Weekend Discussion: Videos for those who aren't into football

If you aren't into football and don't care who wins the Super Bowl, here are some excellent items to choose from for weekend viewing.  Open a bottle of your favorite wine, get some nice cheese, crusty bread, and fresh fruit and enjoy the finest drama -- or comedy -- to be found online.

Recommend that you click on the far right of the black bar for a larger viewing area.

Opera

Telenovelas often feel operatic.  Loads of deception, misunderstanding, jealousy, revenge, greed, and all the stuff that makes life worth living.  Here are two great operas that aren't the normal epic length:

Tosca (1974) starring Raina Kabaivanksa, Placido Domingo, and Sherril Milnes

This is probably the best Tosca you'll ever see and shooting it as a movie makes its verismo style even more intense.

Salome (1990s; not sure of the year) starring Catherine Malfitano, Kenneth Riegel, and Bryn Terfel (subtitles are in Italian, but you guys will get it).

Not the most shocking version, but great acting from Malfitano and a young Bryn Terfel.  The most shocking version of this one in recent times is the version with Nadja Michael at the Royal Opera House.  There are pieces of it on YouTube, but not the entire performance.  Look it up at your own risk.

Movies

The Picture of Dorian Gray

Bruno of Mi Corazon es Tuyo quoted Oscar Wilde a couple of days ago, so here is a good version of the tale from when came that quote.

This version was produced by Dan Curtis and the music will be very familiar to many of you!

The House of Bernarda Alba

I have often said that Bernarda Alba is the grandmother of all controlling mothers in Telenovelandia. Here at last is the British production of this great play starring Dame Glenda Jackson and Dame Joan Plowright:

Farewell, My Lovely (1975)

You all loved my noir take on LQLVMR, so here is a noir film with Robert Mitchum:

Urban, thanks so much for the great selection of videos. I know what I'll be watching during football time.

I'm watching the Kitten Bowl on Hallmark Channel. :)

I bookmarked the Kitten Bowl page for later. The Puppy Bowl on Animal Planet is also adorable.

Nannet! I'm without internet or cable so I can't watch the kitten bowl or the puppy bowl- I might invite myself to my boyfriends house to watch...

UA: thanks for the heads up on the puppy bowl.

Eli: kitten bowl is so much fun!

Oooh, taking a breather from Pride & Prejudice on Ovation channel. It's the Colin Firth one. Woot! Looks like it will be repeated again tomorrow...all six Or so TV episodes in a marathon. :-)
