Lo que la vida me robó, ep. 170, Tues. 7/8/14: Ezequiel Basurto is one lucky bastard. So far.

The banner on the building promises Paz y Espiritu -- Peace and Spirit.

In this dive, alas, the peace is pharmacologically-induced.  As for the spirit, it's strictly BYOB (Bring your own Bible).

Padre Anselmo adds to the cache of pills under his mattress, then sits down heavily, a portrait of misery and exhaustion.  He looks ancient.  How long, we wonder, has he been fooling his captors?

The Mendoza Mansion glows rosy in the night.
Carlota, Montserrat and Alejandro sit within the beautiful family home and try to make sense of Ezequiel Basurto's strategic revelation.

Carlota is feeling guilty.  "Ezequiel is very angry -- and I don't blame him," she says. "I shouldn't have doubted him, much less in front of you.  But how was I supposed to know that Ignacio was referring to that when he said EZ was hiding something?"

Montserrat still looks worried.  "I only hope he hasn't been hiding anything else.  I'm grateful for what he did for Padre Anselmo, but I still don't trust him."

"So many questions will be answered when we talk to the padre," says Alejandro, allowing himself a rare smile.

He still can't believe Padre Anselmo is alive.  His mother will be so happy when she hears the news -- and so will Macario and Domingo.

The three share a moment of optimism -- little by little, everything is working out.

"I just hope that when Fabiola is arrested, she has the courage to confess to what she did," says Alejandro.

"We have to talk to her, Alejandro," says Montserrat.  "She is our sister."

"Fabiola was here earlier looking for Graciela," says Carlota.  She was quite upset when she heard that Gracie had left on a trip."

Gracie's travel plans are news to Alejandro.  "Where did she go?"

"To Italy," says Montserrat.  "Dimitrio told me.  She said goodbye to him, but not to me."

Wherever she went, Carlota hopes she stays there a very long time.

Montserrat thinks she should be getting home, but Carlota encourages her and Alejandro to go up to the bedroom to, you know, talk.   After all, it's still early and JL's goon has no idea that Alejandro is in the house.  Besides, she says with a naughty grin:
Ya sabes que siempre he sido la tía alcahueta, mi hijita chula.
(You know I've always been the "go-between" aunt, my darling girl.)

[alcahuete/alcahueta, more crudely, can mean 'pimp' or 'procurer,' or more benignly, someone who lends his or her services as a cover.   Interestingly, in Spain 'chulo' means 'pimp,' though here it means 'cute' or 'sweet.']

There's not enough Tequila in the world...
In another house in Aguazul, the atmosphere is decidedly less mellow.  José Luis, as drunk and damaged as he is, is still repulsed by María in her blonde hooker wig and Montserrat's most intimate items of clothing.  Though she has doused herself with Montse's scent, she seems unable to cover the stench of her own moral putrefaction.

¡Lárgate de aquí! bellows José Luis.  María must be sick!  What is she doing in his room -- in his bed! -- dressed like that!  She disgusts him!

She responds with that remarkable combination of calm persistence and fearlessness that has probably kept her alive this long.  She wants to know what Montserrat sees in him.  She wants to take his manhood for a test drive. She could show him a thing or two in bed.   She invites him to imagine that she is Montserrat.  She puts on a little girl voice: "I love you and I've always loved you."

"Get dressed and get out of here!"

"I LOVE YOU" she shouts, and then laughs loudly.

He waves a finger in her face and orders her to leave.  The more enraged he gets, the more she laughs.

Remember when we were both worthless slugs?
Adolfo sits down with Dimitrio in the cantina and orders a bottle.  They reminisce about old times and all the trouble they used to get into together.  They were like brothers in those days. Now everything's different.  Dim says it's not easy.  When he wants to do things right, they go bad.  He wanted to get married, he found the love of his life, and then -- just like that -- she was taken from him.  Adolfo listens, his face inscrutable.

[Nerfazos fly through the night air towards his pretty face on the flatscreen.  He seems not to care.]

Adolfo knows about Dimitrio's troubles. Lately he has come to  realize that Dim was his only real friend.

"You know why we grew apart?" Dim asks him.

Adolfo thinks it's because of Josefina.  No, says Dimitrio.  They parted ways when Adolfo chose to work for Pedro Medina and Dim enlisted in the Marina.  Adolfo admits he made a mistake back then, but he left all that behind him after he thought his sister had died.  He cut his ties to Pedro and went to Monterrey, and he never worked for him again.

[Lying desgraciado infeliz!  The mood on the Patio gets ugly for just a moment, but curiosity to hear the dialogue prevails over moral outrage.  Everyone leans in and listens hard.]

"I thought you were with Josefina all those years."

Adolfo sets him straight. "We just reconnected when we came back to Aguazul."

"So why did you come here?"

"To help my sister and my niece. I found out Nadia was alive and Pedro was holding her in his house against her will.  I couldn't abandon her."

"The police and the Marina think Pedro is dead," says Dimitrio.  "But I don't."

Neither does Adolfo.  And he is worried about the safety of Nadia and Victoria.  Can he count on Dim, as a naval officer, to help protect them? He can.

JL is collapsed into a self-pitying drunken puddle on the low steps downstairs.  María has changed out of her Montse disguise and packed up her gear, and now she is saying her mocking goodbyes, chiding José Luis for rejecting the chance to live out his Montserrat fantasy with her.
(Es una lástima que te hayas negado vivir esta fantasía conmigo.
Anyway, it's his loss. If he's looking for solace (consuelo),  [not to mention penicillin-resistant gonorrhea, herpes, and probably HIV] he knows where to find her.

¡Vete, vete, vete, vete de mi casa! moans José Luis from the floor, not quite propped up against the wall.  "Get out of my house!" He tosses down another shot.  "I don't want Montserrat to find you here."

"Do you know how Alejandro got hold of Ben's will?"  Now she is sitting on the steps beside him and she is using what she imagines to be her most seductive voice. "He had to spend a night with me."

"What do you mean?" says JL, still in a boozy fog, but his interest now roused.  "Alejandro slept with you?"

"You know what?"  María leans into JL's face.  "He is a real man.  That's why Montserrat prefers him.  LOOK AT YOU!" she shouts.  Then she switches down the volume and mocks him in a soft, sneering voice for not daring to get a taste of her.

"You know perfectly well that Alejandro and I have always been lovers," she says.  "He's a hypocrite at heart.  He wants to win back Montserrat, but he can't keep himself away from my bed."

"If what you say is true," says boozy, crazed JL, wagging in her face one finger of the hand that holds the tequila glass, "then Montserrat needs to know about it."

"Don't be unfair, JL.  If Montse finds out, Alejandro won't come to see me again. And for now, I'm content to be his lover."

Sofa Thoughts and the Joy of Secret Love
Montse and Ale are still together in the Mendoza house, back on the couch.  [After a romantic interlude?  Perhaps.]
"I feel like beating the snot out of that goon who follows you everywhere," Alejandro says.  "But don't worry," he reassures, her.  He's not going to do it.  Not yet.  He's enjoying their romance on the sly.  He kisses her and says with a smile:
Te voy a robar, mi amor.
(I'm going to steal you away, my love.)

He doesn't want to give José Luis time to figure out how to keep her from leaving him once his marriage to her is annulled.

Montse smiles at the idea.  "And how are you going to do it?  On a white horse?  That would be very romantic."

"Then watch for me out your window.  I'm going to steal you away while you're still my lover, even though the next day you'll be my wife before God and man.

They kiss sweetly

"I never know when you're telling the truth and when you're lying," JL says to María.

[Note to JL: If her lips are moving, she's lying.]

"No," he says. "I don't believe Alejandro is your lover.  No he's not."

"You should have slept with me.  You would have understood why Alejandro couldn't help himself, even if he is in love with another woman."

"Montserrat would never forgive that," he says.

"The problem is that Alejandro is never going to admit it.  And if you or I tell her, that fool will never believe us."

"You're right.  Montserrat needs to see it with her own eyes."

"So do I understand you right?  Are you finally going to have the guts? (Por fin vas a tener las agallas) I asked you to be my ally once before, and your honor wouldn't allow you to get your hands dirty."

"You know what, Maria?  Things are different now.  This time I'm prepared to do anything.  I'm not going to lose her.  And if Alejandro is sleeping with you, she has to know about it."

Maria tells JL to come see her the next day -- if he's not too hung-over.  She stands up and walks out.  Borracho, she mutters scornfully as she is leaving.  "Drunk!"

Ezequiel's feelings are hurt.  Boo friggin' Hoo.

He can't continue to share a bed with a woman who doesn't trust him.  She's not the only one who was affected by Robledo's death.  The two were working together to send Pedro Medina to jail.

What can Carlota do to make him forgive her?  She leads him back to the bed, sits him down and begins to massage his tense shoulders.  Por favor, perdóname.

You'd be so nice to come home to.  Not.

Montse returns home to finds José Luis hunched on the low steps downstairs, drunk and truculent.  Fortunately, Laurito is spending the night with Rosario and Alejandro, so the child is spared this sight.

José Luis dismisses the (remarkably incompetent and unobservant) bodyguard after receiving a report from him that all is well.

"How much longer am I going to have to put up with that man following me everywhere?" she asks him.

"Until the day you learn to respect our marriage," he says.

"Well there are only a few hours left before you have to let me go," retorts Montserrat.

"Did you know that Fabiola has been arrested and that she's in a holding cell at the police station?  It looks as if Alejandro is about to prove his innocence.  I can't believe it -- in spite of everything you have accused me of..."

-- he pauses to take another swig from the glass.

"...I haven't done anything to keep him from recovering his apellido -- which would make you his legitimate wife again."

Montserrat reminds him of one little detail he is overlooking.  "You threatened to kill him if he came near me."

The Love Song of J. L. Álvarez

"Alejandro will never love you the way I do, Montserrat.  I've always been faithful to you.  Me -- I'm the one who deserves you.  Me, José Luis Álvarez, I'm the one!"

Montserrat tells him quietly that there is no way he can keep her from leaving with Alejandro.

"I only hope that when you discover who he is and who I am, it wont be too late," he says.

"I know perfectly well who Alejandro is -- and I also know who you are."

A New Day

Candyland -- The Cafe
Montse smiles at Macario and Dominga and tells them it's a great day for her and Ale.  He has an appointment in court that may well resolve his legal issues.  And a person is about to return to Aguazul who may be able to testify in his favor.

Macario wants to know who that person is.  Montse teases him, telling him he'll have to wait until this evening to find out.  It will be a very nice surprise.  But she does confide the secret to Dominga.  She whispers in her ear:  "Padre Anselmo is alive!"

José Luis talks to Fabiola through the bars of her cell.

She begs JL for a glass of wine.  He tells her to get used to doing without.  Any time now, she'll be going to prison.  Fabiola doesn't care.  Her life is over anyway.   And it's not because she has to spend time in jail.

¿Entonces?

Fabiola tells him about finding her birth mother and the cruel trick that woman played on her.  "She abandoned me!  And now here I am, behind these bars, dying of pain."

"And who is that woman?"

"Your dear mother-in-law, Graciela Giacinti."

Still Poles Apart

Esme is moping around, ruefully rubbing her not quite flat belly,  when the doorbell rings.  It's Refugio.  He looks at her adoringly and tells her she is beautiful.  She dismisses his compliment and wants to know why he's there.  Does he want to see Angel?  He does, but he also wants to talk to her.

We hear an infant's cries.  Esme says the baby just woke up -- she'll go get him.

She returns holding the child in her arms and carefully passes him to Refugio.  Refugio sits and gently pulls the blanket back to see the lovely face of his son.  "I'm your daddy," he tells him softly.  "And even if we can't be together all the time, I promise to come to see you every day.  You and your mommy..."

-- and here he looks directly at Esmeralda.

"...are the people I love most in the world.  She's mad at me, but I know you're going to help get her to forgive me.

"Tell her that I can get up at night to give you your bottle, and that I want to change your diapers too.  I want to take care of you when you start to crawl.  I want to look after you when your mommy is tired and needs to sleep.  I want to come back to you and your mommy.  This is my house and you -- you and your mommy -- are my life."

He kisses Angel's brow and then looks pleadingly at Esmeralda.

If you love him, feed him.

Josefina shows up on Dimitrio's doorstep with a couple of plastic grocery bags.  She figured his fridge was empty, so she just bought a few basic things for him.  He's someone very important to her.  She knows he's going through a difficult time.  This is what friends do for each other, right?

If there's nothing else he needs, she'll be going...

He stops her from leaving by offering her a coffee.  While he is in the kitchen preparing the coffee, she looks at the framed photo of Dimitrio and Mónica.

Now we know: José Luis did drink María's Tequila-flavored Kool-Aid

Montserrat arrives at JL's office and asks to see Fabiola.  He wants to know why.  It's none of his business, she says.

JL tells her he already knows everything.  Fab just told him that she and Montserrat have the same mother.  As for the rest of what she said, it would be better if she told the story herself.

Now Alejandro enters the office.  "I suppose you're here to see Fabiola too," JL says.  "She's your half-sister, right?"

Montserrat turns to Alejandro.  "José Luis knows.  Fabiola talked to him."

This makes JL suspicious.  Have the two of them talked about this already?  [At this point, do you really care, JL?  Seriously?]  This forces Montserrat to fib that Dimitrio talked to them both individually.  She hopes he understands that she and Alejandro do need to talk to Fabiola together.

José Luis sends Montserrat to wait outside his office so he can talk to Alejandro alone.  Then he tells Alejandro that he is aware that he got an important piece of evidence to prove his innocence.

"That's true," says Alejandro.  "I'm a few hours away from recovering my apellido -- and my wife as well."

"How did you get Benjamín's will back?  Who had it?"

Alejandro seems puzzled and annoyed at this line of questioning.  "What do you care?  I did what I had to do to get it and now the judge has it."

"I don't know if you are aware of this, but I had to release Maria Zamudio."

"No, I didn't know."

The two men stare at each other.  Alejandro reminds JL that Montserrat is waiting for them.  "Let's go."

Can this marriage be saved?

Angel has finished his feeding and he's back in his cradle, asleep.  Esme rejoins Refugio in the living room.  She has
to ask him something, and hopes he won't say no.  Refugio springs to his feet angrily.  "Don't dare talk to me about divorce again!  I already told you I don't accept that!"

Esme shushes him -- he's going to wake up the baby -- and tells him to sit down.

He begs her to give him another chance.  Isn't she ever going to forgive him?  How many times does he have to tell her that nothing happened between him and Mónica?

She knows that.  And it's not about Mónica.  She'd like to forgive him -- he's the father of her child.  But she needs time -- she doesn't know how much.  And they both need some space to figure out whether they should stay together.

He doesn't need any space.  He is quite sure of what he wants --  he wants to be with her and his son.  And Angel deserves to grow up with his parents.

Esme doesn't want their son to be the only thing holding them together.    Refugio will always be Angel's father, whether or not they continue to be a couple. Maybe they love each other, but he needs to figure out if he really wants to be married to her.  His interest in another woman suggests he has needs she isn't meeting.   And she needs time to heal from the way he hurt her.

He'll give her time she asks for, but repeats that she is the woman he wants to spend his life with.

He tries to kiss her goodbye, but she turns her face away without even permitting his lips to touch her cheek.

Fina and Dim start to talk at the same time.

"You go first," says Dim.  "No you talk," says Fina.  She's listening.

"After...what happened, we're friends, right?" he asks.

"Yes, of course we're friends.  I understand perfectly you don't love me."

"And you don't love me, right?"

Josefina doesn't say anything, but moves her head in a way that could, in a certain light, be taken as agreement.  She chooses her words carefully.  "I am so sorry you lost the woman you loved most in your life," she tells him.

"One day I'll feel better.  Maybe."

He tells her he was in the cantina with Adolfo the night before.  Josefina is a little embarrassed -- and maybe flattered -- at the idea that the two men were discussing her.

"Adolfo has changed a lot," she tells him.  "He's risking his life to help Nadia and Victor get back together.  And you should see him with his niece.  You realize he's another boy."

"Does he treat you well?"

He does.  He goes out of his way to please her (se desvive por mí).

Dimitrio was worried that Adolfo would take advantage of her.  But he was wrong.  "He seems to be very much in love with you and I'm glad..."

--Although the look on both their faces is anything but glad.

"...and I hope you'll be very happy together."

Once she leaves he sinks down in weary misery.  He looks at the photo of him and Mónica and sighs.  But when his phone rings, he answers it professionally.  Whatever he hears gets his attention.  "I'm on my way," he says.  (Voy para allá.)

[Cue the Male Chorus of Doom]

Paz y Espiritu reads the sign over the low-slung colonnaded building.  Inside, Padre Anselmo is reading his Bible.  He looks up balefully at the visitor before him.

Buenos días padre, says Ezequiel Basurto.

¿Ya?  (Now? Is it time?)

¿Ya qué?  (Now what?)

EZ is clearly annoyed.  He isn't in the mood for cryptic exchanges with old men.

"You're the only person who ever comes to see me.  And as lonely as I am, your visits never bring me joy.  I'm waiting for the day you obey Pedro Medina's orders."

Ezequiel protests that he has never wanted to hurt him.  He tries to underline his good intentions by placing a reassuring hand on the old man's shoulder.  The priest recoils from EZ's touch.

EZ says with an air of someone who is reciting an often repeated refrain:

If I had wanted to kill you, you would already be dead.
(Si yo lo hubiera querido matar, ya estaría muerto.)*

*[Easy peasy, right?
Contrary-to-fact conditional:  If I had wanted to kill you (but I didn't), you would be dead (but you're not.)
Pluperfect subjunctive in the "if" clause, conditional in the "then" clause.]

The padre doesn't believe a word of EZ's story that he is protecting him.  "You're a murderer," he says "and sooner or later you're going to kill me."

But EZ has a surprise for the old man.  He is there to bring him back to Aguazul.  And no, he isn't trying to trick him.  He's prepared to return his life to him -- but on one condition: from this moment, he has to treat everything that he knows about Adolfo and EZ as a secret of the confessional.

EZ puts his lips to the priest's hand.  The padre pulls his hand away as if a drop of acid had touched him.

"What does it matter if I talk now? I couldn't save Alejandro's life!" he says scornfully.  "Ever since you told me he had died in that accident, I haven't stopped praying for your soul -- murderer!"

"But Alejandro is alive, padre, and he is waiting for you in Aguazul!"

The priest takes off his reading glasses and stares, uncomprehendingly, at his tormentor.

Dueling Miseries

A Tale of Three Sad Sibs (Four, if you Count Dimitrio)

Montse and Ale walk up to Fabiola and stare at her in her cell. She raises her mascara-smeared face to them.  What are they doing here?

"What are you going to say, Alejandro?  That maybe I've lost everything, but I've gained three siblings?"

"Maybe that means nothing to you, but to me it's important that you're my father's daughter."

"He lied, my father, says Fabiola.  "He never loved me, you know?   He dumped me in a boarding school and kept me away from him his whole life."

"He never loved me either," says Alejandro.  He always treated me like dirt (me trató con la punta del pie), like just another worker.  Maybe you got a hug from him a time or two.  I never did."

"But you have a mother who adores you.  My mother just threw me in the trash."

Fabiola directs her words to Montserrat:

"That woman who gave birth to us is the most disgusting woman I know."

"What did my mother do to you, Fabiola?"

"She asked for my forgiveness; she told me she had wept for me all of her life; she said she wanted to protect me so I wouldn't go to jail.  She manipulated me into transferring all my money into her bank account so Alejandro couldn't take it from me."

Padre Anselmo stands up.

"Please, don't deceive me anymore," he begs.   His
voice is breaking and he can scarcely get the next words out.

"Alejandro -- my boy -- he's alive?"

"I'm not lying to you, father.  He survived the accident.  And as I said, he just got back to Aguazul."

"But how is that possible, hijo?

"It's a miracle, Father.  Alejandro will tell you the details when he sees you.  What I can tell you is that he and Montserrat need you more than ever."

The priest gets on his knees and tearfully begs EZ to take him to him.  EZ touches the man's shoulder, and this time the priest doesn't flinch.  "That's what I intend to do," says EZ. "But you have to swear to me..."

--EZ reaches for the Bible on the arm of the chair.

" ...on this sacred Bible that you will keep everything you know about Adolfo and me under the secret of the confessional for the rest of your life."

"But my son, I..." begins the priest.

EZ's voice is harsh now and it cuts off Padre Anselmo's protest.  "That's my only condition. You decide."

Padre Anselmo takes the Bible in his hands.  Está bien, hijo, he says softly. "I swear to you."

EZ, satisfied, leaves the room to arrange for the priest's release.  Padre Anselmo holds his Bible and tearfully begs God's forgiveness for failing Him as a priest.

It was a trip, but not the one she booked on Expedia.com

Fabiola continues to tell her story to Montserrat and Alejandro.  "I was so excited about a trip we were going to take together.  We were going to Italy -- to the little town near Florence where she was born.  She told me she wanted to spend time with me so we could get to know each other. She told me that she loved me.  It was all a damn lie.  She robbed me of everything I had.  And then she left without me."

"I'm really sorry, Fabiola," says Montserrat, "but it doesn't surprise me.  I've always expected the worst of our mother."

"You don't know her, Montserrat.  She isn't the person you think.  She doesn't come from an aristocratic family (una familia de abolengo) and her parents aren't Italian."

"What are you saying, Fabiola?"

"According to Amelia -- and she knew her as a girl -- our grandmother used to go to Amelia's house to mend her mother's dresses.  Graciela is the daughter of a seamstress and she lived in a little tin shack on the outskirts of Aguazul.  Everything about her is false, Montserrat, even her name!"

"Amelia told you all that?"

"My godmother is the only one who really knows her.  The real name of the great Graciela Giacianti is Gaudencia Jiménez!"

Avances:

Padre Anselmo returns home, and Alejandro and Montserrat are back together; but a snake named María still slithers in the garden.

I haven't read the recaps or comments but I'm watching the show and am at the part with MDJL Maria and I'm getting sick!

Wonderful recap! I loved it! I'm applauding you Novela Maven! Your translations were perfect! Your side comments hilarious! I enjoyed this very much, thank you!

I'm so happy Padre is returning! But so disgusted with BM! I want to see her die a slow painful death! Sorry Carlos. I'm so sick of her obsession with Ale, he should get a restraining order! I just know she's going to plan the cliche scheme with JL where they're going to drug Ale and get him into a bed with her so Monse can "catch them in the act". Ugh! I just hope Monse sees right through it since they already know how BSC Maria is, (sneaking into the shower). My predictions are usually wrong but that's the impression that I got from the exchange between her and JL.

NovelaMaven, what a fun recap! Thanks!

Lines that made me laugh this early a.m.:
"Remember when we were 'both' worthless slugs."

"If he is looking for solace(not to mention penicillin-resistant gonorrhea, herpes and probably HIV) he knows where to find her."

Here's hoping:

Ezequiel and Carlota reconcile. Let her accumulate a few more happy memories before it all goes to you know where.

Dimitrio and Josefina learn how to ask and answer questions directly so that they acknowledge that they still love each other. They were just talking around the "love" issue and never really said anything again.

Padre Anselmo realizes that the only option to his being kept sequestered all of these years was death.

JL steers clear of any shenanigans with that crazy BM.

BM does something anything to take her out of circulation and put her in the same cell with Fabiiola.

Jarifa

Lily I think you are dead on with JL and BM planning something. JL didn't tell Montse he was faithful to her, discovering who Alec was vs him for no reason. He wanted to plant that idea so she would doubt Alec when something happens.

This comment has been removed by the author.

They've mentioned Gracie's real name enough times to make me think it's going to be important later.

I was laughing at Marias antics last night! Im glad Padre Anselmo is returning and i liked it when EZ "cursed" the Bible! Fabiola should just rot ,it doesnt matter if Monse ,Dim and Ale are her relatives ,she needs to pay for her crime. Gracie/Laurie is such a witch ugh ,this would be perfect punishment for her http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0IfXO1XFLMA !

Best line of Recap, so funny?

"She wants to take his manhood for a test drive.

NovelaMaven,
Once again you have outdone yourself. Thank you for writing this awesome and fun recap. I really enjoyed reading it.

My favorite was:
"Though she has doused herself with Montse's scent, she seems unable to cover the stench of her own moral putrefaction."

I am sick and tired of BM. And I agree with you Lily. BM is planning something and is apparently going to get help from MDA. No spoiler, but I too think that BM will do something to make Montse think that Ale boinked her. If something like this happens, I hope Montse sees right through it. Just the thought of BM seducing Ale is making me nauseous. I just hate it when BM tries to get close to Ale. Whenever BM sees Ale, she immediately tries to hug and kiss him. She needs to go and her anvil can't come quick enough. NEXT!

So happy to see the Padre. EZ is scum. Making the Padre lie, and also making Carlotta feel guilty. EZ deserves whatever is coming his way. I can't wait for the Padre to reunite with everyone in Aguazul tomorrow. Yay!

Another scumbag is Adolfo. He is totally lying to Dimi's face. I used to like him, but I changed my mind when he kept helping and sleeping with BM. The ONLY redeeming quality he has is his love for Nadia and Vicky. But that is not enough. No spoiler, but I will be surprised if Adolfo doesn't end up dead or in prison for life.

Dimi and Fina are in denial!

I don't feel sorry for Fabby anymore.

BM talks about herself like she is the greatest lover ever. She thinks that any man that sleeps with her once won't be able to resist her again. That reminds me a lot of Gracie/Guardencia. Hmm.

More to say, but I need sleep.

Off to bed...hasta pronto!

Great work,

My favorite line: Though she has doused herself with Montse's scent, she seems unable to cover the stench of her own moral putrefaction

I know that novela heroines are usually not allowed to do such things, but I still want to see Monse kick Maria across Mexico to the other coast. With her platform heels on. This nasty piece of trash has caused everyone more than enough grief.

I don't understand why Alejandro had to say to JL that he did what he had to do to get the will back. He could have just been up front with him about Monse getting it back from Gracie and sending it to him by way of Laurito's schoolbag. It has probably never occurred to him that JL could be in cahoots with Maria about anything, but if that's the case he still doesn't get the depth of Maria's obsession.

Both these guys know she's a sick bitch and when Alejandro finds out who knows she was the one who shot Monse he will kick him to Kingdom Come.

Oh, this was wonderful NM! I was giggling and parking the coffee throughout. This was the perfect episode to just let the snark fly, wasn't it?

"[Note to JL: If her lips are moving, she's lying.]"

You had so many perfect little quips today, but this one just hit me perfectly. There is almost a sadness in how delusional and desperate both JL and Maria are in thinking that somehow they still can win back the "Love" of two people they have lied to, mistreated and hurt. But for Maria, this borders on madness and I get the vibe she actually is beginning to believe her lies. That's her survival. There will be no redemption or happy ending for this woman. I agree, the two are going to pull some sort of cliché fake-out, but I would hope at this point, Monse would be on to whatever she sees or hears.

From a legal standpoint, if Gracie lied about who she was and never actually changed her name legally, would that falsify her marriage to Lauro and any other subsequent documents she put her hand to? That could be the reason why they are making such a fuss over her real name? That could cause a few repercussions for her I would think...

Fabs has done what she needed for the plot line. Now what? Still don't see any warm, fuzzy ending for her. And did anyone else get this weird vibe listening to a "married" couple talk about going to see their common "sister". What a family.

Let the setup to get Dim and Fina back together begin. Watching those two the last few months is like watching Cool Hand Luke "What we have her is a failure to communicate!" But I like it wasn't some huge falling into each other's arms...let it go slow. Fina is going to need her own time to recoup too soon I'm guessing. Adolfo is another one who hides himself behind his delusional "truths".

Cue the Kleenex tonight. The Padre is back!

BYOB...Bring your own Bible!...yikes, NovelaMaven, as usual, you started this recap off with a bang. My long-ago editor would have loved you.

Liked your contrast of Padre Anselmo's dismal, pill-strewn cell with the lovely, warmly lit home of Carlotta (and with cozy couple Montse and Ale snuggled on comfy couch). These writers DO love contrast, don't they?

And the Grammar Nerd lessons were outstanding. Very interested in the different uses of "chulo". I certainly did not know it had that connotation in Spain. One can certainly get into trouble in this language learning, no?

And "se desvive por mi". Appreciate the translation. Not familiar with that expression but it certainly sounds useful.

"Though she has doused herself with Montse's scent, she seems unable to cover the stench of her own moral putrefaction."

Powerful sentence, as was your riff on possible diseases resulting from a congress with Sweet Maria. [I know Carlos will forgive you. He does have a great sense of humor and that was so funny.]

And although EZ is pure scum, had to admire the way he played his hand with "trop bonne poire Carlotta". "This USED to be my room, this USED to be my chest of drawers, this USED to be my place, blah blah blah...", until she's practically down on her well-padded knees, begging him to stay in the bedroom. Well played, you murderous rascal, well played.

Always love your headings, but my favorite was that old Ladies Home Journal classic "Can this Marriage Be Saved". I used to read that religiously in my teen years and then scrutinize all the marriages around me to try and figure out if they were happy. [Did I miss my calling? Should I have been a marriage counselor? Actually, you have no idea how many times I have listened to unhappily married folks in my classes. Good thing I did all that reading.]

Saw the first part of this last night, but was so put off by the indefatigable Maria and the drunken souse José Luis, that I went upstairs to read instead (but in Spanish! in Spanish!)

Thanks, as always. A delight from start to finish.

NovelaMaven: I humbly and with great admiration, thank you for what I believe to be your finest recap to date. The quintessential recap. Period.

Forgive me for repeating this, but again, I was saddened and troubled by the episode - there was no joy, no peace, no light. Still, your penetrating wit and marvelous phrases transformed the hideous, twisted events into works of art.

"In this dive, alas, the peace is pharmacologically-induced. As for the spirit, it's strictly BYOB (Bring your own Bible)", "Though she has doused herself with Montse's scent, she seems unable to cover the stench of her own moral putrefaction" and "drunk and truculent" were only a smattering of my favorites. Your conversation translations were superb.

My heart broke for the dear Padre, the bewildered and swindled Fabiola and for Dimitrio and Fina who will not or cannot admit the truth. I gravely worry for Adolfo who has lost his soul and yet forges ahead in a vain effort to survive and protect. And yes, even for Maria, who while justifiably reviled for her insensitivity and cruelty, seems so bereft of any kindness that she must be pitied.

Lily, while I also suspect Maria will hatch some nefarious plan, I hope JL does not go along with her. I would like to see some semblance of the honor and dignity he showed early on be restored. His mewling and begging when he thought Maria was Monse was just cringeworthy.

Jarifa, loved your "Dimitrio and Josefina learn how to ask and answer questions directly so that they acknowledge that they still love each other". Yes, I hope so too...

I can't hate EZ. Perhaps it's because I believe he really loves Carlota, which proves for a murdering, lying snitch, he has at least one redeeming quality.

NovelaMaven, you have made my day.

Diana

NovelaMaven- BYOB!!! LOL! You started off the recap with this gem, and kept it up the whole way through.

Unlike many of you, I did not get the impression that JL would help Maria fake an affair with Ale. She was trying to bamboozle him, to get him to believe it. I think a more likely scenario is Maria on her own drugging Ale, and calling JL, telling him to bring Monse, and both Monse and JL being fooled into thinking Ale and Maria were getting it on. Monse would be devastated, and JL would be smug and able to say I told you so. Maria is planning on playing all three of them.

There will be so much joy for so many when Padre returns. I'm looking forward to it.

If Monse catches Ale (let's say drugged) and Maria in bed now (next episode or so), do you guys really think Monse would believe Ale capable or willing to sleep with his own half sister? Remember the famous shower scene at the hacienda?

Even though the previews showed a scene of Monse crying, we all know that the previews of the last episodes are deceiving.

Comments?

Victoria- His half-sister???

I agree that it would be really stupid at this stage for Monse to believe Ale would willingly get in bed with Maria. But tns are notorious for having the main couple act like jealous idiots, to the point of blinding them to logic. Many cases to be found in this tn alone. The other thing in Ale's favor, which neither Maria or JL know is that Monse gave Ale permission to sleep with Maria when she had the will. There is obviously now a 100% honesty policy between Monse and Ale.

Vivi:
Sorry confused Maria with Fabs. This novela has so many storylines going on, it's hard to keep up.

LOL! Victoria- I thought I had missed a big reveal in the last few episodes. :) Of course, there's plenty of time for more reveals.

To any Catholic (I'm only Catholic by marriage):

Why did Padre A. say he had faulted God after EZ demanded that the priest act as if his knowledge of what EZ and Adolfo had done was to be taken as under the secret of confession? Is it because the Padre didn’t follow proper Catholic procedures?

NovelaMaven - Superb recap and grammar lesson -- the best show in town. Maria's "moral putrefaction" was my favorite line too.

I vote JL won't help Maria with the setup and will be duped along with Monse and Ale. He seemed to buy Maria's story. If Monse stays with JL because of a fakeout like this, I'm done with her cause she should leave JL no matter what.

In other TNs I've seen, a priest leaves the priesthood or gets released by higher ups so he can divulge a secret from the confessional. I hope Padre Anselmo is aware of his options, but the poor man hasn't seen sunlight in years so maybe he's not thinking clearly.

EZ and Adolfo are so smooth. I can't believe I still have some good feelings left for them.

Victoria, I see the Padre Anselmo dilemma as a crisis of conscience because Ezequiel and Adolfo did not confess to him. They should not enjoy the immunity afforded by the confessional. Padre Anselmo is being forced to act immorally to gain his own freedom which does not square with his own ethics. So, yes he has "faulted God" by agreeing to lie.

Jarifa

Jarifa and Niecie:
Thanks for the clarification.
Victoria (Vikki)

Good morning everyone! Thanks so much Vikki, Lily, Jarifa, Nanette, Countx, AuntyAnn, Urban, Daisynjay, JudyB, Diana, Vivi, and Niecie for your wonderful and kind comments.

I confess that I found this episode especially hard to recap because there was so much conversation without any big reveals to keep us glued to our seats.

I did like the Crazy Tawdry Drunk interlude (Maria vs JL) -- I thought it gave the actors a great chance to show us what they could do. It was a well-written thread too, setting us up, but also keeping us guessing, about what is to come. In the end, JL comes to BELIEVE what María has told him. As many of you noted, the question now is whether he actively ABETS her or just guides Montserrat into seeing the TRUTH.

I adored the delicate minuet of Josefina and Dimitrio. We can only hope that our rather ruthless writers allow them to survive long enough to recognize what they feel for each other.

I loved the way Auntie "Alcahueta" laughed at herself and got Ale and Montse to join in the laugh.

How great to see Padre Anselmo again -- we were all longing for a wise elder. He swore on the holy book to keep silent about the killers. What decision will his conscience lead him to?

There is a lovely chapel on the grounds of the Mendoza mansion. Maybe he will spend some time there in prayer and meditation. (Hey, why not? It worked for the Great Graciela Giacinti, didn't it?)

Poor Fabiola. Doesn't she deserve a chance to wash her face?

ROFL @ "In this dive, alas, the peace is pharmacologically-induced.  As for the spirit, it's strictly BYOB (Bring your own Bible). " NovelaMaven, thank you for that and the recap. I missed the last 20 minutes or so of this episode.

So, there is still no sign of Pedro? Gracie has left. I wonder how long we will be waiting to have these two menaces make their reappearances.

Caryn

NovelaMaven, you've done it again! What an outstanding recap. I loved the following lines, they just made my morning:

"Though she has doused herself with Montse's scent, she seems unable to cover the stench of her own moral putrefaction."

"Nerfazos fly through the night air towards his pretty face on the flatscreen. He seems not to care."

"JL is collapsed into a self-pitying drunken puddle on the low steps downstairs"

"Anyway, it's his loss. If he's looking for solace (consuelo), [not to mention penicillin-resistant gonorrhea, herpes, and probably HIV] he knows where to find her."

"It was a trip, but not the one she booked on Expedia.com"

You have such a way with words!

JL is back to his whiny old self, just like in the beginning, but made much worse by his drunken state. If the people of Aguazul could see their Chief of Police in this state, he would get replaced, and it would be too bad because he has the intelligence and the skills to bring justice to this town if he would just let Montse go, get off the bottle and return to the JL Angelica loved. I truly hope he does not agree to be in cahoots with Maria.

Diana, I was blown away by your beautiful description:

"My heart broke for the dear Padre, the bewildered and swindled Fabiola and for Dimitrio and Fina who will not or cannot admit the truth. I gravely worry for Adolfo who has lost his soul and yet forges ahead in a vain effort to survive and protect. And yes, even for Maria, who while justifiably reviled for her insensitivity and cruelty, seems so bereft of any kindness that she must be pitied."

I'm liking Dim and Fina taking it slowly as friends. Hopefully they realize what their true feelings are by spending more time together. Padre A does have my pity, what a horrible way to live for 7 years, away from all those he loves and unable to live his faith and serve his community as he desires. Fabi also has my pity. She is aware of her fate, but what hurts her the most is her mother's betrayal. Perhaps if she spends time paying for her crime, she will come out a better person and able to have the family she always wanted with her 3 siblings.

Maricruz

Caryn and Maricruz,
Thanks so much for your lovely comments.

Caryn, you asked if there had been any word about Pedro. I found myself wondering if the phone call Dim received might have had something to do with him. We could tell from Dimitrio's face that SOMETHING SIGNIFICANT had happened -- we'll have to wait until tonight to find out what it is!

Maricruz, isn't Diana amazing? Were you following Amores Verdaderos here? Anita starting collecting The Wisdom of Diana and published excerpts now and then in a separate newsletter.

Daisy, this is not the first novela where someone had a sister from another Mister and a brother from another Mother. EPDA and TDA (same story) had this happen to the younger mutual half-sister to the two protagonists. As in this example, nobody knew until they were all adults.

Which is why Gracie was able to defraud Fabiola so easily, which is no more than that drunken cow deserved.

As to the ramifications of the discovery of Gracie's birth name, we can only guess until she turns up in the story again. I suspect Monse could go to a lawyer for advice about this (we need a good lawyer in this story now) and possibly get a court order to investigate it. If she never had her name changed legally she might not have had the right to inherit the Mendoza properties, so Monse and Dim would have to prove that they are the authentic offspring of the admiral (DNA test with Carlota unless there is a body to exhume). This could send Gracie to the slammer for a whole string of fraud charges nobody's thought of yet.

NovelMaven, you may be right about that phone call. Thanks! I am looking forward to tonight's epidsode.

Caryn

NovelaMav--Up to your old tricks again, turning in a superb recap, complete with enough turns of phrases and grammar to make any wordsmith and grammar nerd happy to be part of the Patio and at least within waving distance of you.

Fabiola, poor dear, finally got some of my overdue empathy. She is damaged goods and has bravely acknowledged it. It's sad that she believes her life is over and doesn't mind jail.

Did anyone hear when Fabiola mentions her's and Montserrat's mother's fake name, Giacinti, it came out sounding like Ya-Sin-Ti. How sadly appropriate, no? Maybe that is Amelia's last laugh.

Anita,

"Did anyone hear when Fabiola mentions her's and Montserrat's mother's fake name, Giacinti, it came out sounding like Ya-Sin-Ti."

Haha. Nice catch. No, I didn't notice. What did impress me was her clear pronunciation of GAUDENCIA which put the Laurencia/Gaudencia confusion to rest definitively.

NovelaMaven
Member, The Crackpot Theorists™

Thanks Novela Maven, fine job indeed!

I know the general consesus is that Gracie is Gaudencia. But on my captions (spamish) it said Laurencia and it still sounds like Laurenica to me. Depending on what her name really is, could determine her true orgins. Perhaps I feel that way because I named my daughter after her dad by adding an "a" at the end.

Novella Lover
--Loved your reference to "spamish" even if it was not your intention! I heard Fabiola pronounce it Ga-u-dencia, very clearly last night. You can't trust captions 100% of the time.

I thought the padre said he had FAILED God, not that he FAULTED God.

Pedro kinda reminds me of The Joker,i bet even he could give him a run for his money! Hopefully that when they catch Our Ghost Rider Pedro( He must be alive, anyone can live a shoulder wound) that he rots in all the Hells possible, not even hit by lightning is good enough for him..

Thanks Novela for the fun recap. And UA for yours yesterday. And all the other recappers who do such a great job of keeping us in the loop.

Some thoughts:

I would like Fab to be redeemed. Ale and Mons would be willing to give her a chance.

I'm still fascinated by Maria. She is completely bonkers.

Esme is one smart woman to want to give them both a chance to re-evaluate their marriage. Ref needs to think about why he got so wrapped up in his Monica crush and Esme needs to see if she can forgive and what she really wants out of life for herself.

Nanette

Anonymous @01:59:00: I'm with you, I also understood that Padre A apologized to God for failing him.

As for Gracie's real name, the night Amelia said it, it was very hard to hear whether she said Laurencia or Gaudencia, but I agree with NM. Fabiolas pronunciation was really clear. She said Gaudencia.

And no NM, I didn't catch AV. Although it looked good, I try to do one at a time because with 4 kids, I barely find enough time for one. Lol. At that point I was already watching PEAM. But Diana always has something beautiful to say. :-)

Maricruz

Thanks so much for your recap NovelaMaven. You definitely created great lemonade out of a lemon type episode.

EZ continues to slide by. I am anxiously waiting for Pedro to show up (unless he tries to harm a female on the show which he is likely to do) and have he, EZ, and Adolfo take one another out.

Dear Novela Novela:

This was one of your masterpieces.

Some of my favorites:

"In this dive, alas, the peace is pharmacologically-induced. As for the spirit, it's strictly BYOB (Bring your own Bible).

"There's not enough Tequila in the world... In another house in Aguazul, the atmosphere is decidedly less mellow. José Luis, as drunk and damaged as he is, is still repulsed by María in her blonde hooker wig and Montserrat's most intimate items of clothing. Though she has doused herself with Montse's scent, she seems unable to cover the stench of her own moral putrefaction."

That whole PP is wonderful. I read it aloud just to savor it.

"Remember when we were both worthless slugs?"

This line made me think of running into a former lover you may not remember fondly. "Why was it I was with you???"

and:

"I never know when you're telling the truth and when you're lying," JL says to María.
[Note to JL: If her lips are moving, she's lying.]

Maria has such a vile character (So sorry, Carlos, but it must be said). I, as a viewer, cannot tell sometimes what is true, and I have the backstory!

This expressed my feelings exactly:

"Ezequiel's feelings are hurt. Boo friggin' Hoo."

EZ is SUCH a sleazebag. He is a dreadful, slimy, craven man. Can you tell I do not like him?

There were so many wonderful turns of phrase, I am just delighted by this recap.

Thank you, dear Novela Maven, for the care and attention you bring to all of your work. I am so delighted when you let the fangs show a little bit.

Elna June

Still a little too soon for that. We have 26 more episodes to go.

We know that all the good females will be in danger at least once each before this is over (Monserrat at least twice). The villains typically don't buy the farm until the last two episodes.

Nanette:
I agree with you regarding the emphasis on Gracie's name. To whom is she going to be related? Sould she, say, be Juventino's sister and Maria's aunt?

That would be a twisted outcome.

Victoria: Ale tried to sleep with Maria throughout their shared exile from Mexico, lo these many months ago. It is not out of the realm of possibility if he was, say, out of his mind. Hallucinogens come to mind...

I do not think Maria has been shown to be anybody's sister; at least not yet. We saw her Dad and her uncle, that's why I wonder if she shares blood with Graciela, since we know so little about Gracie's mother or Maria's.

Novella lover: I still keep hearing Laurencia, too. Must be a problem with my aging ears.

And Nanette< Maria fascinates me too. She is such a beautiful woman and the actress is so good as being BAD. Hee hee.

EJ

Hi everyone, this just popped into my head and I had to share even if I get booed. Wouldn't it be something to see Graciela on plane sipping wine or champagne, then the cameras show person sitting next to her and its Peddy!!!!! I am pretty sure this is not a spoiler, but if happens pls dont think I spoiled. It will be far fetched coincidence.

NovelaMaven what a great recap! I have to confess, I think I might enjoy reading the recaps more than watching the show most nights!

No time to comment right now, but had to thank you. Fabulous (not to be confused with Fabiolush)!

Rebecca

NovelaMaven and Urban A from yesterday---This novela gringo appreciates the recappers so very much---ALL OF THE RECAPPERS. Before I found Caray, Caray! I would watch the shows and then ask strangers on the street who looked Latino if they saw the novela last night. If they answered yes I would plead for an explanation of what transpired the night before. Sometime this worked and sometime it didn't, but I tried. Then I found the Caray blog. I knew that the recappers put forth a special effort to translate these shows but I didn't realize that it was six hours worth of effort. NM, Urban and the rest of the recap team, put the gringo on the list of people who REALLY, REALLY appreciate your work and effort that you put into these novela recaps.
the gringo

Yeah Gringo ,writing Recaps is not as easy as it sounds,it even required like 5 hours to even write one, much less to write them everyday! Now i understand why there is a schedule in the first place ,because for the same person writing them all is extremely draining and as you i herebly respect the work of our writing "Gods" !

HHahahaha. "Doesn't Fabiola deserve to wash her face??""

Hilarious. I am so hooked on you guys, I neglecting my job finding and selling homes, housework, but it is so enjoyable!!!! I gotta stop my own obsession with Caray Caray which is composed of smartest and wittiest folks in the universe.

EJ--Your quote, "Ale tried to sleep with Maria throughout their shared exile from Mexico, lo these many months ago. It is not out of the realm of possibility if he was, say, out of his mind. Hallucinogens come to mind..."

Yes, hallucinogens do come to mind, but also a sex change--it was Maria who tried to get Ale to sleep with her during their "honeymoon" trip outside Aguazul.

She was greatly perturbed to have been treated as an untouchable sister even though she shared his bed but never mentioned it to anyone (all the more to make JL *think* they were lovers).

We on the Patio thought he was too angry and hurt to get it on with her.

Gringo, you so funny. I can just picture you asking latinos on street if they saw the novella. I know how you feel. There are a couple of fellas that call me (latinos) I try to get them to watch the novela cause it's so good. If they dont, I get upset. Can you believe? I know its not right, but I can't help it. Haha

Dear NovelaMaven,

I agree with so many here who have said that this is a NovelaMaven Classic! Funny, witty, informative, well-observed, detailed, and stylish and with great Spanish tips, to boot. You consistently and wonderfully give us so much to enjoy and learn in your recaps. Many, many thanks!

Looking forward to tonight!
Best to you and everyone,
Julia R.

Anita:

Of course you are right that Maria has repeatedly tried to seduce Ale.

But, if I remember correctly, during Montse's first pregnancy,Ale announced to Maria and anyone else who would listen that she was his 'mujer' and he DID try to have sexual relations with Maria but failed in the attempt.

We speculated for a long tome on how many times that little scene may have played out since they were away for most of Montse's pregnancy.

EJ

Dear Novela Maven...Thanks so much for that fabulously wild and wonderful ride, You are one smart and witty writer. I read your recap in segments as a reward for unpacking and getting some chores done.

I loved all the lines that have been quoted, but my favorites were short and sweet.."BYOBible" and "Boo Friggin' Hoo."

Ah..Maria...You used to get paid for it...but now you cannot even give it away. That scene of her in the blonde wig , splashed in Mony's signature scent and wearing Mony's undies as she crazily tried to fulfill JL's fantasy was....muy creepy. You have to admit that Maria is persistent and tenacious...in a crazy, pathetic way.

"I know that novela heroines are usually not allowed to do such things, but I still want to see Monse kick Maria across Mexico to the other coast. With her platform heels on. This nasty piece of trash has caused everyone more than enough grief." Hilarious UA!!! I'm enjoying reading all of the comments at work :) Great observations! I did not think about the possibility that Maria plans to dupe MDJL as well, Vivi in DC, I think you make a good point, JL will believe Maria and he will be able to say "Told you so HMMMMM" Can't stand him!

EJ--
I concede one point. Ale did indeed announce that from then on Maria was going to be *HIS* mujer. He failed. We didn't get to see how many times he actually tried AND failed (they were out of sight and out of the Patio's mind all that time).

Maria's frustration showed when they returned--she kept hopin' and tryin' to no avail.

"We speculated for a long tome"

And a limited first edition of that TOME is now available from the Crackpot Theorists' Press.

[hee hee]

True. I don't think Alejandro tried again. I think he still thought of her as a sister and didn't even consider it. Otherwise Maria wouldn't have looked as frustrated as she did upon their return.

What will it take for the two of them to file charges against her?

Moral Putrefaction Perfect. Oh so perfect in every way! This one will go down in the "Annals of CarayCaray" history!!

Perfect. What else can I say, NovelaMaven?!

Diana, amiga, what beautiful words you wrote for these characters. You are an amazing woman.

Fatima

Wow. It's so gratifying to read that you folks enjoyed what I wrote today.

Thank you so much Fatima, Anita, Susanlynn, elna june, Julia Rold, Novella lover, gringo, Rebecca, Karen and Maricruz! (Forgive me if I left anyone out -- I assure you I read every word all of you wrote.)

P.S. The checks are in the mail. Don't tell Blog mom about our 'arrangement,' ok?

Thanks NovelaMaven. Once again, you have achieved perfection in recapping. Your style always gives me a serious case of pencil envy and of course the grammar reminders are always a wonderful lagniappe.

My favorite scene was María's sultry seduction assault on JL. I was really thinking for a moment there that he might just take her up on her offer although I doubt that he was in any condition to successfully participate.

JL seems to be softening some. I was surprised that he allowed Alejandro and Montserrat to be together when they confronted Fabiola. Weird.

I do not understand the lack of forgiveness by some here for Refugio. Why is he being held to such a high standard and yet some are doing such complex mental acrobatics in trying to find a way for the murdering, drug dealing, whoremongering EZ to remain at Carlota's side?

Finally let me extend belated thanks to UA for providing Monday's highly detailed, cleverly written, and exquisitely illustrated recap. Sorry that I arrived way too late to comment in the lively discussion.

Carlos

You're welcome, Carlos. I included those screen grabs of Maria just for you!

Carols, yes, I was very surprised that JL allowed Ale and Mony to see Fab together, Maybe he was so hungover from the night before that he was not thinking clearly evil wise.

carols ????...or maybe Carlos.

pssssst...Carlos, I'll make sure you get your check too (with a tiny deduction as a penalty for lateness -- you know the rules.)

Maybe JL let Alejandro and Montserrat talk to Fabiola together because he was anxious for both of them to know that all the Almonte money is gone. (And with Alejandro's fortune gone, surely Montserrat will now choose Bachelor Number Two, right?)

Does JL know that Gracie snookered Fab out of her cash ?

NovelaMaven,

"And with Alejandro's fortune gone, surely Montserrat will now choose Bachelor Number Two, right?"

Gee, that sounds a lot like María's calculations on this matter.

Carlos

Susanlynn,

"Does JL know that Gracie snookered Fab out of her cash ? "

He told Ale and Montse that he knew that Fab was their half-sib. Montse asked him what else he knew. He said it was a "delicate" matter and he would rather have Fabiola tell them herself.

What could be more "delicate" than money? Anyway, that was my assumption.

"Gee, that sounds a lot like María's calculations on this matter."

Well yes, Carlos, I've learned a thing or two from María.

Sorry for posting late; wonderful, delicious recap, NovelaMaven. I was throwing Nerfelos, also. Loved the comments, think my favorite was, There's not enough Tequila in the world..., but Remember when we were both worthless slugs? was a close second.
Giacinti is basically pronounced Jacinti, is it not?
My CC's had Guardencia spelled out, interestingly enough. They really emphasized her name as if it was an evil name. So Jimenez is going to be related to someone, probably.
It looked to me like Juventino and Gracie may have had a sexual skirmish somewhere along the way, though, so I doubt they are related, anyone remember the weird interactions they had early in the TN, or was I hallucinating?

You weren't hallucinating. Juventino was a presumptuous, evil slug who had perverted eyes on Gracie. I am guessing that he knew a lot more about the nature of her relationship with Benjamin and realized she was selling herself to the highest bidder whenever she could. He was looking to get a piece of that action in exchange for his silence.

Well, Carlos, re the enigma of Refugio verses EZ.
It may be purely emotional.
On principle, I totally agree, Refugio deserves a second chance and EZ doesn't. ABSOLUTELY.
But...the Refugio character seems like a big doofus. EZ is interesting. Go figure.
Kind of like Maria...

Thank you, Emarie!

Yes, the "Gia-" in "Giacinti" is like the English "Ja-" in "Jacuzzi." It's sort of Italian. (I say "sort of" because if it were really Italian, it would be pronounced something like "Ja - Cheen - tee")

In Spanish, the closest thing to this sound would be spelled "Ya" or sometimes "lla-."

When Spanish words are spelled with "Ja-" but pronounced like English "ja-", they are almost always borrowings from other languages.

Othewise, "ja-" would sound sort of like "Ha-" as in "jabón" (soap) or "jamás" (never).

If I have that wrong, someone please give a holler and let us know.

Novela Maven,

Thank you for writing this amazing recap. Your insights definitely enhanced this dark and dreary show. Some of my favorite lines from the recaps have already been mentioned (especially those about Maria), so I won't repeat them.

A couple of thoughts I had: I felt some weirdness when Montserrat mentioned to Alejandro that they needed to talk to "their sister." I realize that M & A don't share any bloodlines between them, but it still sounded funny when she said it.

I'm upset that Ezequiel guilted Carlota into apologizing to him when he was in the wrong the entire time for lying to her. She doesn't deserve that attitude, and it's going to come back and bite him when she realizes what a lying cheat he is.

Josefina and Dimitrio have chemistry -- all the unspoken words between them make every scene they're in so interesting.

I'm relieved Padre Anselmo is coming back.

I wish the show would resolve Dominga's infertility. She and Macario are so cute, and I really want them to have children. I loved the scene where she got to learn about the good Padre in order to have a secret over Macario.

I'm grateful for all the amazing recappers! Novela Maven, your insights on Spanish grammar are much appreciated! I'm a Spanish student, and improving my grammar is one of the reasons that justify my watching telenovelas! Thanks for the great work!

What a nice comment, Tracy H! Are you a college student? You should always read what I have to say with a critical eye -- I'm not a professional, just an enthusiastic amateur, and I don't always get it right.

Thanks for stopping by.

Maricruz and NovelaMaven:

My closed captions clearly read " Gaudencia" , and that's what I heared Fabs say. Will check HuluPlus later in the day.

Nanette, EJ, and Anita (and others I may not named):

If Ale tried to sleep with Maria on their trip and "was unable to" (you know what I mean), then I guess I can understand somewhat Maria's obession to FINALLY have sex with Ale.

I too have heard the expression "Mi Mujer" on many other novelas. As I always understood this to mean "My Woman" which implies having sex, I asked my Latino husband to explain this to me, because many times the expression was used by men who had never had sex with the woman they were referring to. I took "Mi Mujer" as a macho thing. Why don't they just make it easier and say, "Mi Esposa" or "Mi Amante"?

In this case, I think Ale only wanted everyone to believe Maria was "his woman" because he was so hurt by what he thought Monse did with MDJL.

Hope this makes sense. It's 3 am EST here and I know I'm out of it.

Thanks so much for the pronunciation clarifications. I suppose this is why after 50+ years of speaking English my Dominican husband still pronounces Yacht as "Ja--cht". I've corrected him for all this time, and he still doesn't get it right. Thank goodness not too many words in English begin with "Ya".

OK
I watched this episode on HuluPlus and the closed caption read "Gaudencia" which is what I heard Fabs saying at 100% volume.
