La Gata #34 Thurs 10-16-14 Fallout from the Non-Wedding
Previously
The lovely Monica calls on La Gata, telling her God and Pablo punished her and humiliated her like never before. The love Esme and Pablo share is stronger than the hate and they must pursue that love. “Thanks for listening,” the shunned bride concludes. “God bless you and forgive me.”
The Dance of Love Continues
One can only suppose that Sra. LaToodle wants us to feel renewed with clean and almost comely Rita as a love object. The IV man appears in her room again, claiming that he is her clown and she is his circus. (His glasses are a little thick—maybe he doesn’t see so well.) She says if she could get out of bed, she’d beat him. The nurse comes to chase him off, saying he proposed marriage to the lady in room 14. So he roams the halls, preying on women.
Gata gazes from her window, asking the universe for Pablo’s location. No answer.
Pablo explains his mural to a group of gentlemen, proposing animals for the outdoor setting—cats in particular. He rhapsodizes to himself that he’ll immortalize his love for Gata, work through the pain he caused, and save money for his kittens—uhm, his children.
Gata, with no answer from her window, is now casing the dump seeking news of Pablo. She visits Fela, who is communing with her rosebushes in front of her hut. Fela says she and Gata are tired of thorns in their lives. We see a sepia flashback of Fela happily tending her roses in her earlier life. Gata’s childhood was happy and so on. My attention wandered from the remaining rose metaphor.
Pablo is feverishly working on the mural, not eating or sleeping. The man in charge asks him to take it easy. Pablo wants to keep working, boss man says something about running away from family means you run away from yourself? Meant for sage counsel, concern.
Fela and Esme converse about finding Pablo. It will take courage to find him, Gata will search, Fela suggests taking care. Gata goes to the ravine to search, Pablo not there.
Pablo needs to earn money for his children. A strange woman comes down the steps to the mural. She loves his work, wonder if he is a street painter? (She could be the sister of artist Natasha in CI.) He explains his art training, experience in New York, etc. She has an art gallery and wonders if he would do an exhibit there? He wonders if he could expose his collection of Esmeralda paintings?
The Dance of Love Has Some People Looking for Love in All the Wrong Places
Esme brings her search for Pablo back home, ringing the doorbell as Lorenza and Mariano answer. (No Augie in this episode. Drinking and sulking in his study or gone off to dry out?) Esme needs to talk to Pablo. Lorenza, of course, breaks into her usual shrewish screaming fit, insulting Gata and saying her son was kicked out because of the trashy cat. Our girl says she may not have money, but she has dignity, values, and a soul that’s not for sale. She’ll keep looking for Pablo. Lorenza stalks away from the marble halls, calling “Look what I have to bear in my own house!” Mariano offers his friendship, claiming Esme gave him valuable life lessons.
Meatball is also looking for his love object, dragging Lupe with him through the dump. Lupe says looking for Rita is not the way to find the Cat. He knocks on Rita’s door and confronts Maria and Fela. Fela says “It’s the devil” and does a great little act to ward off the evil influence. They tell him Rita is still in the hospital.
Fernando tells Esme he’ll ask lawyer Osorio to find Pablo, but she can’t go back to him. Esme responds she is tired of people deciding for them. Whatever she and Pablo do, they’ll decide for themselves. Esme is on her bed with the babies, while Pablo is on his laptop. Then Esme is on the phone with Osorio, hearing where Pablo is. She reports to the babies. (I think this is where she was toting one Michael Jackson style? Seems they always want to show them face to the camera.)
More charming conversation with Mariano and his mumsie. Lorenza says she needs to find Pablo before Gata does. Son says, “Mom, you always lose this battle! If destiny wants them together they’ll be together.” He also inquires if she’s afraid of God’s punishment? She thinks nothing would be worse than that woman in our family. (She’s completely ridiculous—blaarrgh!)
Lovers’ Reunion Spoiled by the Fickle Finger of Fate, Telenovela Style
Pablo is on the scaffold, painting and thinking of Esme. She is on a path through the park, pushing the baby stroller. Pablo spots her and in his shock, loses his footing and falls from the scaffold. He hits his head and lies motionless on the ground. Esme reaches the office, where she tells the boss she’s looking for Pablo. He says Pablo is painting, so Esme leaves a message that she is looking for him and needs to talk to him. His children need him.
A young man sees the comatose artist and calls for help. The boss and others also arrive, calling Pablo to “wake up!” Esme has arrived back home, telling Meche she found Pablo. Meche, as usual, thinks it’s not a good idea. Esme is upsetting everyone, especially Sr. Silencio. Mariano receives a phone call about Pablo’s accident. We see Pablo in the hospital, going into a scanner (must be a Cat scan, huh?). The doctors are studying the image, then running Pablo back in again due to problems locating an actual brain. He ends up in bed with a cervical collar.
Meatball is still seeking Rita to facilitate his lovers’ reunion. (Maybe this is comic relief so we don’t fret over Pablo?) He tells Lupe not to ruin his plans. Rita is surprised at seeing Mr. Italiano, the last person she was expecting. She (flattering him) always dreamed he’d marry the Cat. She’ll help him find his love, but she needs money for medicine. Medicine to help her memory, of course. 3,000 pesos will give him the address, so he begins counting out the bills.
Mumsie Lorenza wants to reunite with her baby boy. “How’s my son? Will he die?” The doctor explains that not only is there a bad head injury, but the studies showed depression and stress influencing the patient’s condition. (No! How could that be, with such a loving and supportive family?)
Gata has told her babies they might see their father today. Then, she’s at the dump, telling Fela and Maria something is crushing her heart. She worries that Pablo is in danger. The good news is that she told Silencio about Fela and he wants the best neurologist to see her.
Lorenza is weeping over Pablo’s bed, wailing “We shouldn’t have let Pablo out of the house!” Now that is a statement one cannot argue with. Mariano thinks the injury is a game changer and they should talk to Augie about letting Pablo come back home.
Still at the dump, Gata stops by to visit Ines. She tries to encourage her to drop the life of crime and return to school. Ines says she got bored with school and Gata better not meddle with her life or her man, Garabato. Gata was just trying to help, but Viewerville thinks it’s a lost cause.
Rita is thumbing through Meatball’s money when the IV guy comes back. He’s crushed by Rita’s indifference, but she kicks him out anyway. He flirts his way out, as she smirks in satisfaction. Her other victim, Meatball, is rejoicing that he knows Cat’s location. He’s planning to kidnap her, since her place is by his side. Really, he’s doing her a favor. Lupe looks at the address and says it’s a soccer field. Game winner, Rita.
Lorenza hovers over Pablo, asking “Son, what do you need?” (Another mother, for starters.) The doctor said you needed rest. Esme sits on the bleachers, gazing at Pablo’s mural, thinking how beautiful it is. “Why can’t I find you Pablo? Don’t you see our children need you?” (Gee, what would happen if she goes back to the office and asks the park boss what happened to Pablo?)
Previews—Esme’s quest continues.

I fear for Pablo. I mean I know he'll live, but he was actually moving in the right direction developmentally. Will this set him back?
I loved seeing Monika Sanchez again. I like her...though it looked like her character might not be on team good.
Doc Carlos is watching this one but since when could you determine that "depression and stress influencing the patient’s condition." by running a comatose strange guy through a cat scan?
And Esme must've ran from the murals in those high-heeled kickers cause it was only moments after she left that guitar dude was screaming "auxilio"! And this also cracked me right up: "Gee, what would happen if she goes back to the office and asks the park boss what happened to Pablo?"
It is not possible for me to care less about Ines and Meatball but thanks for those bits on them. . .confirms Ines is terminally stoopid and Meatball is useless. They'd better not have him kidnap Esme!
I missed the first few minutes and didn't hear Monica's full speech. What a decent gal! I hope she is over her obsession with cousin Pablo. Just wonder if they're writing her off! Man, wish they'd write meat head off instead. Once again, thank you La Paloma!

I think the relationship between Esme and Pablo is the human equivalent of electrolysis, an electro-chemical process where a positively charged ion called a CATion (actually cation) moves toward a negative terminal.
I think that, as his mother, Lorenza will now abscond with injured Pablo and keep him as a virtual prisoner in the family home. Maybe Gata will see him sunning himself on that porch and be able to make plans to get him out.
I hope Augie will make cameo appearances, giving us his drunken insight as to how the world should be. If he does this enough, it might even convince Lorenza of the error of her ways.
Lila, like you, I got a kick out of how much diagnostic info they got from that CT scan or MRI or whatever it was supposed to be. I had no idea that Mexican scanners were so much more advanced than ours.
Oh, boy, Meatball just won't give up, will he. He must be still around to cause actual mayhem and muck up the trajectory of our couple's journey back to each other.

Sara- It was a hoot seeing Monica Sanchez again, and it does look like she'll be a clone of the artist lady in CI. At least there are no headbands.
"He rhapsodizes to himself that he’ll immortalize his love for Gata".
"Gata, with no answer from her window"
"The doctors are studying the image, then running Pablo back in again due to problems locating an actual brain."
"He flirts his way out"
Another misadventure for Pablo. I'm beginning to understand Lorenza's over-protectiveness of her middle child. He really shouldn't be allow to leave his room unaccompanied by an adult.
Fela - "Every rose has its thorn
Just like every night has its dawn
Just like every cowboy sings his sad, sad song
Every rose has its thorn"
Ines - thanks but no thanks
Pablo - in my dreams I can fly
Rita - turn around let me see the back
Esmeralda - come out, come out, wherever you are
Lorenza - squatter
Mariano - hot for teacher
Fernando - never dreamed it would be this hard to train a cat
For the most part, we have not been subjected to too many ridiculous plot points...but serisouly, it's time for Meatball to go. And if the only reason they are keeping Rita around is for some corny love story with glasses guy that's going to be annoying.
To make up for it, I guess, we have the lovely Monika Sanchez. I see another "el es mio!" "No, mio!" tug of war for the next 50 episodes. I wouldn't doubt it if Heli-mommy latches on to New Girl to save her thumb-sucking baby boy from the clutches of the evil Gata! Oh, well, at least she's (MS) pretty to look at.
I wish they would bring someone handsome and intelligent for Esme to give Dull Pablum a run for his money.
Exit Monica...enter Monika. Now. Pablo can be her boy puppet.
I think the advances showed Lorenza telling Gata that Pablo was dead, and Gata repeating this un verified nonsense to FDLSC. Nooooo.
I think that meatball is just going to wander through the next half of this novela being repeatedly thwarted in his attempt to capture Miss Kitty as some kind of comic relief.
Thank you for the recap.
The dance of love continues.
Gata gazes from her window, asking the universe for Pablo's location. No answer.
Lovers' reunion spoiled by the fickle finger of fate, telenovela style.
The doctors send Pablo through the scanner again because they couldn't locate an actual brain.
He has a head injury and also he has a case of depression and stress from a loving family.
Son, what do you need? Another mother for starters.
Gata is wondering Pablo where are you? How about asking the park what happened to Pablo?
Please La Paloma no more. I can't take it, I've got too much of a good thing already.
David---LOL Yes!!! Let's hear some more of Augie's drunken insights.
Tofie---I'm nominating you for the Novela Hall of Fame.
Pablo shouldn't be allowed to leave his room unaccompanied by an adult.
Fernando---It's so hard training a cat.
No, Pablo can't fly.
OK one of my own thoughts. Has anyone ever thought about predestination? I've often wondered about that. How many times have there been two brothers
in the same house with the same opportunities and one turns out good and one bad? In this case it's Gata and Ines. Gata says---I
don't have money but I have dignity, values and a soul that's not for sale. WOW!!~!!~!! What a
statement. Then you have Ines with the same environment and background but she has decided to go in another direction. I had hopes for Ines. She's nice looking when she gets spiffed up.
She was going to school and studying to get ahead but then the train went off the tracks. Get a job and work for a living or rob people and take their money
Right vs. wrong. Ines just doesn't want to choose right? A soul for sale or predestination?

I couldn't get Pablo's complete diagnosis last night 'cuz I couldn't write fast enough. I went back just now since I could pause and replay, so here it is:
Doctor tells Mariano and Lorenza that Pablo has a severe head injury from the fall. The analysis revealed melanin and neurotransmitter deficiency, due to exposure to stress, insomnia, and lack of food, leading to major depression. They will keep him under observation as well as treating the head injury.

Are we genetically engineered to turn out a certain way, or are our life experiences the overwhelming determinant?
I don't think Ines and Gata had equivalent home experiences while growing up. Ines was always favored and allowed to get away with murder (figuratively) while Gata was abused physically and mentally, and forced into providing for the family's food needs, and was denied any access to a formal education (although, I would argue that she got a very good education in real world interactions).
Ines, never feeling any negative feedback for any of her actions, no matter how outrageous, grew to feel entitled, while Gata's experience interacting with a variety of people provided her with a good personality and finally a way out of her situation. Although she fell into a rich family by chance, I think she would have succeeded at some level anyway, unlike Ines whose world view is condemning her to always seeking the easy way out.
David
Tofie: your sense of humor should be registered as a lethal weapon! (Ken stumbling around the dump holding Barbie and Ken dolls.) Love it!
My favorite scene: Lorenza said she would rather see Pablo dead than consorting with that low woman (La Gata), which Mariano later reminds her of this at Pablo's hospital bedside, and she screeches at him to shut up. I'm still liking that complex and interesting young man Mariano.
