La Gata #38- Wed 10/22 - La Reunión

Pablo's enjoying baby time and vowing to re-marry their mom ASAP so they can all be together again and Pablo can watch the babies grow up.  Cue Aerosmith's "Don't Want To Miss A Thing."

Gata, inexplicably, is hanging out with Principe at her former Pablo-rendezvous point.  Obligatory shot of the "Pablo + Gata" carving.  Principe whines.  Gata remembers some pre/teen flirting.  Gata calls this their little "loma" (hill).  Pablo shows up to join her in the tree.  Smoochies ensue.

Lorenza tells Augie they have to accept Gata.  Augie is still resistant.  And he doesn't think Fernando will drop the charges.  Um…didn't Fernando say that wasn't part of the deal?  Lorenza tells him it's this or jail, so Augie says they'll do it.  Frankly, if I were Gata, I'd be ok with the groveling, but I would NOT want to live with them.

Gata thinks this is all a dream and Pablo suggests she not wake up.  He says he'll never let anyone interfere with their lives again.  You mean like last time, when you promised you'd always love her?  Just saying. Gata feels like she's gotten the old Pablo back.

Ines scolds Rita about taking care of herself like Gata told her to and then goes off to engage in nefarious doings.  Rita yells at Ines.  Chácharas shows up, inexplicably, with his usual "piropos" (flirty compliments)…and those are inexplicable as well, given Rita.  He calls her the salsa on his tacos and the lime in his tequila.  Dude.  That's kinda hot.  Rita's baffled at how he found her, but Chácharas has contacts, yo.  He keeps trying to get her to smile at him.  It's a little creepy, given Rita.

Pablo doesn't want any explanations from Esme, just 1000 kisses.  Stop it, Pablo, don't make me like you.  Esme vows eternal love, beyond death.  More smoochies ensue.

Rita tries to claim Esme as her granddaughter as a way to tell Chácharas that he's not good enough for her.  Rita asks if he has any vices, and claims her vice is eating…not that she gets to eat much around there, just bread and water.  Ay, Rita, up to her usual tricks.  Chácharas can't wait to bring some takeout back to Rita's hut.  I think this is a case of love at first bite.  And again I ask…where is all the money that Fernando and Gata giving her going?  Speaking of Fernando, here he is to find out what Rita had to tell him.

Gata gives Jarocha the smoochies and promises update.  Jarocha calls love a "sarampion" (measles) that doesn't go away no matter how much you vaccinate.  That's…poetic…I guess.  Gata says they just both happened to show up at their usual spot because they both needed to go there and Gata prayed to God and poof!  Pablo appeared.  He didn't, however, say anything about the "meeting" for him to officially ask for her hand.  The "anvil" sound effect plays while Pablo paints and thinks that finally, all the misunderstandings are over.

Rita babbles at Fernando without saying anything.  She claims there's just too much stuff in her head, 'cause she's old.  Fernando starts to leave, since she won't get to a point, which baffles him because Rita's been trying to tell him something for a while now.  Rita agrees that she's just talking nonsense, so if words won't come out, she'll show him.  She drags him over to Fela's, but Fela isn't home.  Fernando's not getting it and he has better things to do with his time.  Rita goes chasing after him and then decides to just tell him…crazy Fela isn't really Fela…well, she is, but she isn't….  Fernando tells her to shut it…then turns around and sees Fela…and Fela sees him…and time stops (while Erica Bunefil's hair blows out behind her and off her face)….

Osorio and Damian can't reach Fernando on his cell phone.  Osorio got word that the Martinez Negretes accepted and are going to make the engagement official.  Damian is thrilled, but has no idea where his boss is.

Fela runs up and happily introduces herself as Fela...and then tries to show him her doll.  He wants her to come with him, but she can't leave her "daughter" Renata (the doll).  Fernando hugs her and Fela lets him, but she looks a little confused about why.  Fernando looks like he wants to cry.

Mariano visits Pablo at the mural.   Mariano needles Pablo about needing to earn respect.  Mariano explains that their parents aren't accepting Gata out of the goodness of their hearts and to please Pablo like Pablo thinks.  Silencioso made them do it. Mariano says that their parents are just using Pablo yet again and he ought to be embarrassed.

Fernando tells Rita he doesn't understand QTH is going on here.  Rita doesn't know what happened to Blanca either, for her to be like this.  Fernando yells at Rita and scares Blanca.  He demands that Rita explain, since she was supposed to be with Blanca.  Rita explains that the last time she saw Blanca, Blanca was dying, so when "the man" gave Gata to her (and now, in the flashback, "the man" doesn't have Augie's chin) and told her that Blanca was dead, she believed him.  Rita tells Fernando that Augie wasn't his only enemy.  Someone hated Blanca and Rita never found out who.

Augie is looking at Blanca's old picture again.  He tells it that the baby was the only thing getting in their way.  He thought without her around, he and Blanca would be happy and he would leave Lorenza (and the kids?) for her.  But now he doesn't know where she is.

Fernando explains to Fela that someone did this to her and he'll get revenge.  Rita offers to keep taking care of Fela, but Fernando says that's his job now.  His wife needs him.

Pablo thinks Mariano is right, but he doesn't care--he has Esme back.  And they've smooched and she still loves him.  Mariano seems offended that Pablo dared to kiss her.  He tells Pablo he'll never be happy with Esme.

Mariano hits a punching bag and vows to break Pablo and Esme up because Pablo isn't worthy of her.  He'll only fall for his parents' schemes again, but Mariano won't.  Esme deserves better…a man to love her and to be the father to her children.  And that's Mariano.  Even if he has to fight the devil himself to have her.

Pablo and Esme have an "I love you/I love you more" fight in her foyer.  Pablo tells Esme that Mariano said that his parents are plotting something again.  He slips up a little and refers to Silencioso as her father, bugging Esme.  Then they get right back to "u+me=4eva" and smoochies.

Lorenza lines up a newspaper photographer and an exclusive interview about the engagement.  Augie drinks.  Lorenza denies that she's actually happy about this--she's just trying to meet Silencioso's demands.  She blames Augie for this, because the pictures were his idea, and reminds him that he has to give Esme a public apology.  Mariano overhears Lorenza saying that they have to play along "for now" and not to treat her like the bad guy here.  Mariano chimes in that she is the bad guy--like all the rest of the Martinez Negretes.

(Hey!  Lupita from DQTQTQ was in a Honey Bunches of Oats commercial!)

Mariano warns his parents that whatever they're planning won't work because Pablo and Esme love each other too much, but the families hate each other too much.  The engagement will fail.  Lorenza accuses him of wanting that because he's in love with her.  Mariano agrees and tells them he's going to make a play for Esme.  And he can't just "forget" about her like Augie wants, any more than Augie can "forget" to be a "maleante" (criminal).  Augie wonders what that girl gave his sons.

Carlos is upset that Virginia is being locked up in the house so much.  Virginia blames it on that maldita chismosa Dorila.  Only she doesn't say maldita, because Virginia is too nice for that.  Carlos doesn't blame her parents for thinking he's not good enough for her because he doesn't think he's good enough for her either.  "I can't even read."  Virginia insists she'll teach him…even though she can't see the letters…she'll teach him to read Braille.

Pablo wants he and Esme to promise each other that other people's hate won't break them up.  Principe looks on  and shakes his head at them.  Esme invites him up to see the kids, but Pablo keeps stopping her for smoochies.

Mariano is trying to recruit Monica, but her lack of anger baffles him.  Monica has found inner peace.  Her mother, on the other hand, agrees with Mariano.  Although Monica is surprised to hear about their engagement party, she thinks it's great.  Mariano tries to whip her into a frenzy and get her to "fight" for Pablo.  Her mom doesn't think Pablo deserves her, but she thinks Monica has to do something.  Pobre Monica!  She's found her spine and now these two are trying to bend her to their will.  She looks worried.

Pablo and Esme hang out with the babies while Pablo wonders why he made that stupid promise to his mother (about not saying anything to Esme about the engagement?) and Esme wonders why Pablo isn't saying anything about the engagement.  Fernando arrives with Fela and explains that Fela is going to stay with them from now on.  Pablo thinks something is up.  He hands Leti back to Esme so she can go find out what Fernando is up to.

Fernando talks love to Blanca.  He's feeling young again.  Blanca is feeling…well, she's feeling Fela.  She's focusing on her doll baby.  Fernando says Esme looks like the two of them.  Fela avoids a real conversation by saying that "Renata" is sleepy now.  Fernando says they have to find out what happened to her.  When Fernando starts crying, Fela says he looks like her husband when her husband was dragged away.  (Are they seriously trying to make us believe the house in all the flashbacks isn't the same house the Martinez Negretes are living in now? Hello, marble foyer!)  Fela has a bad reaction to remembering that and refuses to make the leap from Fernando looking like her husband to actually being her husband.  When Esme comes in, Fela is back to saying her daughter was taken.  Fernando tells Esme that Fela is his wife.

When we return from a commercial break, Fernando is finishing telling Esme "the story."  Except for the part where Esme is "Renata."  Esme is excited for them to find their daughter.  Fela seems to be accepting Fernando's physical affection while not actually seeming to understand what's going on.  In the midst of all the happy talk, Fernando brings up "revenge" again.

Back at his apartment, Pablo talks about how he can't wait to propose to Esme tomorrow and how they'll never let anything separate them ever again.  The "anvil drop" sound happens again.  We get it, sound guys, we get it.

Tomorrow: Lorenza announces; Monica flirts; Augie drunks.

Come on, now, "The Guy" definitely had Augie's chin last time someone flashed back to him, right? And that's totally the MN house, right? What are they trying to pull?!

Sorry, y'all, I just noticed how many times I used the word "baffled." What can I say...there was a lot of bafflement this episode!

So, yeah. I'm totally confused because that is NOT the same chin!!

Was that little Leti playing the role of little Renata?

And here's my rant for the day (don't go getting your panties in a twist about my negativity, folks.):

This is what drives me batty about this show-consistency. We get episodes like we got on Tuesday which are complete filler, nothing new is said or really happens, and we also get episodes like the rodeo fight/kiss and last night's well acted/written/filmed reunion. Why can't we consistently get well done episodes?!

GAH!

5ft, thank you for this grand tour through an anvil creating set of events.

Pablo and Esme thinking that all bad influences are over and they are totally cool for the future?

Mariano lying his ass off to his brother, then stomping off in a huff wearing skin tight green pants?

Rita smiling at the hospital gown guy - doesn't she file her teeth to points?

Monica slipping toward the dark side? O you blaspheming writers, how dare you?

Augie, please drink more and more and more. I am starting a fund to buy alcohol for Augie in case family funds run out. I want to pickle his liver and decompose his mind.

And speaking of Augie, what is the connection with Blanca. Were his actions against Fernando fueled by jealousy?

gringo I went back to the patio last night and added 20 pounds to all the anvils we have in stock.

David

I'll donate to the booze fund.

Diva, thank you for the great, great recap! I was away both Tuesday and Wednesday nights. Sorry to miss the Fela reveal, but thanks to your meticulous recap it's like I saw the whole episode!

David: sorry I missed Mariano in the tight green pants. Were there any necklace sightings?

Anyway glad to be back on the patio safe and sound.

J in Oregon

5ft Thanks a mil for such a wonderful Wednesday bonus with my morning coffee.

Is it just me or has Mariano’s looks changed from handsome, sexy to sleazy. When I look at him now I ask myself why I ever thought he was handsome. I guess it’s true that “beauty is as beauty does”. I was hoping you’d tell him to shut up already.

I was wondering why Pablo revealed to Esme that Silencio was her father after promising Jarocha that he wouldn’t. I didn’t realize that it was a slip of the tongue and the present Pablo wouldn’t have betrayed Jarocha.
Thanks for clearing that up.

I also noticed that the caped man didn’t look like Augie. What’s up with that? Augie’s reminiscing clearly implicated him.

Previews don’t look good for our couple.

Awesome Kat.

"He calls her the salsa on his tacos and the lime in his tequila. Dude. That's kinda hot."

"I think this is a case of love at first bite."

"Pablo and Esme have an "I love you/I love you more" fight in her foyer."

"(Hey! Lupita from DQTQTQ was in a Honey Bunches of Oats commercial!)"

Kat, it seemed to me the flashback was a revision of the event according to Rita's new story for Fernando's benefit. The other flashbacks with the chin were Blanca's and likely more representative of the truth.

Mariano - snake oil salesman

Monica - but I'm ok with lukewarm and no froth

Augie - how do you compete with crazy

Fernando - "Hello,
Is there anybody in there?
Just nod if you can hear me.
Is there anyone at home?"

Fela - "If you're happy and you know it, then your face will surely show it
If you're happy and you know it, clap your hands."

Esmeralda - me & Pablo are gonna go play in my room, ok?

Pablo - never make a promise you will not break

Rita - something for nothing

Thanks Kat! Great recap. Luckily I saw the last episode with the flashback to the hooded man taking Blanca's baby and handing her to Rita, so I can also confirm that in the flashback shown last night, both the man and his voice had changed. I also had a QTH moment on that. I guess we'll learn what really happened soon enough.

I was happy to see Esme and Pablo happy and kissing, and Fernando finally finding Blanca! Maybe now she will get the mental/medical attention she needs to get well.

I was utterly confused by Monica allowing herself to be pulled back into the Negrete craziness. Totally inconsistent character development!

Ahh! 5ft. Thank you! So enjoyable: to tone and humor of your recap fits the episode exactly. I have to go back and watch on hulu+ though, pesky family interrupted my viewing. So this makes up for yesterday's bleh episode.

I like this: "Stop it, Pablo, don't make me like you." This and the re-hash of baby-snuggling started the episode off for me with some dreamy sighs!

"the man" doesn't have Augie's chin" - yah . .I notice that! Of course Augie is behind the disappearance of baby Renata so I guess that was one of his flunkies.

"Mariano seems offended that Pablo dared to kiss her." Uh, Mariano, he's done more than that! So we've got the answer to what is Monica going to do the rest of the show: have a Martinez Negrete hand up her. . uh back. . .Monica the dummy. Too bad!

"Principe looks on and shakes his head at them." Yah Principe, I feel you!

Thanks 5ft, La Diva del Desierto! See y'all later, s'posed to be at work!

Lila

Thanks for that great recap 5 Foot.

"Principe looks on and shakes his head". Hah!

I think Mariano stole Hernan's pants from the La Tempestad set.

I thought the reunion scene between Blanca and Fernando was very well acted. Even the music was well done.

I missed that Augie felt the baby was an impediment to his plans with Blanca, and I was thinking maybe Lowrentza knew about Augie's obsession with Blanca and arranged for the baby napping as revenge.

Strangely, I thought the new chin was attached to the actor playing Osorio. Mr. LN does not believe that they would show different actors to represent different viewpoints, he thinks they just shove any available actor under the hood and shoot. We'll see.

Thanks again!

I confess LN that it crossed my mind that is was Osorio's chin.

Gracias, Sara, I agree with you about the consistency. I feel like if we graded every episode somehow, like +1 for every plot development or +1 for every scene that was essential to moving the show forward and plotted them out it would look like a roller coaster. There's no good reason some of what happened tonight couldn't have happened yesterday. Every time we get an episode like this, it makes me suspect the one immediately following will be a dud. Like they crammed all their really good ideas into one night and forgot they still had more episodes to write!

Gracias, David, work those anvils! People need to pay! I will contribute to the Augie drinking fund. He's way more fun when he's been drinking. I understood that he had a thing for Blanca, but he's acting like they had some kind of actual relationship and I wonder if that part of it was all in his head.

Gracias, J, I'm glad to be of service :D

Gracias, Missy R, Mariano's hawtness is starting to wane for me as well. When he had the conflict of "I want her, but I can't do that to my brother" he was more complex and complexity is sexy and now he's just...typical. Yes, Pablo accidentally said something about "our parents" and Esme gave him a nasty look and said Silencioso wasn't her father, so he covered with "Um, I mean, he acts like your father, yeah...let's smooch some more."

Gracias, tofie, I'll clap my hands when Fela knows why she's clapping her hands. I can never tell with her whether she's in the moment or in her own head or what...until she opens her mouth and starts talking about the doll.

Gracias, Vivi. Inconsistent character development...yes! Why she even let them into her apartment or didn't move away and go start a career somewhere is beyond me. And Mama's logic doesn't even make sense...she thinks Monica was humiliated by being left at the altar and she doesn't want Monica with Pablo, but having Monica go after Pablo AGAIN won't be humiliating?

Gracias, Lila. Thanks for validating my interpretation of Principe's facial expression.

Gracias, LN, I think you may be right about Lorenza being involved, but I don't know if it was with getting rid of Esme/Renata or maybe she's the one who made Blanca vanish. I also agree with Mr. LN that the weird chin switch isn't intentional, it's just laziness.

Mariano has stupid hair.

Gracias, Eli. I don't know why your comment is cracking me up, but it is!

So, Mariano is overemphasizing his receding hairline by trying to gel it into a point in the middle. Meanwhile, Pablo is doing the big pointed-up wave in the front. Clearly, Augie had to steal the money to pay for their styling products!

wonder how many times pablo stuck that wave in the mural paint

Lol, tofie! For the sake of realism, it should happen at least once. And he ought to be getting paint on his clothes, too.

I like Tofie's version of why the 2 hooded men are different. For one thing I think the change was intentional on the part of the writers and as Vivi said we'll learn what really happened. The switch was too obvious for me to believe the writers would think we wouldn't notice.

I noticed in Rita's version that Blanca had not run out of the house down the steps and collapsed as she did in Blanca's version. Way too convenient for Rita to omit Blanca knew her involvement

I could believe Rita altering the story to make herself look as not-guilty as possible.

And will we ever learn the objective truth about what happened? Blanca/Fela isn't a reliable narrator--she's not herself now and when it happened she was sick. Rita's a big liar. Augie, I would have believed his version of events before, but now he has this weird fantasy that he was going to run away with Blanca. Fernando wasn't around to know.

I don't know who could come forward at this point and say "Ok, here's what happened" and I would believe it.

Thanks 5ft Diva---As always it's superb.
So Gata feels like she's got the old Pablo back. Yes he's the old Pablo alright and he will show us all tonight when Monica goes to work on him, I can't wait. Must see tv.

Diva--Love is like the measles, that's poetic I guess. LOL That's a good one. I've never heard that before.

The laugh of the morning---Augie wonders what that girl gave his sons? That is so funny, I'm still laughing.

I noticed hoodie guy too. Different chin, different voice. It sounded like Augie the first time but not this time.

A hot pink and black striped bowtie and now green pants. Is this guy normal? Look out Esme.

David---Pickle his liver and decompose his mind was good for another morning laugh. Yes, I think that Augie is much better when he is half soused. I'll contribute a bottle of Cognac or Scotch, which ever he prefers, to the Augie drinking fund. Actually I think that it matter's, he'll drink anything but I don't think that he's a beer man. He's more refined and seems to stick to the higher more dignified refined spirits.

David---It is starting to look like Ms. Monica is slipping into the dark side of life. We need to keep an anvil ready for her just in case.

J in Oregon---Lowrenza never runs out of matching necklaces. If robbers ever hit the Negrete mansion they could live for a month just on the profits of necklace sales alone.

Tofie---Monica says I'm ok with lukewarm and no froth. You're so funny.

Fireworks tonight---must see tv.
the gringo

Gracias, gringo! Maybe Augie drinks beer, but only if it's imported and only out of a glass...NEVER the bottle! Que horror! I hope you're right and we do get some fireworks tonight...and not all in the last five minutes either. These people really do not know how to throw a fun party.

I find now I'm more interested in what Mariano is gonna show up in than any of the girls. Pity he can't do more with his hair.

As long as it's bright. I didn't like that denim-looking shirt with the tuxedo at the last fancy shindig. Maybe this time he'll wear a tie with a pattern of cat's eyes :)

Carlos. Go down to the river. Wash yourself and beat your clothes against a rock. You're being set up to be offed because you're too grimy and filthy to be in Virginia's life! Mark my words man!

Lila

I think you're right, Lila. The minute Lorenza has any brain cells to spare from worrying about the family's impending financial doom, she'll turn her attention to Carlos.

La Diva: Why does Virginia's mother hate her so much ?

What did Virginia do to get so much hostility?

Steve, not a darn thing. I think it started with Virginia being blind in the first place, then even when she was a child she was quietly rebellious and refused to think of poor people as scum. So, as far as Lorenza is concerned Virginia is defective.
