Qué Pobres, Jueves 7/10/14 (#133): Carrots and Sticks
So MA makes his triumphant return to the fonda, and Lupita greets him with a punch in the face. MA has no idea why, but he tries to apologize anyway, and he even mentions the letter (that he doesn't know Lupita never got) but Lupe is too angry to think about it.
MA says he apologized to Mini too, and she took it a lot better than Lupe is, "and then something weird happened." Again, Lupe is too angry to focus on the "something weird" and thinks "apology" is a strange way to describe being naked in bed with Minerva. (Perla and Carmelita are listening at the door, by the way.)
MA doesn't know what Lupe is talking about and says "wow, after all this time I would have thought you'd know me better than that" and Lupe replies sarcastically "you're right about that!" She gives back his swanky hand-crafted upcycled PVC engagement ring, but don't worry! Her finger won't be naked very long!
MA insists that Alejo and Minerva must have schemed to split them up, but Guadaluuuuupe bitterly says he'll be glad to get his old life back. "Go away. Love is not for me." MA protests in confusion; Lupe reminds him to go see his mom at the hospital.
Nepo shows up; his timing is always impeccable. MA thanks Nepo for testifying on his behalf. He hugs Nepo and leaves.
Nepo says he's here for Lupe's forgiveness. Lupe says she and MA broke up, but won't tell Nepo any more. Nepo thinks this means they can rekindle their romance, not that they ever had one. He's defensive about Gwendy and says they were never an item. Lupe says it's odd that Nepo took Ahole's money to settle the Menchacas' debt. (I feel like I missed something here.)
Nepo leaves, and Carmelita tries to get Lupe to take a break and get some rest. Lupe tries to hide her crying eyes when Chuy comes in, but then Perla and Tizoc are there too; so Lupe dries her eyes, turns around, and tells them she broke up with MA.
There was a scene later with Lupe and Chuy and/or Carmelita, which I missed.
At the jail, Top Cop Agent Chavez tells Vilma (who has received a change of clothing, because beige is the new pink) that she should cooperate and name her accomplice(s). He says she'll get an awfully long sentence if she takes all the blame on herself, but Vilma insists that she's solely responsible for all the charges.
On the phone, Ahole tells Emi that the visitation agreement will soon be a done deal. He doesn't miss the chance to say that Lupita is selfish and has always wanted Emi all to herself. He also says that he's going to teach Emi's friends not to hurt him.
Ahole sends a big basket of roses to Lupita and calls to ask about the visitation agreement. She hangs up on him! Stunned, Ahole begins complaining to Vilma, but then remembers that she's not there for him to kick around any more!
Isela eagerly looks forward to being able to travel around the world, but Mini worries that they may not have gone far enough to permanently split up MA and Lupe. She's impatient for Ahole to marry Lupe.
At school, Emi makes up with his classmates and invites them all to a party at his dad's house this weekend. He's smirking just like his daddy!
Saul takes MA to the hospital to see AS. Frida, Leo, and AS are all very eager to start spending money again - like, immediately. Smart phones, servants, cars, parties, etc. MA exclaims, "You haven't learned anything!" He asks if they won't at least thank the people who've helped them all this time? AS says that once they get all their stuff back and settled in their fine house, she'll send a nice gift.
MA announces, "Oh, we're not getting it all back. All my money was lost, and all our property belongs to the company. And Ahole can't give it back to us, because Vilma's the one who did the fraud. What's the big deal? You've all learned to live without luxuries, right?" AS is swooning.
Perla and Tizoc are super-supportive of Lupe for breaking up with MA, and suggest that she give Ahole another chance. Lupe realizes that Ahole has been working on them, helping with their careers, but Perla and Tizoc insist that it's just their great talent and charisma.
Outside the hospital, MA gloats to Saul that he'll teach his family a lesson. Saul does not approve of the lie (about the lost fortune), but agrees to go along with it. He asks MA if he's also doing this as an excuse to stay close to Guadalupe. MA doesn't deny it. As his family approaches, he teases them, "Let's go to Italy! Italy Street, I mean."
Chuy makes Perla allow Tomas to accompany her on a meeting with a modeling agent. The agent doesn't have a lot of work available for her. Some assignments are clearly unsuitable, and others she thinks she's too good for. The agent says too bad, but that's all we've got. Come back next week. Tomas tells the agent to keep looking for something for Perla because she's awesome.
Perla is discouraged; maybe getting the cover was just a fluke. Maybe she should change her look. Tomas insists that she's already pretty and shouldn't change a thing.
Tizoc's agent plays a new recording. "Tay" doesn't even recognize his own song. He's impatient to become a star, but the agent says that fame takes time. And he has a surprise!
Now Tizoc is with Ahole! (I think this scene is out of order and should have been shown before the previous scene.) Ahole starts off nicely enough, inquiring about AS's health, saying how much he loooooves Lupe. But he and Tizoc had a deal, and Tizoc should be pushing Lupe like Ahole's been pushing Tizoc's career. Tizoc wants even more push.
Suddenly Tizoc is with his agent again. The agent says he's going to make Tay's song the #1 hit. How? The magic of payola!
What is the opposite of a triumphant return? Because that's the kind of return the RPs make to the fonda. (Pity the fonda!) AS moans, "I wish I were dead." The Menchacas accentuate the positive: at least MA is no longer in jail. (They are wasting their breath.) Because their fortune is gone, Lupe says Leo, Frida, and AS are free to stay at the house, but MA is not. Saul says MA will stay with him.
MA promises to find a place where his family can move in with him. (I can't wait to see what he comes up with.) He reaches out to Emi, but is rebuffed. He also promises to get Ahole to put the house in the Menchacas' name.
MA asks to feel Chuy's sunshine one last time. They hug. Then MA leaves the Menchaca home FOREVER (until next time).
Next, MA tells Saul he's going to find proof that Ahole did the fraud. He's sure that Vilma wouldn't do anything on her own; she doesn't do anything unless Ahole tells her to.
Saul and MA go to Mati's psychiatric nursing home (I don't think Chavez went there himself to see Mati; I believe he sent some flunkie). After a long wait, a woman is finally wheeled up to them. But she's not Mati!
Ahole brings the visitation agreement to the Menchaca home for Lupe to sign. According to the agreement, he has Emi this weekend and he's throwing a party. Woo-woo. Lupe signs the agreement in between scenes (I hope she read it first) and reminds Ahole that she has to be present for their visit.
Ahole does the puppydog face and tells Lupe he totally understands all this pain she's going through and wants to support her and help her heal. He whips out an engagement ring. She replies, "I will never marry you."
Ahole drops the schmuck and awe campaign (thank commenter Salvador for that neat name) and puts it bluntly: Lupe will marry him whether she likes it or not. He'll kick her family out of the house. Oh, is that not scary enough? Then he'll turn in Lupe and her family for kidnapping his grandmother.
Still no? Ahole plays the last card in his hand: "Marry me or I'll take Emiliano away from you!" [All the viewers in Viewerville shout their agreement!]
He waves the ring in front of Lupita's nose. I wonder if there's a way to use an engagement ring as a weapon?
Next Time: MA confronts Ahole about Mati. Ahole encourages Vilma to keep up the charade. Ugh.
Labels: pobres
I agree with those who found it downright odd that Lupe didn't try to pummel MA awake.
And here's another thing that at least two TNs are using at the same time - injury to the family jewels. Every time I look at Robo they are always talking about Sergio Sendel's nuts.
I'm hoping to get this all written up by midnight or not much later.
MA still hasn't had time to process what happened, so we'll have to wait for the gears in his brain to start working.
I was also glad to see Alejo drop the act. Since trying to get Lupe to marry him por las buenas didn't work, it's por las malas now and there can be no doubt in Lupe's mind that he's scum. Of course I'm not happy she'll probably marry him. I just want to see him lose at least one!
Perla needs to drop her delusions about being a model. She and Tizoc are unbearable.
I know he's just a kid, but my level of hate for Emiliano is so high. I wish Ahole would just take him!
I know all this bad stuff was predicted but I'm still mad at the plague that is Alejo. Oh goodness and Nepo seems doomed to be an idiot for the duration of this tn.
I hope if Lupita gets forced into marriage that she negotiates some things for herself beside Emi.
I am so glad that MA is now acting as less of a chump since he has been found innocent and has regained his fortune. He was too "chumpy" for a while. He is being smart not telling the family about the true state of their finances.
MA's conversation with Lupe was too frustrating because neither asked specific enough questions or gave sufficient details to start to understand what exactly happened. It is so frustrating how telenovela characters always talk around the issue without ever focusing in on info that would better solve the problem at hand.
Perla, Tizoc, Leonardo, Frida and AS were all insufferable for the same reason: wanting something for nothing.
Julie, the end of the conversation between Nepo and Lupe was weird because she said that she would always be grateful for the friendship they had had all of these years but what she couldn't get was how he could allow Alejo pay off their debt. So she ended up sounding pissed with him anyway.
Isela made me laugh when she said she did not want to die without seeing the Great Wall of China or sailing through Venice in a "glándula" rather than a gondola.
It sure felt like the beginning of a new section of the novela when MA paused for a moment before he left with Saúl and looked at all of the Menchacas and the Ruizpalacios together. A poignant moment!

Isn't it ironic that Frida, Leo, and AS didn't pull themselves together until MA was in jail and Mati was taken away? Well maybe not ironic, exactly, since MA's arrest was what forced them to start applying themselves; but MA and Mati were the very two people who kept trying to get them to do something.
Maybe it's also because MA and Mati weren't there to act as buffers between the families. Chuy had far more success than either MA or Mati in getting AS to face reality. (Of course, he's also the one who kept putting a bottle in her hands!)
you were on FIRE toward the end of the recap! loved:
Ahole drops the schmuck and awe campaign (thank commenter Salvador for that neat name INDEED!!)...
Oh, is that not scary enough? ...
[All the viewers in Viewerville shout their agreement!]
... I wonder if there's a way to use an engagement ring as a weapon?
one minor correction, at the 'modeling agency' meeting you said Tizoc asked the guy to look again..., i think you meant Tomas.
I want Tomas to get away from Perla. I am beginning to like very much the idea of Tomas getting a major legal dept job at the editorial once MA cleans house there...
and about MA lying to his family, I like the fact that he 'tested' them first to see how much they had learned from their experience at La Nopalera, and then not compensating them by leaving them in the dark about his money. I think he does mean to keep them in the dark about his money, but the one that said/wondered if MA was going to get a luxury apt and leave his family at La Nopalera was Saul, I don't think that is MA's plan. I think MA will get a humble place for them, just a bit more comfortable than La Nopalera, but he would not want to put any social/financial gaps between himself and Lupe... Does he want to stay close to Lupe? of course! I like his strategy mode of 'reconquista' (start-over courting?) and staying close to protect her from A-hole, who we all can be sure will be looking to take advantage of vulnerable prey (Lupe). You go MA!! i loved everything i saw of him last night!
The card that MA will love love that A-hole is not expecting is the 'surprise' in Tomas' apartment.
If the surprise at Tom's house is Mati, why would Tom, Chuy, et al keep it a secret from MA and Lupe??
Anyway, Chuy and MA have built a bond, certainly MA has earned Chuy's 'sunshine' (good one!) way better than A-hole ever did. And that will be in line with MA's attitude when Lupe punched him, he did not get violent or offensive, he was just trying to understand what was going on.
I actually didn't mind the conversation with Lupita last night if for no other reason that Lupita was specific. In many novelas, the character would talk about how the other lied but not come out with exactly what it is they did. At least once MA talks to Tomas and gets some time to sit down and think about what happened, he'll understand Lupe thinks she saw.
I loved that Don Chuy finally let MA acercarse a su calor last night. :)
And anyone who talks to both MA and Lupe (Tomas? Frida? Not sure who else is likely in the near future) ought to be able to help connect the dots, too.
Ideally, though, Emi would just admit that he gave the letter to Ahole and then we'd still have enough time left over for dessert.
I actually didn't like that MA lied to his family. I just don't think lying is the best way to teach values. I'm not sure Ana Sofía could be seen as anything but a lost case anymore but he neglects all the changes in his sibilings so far. And just because he has the money, it doesn't mean he has to give it to them, he can still make them earn it. It doesn't have to be all or nothing.
And keeping his family with the Menchacas is insensitive to them after all their hospitality. At least he should pretend that Saúl will help him to rent a house in the same neighborhood so they don't have to keep bothering the people who gently took them in. That part really bothers me.
Anyway, this part of the plot reminds me of a movie with Zuria Vega's father, Gonzalo Vega, called Nosotros los Nobles (trailer). I wonder how much influence that movie had in this telenovela when it came to adapting the Colombian characters of the original to their Mexican counterparts.

It won't be a fancy placae, obviously, and I wonder if he'll deliberately get an even smaller place than the penthouse in hopes of teaching the lesson faster.
It does show that MA hasn't learned all of his lessons yet, either. One lesson that he should have learned by now is that they won't stop riding the gravy train as long as that train is in service. He's talked about making them responsible for their fiscal well-being, but he doesn't seem capable of actually doing it without resorting to trickery. That's rather Aholish of him.
I like that MA isn't indulging his greedy family, but I'm not a super fan of his methods. I think he should be more honest with them, and tell them that he is simply not going to let them blow through the money he worked hard to earn in London the same way they frittered away the family fortune. That he'll get them a modest little place to live (which he should really do ASAP; Los Menchaca have put up with them long enough), but if they want money for luxuries, they'll have to earn it themselves.
Perla Ivette has no clue about business. She whined that taking Tomas along to the meeting would make her seem like a baby with a chaperone. Well, only if she sees it that way. If anything, taking along a lawyer/manager should make her seem more successful and professional. Well, until she opens her mouth and speaks, which spoils any delusions of mature professionalism.
Tizoc seemed offended to find out that his "music" is being launched to success only because of a bribe, and not because it's so great. GOOD! It was very funny when he was mirroring Ahole's body language and Ahole got irritated about it and tried to move away from him, though.
Interesting that the RP's seem to have learned nothing even after spending so much time with Menchacas. AS is still a gin soaked, pretentious snob, Leo and Frieda who appeared to be learning something immediately revert to their annoying selves at the idea of having money again
It is obvious that anyone who crosses paths with the RP's is tainted by the contact. Emi has turned into a spoiled, lying little brat who needs some serious time outs. Tizoc and Perla have now developed swelled heads as they go chasing after fame. Even MA still feels it is OK to lie to his own family even if it is for their own good. SMH
Something really bad has to lurking in future if we are ever to see any character growth with these people. I'm certainly willing to bet that somewhere along the line Emi will overhear Ahole expressing his real feelings pardon me lack of feelings for his son. At this point it is a case of nature versus nurture for the little boy and one can only hope that nurture takes over and those negative RP genes fall by the wayside.
Interesting that Ahole is working mainly with Tizoc now and ignoring Perla. Is it because he thinks she's useless or doesn't have potential? Or does he have different plans for Perla at another time?
To be fair, AS is no longer gin-soaked. She's pulque-soaked!
Maybe Emi's reality check will happen sooner rather than later. Perhaps the revenge party at Ahole's house will open his eyes (or Lupe's). I wonder how long we have to wait for the "weekend."
If Lupe does agree to marry Ahole - and it does seem inevitable - I hope she makes him ten times more miserable than Mini ever did. It's the only entertainment she can possibly get from such a marriage.
You're asking a rational question and we all know that is non existent in Novelaland.
Lupe s smart enough that she should have seen that there was no way that MA would have gone to Ahole's but she is also impulsive and that leaves her open to not thinking clearly. She'd be a fool to marry Ahole but it does seem she will end up thinking she has no other choice.
and Tizoc's second bad aftertaste about his 'success by bribe'
yeah the Tizoc imitating A-hole's body posture in the couch and A-hole moving away was funny indeed.
The real giveaway is the interior decor. At the country house it's upscale cozy. At Ahole's house, it's cool and stark. And I recognized the little room between the exit and the bedroom from last time, when MA was trying to get out of there and Mini was chasing him.
Also, Ahole pointed out to Lupe that Mini's car was parked outside. That wouldn't have be worth mentioning if they'd been at his house!
I wondered why Vilma was wearing fuzzy footie PJs. I'm not sure when this episode was on, maybe May? I've never been to Mexico but I wouldn't figure you'd need pajamas with feet at that time of year... maybe she was trying to avoid bedbugs.
MA was supposed to administrate it so it was left all in his name but he used to give Ana Sofía everything she asked. He can just choose not to freely give them the money for their crazy spending if he wants this time.
Jarocha
Hi all, after a few days away I can finally sit down and jot down some thoughts.
“If the surprise at Tom's house is Mati, why would Tom, Chuy, et al keep it a secret from MA and Lupe??”
Julie, assuming this is the case the only reason I can think of is that Mati herself requested secrecy. And I would probably agree. As long as Alejo the Hun has legal rights over her, he can get anyone who helps her into trouble by accusing them of kidnapping. I guess this would be Mati’s “Rocky in training” moment when she practices punching a side of beef before she switches over to Alejo.
When I saw Lupita enter the room with Mini maliciously cuddled with drugged MA I just kept yelling at Lupita “Punch him! Hit him! Wake him so that he can face you! (and you can see that the poor guy is out cold)” But alas, Lupita followed the traditional telenovela recipe and left thinking the worst.
When Alejo dropped his act I immediately saw the look of pure evil and morbid satisfaction of not having to hide behind the puppy face. Here I have to admit that I liked Lupita’s reaction. This was not the average telenovela reaction. She did not flinch.
Yeah, I agree in that our four young (and perhaps not so young) siblings have problems. It is interesting to note that all four of them suffer from delusions yet are quite different. I don’t have a problem with Perla being a model. Everyone is entitled to dream and to take action to make that dream come true. What I dislike about her is that she thinks she is the world’s greatest. The way she carries herself and tries to flaunt everything makes her seem cheap and borderline bimbo.
It is also a bit awkward because Mexico is a classist state where people need to be light skinned, 6 feet tall and have some sort of European ancestry in order to succeed. In the meanwhile, those who have slightly darker skin are discriminated against. This is true even of telenovelas. Take a gander at most of the lead and you’ll rarely see someone with darker skin color. So it would be nice if Perla did succeed as a model thus breaking this conception. Still, she has a long way to go, including going back to school and learning how to talk right. It is one thing to use slang as one way to communicate and be part of a group, it is completely different when the entire vocabulary is slang.
Tizoc is similar in that he does not know how to talk right. But in all his “wisdom” he can’t even bring himself to read a contract or to be cautious of people. Yet when the Ruizpalacios first arrived at Italia he was all over them. He should have taken the same attitude with Charlie (the so called “manager”).
And finally, I can’t go without defending the greatest victim of this story: Emiliano.
“[All the viewers in Viewerville shout their agreement!]”
This was funny! Oh yeah
But who exactly is Emiliano? As this story started we saw him as a noble, quiet albeit slightly tormented kid. His paternal figures were his grandpa and uncle. Peer pressure at school made him feel inadequate because he could not “produce” a father. Then out of the blue appears his real dad, a bigger than life (and rotten to the core) character. From one day to the next Emiliano had a rich dad, did I say rich, oh yeah, I did, that could shower him with respectability among his peers and with all sorts of material things. This would have been a great experience for Emi that would have shaped him to be the man he would be someday, except that the dad was more rotten than a 3 year old egg sitting in a car out in the desert. Emi wanted, nay, needed the paternal figure that he could learn from and grow into. That is why he succumbed to the dark side faster than Anakin. Daddy dearest knows what buttons to press and has mastered the sad puppy strategy.
Jarocha, you bring up an interesting point. (BTW my wife is a jarocha too). I also did not like MA lying to his family, but gaaaawd, they are so useless, so thick headed, so visionless that I can see why he did it. It was never about the money, it was about their attitude towards life taking everything for granted, not having a purpose and not valuing what really is important. MA had hoped that losing everything would bring them to their senses, but no, the “fresa” complex has assimilated them completely.
Unfortunately, as was mentioned some time earlier in the story, the Ruizpalacios have a legal right to the money, so even if MA is the money man, he *has* to provide them with their share.
I totally loved that you mentioned Nosotros Lo Nobles. When this story started that is the movie I first thought of and mentioned it here:
http://foro.telenovela-world.com/n4/read-t.php?f=1483&i=15&t=15#reply_15
The mention is made towards the end of the post. I had no idea that Zuria was Gonzalo’s daughter. The movie even matches the offsprings: two boys and one girl. Similarities end there. I bought the DVD on a trip to Mexico. Much good it did, the evil that is MPAA and Hollywood would not allow my region 1 player to play a region 4 DVD. But that is another story.
Not that he wouldn't take Emi away, but it wouldn't last very long.
We're not so much trying to punish Emi as we are trying to torment Ahole. I figure Oyuki (is that her name) will feed Emi and so forth. He might be a little neglected, but he won't suffer.
On the other hand, Emi will drive Ahole up the wall. If Ahole ignores him, Ahole loses. But every moment with the boy is hard work for him, and Emi is a needy boy.
Maybe MA is testing them to see if they can muster the financial savvy to figure out that their money shouldn't all be gone. I don't think it's too much at all to expect that adults who are going to have access to the money should understand the finances involved! They've all been living in this lalaland of assuming money is magic and neverending their whole lives. I would certainly demand that AS, Leo, and Frida learn about where the family income comes from, how much there is, what the investment details mean, and what the budget is for all the various things it pays for.
Frida and Leo's education about her own inheritance baffles me. It seems nobody, not their parents, grandparents or MA has ever tried to teach them about the family business or the handle of their finances. It seems only MA and Alejo were expected to take part in the company and the administration of the fortune.
I suppose I can understand about Frida, since she must have been very young when her father and grandfather died and AS is so removed from any kind of responsability that she wouldn't do it. With Leo, his relationship with his granpa is more of a mystery.
