La Gata #40- Friday 10/24 In which the Martinez Negretes crash their own “party”

(Hi, all.  Lila here subbing.  Please feel free to fill in any blanks or correct/add dialogue I missed or messed up.  My respect for all recappers goes up each time I attempt this.  What troopers you all are.  I don’t have the snark and snap of some but I hope you can figure out what happened!)

We are back at the joyless gala to announce the engagement of Pablo and Esmerlda and Pablo’s refusal to rescue Esme from the cruel barbs hurled down from the ornate wrought-iron catwalk.  The invited guests murmur in shock as Augustine addresses the press, waves in Esme’s direction and lifts his glass in a mock toast to her.   Esme stands and tells Fer it’s no use, they will never accept her.  Fer hisses to Esme that the MN’s have signed their death sentence.  Pablo finally appears with his Mom taking up the rear.

“Why?”  Pablo asks, “because my parents have shown at the last minute that they are not afraid of you?”  “No, “Fer fires back, because they’re dirty rats.”  Pablo demands that Fer respects his Parents.  Esme tries to head off an argument and in the first show of “courage” during this whole fiasco he puts his hands on his hips and challenges Esme:  “What?  You know about this humiliation he has planned for my family?”  “As aware as you were of what they did to me, kidnapping me and sending compromising photos so you would think the worst of me!”  “But I didn’t believe them.  I believe in you.”  Esme and Fer attempt to leave, Pablo asks her to stay.  The hate and rancor is stronger than the both of them she says.  Above everything else, Pablo declares, I love you.  And I love you Esme answers, but it’s clear love isn’t enough.  The reporters want to know if the engagement is still on.  Esme hesitates and Pablo asks her to answer the question before she goes.  She stares at him.  Fer throws the ball back into Pablo’s court:  do you really want to marry Esmerelda, the Mother of your children?  We await your response.  Fernando actually thanks the Lorenza for the party as he, Esme and Blanca take their leave.

They return home, Esmerelda is at once dejected and angry, she accepts Blanca’s comfort but reproaches Fernando  and runs up the stares.  Fer vows to Meche that he will avenge his daughter for the humiliation she suffered tonight.

Lorenza and Mariano debrief about the nights events.  She gloats over the humiliation Fer and Esme received but Mariano counters that Pablo and Esme defended their love and the ones humiliated were the Martinez Negretes.  Lorenza remarks more to herself that she has a bad feeling that their misfortunes are not over and she fears the impact of tonight on Augustine:  she’s afraid for his very life.

Cut to Augustine lying in bed, he’s eye clenched tightly but it’s not the shame of welcoming “La Gata” into his home that he bemoans, it’s the shocking reappearance his long lost love,  Blanca.  He hears her calling him the devil as he recounts all the unselfish acts of love he performed for her:  putting her husband in prison and disappearing their baby and now she has the ingratitude to be with Fernando again. . .he can’t stand it!

Esme is furious she fumes to Jarocha their common cowardice for defending their love against the bitter rejection she feels from the high society folks and the divisive force of their families mutual hatred.  Oh, they’re just jealous now that you’re a beautiful princess Jarocha offers.  Esme doesn’t even know if they’re engaged.  She was so happy but now happiness seems impossible.

Pablo is thinking similar desperate thoughts at his parents home as Monica enters asking if he feels bad.  How do you expect me to feel Pablo asks.  Everything your parents did was for your good she offers.  You can’t abandon your parents now.  No says Pablo, I gotta think about ME and my happiness is Esmerelda and my children.  Monica looks stricken.

Back to Esme and Jarocha who is arguing Fernando’s case for pressing on with the venganza.   Esme is not willing to sacrifice her love for Pablo for gratitude to El Silensioso.  She does not want to see Pablo hurt and is willing to leave his house and give up everything for the love of Pablo!

In their darkened room Augustine lies on the bed feigning sleep while Lorenza begs him to talk to her, to listen.  He silently whines that he doesn’t want to listen to anyone, least of all her . . .nobody knows how he aches for his secret love, Blanca. . .she is his, only his.  Lorenza rises from the foot of the bed:  okay, tomorrow we talk. . .rest. . .I’m undone. . .As soon as she leaves Augustine opens his tear-filled eyes.

Back at Fernando’s Meche tries to plead the case that everything would be easier if he would tell Esme that he and Blanca are her parents.  No, he wants to clear his name and he must press on with his plan to punish the MN for he can pass over what they did to him but he can never forgive the harm they did to her.  And Pablo must come to him and ask for Esme’s hand or (and he swears by Dios) he’ll not have her nor his children.

Lorenza has turned in for the night and lies next to a seemingly feverish Augustine who is still tormented by the sound of Blanca’s voice calling him the devil.  He opens his eyes, gets out of bed and panting, falls back, gasping and then is still.  Lorenza does not stir.  Morning finds Augustine in the same position.  Lorenza, unable to rouse him begins to scream.  Mariano and Virginia wake up.  Lorenza calls Pablo on the phone.  Your Father is dead! she cries to Pablo.  Pablo rushes over but he has found a faint pulse.  Virginia and Lorenza cries as Mariano lets the Doctor in who examines him and calls an ambulance:  Augustine appears to have had a stroke.

Fernando and Damian have a confab in the study which serves simply to confirm that Augustine will not escape the wrath of Fernando, the venganza will continue!

Pablo is at Augustine’s bedside when Lorenza flies into the room, throws down her purse and rips into him.  Are you satisfied, she asks.  Between you and that woman you’ve almost killed your Father!  You would prefer he die!”  Mariano is ineffective in squelching her rant and a Doctor has to come in to demand the yelling stop, that Augustine’s health comes first and if they can’t respect that they can all leave!

Fela/Blanca in a beautiful purple dress, her hair cascading in loose dark curls like Esme’s wails that she’s afraid of the devil.  Esme helps to calm her and reassure her that if she sees a Doctor he can help her regain her memory and be happy again.  Fela/Blanca is afraid, she doesn’t want Esme to go.  Esme tells her she will always look after her and be in touch with her, even though she may have to leave the home.  They lock eyes, smiling through their tears.  They embrace.

Rita and her boyfriend provide a break from the high drama with his usual teasing and flirting and her half-hearted protests.

Back at Fer’s house, Esme holds Principe and talks to Meche who tries to get Esme to understand Fernando.  Esme is just wondering where is Pablo and if he will hate her if Fernando presses the case against the MN.  She and her children have been hanging in a torturous limbo.

The Dr. confirms the results of the tests on Augustine:  he has had a stroke and will suffer a partial paralysis, he will be an invalid.  There’s nothing they can do now but wait.  He could have some improvement once the inflammation in his brain abates.  The MN boys surround and tenderly embrace Lorenza.  Later alone with Augustine at his hospital bedside she wonders how long this vengeance will go on:  until his grave?

Carlos is with Virginia at the MN mansion, comforting her as she cries and frets over her father.  They embrace and profess their love to one another.

Back at Fernando’s Esme is holding her beautiful babies when the phone rings.  It’s for her.  Lorenza has called and told her about Augustine’s stroke.  Esme goes immediately to talk to Fernando, to ask him to call off his plans.  The answer is predictable:  Absolutely no.  Esme puts her head in her hands.

Back to Rita and her boyfriend where she claims to have met Rudolf Valentino who fell in love with her.  Boyfriend is not impressed.

Fela/Blanca is about the go to the Doctor, she pushes the you’re my daughter thing with Esme and Fernando takes her away.  In the car Fernando appeals to her to wait, the time is not right to tell her.  Blanca seems to be getting more clear all the time.

Now we are at Augustine’s bedside.  Pablo talks to him tenderly and smiles tearfully as his Dad wakes up for the first time.  Augustine opens one eye and tells Pablo with a twisted mouth to get out, he doesn’t want to see him, get out he weakly shouts.  Pablo retreats, crying and goes to get his mother, telling her that Papa needs her.

Days Later.  Augustine returns home in motorized wheelchair and is greeted warmly by the household staff.  Augustine chews them out then turns to Pablo and asks him to leave, to get out of his sight!  Lorenza tries to takes up for Pablo and encourage him to change his attitude as he’s going to need all of their help, all of his children.   Augustine is having none of it:  I’d rather be dead he growls through his mangled mouth as he rolls away.  I can’t stand this punishment from God!   Augustine wants to know where the action is against him and they try to dissuade him from thinking about it.   He roundly insults each of the children:  spoiled, blind and lazy.  Veronica tries to bring the flowers they offered earlier, he slings them away and slobbers loudly:  put them on my grave!  Virginia kneels at his chair side, says they love him and don’t want to lose him, he needs to rest.  He doesn’t reject her.

Down the street Fernando comes home with results on Fela’s exam.  Fela has no irreversible brain damage, no tumors, etc.  What she has is the product of pain, she has been taking refuge in fantasy world and in the past after the kidnapping of her baby and his own imprisonment.  They have to wait. . .she could get memory back anytime or never.  She is at the mercy of destiny.

Meche comes with a call for Esme.   She happily answers.  It’s Pablo.

Garabato and Ines in dingy afterglow in a filthy room.  She uses this opportunity to encourage her man to stretch the reach of his grubby grasp, to think of stealing things of greater value.

Pablo is back in their special open air love shack.  Esme arrives and runs into his arms.  I’m so happy you called!  Pablo is distraught:  I’m bad, worried, sad, there are only shouts in my house.  Pablo says Fernando won’t retire the complaint against my Father.  Esme says she knows and is not in agreement with it.  Pablo appears shocked and lays into her that she must do something.  She is the only one who has influence over this guy.  She’s got to do something!  She’s got to help them.  He glares at her darkly and she stares back, stunned.

Avances:  Augustine cusses Pablo again, Monica kisses Pablo again in view of Esme across the street and she shouts back “Hasta Nunca” to him.

Woo hoo! Thank you, Lila, for doing this recap...I'm off to read it now!

Wow, Lila, thanks very much for such a complete and very enjoyable recap!`It was an interesting episode and you did it full justice.

Augie's character has none of the complexity that makes a truly great villain. He rejects and belittles his family, but he comes off as a cranky fishwife instead of a powerful attorney.

Also, why does one of the twins always wear a little cap and appear to be asleep? The other twin is very cute and always awake. Do they have a plastic stand-in for Twin #2?

So, are P and E engaged, or no?

J in Oregon

And I'm back. I read fast.

Thank you, Lila! You captured the whiplash roller-coaster tornado-ness of this episode. No snark, you say? I disagree! Take this, for instance...

"He hears her calling him the devil as he recounts all the unselfish acts of love he performed for her: putting her husband in prison and disappearing their baby and now she has the ingratitude to be with Fernando again. . .he can’t stand it!" Ah, yes, poor Augie. So unappreciated, so misunderstood!... And then he starts screaming at everyone, including Vero and Virginia...not well done, Augie. And I can't even blame it on the stroke, 'cause he's been doing that for...well, ever.

I'm too tired to even work up a respectable amount of annoyance for Pablo. I'll have to settle for his behavior tonight being so typical that I'm not even surprised. Completely ignoring that what his parents did to Silencioso also hurt Esme? And then telling Esme that she has to call off Silencioso? When he's never been able to make his own parents take him seriously? So unfair to expect more out of her than himself. It's not attractive. Eh, maybe he'll take it back on Monday.

I love Blanca/Fela in purple. I wonder if they're going to make that her signature color. It does nice things for her eyes.

I thought I noticed the anvil sound effect when Virginia told Carlos that she doesn't even think Lorenza is her mother, but that might have been wishful thinking.

"So, are P and E engaged, or no?" Good question, J. It could be "no" because neither of them was willing to confirm it publicly...but then it could be "yes" because they'd already agreed between themselves that they were, and even if they didn't do the official "proposal" thing, neither of them broke it off either. I guess this is one of those situations the Facebook "It's Complicated" relationship status is made for.

Argh! And again the brain (what little they had to begin with) power flew out the window in the face of an emergency: I find my husband passed out and not moving, seemingly dead ... do I call 911 (or equivalent) for an ambulance and to get some first aid advise? Call for my grown son who lives at home or one of the staff to call? Start some semblance of CPR? Of course not! What I do is call my other grown son, who does NOT live at home, then wait for him to come over from who knows how far away, wait for him to come over and THEN call the doctor (still no 911). Then, together with my whole family, stand around and wring our hands as we wait for the doctor to come over. Then when the doctor gets her, instead of shutting up so he can examine the "dead dude" I yell and scream and nag at him so he has to tell me to shut up so he can get on with his business. Only THEN does the (also moronic) doctor decide he needs to call an ambulance! Ay, caray!

Anon @1:53, you know, when you put it that way...Augie should probably be dead. And the kids ought to be considering signing up with Life Alert or something.

wowie zowie Lila

"he recounts all the unselfish acts of love he performed for her: putting her husband in prison and disappearing their baby and now she has the ingratitude to be with Fernando again"

"he slings them away and slobbers loudly: put them on my grave!"

JnO "Do they have a plastic stand-in for Twin #2?" Looked like it to me

Boy, sumpin really nasty lies behind them eyes. Pablo is a wifebeater waiting to happen.

Lila, thank you for jumping into the breach and producing this very well done synopsis. Among other snarky jibes, I enjoyed you referring to the MN's balcony as a "catwalk."

Anon @ 1:53, like you, I find the way tn medical emergencies are addressed to be ridiculous. They never do the reasonable thing and just call 911 or whatever it is in Mexico, and they always have the doctor come to the house and make his assessment using the diagnostic equipment he can carry in his little black bag. And, when they finally get the patient to the hospital and run blood, MRI, and other sophisticated tests, the doc is always right!

Well, now we know the lengths Augie has gone to to prove his "love" for Blanca. And with the stroke stripping away his practiced veneer of respectability, we can finally peer into his true twisted psyche.

Dipstick Pablo still doesn't get how wronged the Silensioso family have been at the hands of his parents.

I am not liking where Monica is heading. Why are you still hanging around?

Looking forward to Blanca's complete recovery.

(Thank God this thing has a spell checker on it. I was all thumbs this morning.)

David

Masterful job, Lila! Thank you so much for helping Kat out. Your work is much appreciated.

I'm a heartless bitch because I laughed out loud at Augie on his scooter. But I will say that Juan Verduzco is doing a great job playing the stroke victim.

Thank you Diva for posting this! In the light of day after a few hours sleep my typos jump out at me but my beloved and loyal Gata fans, you make me feel right good!

J in Oregon: "he comes off as a cranky fishwife instead of a powerful attorney." Gosh yes! He's certainly not earned one ounce of empathy for me after this stroke! And yes, I noticed that about the twins. I just hope their not sedating the
little darling!

Diva: "You captured the whiplash roller-coaster tornado-ness of this episode." Oh, thank you!

"And then telling Esme that she has to call off Silencioso? When he's never been able to make his own parents take him seriously?"
Yeah! You're right and I'm sure Esme must've been thinking this, thus her thunderstruck look at the
end of the episode!

"Virginia told Carlos that she doesn't even think Lorenza is her mother"! QUE QUE WHAT!!!
Man! Did I ever miss THAT!! Thank you Diva, that is HUGE!! Could Rita have stolen somebody's
baby and sold it to Lorenza with Dorilla as the go-between. Remember they recognized each other! See. It takes a village to enjoy a novela: totally did
not catch that!

Anon at 01:53:00: Love your justified rant over the MN's "emergency response." Absolutely coo-coo! Maybe they're trying to show how much Pablo is being wronged by his Dad's rejection because he's the one who "discovered" that Augustine was not dead? NAH! It's just stoopid! Did you notice how the Doctor rolled his eyes as Lorenza was wailing?

tofie: "Boy, sumpin really nasty lies behind them eyes. Pablo is a wifebeater waiting to happen."
Tofie, you nailed it! What a dark and menacing look to match the ridiculous demand he made so aptly described by Diva. Esme needs to remember that glare!

David: "And with the stroke stripping away his practiced veneer of respectability, we can
finally peer into his true twisted psyche." Deliciously
expressed! Augustine is in the lower, hottest levels of his self-made hell and he's determined to bring the whole family with him!

Thank you all for thanking me and I would love to read a recap by all o' y'all: your observations
and rich, lively way of expressing them make reading comments an absolute treat!

Let's keep talking in between chores and errands y'all!

Lila

Thank you Sara! "I'm a heartless bitch because I laughed out loud at Augie on his scooter." No you're not, you're just a little further down on the continuum of not feeling empathy for him! Hee hee! Nothing about Augustine inspires warm fuzziness. The more I think about it, the man's a straight-out psychopath! As David noted his psyche is truly twisted and I think he's going to get crazier! Or. . .did I see him die again in the previews?

Lila

Pablos attraction (obsession with) to Esmeralda was because she was an orphaned stray. He was able to indoctrinate her with his view of himself and the world with little resistance and she gobbled it up and worshiped him for it. Now, there is a father in her life whose compulsion to protect her runs contrary to Pablo's requirement she lay at his feet. The boy has lost total control and it doesn't set well. First he runs to passively punish, then he berates, now he threatens and intimidates. What next, a knuckle sandwich, that he's convinced she asked for?

Virginia might be worried about Lorenza trying to send her to an institution.

Lila- I didn't catch that line either! I will definitely be rewatching today!

Question for Kat- I was mesmerized by Augie's post stroke eye. Sometimes he just seemed to be squinting and other times I honestly thought they had injected a local anaesthetic! Are there make-up techniques that can render an eye paralytic?

Yeah, I know it has nothing to do with the story....

Tofie, that darker interpretation of Pablo's relationship with Esme is unfortunately supported by what they've shown us thus far. That, taken with his Dad's twisted psyche could turn this into a gruesome tragedy. I'm pretty sure they won't get that dark but the sick game he looks like he's about to play with Monica is scary enough! Yikes!

Lila

Welcome Steve Boudreaux! I am definitely going to go back and listen to Virginia's heart to heart with Carlos. It could be that Virgiia understandably sees this as such a heartless act, it's as if Lorenza was not her mother. Time will tell.

Lila

Wow, commenters on fire this morning!
Lila, I also missed Virginia's comment questioning *maybe rhetorically* Lorenza being her mother. Of all her children Lorenza certainly treats Virginia with the least care. Your scenario explaining Dorila's fear of Rita was interesting.

Also, Hollywood hottie Rudolph Valentino died in the 1920's; Rita obviously didn't know this fact before claiming to be one of his love interests during her stay in the U.S. I'm bored with her and her galan, Mr Eyeglasses. Are they just lining up Rita with a sugar daddy as a reward for her repentance in the hospital? I would pay money for someone to give her a scrunchie for that scraggly hair.

J in Oregon

Thanks Lila! This recap with delightful! I was getting ready to go out when this was on, so I did not get any of the details. I did see Pablo make his demands that Esme stop El Silencioso right before I went out the door, and I was shaking my head as I did so.

He knows that his parents stole everything from El Sil, destroyed his life, threw him in jail for 20 years, and had a good old time doing it. Then they set out to destroy Esme with the same glee. PLUS, he knows what Esme doesn't-- that his parents deprived Esme of her father and HER rightful wealth, and they don't give a damn. Yet, it's HER responsibility to prevent El Sil (her father) from getting some justice, and sticking his tongue out at his criminal parents while he's at it? His logic just baffles. God, I wish there were a good galan #2 option around.

And what's with the radio silence from Pablo for days? Is it so hard for him to pick up the phone, or make a quick run over to Esme's house to tell her what's going on with his father? He's constantly building her hopes up, then leaves her hanging in uncertainty, before either dashing her hopes or feeding her more empty promises.

Pablo did get it a few days ago, David. I think it was while he was in the hospital, and he brought it up to Lorenza about Esme being Silencioso's daughter and "How could my father do this?" and her only response was to tell him he can't judge his father. The only thing he doesn't know about is Blanca/Fela. It seems like it's something he only remembers when it's convenient for him.

Lol, Sara...I only felt bad for Veronica and Vero...but not the rest of them. They could probably slap a mask on half his face to help him hold it still, but I think it would be difficult to have something both thin enough and inflexible enough.

Lila, typos? What's a few typos between friends? I neglected to comment on your title, which was so appropriate...they really did do it to themselves.

Steve and Lila, if they hadn't used that sound I keep thinking of as the "anvil" sound--the same one they kept playing every time Pablo announced that all his and Esme's troubles were over--I wouldn't have read anything into it. She did connect it with the idea of her mother being mean to her and how could a mother be so mean. So the sound could be meaningless, or it could be deliberate because she's really not Lorenza's daughter, or it could be there to make us suspicious. Lorenza has also said before that she doesn't know how Virginia could be her daughter, what with her penchant for charity.

tofie, I want to say "Oh, Pablo would never..." but I can't. He gets way too unpleasant when things don't go his way. One of the many things that hampers his attractiveness.

J, thanks for the info about Rudy Valentino!

Vivi, I don't get Pablo's passivity either. "Oh, I should wait for things to calm down before I go talk to her." Good luck trying that when/if you finally end up married and living together!

It reminds me of his parents passivity--they're just sitting around waiting for Silencioso to make a move and complaining that he's playing with them when they could be turning themselves in or fleeing the country or just generally doing something, anything to end the situation. Lorenza pushing everybody into having this party was the most proactive thing Team MN has done, and even then, Silencioso had to tell her that was what he wanted.

Vivi-The number one reason I don't think too hard about this show is because I would end up drawing the same conclusions that you have outlined in your comment.

I'm going to go seethe about Pablow now.

WOW!!! I thought that I was early today but there were nineteen comments already up before I started reading and twenty one by the time I finished.

A great show last night but a busy day for me today so I probably won't have time to comment until tonight or sometime tomorrow. Before I run, I just want to say----

Lila---You said that you don't have the snark or snap as some.
Well maybe not but you put together such a great recap that you had me hanging on almost every line. Don't sell yourself short, magnifico I say. Just a few examples of your great writing that caught my eye. #1 He growls through his mangled mouth
as he rolls away. #2 She is at the mercy of destiny, #3 Perfectly described when you wrote---Garabarto and Inas in dingy afterglow in a filthy room.

Lila---Gringo says that if you keep writing like this, you will end up in the recappers Hall
of Fame.
the gringo

The only thing that held me back some in my comment about Pablo is the fact this is a TN on at 7 eastern. If I saw this behavior in the real world I know it only a matter of time before she saw his fist. Jarocha and Mercedes outta be ringing alarm bells and heaven help the dude if Fernando sees it.

tofie, I'm waiting for Jarocha's reaction when Esme gets home and tells her about Pablo's demands. She'll be halfway across the street before Esme's finished talking.

Sara, I can only hope there's more maturing to come for Pablo. I mean, he can't get any worse, can he...shouldn't have said that out loud, nope, I should not have said that....

5ft, thank you for correcting me in your 11:11 comment. I am afraid that that scene and its significance went over my head. I can now see the reason for the angst you all are feeling toward Pablo, and especially his facial expression in that last freeze frame shot. Who in the world thinks like that?

Lila, I too agree with gringo that your title was great. The MN's iced their own cake with all that over-the-top behavior, and the facial expressions and hand motions of their guests told us all we need to know about their future place in polite society.

tofie, I have to admit that I thought you were being too hard on Pablo, but I have to admit that with each passing day he seems more like just one more horse's ass in the MN household.

David

David, yeah, Pablo is bugging the crap outta me. His anger is misplaced. All Fernando is doing is pursuing justice. Both his parents have admitted what they did, they just keep whining about how it's not fair they should have to pay for their crimes and Pablo is going along with it. It's sadly normal for him to have that misguided loyalty, it's just frustrating to watch--especially when he's aiming all his nastiness at someone he claims to love.

Lila - I haven't viewed the episode yet, but your vivid writing makes me feel like I did. Terrific title and recap.

I can't believe that Augie even hurled an insult at Virginia. But I'm actually looking forward to seeing him snarling at everybody else in his sorry family.

I love that Fernando doesn't give a damn about Augie's stroke and that he and Damian are still about the business of his venganza. But I wish Fernando would be a bit more gentle with Esme.

ITA with all the dissing of Pablo. Just once, I would like to see him show Monica the door. There's no reason to let her keep hanging around.

J in Oregon I'm with you with Rita and boyfriend! She looks old enough to have been a love interest of Rudolph Valentino! Rita is such classic Halloween fare it ain't even funny! Rita is such classic Halloween fare it ain't even funny! Maybe boyfriend will be an excuse for her to get gussied up!

Thak you Vivi and you are sooo right! How dare Pablo! He needs to exercise his testicular prowess against his thieving parents, not poor Esme. Wouldn't it be a hoot if, after she found at all the truths you helpfully remind us of she really went HASTA NUNCA Pablum and hooked up with a new galan! Now THAT would be novel!

Diva you're right about the boom/crash which signals us to pay attention. I gotta check hulu+. I DVRd the ep but my Comcrap constantly pixilates and the sound distorts at the same time. I can watch a quality version online. They do try to throw us off though. We'll just have to wait and see!

Awwww gringo! I am sooooo touched! Wow, man, you have made my day! Thanks! Screw the diet, I'm going to go eat a carmel apple behind this!!

David, Diva, Vivi, Pablo is indeed a piece of work. What we can expect? You ever see people who undergo a jaw-dropping transformation when they're around their family: the transformation can be absolutely astounding. Esme is meeting the other ide of the gentle lad that taught her to read in that idyllic dell so long ago.

Thank you Niecie! So glad to hear I did the ep justice. Sometimes those folks talk so fast! Yeah, Pablo is really tearing his a$$ with a lot of us. Damian needs to "talk" to him.

Lila

Thank you for the recap Lila!

The problem with Pablo is that it's all about him, his needs, his wants, his feelings. He seems to forget that his mother and father committed a great injustice towards Fernando and by extension Esmeralda, they are responsible for Fernando spending 20 years behind bars, for Fela being totally out of it and for the life of poverty that Esmeralda was subjected to. Esmeralda should have been the one growing up in a household with two parents that loved her, with an education and with food, instead she lived in poverty and away from two loving parents while the MN household got to enjoy comforts that did not belong to them-hell, they even took Fels rose bushes, the nerve!

And finally- stop using the cat as a f*cking prop, he is a living thing and clearly in distress, put him the hell down!

"especially when he's aiming all his nastiness at someone he claims to love."

and this is what bothers me. His father took a shot at her during the party and nothing but when he finally did come from under mama's muumuu he attacked Esmeralda when she gave a half hearten defense of Fernando, whom had just defended her. Yet, as they left, he started up with his sad eyes and do you love me, I love you, we're still good, right, whine. Will the real Pablo please stand up? How much unwarranted abuse should Esmeralda take till she has enough?

Pablo - oh, come on, she knows I'm joking

Lorenza - Augie dammit, wear a helmet

Augie - I'm ok with a pity date

The Doctor - get the nanny goat outta here, it ain't a barn

Ines - "I'll be a big noise with all the big boys, so much stuff I will own"

Rita - and after I dumped Warren, Annette Bening was his rebound

Esmeralda - are you mad at me

Fernando - not till I've completed all 800 things on my list

Eli Perez you are so right. You and Vivi give a nice summary of the vile injustice done by the MN against Esme, Blanca and Fer. Somehow the writers aren't making that case as well as you all do. The put the complaint into the mouth of Fer, yes, but he's become almost cartoonish. Pablo's anger against Esme should be forever silenced in the face of what his parents did! With what face does he defend them against her! Thanks for pointing this out and I think we need to keep doing so. And I feel you with poor Principe: he is often in distress!

Tofie, you did again! Your lists are da bomb! Thank you also for helping expose Pablo's weakness of character, hypocrisy and what's starting to look like the Martinez Negrete brand of psychosis! One can almost see a bitter, old Pablo whining about mi Esme, es mia, solo mia. . .

Lila

Yes Eli! I wish they would put the dawn cat down! Sometimes he looks miserable. I would much rather see him as set dressing or doing yoga on the couch. Poor Meche! Keeping that sofa hair free must be hell.

To keep reading comments or not to keep reading comments, that is the question.

The more analyses I read the more I realize how much I am taking at telenovela face value. Every set back to me is just another plot device. I'm going to make it my goal to start watching this with an attitude of "if this were real life."

Of course part of me can't get past pretty Daniel and every time hubs walks in he asks "where's the nun?" so it makes it even harder to really grasp how low Pablo is.

Or maybe I'm just a dumbass.

Damn cat. Not dawn cat. Dawn phone. Dammit!

Daniel has gotten uglier & uglier to me so guess he is doing a good job, I just don't understand where the bottom is with this Nablo guy. Last night I had a fly by hubby too, but he lingered long enough to catch the bit as Fernando, Felanca & Esmeralda were backing out the door with Pablo in pursuit whining just after tearing her a new one. Hubby, walked away but I heard him say quietly, xxxk him. Yep

Is this where they want to go or is Daniel overacting? Did he learn something playing Octavio, that stupid and pretty was pretty stupid and now showing his acting chops? Or is it Esmeralda is not an impulsive, angry imp so Pablo has to be impulsive, angry and impish for both? Well one thing for certain, tofie is one confused girl.

To be fair, Fernando is bout on my last nerve too.

Eli, I agree with you and Sara:
"stop using the cat as a f*cking prop, he is a living thing..."
Yes, the actor playing Principe needs to have ASPCA representation on set. I don't like the way animals (and sometimes babies) are treated on TNS. Principe's tail swishing meowling are clear indications that he is in distress. Has the actress been instructed not to put him down no matter what? It is very distracting.

Lila, thanks you are a great subber. I envy anyone who understands the details and can retell them with such finesse.

Last night I saw a side of Pablo that I personally had not seen before. Why in these novelas do things always have to get so ugly between the lovers before they make up in the last episode or two?

I understand what Silencio is trying to accomplish, but I don't agree with his method. Asking one's enemy for a public apology in front of God, the press, friends and family, for me was a set up for failure. It involved washing too much dirty laundry in public. Did he ever consider that maybe Esme wouldn't want the world to know that her future inlaws had treated her so badly. Why can't she have some input?

I thought it was just me but I also had noticed that Pablito looked more "doll like". If the writers were going to use a fake baby seems like they would have let the real baby be Pablito to really touch Pablo's heart. In that scene I had wondered why he practically ignored his son.

Tofie - El Sil is getting in my last damn nerve as well. It's clear that deep down he really doesn't give a fig about Esme and Fela's feelings. Esme is begging him to forget the plan for vengeance. All he cares about is the Revenge.

Thanks Missy R! "Did he ever consider that maybe Esme wouldn't want the world to know that her future inlaws had treated her so badly." Missy, Sara and everyone else El Sil is torqueing: his one dimensional, single-minded, selfish pursuit of vengeance in the name of those he supposedly loves is nerve-wracking and cartoonish BECAUSE of those very characteristics! Esme has BEGGED him to let it go, she doesn't want Pablo hurt. She does not and cannot understand the depth of his pain and rage. As Meche tried to show him, without telling her he is her Father and she is the stolen baby, she just thinks he's a nice, but over-involved old man trying to run her life. Although some of us were annoyed, I understand why Meche thought El Sil had designs on Esme's knickers before she knew he was her Father. El Sil as the only voice of the injustices done to the de la Santa Cruz family is weak and ineffectual.

Well. We have a long way to go. More immature, abusive, dalliance with the willing Monkey-ka, then there's the come-hither art gallery owner. I can't see Esme giving another man the time of day and if she even looks at Mariano. . .well. . .we've got a ways to go!

Lila

Sort of off topic? I just heard an interview with Daniel on Radio Formula. He's such a nice guy! Why can't someone cast him as a REAL galán and not a tool?

Lila, your reply is right on target. I especially liked these 2 line s

1. "and if she even looks at Mariano. . ."

I agree and would even add Damian to the list. He's OK but I don't like him for Esme. He's so protective until it would be difficult for him to give her up when the time comes.

2. "She does not and cannot understand the depth of his pain and rage."

Well said!!

"El Sil as the only voice of the injustices done to the de la Santa Cruz family is weak and ineffectual."

Before Monica's wedding there were several comments were made about Augie's questionable behavior 20 years previously. Weren't there? Has everyone dropped that? Shouldn't society tongues really be wagging now? Shouldn't there be more people talking about the injustices? Why is it just El Sil? Isn't there a Mexican equivalent of a bar association? Am I making any sense?

Eli, Sara, J, I'd much rather see Principe just wandering around the house and being all cat-like in the background. He was on the living room couch stretching this episode or last, I don't remember, but it was nice to see that.

tofie, lol...Rita's a legend in her own mind, I'm sure. She probably dated JFK, too.

"One can almost see a bitter, old Pablo whining about mi Esme, es mia, solo mia. . ." Lila, that made me shudder! I can totally see that.

Sara...I miss Willie Boy! He had personality.

Missy R, good point about Silencioso basically forcing Esme into having further public humiliation by having the MN's apologize publicly.

tofie and Sara, I'm with you on Silencioso. One-track mind. The return of his supposedly dead wife wasn't even a speedbump in his plans. I would that that finding her alive and in need of care would take precedence.

Yeah there was also a scene where príncipe ran off set when Esme got up from reading. It was cute. I hope they had some good tuna back there.

Sara, I remember him getting un-invited from a conference around the time it was front-page news. I have a hard time telling how much time has passed since then--days? weeks? I would think those snooty society people wouldn't have wanted to set foot in their house...unless they wanted a front-row seat to the show. I'm surprised that Silencioso gets to direct the whole legal process without the state or the bar association taking over. I mean, the bar association's reputation is being tainted by the rumors, isn't it? I would think they'd want to do their own investigation.

Actually, Rita told me she did sing happy birthday to jfk and her's a steamier version but it the dead blonds (her description) rendition that is immortalized.

My biggest fear, with the discovery Blanca alive, is the lucid moments fade and Blanca and her child miss their brief opportunity to reunite and enjoy the bond. How selfish of Fernando to keep Esmeralda's mother from her and I imagine nothing more therapeutic after losing a daughter and fearing them dead to have that child call me mother.

Bahahahaha, tofie! I'll just bet she did!

I wonder if Fernando took the doctor aside and gave him/her the entire story. He had to give some kind of explanation! Even though they didn't find anything structurally wrong, she did say that she feels like she's disappearing, and that makes me think she's getting worse. So help me, if Fernando's insistence on VENGANZA and lies makes her worse or puts her in danger or, like you said, keeps Esme from getting to have a relationship with her mother...shins won't be the only thing I'll want to kick.

I got an old rusty pair of sheep shears. One of us hold him and the other.....shear

Can we do that anyway? Because the ponytail...it just...it bugs me!

Already jerked an imaginary knot in that thang and shaved his eyebrows

Tofie, Diva: back awaaaay from the sharp instruments! Although, I have to admit, El Sil's hair has been bugging me since he was in prison. But if you are getting out the whackers, can we get Dona Rita's scraggly hair out of her face? Pleeez?

J in Oregon

J, I don't know if there's any hairstyle that's going to be flattering on Rita, but anything's got to be better than what she's got going now! The Crypt Keeper isn't a good style icon.

Thanks Diva, Sara, Missy.. .y'all about Rita's hair and impromptu, improvised cosmetic surgery on El Sil. ..Hee Hee!

It's been a fun day chewin' the fat with ya! Well, see y'all tomorrow.

Lila

Lila---Tofie said Wowie Zowie after she read your recap, please add the gringo to the Wowie Zowie list---I know that it's growing.
A Home Run recap Lila.

Anon. 1:53AM EDT---You nailed it.
A heart attack or stroke isn't funny but after I read your comment about the aftermath, I couldn't stop laughing.

Sara---I agree, Juan Verduzco is doing a great job playing the stroke victim's character. I actually tried to move half of my upper lip higher than the other side and talk---I couldn't do it.
Also he manages to keep one eye all the way open and the second eye half closed. I repeat, he's doing a great job.

Diva---He couldn't get any worse can he? Shouldn't have said that out loud. That made me laugh because we all know that our young handsome galan will be getting worse. Why? because we're only about at the half way mark.

Lila---Go ahead and eat the caramel apple. After the fine job that you did, you deserve one. Besides---Halloween is almost here.

Tofie---Lowrenza should put a helmet on Augie. That would be a hoot. I can just see Augie on his scooter wearing a helmet. After Monday night from what we saw in the advances, a helmet probably will be required.

I don't need to write down names because almost everyone has said it. Yes Pablo is really blowing it. PLEASE make Fernando stop my family is suffering. Really dude??
How about your fiancée who grew up amongst the garbage because of your father? How about her mother that lost her mind because of your father? How about Fernando spending twenty years in prison because of your father? How about you living in luxury on stolen money? And how about your mother who stands behind all that has been done?---I can't wait for the trial to begin. I want to watch the tears roll down your face pretty boy while you adjust your attitude. Call off Fernando? The Gringo says HELL NO! After the engagement dinner farce, FULL SPEED AHEAD!
the gringo

Thanks Gringo, I think you summed it up for all of us. I had sort of forgotten that Pablo knows all the injustices done by his family (except engineering baby Renata's kidnapping). Seen in that light, Pablo is worse than the rest of his family because he claims to LOVE Esme. And he's still ragging on her to give his family a break.
I hate watching him contribute more and more to her pain.

What I do want to see: Carlos stepping up to help Virginia somehow; Virginia getting surgery to restore her sight; the little cap off the plastic baby head; Principe freed at last to roam the house; a love interest for Damian; Meatball drafted into the Italian Foreign Legion, far far away.

J in Oregon

I would like to see Virginia's sight restored as well.

As much as the Meatball, Garabato and Rita scenes annoy me (and they reeeeaaallly annoy me), I would rather have that kind of filler than endless repetitions of the same conversations.

This is not really about the story, but I am continually impressed by the cast of La Gata. Lara Zapata has always been a favorite villain of mine and Mariluz is really pulling off the role of Virginia. Hard to believe she was Marilú in Mentir Para Vivir. She looks so young and so innocent here. Jorge Poza as Mariano has been fun to watch, too.

Lila
I don't think I've thanked you enough for volunteering to sub. I really appreciate it and selfishly hope Kat and I can convince you to recap regularly. You have a talent for it and I agree with others who have said you sell yourself short. Wanna share a Tuesday or Friday?? Feel free to e-mail me :-)

PS: It was rude of me to comment all weekend and not once thank you. Mea culpa.

And that humble abode, the lovely little room from which Pablo spent hours upon hours gazing into the ravine, all those holiday memories, hide and seek childhood games, horseplay in the pool, that heated seat where he made is first poopoo like a big boy, the kitchen where his oatmeal was prepared before gulping it down just in time to be chauffeur driven to school used to have a different name on the deed. Why you mad Pablo, wasn't it big enough, did the roof leak, or drafty window, was it on the wrong side of the street or that marble way to slippery when wet? Oh well, guess thieves should be better choosers.

gringo! Hey, thanks Hermano! I'm enoying raking Pablo over the coals with y'all and I know you more than anyone else is protective of your raven-haired goddess Esme. We must do what the writers aren't: show how outrageous is the MN indignation and hatred of the family THEY victimized! Go get 'em gringo!

J in Oregon, amen to your list and let's see Carlos with a clean face from here on out!

Sara! Awwwww shucks! You are so welcome and thank YOU! I can't believe that not only was it/is it fun, but I wasn't afraid! I'll email you. I'm at my Mommy's right now, she's up in age and I'm her Sunday caretaker. I'll hit ya up in a bit!

tofie @ 12:22: speak truth sister!

Lila

Oh mylanta.

I was just watching one of my recordings of Cuna de Lobos and I'm pretty sure the actor playing the Meatball is a sketchy thug hired by Catalina.

Wikipedia seemed to confirm it, but I always take Wikipedia with a grain of salt.

I'd like to thank everyone for encouraging Lila to join the team so that I didn't have to sound self-serving if I did it myself :D

lol, gringo, yes, we're only halfway there. Something about your last paragraph made me think...there were so many times that Esme refused to accept money from him (and I think Mariano made an offer once as well) and it was her money to begin with.

Sara, I thought she looked like Marilu, but I didn't check the cast list. She does look way younger, and they dropped whatever makeup technique the used on Marilu that gave her a plasticky sheen. I think that's what kept me from recognizing her.

"Oh well, guess thieves should be better choosers." Oooh, burn! Yeah, tofie, Pablo may be good at writing love poetry and painting, but he's best at the fine art of denial!

Did we ever adequately answer the question of why Rita was so freaked out to find Blanca in the first place? She kept talking about having to handle things carefully, that she was going to end up in jail now for sure, etc. And then she decided to just come right out and tell Fernando about Blanca...was that because of her brush with death? Why do I feel like they had her talking about "Oh, crap, I'm going to get in SO MUCH TROUBLE!" as a way to delay the reveal, but they didn't think of WHY Rita would have that fear, so they just dropped it? Or is there more that Rita isn't telling...and if so, why isn't she worrying about everyone finding out?

I think Rita is counting on brownie points for hooking Fernando & Blanca up after her near death experience. Otherwise, she is up to her eyeballs in dodo. I think she knows exactly what went down and who got down. She may have a loophole. If she was to dispose of the child by sticking it in an orphanage (or worse), never to be seen or heard from again, and because she used Esmeralda for begging instead, now reunited with ma & pa.

No, wait a minute, Rita always told everyone in the dump, she knew Esmeralda's ma & pa and was given to her for safe keeping by Blanca and had her stuff.

Sorry, just confused myself and certain ya'll.

Oh, I thought the belle of the ball was by a mile Blanca. Sorry big g but she made Esmeralda look like a school girl.

Maybe Rita is thinking she would be in trouble because Blanca could discredit the story about the baby being given to her by BLANCA? All we know is that THE DOUBLE CHIN gave the baby to Rita. Sure, Rita probably knew that there was something sketchy going on. So maybe her musings were more innocent. More like "I'm going to get caught in a lie."

Or did she say she could go to jail? I can't remember.

OH, and Rita doesn't give a hoot about getting caught in a lie.

Never mind.

Lila
Looks like I'm the one being a diva now since I only offered to share MY days with you. I'm sure KAT wouldn't mind a break, either. I'm such a douche.

Bahahahaha, well, no, I wouldn't mind giving up Wednesday or Thursday or alternating either of those days with someone. I'm not greedy! I just want to make sure everyone else is taken care of.

tofie and Sara, well I wouldn't put it past Rita to lie about practically anything. She invented the Internet, you know. And the atomic bomb was totally her idea. I think the writers just dropped the ball and sort of forgot, or hoped we would forget. She did blather on about spending the rest of her life in jail and having to manage the situation carefully.

Lifetime jail musings would seem to mean she's not just worried about a lie.

We've had red herrings and double chins. I can't tell if the writers are dropping the ball or if the ball dropping is intentional and there's a plan.

*snort* I have to go laugh at myself now. A plan. Ha!

The only plan is something similar to the "plan" in The 13th Warrior..."ride 'til we find them; kill them all." Though in this case I guess it would be, "Write till we get the audience hooked; disappoint them all; have a big wedding."

Diva, Sara, Tofie, David, gringo, Vivi, J in Oregon, Missy R, Steven, Anon, Niecie in MD, Eli Perez, Susanlynn and "silent" viewers all. . .this weekend has been a blast! I love Spanish and have been an "emerging speaker" for over 40 years. These novelas are the most fun way I can imagine of keeping my ear tuned even if I am quite the chicken when it comes to speaking. You all have made me feel real good! I am in awe of the amazing women and men who do this week in and week out and stick with it even when the story gets totally whack-o! Thank you all so much!

Diva and Sara, see y'all in email!

Lila

Lila, your recap was excellent and sparked so many great comments! I was sorta happy to see so much indignation directed at Pablo. He can't seem to get his mind right. I still watch bits and pieces of Amorcito Corazon on the late show, just so I can see Daniel as the charming Willie instead of clunky Pablo.

Thank you La Paloma and I include you in the comments above! Amorcito Corazon. . .hmmmm, maybe it's on hulu+: I've only seen Daniel in these two "pretty dope" roles. I should check it out!

Lila

These people are making me weary. They say and do the same things over and over and over expecting different results. ...which is the definition of insanity. BlancaFela (Flanca) needs more than a bubble bath and a new dress.

Late Sunday I reread the recap and many of the comments. I thought for awhile and wrote what I thought were very good comments on the story at hand. Just a line or two before I was finished, everything disappeared and a window popped up that said, the program has stopped working. Close the program. I am not a computer guy and there was nothing that I could do to get my comments back, I couldn't get anything back---I closed the program like it told me to do but when I got the comment section back the comment window was blank
GGRRRRRRR!!! Computers!!! You love them and at the same time you hate them.

It looks like we are not done with Monica yet. Is she being paid or just encouraged to give Pablo another go round? He left her at the alter and she's out for round two. QUE???

The advances show Augie taking a spill and hitting his head. Stop it writers! We know that it's too early for Augie's demise---he has yet to stand trial for his past crimes.

Despicable---That word seems to run the full spectrum. On the low end of despicable you have the likes of Ines and Garabato and we can also throw in the Meatball. On
the high end of despicable we have Agustin and Lorenza. The latter two work on a higher more sophisticated level than the first two but is there really much of a difference? Despicable low, despicable high it seems pretty much the same to me doesn't it to you?

Ponytails? --- In a store that I visit a long time employee has always worn one like Fernando's. My across the street neighbor is a full blooded American Indian who
also has a ponytail like Fernando's. They seem normal to me and not out of place at all but then I live in California I guess that makes a difference.
the gringo

Willy Boy is totally a pretty dope, but he's a goofy, fun, charming dope. I mean, he did charm the habit off a nun (ok, ok, she hadn't taken her vows yet).

Pablo lacks charm, spark, fun. Even in the midst of the "good times" he didn't have that. There was a brief blip of romance from him, but that was about it. So, ok, not every galan has to be the take you to the amusement park and win you a stuffed animal-type, or the guy who takes you to the opera and sneaks in Milk Duds, but Pablo's just such a...lump!

gringo, I don't have an issue with ponytails and I likewise know plenty of guys who wear them and I've never thought it looked bad on any of them. I have an issue with Fernando's. They've styled it so oddly that I'm not even sure it IS a ponytail because it looks more like he got his hair cut straight across in the back, but they missed one piece.

I'm with you. All the despicables are about the same. They differ in levels of effectiveness and in what resources they have available, but in the grand scheme of things, no, Augie and Lorenza are no better than Ines and Garabato.

My older daughter was engaged to a guy she met in college who had long black hair. He sometimes wore it in a ponytail. I like long hair on guys, but my mother hated that ponytail. Fer just does not seem like a ponytail kind of guy to me.
