An alternative way to view the feeds

Experimental Index for Sombra

If this works, we have an alternative way to look at the feeds that would help IE and Chrome users. Even if you're not watching Sombra, please take a look when you have some time and give me some feedback on how this would work for you.

This exact post is probably going to go away at some point. I want to tweak things like the font and the width for a little more readability.

It's not going to update anywhere near as quickly as the original feed. We're talking about a delay of up to 15 minutes.

Mostly, I need some feedback about whether it works and whether it's useful. It wasn't a ton of work to put together (once I figured out what I was looking for) but it's not something I want to do for all our shows/tags unless people think they'll actually use it.

So, let me hear from you and please also remember to let me know what browser you're using.

I'm using Chrome and it looks great to me. Since I have access to the dashboard I get to posts that way, but I'm curious to hear how people use the site.

I just looked on my phone. Looks good there, too.

Hey! That worked and looks great on my kindle. Thanks, Kat.

You're both so welcome! I'm so excited! I'd like to make the text match closer to the text of the rest of the blog, though, so I'm working on that and the width and boy is it teeny-tiny when I look on my phone! Thank you for the feedback!

Do you have access to the "Edit mobile" part of the Template section? I know that's available on my blog.

Nope, it does not look like I have access to that.

Never mind. You only get a drop down menu of prefab templates. You can't really tinker with the html.

OK, I just changed it to match the blog's colors and font style and I think I like that much better. I also found another setting when I was generating this version and it doesn't go off to the side all wonky in mobile.

I think this could work.

Coolness. Thanks, Urban Anthropologist!

Doesn't most of our traffic come looking for old shows? I hope that this would be really helpful for those visitors since really they are responsible for all the page hits.

That's correct, most of our page hits are from people looking at older shows that I assume must be re-airing somewhere in the world. I'd be curious to hear how much the feeds are used at all, who uses them, what they expect to see/would like to see when they click on those sidebar links, etc.

Diva, thank you... this is beautiful! I use a Chromebook and also Chrome on my Android tablet and Windows computer. It's been frustrating to see the gobbledygook when I click on the feeds lists. I've used Feedly as a workaround, but this is so much better! Although I'm following Sombra, up until recently I've been several days behind. And I'd love to be able to more easily watch some of the older novela feeds, watching on Hulu or Youtube.

You are really going above and beyond! Thank you so much!

Ditto Prismaticity's praise! I just went back and looked at it again and I like the new "luke". It looks really good on my phone, too!

I don't even know if I have the words to express the awe I have of you. I would rather give birth to a 10 lbs baby while getting a root canal than work with widgets and html and computer stuff. Thank you for jumping into it to make it easier to use feeds and for us to find stuff. An extra thank you for doing it since "feeds" are not really "de rigueur" anymore and no one seems to want to support them. Damn you, Chrome.

Thank you so much! This looks great to me in Chrome. I'll check my kindle later, but if it works for others, I'm not concerned.

I've watched a number of older novelas on Hulu and Youtube and I have had to get pretty creative at times to work around the problem with the feeds in Chrome. I'm sure this will help out a lot.

Carolina and Prismacity, thank you! This is really helpful feedback.

A question: It seems pretty obvious that for current shows, having the most recent post at the top of the list makes the most sense. For shows that have already ended, would it be better to

-keep them in that reverse order with the newest post at the top?
-put them in order with the oldest post at the top?

Or does it not really matter, as long as it's obvious what order they're in?

Either order is fine with me. Maybe just keep them all in reverse order so they don't need changing when they are over? At any rate, I salute your awesomeness, Diva!

I vote for reverse order, then. That will really make it easier on you, Diva.

Prismaticity--Yeah, I wouldn't mind being able to just set it up at the beginning of a show and then never have to mess with it again :D

Lol, Sara, you and Prismaticity are reading my mind here :)

This is going to be a slow process, probably focusing on the current shows/feeds first and working my way backwards into the mists of Caray time....

You are awesome! I bow before your dedication to Caray!

I think having them in chronological order is better because it is a little more logical and because sometimes when you are scrolling past the newer episodes you can see info and titles that are spoilerish.

Personally, it doesn't bother me, but there are some who are very sensitive to any spoiling. People that sensitive probably shouldn't be watching old novelas, but who knows.

However, as to whether it is worth your time to reorder all of the old feeds, I rather doubt it.

On my iPad that uses Safari browser, the links to each recap work. Well, I only tested a few, but they work, which is BIG because the "feeds" links on the left sidebar never work on the iPad and RSS apps are a nightmare to me.
But this worked!!!

Great news, doris! I'm so happy to hear that!

Sara *blush* I do care a lot about the blog and the people who love to hang out here, so I wanted to do something cool for all of us. And, admittedly, that whole "Chrome doesn't do feeds" thing has been bugging me for a long time, and most of the feed readers I found just seemed more interested in looking fancy than giving me the information in a compact, easy-to-read format.

Thank you La Diva!!! This works great on my Nook :) I was never able to go anywhere on the left hand side if I was behind. I love it. Thanks for all the hard work!!!
