The Party Continues
What we saw on Friday
• Pablo takes his foot out of his mouth and he and Emiliano bond over their multicultural worldview.
• Virginia smirks to Mariana that she would toy with Martín only to make Emiliano jealous and to thumb her nose at Verónica.
• Martín and Verónica discover another thing in common: wounded palms. Martín thinks it is destiny that has brought them together.
And tonight, under a full Televisa moon
In the Night Kitchen
Salma is cross at finding Matilde, rather than Verónica, in the kitchen seeing after dinner. But when Virginia joins her, she turns on the smiles. Two men, Emiliano and Martín, have shown an interest in Virginia! Virginia, of course, only has eyes for Emiliano. Even so, Vero, Jezebel that she is, swooped down on Martín as soon as she saw he was interested in Virginia.
The door to the kitchen opens and Martín and Vero enter. Salma immediately lashes out at Vero for bringing a guest into the kitchen. Martín corrects her. It was he who insisted on accompanying Vero. Verónica explains that she is there to see about the dinner. Too late, says Salma unpleasantly. She's already taken care of everything – and even (poor sick) Virginia helped her.
[At this point, I stop and rewind. These two have done nada, right? Yup. Nada – unless you count picking up a wine bottle and looking at the label.]
Salma sends Virginia back to the party with Martín so she can have a little chat with Vero. As Matilde listens and frowns, Salma scolds Vero for being late (she wasn't; Salma was early) and for coming between Martín and Virginia. Given her shameless attitude and her mother's history... well! Verónica needs to shape up and behave like a decent girl.
Vero doesn't hesitate to defend herself. She is decent, even if Salma doesn't think so. "And don't talk about my mother again. What she did doesn't give you the right to judge me the same way."
Out in the Garden
Virginia smiles and assures Martín that he didn't get Vero in trouble. Her cousin is just... um... special. She has never gotten along with her aunt.
Martín is intrigued and wants to know more. Virginia is reluctant. After all, she doesn't like to speak ill of anyone. Martín says he's beginning to form his own impression of Vero. Before he can share it, however, Emiliano walks up to them and introduces a NEW CHARACTER, his best friend, Nicolás.
In Verónica's bedroom
Our heroine stands before a mirror touching up her hair and make-up. Really, she is hiding out. Matilde joins her, concerned after Salma's tongue-lashing. Vero admits that the constant references to her mother are getting to her. "I know she wasn't the perfect mother, but how am I to blame for her decisions?"
Matilde also thinks it's obvious that Martín likes her. "He's the one from the club," admits Vero, grinning now. Matilde's eyes widen. ¡Está guapísimo! she says. Vero likes him too and thinks they have a lot in common. But Aunt Salma thinks he showed interest in Virginia first. Matilde reminds her that five minutes in Virginia's company is enough to kill anyone's interest.
[I'm setting up a table for Matilde right now. Great company and even better eats.]
Vero is convinced, and she heads back to the party, prepared to put a good face on things.
Back in the Garden
Dinner has been served and the guests are at their tables.
Pablo dunks his bread in his soup and earns a dirty look from some snob seated across from him. He loosens his collar, which seems to have become very tight suddenly.
At the Prado Castelo table, Nicolás sings Vero's praises, telling everyone that Emiliano is good, but she is the real fencing expert. Vero tells everyone that she and Martín have a match the next day. Emiliano tries to talk her out of it. Her hand is injured, and Martín is much stronger than she is. But she points out that her opponent's hand is also injured (if they only knew how it got that way). Martín thinks Vero will be fine – she is much stronger and more astute than they think. Vero reminds them it's not a real duel. Besides, Martín would not be capable of hurting her. Right? In response, Martín manages a tight little smile.
Now Jorge stands up, microphone in hand, to welcome Emiliano home from Spain and to announce that he will now be at the head of the family business.
A moment later, Emiliano leaves the table, and Virginia follows him. He tries to get her to go back to the others. She accuses him of feeling nothing but pity for her. Sniff.
At the Prado Castelo table, Martín stands up and invites Verónica to accompany him. Jorge watches with concern. He doesn't think Vero should be so quick to trust the new guy. Salma isn't surprised: as soon as Vero saw he was interested in Ginny, she had to stick her nose in and ruin it for her cousin. Well in this case, Salma is happy. Let Vero have Martín – that will leave Emiliano free for Virginia. Jorge angers her when he remarks that Vero will probably be the one who marries Emiliano. "I'm won't allow my son to marry that... one." (ISBIS*).
*ISBIS=It Sounds Better in Spanish: casarse con esa.
Emiliano is still stuck on the sidelines with manipulative little Ginny. He has no reason to feel sorry for her, he tells her. "So you don't even feel pity for me?" she says pitifully, her face streaked with snotless tears, her eye makeup perfectly intact. "The only way I can enjoy life is with you." She loves him and wants to hear that he loves her too – not as a cousin, but as a woman. She gets up into his face even as he tries to pull away and get back to their table.
Jorge, meanwhile, reproaches Salma for speaking ill of Vero. But Salma insists that Vero is out for what she can get. But what can you expect from the daughter of a drunken father and a whoring mother?
And Virginia keeps working her end of the disinformation campaign. "Vero is a flirt. She throws herself at men!" Emiliano has had enough. "I won't let you speak badly of Verónica," he says, finally breaking away from his clinging cousin.
On the subject of Demetrio...
Verónica and Martín walk under a lighted tunnel. He apologizes for his rudeness earlier when they spoke of Demetrio. Vero understands that he is worried. She also found Demetrio's abrupt departure for the jungle somewhat odd. He didn't seem the kind of man to do that.
Virginia just wants to tell THE TRUTH ABOUT VERÓNICA
Emiliano can't imagine what Ginny has to tell him:
¡Verónica para mí es tan transparente como la mismísima verdad!
(For me, Verónica is as transparent as truth itself.)
"Remember Demetrio Silveira?"
Emiliano never met him, but know he was Jorge's administrator.
"He was interested in me, so naturally Verónica came between us. I'm sure they were lovers."
In the tunnel of obsession
"What kind of man was Demetrio?" asks Martín. "He was a city man," Vero tells him, "a man who should have settled down with a wife and children, that's all."
At the table
Salma reproaches Jorge for being dismissive of Virginia. He reminds her of Vero's accomplishments. She reminds him that Virginia is sick. How can he forget that since she never stops reminding him?
On the sidelines
Emiliano is prepared to accept that Vero went out with Demetrio. Of course, Virginia won't leave it at that. It was Demetrio himself who told her Vero was sleeping around (no era precisamente amante de una sola cama). Now Emiliano is furious. "You're lying!" he shouts. Ginny sobs prettily. What would she have to gain by lying except his hatred? But at least he knows the truth!
In the tunnel of intensity
Marriage and family don't seem to appeal to Vero, suggests Martín. They do, she corrects him, but she is interested in more than that: she wants to live life to the full and without pretense; she wants to love intensely even if it makes her weep. Martín feels the same way: It is only through love ... or through hate... that one lives. There is an awkward, uncertain moment. And then he leans in for the kiss. The theme song swells...
But AFTER THE COMMERCIAL, Vero pushes him away and scolds him for taking unwarranted liberty. Perhaps after she knows him better and they've had a chance to become friends...
On the sidelines
When Jorge catches up to him, Emiliano asks him if Verónica was seeing Demetrio Silveira.
Pueblo Nuevo
NEW CHARACTERS!
Raymunda welcomes weary Joaquín home from the mines. It's getting harder and harder to work La Perla, where the gold is getting very scarce, and he is worried about what they'll do for money. They can always ask her father for help, she tells him. But Joaquín promises he will always take care of his family.
Now Blanquita, Polo and Onix come home and we realize that Raymunda (Patty Diaz) is Crescencio's daughter. Polo starts to tell his parents about the Biblia arreglada they delivered to Ana Perla.
And in Mina Escondida
Crescencio notes the improvement in Ana Perla's mood and asks her what verse has left her so serene. She's no fool. "The one that says that grandchildren are the crown of their elders and parents are the beauty of their children." Abuelo agrees. He sees the beauty of Ana Perla's mother in her every day.
Whiplash. Back to the sidelines at the Fiesta Prado Castelo.
Jorge is startled at Emiliano's question about Vero and Demetrio. Is he jealous? Is he in love with Vero? Emiliano admits that he is. Jorge tells him not to worry. Demetrio left a long time ago and Vero is a free woman. It would make Jorge very happy if Emiliano married Vero.
In the tunnel of misunderstandings
Vero explains that wanting to live fully doesn't mean living without limits or conscience. She strides away, leaving Martín to rethink his strategy.
La casa de Raymunda, Joaquín et al
Everyone is hungry and ready for the family meal. Note: These people actually seem to like each other. Can this be a HAPPY FAMILY? Stay tuned.
On the sidelines
Jorge encourages the niño Emiliano. Yes, he'll have to work to conquer Vero; and yes, he'll have to work to learn about running the business. But all Jorge wants is to see his son at the head of Prado Castelo with a woman like Vero at his side. Oh dear...
In the kitchen
At this very moment, Vero is telling Matilde all about THE KISS. She has found the man for her!
On the sidelines
Jorge thinks the situation is perfect. Emiliano fears Vero's rejection, and with it, the loss of her friendship too. He admits he hasn't declared himself, though he has hinted at his feelings. Jorge urges him to speak plainly – it's part of growing up (snort).
La casa de Crescencio
Ana Perla doesn't remember her parents. She was very young when they died in that accident in the city.
La Fiesta Prado Castelo
The Provincial Painter and the Mad Engineer
Pablo explains that he is a painter and he is intrigued by Martín's reflective pose. Martín asks grouchily if he's one of those who steal the soul of all they see. "No, you're thinking of photographers," Pablo answers. What he likes is showing what others can't see.
Martín has been thinking about how a woman can make a man feel great passion and great hatred at the same time. It is a macabre trick of destiny to meet a woman like that.
Pablo wonders if this woman did something to him. Why is he talking about hatred?
Martín says he was just recalling a conversation with Vero. Does Pablo know her well?
He just met her and she seems very interesting – different from the others:
Si tuviera que pintarla, creo no me alcanzarían los colores.
(If I had to paint her, I don't think I could capture all her colors.)
Martín acknowledges that he likes Vero, but fears they would both end up getting hurt if they went out together.
In the Night Kitchen
Vero is bubbling happily about THE KISS and how to play it (not too easy, not too hard to get) and Matilde continues in her role of loving mother.
"We have a duel tomorrow!"
"Eres incorrigible, mi niña!"
Big hug.
In the Garden, The Poet and the Engineer
"Do you think a woman like that could live in a place without these luxuries?" Martín wonders. What kind of place was he thinking about? asks Pablo. Martín explains that he has just been in the remote, but amazing town of Mina Escondida (the indigenous people call it the infierno verde).
Pablo smiles and repeats: "The green inferno." He's been thinking about going into the jungle to paint, but had no idea where to go. Mina Escondida sounds interesting. He'd like to hear more.
La Casa de Botel y Magdalena and a little more narrative exposition
Magdalena is happy the new mine is doing so well, especially since Botel lost everything because of her. The sacrifice was worth it, he says. Even so, she replies, she has always felt guilty.
No más que yo por haberte separado así de tu hija.
(Not more than me for separating you from your daughter like that.)
Now they have the money to continue the search for the truth, she tells him. He agrees – as long as she doesn't put herself in danger by leaving Mina Escondida. "But how can I search for my daughter if I don't leave here?"
But Padre Juan arrives at that moment, so Botel doesn't have a chance to answer his wife's question. The padre wants them to know he spoke to Crescencio about Manuel's rude behavior.
Casa de Crescencio, aka The Big House
And speak of the devil, brutish Manuel sits at the table and tries to come up with new ways to torture his sister. Like maybe they should move her to a different room, one that doesn't look out on the square and present possibilities of escape. Ana Perla begs her grandfather not to move her. He says if she keeps talking to all kinds of people at the window, he might just have to do it. "Now read the word of God," he instructs her, giving her a perfunctory kiss on the brow before leaving the table.
Fiesta Prado Castelo
The Painter, the Engineer and Poor Sick Virginia
First of all, check out the ice sculpture of the horse. It has stood up amazingly well.
Okay. So Pablo is all enthusiastic about the green inferno. Before Martín can tell him more, Virginia shows up to say that Mariana is looking for him. So Pablo leaves and Virginia has Martín to herself.
Martín asks if she and Emiliano are a couple. She tells him that all the men, starting with Emiliano, like Verónica. She thinks he came back to Mexico because of her. And because Vero isn't very discriminating with men, Aunt Salma has a hard time with her. But because Virginia LOVES her cousin, she puts up with and forgives her groserías y sus malas ondas (rudeness and bad behavior).
Martín's impression of Vero is quite different. He thinks she is a strong, confident woman but hardly rude.
"I see you're falling under her spell," Virginia tells him. Verónica tiene el poder de encantar a los hombres. Pero cuidado. Puede ser una trampa mortal para cualquiera que se enamore de ella.
(Verónica has the power to bewitch men. But watch out. It can be a fatal trap for anyone who falls in love with her.)
"Don't say I didn't warn you," says Virginia almost playfully.
La Casa de Crescencio or An Argument for Only Children
Poor Ana Perla is left alone at the table with brutish Manuel. And she is crying. He's her brother and he should be helping her. "But sometimes I feel that you hate me!"
Manuel glances over his shoulder to make sure no one is listening and then says: "Of course, I hate you! You're grandpa's favorite. You don't have to break your back working in the mine. And this house will be yours one day."
Ana Perla doesn't think she's all that lucky. She doesn't care about the house and it's no picnic being grandpa's favorite and under his control all the time.
Manuel snarls back that as the eldest child and the son, he inherits the mine. And if she doesn't watch out, he'll convince grandpa to punish her but good.
Fiesta Prado Castelo
Virginia lies to Martín just for the fun of it
Virginia is apparently just getting warmed up. Yes, she says, Vero has many suitors, but no one lasts very long. She's not a girl given to long-term relationships.
"Tell me something, Virginia – did you know Demetrio Silveira?"
Virginia hesitates as if trying to remember. "Ah yes, Demetrio – very nice guy, good-looking, intelligent. He was always with Verónica. They were inseparable. They used to go to the riding club together..."
"So they were a couple?"
"As much as Verónica might deny it, yes, I think they were a couple. They used to fight all the time, but with passion. And then one day he just disappeared.
"He never came back to my uncle's business. But if you're good friends, you must know where he is..."
Martín says he doesn't know. He invites Virginia to come to the duel the following day so they can continue their conversation.
A friendly warning for Verónica
Nicolás asks Verónica about Martín. "All the women at the party were talking about him," he says.
"My cousin met him in the riding club."
"Emiliano should be careful of his new friend. Your Uncle Jorge thinks somebody might want to get close to him to take advantage of his new position as head of Prado Castelo."
Vero isn't worried. "Martín isn't like that."
The Couple With No Future. At all.
Pablo tells Mariana about Martín. "He had great sadness in his eyes, great pain." Mariana giggles, charmed by his sensitivity. He continues with the story of Mina Escondida, and Pueblo Nuevo and its small French hotel. The only word that catches Mariana's attention is "French."
[JudyB, if you are out there, I bet it caught your attention too :D]
He tells her that there is nothing in Mina Escondida but the jungle and the force of nature itself – the indigenous people, the wildlife...
"Like in the movies!" Mariana exclaims.
"Yes! And forget communication – there's no phone, no internet."
Okay. That sounds a bit less cinematic. But not to Pablo. It is the perfect place to paint. So Mariana agrees to go along. After all, if there IS a little French hotel...
Virginia's Disinformation Campaign Bears Early Fruit
Emiliano asks Verónica if there was anything between her and Demetrio Silveira. She sighs and looks away. He takes her arm in a gesture more suited to a patán than to a galán. "I need the truth, Verónica."
"Emiliano, what's the matter with you? I already told you – Demetrio taught me a lot about your father's business, we were good friends, then he decided to bail out on the business, I got very angry, we argued and that's it."
"That's the only reason?" Emiliano persists.
"I realized he was hiding things... look, I don't like the tone of your questions and there's no reason to say any more about Demetrio."
But Emiliano can't let it go. "Why are you saying he was hiding things? Were you really only angry because he left – or because he left you?"
"What are you talking about?"
"Was it an argument between friends or a lovers' quarrel?"
Vero is offended. Emiliano has no right to ask her questions like that. Besides, even if she had been seeing Demetrio, why should he care?
But Emiliano does care. He is dying of jealousy. He can't bear to see her with another man – as she was with Martín earlier. She spent the whole day with him!
"I was attentive to him because he is your friend and your guest. And I like him too. And you know what? I'm going to see more of him.
"And please don't get upset about it. And don't say anything that could affect our friendship and affection for each another."
Emiliano shakes his head and once again grabs her upper arm. "Our friendship? I can't settle for that. I love you, Verónica."
Virginia gets her wings clipped
Virginia approaches Martín, now standing alone, and playfully asks him if everyone has abandoned him. Before she can get any further, Salma marches up and orders her inside before the cool night air can do her harm. Martín, now the complete gentleman, takes his leave. As soon as he is gone, Salma scolds Virginia for behaving like Verónica. "I just hope you don't disappoint me the way she did!"
Salma storms away. Virginia sulks.
And Emiliano is still holding on to Vero's arm.
"All I want in this life is for you to love me back." Vero breaks free and turns away. He reminds her of how close they've always been. "But as cousins," she says. "But we're not cousins," he insists. "We don't have the same blood."
"That doesn't matter. That's how I see you." Verónica can't change the way she feels: Uno no manda en el corazón.
She's not going to deceive him or give him false hopes. And it's better that he know now that...
"Know what?"
"That I'm feeling something more for Martín San Telmo."
Emiliano's eyes widen slightly. He steps back...
Tune in tomorrow!
