence (somewhat). I'm hoping that Andriana doesn't pay for Mondriana's mistake because they could certainly accuse her of fraud, among other things.
spanish student
VRO- Totally agree about Aurelio's arrogance when "dumping" Ximena. Pretty sure it was over for good when she left him with another man. Jerk. I was kinda hoping he'd get mad and hit her in front of the children. That sounds horrible, but at least then they'd know who he really is.
Do they need to get divorced? He's dead after all. Anything he does to oppose her will reveal his non-dead status.
EN OTRA PIEL
Thanks everyone for approving the recaps. Now will someone please beat that smirk off Carlos's face already? I'm sure he'll be around for awhile and that the brothel will come back, but boy I want to see him suffer.
Kelly
Kelly, I also thought Carlos and El Pachuco would be opening up another brothel. But the two poor girls they brought up (presumably in the Larrea Wineries truck, although they didn't show it) were sold to the gringo who runs the nudie bar/prostitution ring. The latest is their plan to kidnap undocumented women from the barrio, so I don't know if they plan to open their own establishment like they used to have in San Diego or sell the girls with lower expense to the same gringo.
Kelly, belated thanks for a recap that was a lot more interesting than the episode. I especially enjoyed your snarky remark that when Rod gives Diego another book to help him with Adriana, "All the well-educated and licensed shrinks in LA are worried about their livelihood."
BTW, I think Diego did see Mondri and Gerardo kissing. I think that's part of what prompted him to come to the door, but the snapped twig or whatever it was that made the noise made them stop and he left.
I enjoyed Eileen's toying with the medium. But I have the feeling that Selma is going to get sucked in. And, like novelera, I keep wondering whether the writers are portraying Luz Marina as a fraud or as a plausible part of the supernatural world on which the story is premised.
Thanks, Hombre, for another very helpful recap. I think I'm having considerably more trouble figuring out what's going on in Señor 2 than in Señor 1.
I was pleased that Beto made it safely to Spain. And then suddenly it was 5 años después. Huh? I find it almost impossible to believe that Aurelio and Mónica could last together or separately for five years in the jungle. And even in the jungle, he's able to learn his son's whereabouts. My beanie refuses to stay on.
I just hope that when he reads his father's letter, Beto knows and remembers what happened to his father's once trusted right-hand-man Turco (before he lost his right hand).
En Otra Piel – jueves
In Napa, Elena and Jorge chit chat. Elena tells Jorge how devoted she is to working at the winery and wants to continue even after it is sold. He compliments her on her devotion to her job and to her mother. Elena asks Jorge if he knows who her father is. He hesitates but then says that her mother has to tell her that.
Marta finds Gerardo in his room. She is surprised that he left the hospital but he says that he couldn't stand being there another night. Marta examines the wound. Gerardo admires her medical skill with and she replies that she was a nurse before coming to US. He asks her to help him get better. She agrees and refuses payment for services outside her job description. She mentions that she hired a new gardener. He asks her to keep his "accident" quiet. She replies that her lips are sealed. He asks if she thinks someone in the house is responsible for the weird things that have happened. She that that is impossible. She vouches for everyone in the house and can’t imagine who on the outside could do such things.
Diego is working in garden and he and Mondriana see each other.
Susanna tells Jennifer that she saw Gabriel leaving her room. She tells Jennifer about the incident where Gabriel was in Elena’s room and got booted from the estate. Jennifer replies that she has already been told about this. Susanna suggests that Gabriel had not told her whole truth about it.
In Napa, Elena tells Emiliana and Camila about Gerardo's "accident." Emi wants to go back to LA with Elena. She finds the wine festival boring. Elena agrees. Elena tells Ernesto that she has calmed Raul down and can go back home.
Mondriana is rummaging around in the safe in the secret room and gets all woozy. (Did she touch the dije?) She staggers out and sees Adriana next to her reflection in a window. Adriana demands her body body back - Mónica asks for more time. Adriana's spirit calls to Diego who is working nearby but he can’t hear her. Mondriana runs away from the reflection yelling, “no! no! no!” sees Diego, faints and falls into the pool. Diego rescues her. He gives her mouth to mouth and she reacts.
Selma’s program about whether it is possible to communicate with the recently dead. She invites her viewers to call in if they have achieved this.
Valeria is depressed. She tells Maite that Diego has gotten another job in the house where Mondriana works. Anselmo shows up to warn the girls to be careful when they are outside. Two local girls who worked in a factory have disappeared and it appears that they were kidnapped. Valeria instantly becomes a basket case. Maite suspects that Carlos Ricalde might be involved.
Pachuco tells Carlos/Raul that the clothing factory in the barrio is a gold mine. All the workers are undocumented and there are a variety of goodlooking women there. He has already sold the two he kidnapped.
Diego carries Monica to the guesthouse. She lies on the bed, unresponsive with her eyes open. Marta has heard the commotion and comes with Susanna to see what is going on. She sends Susanna to get some alocohol.
A caller to the program tells Selma that she contacted her dead husband through a wonderful medium. Eileen is watching the program while she is being made up. After the show, she meets up with her mother. She asks Selma to tell her whether she is trying to contact Esteban through a medium.
Mondriana wakes up. She refuses medical attention. Gerardo has intercepted Susanna with the alcohol and is sloooowly walking to the guest house where Diego is still with Mondriana. Finally, Gerardo knocks on door of the guest house. Mondriana asks Marta to tell Gerardo that she is sleeping. Marta leads Gerardo away from the guest house. She tells him that Mondriana didn’t faint. She tripped and fell in the pool and she’s fine. It’s he who needs to rest.
Maite tells Anselmo about what happened to her, Mondriana and Valeria in Mexico. He says that he was always told such things were the woman's fault, dressing provacatively, etc. Maite is outraged and asks if he is a “Trogdolita,” a “caveman.” Anslemo replies that now he knows better and only wants to protect her and Valeria. Maite surprises him a little reward kiss.
Diego has changed his tactics with Mondriana now that he thinks she is suffering from multiple personality disorder and hasn’t just dumped him for another guy. He offers to help her go to a doctor. He understands that she doesn't want Gerardo to see them together. He says he will do anything for her.
Gerardo’s lawyer comes to see him with the documents for selling the winery. Raul/Carlos gets $10 million in the deal but the lawyer is concerned he won't be satisfied with that. If he doesn’t cooperate, that could mess up the deal. Jorge calls Gerardo for the status of his offer for the winery.
Diego leaves the guest house. Mondriana sees Adriana in the mirror. She begs for more time to help her daughters and punish her murderers. To the accompaniment of very dragmatic music with a choir, Adriana’s ghostly hand reaches out from the mirror. Mónica seems to be drawn toward it. She almost touches it when she flashes back to Elena’s threats against her daughters when she was being murdered. The moment passes and Adriana is gone again (but for how long?).
Maite comforts Valeria
Raul tells Pachuco that Gerardo and Elena want him out of the winery business but he has other plans.
Diego meets Vicky.
Emi comes home from Napa and hugs Gerardo. She tells him to get rid of the gun. Her mother never wanted firearms in the house and neither does she. Gerardo asks where Elena is. Emi replies that she went to the hospital.
Elena goes to hospital and finds an empty bed. She is nasty to the doctor who informs her that Gerardo left the hospital against medical advice.
Mondriana tells Selma that Adriana is trying to get her body back.
thanks so much Jean!
you always seem to catch the little things that I miss, like the conversation between Maite and Anselmo.
Adriana didn't look happy.
Geraldo and Elena seem to be moving apart and acting more and more without consulting the other, which might work to Carlos' benefit, (I don't suppose he could he keep his tongue in his mouth)
wow, $10 million for Carlos, even if Jorge ends up with the winery, Geraldo/Elena will have pulled out over $30 million from the business.
so let's see, the pervo judge must have given Carlos control of the shares of the business he wrangled from Geraldo/Elena, and Carlos cemented the deal by killing him, hmm, but for now until the paperwork goes through doesn't Geraldo own it all, and when it does will Elena then get her cut, (or is their marriage part of that deal), anyway, how will they ever sell the company without revealing the true owners to a shrewd guy like Jorge, and boy wonder assistant Ricardo.
ah and I was trying to remember why Carlos is in L.A. to begin with, it's to find Adriana, right?
Thanks, Deb.
The pervo judge put the shares in Carlos' (fake) name so that he wouldn't appear to have a beneficial interest in something he was ruling on as a judge - a big conflict of interest.
I guess Carlos and Gerardo signed papers transferring the share of the winery. All that stuff has become a bit hazy. I don't think that it has been made clear whether the probate of Mónica's estate has finished.
I seem to recall that Gerardo and Mónica signed some kind of side deal dividing up the 70 percent of the remainder of the winery business.
And yes, I believe Carlos came to LA to find Mondriana to get revenge for scarring his face and burning down the San Diego brothel, among other things.
thanks Jean!
and Geraldo is telling both Monica and Elena that he wants to sell the winery, get the money, and go far, far away and live happy ever after, so can we assume his real plan is only for Monica and that he may intend to leave Elena high-and-dry, without a penny, wow, that would be quite the storm.
Thanks so much, Jean. Loved all the details, especially since I had a DVR hiccup. My DVR is behaving like a temperamental old person with early stage dementia. Sometimes it's right on, and other times...not so much. It thinks recording World Cup games at 11:30 AM, while I'm at work, is too taxing. Thus it is hit and miss for the early East Coast time showings of the novela while I'm still in traffic on the way home from work.
Anyway, I missed the first 20 minutes and was grateful for the recap.
Thanks for reminding me that "Raúl" is legally OK with having 30% (except for the fake name, of course) since it was never really in Judge Pervo's name.
Diego was a lot less annoying last night, now that he's decided to stop pressuring Mondriana.
I know he's not going to do it, but it makes no sense that Carlos wouldn't want to cash out for $10 million for a share that he doesn't even really own (fake name) and just concentrate on kidnapping young women. But there's sure to be fireworks over this. I'm surprised Elena hasn't contacted the Doggy Gang to whack him.
Yes, Elena got a document signed by Gerardo that gives her 50% of everything. Of course, Camila and Emiliana know nothing about this.
I was hoping the scene in the Guest House with the extended hands might mean that Adriana understood what Mondriana was telling her: just be patient and you'll have your body back. Probably not. She's right, though, Elena has to be dealt with to be sure the girls are safe.
Not much time to write today, but here are a few things:
Ignacio gets Leonor a new trial. She says she's about ready to escape. He says if this trial doesn't work, he'll even help her escape.
Victoria's father Pedro sort of wants her to be with Ignacio, but at this point their relationship is not romantic (he likes Leo). I think all of them back this guy Juan for governor. Of course, Elsa, losing in the polls, hates Juan, and tells Chema to KILL him.
Rutila is a bit of a brat, but she has a nice religious boyfriend. Her cousin Victor is snobby (he's rich). Chacorta won't let Matilde have Carlitos at all (he's mad since she left). Mati is blackmailing a local official (caught by her cameras) into special perks for her brothel.
Bert is comin home to the US.
Ximena's helper in the children's center is named Santiago, and wants to be more than friends. She's hesitant, telling him she was married to El Señor de los Cielos.
Macario, AC's paramilitary guy, wears a beret. Chema's paramilitary guy wears a straw cowboy hat with the sides pushed in. He's also more ripped than Macario. He and his guys are planning to attack Macario and AC.
Monica gets jealous of a girl soldier, Dolores, who has attracted AC's roving eye. Monica ties her up at the river, and invites AC to see. I think she wants him to kill her as a sign of loyalty? But the paramilitary guy is watching!
Also, the whole point of the 9/11 thing was that now the US will be watching airplanes closely, so AC wants to suspend all shipments. Reckless Chacorta doesn't. AC is also trying to work with the Venezuelan army, since their new leader (Chavez) likes the Colombian rebels.
I don't think they ever mention Chavez by name, though. AC is working with a general in the Venezuelan army.
Thanks, Hombre. That was a very interesting episode and, for a change, focused more on interpersonal issues and less on firefights!
Wow, Elsa Marin is bad to the bone now. I thought that Chema's masseuse gave her a "happy endings" and Chema knew about her proclivities. [Not that those proclivities are what makes her a bad person!] I also thought maybe Lucila, her slave who betrayed Leonor, was getting sick and tired of her. I got a hint she didn't want her to touch her.
That was quite the interesting scene when Macario, Aurelio, and some other guerillas bushwhack their way to Venezuela and Aurelio has a bold conversation with an actual general in the Venezuelan army. I was rooting for him to tell Aurelio to take a flying leap, when he folded.
Chema's guy in Colombia seems much more evil than Aurelio's. He appears to actually be trafficking for himself and threatens his guys before he has them do his bidding.
I was afraid of this. The actress portraying teenaged Rutila is just as insufferable as she was in Pasión Prohibida.
Also, I didn't get the impression that Victor, Jr. was snobby. Alba said to Chacorta that she was glad that Victor Jr. took after his mother (the deceased schoolteacher) instead of Chacorta! He seemed like a nice kid to me, affectionate with Carlitos. And, Chacorta made the comment that Rutila got most of her genes from Aurelio. We saw her strong link with her father when she was younger. And Chacorta commented that she's becoming a bit of a scandal in the town.
thanks so much Hombre, I hope you don't feel obligated to comment, but I sure do enjoy reading what you write.
I'm lost on the political stuff, but I thought I heard that Elsa/Juan are running for municipal president (I would imagine of Guadalajara ??) and the largest city and seat of that muni is Guadalajara (where the Mati/Lai house of secret cameras is located) and I'm guessing Mati was leaning on the mayor of Guadalajara, because she wanted some of the local codes changed to suit her. (but I may be wrong)
has anyone said what the youngest daughter's name is,
and was that her hanging out with Rutila?
and where is Ponte?
I think (from the imdb cast list),
Tostao Yepes is the other jungle leader,
and the Venezuelan guy is General Oswaldo Montoya
btw- the synopsis at the wiki site may have spoilers so you might want to skip that,
and I think tonight's show is number 20.
The youngest daughter is Luzma (Luz Marina). She's too young to be interesting. Ponte should still be in jail, since he was in for 15 years (I think). And Matilde wanted to keep her club open later but wan't allowed. Stupid codes preventing her from getting more blackmail opportunities.
Hombre- Thanks for the hat clarification on the paramilitary guys. That'll make it easier to tell them apart. And thanks for telling us what happened with the airplanes the other day. I couldn't tell what exactly was happening.
So in five short years:
-Rutila has become a bit of a hussy
-Her boyfriend wants to wait to have sex until they're married (which will be awhile because aren't they only about 15? QTH, boyfriend?)
-Victorcito is either gay or headed for the priesthood (or both). Chacorta said something about him not having one single girlfriend, so I'm assuming here.
-Heriberto is all mature, you can tell from the beard
-Aurelio and Monica are still freaks, and Aurelio needs to learn about beards from his son
-Alba still loves her sons for some reason and I was hoping Matilde would smack her back. She deserves it for acting upset at what they do for a living and not doing anything about it. Can't be pious while living on drug money, Alba.
-And Andrew's accent hasn't improved in the least. After five years. Linguist, he is not.
Kelly
Great recap, as always, Jean. Thanks very much. I hope you have a great time in Spain. I wish I could offer to take one or more of your recaps while you're gone, but too much of the telenovela goes right by me. I had hoped that by now my Spanish would be adequate to do this, but it's simply not. Sigh.
Many thanks, Hombre, novelera, deb, and Kelly, for your helpful remarks about last night's episode. I especially appreciated Hombre's differentiating between the paramilitary guys' hats. I'm finding it hard to figure out who is who.
I don't have a good feeling about Beto's return to the States, esp. after Aurelio killed Cabo's son.
Kelly, it's true that Andrews' accent is pretty awful, but he nonetheless speaks with a fluidity that I envy. We never see him tripping over a verb tense or fumbling to find a word. I'd trade my better accent for his fluidity any time.
I had a different interpretation of the plans of Rutila's boyfriend. He met her in the church with the ever-present telenovela candles burning. I thought he was planning to do one of those do-it-yourself weddings telenovela characters sometimes do when they can't get permission from someone to marry and they marry themselves. And then they'd move right on to the wedding night on one of the pews! I could be wrong. Maybe the guy really is planning to wait for the priest to do the job.
Jean, thanks for the recap.
Valeria is now one of my least favorite people. I empathize with her slow healing process and attraction to Diego (protective male figure) but she's just too weak to be taken seriously. I hope the writers spice up her childlike character with a little wisdom and confidence. She's gonna needed if her dream of opening up her own restaurant comes to pass.
It's great that Mondriana and Diego are trying to be at peace with one another but they should establish some ground rules such as not calling her Andriana and having the same story about their past relationship and breakup. Fortunately Gerardo was dereailed and didn't see Diego in the guest house.
A regular (clean) person would take the 30% and run however Carlos has dirt on these two and has even killed for Elena, so he'll certainly demand more.
spanish student
I was intrigued by Heriberto's speech. I guess the director didn't bother to have him pick up a little bit of a Spanish accent during his 5 years in Spain or else soften the clipped, norteño accent. Maybe that's the way the actor really speaks.
I also have a bad feeling about his coming back to México. He said he even has a job offer in Barcelona and plans to return there. But he's sure to get into his father's web somehow or experience revenge from Cabo.
Ernesto, Rutila's boyfriend, is that same little orphan that the Padre brought up. He tells Ruti they're going to "marry" themselves, they put necklaces on each other, and somewhere in that church, he becomes a man, she a woman. How nice. Next morning, Chacorta catches them outside, knows the score, takes Ruti home, and I think she lets it slip that Bert is coming back.
In the jungle, the mighty jungle, the lion sleeps...oh wait, Dolores is tied up, Monica dares AC to have his sexy fun with her right now, but some paramilitary guys are watching, and a shot rings out. Dolores survives, and later a guy comes to Macario's camp, wants to join up. He's secretly working for Tostao (Chema's guy). AC thinks he's lying, but Macario trusts him.
When Bert tells Ignacio he's coming back, Ig says you owe me, and I'll tell you how to repay me when you get here.
Leo's buddies in the jail want to escape, tonight, but she remembers what Ig said, and can't do it. She goes to her new hearing, and I think it's going to be decided by a majority vote of three jurors.
Monica tells AC she wants a baby.
Mati gets to sing onstage at her brothel/club with a famous singer.
Victorcito IS a nice boy. He may be gay, as someone asks if he likes guys.
Santiago can't understand why Ximena can't commit to him, since AC's dead, isn't he? Well, isn't he? Xime has to lie, say yes.
It does appear that Elsa is running for Mayor, not Governor. She wants Chema to kill her rival, Juan. Juan, Pedro and his daughter Victoria are having lunch in a restaurant. Juan says he wants Vicky to go into politics, to work with him, but she says she prefers law. Just then a sicario zooms in on a moto!
Another great recap, Hombre! Many thanks. That scene with Mónica, Aurelio, and Dolores kissing each other, etc., must have been fun for the guerrillas to watch. Me, not so much.
One point I'm not clear about. At Leo's re-hearing, in addition to the judge saying something about three people deciding Leo's fate, didn't the judge also say that Leo should be freed? Leo looked stunned, so it wasn't completely clear to me that I heard correctly, but her being stunned could in this case be the result of good news, not bad. I really thought I heard the judge say that Leo should be freed. (Of course, at close to 11 pm, it's always possible that I fell asleep and dreamt that, but....)
thanks again Hombre!
I was wondering if Ruti's boyfriend was that same kid (who I recognized earlier from "La Patrona"), is he related to the Padre some way?
yes I think Ruti told Chacorta, Bert is coming home and that there will be a welcoming party, and didn't the Padre look disgusted at seeing Chacorta and wondered how wanted criminals could just walk around like that.
it was Ruti that asked Victorcito if he likes guys, because she made a deal with Chacorta to hook him up with her girlfriends, in return for his silence.
the "jungle book" part of the story is confusing, I guess Lola and Francisco have to work hard on keeping their love life interesting, and Dolores looked like she was getting into it, but it seems Tostao drug along some other guy and the shot was him being killed, and the new guy he left, later went to a stashed radio and reported back to Tostao about the drug factory, and somewhere in there Aurelio meets with the Venezuelan General who outs him as the Senor de los Cielos, still alive. (are they moving their merc through Venezuela or are they walking back and forth just to chat?)
interesting that Tijeras seems to have the run of the prison along with a cellphone (any calls to PaPa), but along comes a new guy, and we see Ponte lurking in the background.
I think Leo's buddy in jail has spent her whole acting career in jail as those are the only roles I've seen her in. (and did someone say something about the supreme court) and Elsa hears about the appeal.
if I got this right, Mexico is divided into states, the states are divided into municipalities which contain various cities, so technically Elsa is running for presidente municipal, but her goal is to be governor of Jalisco.

and Chema gets info on Juan's security from his girl Matilde, did she also over hear something in his phonecall?
Deb, thanks for your excellent additions.
Juanita, I also heard the judge say something about Leo being freed, and she looked stunned. But I think he might have just said those 3 people will decide if you will be freed of all charges, and can leave with a clear record, or something like that. Her being stunned could just be due to the gravity of it all.
Its hard to keep up with so many storylines involved, but just a few clarifications:
Berto is returning to his hometown of Sinaloa in MX, not the US.
Rutila's boyfriend is Ernesto, the nephew of El Padre whom he raised. He was the little boy who looked up to the Narcos.
Hidario (or whatever his name is) is the guy who is infiltrating Macario's military to get the scoop back to his boss, Tostao.

Also, Dolores aka Lola is Monica's new name as Francisco aka Pancho is AC's new name. I don't recall what that girl's name is that Monica had tied up.

Gracias to Hombre & everyone else for recap & comments.
This is a tough novela to understand who is doing what to who. Then it reverses. My head is spinning.
AC & Monica are pretty much sickos, but definitely interesting.
Where is Cabo?
Variopinta, no one knows where Cabo is. We assume he is playing it safe and hiding out for his safety. Possibly planning a return? That will be difficult to do though since the only Cartels left are AC and Chema's and Turco is dead. He could rescue Tijera's but somehow he is working for Chema now.
-VRO
Cabo is pissed for the death of his son, so he will be plotting against AC. He is a Colombian, so it is only logical that he would go to Chema, who would now know that AC is alive. But since there is a season 3, they won't be successful.
Having a hard time getting my head around the 5 years later.
Rafael Amaya is from Sinaloa, so his norteño accent is natural. I can't find out where in Mex Ruy Senderos (Heiberto) is from. He is not bad looking but would look better with some chin hair, since it is somewhat receding. His birth date is 8/8/88, that's interesting, to me at least.
What I heard from the judge at Leo's appellate hearing was that by a vote that was won by three judges, Leo was cleared of her crimes and is immediately free. They just didn't show her walking out.
Yes, Dolores, and her nickname Doña Lola (which I've heard some of the guerrilleros calling her) is Mónica's nom de guerre.
Hombre, loved the "Lion Sleeps" reference. That song ran right through my head as soon as I read it.
Also, Aurelio told Macario that if the guy who pretended to be AWOL from the army and joining the guerrillas was an infiltrator, the bullet would be for Macario.
Since I do my summaries from memory (and my Spanish is still a work in progress), I often have mistakes (such as who Dolores is), and I am very grateful to the people who correct them. I view this board as a group effort, and everyone's input is helpful.
