TELEMUNDO Y MÁS: THE FRONT PAGE -- En Otra Piel ends tonight! Gran Estreno de Los Miserables and Señora Acero starts its first full week -- Week of Sept. 29, 2014

Finally (and it can't be too soon for some of us) En Otra Piel ends tonight (Monday). Tomorrow (Tuesday) at 9pm, Los Miserables, based on the 1862 Victor Hugo novel which, according to IMdb, has already been made into at least 14 movies, the earliest dating back to 1909,  4 TV miniseries, a musical and a movie of a musical gets a new life as a telenovela. At 10pm Señora Acero starts its first full week.

This is the place for comments and recaps of these novelas.

TELEMUNDO Y MÁS: THE FRONT PAGE -- El Señor de los Cielos 2 ends tonight! Last week of En Otra Piel, and Gran Estreno de Señora Acero -- Week of Sept. 22, 2014

Tonight, Monday, September 22, is the shoot 'em up final episode of El Señor de los Cielos 2.  What an extraordinary job Hombre de Misterio has done as a solo recapper for this one (with a little help from his friends)!  Want to know who will make it through to a third season?  You'll find out in just a few hours.

Then on Tuesday night, settle in for the first episode of the new entry in the NarcoHour on Telemundo -- Señora Acero.  Is anyone planning to watch this one?  Does anyone want to recap it?

As En Otra Piel enters its final full week, it shows no sign of hastening its stately pace.  Count on the usual top-notch recaps here.

After its final episode next Monday, September 29, En Otra Piel cedes its time slot to the relentlessly promoted Los Miserables.  Anyone interested?

Both these shows are in their final weeks, soon to be replaced by Señora Acero and Los Miserables.  Even if you’re not watching the novelas, it’s worth stopping by to read the remarkable recaps of Novelera, Jean and Kelly (En Otra Piel) and Hombre de Misterio (El Señor de los Cielos, II).

Have a great week!

Hola! Our two named novelas on this page, El Senor del los Cielos II and En Otra Piel just went to "ultimos capitulos." They will presumably be replaced by the two novelas being promoted on Telemundo: Los Miserables and Señora Acera.
Thanks to deb for posting a link to an English language article about Los Mis here .

ALL the Telemundo novelas will be preempted on Thursday for the "Premios tu Mundo" broadcast.

TELEMUNDO Y MÁS: THE FRONT PAGE -- El Señor de los Cielos II, En Otra Piel, et cetera, week of August 11, 2014

Here's your page for the new week, folks.

Many of us watched the chilling Pablo Escobar: El Patrón del Mal.  The telenovela inspired me to read Gabriel García Márquez's account of the kidnapped journalists' ordeal, Noticia de un secuestro and to compare GGM's version of events with those in the novela.

Recently, I came across a review of a novel that has just been translated into English but whose original Spanish version appeared in 2011:  El ruido de las cosas al caer by Juan Gabriel Vásquez.  The author -- as well as the narrator of the novel -- grew up during the bloody ascendency of Escobar.  The narrator was 14 in 1984, the year Escobar had Rodrigo Lara Bonilla killed; he was 17 when Guillermo Cano, the fearless editor of El Espectador, was slain; and he was 19 in the terrible year when the presidential candidate Luis Carlos Galván was assassinated and some time later, a commercial airplane was blown up, killing all the passengers on board.

El ruido de las cosas al caer feels like a very personal novel, but it is well-grounded in time and place; it may be of interest -- either in its original Spanish or in its English translation -- to some of us who are still trying to make sense of that terrible time in Colombia's history.  The opening sentence of the novel caught my eye:

"El primero de los hipopótamos, un macho del color de las perlas negras y tonelada y media de peso, cayó muerto a mediados de 2009."
(The first of the hippos, a male pearl-black in color and weighing a ton and a half, fell down dead in the mid-2009.)

The animal had escaped from Escobar's vanity zoo, Nápoles, and had been a menace to everything -- animal and vegetable -- around him.  The decision to kill him and then display his cut-up remains triggered a media circus in Colombia.  The writer uses this incident to draw his narrator's thoughts back to his own past and how the national trauma affected his life.

Interestingly, while author Juan Gabriel Vásquez lives in Spain these days, he spent some time as a reporter on the late Guillermo Cano's newspaper, El Espectador, in Bogotá earlier in his career.

You can get a sample of this book on Kindle, if you're interested.  I'd be curious to hear what you think of it.

TELEMUNDO Y MÁS: THE FRONT PAGE -- El Señor de los Cielos II, En Otra Piel, et cetera, week of July 14, 2014

As I am writing this, I see that we reached 200 comments by Sunday evening.  (We haven't done that in a while!)  Anyway, I decided to post early (Sunday night instead of Monday) and to give  Reina de Corazones its own page this week.  If the high volume of comments continues, then Jean and I  can keep the separate pages going.

While it was kind of nice to have our conversations crossing each other and for us to read over each other's shoulders on one page, at a certain point it becomes unwieldy. It began to feel as if Cielos and En Otra Piel were being drowned out.

So this is the new page for Cielos, En Otra Piel and any other Telemundo or Unimás show you feel like discussing.

Reina de Corazones comments and mini-recaps will be on a separate page.

Have a great week!

TELEMUNDO Y MÁS: THE FRONT PAGE -- El Señor de los Cielos 2, En Otra Piel, and TA DA! Reina de Corazones, week of July 7, 2014

Reina de Corazones starts tonight (Monday) at 8E/7C on Telemundo, and I have to say it looks like fun.  Eugenio Siller and Paola Núñez are the protagonistas, and -- deliciously -- Juan Soler and Catherine Siachoque are the main villains.    Enrique Iglesias sings the theme song, Bailando.

Here's a little bit about the story:

Reina (Paola Núñez) is a young dressmaker with a horror of a stepmother (Rosalinda Rodriguez, who owns this kind of role) and a jealous half sister.  Nicolás (Eugenio Siller) is alone in the world.  He earns a living parking cars, but he also knows his way around a poker table.  The two meet at the wedding of former porn star, Estefanía (Catherine Siachoque), a millionaire casino owner and soon to be a widow.   For Reina and Nicolás, it is love at first sight.

They decide to get married secretly in Las Vegas. But tragedy and malice (i.e. Victor and Estefanía) conspire to separate them.

Juan Soler in a World of Dazzle and Deception, Intrigue, Dizzying Wealth, High Fashion, Juan Soler amid Dirty Money and Dirty Diamonds, Dangerous Men and Fast Women, a World of Casinos and High Rollers, CIA Spies, Amnesia, Juan Soler, Mysterious Threats lurking in bushes, and lots and lots of Sexy, Pretty People -- what's not to like?  (Oh and did I mention Juan Soler?)

Note: There is a more extensive, although spoilerish and weirdly incoherent sinopsis on the Telemundo website.

Cast Descriptions based on information gleaned from the Telemundo website:

Paola Núñez is Reina Ortíz (Reina de Corazones/Queen of Hearts), a bright and creative young woman and a dreamer at heart who longs to meet her Prince Charming.  She's not hard on the eyes either (but you already guessed that, right?)

Eugenio Siller is Nicolás Núñez.  When he meets Reina, it is love at first sight.

Juan Soler is Victor de Rosas (El Halcón Negro/The Black Falcon).  He wears a mask of respectability.  In fact, his wealth and power and prestige are built on dirty dealings.  He has no moral limits.  None!

Catherine Siachoque is Estefania Pérez Hidalgo (Reina de Diamantes/Queen of Diamonds), a seductress and a woman addicted to diamonds.  She would do anything to win Nicolás's love.

Laura Flores is Agent Sara Smith (Reina de Picas/Queen of Spades), the head of the CIA.  Behind her stern facade, she hides a sad past.

Carlos Ferro is Lázaro Leiva, a man who has had a hard life and will soon come to know true love.

Gabriel Coronel is Francisco "Frank" Marino, an agent in the CIA.  He is the go-to guy for the toughest missions.

Geraldine Galván is Greta de Rosas, a young woman who lives like a princess until life teaches her a hard lesson.

Wanda D'Isidro is Susanna Santillán, a distinguished socialite and the ex-wife of Victor de Rosas.

Pablo Azar is Juan José "Juanjo" García, a Mexican immigrant who wants to better himself.  He adores women.

Paulo Quevedo is Isidro Castillo, a hitman who works for Victor de Rosas.

TELEMUNDO Y MÁS: THE FRONT PAGE -- El Señor de los Cielos II, En Otra Piel, et cetera, week of June 9, 2014

Is anyone else watching Metástasis?  The first episode of the Colombian version of the remarkable American drama, Breaking Bad,  aired last night on Univisión, Gala, and Unimás.  Tonight, it will be shown only on Unimás at 8pm Central (9pm Eastern) as well as 9pm/10pm.  I'm not sure if they will repeat the first episode in the earlier slot and then show episode 2 in the later time.

On Tuesday, it will settle into a regular 9C/10E slot.

I was very impressed with the quality of the first episode.  I'm not planning on recapping the show, but I might comment on it from time to time, and I hope some other people do too.

Enjoy your week!

TELEMUNDO Y MÁS: THE FRONT PAGE -- El Señor de los Cielos II, En Otra Piel, et cetera, week of June 2, 2014

Sometimes it's fun to look back and see what we were watching (and recapping) a year ago. In June, 2013, there was only one Telemundo y Más post a week and we were watching El Señor de los Cielos I! In addition, Pasión Prohibida and La Patrona were on. At the end of the month, we made the transition to Monday postings to better accommodate Friday recaps and comments. So thanks for looking back with me and now on to the comments for the coming week's shows.

Tonight Telemundo is dedicating its primetime slot to getting everyone hyped up about the Tuesday premiere of El Señor de los Cielos 2, which replaces Camelia.  That means fans of En Otra Piel (and La Impostora) will have to wait until Tuesday for their next novela fix. (Not that these shows are addictive or anything...)
